POLICE aut& orftk CONTAINING The substance of all Information* received in mu of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, rtputd. Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the eircumsta - of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6517 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. ' Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwardod to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on " War Office Forma 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AMD MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded from " Wells, on 3rd instant, charged on warrant with maliciously wounding Herbert Cox, with intent to disfigure :— WILLIAM MOORE, about 18 or 19 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, very small whiskers side of face, rather sharp aud quick spoken ; dressed in light speckled coat and vest, or dark mixture suit, black stiif bowler hat, sometimes wears a long • white jacket. He took with him a bundle supposed to contain clothes. He is supposed to be accompanied by a young man named Bennett, a labourer, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, very slight whiskers ( if any), turns in the right leg at the knee joint. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Bisgood, Glastonbury, or to Sergeant Yowles, Somerset Constabulary, Wells.— Bow- street, October 6. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Ayleston Park, during the night of 1st instant :— A Bilver breakfast Service, consisting of Teapot, Cream- jug, Sugar- basin and Tongs, all small size, oval shaped, bead pattern, round edge, white ivory handles, rather discoloured, all marked ' L. N.' on the side. A chased Chatelain, in shape of shield, with three gold chains attached. A meerschaum Pipe, well coloured, with straight stem, silver ferrule, and massive amber mouthpiece, in dark case. A pair of field Glasses, in black frames. A lady's light grey silk Dress, with long skirt, two or three flounces round the bottom, the body and polonaise all in one piece, satin down the front, 26 or 27 inches round the waist, and grey fringe round the polonaise. Information to Mr. Supt. Moore, Belgrave, Leicester. — Bow- street, October 8. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 5th instant, from Wichnor Hall, near Burton- on- Trent:— an old filagree Casket, oblong shaped, 6 inches by 4, one bit missing ; an old Book of devotions, in solid silver cover, supposed to have belonged to Queen Katherine Parr, aud of great value as a curiosity, in the fly leaf at the end is written a latin inscription, commencing ' Privatum quo dam maunde, & c.' ; a pair of old silver dwarf Candlesticks ; a pair of curious old Candlesticks, silver ledge round them ; a small round filagree Box, set with agates at top, one stone missing ; an old enamel Watcb, with chatelaine and pendants, the enamel slightly chipped, maker'a name with ' Lichfield,' printed on paper, is pasted inside. Harston, Burton- on- Trent, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, October 8, Stolen between 6 and 8 p. m. on 3r< T instant, at Romford : — 14 Tea Spoons, 6 marked ' G ' ; a pair of Sugar Tongs ; a Salt SpooD, all silver ; 4 Table Spoons ; C Detsert Spoons ; .6 Table Forks ; 6 Dessert Forks ; 2 Salt Spoons; a Butter Knife, all electro- plated ; a blue cloth Overcoat with velvet collar and pockets on hips; a black satin Tie with white stripe. | The robbery supposed to have been committed by a pro- fessional thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Supt. Dobson, Brentwood, or to Inspector Pepper, Romford, Essex.— Bov>- strcst, October 6. On the night of 2ad, or morning of 3rd instant, the Station at Buntingford, Herts, was broken into and robbed, one of the stolen Parcels contained a dressiug Gown, lined with purple ; a table Cloth, corn pattern ; and two tea table Cloths; another Parcel contained a small china Jug; 54 Postage Stamps were also taken. Supposed by three men, who are also suspected of having committed a burglary at Bishop Stortford :— One about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark c . mplexiou and moustache, no heard ; has the appearar. ee of a bricklayer; dressed in light brown, moleskin or fustian suit., soft black wideawake hat, red neckerchief; when in a public house sang several Irish songs. Another about 5 feet 8 inches high, large features, no moustache or whiskers dressed in dark clothes ( supposed tweed), black felt hat, ov. d top; sings tenor songs, his favorite being ' The Anchor's Weighed.' The other about 5 feet 6 inches high, daik com- — he is from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark hair, very dark complexion, wide mouth, large teeth, two small spots resembling mole spots on one cheek ( supposed right) ; dressed in brown cord trousers, old black cloth coat, and black chummy hat, has a brown cloth oveicoat which he generally carries on his shoulders with the sleeves tied round his necK. Supposed to be a native of Farnborough, and to have a wife now living there, has a soldierly appearance, and often talks about the 77th Regiment, will probably seek employment in a brick or tile yard or pottery. Information to Mr. Supt. Bouttell, North Walsham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 6. Found in Old Clough Lane, Worsley, about 4' 30 p. m. on 29th ultimo :— 3 Sheep, marked with red stripes on forehead, blue dot between shoulders, and red cross on buttocks. In- formation at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester. — Bow- street, October 4. Stolen at Parnona Gardens, Stretford, about 1 p. m., 1st instant:— a red and white spotted Cow, in calf, about 6 years old, small mark on right side of rump by cutting the hair. £ 1 reward will be paid on recovery of the Cow and couviction of the offender. Information to Mr. Supt. Bent, Old TrafFord, Manchester, Lancashire.— Bow- stree',, Oct. 4. Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions at Reading, Berks, on 19th instant, charged with stealing a Pony, Cart, and Harness :- EDWARD REVOLG, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, slender build, thin features, pale com- plexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in dark clothes; a painter. Information to Mr. Supt. Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead.— Bow- street, October 4. ROBBERY AMD LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Cheater, on 1st instant:— a gold centre seconds open face Watch, No. 81,751, maker J. N. Ogden, Manchester; and gold graduated curb Chain, with oval shaped gold Locket attached. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- st., October 8. Stolen from the person on the night of 28th ultimo :— a gold lever Watch, white dial, gold hands, maker George Cliff Lowe, Manchester, No. 33869, had an inscription on outer case ' Presented to Thomas Kent Goodier, by James Whittaker Evans.' £ 5 reward will be paid by the owner of the watch for its recovery, and conviction of the thief or thieves. In- formation at the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street. October 6. Stolen from the person at Preston, on 3rd instant :— a silver lever Watch, No. 5082, ' Michael Helsby, Wigan,' on works, white dial, nearly new. Had attached a gold albert Guard, round link pattern. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Office, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, October 6. Stolen from the person at Embleton, near Cockermouth, Cumberland, on 13th ultimo :— a lady's gold lever Watch, gold face, No. 4512, maker's name ' J. Ingham, Cockermouth' engraved on plate. Information to Mr. Supt. Taylor, Con- stabulary Office, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen from the pernon in Preston, between 18th April and 16th Jun- last:— a silver lever Watch, No. 1283, cream coloured dial, al lit tie' cracked, is well worn. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston. — Bow- street, October 4. plexion, whiskers, aud moustache, slight make ; dressed in dark dress frock coat, low felt hat, quiet mannered. All about 35 years of age. Supposed to have left in the direction of Royston. Information to Mr. Supt. Hedington, Great Eastern Railway, Liverpool- street, E. C.— Bow- street, October 6. HORSE AMD CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of 25th ultimo, from a field at West Dulwich :— a bright bay Gelding, f 5J hands high, 4 years old, small star on forehead, hind foot aud fetlock white, lump on side of near hind leg, long tail, in gor. d condition. Information to the Director of C. T. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, October 8. Description of an Irishman, a drover, engaged at Brouwh Hill Fair, on 1st instant, to drive three Irish beasts to Crook, near Bishop Auckland, sold one on the road, near Bowes, for £ 9, aud absconded with the money, a man answering the description took a ticket at Bowes Railway Station, for New- castle- upon- Tyne :— he is 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, has large blotches on his face, apparently from drink, slender figure ; dressed in grey greasy clothes and cap, necktie and collar ; attends fairs, and may be found in low beer houses, or lodging houses. Information to Mr. Supt. Gregory, North Riding Constabulary, Richmond, Yorks, or to Inspector Robson, Police Station, Greta Bridge, Barnard Castle.— Bm- slreet, October 8. Stolen from a meadow at Westhampnett, on the night oi 28th or morning of 29th ultimo :— an iron- grey gelding Cob, well bred, in good condition, about 15 hands high, 5 years old, cow hocked, square tail, few white hairs ou off side caused by pad, t wo small girth m irks on off side, and small marks ou hind legs caused by being kicked. Information to Mr. Supt. Lucas, County P>. lice Station, Chichester, Sussex. — Bow- street, October 6. Description of JOHN SHERWOOD SIGGERLEY, a potmaker, who absconded from North Walsham, on 2nd inst., charged with stealing a Pony, Cart, and Harness, recovered ; LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of FRANCIS McNEILL, charged v it'i stealing at Welshpool, ou 23id ultimo, a lady's silver Geneva Watch, and a meerschaum Pipe ( recovered) :— he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, dark whis- kers aud moustache, chin shaved, scar on one side of chin, is of smart active appearance, a hair dresser ; dressed in a light suit of clothes, and felt hat; took train from Oswestry to Chester same night, his mother resides iu Liverpool. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., October 8. Stolen from a dwelling- house iu Burton- on- Trent, on 5th instant :— a black Polonaise, figured material, black buttons, in the pockets were a russet- coloured Purse ( which coutained an old gold Ring, a pawnticket, and about 8s.), some Gloves, and a Pocket- haudkerchief. A tramping woman with spec- tacles and a baby iu her arms called at the house a short time previous to the robbery and is believed to be the thief. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Harston, Burton- on- Trent, Stafford- shire.- Bow- street, October 8. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— HUGH HOWELLS, a travelling book hawker, A'erystwith, Car- diganshire, about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, proportionate build, pale complexion, dark hair and mous- tache, chin shaved. Has resided for some time at Gladston- square, Penygroes, Carnarvonshire. Is accompanied by his wife, and two girls— Catherine Jane, about 9 yeara of age, Elizabeth Ann, about 6 years of age. Usually travel isi Wales. Information at the Chief Constable's Office, New- town, or to P. C. Roberts, Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, October 6. Charged on warrant with stealing a quantity of Cloth in South bhiekU :— JAMES WRIGHT, 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, bushy brown whiskers mixed with grey around face, round full face, stout make, long nose ; dressed when last seen in a blue coat, light trousers mixed witli brown, and a white hat, sometimes weais a hard felt. He ia a draper, and a native of Scotland. Information to Captain Adams, Central Police Office, South Shields, who holds a warrant for his appreheusion.— Bow- street, October G. Charged with stealing at Gerrard's Cross, Bucks, on 1st instant, a brown Overcoat, recovered ; aud 3 pairs of new Boots, one pair lace- up water- tight, lipped and nailed, toe- capped, with brass eye'. et holes; one pair of elastic- side button- up, toe- capped ; and a pair of Balmoral side- spring •— a man, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair turning grey, heavy moustache, paralysed all up left side, and has several tattoo marks on each aru>, amongst others are the letters ' M. A. R.'; dressed in a dark coat, brown trousers, and helmet or shooting hit; is a painter, and a native of Cauad, which place he intends returning to. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, October 6. Absconded from his bail, charged with stealing 18 Truases of Hay :— GEORGE SMITH, alias PEGGY, 57 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, turning grey ; dress ; brown double breasted box cloth c > at, cord trousers, black soft felt hat ; likely to be found iu the company of hay carters, in Essex aud Herts, and is well knowu in the neigh- bourhood of Dattford. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police., October 6. Stolen from the booking office at the Buntingford Rail- way Station, also from the booking office from the' West Mill Railway Station, during the night of 2ad instant:— two Parcels, containing a lady's Dressing Gown, a gay pattern, 2 POLICE GAZETTE. October 8 lined with quilted purple twill; a small China Milk Jug, blue and white pattern ; a pair of Spectac'es, in wooden case ; a large flowered Table Cover ; two small white damask Table Cloths ; a quantity of Parcels Railway Labels, with the inscription ' Great . Eastern Railway Parcels Service,' each label having a number ; and about 9s. in Silver and Coppers. Information to Inspector York, Buntingford, Herts.— Bow- street, October 6. Stolen in Crewe, between 4th and 22nd ultimo :— one hand Saw; a smooth Plane, three Chisels ( one 2iinch); afoot Square; one Axe ; one large Hammer ; one spirit Level; one wooden Mallet ; one pair of Pincers; one wooden Gauge ; one toole Bass; one oil'Stone. By GEORGE TIMMS, a joiner, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, light complexion, moustache and whiskers ; dressed in a black cloth suit, much worn ; supposed to be in Manchester ; the | above named articles have been found pledged at Crewe. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Naylor, Constabulary Office, Crewe, Cheshire, wLo itoMs a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street October 4. Charged on warrant with embezzlement: — JOHN RILEY, 65 years of age, about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy whiskers and moustache, going grey bald on top of head, lost front teeth ; dressed in dark tweed suit, and hard felt hat; is well known at Audlem, Ettley Heath, Nantwich, and Sandbach ; his wife is supposed to be residing at Audlem. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport. •— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen on the night of 30th ultimo, from a common lodging housej at Penygroes, Carnarvon :— a Purse, contain- ing £ 13 in Gold ; by a tramp, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, bine eyes, park brown hair, round face, pale, light moustache and imperial; dressed in a light grey tweed morning coat, light brown trousers; native of Chester, frequently calls at livery stables, and when he has money attends fairs buying and selling old horses. Information at Police Station, Carnarvon,— Bow- street, October 4. Absconded, 28th ultimo, charged on warrant with em- bezzlement THOMAS MADGE, of Bideford, 53 years of age, 5 feet C or 7 inches high, dark whiskers, small cut mark on upper lip, wide mouth, sallow complexion, and stoops [ a little; dressed when last seen in a soft wide brim hat, blue cloth coat and vest, and dark cord trousers. He may be about to emigrate. Information to Mr. Supt. Chipman, Bide- ford, Devonshire.— Bow- street, October 4. Charged with stealing £ 21 and one £ 5 Bank of England Note, in a canvas Bag, on 1st instant :— a man 31 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, thin, sallow face, pockpitted, dark hair, do. on chin, and slim figure ; dressed m black coat, blue Guernsey, recently half- sleeved, white wrapper round neck with coloured horses, old sealskin cap, hob nailed ( Canter- bur)) prison boots, a fisherman, previously convicted, and addicted to drink. Information to Mr. Supt. Romanis, Margate, Kent.— Bow- st., October 4. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Stockport, about 11 a. m. on 30th ultimo :— a white Bolton Sheet., newly washed, part worn. By a man who had lodged in the house several weeks, 33 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, slight whiskers down side of face, medium build ; dressed in black cloth trousers, darn short round jacket, hard felt hat, elastic- side boots, collar, and bow, shabby appearance ; hawks a patent composition at jeweller's shops, for cleaning gold and silver, in bottles labelled ' J. Larrad, Birmingham '; and his wife, 30 years of age, about 5 feet high, fresh complexion, light hair, disfigured very much down left side of face, by a burn or scald, lower eyelid left eye drawn down; dreas of dark brown, with light stripes, black short jacket, with fur round, black straw hat, trimmed with black velvet, and feather in front, button boots ; state they belong to Exeter, supposed to have gone to Manchester with stolen property. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport.— BoW- street, October 4. Stolen from a lodging house, at Rhosddw, Wrexham, on 1st instant :— a round pepper- and- salt coloured Jacket., brown bone buttons, and slit behind; a pair of Trousers, same material; and 2s. 6d. in Silver. Supposed by two Lancashire colliers, one about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high; dressed in a dark tweed walking coat, and vest same material, much worn, corduroy trousers, and cheese cutter cap, elastic- side boots, hard worn; small dark moustache. The other about 22 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high; dressed in a dark brown coat and vest, brown corduroy trousers, soft cap, and wearing clogs, Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wildie, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, Ociobcr 4. Stolen at Crumpsall, between 2 and 3 p. m., 29th ult. :— a black dress Coat, with two pockets outside, and one inside left breast; a single- breasted Vest, nearly new; a blue pilot Overcoat, with two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, far worn. Supposed by a man named GIPSY CHARLIE, a hoise keeper, 36 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, very dark complexion, no whiskers or moustache, has a scar on bridge of nose. Information at the County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, Oct. 4. Description, of JAMES SHEPHERD, of George- street, Kent- street., Southwark, Loudon, nut hawker, committed to Aylesbury Gaol for 1 month for pocket picking at High Wycombe Fair on 27th ultimo :— 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, round face, grey eyes, brown hair cut short, slight moustache, and whiskers shaved -. ff, large mole centre of breast, large scar back of right calf, and proportionate figure ; dressed in grey cloth coat and trousers, dark serge vest, old Army boots, and hard, round felt hat. States he lodged at 7, Angel- place, Southwark, London, for about 6 years", and left 2 years ago. Information to Mr. Supt. Sergeant, County Police Station, High Wycombe, Bucks.— Bow- street, October 4. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) Wanted for shouting a Mare, the property of John Brooks, his master, at Warsop, Notts, on 3rd instant :— HENRY HEWLETT, native of Hants, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, round face, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, surly looking, walks with a slouch ; dressed in a black billycock hat, blue pilot great coat, dark cloth jacket, cord trousers, new bottomed, old lace boots; has a pair of dark cloth trousers with him, and small bundle. Information to Mr. Supt. Bexon, County Police Station, Mansfield, Notts, who holds a warrant.— Bom- street, October 6. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. 1 MARY JONES, advertised in the Police Gazette of 4th instant for obtaining Money by false* pretences at Eastnor, on 27th ultimo, has been apprehended, and sentenced to three months' imprisonment.— Bow- street, October 8. Amended description of HENRY NEVELL, a photo- grapher, advertised in Police Gazete, 20th ult., for fraud :— he is from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, slight moustache, dimple on chin, and dressed in a dark plaid suit. The man who acts as his assistant is called Jack by Nevell, who sometimes goes by the name of Bloomfield : they were heard to say, on leaving Blandford, that they purposed going into Cornwall. Information to Mr. Supt. Sheppard, Police Office, Wincanton, Somerset, who holds a warraiit for the arrest of Nevell.— Bow- street, October 6. Charged with obtaining Jsqd and lodging by false pretences, at an Inn, at 7 Stourbridge: — JENNY CROWTHER, alias JENKINS, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, round features, fresh complexion, dark eyes, brown ^ nairl cut, very thick Oft forehead, and generally worn loose atback of head, sharp walker ; ciresseu in dark greOB cord dress, with deep kilting half way up skirt, princess robe, and no other trimming, buttons down the front of bodice, navy blue linen dress jacket bodice, and skirt, trimmed with light print, plain black cloth jacket, with narrow fur on, tight across waist, called § jacket, white straw hat with peak in front, sometimes turned up in front brim, trimmed with pale blue silk ; was accompanied by a young man of respectnblc appearance, between 17 and 18 years of age. Information to Mr. Supt. Wheeler, Police Office, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension. - Bow- street, Oct. 6.
