The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not tn custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Tht Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that hat been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1880. Kotlce.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be mado and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it iB desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be Blade. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and » f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly.—( 1) The amount of tie reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'ne persons forwarding them. Stolen from the person, on 27th ultimo :— a gold lever Watch, maker White, Coventry, No. 10762, had attached a gold albert Guard, link pattern, with seal appended, which has a red stone on one side, and a brown one on the other. Stolen from the person at Chapel- en- le- Frith, on 28th instant:— a gentleman's gold Geneva Watch, with inscription inside ' Presented to the Rev. Robert Shenton, 1874.' Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." The house of Mr. Robert Williams, Brynglass, near Mold, was broken into between 7 p. m. and 12 p. m. on 25th instant, and ,£ 30 in Gold stolen. Supposed by tramps. In- formation to Inspector Minshull, Mold, Flintshire.—- Bow- street, September 29. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING, Supposed to have set fire to a quantity of Hay, Talwrnbach, on 20th iustant:— a tramp from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, rather dark complexion, cleah shaven, cheek bones prominent, sunken cheeks, low narrow chin, and proportionate build ; dressed in dark blue jacket, ragged at elbows, pockets ou each side with flaps, single breasted brown cloth waistcoat with two pockets each side, dirty fustian trousers, lace- up boots, heels worn out, a plaid woollen shirt, black aud white, a red muffler, brown cap with peak aud button on the top ; carrying bundle in a piece of window curtain aud tied with cord, con- taining a brown woollen shirt, and one stripped calico shirt, a pair of light grey woollen stockings, a pa- r of yellow cotton stockings, a pair of elastic side boots, and a plaid woollen scarf. FORGERY- Absconded, 23rd instant, charged on a warrant with forgery :— THEOPHILUS WILLIAM STARKEY, a solicitor, 43 years of age, 5 feet 7 inchcs high, broad shoulders, stout, hair and whiskers dark brown ( turning grey), slightly bald on top of head, fat hands, bites bis finger nails ; dressed well, aud of smart appearance ; is fond of rowing ; has been in business at Palmerston Buildings, E. C. ; private address, Boswell House, North Eud, Croydon. The accused has a considerable sum of money in his possession, aud will probably leave the country. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, 2f, Old Jewry, London. — Bow- street, September 29. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THIS PERSON. Stolen from the person at Embleton, near Cockermouth, Cumberland, on 13th ultimo :— a lady's gold lever Watch, gold face, No. 4512, maker's name ' J. Ingham, Cockermouth' engraved on plate. Information to Mr. Supt. Taylor, Con- stabulary Office, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen from the person in Preston, between 18th April and 16th Jun;- last:— a silver lever Watch, No. 1283, cream coloured dial, al little cracked, is well worn. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston. — Bow- street, October 4. Stolen from the person, at Cackleberry, Hailsham, on 25th ultimo :— a silver open face verge Watch, No. 847, has ' M. C.' and a lion inside of the case, a brass Albert, and about 9s, in Silver and Bronze Money. Information to the Chief HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found in Old Clough Lane, Worsley, about 4' 30 p. m. on 29th ultimo :— 3 Sheep, marked with red stripes on forehead, blue dot between shoulders, and red cross on buttocks. In- formation at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester. — Bow- street, October 4. Stolen at Pamona Gardens, Stretford, about 1 p. m lst instant:— a red and white spotted Cow, in calf, about 6 years old, small mark on right side of rump by cutting the hair. £ 1 reward will be paid on recovery of the Cow and conviction of the offender. Bent, Old Trafford, Manchester, Lancashire.— Bow- stree', Oct. 4, Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions at Reading, Berks, on 19tli instant, charged with stealing a Pony, Cart, and Harness :— EDWARD REVOLG, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 iuches high, slender build, thin features, pale com plexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in dark clothes; a painter. Information to Mr. Supt. Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead.— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen from a field by the Tinwell- road, Stamford, between 8 p. m. 28th, and 8 a. m. on 29th ultimo :— a light bay Mare, about 9 years old, young looking, is a little lame in the off far leg, has some hair chafed off iu front of near hock, good mane and tail, and is in fair condition ; and a dark bay Mare, from 15 to 16 hands high, white face, pluff on the inside of fetlock of both hind legs, two white marks on back where saddle sits, and is in good condition. Information to Head Constable Ward, Stamford, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, October 1. Charged with stealing ( as a bailee) a Horse entrusted to him to diive from Hook to Staines ou 24th ultimo ( since recovered) :— a man, from 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, light ginger whiskers, no moustache or beard, rather pointed features aud nose ; dressed in a short dark coat, cord trousers fitting rather tight, soft black billycock hat; has the appearance of a stable- man, attends sales and fairs, and acts as a drover, and appears to Liverpool, Bristol, Staines, Egham, Goodwood, Chichester, and all places where large fairs are held. Infor- mation to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot.— Bow street, October 1. Stolen from Drayton Marshes, Cosham, about 23rd ultimo :— 2 Mares, a bay, in foal, about 15 hands 3 inches high, branded ou both fore feet; a dark iron grey Mare Colt, about 14 hands 2 inches high, a little hair rubbed oft the off side. Information to Mr. Supt. Littlefield, Hants Consta- bulary, Fareham.— Bow- street, October 1. Stolen from a field at Byrn Tirion, near Caergarle, between 4 p. m. 26th aud 11 a. m. on 27th instant;— a brown Horse, 15 hands high, white face, and white hind feet, about 10 or 12 years old. Information to Inspector Minshull, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, September 29. Committed for trial to next Quarter Sessions, on 22nd proximo, charged with stealing a Mare at Wanstead, Essex, during the night of 20th instant ( being found in his possession next day at Longstanton, All Saints) :— a man, giving the name of GEORGE HANNON, 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 ins. high, blue eyes, light brown hair, fair complexion, mole on shoulder and stomach ; dressed in brown suit ( horsedealer cut). Says he resides with his step- father, Christopher Dix, of 3, Copley- street, Stepney- green, London. Photograph can be seen ou application. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigation, Great Scotland- yard, or to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police Office, Cambridge.— Bow st. Sep'ember 29. Stolen, 17th instant, from St. Paul's Close, Clapham :— a blue roan Mare, 14 hands, aged, has been fired at back of LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen in Crewe, between 4th and 22nd ultimo :— one hand Saw; a smooth Plane, three Chisels ( one 2 J inch); afoot Square ; one Axe ; one large Hammer ; one spirit Level; one wooden Mallet ; one pair of Pincers; one wooden Gauge ; one toole Bass ; one oil : Stone. By GEORGE TIMMS, a joiner, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, light complexion, moustache and whiskers ; dressed in a black cloth suit, much worn ; supposed to be in Manchester ; the above named articles have been found pledged at Crewe. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Naylor, Constabulary Office, Crewe, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension — Bow- street October 4. THOMAS GAFFNEY, advertised in Police Gazette of 27th ultimo and following dates, charged with embezzlement at Willington, has been apprehendeel.— Bo> r- street, October 4. Charged on warrant with embezzlement: — JOHN RILEY, 55 years of age, about 5 feet 5 or 6 iuches high, fresh complexion, sandy whiskers and moustache, going grey bald on top of head, lost front teeth ; dressed in dark tweed suit, and hard felt hat; is well known at Audlem, Ettley Heath, Nantwich, and Sandbach ; his wife is supposed to be residing at Audlem. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport. Bow- street, October 4. Stolen on the night of 30th ultimo, from a common lodging house, 1 at Penygroes, Carnarvon :— a Purse, contain- ing £ 13 in Gold ; by a trauip, about 36 years of 5 feet 6 iuches high, blue eyed, dark brown hair, round j. ale, light moustache and imperial; dressed in a light grey tweed morning coat, light brown trousers; native of Chester, frequently calls at livery stables, and when he has money attends fairs buying and selling old horses. Information at Police Station, Carnarvon.— Bow- street, October 4. Absconded, 28th ultimo, charged on warraut with em- bezzlement :— THOMAS MADGE, of Bideford, 53 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark whiskers, small cut mark on upper lip, wide mouth, sallow complexion, and stoops va little; dressed when last seen in a soft wide brim hat, blue cloth coat and vest, and dark cord trousers. He may be about to emigrate. Information to Mr. Supt. Chipman, Bice ford, Devonshire.— Bow- street, October 4." Charged with stealing £ 21 and one £ 5 Bank of England Note, in a canvas Bag, on lst instant :— a man 31 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, tliin, sallow face, pockpitted, dark hair, do. on chin, aud slim figure ; dressed in black coat, blue Guernsey, recently half- sleeved, white wrapper round neck with coloured horses, old sealskin cap, hob nailed ( Canter- bury) prison boots, a fisherman, previously convicted, and addicted to drink. Information to Mr. Supt. Romanis, Margate, Kent. — Bow- st., October 4. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Stockport, about 11 a. m. on 30th ultimo :— a white Bolton Sheet, newly washed, part worn. By a man who had lodged in the house several weeks, 33 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, slight whiskers down side of face, medium build ; dressed in black cloth trousers, dark short round jacket, hard felt hat, elastic- side boots, collar, and bow, shabby appearance ; hawks a patent composition at jeweller's shops, for cleaning gold and silver, in bottles labelled ' J. Larrad, Birmingham'; and his wife, 30 years of age, about 5 feet high, fresh complexion, light hair, disfigured very much down left side of face, by a burn or scald, lower eyelid left eye drawn down ; dress of dark brown, with light stripes, black short jacket, with fur round, black straw hat, trimmed with black velvet, and feather iu front, button boots ; state they belong to Exeter, supposed to have gone to Manchester with stolen property. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport.— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen from a lodging house, at Rhosddw, Wrexham, on lst instant :— a round pepper- and- salt coloured Jacket, brown bone buttons, and slit behind; a pair of Trousers, same material; and 2s. 6d. iu Silver. Supposed by two Lancashire colliers, one about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high; dressed in a dark tweed walking coat, and vest same material, much worn, corduroy trousers, and cheese cutter cap, elastic- side boots, hard worn; small dark moustache. The other about 22 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high ; dressed in a dark brown coat and vest, brown corduroy trousers, soft cap, and wearing clogs. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wildie, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen at Crumpsall, between 2 and 3 p. m., 29th ult. :— a black dress Coat, with two pockets outside, auel one inside left breast; a single- breasted Vest, nearly new ; a blue pilot Overcoat, with two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, far worn. Supposed by a man named GIPSY CHARLIE, a horse keeper, 36 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, very dark complexion, no whiskers or moustache, has a scar on bridge of nose. Information at the County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, Oct. 4. 2 POLICE GAZETTE October 4 Description of JAMES SHEPHERD, of George- street, Kent- street, Southwark, London, nut hawker, committed to Aylesbury Gaol for 1 month for pocket picking at High Wycombe Fair on 27th ultimo :— 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, round face, grey eyes, brown hair cut short, slight moustache, and whiskers shaved < sff, large mole centre of breast, large scar back of right calf, aud proportionate figure ; dressed in grey cloth coat and trousers, dark serge vest, old Army boots, and hard round felt hat. States he lodged at 7, Angel- place, Southwark, London, for about 6 years, and left 2 years ago. Information to Mr. Supt. Sergeant, County Police Station, High Wycombe, Bucks.— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen on 28th ultimo, in Manchester :— a diamond Ring, set in claws, with double grooves on each side. By a card sharper and betting man, a native of Leeds, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark side whiskers, short, slight moustache, dark hair parted in centre, slight limp when walking ; usually wears a light tweed suit, and pot hat. £ 10 reward will be paid by the owner for the recovery of the Ring and apprehension of the thief. Charged on warrant with stealing £ 5, on 21st ultimo :— THOMAS GLISSON, a ' hotel boots,' 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, fair hair siit short, no whiskers, slight fair moustache ; dressed in a <? ark cloth cutaway coat, dark vest, tweed trousers, low shoes, and round felt hat. He has a brother residing in Batb. Infor- mation to Chief Superintendent Williams, Detective Depart- ment, Liverpool.— Bow- street, October I. Description of ALEXANDER A. DONALDSON, a shoemaker, charged with having obtained Goeds, at Maid- stone :— he is 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, square but rather slightly built, dark complexion and hair, which he wears rather thick, dark moustache, and prominent eyebrows; dressed in dark mixture suit, and high hat or a low crowned felt one; is supposed to be making for Newcastle or Hull, accompanied by his wife, who is in a delicate state of health, and two girls of about 5 and years of age ; he was sentenced to 12 months h. L, at Rochester Sessions, on 31st March, 1879 ; may apply for employment as a shoemaker, or for an agency to a Sewing Machine Company, he having been an ageut for the ' Howe Sewing Machine Company,' at Chatham, previous to his conviction iu 1879. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police Office, Maidstone, Kent. — Bow- street, October 1, Charged with stealing a suit of Clothes, a pair of Boots, a Hat, and a Handkerchief, a grey round Jacket, double- breasted " Vest, and grey Trousers, right leg slightly worn at the bottom, a soft billycock Hat, a pair of light Blucher Boots with four holes on each side, and a blue coloured check pocket Handkerchief, at Lower Stonnall, on 27th ult. :— a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, slender build, and has a burn on right eye; dressed in dark cord trousers, pilot jacket, round hard hat, heavy lace- up boots, and thin beard on chin ; he had in his possession a Book, headed ' Monk Brattin Colliery, Barnsley.' He is going about the county, collecting money for some men that are out of work at the above colliery, and represents that he is sent out by the Miners' Union to receive the money for them. In the book is written the name of ' Sidd well,' and he is supposed to have gone in the direction of Derbyshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Harston, Police Station, Burton- on- Trent, or tc Sergeant Pearson, Police Station, Whitting- ton, near Lichfield, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 1. Wanted on a warrant, charged with larceny, on 27th ultimo :— DANIEL WRIGHT, blacksmith, 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, grey hair, parted behind, grey beard and moustache, very red nose, slender build ; dressed in dark clothes, and hard black felt hat ; has been in the United States, well known in Bradford, Halifax, Thornhill, and Barnsley. Information to Head Constable Clarkson, Wakefield Borough Police.— Bow- street, October 1. Police, Louth, Lincolnshire, charged with forgery and fraud, who absconded on 23rd instant, and was last seen at Man- chester on that afternoon :— 47 years of age, 5 feet 71 inches high, stout, bald, clean shaved except moustache ; dressed in blue serge, hard billycock hat, and carried a rug. Informa- tion to Chief Constable Bicknell, County Police Office, Lincoln.— Bow- street, September 29. Further information respecting EDWARD VIGT, advertised in Police Gazette of 18th August last, charged with stealing a Watch at St. Alban's :— his right name is EDWARD VOGHT, and has a brother who keeps a jeweller's shop in Bridge- street, Northampton, and his father carries on business as a watchmaker at Thrapston, Northampton- shire. Information to Mr. Supt. Pike, St. Alban's, Herts. — Bow- st., September 29. FRAUDS AID AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Charged with obtaining money by false pretences on 27th ultimo, at Eastnor, Herefordshire :— MARY JONES, from 50 to 60 years of age, 4 feet 11 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion; dressed in black gown, shawl and bonnet, and rather stout; she states herself to be a widow, and that her ( laughter died, leaving 8 children in her charge, that a lady offered to get 3 of them into an Orphans' Home at Brighton, and asks for money to defray the cost of the railway tickets. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Blunsden, Ledbury, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, October 4. Description of EDWARD BURRELL, alias CAPTAIN BURRELL, late bank manager of the branch of the County of Gloucester Bank, at Faringdon, Berks, charged with fraud, and for whose apprehension a reward of £ 50 will be paid by the Directors of the said bank :— between 50 and 60 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8' inches high, stout figure, grey hair, whiskers, beard and moustache, all grey, abundant and long, prominent eyes, very near sighted, always wears spectacles; usually dresses in a brown woollen suit, and hard black bowler hat, seldom if ever wears a necktie ; walks erect with rather short steps, and generally carries a walking stick in his hand horizontally, seldom putting it to the ground ; is likely to be in lodgings in the neighbourhood of London, or in some retired town or villiage. Information ( by telegram) to the Chief Constable of Berks, Reading, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 4 Description of T. M. WOOLLEY, alias T. HAWKINS : -— about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, rather spare build, long flowing whiskers, rather sandy, top front teeth out; dressed in light check suit and white hat with black band. He was accompanied by a woman, between 30 and 40 years of age, wearing a black hat. He is driving a bay horse, about 16 hands high, nearly thorough- bred, in dog cart; nearly new plated harness. Initials on portmai teau T. M. W.' Left Marlborough on 26th ultimo. He is charged with obtaining money under false preteuces, at Marlborough, by p ying his hotel bill by cheque, and obtaining change, which was dishonoured. Information to Mr. Supt. Wiltshire, Marlborough, Wilts, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, October 1. Description of a man beleived to be named SAM FOSTER, charged on warrant with fraud :— he is about 18 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark hair, large fore- head ; dressed when last seen in br< wn cloth jacket, dirty dark cloth trousers, hard round hat, rather high in crown ; he seeks work in Cattle markets, as a drover, believed to be a tinman by trade, and may be found working at tin shops, he was staying at a lodging house, in Nottingham, but left about 14th August; he may be in company with a woman, about 30 years of age, who he said was his wife. Information to Mr. Supt. Somerset, Bingham, Notts.— Bow- street, October 1. Description of RICHARD PARSONS, wanted on a warrant, charged with embezzleing £ i, at Birmingham :— about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, white hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, pink eyes, has the appearance of a Circassian, a bakers assistant. Information to Chief Constable Bond, Birmingham.— Bow- street, Oct. 1. Wanted at Warrington, for stealing goods in transit, on the London and North Weston Railway, between the 10th and 20th ultimo WILLIAM ROBERTS, 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, brown hair, slight moustache, small scar on edge of upper lip, he has been a billiard marker at Birmingham, and at the Red Lion Hotel, aid York Hotel, Douglas, Isle of Man ; he has a wife and family residing at Walsall, Staffordshire.
