No. 6514 FRIO AY, OCTOBER 1, 1880. •, Notice.— Tt is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of tha person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. •#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is giron, it is indispensably nccessary that an information should bo made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insortion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor ( UUttt lie prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should bo forwardod on War Offloe Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offoiing rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tiio persons forwarding them. They shoidd contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address er other- wise, CopieB of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Supposed to have set fire to a quantity of Hay, at Talwrubach, ou 20th instant:— a tiamp from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, rather dark complexion, cleau shaven, cheek bones prominent, sunkeu cheeks, low narrow chin, aud proportionate build ; dressed in daik blue jacket, ragged at elbows, pockets ou each side with Haps, single breasted brown cloth waistcoat with two pockets each side, dirty fustian trousers, lace- up boots, heels worn out, a plaid woollen shirt, black and white, a red muffler, brown cap with peak and button on the top ; carrying a bundle in a piece of window curtain and tied with cord, con- taining a brown woollen shirt, and one stripped calico shirt, a pair of light grey woollen stockings, a pair of yellow cotton stockings, tt pair of elastic side boots, and a plaid woollen scarf. Absconded, 23r< l instant, charged on a warrant with forgery i- THEOPHILUS WILLIAM STARKEY, a solicitor, 43 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, broad shoulders, stout, hair and whiskers dark brown ( turning grey), Bliglitly bald on top of head, fat hands, bites his finger nails ; dressed well, and of smart appearance ; is fond of rowing ; lias been in business at Palmerston Buildings, E. C. ; private address, Boswell House, North End, Croydon. The accused has a considerable sum of money iu his possession, and will probably leave the country. Stolen from the person at Chapel- en- le- Fritb, on 28th instant:— a gentleman's gold Geneva Watch, with inscription inside ' Presented to the Rev. Robert Shenton, 1874.' Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Hallam, Chapel- en- le- Frith, Derbyshire. — Bow- street, September 29. Stolen from the person, on 15th inst., in Sunderland :— a silver Geneva lever keyless Watch, has been gilded over, but gilt is much worn off, white dial, has ' G. L.', and ' No. 8284' engraved on inside of outer case, and has engraved on the dome ' No. .80284,' and some French words. Stolen from the person at Preston, on 20th instant :— a gold English lever Watch, double sunk, hard enamelled dial, engine- turned cases, full plate movement, jewelled in two pair extra ; attached a gold Albert Guard, 18 carat, with double Guinea attached, the guard Guinea well worn, No. supposed to be 14214. Stolen from tli- j person, at Cackleberry, Hailsham, on 25th ultimo :— a silver open face verge Watch, No. 847, lias ' M. C.' and a lion inside of the case, a brass Albert, and about ! ls. in Silver and Bronze Money, information to the Chief Coustable's Office, Lewes, or to Mr. Supt. Waghorn, hailsham, Sussex.— Bow- street, October 1. Stolen from the person, in Manchester, on 17th ultimo : a gold lever hunting Watch, maker Harrison, of Liverpool, No. 19212. £ i reward will be paid by the owner of the Watch for its recovery, and the conviction of the offender. Information at the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester. — Bow- street, October 1. Stolen from the person, on 27th ultimo :— a gold lever Watch, maker White, Coventry, No. 107U2, had attached a gold albert Guard, link pattern, with seal appended, which BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. The house of Mr. Robert Williams, Brynglass, near Mold, was broken into between 7 p. m. and 12 p. m. on 25th instant, and ,£ 30 in Gold stolen. Supposed by tramps. In- formation to Inspector Minshull, Mold, Flintshire,— Bow- street, September 29. Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions at Maidstone, on two charges of housebreaking at Lenham, Kent:— JOHN RUSHFORTH, 26 years of age, 5 feet 2 ins. high, fair complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, and mous- tache ; dressed in old black coat dark tweed trousers, and black billycock hat. States he is a decorator by trade, and has friends living at West Smithfield, City, London. Infor- mation to Inspector Baker, Kent Constabulary, Maidstone.— Bow- street, September 27. Committed for trial at Assizes, for burglary, at Shotover House, Oxon, on the night of 8th instant: — JOHN HARTLEY, 35 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, sallow complexion, supposed served in army, three moles left cheek, two back of neck, three on left shoulder, two left side, five right, boil mark right breast, anchor tattooed on back of left hand, aud tattoo marks on left forearm : dressed in dark morning coat and vest, dark striped tweed trousers, and light check cloth helmet- shaped cap, has several recent scalp wounds, a severe contusion of right elbow, and remains of black eyes, has been circumcised. £ o reward will be paid to whoever shall clearly identify and give information as to the antecedents of this man. Informa- tion to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, County Police Station, Oxfoid.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen by means of burglary, at Headcorn, Kent, during the night of 24th iustact:— a silver Dessert Spoon, marked ' J.'; a do. do., marked ' J. G.'; a do. Tea Spoon ; and a do., Mustard Spoon ; two electro- plated Table Spoons ; four do., Dessert Forks ; a pair do. Sugar Tongs, marked ' G. McM.'; a do. Cruet Stand with 6 bottles; and a mahogany Writing Desk, containing a black ebony Pipe with ivory mouthpiece. Information to Inspector Baker, Kent Constabulary, Maid- stone.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Brinsford, on 23rd instant:— a black cloth Jacket, single- breasted, florentine buttons, pockets on hips ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, full fall, and unstretched at the back of left hip; a grey Vest, double- breasted, with collar, all youths' size; and a blue and white bundle Handkerchief. Supposed by a tramp who was seen near the place, and was carrying a bundle tied in a handkerchief similar to the one stolen, about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers, medium build ; dressed in a dark cap, grey jacket, moleskin trousers which were ragged at the bottom and very dirty with red soil or clay. Information to Inspector Gilbride, Tettenhall, Staffordshire.— Bow- ttreet, September 27. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field by the Tinwell- road, Stamford, between 8 p. m. 28th, and 8 am. on 29th ultimo :— a light bay Mare, about 9 years ol^, young looking, is a little lame in the off far leg, has some liair chafed off in front of near hock, good mane and tail, and is in fair condition ; and a dark bay Mare, from 15 to 16 hands high, white face, pluff on the inside of fetlock of both hind legs, two white marks on back, where saddle sits, and is in good condition. Information to Head Constable Ward, Stamford, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, October 1. Charged with stealing ( as a bailee) a Horse entrusted to him to diive from Hook to Staines on 24th ultimo ( since recovered) :— a man, from 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, light ginger whiskers, no moustache or beard, rather pointed features and nose ; dressed in a short dark coat, cord trousers fitting rather tight, soft black billycock hat; has the appearance of a stable- man, attends sales and fairs, and acts as a drover, and appears to Liverpool. Bristol, Staines, Egham, Goodwood, Chichester, and all places where large fairs are held. Infor- mation to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, October 1. Stolen from Drayton Marshes, Cosham, about 23rd ultimo :— 2 Mares, a bay, in foal, about 15 handt ? inches high, branded on both fore feet; a dark iron g. v Mare Colt, about 14 hands 2 inches high, a little hair rubbed oft the off side. Information to Mr. Supt. Littlefield, Hants Consta- bulary, Fareham.— Bow- street, October 1. Stolen from a field at Byrn Tirion, near Caergarle, between 4 p. m. 26th and 11am. on 27th instant:— a brown Horse, 15 hands high, white face, and white hind feet, about 10 or 12 years old. Information to Inspector Minshull, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, September 29. Committed for trial to next Quarter Sessions, on 1! 2nd proximo, charged with stealing a Mare at Wanstead, Essex, during the night of 20th instant ( being found in his possession next day at Longstauton, All Saints) :— a man, giving the name of GEORGE HANNON, 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 ins. high, blue eyes, light brown hair, fair complexion, mole on shoulder and stomach ; dressed in brown suit ( horsedealer cut). Says he resides with his step- father, Christopher Dix, of 3, Copley- street, Stepney- green, London. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigation, Great Scotland- yard, or to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police Office, Cambridge.— Bow s'., Sep'ember 29. Stolen, 17th instant, from St. Paul's Close, Clapham :— a blue roan Mare, 14 hands, aged, has been fired at back of hind legs, goes a little lame at starting ; a skeleton Gig, painted brown, picked out red, ' Rogers, maker,' on caps of wheels; also some old silver- plated Harness By a mau, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, complexion and hair fair ; dressed in light suit, black or brown hard felt hat; who hired them for a few hours, but never returned. Infor- mation to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, September 29. Stolen from a field near the gas works, Oswestry, on tl. e night of 19th instant :— a dark chestnut horse Pony, 3 years old, 12 hands high, mane and tail greyish colour, thick neck, and short legs ; property of Dr. Beresford, Oswestry, who . vill pay £ 5 reward to any person giving such information as shall lead to its recovery, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen on 3rd instant, from Ashdown Forest, in Mansfield, Sussex :— a deep red and white Heifer, 2£ years old, and in milk. Information to Mr. Supt Peerless, Uckfield, Sus3ex.— Bow- street, September 27. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on 28th ultimo, in Manchester : — a diamond Ring, set in claws, with double grooves on each side. By a card sharper and betting man, a native of Leeds, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark side whiskers, short, slight moustache, dark hair parted in centre, slight limp when walking ; usually wears a light tweed suit, and pot hat. £ 10 reward will be paid by the owner for the recovery of the Ring and apprehension of the thief. Charged on warrant with stealing £ 5, on 21st ultimo :— THOMAS GLISSON, a ' hotel boots,' 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, fair liair eut short, no whiskers, slight fair moustache ; dressed in a dark cloth cutaway coat, dark vest, tweed trousers, low shoes, aud round felt hat. He has a brother residing in Batb. Infor- mation to Chief Superintendent Williams, Detective Depart- ment, Liverpool.— Bow- street, October 1. Description of ALEXANDER A. DONALDSON, a shoemiker, charged with having obtained Goeds, at Maid- stone :— he is 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, square but rather slightly built, dark complexion and hair, which he wears rather thick, dark moustache, and prominent eyebrows; dre.' sed in dark mixture suit, and high hat or a low crowned felt one ; is supposed to be making for Newcastle or Hull, accompanied by his wife, who is in a delicate Btate of health, and two girls of about 5 and 2J years of age ; he was sentenced to 12 months h. 1., at Rochester Sessions, on 31st March, 1879 ; may apply for employment as a shoemaker, or for an agency to a Sewing Machine Company, he having been an agent for the ' Howe Sewing Machine Company,' at Chatham, previous to his conviction in 1879. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police Office, Maidstone, Kent. — Bow- street, October 1, Charged with stealing a suit of Clothes, a pair of Boots, a Hat, and a Handkerchief, a grey round Jacket, double- breasted Vest, and grey Trousers, right leg slightly worn at the bottom, a soft billycock Hat, a pair of light Blucher Boots with four holes on each side, aud a blue coloured check pocket Handkerchief, at Lower Stonnall, on 27th ult. :— a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, slender build, and has a burn on right eye; dressed in dark cord trousers, pilot jacket, round hard hat, heavy lace- up boots, and thin beard on chin ; he had in his possession a Book, headed ' Monk Brattin Colliery, Barnsley.' He is going about the county, collecting money for some men that are out of work at the above colliery, and represents that he is sent out by the Miners' Union to reoeive the money for them. . Wanted on a warrant, charged with larceny, on 27th ultimo :— DANIEL WRIGHT, blacksmith, 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, grey hair, parted belaud, grey beard and moustache, very red nose, slender build ; dressed in dark clothes, and hard black felt hat ; has been iu the United States, well known iu Bradford, Halifax, Thornhill, and Barnsley. Information to Head Constable Clarkson, Wakefield Borough Police.— Bow- street, October 1. Description of RICHARD PARSONS, wanted on a warrant, charged with embezzteittg jJ3, at Birmingham :— about 20 years of age, about 5 feet. U inches high, - fitoul build, white hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, pink eyes, has the appearance of a Circassian a " bakers assistant. Information to Chief Constable Bond, Birmingham.- Bow- street, Oft. 1. Wanted at Warrington, for stealing goods in transit, on the London and North Weston Railway, between the 10th and 20th ultimo :— WILLIAM ROBERTS, 25 years of age, 6 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, brown hair, slight moustache, small scar on edge of upper lip, he has been a billiard marker at Birmingham, and. at the Red Lion Hotel, aid York Hotel, Douglas, Isle of Man.; he has a wife and family residing at Walsall, Staffordshire. Information to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington, who holds a wariant for his apprehension, or to Inspector Atkins, Detective Office, Lime- street Railway Station, Liverpool. — Bov>- street, October 1. Absconded from Walsall, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 3 Is. lid. :— MARK PERKINS,. 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, thin light whiskers, and moustache, glass left eye, holds liis head on left side when walking. Infor- mation to Chief Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Obtober 1. Stolen from the ' Fleming's Arms' Inn, Swathing, between 8 and 10 p. m. on 24th instant:— a gold masonic Ring, with the sign Square and Compass ; 1 oval chased gold sleeve Link ; about £ 38 in Gold, and £ 1 in Silver. Suppo'sed by a man who lodged at the Inn on the night of 22ud, and who was also seen loitering near the Inn on 24th instant, supposed from his photograph to be THOMAS CLIFFORD, alias DURRANT, advertised in the Police Gazette of 15th instant in connection with the robbery at Iford, Hants; he was dressed in dark coat aud vest, dark grey trousers, dark thin overcoat, and was carrying an umbrella. Information to Mr. 8upt. Sillence, Hants Constabulary, Bitterne.— Bow- street, September 29. Description of JOHN CHARLES ROUNSFULL, charged with stealing a gold Watch, found pawned, and for whose apprehension a warrant is issued :— he is 31 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache, stoops slightly, and is a little lame in left leg, usually carries a small dark walking stick ; dressed in black ribbed siugle breasted cutaway coat, dark t^ eed trousers, and hard hat, shabby ; has been a steward in the Royal Navy, is in the habit of obtaining money, food and lodging, at public- houses, under the pretence that he is a steward of a gunboat or training ship. Information to Head Constable Lynn, Devonport.— Bow- street, September 29. .£ 10 reward will be paid for information that will lead to the arrest of WILLIAM SMITH, late Inspector, County Police, Louth, Lincolnshire, charged with forgery and fraud, who absconded on 23rd instant, aud was last seen at Man- chester on that afternoon :— 47 years of age, 5 feet 7} iuches high, stout, bald, clean shaved except moustache ; dressed in blue serge, hard billycock hat, and carried a rug. Informa- tion to Chief Constable Bicknell, County Police Office, Lincoln.— Bow- street, September 29. Further information respecting EDWARD VIGT, advertised in Police Gazette of 18th August last, charged with stealing a Watch at St. Alban's :— his right name is EDWARD VOGHT, aud has a brother who keeps a jeweller's shop in Bridge- street, Northampton, and his father carries on business as a watchmaker at Thrapston, Northampton- shire. Information to Mr. Supt. Pike, St. Alban's, Herts. — Bow- st., September 29. Stolen at Ocle Pitchard, on 21st iustant:— a grey woollen Shirt, small man's size, darned on the collar, and a red stripe on wristbands. Supposed by an Irishman, 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, long features, very red hair aud mous- tache ; dressed in a dark coat, cap, new plaid scarf, and grey trousers ; may be found iu hop- yards or at farm- houses; supposed a native of Ebbw Yale, or Abergavenny, Mon- mouthshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Ovens, Bromyard, Herefordshire— Bow- street, September 27. Charged with embezzling £ 22 13s. ljd., the Monies of the Brancepeth No. 2, Lodge of the Durham Miner's Associa- tion :— THOMAS GAFFNEY, 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, no whiskers, slight thin moustache, lighter than his hair, slender figure, small features, romau nose, sharp at end, a miner; dressed iu blue rep coat, dark cloth trousers aud vest, elastic- Bide boots, haid low- crowned felt hat; is of smart respectable appearaxoj, i\ nd of good address. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunn, County Constabulary Office, Durham.— Bow- street, September 27. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement: — JOHN PIPPEN, of Somersetshire, a shoemaker, 36 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, slight make, and walks rather stoopiug ; dressed in dark coat turning brown, cord trousers, and hard felt hat with cloth mourning band ; carries a large carpet bag containing tools; Has been a soldier, and is a m rnber of tue Hearts of Oak Society. Information to Mr. Supt. Silvester, Police Station, Worthing, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen on 22ud instant, at Wilsford :— three Trowels, one about 12 inches long, nearly now, but a little rusty, another about lOi inches long, rather louud at the point, is a right handed trowel, but has been worked by a left handed man, and the other 8 or 9 inches long, with a very thiu handle, ' W. H. S. Hunt & Sons,' makers ; als > stolen at the same time, a Line, nearly new, and spliced iu the middle; aud two PiuB, with three nicks filed on the top, forming the broad arrow. Supposed by two men on trauip :— one about 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, large nose, dark complexion, and no whiskers ; dressed in a large tlat cap, with peak, dark coat, out at elbows, cord trousers, broken at knees ; the other about 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 to 6 inches high, light POLICE GAZETTE. By a man about 23 yrs. of age, about 5 ft. 4 inches high, straight blacfc hair, dark complexion, full features, thick lips, one side of face blotched ( supposed l « ft), apparently from erysipelas; dressed in dark coat and trousers, old claret- coloured necktie, high square- crowned felt hat, carries an umbrella, and has an old navy chart in his possession, and states he has been a sailor.
