Notice*— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in refe rence to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and tlio Name is given, it is indispensably nccessary that an information should bo mailo and sworn to boforo a Magistrate, of the Offenco charged, and an attostod copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise tho insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and •£ Abscntoes and Deserters from tho Militia, should bo forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to tho Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) Tho conditions on whioh it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed pr accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the propeity, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, ow} ng either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Stolen from the dwelling- house on 3rd instant:— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, a gold Chain, twisted link pattern, oval Locket, attached; a gold scarf Pin, forget- me- not; and 25s. in Money. By a man who slept in the house one night, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, no whiskers, light complexion ; dressed in dark grey suit. Stolen from the person at Gravesend, on 30th ultimo, during the regattaa silver Geneva Watch ; a silver Geneva Watch, No. 69445 ; a silver lever double Hunter, with gold tine link Albert Chain, with Locket, engraved J. M. of W. B., died Sept. 11th, 1877' attached ; a double- case silver Geneva Watch, with gold Albert Chain, and imitation half Spade Guinea attached. Stolen from the person at Scarborough Race Course, on 28th ultimo :— a silver lever Watch, No. 82430, cer. tre seconds, glass cracked, gold Albert Guard attached, curb pattern, with endant, one side white the other dark. Information to Mr. supt. Spence, North Riding Constabulary, Pickering, or to Inspector Dove, County Police Office, Falsgrave, Scarboro', Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 1. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY*. Description of a man ( supposed an American), charged • with uttering in Manchester, on 26 th, and in London on 30th ultimo, forged fifty dollar American Greenbacks :— 40 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, black beard ; Pressed in dark coat, light trousers, soft billycock hat, patent leather boots. It is desirable that the police should as far as practicable, caution money changers, pawnbrokers, & c., who deal in foreign notes, as there is reason to believe that this man will offer similar forged Notes, should he do so, he is to be detained and immediate information sent to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Polio, September 6. Wanted at Glasgow, on a Sheriffs warrant, charged with having fraudulently obtained £ 400, by means of a forged Bill: — WILLIAM LIVINGSTON, a Commission agent, about 27 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 0 inches high, ordinary make, dark red hair, whiskers and moustache, had a peculiar rising of one side of his lip when speaking ; dressed in dark tweed suit, and round felt hat; absconded on 27th ultimo. Informatien to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow.— Bow- st., September 6. Absconded from Eastbourre, Sussex, oa 3rd instant, charged on warrant with forging and uttering a Cheque for £ 300, on 6th ultimo^ aUo with forging and uttering a Cheque for £ 200, on 2nd instant, with intent to defraud :— THOMAS E. PAGE, a butcher, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fre- ih complexion ( rather florid), has a good set of teeth, and speaks through his teeth, blue eyes, light brown • hair, smooth face, medium figure, smart appearance, walks erect, weight about 9 stones, has trained for gentlemen's hunting races; generally wears a boulder crowned felt hat, and dresses respectably, almost invariably having a flower in his coat, may he wearing a gold diamond ring, is fond of horse raciDg and gay company ; is likely to be found at race meetings, or in company of women at theatres or music halls Supposed to have in liiB possession about £ 300 in Cash and Notes ; took the 6' 7 p. m. train from Lewes to London Bridge, on 3rd instant ; may probably endeavour to emigrate. In formation to Mr. Supt. Newnham, East Sussex Constabulary. Eastbourne, who holds the warrants for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 6. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at a cattle sale at Worsley, on 30th ultimo :— a silver lever Watch, No. 9360", maker John Hall and Co., Manchester, open face, and jewelled in four holes, had attached a long heavy gold Albert, curb pattern, • with cross bar, and two small Seals, one of which is inscribed. with the word ' Caroline' thereon, the other opens at the bottom. Information to Mr. Supt Bent, County Constabu Jary Office, Old Traflord, near Manchester.— Bovi- st., Sept. C. Remanded until 9th instant, charged with housebreaking : — gives his name ROBERT JONES, born at Llanberis, North Waljji, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, sandy moustache, and on chin, shaved cheeks, long visage, blue sunken eyes, blue speck below right temple, scar iu front above left wrist; dressed in black round felt hat, white linen monkey jacket, with narrow cross bar stripes of blue, old grey cloth vest, cord trousers, and boots. States he tramped about Cumberland for 2 years, and left there about 6 months ago. His photo, on application to the Governor of H. M. Prison, Carnarvon. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hughe, Towyn, or to G. Griffiths, Police Station Penrliyndendraeth, Merionethshire.— Bow- sC., September 3. ' BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Yalding, Kent, on 30th ultimo :— an old- fashioned verge Watch, No. 1147 ; a pair of gold drop Ear Rings ; a suit of black cloth Clothes, man's size; a dark mixture Vest, a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a grey Vest, partly made ; a black and white plaid woollen Shirt; a grey ditto, with white stripe; a pair of Balmoral Boots, nearly new ; a pair heavy lace- up Shoes, the right heel of each pair is higher than the other ; a Carving Knife and Fork, black handles ; three small Knives and Forks, black handles ; four metal Tea Spoons, a pair of silver Studs, a b'ack jet Brooch, 5s. in Silver, and a quantity of Provisions. Information to Mr. Supt. Hulse, Kent Con- stabulary, West Mailing.— Bow- street, September 6. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Pebworth, between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 27th ultimo :— an old fashioned gold consular verge Watch, No. 6310, winds up in face, gold face, common Key attached, with a short piece of black ribbon, and four Sovereigns. Information to Mr. Supt. Matthews, Chipping Campden, or to Sergeant Whitman, Long Marston, Gloucestershire. - Bore- street, September 6. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Wadhurst, Sussex; on 3rd instant, between 7 a. m. and 1 p. m. :— a ladies small silver Geneva Watch, flowered back, cream coloured dial, and the mainspring broken ; a gold King, set with bine and white stones ; 5 old- fashioned silver Teaspoons, initials ' C. C.'; a caddy Spoon ; a pair of sugar Tongs, marked ' C. C.'; a pair of women's elastic- side kid Boots, No. 6 size, with plates on heels; £ 3 in Gold ; 4 or 5 shillings in Silver; and a few Coppers. Information to the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, to Mr. Supt. Peerless, Uckfield, to Sergeant Avery, Court House, Mark Cross, or at any Police Station in East Sussex. — Bow- s reet, September 6. Charged on warrant with housebreaking; — JAMES STEEL, 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, slight fair moustache, stoops when walking, and speaks the Yorkshire dialect; frequents race meetings, and may be found in the company of low betting men ; is accom- panied by a young man about 20 years of age, short and stout. Information to the Chief Constable, Central Police Station, Newcastle upon- Tyne.— Bow- street, September 6. A house at Denbigh, was burglariously entered on the night of 2nd instant, and stolen therein :— a silver lever Watch, almost new, thick glass, maker Joyce, Ruthin ; a pair of elastic- side Boot", nearly new; a pair of white woollen Stockings, newly footed ; a Half- crown; a Net 120 yards long, and 7 do small. By 2 men, one about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and complexion, tuft of hair on chin, large nose, dark eyes, oval face, wrist of right hand crippled, of scampish appearance, stone cutter, and native of Denbigh ; who wore a black billycock hat, dark shabby jacket, and corduroy trousers, strong lace- up boots much worn ( one of them may wear the stolen boots) ; 2nd, from 34 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, tuft of sandy hair on chin,[ high square shoulders; wore a white billycock hat, monkey jacket, and moleskin trousers, mill stone dresser, & c., and a native of Llanfairfeclian, Carnarvonshire ; both notorious poachers. Information to Mr. Supt. Judge, or Sergeant Vaughan, Denbigh.— B: w street, September 6. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Close House, near Bishop Auck- land, on the morning of 26th ultimo :— a chestnut horse Pony, about 8 years old, 12 hands high, white face, one wall- eye ( supposed right), slit in one ear ( supposed right), cropped mane, and in fair condition, value £ 6. A man w^ s seen taking the pony from the field at 2 a. m., on the above date, of whom no description can be given. Information to Mr. Supt Banks, Bishop Auckland, Durham.— Bow- street, Sept. 6 Charged under warrant with stealing an Ass ( since recovered) from Cidegill, Llanfairnantgwyn, Pembrokeshire : JOHN BURKE, alias BRIAN CASEY, 41 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark hair, tuft of whiskers on chin, stout figure, lost second joint two first right fingers; a tramping tinker. Information at Chief Constable's Office, Haverfordwest, or to Mr. Supt. Thomas, Fishguard, Pembrokeshire.— Bow- street, September 3. In custody at Worcester, on suspicion of having stolen a very dark chestnut ( nearly brown) Mare, 6 years old, 14 hand." high, with long tail, hollow jbaclarge belly, and J. ii' on near fore licofsj au< J Vv Foal, with white mark on nose :— a man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, black hair, small black whiskers, florid com- plexion, oval face, three burn marks on right arm, four blue marks on left, blue spot on right ear, do. on forehead. On him was found a police [ supervision paper in the name of THOMAS HAWKER,' issued by the Governor of H. M. Prison, Gloucester, supervision commencing January 1, 1880, and ending December 31, 1881. Information to Detective Phillips, City Policc, Worcester.— Bow- street, September 1. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of JOHN KEBB, charged with stealing a dark brown suit of Clothes, straight back, single- breasted coat, brown buttons, a small hole on the left fore corner, burnt with a pipe, single- breasted Yest, fly front Trousers ; three silver Studs; six Photos, all men, one a soldier with a little dog, and two Letters, addressed ' John Thurley ' in pocket : -- lie is 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, blue eye3, brown hair, fresh complexion, scar on right side of chin, and native of Stroud, Gloucestershire ; supposed dressed in stolen articles, with military shirt, boots, and socks, and a deserter from the 39th Depot Brigade ; he is supposed to be JOHN THOMAS KIBBLE, discharged from Chatham Prison, 25th October, 1879. Information to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Station, Guildhall, Dorchester, Dorset, who holds a warrant for, his apprehension.— Bow- street, Sept. 6. Stolen on the morning of 3rd instant, from a bedroom at the • Duke William ' public- house, at Olney, Bucks :— a half Sovereign; 4 gold Studs ; a pair of gold Ear- rings ; 2 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' J. M. F.'; a quantity of old copper Coins ; a pair of grey cloth Trousers and Yest; a red silk Handker- chief. By a man, who lodged in the house the previous night, and stated he came fiom London, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and eyes, very slight dark moustache, has a small wen on his forehead ; dressed in black cloth ribbed ooat and vest, grey cloth trousers, white shirt and collar, black hard hat, and spring- side boots. He was traced to Railway Station at Turney, on the afternoon of the robbery, where he took train to Kentish Town, stating he wanted to get to Finsbury. He is also wanted for stealing a Watch from a publichouse, where he lodged at Northampton. Information to Mr. Supt. Hedley, Fenny Stratford ; Inspector Moore, Newport Pagnell; or to Sergeant Pilson, Olney, Buckinghamshire.— Bow- street, September C. Solen between 4' 30 and 515 p. m., on 30tli ultimo, from a watchmaker's shop at Haslingden :— a silver lever Watch, sunk seconds, engine- turned cases, No. 34601, with brass pin through the bow, and a long snake- pattern gilt Guard attached. By a young man, who went into the shop and asked to look at a pipe in the window, and sent the girl in chajge of the shop to the back door to fetch her father who had gone out; he wore a pair of black ribbed trousers and billycock hat. It was offered for pledge, and stopped by Mr. Haslam, pawnbroker, Blackburn, on 30tli ultimo by 2 men, one gave the name of JOHN RHODES, Helen- street, Blackburn, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in black cloth cap, pink and white plaid scarf tied in a sailor's knot, dark blue cloth double- breasted vest, black cloth trousers, striped cotton shirt, and clogs. The other gave the name of JONATHAN WALSH, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion ; dressed in black cloth cap, brown coat which has been repaired on right arm with lighter cloth, dark cloth double- breasted vest, dark 4 POLICE GAZETTE. September 10 trousers, and clogs. Information at the County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, September C. Absconded on 16th ultimo, from Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire, charged on a warrant with stealing a Bicycle, recovered a man known as JOSEPH DEQUIN, alias DYKES, native of Manchester, where he islikely to go, about 29 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, brown eyes, black hair turning grey, thin dark whiskers and mous- tache, long thin pale face ; dressed in small hard jim crow hat, brim turned up at sides, a long blaek cloth coat, light vest, brown plaid cloth trousers, old shoes, clumsly repaired, paper front, with corner of collar turned down, black necktie, walks with a fancy Btick, shabby genteel appearance, sometimes cuts peoples hair at public houses, at others pretends to practice phrenology in public houses, and has been working with boatmen, about the Cefn, Ruabon, " Wrexham, & c., can write short hand, was seen in Liverpool, and was in Holyhead, on 22nd iustaiif, where he rquested a box to be sent addressed ' to bo left at tho Railway Station, Holyhead, till called for'. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, or to John Rogers, Police Station, Llandysilio, Llnymynech, R. S. O. who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- it., September 3. Stolon from a van at Brownlands, Kirkpatrick Juxta, about 12 unon, 27th ultimo :— a man's brown grey Shooting Coat, pockets in skirts, one inside and one outside left breast, ticket do. on right side, brown composition buttons, two or three ou each sleeve, lined in body with dark winsey, sleeves with white cotton, ' Irvine Bell and Sons' on tab at neck, nearly new ; a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, plain soles, row of nails round outside of heels, Hearly new ; a pair of man's Shetland grey Socks, worn. Supposed L y a man, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender make, reddish hair an- l whiskers, and walks lame ; dressed in long dark coat and cap, and likely to be wearing the stolen pro- perty. Information to the Chief Constable, County Buildings, Dumfries.— Bow- street, September 1. Stolen on 28th July, from off a hedge at Tynehas, Darowen :— a pair of nearly new blue woollen Stockings, man's size, white tons, red strip in centre of white, knitted in large ribs. A tramp is suspected, between 30 and 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high ; dressed in old dark clothes, cap, and very old pair of boots ; turns his feet out when walking. Information to Chief Constable Danily, Newtown, or P. C. Humphreys, Cemmes, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, September 1. Description of a man who gave the name of JOHN JACKSON, watch and clock cleaner, wanted on warrant for larceny as bailee, at Knottingley :— about 52 years of age, 6 feet 10 or 11 inches high, sallow complexion, light brown hair, turning grey, tuft of hair on chin, and slender built; dressed in black cloth coat and vest, light brown trousers, dark blue overcoat, billycock hat, and lace- up boots ; was B » ea on 16th July, gottiug out of the 5 p. m. train from Leeds at Ardsley Station. Information to Mr. Supt. Whincup, West Riding Constabulary, Pontefract.— Bow- street, Sept. 1. Charged with stealing a number of " Watches :— MORRIS CLYNES, or KLINES, 20 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, medium build, black curly hair, full facfr; dressed in black worsted suit; black billycock hat ; is a tailor by trade, and a German by birth, but speaks English well. Information to Central Police Office, Leeds.— Bow- street, September 1. Stolen on 30tTt ultimo, from George Gill, At Staithes:— a blue email ribbed cloth Coat, with black velvet collar, 2 pockets outside hips, 1 inside and 1 outside breast, has been repaired on oue sleeve, partly worn. Supposed by a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, supposed brown or sandy whiskers; dressed in stolen coat, moleskin trousers, and lace- up boot?. Information to Mr. Supt. Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 1. Description of JOHN WILSON, alias BENJAMIN TUPONAN, remauded until 6th instant, at Saint Asaph, on a charge of stealing a Shirt:— he is about 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 J inches high, ruddy complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, proportionate build, round face, scar on chest, scar ou right temple, cut on the back of the second finger of the loft hand ; dressed in a hard black felt hat, narrow brim, black tweed coat, brown striped tweed vest and trousers, and lace- up boots; states he is a nativo of Rotherham, that he 3 weeks since left his wife and four children at Manchester, he appears to know all parts of England, has been travelling the country sharpening saws; was on 29th June, at Bangor, Carnarvonshire, sentenced to 7 days h. 1., for stealing a Coat. Information to Mr. Supt. Hughes, Police Office, Holywell, Flintshire.— Bene- street, September 1. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Absconded, charged with fraud :— ALFRED MICHAEL JACOBS, alias BEHEA, 38 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, datk complexion, hair, whiskers ( sliaved under chin) and. moustacho black, sliru build, sharp nose, Jewish appear- ance ; dressed in dark clothes, high black hat; lately carried cn busiaess at 72, Moorgate Chambers, Finsbury Pavement, as a merchant. Known at Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to tho Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, Sept. 6. Obtained at Maidstone, by false pretences, on 31st ult. : — a black mare Pony, 12$ hands high, in fair condition, mark on tho near fore leg caused by the tip of shaft; and a Cart painted dark greeii, picked out with light green, splash board iu frout; silver- plated Httrneas, nearly new. By a man, jibout 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high,. dark com- plexion, no whiskers, slight moustache ; dressed in dark coat, dark giey trousers and vest, and black rouud felt hat. Information to the Head Constable, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- street, September 3. Description of a mau who gives his name as R. H. HASTINGS, charged ou a warrant with having, on 15tli July last, at Hay, Breconshire, obtained £ 8 Is. 8d. by means of false preteuces, by giving a Cheque on the London and Pro- vincial Bank, Limited, Newport Monmouth Branch, purporting to be signed by Charles R. Groves :— ho is of respectable appearance, from 55 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, grey hair, whiokers, and moustucho ( whiskers round chin) intermixed with dark hair, leans slightly forward when walking, and carries a slick ; dressed iu a light suit of grey clothes, new, and dark felt hat. Mo follows, no occupation, and appears to be a gentloman of independent means. He stayed in this town about (> weeks at an ordinary public- house, and went away about 21st ultimo, and took train in the direction of Hereford. He appeal s to be well acquainted with all the towns iu North and South Wales, and C » B speak Welsh. Information to Mr. Supt. Evans, Cjjjjpfiowell, or to P. S. Jones, Hay, Breconshire.— Bow- street, September 1. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Remanded at Exeter, till 13th instant, charged with fraud :— ROBERT CRICKELTON, states he was a band sergeant in 6l3t Regiment-^ ao# was discharged with pension in 1868, native of Brook- street, High Holborn, London, a pianoforte tuner and repairer by trade, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, black hair, turning grey, black whiskers, recently cut off, black moustache, sallow com- plexion, grey eyes, mole on right arm above elbow, and is ruptured ; dressed in black cloth coat and ve3t, mixture cloth trousers, hard bowler hat, and slippers ; of trampish appear- ance.
