A Description, as accurate as possible, of Propert that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. & g 8tot& orft& Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Ifame8 and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of tie reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persona forwarding them. INFORMATIONS ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Absconded on 11th instant, from 39, King Henry's- road, Hampstead, charged with| arson :— a woman, 42 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather dark complexion, hair turning grey, medium forehead, nose rather long and red at tip, and ordinary mouth and chin ; dressed in dark blue cloth ( light blue silk stripe round), crape bonnet. May be found at Henley- on- Thames. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, Sept 15. EOBBEEY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person, in Langholm, on 9tli instant:— an English patent lever Watch, No. 12975, silver dial, gold chaptered, engine turned cases, steel hands, and seconds ; had a Chain attached. Information to the Chief Constable, Dumfries.— Bowst., September 20. Stolen from the person, at 8 p. m. on 16th instant, at Farnworth Railway Station, Widnes :— a silver hunting lever Watch, plain cases, white dial, sunk seconds, maker— Wood ruffe, Liverpool, No. 2714, has ' James Howard, Knotty Ash, 1878/ engraved inside case ; also a gold Albert with bar and small gold Locket attached. £ Z reward will be paid for the recovery of the Watch and conviction of the thief. Stolen from the person, at the entrance to the Belle Vue Gardens, Gorton, at 9 30 p. m., 11th instant:— a silver lever Watch, gold balance, No. 208000. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- st., Sept. 17. Description of two navvie3, charged with violently and indecently assaulting a female, in St. Albans, on 11th instant, and stealing a white Pocket- handkerchief, marked ' Hanley.' Both are about 34 years of age, one about 5 feet 9 inches high, the other about 5 feet G inches high, and stoutly built; both dressed in light long fustian coats. They can be iden- tified. Information to Mr. Superintendent Pike, Police Office, St. Albans, Hertfordshire.— Bow- street, September 15. Stolen from the person, at the Alton Towers Flower Show :— a gold Watch, enamelled face, seconds hands, No. 26,877, a gold albert Chain attached, on chain was a gold Seal, horse and greyhound cut on the stone of seal; on the dome of watch is engraved,' Presented to Mr. William Fiander, by the Brewers and licensed Victuallers of Netherton, for his honourable conduct during 17 years'— dated, 21st November, 1872. Stolen from the person, at Chesterton, about 1 a. m. on 12th instant :— a silver lever Watch with silver dial and gold figures, large size, No. 50284, and maker's name ' F. Skerratt, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of burglary at Ashtead, Surrey, between 11 and 12 p. m., 16tli instant :— three £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. ( supposed) 95687, 95688, 95689. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Wistow, Hunts, on 9th instant:—,£ 130 in Gold, mostly sovereigns, and a small amount of silver Money. Supposed by a man who was seen near the house about 10- 30 a. m , about 28 or 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fatr complexion, light hair, long light moustache, no whiskers, proportionate build ; dressed in dark cloth stitched hat, short dark coat, dark trousers which are wide at bottoms, and elastic- side boots. Wore a silver albert Chain, and had the appearance of a mecharjic. Can be identified. Information to Inspector Allen, Ramsey, Huntingdonshire.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen by means of burglary, from a house at Wide Bargate, Boston, on 17th instant:— a dozen pearl- hafted dessert Knives and Forks ; a pair of electro- plated fish Carvers, handles of tame material; a pair of electro- plated grape Scissors, imitation of grapes on handle ; a silver mustard Pot, plain pattern, chased round top and silver Spoon to fit; a silver mustard Spoon, marked ' S.' ; two pairs of silver sugar Tongs, one pair plain pattern, marked ' S.', other fancy pattern ; two silver tea Spoons, marked ' S.'; an electro- plated sugar Sifter; an electro plated sugar Spoon, plain handle, chased bottom, and marked ' S.'; and 2s. in Money, cmsisting of small Silver and Coppers. A reward of £ 10 will be paid to any person who shall give such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the property. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Hunton, Kent, on 15th instant:— an old silver lever Watch, case blackened by sulphur ; a small American Clock; a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a dark grey Vest; 2 short Albert Chains, washed with gold ; a pair of small silver Ear- rings; a Brooch to match ; a pair of Eardrops, in small red box ; 2 small dark handled pocket Knives, and 1 white handle ; a silk Umbrella; a leather clasp Purse, containing 6d.; a pair of men's light lace- up Boots ; a pair of women's leather lace- up Boots ; and a pair of Indian wire Bracelets. Information to Mr. Supt. Hulse, Kent Constabulary, West Mailing. — Bow- street, September 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at East Farleigli, Kent, on 11th instant :— a silver Geneva hunting Watch, and gold plated Albert attached ; a dark cloth Overcoat; and a drab Suit with small red stripe. By a man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion and mous- tache, small imperial, no whiskers, bald head, Roman nose, shifts his shoulders when walking, and is a painter ; diessed in the stolen clothes. Information to Inspector Baker, Kent Constabulary, Wren's Cross, Maidstone.— Bow- street, September 15. Further information respecting the housebreaking at Mr. Hunt's, Iford, Hants, on 11th ultimo. Warrants have been issued for the apprehension of— JOHN GEARY, alias GEORGE REYNARD, a button maker, 52 years of age, 5 feet 9J inches high, pale complexion, grey hair and eyes, oval face, proportionate build, scar left brow and on neck, long thin nose, and mole on left of back. And THOS. CLIFFORD, alias DURRANT, a carpenter, 42 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, stout build, oval face, mole top of left shoulder and right of back, and red mark on each buttock. " Wanted on two charges of burglary :— CHARLES CAIN, deserter from 23rd Regiment of Foot, Wrexham, 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, no whiskers or moustache, dark brown hair, sore grey eyebrows, for which he has been under medical treatment, front teeth decayed, tattooed on both arms, hart on right arm, born at Abergavenny ; supposed dressed in a black cloth surtout coat, or brown summer overcoat, and elastic- side Oxford shoes, recently soled. Information to Deputy Chief Countable Wilde, Wrexham, who holds a wan- ant for his apprehension, — Bow- street, Sept. 15. HORSE AnD CATTLE STEALING. The dark bay Mare, stolen from Audenshaw, near Ashton- under- Lyne, during the night of 1st instant, and advertized in the Police Gazette of 15th instant, has been recovered, and restored to owner. The light bar Mare is still missing.— Bow- striet, September 20. Stolen [ from a field, at Bickenhill, on 25th ultimo, a Horse ( recovered), by three young men, one of whom, named WILLIAM SMITH, has been apprehended and committed trial. The other two wanted are— WALTER JONES, 0 Farm- street, Birmingham, scrap dealer, 21 years of feet 5 inches high, black hair, clean shaven ; generally , d in a snuff- coloured suit of clothes; WILLIAM STRONG, late of Erasmus- road, Sparkbrook, Birming- 8 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, . vn hair, and slightly built; dressed in black or dark ithes. Jones is a married man, and is supposed to ved to some other town, and will probably carry on * scrap dealer. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, ~ ar wick shire, who holds a warrant for their \— Bow- street, Sept. 17. . iption of a horse Pony and a business Cart ( sup- ^ ... ulen), left at Hertford on 3rd instant:— by a man between 40 and 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in light clothes, and hard felt hat; he left a dark grey ovorcoat and strajjv hat ; in the pockets of the coat was a billhead with the name of ' William Allcock, wine and spirit merchant, Commercial and Family Hotel, High- street, Seven- oaks,' printed on it; also a bottle with a printed label,' E. Miller, dispensing chemist, 4, Donegal- place, Lower Clapton, E.' The Cart is painted with a dark colour, picked out with red, bent shafts, no name on caps, and two dark American cloth cushions. The Horse is dark brown, 5 years old, about 12 hands high, long mane and tail, and star on forehead, plated harness and rush Collar; a leather Collar and a long Whip were left in the trap. The man has not been heard of in Hertford since he left. Information to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Bow- street, September 17. Supposed stolen from a field, at Sheepwalk Farm, Onecot, near Leek, between 9 p. m. 3rd, and 5 a. m. 4th instant:— a small black Welsh Cow, about 6 years old, little white on face, one horn turns up, and the other turns down, in calf, and in good condition, value £ 12. Information to Mr. Supt. Williams, Police Office, Leek, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 15. The Horse and Trap, & c., stolen from Brougham Rectory Farm, Westmoreland, during the night of 13th July last, and advertised in Police Gazette of 27th ultimo, have been recovered by the Warrington Police, and WILLIAM SMITH, alias RUSFORTH, and his brother THOMAS GIBSON SMITH, apprehended, since committed for trial at the next Westmoreland Quarter Sessions for stealing the same. Between the 14th July last and 28th ultimo, the Horse has had four new shoes put on, the hind shoes are stamped on the outside close to the heel ' J. Conde,' who is supposed to be a black- smith either in Lancashire or Cheshire. It is important to have this traced for the purpose of identification. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Spencer, Appleby.. Westmorland, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- itreet, September 15. Stolen from a field at Audenshaw, near Ashton- under- Lyne, between 5.30 p. m. 31st ultimo, and 6 a. m. 1st inst. :— a light bay part bred carc Mare, rising 5 years old, 15J hands high, small white mark in centre of forehead, black mane, tail and legs, clear legs, but large feet, higher on hind than on fore quarters, light coloured muzzle, in good working condition. £ 5 reward. The above reward will be paid upon recovery and conviction of the thieves, if stolen. Information to Mr. Snpt. Myers, County Police Office, Hurst, near Ashton- under- Lyne.— Bow- st r< el, September 15. larceny and EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen between 3 and 5 p. m. 15th instant, out of a garden, at Worsall:— a drainers Sprt, very rusty, and has a piece broken out at end. 3y a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion and moustache, stoutish figure ; dressed in dark greycoat, torn at the shoulders, white moleskin trousers, and dark cap. Information to* 1 t. Supt. Simpson, N. R, Constabulary, South Stockton - bow- street, September 20. r , -{ Charged on warrant with etui, element: — JOSEPH METCALF COCKING, a merchants clerk, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportionate build, fair complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, and heavy whiskers, inclined to be red, walks with body very erect, rather in kneed, tnl of good addrsss ; dressed in dark grey suit, and tall silk hat. Has a brother in the London Police, his father lives at Winterton, Lincolnshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Harper, Great Driffield.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen during night of 10th instant, from a new building at Devises :— 3 Trowels, one large with a notch cut in under part of the handle, about a foot long, 2 from 5 to 7 ins. long ( recovered) ; a plasterers' lath Hammer ; a bricklayer's Ham- mer, a 2- foot Rule ; and 4 bricklayers' Lines with seven pins attached. Supposed, by a man who sold the two Trowels recovered, from 35 to io years of age, about 5 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, pockmarked, bushy, sandy whiskers; dressed in black or tweed coat, cord trousers, black alpine hat, and wearing heavy lace- up boots, nailed with very large headed nails, wide apart, two or three missing in each toe ; stoutly built, and spoke with a North Country dialect. Information to Mr. Supt. Baldwin, Devises, Wiltshire.— Bow- street, Sept. 20. Description of a man who represented himself to be a Government agent, engaged to measure land, & c., for the framing, forming, and printing a new map of England, who lodged at a house in Swan- street, Alcester, from 10th till 13th instant, then left, stealing a silver Geneva Watch, No. 102443, and a silver Albert Chain, ring pattern :— from 40 to 45 years of age, sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache, brown hair, grey eyes, thin face, rings in ears, slight built, and about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, tattooed on both fore- arms, one a ship, the other obliterated ; dressed in a light mixture suit, hard felt hat, and light lace- up boots. States he has been in India, has a Victoria Cross, and is in receipt of a pension from the Service. Information to Mr. Supt. Ingram, Police Station, Alcester, or any Police Station in the cmnty of Warwick.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen from a stable at Littlecott Farm, Hillmarton, on 17th instant:— a dark mixture cloth yachting Jacket, pockets at sides, the lining of one sleeve torn, lias ' Yachting' stamped o r loop of collar Supposed by a Welshman, about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 leet 5 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, black stubby moustache, blind of one eye, supposed right, round full face, rather stout build, a labourer; dressed in cloth cap, with peak, fustian trousers, and supposed stolen jacket. Information to Mr. Supt. Barrett, Chippenham, Wilts.— Bow- street, September 20. He appears to have travelled about the country a great deal. He says he was employed for about 12 months in the Corporation Stables, Birmingham, and was fiued £ 1 for assaulting one pf th^ rnen there. He is now in custody at Malvern Police Station, charged with entering some stables at Malvern Wells on Monday night, and stealing a large quantity of wearing apparel ( recovered). JOHN OWEN, No. A 662, a convict on license, has failed to report himself at Stafford :— he is 48 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, stoutish, oval face, brown whiskers and moustache; marks— brown mark left side of hip, cut on chin, right cheek and right eyebrow, moles on left groin and left thigh, scar right thigh and right knee, several scars on back, two scars en head, aud lost nearly all his teeth. Convicted of unlawfully wour d- ing at Stafford Assizes, 14th Sept., 1874, sentence 7 years penal servitude, and nine times summarily convicted. He is a native of Ironbridge, Salop, well known in Wolverhampton, Worcester, and Kidderminster, and a notorious poacher.
