POLICE GAZETTE BTUDAVFTB. CONTAINING The substance of all Information received in ease* of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It is requosted that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Streot, London, W. C. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be mado and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Off once charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwardod to the Editor for insertion. As no chargo is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor muNt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not bo made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from tho Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from tho Militia, should bo forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will bo paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. Hall and Co., Manchester, open face, and jewelled in four holes, had attached a long heavy gold Albert, curb pattern, with cross bar, and two small Seals, one of which is inscribed with the word ' Caroline' thereon, the other opens at the bottom. Stolen at Derby on the 2nd and 3rd instant, from the person, during the races :— A gold lever Watch, old, No. 23394. A silver lever Watch, compensation balance, f- piate, jewelled in four holes, double sunk dial, No. 363260. A silver verge Watch, ' W. Barwick,' engraved on outer case. A gold Watch, white dial, No. 18151. A silver English lever Watcb, No. 2386, jewelled in four holes, open face, seconds hand, chased back, shield in centre. A gold half- hunter keyless Watch, No. 17499, ' Richard Bennett' ( owners name), and address in full, engraved inside case,' R. B.' in monogram on back. .£ 10 reward on recovery and conviction. Stolen from the dwelling- house on 3rd instant:— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, a gold Chain, twisted link pattern, oval Locket, attached; a gold scarf Pin, forget- me- not; and 25s. in Money. By a man who slept in the house one night, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, no whiskers, light complexion ; dressed in dark grey suit. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are nob now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Description of a man ( supposed an American), charged with uttering in Manchester, on 26 th, and iu- London on 30th ultimo, forged fifty dollar American Greenbacks :— 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, black beard ; dressed in dark coat, light trousers, soft billycock hat, patent leather booK It is desirable that the police should as far as practicable, caution money changers, pawnbrokers, & c., who deal in foreign notes, as there is reason to believe that this man will otfer similar forged Notes, should he do so, he is to be detained and immediate information sent to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, September 6. Wanted at- Glasgow, on a Sheriffs warrant, charged with having fraudulently obtained £ 400, by means of a forged Bill: — WILLIAM LIVINGSTON, a Commission agent, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, ordinary make, dark red hair, whiskers and moustache, had a peculiar rising of one Bide of his lip when speaking ; dressed in dark tweed suit, and round felt hat; absconded on 27th ultimo. No further steps need be taken in the matter of the burglary at Denbigh, advertised in Police Gazette of 6th instant, as the offender is in custody. — Bow- st., September 10. Stolen at Warrington, at 8 p. m. on 6th instant:—£ 73 10s. in gold, silver, and copper Monies ; a gold lever Watch, No. 81744, value £ 19 ; a plated albert Guaid, curb pattern ; cheque Book ; a bank Book ; 2 leather cash Bags ; and a leather Purse with steel clasp. Information to Chief Con- stable Hunt, Warrington.— Bow- street, September 8. Stolen, by means of burglary, at Albury, during the night of 5th instant:— a small silver Sugar Basin and Spoon, crest— a boar's head ; also two children's Cases, each contain- ing a silver Spoon and Fork ; three silver Spoons aud silver Sugar Tongs ; and one gold and one silver Pencil. Informa- tion to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- street, September 8. Stolen, by means of burglary, at Abinger Hall, on the night of 5th instant:— a small silver oval Case, containing silver Scissors and Thimble ; an elephant's tooth Snuff Box, bound with gold ; a black ditto, with gold rim, and large cameo on it. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, September 8. During the night of 31st ultimo, an ironmonger's shop at Dorking, was broken into and entered, aud stolen therefrom : — a double- barrelled breech- loading Gun, central fire, lever action ; eight dozen electro- plated table Spoons, marked J. D. S.' ; five dozen Screwdrivers, maker Hill ; four dozen Chisels, with handles, and five dozen without handles, makers Ward and Payne; twelve Spirit Levels; a number of Gimlets and Bradawls ; two flag Baskets ; and a dark water- proof Coat, with plaid lining. By a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, full face, low forehead, burn mark under left eye, and light moustache ; dressed in a blue serge jacket, black and white check trousers, and straw hat, with blue ribbon around ; was traced from Dorking to Moorgate Street Station, of the underground railway. £ 5 reward will be paid by Mr. William Rossiter, Dorking, for the apprehension and conviction of the offender. Stolen by means of burglary, from the Ash, Overcliff, Gravesend, on the night of 2nd instant :— a round gold Brooch, set with garnets; a pair of long Ear- rings, also a Locket and Ring to match brooch and ear- rings; a pair of turquoise double Ear- rings, diamond iu centre ; a pair of gold long drop Ear- rings, a pa: r of ditto, set with garnets ; 2 old Geneva Watches, out of repair, the two worth about 30s.; a gold oblong Brooch, violet stones in centre, hasp broken off; and a silver plated Vinegarette, with small gold Chain attached; and £ 25 in Gold. Informat'on to Chief Constable Berry, Gravesend, Kent.— Bow- street, Sept. 8. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Yalding, Kent, on 30th ultimo :— a* old- fashioned verge Watch, No. 1147 ; a pair of gold drop Ear Rings ; a suit of black cloth Clothes, man's size; a dark mixture Vest, a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a grey Vest, partly made ; a black and white plaid woollen Shirt; a grey ditto, with white stripe; a pair of Balmoral Boots, nearly new ; a pair heavy lace- up Shoes, the right heel of each pair is higher than the other ; a Carving Kuife and Fork, black handles ; three small Knives and Forks, black handles ; four metal Tea Spoon3, a pair of silver Studs, a black jet Brooch, 5s. in Silver, and a quantity of Provisions. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Pebworth, between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 27th ultimo :— an old fashioned gold consular verge Watch, No. 6310, winds up in face, gold face, common Key attached, with a short piece of black ribbon, and four Sovereigns. Information to Mr. Supt. Matthews, Chipping Campden, or to Sergeant Whitman, Long Marston, Gloucestershire. - Bow- street, September 6. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Wadhurst, Sussex, on 3rd instant, between 7 a. m. aud 1 p. m. :— a ladies small silver Geneva Watch, flowered back, cream coloured dial, and the mainspring broken ; a gold Ring, set with blue and white stones ; 5 old- fashioned silver Teaspoons, initials ' C. C.'; a caddy Spoon ; a pair of sugar Tongs, marked ' C. C.'; a pair of women's elastic- side kid Boots, No. 6 size, with plates on heels; £ 3 in Gold ; 4 or 5 shillings! in Silver; and a few , Coppers. Charged on warrant with housebreaking: — JAMES STEEL, 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, slight fair moustache, stoops when walking, and speaks the Yorkshire dialect; frequents race meetings, and may be found iu the company of low betting men i is accom- panied by a young man about 20 years of age, short and stout. Information to the Chief Constable, Central Police Station, Newcastle- upon- Tyne,— Bow- street, September 6. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen about 8' 30 p. m. Ctli instant, from outside the London Pavilion Music Hall, Tichbourne- street, St. James's : — a black Horse, 15 hands 3 inches high, off hind fetlock white, scars on both hind legs, short tail, well bred & ni valuable ; hansom Cab, brass mounted, painted dark green, picked out light green, ' C. T.' in gold letters on side, lined green cloth, green mat, brass lamps, electric light, Chronometer case in front, plated fittings inside ; brass- mounted Harness, crest on bridle. By a man, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair, slight moustache ; dressed in dark suit, red scarf, and bowler hat. Information to the Direfitor^ of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, 8. W — Metro jolitan Police, September 10. . v Stolen from a field at Cheadle Heath, Cheshire, about 9' 30 p. m. 3rd instant :— a bay Mare, about 16 bauds high, 8 years old, tail c it, not short, fore feet from fetlock to hoof turn in a little, white star on forehead. Was traced going across Brinksway Bridge, Stockport, about 10 p. m. tho same night in possession of a boy, about 16 years of age, and who called between 10 and'll p. m. the same night at the ' Crown Inn,' Longsight, near Manchester, and gave the mare a feed of meal aud water, and enquired the way to Newton [ Heath. Any person giving such information as will lead to the appre- hension of the oifender, and recovery cf the Mare, will be handsomely rewarded. Information to the Deputy chief Constable, County Constabulary Station, Stockport, Cheshire. — Bow- street, September 10. Stolen 7th instant, from Grove- terrace, Battersea :— a grey horse Pony,' A. C.' branded on back ; a set of patent leather Harness ; and a light spring Cart, painted dark green, back board damaged. By two men who called at the owners, and on being allowed a trial with a view to purchase at once decamped :— one 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair ; dressed in moleskin trousers, black billycock hat; the other 19 years of age. 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion; dressed in cord trousers, woollen cip, no coat or vest. W. — Metropolitan Police, September 10. t Stolen during the night of 14th ultimo, at Leyt natoue :— a dark bay mare Pony, 13 hands high, hog mane, tail cut short, star on forehead, black points, oif hind hoof cracked, and iu good condition. Stolen about 4 p m. 3rd instant, from outside Nr. 3 Leicester place, Leicester- street : - a dun colour Pony, 13 hands high, silver main aud tail, cut short; brown leather Harness, brass mounting ; and a two wheel Trap, painted black, picked out white. Information to the Director, CI D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W. Metropolitan Police, September 8. Stolen from a field at Close House, near Bishop Auck- land, on the morning of 26th ultimo :— a chestnut horse Pony, about 8 years old, 12 hands high, white face, one wall- eye ( supposed right), slit in one ear ( supposed right), cropped mane, and iu fair condition, value £ 6. A in m was feen taking the pony from the field at 2 a. m , ou the above date, of whom no description can be given. Information to Mr. Supt. Banks, Bishop Auckland, Durham.— Boui- street, Sep'. 6. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Wanted under warraut charged with stealing from au Office, ou 7th instant, £ 29, in Gold aud Silver :— JAMES COUPE, 14 years, of age, rather tall for hi- i age, light brown hair, fresh complexion, runuing sores from his ears, and wears a piece of black cilico over them ; dressed in black cap with peak, light tweed long jacket, corduroy trousers, laced boots, and black and white scarf ; is a native of Blackburn. He will probably seek employment at Tea Merchant's warehouses, or endeavour to go to sea. Information to Chief Constable Shourbrid^ e, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- street, September 10. Wanted on warrant charged with larceny, at Clayton, near Stoke- on- Trent, on 20th ultimo :- GEORGE LIGHT, a groom, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh 2 POLICE GAZETTE September 1C complexion, black hair and whisker?, medium build, walks erect, aud of smart appearance, a native of Thorndon Park, Brentwood, Essex ; dressed in black hard felt hat, black worsted coat aud vest, dark mixture trousers, and elastic- side boots, or in a blue livery overcoat, Bedford cord breeches and leggings. He is accompanied by his wife, who is about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair and complexion, and a child about G months old ; he booked from Stone, Staffordshire, for llugby, on 7th instant. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslew, or to Mr. Supt. Bowen, Stoke on- Trent, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension..— Bow- st., September 10. Charged on warrant with larceny :— JOHN LAWTON, a painter, aud a native of Newcastle, 27 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, light complexion, light hair, small mous- tache, aud near sighted; dressed in a grey mixture suit of clothes, black tie, billycock hat, spring- side boots, newly soled. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough. — Bow- street, September 10. Charged with stealing a Watch :— a sailor or fisherman, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, proportionate build, fair complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, and is of smart appearance; dressed in hard black billy hat, and wears it little back on his head, dark blue Guernsey, blue cloth tronsors, and light boots. He took train at Spilsby for Peterboro' on 1st instant; stated he was going to Huntingdon or Yarmouth, aud then to London to see his mother. W.— Metropolitan Police, September 10. 2 Stolen from an unfinished building at Teignmouth, Devon, between 4th and 6th instant:— a half rip Saw, 2 Hand Saws, a Trying Plane, a Rabbet Plane, a Plough, a spirit Level, and a tool Bag, the property of James Peedner, whose name is stamped on them. By a man who was seen at the Dawlish Railway Station about G a. m. on the 6th instant, and is supposed to have gone to Exeter by the first train ; he is about 5 feet 6 inches high, from 18 to 23 years of age, dark complexion, and no beard, whiskers or moustache ; dusaed in a dark suit of clothes, black cloth cap with peak, and small light boots with six rows of sprigs in the bottoms, two each side and two in the centre. Information to Mr. Supt. Moore, E Division, Devon Constabulary, Chudleigh, or'Mo Sergeant Bright, Police Station, Teignmouth.— Bow- st., September 10. Wanted at Weymouth, for stealing from the ' Fisherman's Arms Inn,' High- street, a pair of buff- coloured ribbed oloth Trousers, nietitlrM in the scats . with two small pieces " bf a different material:— WILLIAM BOWS, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 iucles high, light brown hair cut short, stout build, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in brown coat, light trousers, and straw hat. Has been a soldier. He travels tho country, hawking with ferns, watercresses, & c. He left Weymouth on the morning of 4th instant, and frequents low lodging- houses. Information to Mr. Supt. Vickery, Police Offi : e, Weymouth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, Sept. 10. Description of JOHN KEBB, charged with stealing a dark brown suit of Clothes, straight back, single- breasted coat, brown buttons, a small hole on tho left fore corner, burnt with a pipe, Mingle- breasled Vest, fly front Trousers ; three silver Studs ; six Photos, all men, one a soldier with a little dog, and two Letters, addressed ' John Thurley' in pocket: -- he is 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, blue eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, soar on right side of chin, and native of Stroud, Gloucestershire ; supposed dressed in stolen articles, with military shirt, boots, and socks, and a deserter from ; the | 3!) thaBrigade Depot, He is JOHN THOMAS KIBBLE, of Stroud, discharged from Chatham Ptison, 25th October, 1879, on ticket of leave, whose sentence doc3 not expire until the 8th of January, I8S1; when last seen was making his way across country for Bridport or Plymouth, trying to |<! 1 or exchange the stolen clothes; marks on person, scar right side of face and jaw, scar on chin, lost one bottom tooth, ink dots on both arms. Despription of HERBERT ALLEN ELTON, surveyors assistant, wauted under a warrant at Bolton, for obtaining 4s., on 2nd instant, by producing a letter falsely purporting to have been written by a gentleman at Southport, where he said he had obtained employment, which is false, and wanted means to carry him there :— he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet C or 7 inches high, slender made, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, parted in the middle, slight whiskers, and daik brown moustache ; dressed in dark suit, Bilk hat, and scaif with pin, shield pattern. Shirt ; 1 black French merino Capo; 2 black silk Jackets ; several Handkerchiefs j 3 dinuei Napkins; 1 flannel Petticoat; I flannel Undershirt; 1 pair of men's drawers; and 4s. iu Money. By JOHN CAMPBELL, a tramping shoemaker, about 40 years of age, dark complexion, dark b. ishy whiskers and moustache; supposed dressed in the stolen coat. He is well known at Macclesfield, Stockport, Knutsford, and Bollington, in Cheshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Williamson, County Constabulary, Town Hall, Runcorn, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 8.
