POLICE GAZETTE, CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanrts of an aggravated nature, and agaitut Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those Mho are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Tht Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may had to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minut* Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in • reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made- and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London,"~ W. C. *„* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of tbo Offence charged, and ( m attested copy thereof, together with Ihe advertisement, forwardod to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Karnes and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. < 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, Bigned by the persons forwarding nbem. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the propeity, without the apprehension of the offender. By a man who slept in the house one night, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, no whiskers, light complexion ; dressed in dark grey suit. Stolen from the person at Gravesend, on 30th ultimo, during the regatta:— a silver Geneva Watch ; a silver Geneva Watch, No. 69445 ; a silver lever double Hunter, with gold fine link Albert Chain, with Locket, engraved ' J. M. of W. B., died Sept. 11th, 1877' attached ; a double- case silver Geneva Watch, with gold Albert Chain, and imitation half Spade Guinea attached. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Stolen at Warrington, at 8 p. m. on 6th instant:—,£ 73 103. in gold, silver, anel copper Monies ; a gold lever Watch, No. 81744, value « £ 19 ; a plated, albert Guard, curb pattern ; a cheque Book ; a bank Book ; 2 leather cash Bags ; and a leather Purse with steel clasp. Information to Chief Con- stable Hunt, Warrington.— Bow- street, September 8. FORGERY. THOMAS E. PAGE, who absconded from Eastbourne, on 3rd instant, charged with forgery, and advertised in the Police Gazette of 6th instant, has been apprehended London.— Bow- street, September 8. Description of a man ( supposed an American), charged • with uttering in Manchester, on 26th, and in London on 30th ultimo, forged fifty dollar American Greenbacks 40 years of age,' 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, black beard ; d? essed in dark coat, light trousers, soft billycock hat, patent leather bqots. It is desirable that the police should as far as practicable, caution money changers, pawnbrokers, & c., who deal in foreign notes, as there is reason to believe that this man will offer similar forged Notes, should he do so, he is to be detained and immediate information sent to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, September 6. Wanted at Glasgow, on a Sheriffs warrant, charged with having fraudulently obtained £ 400, by means of a forged Bill: — WILLIAM LIVINGSTON, a Commission agent, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, ordinary make, dark red hair, whiskers and moustache, had a peculiar rising of one side of his lip when speaking; dressed in dark tweed suit, and round felt hat; absconded on 27th ultimo. Informati » n to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow.— Bow- st., September 6. Stolen, by means of burglary, at Albury, during the night of 5th instant:— a small silver Sugar Basin and Spoon, crest— a boar's head ; also two children's Cases, each contain- ing a silver Spoon and Pork ; three silver Spoons and silver Sugar Tongs ; and one gold and one silver Pencil. Informa- tion to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- street, September 8. • Stolen, by means of burglary, at Abiuger Hall, on the night of 5th instant:— a small silver oval Case, containing silver Scissors aud Thimble ; an elephant's tooth Snuff Box, bound with gold ; a black ditto, with gold rim, and large cameo on it. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, September 8. During the night of 31st ultimo, an ironmonger's shop at Dorking, was broken into and entered, aud stolen therefrom : — a double- barrelled breech- loading Gun, central fire, lever action ; eight dozen electro- plated table Spoons, marked ' J. D. S.' ; five dozen Screwdrivers, maker Hill ; four dozen Chisels, with handles, and five dozen without handles, makers Ward and Payne ; twelve Spirit Levels; a number of Gimlets and Bradawls ; two flag Baskets ; and a dark water- proof Coat, with plaid lining. By a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, full face, low forehead, burn mark under left eye, and light moustache ; dressed in a blue serge jacket, black and white check trousers, and straw hat, with blue ribbon around ; was traced from Dorking to Moorgate Street Station, of the underground railway. £ S reward will be paid by Mr. William Rossiter, Dorking, for the apprehension and conviction of the offender. Stolen by means of burglary, from the Ash, Overcliff, Gravesend, on the night of 2nd instant :— a round gold Brooch, set with garnets; a pair of long Ear- rings, also a Locket and Ring to match brooch and ear- rings; a pair of turquoise double Ear- rings, diamond in centre; a pair of gold long drop Ear- rings, a pair of ditto, set with garnets; 2 old Geneva Watches, out of repair, the two worth about 30s.; a gold oblong Brooch, violet stones in centre, hasp broken off; and a silver plated Vinegarette, with small gold Chain attached; and £ 25 in Gold. Information to Chief Coppers. Information to the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, to Mr. Supt. Peerless, Uckfield, to Sergeant Avery, Court House, Mark Cross, or at any Police Station in East Sussex. — Bow- s reet, September 6. Charged on warrant with housebreaking: — JAMES STEEL, 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, slight fair moustache, stoops when walking, and speaks the Yorkshire dialect; frequents race meetings, and may be found in the company of low betting men ; is accom- panied by a young man about 20 years of age. short and stout. Information to the Chief Constable, Central Police Station, Newcastle- upon- Tyne.— Bow- street, September 6. A house at Denbigh, was burglariously entered on the night of 2nd instant, and stolen therein :— a silver lever Watch, almost new, thick glass, maker Joyce, Ruthin ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, nearly new; a pair of white woollen Stockings, newly footed; a Half- crown; a Net 120 yards long, and 7 do small. By 2 men, one about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark liair and complexion, tuft of liair on chin, large nose, dark eyes, oval face, wrist of right hand crippled, of scampish appearance, stone cutter, and native of Denbigh; who wore a black billycock hat, dark chabby jacket, and corduroy trousers, strong lace- up boots much worn ( one of them may wear the stolen boots); 2nd, from 34 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, tuft of sandy hair on chin,[ high square shoulders; wore a white billycock hat, monkey jacket, and moleskin trousers, mill stone dresser, & c., and a native of Llanfairfechan, Carnarvonshire ; both notorious poachers. Information to Mr. Supt. Judge, or Sergeant Vaughan, Denbigh.— Bow- street, September 6. ROBBERY AMD LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on 3rd instant :— a silver lever Watch, No. 35594 ; also a silver lever Watch, No. 1920, maker ' Bennett, Preston,' on works, has ' J. P.' engraved on outer case. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Sept. 8. Stolen from the person at a cattle sale at Worsloy, on 30th ultimo :— a silver lever Watch, No. 9366, maker John Hall and Co., Manchester, open face, and jewelled in four holes, had attached a long heavy gold Albert, curb pattern, with cross bar, and two small Seals, one of which is inscribed with the word ' Caroline' thereon, the other opens at the bottom. Stolen at Derby on the 2nd and 3rd instant, from the person, during the races :— A gold lever Watch, old, No. 23394. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Yalding, Kent, on 30th ultimo :— an old- fashioned verge Watch, No. 1147 ; a pair of gold drop Ear Rirgs ; a suit of black cloth Clothes, man's size; a dark mixture Vest, a pair of black cloth Trousers; a grey Vest, partly made ; a black and white plaid woollen Shirt; a grey ditto, with white stripe; a pair of Balmoral Boots, nearly new ; a pair heavy lace- up Shoes, the right heel of each pair is higher than the other ; a Carving Knife and Fork, black handles ; three small Knives and Forks, black handles ; four metal Tea Spoons, a pair of silver Studs, a b! ack jet Brooch, 5s. in Silver, and a quantity of Provisions. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Pebworth, between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 27th ultimo :— an old fashioned gold consular verge Watch, No. 6310, winds up in face, gold face, common Key attached, with a short piece of black ribbon, and four Sovereigns. Information to Mr. Supt. Matthews, Chipping Campden, or to Sergeant Whitman, Long Marston, Gloucestershire. - Bow- street, September 6. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Wadhurst, Sussex, on 3rd instant, between 7 a m. and 1 p. m. :— a ladies small silver Geneva Watch, flowered back, cream coloured dial, and the mainspring broken ; a gold Ring, set with blue and white stones ; 5 old- fashioned silver Teaspoons, initials ' C. C.'; a caddy Spoon ; a pair of sugar Tongs, marked ' C. C.'; a pair of women's elastic- side kid Boots, No. 6 size, with plates on heels; £' i iu Gold ; 4 or 5 shillings in Silver; and a few Remanded until 9th instant, charged with housebreaking: — gives his name ROBERT JONES, born at Llanberis, North Wales, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, sandy moustache, and on chin, shaved cheeks, long visage, blue sunken eyes, blue speck below right temple, scar in • front above left wrist; dressed in black round felt hat, white liuan monkey jacket, - with norroir croaa bar stripes of blue, old grey cloth vest, cord trousers, and boots. States he tramped about Cumberland for 2 years, and left there about 6 months ago. His photo, on application to the Governor o£ H. M. Prison, Carnarvon. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hughe, Towyn, or to G. Griffiths, Police Station, Penrhyndendraeth, Merionethshire.— Bow- st., September 3. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of 14th ultimo, at Leytonstone :— a dark bay mare Pony, 13 hands high, hog mane, tail cut short, star on forehead, black points, off hind hoof cracked, and in good condition. Stoleu about 4 pm. 3rd instant, from outside No. 3 Leicester place, Leicester- street : - a dun colour Pony, 13 hands high, silver main and tail, cut short; brown leather Harness, brass mounting; and a two wheel Trap, painted black, picked out white. Information to the Director, C. I D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, September 8. Stolen from a field at Close House, near Bishop Auck-~* land, ou the morning of 26thultimo :— a chestnut horse Pony about 8 years old, 12 hands high, white face, one wall- eye ( supposed right), slit in one ear ( supposed right), cropped mane, and in fair condition, value £ 6. A man was seen taking the pony from the field at 2 a. m., on the above date, of whom no description can be given. Information to Mr' Supt. Banks, Bishop Auckland, Durham.— Bow- street, Sept. 6. Charged under warrant with stealing an Ass ( since recovered) from Cidegill, Llanfairnantgwyn, Pembrokeshire • - JOHN BURKE, alias BRIAN CASEY, 41 years of age' 5 feet 11 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark hair, tuft of whiskers on chin, stout figure, lost second joint two first right fingers; a tramping tinker. Information at Chief Constable's Office, Haverfordwest, or to Mr. Supt. Thomas Fishguard, Pembrokeshire.— Bow- street, September 3. In custody at Worcester, on suspicion of having stolen a very dark chestnut ( uearly brown) Mare, 6 years old 14 hands high, with long tail, hollow jback, large belly, and ' J. B.' marked on near fore hoof; aud a roan Foal, with white mark on nose :— a man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, black hair, small black whiskers, florid com- plexion, oval face, three burn marks on right arm, four blue marks on left, blue spot on right ear, do. on forehead. On him was found a police [ supervision paper in the name of THOMAS HAWKER, issued by the Governor of H. M. Prison, Gloucester, supervision commencing January 1 188o' and ending December 31, 1881. Information to Detective Phillips, City Policc, Worcester.— Bow- street, September 1. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of HERBERT ALLEN ELTON, surveyors assistant, wanted under a warrant at Bolton, for obtaining 4s., on 2nd instant, by producing a letter falsely purporting to have been written by a gentleman at Southport, where he said he had obtained employment, which is false, aud wanted means to carry him there :— he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slender made, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, parted iu the middle, slight whiskers, and daik browu moustache; dressed in dark suit, silk hat, and scaif with pin, shield pattern. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire,— Bow- street, September 3. f 2 September 8 Stolen at Southboro', Tonbridge, on 31st ultimo :— 1 jet Albert; 1 pair of gilt Ear- drops, shape of'a wheat ear; 2 electro plated tea Spoons ; 1 small metal Fork ; 1 dessert Spoon ; 1 carving Knife and Fork ; 6 large white handle Knives ; 12 small do.; 3 small do., with one rivet; 2 calico Sheets; 1 twill do. ; 1 new Night Dress ; 1 Night Dress; 1 do. Shirt; 1 black French merino Cape; 2 black silk Jackets ; several Handkerchiefs; 3 dinnei Napkins; 1 flannel Petticoat; 1 flannel Undershirt; 1 pair of men's drawers; and 4s. in Money. By HENRY RADCLIFFE, 43 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, strong built, sunburnt face, light brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, nearly bald on top of head, except a tuft on top of forehead ; dressed in old dirty grey coat and trousers, dark vest, and cap with peak, fitting close to head, and coloured shirt; is a smith, and works m foundries, has also been to sea, and carried a brown American cloth bag, and a large bundle in a handkerchief. And BETSY RADCLIFFE, his wife, 37 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, good looking, brown hair; dressed in serge or brown dress, light drab jacket, button boots, sun bonnet or pompadour hat, blue and white. The mar is of rough dirty appearance, and the woman very clean and respectable appearance. Information to Mr. Supt. Barnes, Police Court, Tonbridge, Kent, who holds a warrant for their apprehension. — Bow- street, September 8. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Runcorn, on 29th ult.:— a dark tweed frock Coat, man's size, has two pockets in skirts, two inside breast, and one outside breast. By JOHN CAMPBELL, a tramping shoemaker, about 40 years of age, dark complexion, dark bashy whiskers and moustache; supposed dressed in the stolen coat. He is well known at Macclesfield, Stockport, Knutsford, and Bollington, in Cheshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Williamson, County Constabulary, Town Hall, Runcorn, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.—- Bow- street, September 8. Wanten on a warrant, charged with stealing £ 4 10s. in Postage Stamps, from the Post Office, Windsor, at which place he was employed as messenger :— WALTER THOMAS JAMES, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, right eye- lid drops, thick lips, large mouth, no whiskers or moustache ; he absconded on 2ud inst., he was dressed in dark grey coat and trousers, deerstalker hat. Will probably endeavour to enlist, in the Royal Engineers, under an assumed name. Information to Air. Supt. Hayes, Police Office, Windsor, Berkshire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 8. JOHN PALMER, jun. advertised in the Police Gazette of 9th1, ultimo, charged with embezzlement, at Harleston, Norfolk, on 28th July last, is not to be apprehended.— Bow- st., September 8. Description of F. C. LAWSON, a cabinet maker, who absconded from Warrington, on 6th instant, stealing a gold albert Guard, curb pattern, with gold Locket attached; a gold pencil Case ; a man's suit of black broad cloth Clothes ; a pair of groy tweed Trousers and Vest to match :— 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, short- sighted, wears spectacles, small moustache and whiskers, weak husky voice. He obtains lodgii gs on false represen- tations, and presently leaves, taking all he can lay his hands upon. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Information to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington— Bow- street, Sept. 8. Description of JOHN KEBB, charged with stealing a dark brown suit of Clothes, straight back, single- breasted coat, brown buttons, a small hole on the left fore corner, burnt with a pipe, single- breasted Vest, fly front Trousers ; three silver Studs ; six Photos, all men, one a soldier with a little dog, and two Letters, addressed ' John Thurley' in pocket: • — he is 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, blue eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, scar on right side of chin, and native of Stroud, Gloucestershire ; supposed dressed in stolen articles, with military shirt, boots, and socks, and a deserter from the 39th Depot Brigade ; he is supposed to be JOHN THOMAS KIBBLE, discharged from Chatham Prison, 25tli October, 1879. Information to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Station, Guildhall, Dorchester, Dorset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Sept. 6. Stolen on the morning of 3rd instant, from a bedroom at the 1 Duke William' public- house, at Olney, Bucks:— a half Sovereign; 4 gold Studs ; a pair of gold Ear- rings ; 2 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' J. M. F.'; a quantity of old copper Coins ; a pair'of grey cloth Trousers and Vest; a red silk Handker- chief. By a man, who lodged in the house the previous night, ^ g. nd stated he. came from London, about 25 years ef age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and eyes, very slight dark moustache, has a small wen on his forehead ; dressed in black cloth ribbed coat and vest, grey cloth trousers, white shirt and collar, blaok hard hat, and spring- side boots. Ho was traced t>- Railway Station at Turney, on the afternoon of the robbery, where he took train to Kentish Town, stating he wanted to get to Finsbury. He is also wanted for stealing a Watch from a public- house, where he lodged at Northampton. Information to Mr. Supt. Hedley, Fenny Stratford ; Inspector Moore, Newport Pagnell; or to Sergeant Pilson, Olney, * Buckinghamshire.— Bow- street, September 6. Solen between 4' 30 and 5' 15 p. m., on 30th ultimo, from a- watchmaker's shop at Haslingden :— a silver lever Watch, sunk seconds, engine- turned cases, No. 34601, with brass pin Through the bow, and a long snake- pattern gilt Guard attached. By a young man, who went into the shop and asked to look at a pipe iu the window, and sent the girl in chaise of the shop to the back door to fetch her father who had gone out; he wore a pair of black ribbed trousers aud billycock hat. It was offered for pledge, and stopped by Mr. Haslam, pawnbroker, Blackburn, on 30th ultimo by 2 men, one gave the name of JOHN RHODES, Helen- street, Blackburn, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and moustache,' no whiskers; dressed iu black cloth cap, pink aud white plaid scarf tied in a sailor's knot, dark blue cloth double- breasted vest, black cloth trousers, striped cotton shirt, and clogs. The other gave the name of JONATHAN WALSH, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion; dressed in black cloth- cap, brown coat which has been repaired on right arm with lighter cloth, dark cloth double- breasted vest, dark trousers, and clogs. Information at the County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, September 6. Absconded on - 10th ultimo, from Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire, charged on a warrant with stealing a Bicycle, recovered ;— a man known- as JOSEPH DEQUIN, alias- DYKES, native of Manchester, where he is likely to go, about 29 years of age, about 5. feet 8 or 9 inches high, brown eyes, black hair turning grey, thin dark whiskers and mous- tache, long thin pale face ; dressed in small hard jim crow hat, brim turned up at ' sides, a long black cloth coat, light vest, brown plaid cloth trousers, old shoes, clumsly repaired, paper front, with corner of collar turned down, black necktie, walks with a fancy stick, shibby genteel appearance, sometimes cuts peoples hair at public houses, at others pretends to practice phrenology in public houses, and has been working with boatmen, about the Cefn, Ruabon, Wrexham, & c., can write short hand, was seen in Liverpool, and was in Holyhead, on 22nd instant, where he rquested a box to be sent addressed ' to be left at the Railway Station, Holyhead, till called for'. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, or to John Rogers, Police Station, Llandysilio, Llnymynech, R. S. O. who holds the warrant for his apprehension.-* 1 Bow- st., September 3. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS.
