Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the; purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *„* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwardod to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, ail Lietters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and .. Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of tie reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. Charged with highway robbery at Wirksworth, at 9- 45 p. m. on lath instant, of an American silver lever VYatch, No. 5356 ; a silver curb Albert Chain ( recovered), silver Seal with light pink stone, a silver Key, and Is. 4d. in Money :— by JAMES FORD, of Church Aston, Rotherham, a tramping blacksmith, about 40 to 45 years of age, about 6 feet high, stout build, full face, very dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache ; had on blue- black pilot cloth coat, black soft felt hat. And his brother, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, rither stout and muscular, thinisli face, dark brown hair and whiskers ; had on a moleskin or fustian coat. Information to Mr. Supt. Committed to Hereford Assizes on 20th instant, charged with assaulting and robbing Frederick Turner on night of 17th ultimo :— JAMES McGUIRE, of West Bromwich, labourer, 27 years of age, 5 feet 2^ inches high, sallow complexion, medium build, grey eyes, light brown hair, pockmarktd, very large scar below left temple; HARRY POWEL. of Bir- mingham, silversmith, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, medium build, grey eyes, brown hair, large scar on top of forehead, three small pockmarks centre of fore- head ; has served iu 2nd battalion 6th Regt. ; and ANNIE BICK, native of Gloucester, charwoman, 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, stout build, hazel eyes, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING-. Stolen at Byarsh, Kent, during the night of 24th instant, hy means of housebreaking ;— a £ 20 Bank of England Note ; four large silver table Spoons, initials ' J. E. F.' on two of them, ' J. Hulse, Kent County Constabulary, West Malling.— Bow- street. July 28. Stolen, by means of burglary, between 11 p m. 24th and 6 a. m. 25th instant, from Bosburv, Herefotd, about 12s. worth of Coppers with several Farthings. Tramps are suspected. Information to Mr. Supt. Blunsdon, Ledbury, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, July 28. Between 12' 30 and 3 a. m. 25th instant, a dwelling- house at Blackpool was entered, and stolen therefrom :— a lady's old English lever gold Watch, embossed ca- es and cold flowered dial, No. 5861 ; a double- cased Old English silver rack lever Watch, without the outer case, No 3552 ; a common silver Geneva Watch ; ha'f of a set of false Teeth, not complete, set in gold ; a dark brown leather Purse, con- taining a Sovereign, 2 half Sovereigns, and about 10s. in Silver and Coppers. Information to the Superintendent, County Police, Kirkham, Lancashire.— Bow- st., July 28. Stolen during the night of 22nd instant, from a housi at Wood Ditton, near Newmarket, by means of burglary :— a Tankard ( plain) ; a Ditto, with horse engraved thereon ; a Ditto, marked ' R. G.'; 2 pint Mugs ( plain) ; 3 half- pint Mugs ( do.); a quarter pint Do. ( do); 2 wine Strainers: a. cte. tn Jugi a Tea- pot, marked ' J G'; a Do. Stand, marked ' J. G.' ; a casur Stand; 2 fancy Spoons, grape shape ; a Fish Knife ; a S up Ladle; a Do., handsome pattern ; a Butter boat, fmall; a Gravy Spoon ; a pair of Snuffers; all old- fashioned. The following are modern a small Salver ; a Fish Knife aud Fork in case ; a pair asparagus Tongs ; a large ( c ike) Kuife; a pair Ladles, queen's pattern; 6 Tea Spoons, do. ; 20 Table Spoons, do.; 9 Dessert Spoons, do. ; 12 do. Knives and Forks ; a Tartlet Kuife ; 4 pairs Nut- trackers. Three men, strangers, are suspected ; they were seen about the place, and are each between 30 and 40ye: irs of age :— one About 5 feet 7 inches high, pitted with smallpox, no whiskers, and fair or sandy complexion ; dressed iu blue or dark jacket, and round black hat ; second, about the same height, dark complexion, hollow cheeks and shaved, hair under chin ; had a peculiar appearance ; dressed in dark ; third, short, and thick set with heavy brown moustache, clean chin, dark brown coat, black round hat, is sharp looking. A tall man aud a little woman with several flash rings driving a chestnut pony and cart, and a tall man with big black horse and strong cart, all strangers, were also seen in the neighbour- hood and are Btispected, A reward of £- 25 will be paid to any person or persons who shall give such information and evidence as shall cause the conviction of the offenders. During the night of 23rd or morning of 24th instant, the Post Office at Harlow was broken and entered and stolen therein :—£ 1 18s. worth of Penny Postage Stamps, 3s. worth of Halfpenny Postage Stamps, Is. worth of lid. Stamps, 4s. 6d. worth of 2£ d. Stamps, 5s 4d. worth of 8d. Stamps, 7s. worth of Receipt Stamps, £ 1 9s. iu Money, several Clasp Knives, aud aluminum Peucil Cases. Information to Mr. Sopt. Simpson, Epping ; to Inspector Odani, Harlow ; or to Inspector Robinson, Constabulary Office, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, July 26. Stolen in Stalybridge on 22nd instant:— a pail of man's lace- up Boots, partly worn ; a blue and white cheek cotton Shirt; a woollen ditto, various colours ; a pair of man's Socks, a pair of man's grey hand- knitted Stockings, a blue and white striped Muffler ; a black and white ditto ; and 37s. in Silver. By JAMES JOBSON, a tramping piano player, about 30 years of age. 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, and sandy hair and whiskers; dressed iu shabby black e. lnth clothes and cloth cap. Will be seeking work at public- house singing rooms. Information to the Chief Constable, Stalybridge, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boir- st., July 26. During the night of 21st. instant, a lock- up shop in Mill- street, Congleton, was entered, and stolen therein :— 13J yards of black corded dress Silk, good quality, coloured edges; 1 man's Shetland merino under Vest, ; 3 pairs of hand knit worsted Stockings, colours navy blue, blue grey, and Shetland ; 2 black and white silk Windsor Ties, cut on the cross ; 2 pairs of men's lace Boots ; sever. il pairs of women's side- spring Boots; aud a lot of cheap Brooches, various patterns. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such informa- tion as will lead to the recovery of the property, and the apprehension of the offender or offenders. Stolen by means of burglary, at Bury- laue, Epping, on 21st or 22nd instant ;— about £ t worth of penny postage aud receipt Stamps ; a cut glass scent Bottle, silver- mounted, ' J. S.' in Old English on oue end ; also a silk Umbrella. Information to Mr. Supt. Description of a man, wanted on two charges of burglary st Hulme, near Longton, on tho night of 18. h inst. :— 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, h aze 1 eyes, slender build, burn mark under right eyebro-, native of Cheadle, Staffordshire ; dressed iu old black haiu tommy hat, old grey overcoat, which is too lai g • for 1 im ; 1 e had also in his possession, when he absconded, an old grey overcoat to fit a boy about 12 years of age, two cuts across the left breast, this is part of the proceeds of the burglary. Information to Mr. Supt. McWilliams, Police Office, LoDgti n Staffordshire— Bow- street, July 28. Between 10 p. m, on 25th, and 7 a. m., 26t, h instant, a dwelling house at Lockers Park, Hemel Hempstead, was entered, and a small handsome carriage Clock stolen; also about 5s. in Coppers, from a small papiermache box. Also during the same hours, a dwelling- house at Heath Lodge. Hemel Hempstead, was broken into, aud an old dark blue Mackintosh, much worn, stolen therein. Information to Inspector Chapman, Hemel Hempstead, Herts. — Bow- streei, July 28. Early on the morning of 24th inst. the Clock Public- house, Bickenhill, was burglariously entered, and stolen therein :— six 2 gallon Stone Bottles, three filled with Irish Whiskey, one Pale Brandy, one Sherry Wine, and one with Gin ; all the bottles are stamped 1G. Thompson, Shirley Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Solihull, Warwickshire.— Charged with committing three burglaries at Blandford, during the night of 15th instaut, iu company of two other m- m i i custody ; CHARLES LYNE, of Sherborne, Dorset, 19 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, no whiskers, dark complexion, light brown hair ; dressed in black coat, black vest, cord trousers, dark felt hat, and lace- up boots. Sometimes travels with his father with swingiug boats, when last seen was carrying several revolvers, new, a piece & f Scotch cloth, aud a pair of men's lace- up boots. Proceeds of the burglaries tied up in a red handkerchief. Information to Mr. Supt. Underwood, Blandford, Dorset.— Bow- st., July 23. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 19th instant, from the Rectory, Drewsteignton, Devon :— 6 small Fcrks, 2 l'able Spoous, 6 Dessert Spoons, 1 Mug, 4 Salt Spoons, 1 Tray, about 7 iuches across, all with crest - a lion ; 6 large Forks, crest— a heron ; 1 Mug, marked ' RH. C.'; 3 old Soup Spoons, ' C.'; 1 Sugar Lifter, 1 Butter Knife, 2 Skewers, 1 Pepper Box, 1 Tea Caddy ; 1 silver lever Hunting Watch, maker ' Mallett, Barnstaple, No. 1460,' crest— a heron ; 3 £ 200 Portuguese 3 per cent. Bonds, Nos. 5708- 9- 10; 2 New Zealand ' 68 Loan 5 per cent. Consolidated, £ 200, Nos. 2451- 2 ; I New Zealand ' 70 ditto ditto, £ 1000, No. 1713; and £ 5 in money. Supposed by two rueu :— one about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 iuches high, fair complexion, grey hair and whiskers, chin shaved, no moustache ; dressed in a black frock coat and small plaid trousers, hard round poll hat, wide brim, and elastic side boots ; carried i shiuy black leather Bag ; the other ia about 21 yea- s of age, 5 feet 8 ins. high, fresh- or fair complexion, very thin face, small dark whiskers, and no moustache; dressed in a dark suit of clothes, elastic- side boots, hard square poll hat; carried . villi him a light coloured bag, bound with yellow leather, boJi carrying their bags on their backs like knapsacks. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter— Bow- street, July 23. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found at Bromley, Hurst, ou 21st instant, and now in ihe possession of Mr. Parton :— 2 Heifers, both in nrlk, one r ; d and the other a roan co ; ur, both ate vary soie footed, and appear to have travelled a long way on the road, both ara in good condition. Information to Inspector Barrett, Town Hall, Rugeley, Staffordshire.- - Bow- street, Julu 28. Stoleu from a field at Harborne, during the night of 25th instant:— a black Mare, aged, 15jt J auds high, white star on foiehead, rather thick hocks, in good condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Whitehurst, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, or Sergeant Kavanagh, Harbourne, near Birmingham..— Bow- street. July 28. Description of HENRY HARRIS, alias BLONDIN, committed for trial to the next Assizes at Norwich, charged with stealiog a Horse and Cart :— 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, daik browu hair and t- yes, black whiskers, moustache shaved off, oval visage, slight build, scar on left wrist from a severe cut; born in Canada West. States he was in 74th Highlanders, and invalided from Netley Hospital ou 17th March, 1878. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Norwich. - Bow- st., July 28. 4 POLICE GAZETTE. July 19 Stolen from a field in Stalybridge, late cn night of 20th, or early on morning of 21st instant :— a grey cart Horse, aged, 16 hands high, in good condition, has a cut mark or scar on right buttock. Information to Chief Constable Chadwick. Stalybridge.— Bow- street, July 2G. The two Horses reported as stolen from Greets Green, West Bromwich, on 12th instant, have been found strayed, and returned to owner.— Bow- street, July 26. Bemanded at Cannock, till 26th instant, charged with stealing a Tony ( recovered) JOSEPH POWELL, a groom, 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather stout build, freah complexion, dark brown hair, and slight whiskers, grey eyes, | full face, scar ou left cheek; dressed in dark grey mixture cloth suit, black hard felt hat, and elastic- side boots ; he is a native of Staunton- on- Harrow, Herefordshire, and has lived at Birmingham. Information to Mr. Supt. Hockney, Brownhills, Walsall, or to Sergeant Cockerell, Cannock, near Stafford.— Bow- st., July 26. Charged on warrant with stealing a Pony and Cart, recovered, at Houghton Regis, oil 17th instant :— EDWARD STEVENS, 23 years - f age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slim Wd, pale complexion, grey eyes, light hair, very slight gioger moustache aud whiskers, native of Dunstable, Beds ; generally dressed in plush waistcoat, with moleskin sleeves and pearl buttons, sometimes wears a dark cloth frock coat, dark trousers, black billy hat, and strong lace- up boots, is a hay binder ; belongs to the Beds Militia, and may try to enlist. Information to Mr. Supt. Tydeman, County Police Station, Luton, Beds.— Bow- street, July 23. weario, ™ an old mackintosh, and hard round black hat. Stolen between 8 p. m. 20th, and 6 am. 21st instant, from a field, at Black Bank, Silverclale, a bright brown strong cart Mare, 8 vears old, 16 hands high, white blaze down face to nose, off hind fetlock white, hair rubbed off buttocks, with breechband, 2 grey saddle marks, on near side of back, shod for the road with pieces of steel across toes of shoes. Infor- mation to Mr. Supfc. Hall, Tunstall, Stoke- upon- Trent, or Sergeant Dodd, Silverdale, near Newcastle- under- Lyne.— Bow- street, July 23. Charged with stealing Horses, Carts, and Harness, & c. :— JAMES LAMBOURNE, a horse coper, 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion and hair, gipsy appear- ance, thin features, downcast look, slouching gait; dress, long dark coat, cord trousers, soft billy- cock hat; is well known at Salisbury, and frequents liorse repositories. And GEORGE BARNETT, alias BARNARD, MATTHEWS, and GEORGE THE CLIPPER, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexiou, brown hair, small whiskers ; dress, dark cutaway coat and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat, sometimes wears a high one ; is accom- panied by a lad 15 years of age, known by name of Bertie, frequents horse repositories ; supposed to have in their possession, stolen, a light chestnut gelding Cob, 7 years old, 14 hands high, white blaze down face, scar ou chest and near stifle, dark chestnut and white tail, wavy, high action, a fast trotter; also a Dog- cart, nearly new, painted dark green picked out with red, maker's name ' chapman, Bagshot,' upon caps of wheels, which have only two felloes in each, and are braced neatly together at the joints with iron. .£ 10 reward will be paid by the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, for such information as will lead to the apprehension of these men.— Metropolitan Police, July 23. Likely to stay at low lodging- houses, unions, & c., and has been convicted of felony at Ilkeston, Nottingham, and on 19th May, 1876, at Spittlegate. Information to Mr. Supt. Somerset, Bingharn, Nottinghamshire.— Bow- street, July 28. Absconded from Eastbourne, ou 14th instant, charged with stealing a Sovereign WILLIAM JOHN HERBERT, a labourer, from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion* light eyes, dark browu hair, tuft on cliin, stoutish figure, a; native of Reading, Berks, but lately residing in Eastbourne , dressed in brown cloth cap with peak, white slop, white fustian trousers, coloured shirt, and heavy half- boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Newnham, East Sussex Constabulary,, Eastborne, who holds warrant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, July 28. Absconded, 24th March last, charged with stealing Bank Notes anil Jewellery :— HAMILTON. MACARTHV, alias STEWART and JENKINS, 19 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 10 inches high, slim build, fresh complexion, hair and whiskers ( mutton chop) dark brown, blue eyes, high forehead, small nose, » thick lips, long neck, apple in tlivoat very prominent, two middle lingers right hand bent from being broken, supposed to have a sword cut on one arm, near shoulder; speaks with strong American accent ; dressed in black cutaway coat » black vest and trousers, black bowler hat, linen marked ' Macarthy.' Likely to be found at Docks endeavouring to leave for America. Warrant issued. Infor- mation t. o the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Folia, July 28. MALCOLM PIKE, advertised in the Police Gazette of ICth instant, charged with stealing 15 Watches at Weston- super- Mare, has been arrested at Ramsgate in company with another Boy, and 5 of the stolen Watches found on them. The other ten have not yet been recovered. Information :, to Mr. Supt. Gillbank, Somerset Constabulary Office, Axbridge. — Bow- street, July 26. Charged on warrant with embezzling 25s, :— CHARLES HAMMOND, late of Leek, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, sandy whiskers ; dressed in dark jacket, cord, trousers, and soft hat ; a silk dyer by trade, but seeks employment as a labourer. Information to Mr. Supt,. Williams, Police Office, Leek, Staffordshire, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, July 26. inches high, broad set, fair German features, light bair, and no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a pea- green jacket with velvet collar and hard black felt hat. Left about noon the same day, stating he was going to Hull, where he bad been, residing ; he carried his tools in a black leather bag ; he also took away - with him a new double- bellows rosewood Concertina, which he had obtained for half- an- hour to show a person. He speaks English very well, is very forward in his manner, and generally lodges at public- bouses. Information to Head Constable Bellamy, Boston, Lincolnshire. — Bow- street, July 23. Stolen about 2 p. m., on 25 th instant, from the ' White Swan' inn, Horsefair :—£ 44 10s. in Gold, and £ 16 in Silver, By a man lodger, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, and has lost nearly all his front teeth in upper jaw ; dressed in grey mixture woollen clothes, hard felt hat, and elastic- side boots. Description of SAMUEL JEFFRIES, late Station Master at Evershot, Dorset, G. W.
