Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to tho POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is gieen, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, cf the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Ae no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Offiee Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of tbe reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Description of GEORGE SADLER, late of Shurding- ton, near Cheltenham, charged with forgery :— about ( 55 yrs. of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, small whiskers down sides of face, thin Roman nose, and has the app arai. ee of a respectable farmer. Infor- mation to the Head Constable, City Police Office, Worcester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street. August 11. Charged on warrant with forgery and fraud, in Glasgow, tn March and April last:— CHARLES QUEISSER, or HOFFMANN, a German, about 10 years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, sallow complexion, reddish brown hair, small whiskers and moustache, longish round face, large ears, scar behind left ear on neck, cast iu one of his eyes, stout short made, speaks with Glasgow Scotch accent; may be dressed in a blue serge suit. Had been for sometime employed as a clerk, by a firm of merchants, and having fraudulently obtained two Cheques, forged the signatures of the firm, and obtained the money. He absconded in May last, and went to Germany, it has been ascertained that he returned this week, and is supposed to have gone to Manchester, or some other English town. In- formation to W. A. Brown, Esq., Advocate Procurator Fiscal of Lanarkshire, or to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow.— Bow- street, August 11. of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair, small dark whiskers aud moustache, thin features, sallow complexion, looks haggard, is rather deaf, walks upright having belonged to the Oxford Militia, low dirty appearance; dressed in old dirty brown cloth coat, supposed cord trousers, large white wrap round his neck, and round hard felt hat. The other 20 years of age, 5 feet 8J inches high, dark complexion and hair, small dark whiskers and moustache, high cheek bones, has a gipsy appearance, walks erect, and belongs to tbe Oxford Militia ; dressed in a white slop, light trousers, and cloth cap with peak. Are supposed to be gone harvesting in Buckingham- shire or adjoining counties. Information to Mr. Supt. Hedger, Berks Constabulary, Abingdon.— Bow- street, August 16. Further information respecting the house breaking at Ryarsh, Kent, advertized in Police Gazette ef 30th July :— the number of the £ 20 Bank of England Note is 51841, dated 22 | 1 | 80.— Bow- street. August 16 The following articles being a portion of the property stolen by means of burglary on the night of 19th ultimo, and which appeared in the Police Gazette of 4th instant, have been discovered :— a Life Policy £ 2,000,' London Life Asso- ciation, 81, King William Street, London, No. 16093, dated 15th July, 1870'; a ditto, £ 2,00'' West of England, No. 29958, dated 2nd Mrrch, 1870.' The Life Policy still miss- ing, £ 1400, ' London Life Association, No. 20433, dated 31st March, 1878,' should have been dated ' May' instead of March. Information to the Supt., Detective Office, Exeter, Devonshire.— Bow- street, AuqvM 16. Between 11 p. m. llth and 6' 45 a. m„ on 12th ins., the resi- dence of Colonel Thos. Hunter, of Bainfield, Berks, was entered and stolen :— 3 silver- gilt chased small Saucers, one with a ship, one with a man and hound, and one with flower; 4 silver- gilt Salt Cellars with small coins let in bottom ; 2 antique silver Salt Cellars with gold coins sunk in ; a Queeo Anne's 5- Shilling Piece; 4 old silver Coins; 2 military Medals— one with 2 clasps, and one with ' Candahar, 1842, with name of some sepoy, ' 45th Bengal N. I ,' on rim of Medal; an Indian filigree silver Card Case; a new silk Umbrella with waterproof cover, ' T. 4 . H.' stamped on handle; a black Cane with double hotse- shoe in silver, 8 inches from tip ; a piece of old Church Plate, usually called ' Pyx,' fitted with watch works. Supposed by two men :— first about 50 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, stout figure ; dressed in a greasy high silk hat, long black coat, black trousers, and worn out at bottom ; second, about 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, brown com- plexion and haii, with light whiskers and moustache, medium figure ; dressed in white billy hat, and a brown tweed suit. Information to Mr. Supt. Borlan, Berks Constabulary, Wok- ingham.— Bow- strcet, August 16. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person, between Market- street, and Belle Vue Gardens, on 12th instant:— a, gent's gold lever Watch, white dial, engine turned cases, No. 10885. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Constabulary Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- st., August 16. Stolen from the person at Bell Vue Gardens, about 9.35 p. m. on 4th instant: a small gold Chain, curb pattern, 15 ins. long, had attached a small gold Locket, shape of a heart in the centre. Also stolen from the person in Hyde- road, Gorton, about 10 p. m. on 4th instant:— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, No. 5516, gold dial, steel hands, and flowered case. Informa- tion at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, August 11. Stolen from the person, at Lewes, on 6th instant:— a gentleman's gold Watch, monogram ' F. E.' on one side, Information at Chief Constable's Office, or Mr. Supt. Osbon Lewes, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 11. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. About 5 a. m. on 8th instant a house at New Hinksey was broken into, and stolen :— lbs. of Beef, 2 lbs. of Sugar, 2 0Z9, of Tea, and 2 ozs. of Coffee. By 2 brothers, one 25 years The Church at Heapey, and St. Peter's Church, Chorley, were entered on the night of Cth instant, and a quantity of property stolen, the whole of which has been recovered, having been disposed of on the morning of 7th instant, by the thief :— who is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, and beard inclining to sandy, and slightly bow legged ; dressed in grey tweed trousers, monkey jacket of same material, with black velvet collar, outside pocket at each side, bound round with braid, black and puce necktie, lace- boots, the right boot slightly torn at the bottom of the lacing, and hard billycock hat. He carried the stolen articles in two black bags, and had a large bunch of keys with him. He answers the description of, and is supposed to be, RICHARD PICKERING, who has been several times convicted of similar offences, and who escaped from H. M. Prison, Preston, on 4th August, 1879. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Beetham, County Police Office, Chorley, Lancashire.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen, by means of burglary, at Encombe House, the property of the Earl of Eldon, on the night of 12lh instant, property to the value of £ 15,000 :— 12 silver Table Spoons, crest— coronet and lion's head. 11 do. Tea Spoons do. do. 1 do. Sugar Basin with 2 handles, do. do. 1 do. do. Tongs do. do. 1 Necklace, single diamonds. 2 diamond Bracelets, with diamond brooch centres, ( not pairs). 1 diamond Brooch, ruby centre, octagon, rather more purple than usual, stone damaged. 1 square diamond Brooch, that had contained a minia- ture. 1 large Sapphire Stone, set in gold Brooch. 1 diamond Tiara, same design as the 2 bracelets above. 3 small diamond Clasps. Silver- gilt Mounting of Flagon, set with precious stones 1 large Seal with ivory handle, carved with satyr's head, above 6 inches long. 1 gold Pencil- case, with stone seal on top. Description of two men suspected of committing the burglary — lst, about 44 or 50 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark whiskers and complexion, medium build ; dressed in long dark coat and trousers, stiff or billycock hat, and carrying a black mackintosh. The 2nd about 35 yrs. of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, dark whiskers, inclined to be sandy, stout build, and full features ; dressed, long dark coat and trousers, high black hat, carrying a dark overcoat, and a walking- stick or umbrella Information to Chief Constable Amyate, Dorset, Dorchester, or to Mr. Supt. Lavender, Wareham, Dorsetshire.— Bow- street, August 16. During the night of 12th instant the Rectory at Willington, near Dartford, was broken and entered and a large pair of silver candle Snuffers stolen therefrom, elaborately embossed, with roses and flowers, there is a spring in the middle to take the wick. Information to Mr. Supt. Fread, Kent Constabulary, Dartford. — Bo w- street, Aug. 16. Stolen, by means of burglary, at Betchworth, between 1215 and 7 am. on 14th instant:— a square carriage Repeater- Clock, with glass all round ; a silver Sugar Sifter, crest— a warrior's head ; a child's Rattle with coral handle aud pearls; and a damask Table Cloth, marked ' T. B. H. 12.1879,' in red cotton. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Consta- bulary, Dorking.— Bow- strest, August 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Iford, in Christ- church, Hants, oa llth instant:— 1 gold open- face, English lever Watch, No. 35255 ; 2 silver Table Spoons, engraved ' Presented to Mr. Robert Hunt, for the best field of turnips, not less than two acres'; 1 pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' J. E. H.'; 2 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' J. E. H.'; 1 gold Locket, marked ' M- A'H.' on the outside; and about £ li in gold and silver. Supposed by two men, one about 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, very dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, rath » r stout figure ; dressed in a dark suit, and silk hat. The other about 43 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, pale complexion, dark round the eyes, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in black cloth suit, and silk hat. . Both men are of Jewish appearance. Also stolen by means of housebreaking, at Bournemouth, on 11th instant :— 1 carriage Clock, 6 inches by 4 inches, glass frame, brass handle ou the top; 1 other Clock, ' mahogany case, 6 inches by 4 inches, round dial; 1 black Bag, letters M. M. W.' on the side ; 1 silver Biscuit Basket, round shape ; 1 silver Pencil Case, plain seal at end ; 1 gold Pencil Case, ilain seal at end, the property of J. W. Williamson, M. A. The 2 men suspected of committing the robbery at Iford same date, are also suspected of committing this robbery. Information to Mr. Supt. Brinson, Hants Constabulary, Ringwood.— Bow- street, August 10. A cottage at Basbury, Hereford, was entered on 12th instant, and a silver hunting Geneva Watch, No. 39233, with long silver Chain attached, stolen therein. Also a cottage at Ledbury, was entered through a window, and a new pair of man's strong nailed Boots stolen therein, on 13rd instant. A man about 26 years of age, dark complexion, no whiskers ; dress, dark coat, and black hard hat; and a woman about the same age ; dress, black jacket and hat, light hair and complexion, hawker of needles, are suspected. Information to Mr. Supt. Blunsdon, Ledbury, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen from Christ Church, Egerton, Turton, between 9 p. m. 9th and lu a. m. 10th ins. :— a black cloth funeral Pall, with black border of a differant material, 3 yards long, and 21 wide ; a piece of Carpet, 8 feet by 4 feet, drab with red spots; a do. do., red and green, far worn ; a do. 7 feet by 4 feet, do., these two are cut to fit the feet of the pews ; a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, patent leather tops, nearly new. Entrance effected by getting on the roof of the heating apparatus, and breaking a stained glass window. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, August 13. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Bolton, between 12- 30 and 4 a. m. on 8th instant ( entrance having been effected by breaking a large pane of plate glass in the drawing- room window) :— three silver Medals, awarded to Mr. Henry Julian, at Rochdale, Chester and Worsley Agricultural Shows for Carriages ; on one side there are figures of cows and sheep, and ou the other ' Henry Julian,' & c. ; a small silver Mustard Spoon ; a pair of silver carved Sugar Tongs, with initials ' A. M. F.'; a Bohemian Glass Mug, about 2£ ins. high, with glass lid bound with pewter metal, and has the figure of a church cut on the glass; one of Gilby's pint Bottles, con- taining Wine; a pair of man's half Wellington Boots, stitched soles, and in good condition ; a pair of man's low- down elastic side Shoes, black buttons down each side, toe- capped, have been soled and heeled, and are part worn ; a pair of woman's strong lace- up Boots, brass eyelets, plain fronts, small patch at the back of one boot, and are half- heeled with gutta percha. £ 1 reward will be paid by the owner for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves aid recovery of the property. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire,— Bow street, August 11. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen at Willenhall on 13th instant:— a light brown Horse, about 15i hands high, aged, has a small sore on the near shoulder, and a small patch of hair off near fore- knee, short mane and tail, four black legs, had a halter tied round its neck. Information to Chief Supt, Longden, Police Office, Bilstou, Staffordshire.— Bow strset, August 16. Stolen from a field near Kidderminster, on the night of 5th instant:— a ram Lamb, Lincoln breed, a punch marked on ears, aud raddle mark on back. Informatiou to Mr. Supt. Wheeler, Police Station, Stourbridge, Worcestershire. — Bow- st., August 16. Stolen at Halesowen, on 4th instant:— a light grey Mare, aged, about 15 hands high, cut tail, and has" a number of 2 POLICE GAZETTE August 16 brown or condition spots about the body. Information to Mr. Supt. Kemp, Halesowen, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen at Chaseley, Rugeley, during the night of 7th instant;— an ewe Lamb, Shropshire breed, pure bred, no mark on it. Also stolen at Bowen Farm, Etching Hill, Rugeley, on the night of 9th instant :— a yearling ewe Sheep, black face, and in good condition, marked on off side, with the letter ' H'. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Inspector Barrett, Town Hall, Rugeley, Staffordshire. — Bow- st., August 13. The Horse reported stolen in the Police Gazette of 11th instant, from Warleigh, has been recovered, and a man named GEORGE NORRIS, is in custody, charged with having stolen the same.— Bow- street, August 13. Stolen during the night cf 5th instant, from a field in Welliugtou- road, Smethwick :— a dark mouse- coloured Mare, aged, 14| hands high, black legs, mane, and tail, scar on left ribs, saddle mark on back, off foreleg slightly bowed, and in very low condition ; a heavy spring Trap, painted dark greex, new spriDg over axle, two pins penetrate each side of body from top to bottom, the name ' James Bartholomew, Smethwick,' painted on side of body ( recovered); also a set of silver mounted Harness, nearly new, with the initials ' D. T.' thereon; 3 horse Rugs, of various colours ; a white Mackintosh, with grey waterproof lining and white buttons ; and a pair of leather Leggings with spring sides. A reward of 10 guineas will be pail for the recovery of the Harness and conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Supt. Description of GEORGE TIDY, charged on a warrant for stealing a black Horse, from Leyton Marshes, advertised in Police Gazette of 23rd April last:— 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion and hair ; dressed in dark isf. xture suit. A horse dealer, frequents country fairs. Infor- mation to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, August 11. Stolen during the night of 8th instant, from Higher Berse Farm, near Wrexham :— a dark brown cart Horse, 3 years old off, 16 hands high, with small white star on forehead. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, August 11. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Wanted on a warrant for embezzlement:— FREDK. BURT, 23 years of age, about 5 feet inches high, full face, dark complexion, and no whiskers; when last seen dressed in dark drab suit, black hard felt hat, and black necktie. Photo can be seen at Waterloo Station. Information to Mr. Supt. Hoskison, London and South Western Railway, S. E. .— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen on 9th instant at Talyweunydd, Festiniog :— a pair of grey tweed Trousers, narrow brown stripes, man size. By a young man, a labourer, who lodged in the house, and le t 10 p. m. on 9th instant, 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, lost one upper front tooth; dressed in black cloth coat, much worn, grey cloth trousers, hard felt hat. Information to Sergeant Vaughan, Four Crosses, Festiniog, Merionethshire.— Bow- st., August 16. Wanted on warrant for embezzlement :— ROBERT TRITTON WHORLOW, late post master of Whitstable, Kent, about 4Cf years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, pale thin face, blue eyes, slight figure, small dark brown whiskers and moustache, dark brown hair ; dressed in brown tweed suit, and black billycock hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Walker, Kent County Constabulary, Canterbury.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen from a sleeping room at the stable3, Goldicote house, near Stratford- on- Avon :— a silver Watch and Chain, | watch No. 3616, lever, white dial second hands and plain, * W. Field' engraved on the inner case, near key hole, ' Goldicote' scratched inside the outer case; chain silver, curb pattern with one loDg link between every three short ones, horse's head at end of chain, with a red stone set in end of neck. Supposed by a vagrant, who called at the stables, begging on 10th instant; dressed in long grey jacket, and moleskin trousers, apparently about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high. Information to Mr. Supt. Hinde, Police Station, Shipton- on- Stour.— Bow- st., August 16. Stolen about 9 a m. on- 10th instant, at Birkdale :— a gold lever Watch, gold face, ' M. F.' inside one of the cases, maker Wainwright, Southport, No. 57665, had attached a long twisted gold Chain, and an oval shaped Locket. By a man about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, light hair, slight moustache, rather slender build ; dressed in brown overcoat, dark blue trousers, blue satia scarf, and black billy- cock ; he went to the house about 8 a. m., asked for apartments, said he was about to commence work at the Post Office. Information to Mr. Sapt. Jervis, Police Office, Ormskirk, or at the Central Poliie Office, Dale- street, Liverpool.— Bow- street, August 13. Description of EDWARD W. COATES, agent to Messrs. Wilson, Jenner and Co., accountants and debt collectors, 1 and 2, Chiswell- street, Finsbury Pavement, charged with stealing, on lst instant, an English silver lever Watch, No. 92309, maker D. J. Hoy, Nattishall, Wilts, a long silver Guard attached; and a small round gold Locket, containing grey hair :-— about 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, light hair, light blue eyes, irregular teeth, rather large head ; dressed in black cloth coat, bound with black braid, light cloth trousers with brown stripe, and a light vest, black felt hat, and drab and white check necktie, small pattern. Information to Inspector Culley, Thetford, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his arrest,.— Bow- street, August 13. Description of MARGARET GIBSON, charged with stealing from her lodgings at Wrexham, on 9th instant:— a black and white woollen Shawl, with a red stripe running through the same ; a grey winsey Skirt ; a maroon Skirt; a pair of woman's Boots, 3 size, rough Morocco leather; a black Hat, turned up on one side, black velvet trimmings ; a pair of Drawers, woman's; and a pair of Stockings ; a black leather Purse, with brass fastenings, containing 6d. in Silver : — about 19 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sandy hair, pro- minent eyes, full round face, red nose, sun freckled, stout made, native of Cardiff, or Aberdare. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire, who holds a • warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, August 13. * Charged on warrant with stealing from a house at Rogate, on 7th instant;— a Suit of grey tweed ; also a white Shirt; a pair of lace- up Boots ; and soft felt Hat. JAMES FREDERICK SPENCER, a native of Wigan, Lancashire, 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, a deserter from 2nd battalion 12th Regiment, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, sword on left forearm, scar on left eyebrow. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Clarke, Midhurst, West Sussex.— Bow- street, August 13. Stolen from a bedroom at the ' Star' beerhouse, at Ash- ford, between 8 and 9 p. m., on 11th instant :—£ 3 10s. Silver and one Sovereign. By THOMAS ASHER, a lodger, who absconded the night of the robbery, 28 to 30 years of age, 5 ferit 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion and hair, light blue e' ei, small light moustache, no whiskers, stout build, rathei la ' ge nose, thick lips, and large tattoo mark on breast; dres* d iu a brown coat and vest, dark striped cloth trousers, nearly new lace- up boots, white wrapper round neck, and brown soft hat; has been in thej aimy, and ( holds a cer- tificate o.: proficiency in gymnastics ; has served in the Kent Constabulary ; a I also in the Northamptonshire Constabulary. Has a brother in the General Post Office, Northampton. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Information to Ser- geant Highwood, Kent Constabulary, Ashford.— Bow- street, August 13. Absconded from St. Alban's, on 7th instant:— EDWARD VIGT, a watchmaker, charged with stealing a silver Watch, since recovered, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches- high, dark complexion, slight dark maustache, very much pockpitted, no whiskers.
