Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, " W. C. » „* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is giren, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with ' the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be mado. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded . on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of tl e reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of tho property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Stolen from the person, at 8 p. m. on 16th instant, at Farnworth Railway Station, Widnes :— a silver hunting lever Watch, plain cases, white dial, sunk seconds, maker— Wood- ruffe, Liverpool, No. 2714, has ' James Howard, Knotty Ash, 1878,' engraved inside case ; also a gold Albert with bar and small gold Locket attached. £ 3 reward will be paid for the recoveiy of the Watch and conviction of the thief. Stolen from the person, at the entrance to the Belle Vue Gardens, Gorton, at 930 p. m., llth instant:— a silver lever Watch, gold balance, No. 208000. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- st., Sept. 17. Description of two navvies, charged with violently and indecently assaulting a female, iu St. Albans, on llth instant, and stealing a white Pocket- handkerchief, marked ' Hanley.' Both are about 34 years of age, one about 5 feet 9 inches high, the other about 5 feet 6 inches high, aud stoutly built; both dressed iu light long fustian coats. They can be iden- tified. Stolen from the person, at the Alton Towers Flower Show :— a gold Watch, enamelled face, seconds hands, No. 26,877, a gold albert Chain attached, on chain was a gold Seal, horse and greyhound cut on the stone of seal ; on the dome of watch is engraved, 1 Presented to Mr. William Fiander, by the Brewers rnd licensed Victuallers of Netherton, for his honourable conduct during 17 years'— dated, 2lst November, 1872. Stolen from the person, at Chesterton, about 1 a. m. on 12th iustant :— a silver lever Watch with silver dial and gold figures, large size, No. 50284, and maker's name ' F. Skerratt, Newcastle,' engraved on works. Information to Sergeant Locker, Chesterton, Staffordshire.— Bow- st, September 15. Stolen by means of burglary at Ashtead, Surrey, between 11 and 12 p. m., 16th instaut :— three £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. ( supposed) 95687, 95688, 95689. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Wistow, Hunts, on 9th instant:—£ 130 in Gold, mostly sovereigns, and a small amount of silver Money. Supposed by a mau who was seen near the house about 1030 a. m , about 28 or 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, long light moustache, no whiskers, proportionate build; diessed in dark cloth stitched hat, short dark coat, dark trousers which are wide at bottoms, and elastic- side boots. Wore a silver albert Chain, aud had the appearance of a mechanic. Can be identified. Information to Inspector Allen, Ramsey, Huntingdonshire.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen by means of burglary, from a house at Wide Bargate, Boston, on 17th instant:— a dozan pearl- hafted dessert Knives and Forks ; a pair of electro- plated fish Carvers, handles of same material ; a pair of electro- plated grape Scissors, imitation of grapes on handle ; a silver mustard Pot, plain pattern, chased rouud top and silver Spoon to fit; a silver mustard Spoon, marked 1 S.'; two pairs of silver sugar Tongs, one pair plain pattern, marked ' S.', other fancy pattern ; two silver tea Spoons, marked ' S.'; an electro- plated sugar Sifter; an electroplated sugar Spoon, plain handle, chased bottom, and marked ' S.'; and 2s. in Money, consisting of small Silver and Coppers. A reward of £ 10 wilt be paid to any person who shall give such informa- tion as -^ ill lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the property. Information to Mr. Supt. Hulse, Kent Constabulary, West Mailing. — Bow- street, September 20. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Description of a man who gives the name of GEORGE WILSON, states that he is a native of Hardwick, Manchester, a tramping blacksmith, remanded till 28th inst., on a charge of setting fire to a Hay Stack :— he is 32 years of age, 5 feet 7J inches high, sunburnt complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, grey eyes, large nose, long and narrow face, and lost end of right thumb to first joint; dressed in old dark grey jacket, grey twill vest, cord trousers, grey cloth cap, and red plaid scarf. States that he has been tramping the country for the last three years, and that he was sentenced to two months imprisonment at Peinstone, Yorkshire, for vagrancy, and was released from Wakefield Prison on 21st May last. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Checketts, County Police Office, Worcester.— Bow- street, September 22. Absconded on llth instant, from 39, King Henry's- road, Hampstead, charged with arson :— a woman, 42 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather dark complexion, hair turning grey, medium forehead, nose rather long and red at tip, and ordinary mouth and chin ; dressed in dark blue cloth ( light blue silk stripe round), crape bonnet. May be found at Henley- on- Thames. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, Sept 15. FORGERY. Absconded, charged on a warrant with forgery :— GEO. FERRIS SOBEY, late of No. 4, Stonefield- street, Islington, London, 38 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, black hair and large black Dundreary whiskers, turning grey, no moustache, and round head ; dressed in black diagonal cutaway walking coat, black vest, mixed tweed trousers, napless high black hat, and a dark mixture plaid ulster coat; a solicitor's clerk, and formerly a solicitor at Exeter, where he has friends. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at East Farleigh, Kent, on llth instant :— a silver Geneva hunting Watch, and gold plated Albert attached ; a dark cloth Overcoat; and a drab Suit with small red stripe. By a man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion and'mous- tache, small imperial, no whiskers, bald head, Roman nose, shifts his shoulders when walking, and is a painter; dressed in the stolen clothes. Information to Inspector Baker, Kent Constabulary, Wren's Cross, Maidstone.— Bow- street, September 15. Further information respecting the housebreaking at Mr. Hunt's, Iford, Hants, on llth ultimo. Warrants have been issued for the apprehension of— JOHN GEARY, alias GEORGE REYNARD, a button maker, 52 years of age, 5 feet 9} inches high, pale complexion, grey hair and eyes, oval face, proportionate build, scar left brow and on neck, long thin nose, and mole on left of back. And THOS. CLIFFORD, alias DURRANT, a carpenter, 42 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, stout build, oval face, mole top of left shoulder and right of back, aud red mark on each buttook. These men are also wanted for failing to report themselves. Information to Detective Sergeant Street, Hants Consta- bulary, Winchester.— Bow- street, September 15. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Newland, near Malvern, Worcestershire, on 9th instant, between 7 a. m. and 7 pm. :— an open faced verge Watch, maker's name Thomas Corker, dial broken between the 8 an! 9, Nos, 364 or 365 ; a black ribbed frock Coat; a black cloth Jacket; a black cloth Vest; a pair of black cloth Trousers; a pair of drab striped Trousers; a pair of light grey woollen Trousers ; a pair of tweed Trousers ; 2 white calico Shirts, linen fronts ; a white calico Shirt; 3 new pocket Handkerchiefs— a white, a pink, and a straw colour; a black silk Necktie; a pair of man's Shoes, almost new. Stolen by means of housebreaking, from a cottage at Stoulton, near Worcester, on 13th instant: a silver verge Watch, minute hand broken, dial cracked ; a pepper and salt Jacket and Trousers; a dark ribbsd cloth Vest; a pair of moleskin Trousers ; 2 light plaid cotton Shirts ; a red Hand- kerchief, with white spots. Found, supposed stolen, in Durham, on 10th instant;— a dark chestnut mare Pony, aged, 14. J hands high, white face, white hairs on back under saddle, and broken knees. Infor- mation to the Chief Constable, City Police, Claypath, Durham. — Bow- sireet, September 24. Wanted at Adpar, on a charge of stealing a Horse, on the night of 10th ultimo ( recovered), a man about 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, stout build, brown hair, light ragged whiskers and moustache looks heavy and sleepy, stiff in walking, and stoops a little, is a Welshman, and spoke broken English ; dressed in a suit of dark clothes, the coat being short Glamorganshire fashion, having four buttons at the back, and strong navvy boots. September 15 Stolen from Droitwich, on 18th instant:— a black cob Horse, 10 years old, 14 hands high, one white hind fetlock, white star on forehead, wall eyes, and in good condition ; supposed gone in direction of Birmingham. Information to Head Constable Colley, Police Station, Droitwich, " Worcester. — Bo street, September 24. Stolen, on 19th or 20th instant, from a field near How- grave :— 3 North Ewes, and 6 twice crossed shearling Sheep, marked ' T. L.' in an oval on the left side in tar. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Walmsley, Northallerton, or to Inspector Hutchinson, N. R. C., Wath, Ripon.— Bow- street, September 24. Stolen from a field at Longford, during the night of the 15th instant:— a brown half- bred Horse, 5 years old, about 15 hands high, fore feet shod with leather, had a bit of skin knocked off the off hind leg inside the hock. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Police Office, Gloucester.— Bow- street, September 24. Stolen from a field, at Bickenhill, on 25th ultimo, a Horse ( recovered), by three young men, one of whom, named WILLIAM SMITH, has been apprehended and committed for trial. The other two wanted are— WALTER JONES, late of Farm- street, Birmingham, scrap dealer, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, black hair, clean shaven ; generally- dressed in a snuff- coloured suit of clothes; WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, late of Erasmus- road, Sparkbrook, Birming- ham, 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, and slightly built; dressed in black or dark suit of clothes. Jones is a married man, and is supposed to have removed to some other town, and will probably carry on his trade of scrap dealer. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Solihull, Warwickshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehension— Bow- street, Sept. 17. Description of a horse Pony and a business Cart ( sup- posed stolen), left at Hertford on 3rd instant:— by a man between 40 and 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in light clothes, and hard felt hat; he left a dark grey ovorcoat aud straw hat; in the pockets of the coat was a billhead with the name of ' William Allcock, wine and spirit merchaut, Commercial and Family Hotel, High- street, Seven- oaks,' printed on it; also a bottle with a printed label,' E. Miller, dispensing chemist, 4, Donegal- place, Lower Clapton, E.' The Cart is paiuted with a dark colour, picked out with red, bent Bhafts, no name on caps, and two dark American cloth cushions. The Horse is dark brown, 5 years old, about 12 hands high, long mane and tail, and star on forehead, plated Harness and rush Collar; a leather Collar and a long Whip were left in the trap. The man has not been heard of in Hertford since he left. Information to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Bow- street, September 17. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on 2 2nd instant, from 14, St. Margaret's- tcrrace, St. Leonards- on- sea:— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, maker— Baume, No. 129390; a lady's gold English lever Watch; 2 plated short Chains ; an oval gold Brooch, glass at back ; and a pair square gold Ear- rings, with diamond in centre. Sup- posed by a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair, a few light whiskers and moustache; dressed in loose summer coat, grey trousers, and hard round felt hat, and carried a small black bag. Information to Mr. Chief Supt, Glenister, Hastings.— Bow- street, September 24. Description of Mons. EUGINE PELOUBET, French- man, a tutor in schools, who absconded from Aberystwith, Cardiganshire, on 31st July last, charged on warrant with stealing ( as bailee) from W. R. Wheatly, a 48 inch, ' special express' Bicycle, by T. Deney, painted black, with thick amber lines :— 25 years of age, 6 feet 5 inches high, dark thick curly hair, and small dark moustache, eyes slightly Chinese, chin fine, broad head, chest and shoulders, athletic, walks with a short quick step, agreeable address, simles when speakiug, and speaks English fluently ; generally dressed in grey, with knickerbockers. Information to Mr. Supt. Lloyd, County Constabulary, Aberystwith. - Bow- street, Sept. 24. Stolen between 17th and 20th instant, from a stable at the Maiden Head Hotel, Uckfield, Sussex :— a Mackintosh, with cape, black outside, and stone colour inside, one pocket on the right side, is not reversible. By the ostler, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, rather dark com- plexion, brown hair, clean shaved, stout built, has been in the army ; dressed in a brown tweed suit, stand- up shirt collar, round hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, September 24. Description of JAMES CHARLES HALL, alias COCKBURN, charged on warrant with stealing 2 Watches ( one since recovered), a silver Lever Watch, No. 1859, maker's name J. Howarth, Rochdale ( not recovered) :— 34 years of age, 6 feet high, dark bloated complexion, black hair, red nose, shabby appearance ; dressed in dark mixture coat and vest, black cord trousers ( very greasy), and soft billycock hat. He is a tramping watchmaker, a Scotchman, last residence Golcar. Stated his intention o£ going through Dewsbury, Leeds, aud York to Newcastle- on- Tyneo. Information to Mr. Supt. Goodall, West Riding Constabulary, Huddersfield. — Bow- street, September 24. Stolen from a stable, at Stainsacre, between 7 p. m. on 19th and 0 a. m. on 20th instant, a drab diagonal cloth Jacket, velvet collar, lined with plaid horse sheeting, and trimmed with dark bone buttons, new, pocket in each lap outside and one inside left lap; also a woollen cord Vest, partly worn, double breasted, fastens with two white bone buttons, the rest are off, pockets with flaps outside and one pocket inside. Supposed by a mau wh^ had been harvesting at the farm, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair com- plexion, light brown hair and beard, about a fortnight's growth, has recently had all his hair cut off, and r.. ther thin features ; dressed in a pair of cotton cord trousers, brown canvas jumper, black cap, and may be wearing the stolen coat and vest. Stated In was a native of Dover, and had recently been engaged fishing at Yarmouth. It is probable he may go to Scarboro' or Bridlington, and endeavour to get the steamer for Hull or engage on board some fishing boat. Information to Mr. Supt. Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 22. Further information respecting the gold watches, stolen from the shop of Mr. Fuchter, Maidstone, on 10th instant :— a 3- plate gold bunting lever; a ditto, maker's Parkinson, and Bants ; 2 gold keyless ditto, Nos. 12381, and 61G82 ; a ditto Crystal, No. 94049; a ditto, 30131 ; a ditto, large dial, No. 85079. By a young man of respectable appearance, who carried a black bag, and who is supposed to reside in the neighbourhood of Soho, London. Information to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone,— Bow- street, September 22. Stolen between 3 afad 5 p. m. 15th instant, out of a garden, at Worsall:— a drainers Spit, very rusty, and has a piece broken out at end. 3y a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion and moustache, stoutish figure ; dressed in dark greycoat, torn at the shoulders, white moleskin trousers, and dark cap. Information to Mr. Supt. Simpson, N. R. Constabulary, South Stockton— Bow- street, September 20. Charged on warrant with embezzlement: — JOSEPH METCALF COCKING, a merchants clerk, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportionate build, fair complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, and heavy whiskers, inclined to be red, walks with body very erect, rather in kneed, and of good address ; dressed in dark grey suit, and tall Bilk hat Has a brother in the London Police, his father lives at Winterton, Lincolnshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Harper, Great Driffield.— Bow- street, September 20. He appears to have travelled about the country a great deal. He says he was employed for about 12 mouths in the Corporation Stables, Birmingham, and was fined £ 1 for assaulting one of the men there. He is now in custody at Malvern Police Station, charged with entering some stables at Malvern Wells on Monday night, and stealing a large quantity of wearing apparel ( recovered). MARY BROWN, alias ISABELLA BROWN, and ANN JONES, 40 years of age, 5 feet 6i inches high, sallow com- plexion, black hair, dark brown eyes, small cut on right wrist, lost top tooth. Was convicted of felony, after previous conviction, at Salford, 5th July, 1875, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and 7 years police supervision. Discharged 8th April, 1880. JOSEPH GIBBONS, 31 years of age, 5 feet 7j inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes, face freckled, cut bridge of nose, end of left little finger gone, and double ruptured. Was convicted of larceny, at Liverpool, on October 28th, 1874, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude. Discharged May 26th, 1880. CATHERINE ROURKE, alias ROOKE, MURPHY, and WILLIAMS, 85 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches hign, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, lost several front teeth, cut centre of forehead aud bridge of nose, scar on right wrist, moles above left wrist, above right elbow, and on right cheek. Was convicted on December lst, 1870, at the Man cheater Assizes, and sentenced to 10 years penal servitude, and 5 years polise supervision, for uttering base coin. Liberated August 25th, 1880. JOHN FLANNAGAN, 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, scar bridge of nose and right arm, scar on left eyebrow, nail 3rd finger left hand split. Convicted at Salford Sessions on January 12th, 1874, for housebreaking at Bury, and liberated on June 30th, 1879. Sentence 7 years, and 7 years police supervision. JAMES HANSON, 35 years of age, 5 feet 3i inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, much pock- marked, lost several teeth, wart back of neck, scar on each buttock, one on right and two on left leg. Was convicted of larceny, at Manchester, on May 26th, 1873, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and 7 years police supervision. Liberated December 19th, 1878. JOHN DIXON, alias NIXON, 49 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh complexion, browu hair, grey eyes, paralysis right arm and foot. Was convicted at Manchester Sessions August 7th, 1879, and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, and 7 years police supervision.
