Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE n. ay be made and addressed to the Editor, 1' olice Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended,. and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, o£ the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for tho insertion of any articlc in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must he prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. Tho Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and e£ Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, shoidd be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of tie reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'no persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the propeity, without the apprehension of the offender. Stolen from the person at the Raikes Hall Gardens, Blackpool, during the races ou 18th instant:— a gentleman's gold lever Watch, linker, John Slater, July, 1847, bad gold Albert Guard, and large gold Seal, with polished stoue attached ; also an old- fashioned gold verge Watch, white dial and double cases. Stolen from the person, in Langholm, on 9th instant:— an English patent lever Watch, No. 12975, silver dial, gold chaptered, engine turned cases, steel hands, and seconds ; iiad a Chain attached. Information to the Chief Constable, Dumfries.— Bow- st., September 20. Stolen from the person, at 8 p. m. on 16th instant, at Farnworth Railway Station, Widnes :— a silver hunting lever Watch, plain cases, white dial, sunk seconds maker— Wood- ruffe, Liverpool, No. 2714, has ' James Howard, Knotty Ash, 1878,' engraved inside case ; also a gold Albert with bar and small gold Locket attached. £ 3 reward will be paid for the recoveiy of the Watch and conviction of the thief. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom tliey are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." INFORMATIONS ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Description of a man who gives the name of GEORGE WILSON, states that he is a native of Hard wick, Manchester, a tramping blacksmith, remanded till 28th inst., on a charge of setting fire to a Hay Stack :— he is 32 years of age, 5 feet 7$ inches high, sunburnt complexion dark brown hair and whiskers, grey eyes, large nose, long and narrow face, and lost end of light thumb to first joint; dressed in old dark grey jacket, grey twill vest, cord trousers, grey cloth cap, and red plaid scarf. States that he has been tramping the country for the last three years, and that he was sentenced to two months imprisonment at Peinstone, Yorkshire, for vagrancy, and was released from Wakefield Prison on 21st May last. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Checketts, County Police Office, Worcester.— Bow- street, September 22. FORGERY. Absconded, charged on a warrant with forgery :— GEO. FERRIS SOBEY, late of No. 4, Stonefield- street, Islington, London, 38 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, black hair and large black Dundreary whiskers, turning grey, no moustache, and round head ; dressed in black diagonal cutaway walking coat, black vest, mixed tweec trousers, napless high black hat, aud a dark mixture plaid ulster coat; a solicitor's clerk, and formerly a solicitor at Exeter, where he has friends. Stolen fnm the person, on 15th inst., in Sunderland :— a silver Geneva lever keyless Watch, has been gilded over, but g lt ia much worn off, white dial, has ' G. L.', and' No. 8284' ^ ngraveo on ina de of outer case, aud has engraved on the dome ' No. 80284,' and some French words. Wood, Information at BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions at Maidstone, on two charges of housebreaking at Lenham, Kent: - JOHN RUSHFORTH, 26 years of age, 5 feet 2 inf. high, fair complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, and mouf- tache; dressed in old black coat d irk tweed trousers, and black billycock hat. Slates he is a decorator bv trade, and has friends living at West Smithfield, City, London. Infor- mation to Inspector Baker, Kent Constabulary, Maidstone.— Bow- street, September 27. Committed for trial at Assizes, for burglary, at Shotover House, Oxon, on the night of Sth instaut: — JOHN HARTLEY, 35 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, sallow complexion, supposed served in army, three moles left cheek, two back of neck, three on left shoulder, two left side, five light, boil mark right breast, anchor tattooed on back of left hand, and tattoo marks on left forearm ; dressed in dark morning coat and vest, dark striped tweed trousers, and light check cloth helmet- shaped cap, has several recent scalp wounds, a severe contusion of light elbow, and remains of black eyes, has been circumcised. £ b reward will be paid to whoever shall clearly identify and give information as to the antecedents of this man. Stolen by means of burglary, at Headcorn, Kent, during the night of 24th instant:— a silver Dessert Spoon, marked ' J.' ; a do. do., marked ' J. G.'; a do. Tea Spoon ; and a do., Mustard Spoou ; two electro- plated Table Spoons ; four do., Dessert Forks ; a pair do. Sugar Tongs, mirked ' G. McM. 1; a do. Cruet Stand with G bottles; and a mahogany Writing Desk, containing a black ebony Pipe with ivory mouthpiece. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Brinsford, on 23rd instanta black cloth Jacket, single- breasted, florentine buttons, pockets on hips ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, full fall, and unstretched at the back of left hip; a grey Vest, double breasted, with collar, all youths' size; and a blue and white bundle Handkerchief. Supposed by a tramp who was seen near the place, aud was carrying a bundle tied in a handkerchief similar to the one stolen, about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskeis, medium build ; dressed in a dark cap, grey jacket, moleskin trousers which were ragged at the bottom aud very dirty with red soil or clay, information to Inspector Gilbride, Tettenhall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen from a field near the gas works, Oswestry, on the night of 19th instant:— a dark chestnut horse Pony, 3 years old, 12 hands high, mane and tail greyish colour, thick neck, and short legs ; property of Dr. Beresford, Oswestry, who will pay £ 5 reward to any person giving such information aa shall lead to its recovery, and conviction of the offeuder or offenders. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen on 3rd instant, from Ashdown Forest, in Mansfield, Sussex :— a deep red aud white Heifer, years old, and in milk. Information to Mr. Supt Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, September 27.* Found, supposed stolen, in Durham, on 10th instant:— - a dark chestnut mare Pony, aged, 14i hands high, white face, white hairs on back under saddle, and broken knees. Wanted at Adpar, on a charge of stealing a Horse, eti the night of 10th ultimo ( reco/ ered), a man about 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, stout build, brown hair, light ragged whiskers and moustache, looks heavy and sleepy, stiff in walking, and stoops a little, is a Welshman, and spoke broken English ; dressed in a suit of dark clothes, the coat being short Glamorganshire fashion, having four buttons at the back, and strong navvy boots. 2 POLICE GAZETTE. Stolen from Droitwich, on 18th instaut:— a black cob Horse, 10 years old, 14 hands high, one white hind fetlock, white star on forehead, wall eyes, and in good condition ; supposed gone in direction of Birmingham. Information to Head Constable Colley, Police Station, Droitwich, Worcester. — Bow- street, September 24. Stolen on 19th or 20th instant, from a field near How- grave :— 3 North Ewes, and 6 twice crossed shearling Sheep, marked ' T. L.' in an oval on the left side in tar. Information to Deputy Chief Coustable Walmsley, Northallerton, or to Inspector Hutchinson, N. U. C., Wath, Ripon.— Bow- street; September 24. Stolen from a field at Longford, during the night of the 15th instant :— a brown half- bred Horse, 5 years old, about 15 hauds high, fore feet shod with leather, had a bit of skin knocked off the off hind leg inside the hock. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Police Office, Gloucester.— Bow- street, September 24. LARCENY AMD EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen at Ocle Pitchard, on 21st instant:— a grey woollen Shirt, small man's size, darned on the collar, and a red stripe on wristbands. Supposed by an Irishman, 24 years of age' 5 feet 7 inches high, long features, very red hair aud mous- tache ; dressed in a dark coat, cap, new plaid scarf, and grey trousers; may be found in hop- yards or at farm- houses; supposed a native of Ebbw Yale, or Abergavenny, Mon- mouthshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Ovens, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, September 27. Charged with embezzling £ 22 13s. ld., the Monies of the Brancepeth No. 2, Lodge of the Durham Miner's Associa- tion :— THOMAS GAFFNEY, 28 years . f age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, no whiskers, slight thin moustache, lighter tbau his hair, slender figure, small features, roman nose, shaip at end, a miner; dressed in blue rep coat, dark cloth trousers aud vest, elastic- side boots, hard low- crowned felt hat; is of smart respectable appearance, and of good address Information to Mr. Supt. Dunn, Couuty Constabulary Office, Durham.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen on 22ud instant, at Wilsford:— three Trowels, one about 12 inches long, nearly new, but a little rusty, another about 10^ inches long, rather round at the point, is a right handed trowel, but has been worked by a left handed man, and the other 8 or 9 inches long, with a very thiu handle, ' W. H. S. Hunt & Sons,' makers ; also stolen at the same time, a Line, nearly new, and spliced iu the middle; aud two Pins, with three nicks filed on the top, forming the broad arrow. Supposed by two men on tramp :— one about 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, large nose, dark complexion, and no whiskers ; dressed in a large flat cap, with peak, dark coat, out at elbows, cord trousers, broken at knees ; the other about 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 to G inches high, light hair aud moustache; dressed iu black hard billy hat, dark coat, and cord trousers. Information to Mr. Superintendent Steveuitt, Sleaford, Lincolnshire.— Vow- street, September 27. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement : — JOHN PIPPEN, of Somersetshire, a shoemaker, 36 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, slight make, and walks rather stooping ; dressed in dark coat turning brown, cord trousers, and hard felt hat with cloth mourning baud ; carries a large carpet bag containing tools ; Has been a soldier, and is a member of the Hearts of Oak Society. Information to Mr. Supt. Silvester, Police Station, Worthing, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 27. Absconded on 20th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— JOHN OGILVIE STOREY, 30, Oriental- street, East India Dock road, a clerk, 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, small dark moustache and whiskers, aquiline nose, slim build ; dress, long dark frock coat, high hat,; well known in the neighbourhood of Crisp- st., Poplar, and Blackwall Point. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London, Police Office, 26, Old Jury, E. C.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen on 24th instant, at Aldershot, an aluminium gold double- cased Watcu, supposed No. 3198, white dial, has a crack on dial from figure 7 to 9. By a man about 23 yrs. of age, about 5 ft. 4 iuches high, straight blacit hair, dark complexion, full features, thick lips, one side of face blotched ( supposed left), apparently from erysipelas; dressed iu dark coat and trousers, old claret- coloured necktie, high squate- crowned felt hat, carries au umbrella, and has an old navy chart in his possession, and states ho has been a sailor. Is supposed to belong to Witley Hill, Reading. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- st., September 27. Absconded on 25th instant, from Eastbourne, Sussex charged with stealing a dark pepper- and- salt coloured cutaway Coat, with black bone buttons, one pocket inside left breast, and pockets at each side outside with flaps, had two Pocket- handkerchiefs in pockets, one white, and the other white with yellow border :— a man, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet -. 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, slightly pitted with small , pox, brown hair, slight moustache, no whiskers or beard, proportionate figure, a bricklayer ; dressed in drab bedford cord trousers, white soft billycock hat, white neckerchief, and new lace- up boots ; he is supposed to be accompanied by a man, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 10 iuches high, medium build ; dressed in black soft billycock hat, black coat, cord trousers, and white neckerchief. Information to Mr. Supt. Newnham, East Sussex Constabulary, Eastbourne.— Bow- street, September 27. Stolen on 2 2nd instant, from 14, St. Margaret's- terrace, St. Leonards- on- Sea :— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, maker— Baume, No. 129390; a lady's gold English lever Watch; 2 plated short Chains ; an oval gold Brooch, glass at back ; and a pair square gold Ear- rings, with diamond in centre. Sup- posed by a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair, a few light whiskers and moustache; dressed in loose summer coat, grey trousers, and hard round felt hat, and carried a small black bag. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Glenister, Hastings.— Bow- street, September 24. Description of Mons. EUGINE PELOUBET, French- man, a tutor in schools, who absconded from Aberystwith, Cardiganshire, on 31st July last, charged on warrant with stealing ( as bailee) from W. R. Wheatly, a 48 inch, ' special express' Bicycle, by T. Deney, painted black, with thick amber lines :— 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark thick curly hair, and small dark moustache, eyes slightly Chinese, chin fine, broad head, chest and shoulders, athletic, walks with a short quick step, agreeable address, simles when speaking, and speaks English fluently generally dressed in grey, with knickerbockers. Information to Mr. Supt. Lloyd, County Constabulary, Aberystwith. - Bow- street, Sept. 24. Stolen between 17th and 20th instant, from a stable at the Maiden Head Hotel, Uckfield, Sussex :— a Mackintosh, with cape, black outside, aud stone colour inside, one pocket on the right side, is not reversible. By the ostler, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, rather dark com- plexion, brown hair, clean shaved, stout built, has been in the army ; dressed in a brown tweed ,; uit, stand- up shirt collar, round hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, September 24. Description of JAMES CHARLES HALL, alias COCKBURN, charged on warrant with stealing 2 Watches ( one since recovered), a silver Lever Watch, No. 1859, maker's name J. She is accompanied by a man named William Taylor, about 3G years of age, 5 feet 7- i inches high, and light complexion and hair ; dressed in hairy cap, turned up aud tied in front, old grey mixture jacket, moleskin trousers and vest, and lace- up boots. She was sentenced to 7 years penal servitude on Sth January, 1874, at Staffordshire General Quarter Sessions for felouv. Information to Chief Supt.
