POLICE SAZETT - CONTAINING The substance of aU Information received in eatet of Felony and of Misdemeanort of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate at possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6485 MONDAY, JULY 26, 1880. Notice.— It IB requested that all communications for tho purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *„* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and^ Dosertcrs from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They Bhould contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the propel ty, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Stolen from the person, on the Sunday School Centenary Celebration in Nottiugham, on 22nd instant:— A gold lever Watch, No. 11579, maker Wm. Rose, Gorhill A silver Ditto No. 19927 or 19972, Hunter- maker, Simpson, Hertford. A ditto Ditto No. 4523—' 1128' scratched in outer case, maker Hathers. A ditto Ditto No. 3950, maker Harris, West and Co., Manchester. A silver Geneva Watch, No. 138284, cases much worn. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham.— Bow- street, July 26. Charged with highway robbery at Wirksworth, at 9' 45 p. n. on 15th instant, of an American silver lever Watch, No. 6356 ; a silver curb Albert Chain ( recovered), silver Seal with light pink stone, a silver Key, aud Is. 4d. in Money :— by JAMES FORD, of Church Aston, Rotherham, a tramping blacksmith, about 40 to 45 years of age, about 6 feet high, stout build, full face, very dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache ; had on blue- black pilot cloth coat, black soft felt hat. And his brother, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, rather stout and muscular, thiuish face, dark brown hair and whiskers ; had on a moleskin or fustian coat. Information to Mr. Supt. Committed to Hereford Assizes on 29th instant, charged with assaulting and robbing Frederick Turner on night of 17th ultimo :— JAMES McGUIRE, of West Bromwich, labourer, 27 years of age, 5 feet 2J inches high, sallow complexion, medium build, grey eyes, light brown hair, pockmarked, very large scar below left temple; HARRY POWEL, of Bir- mingham, silversmith, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, medium build, grey eyes, brown hair, large scar on top of forehead, three small pockmarks centre of fore- head ; has served iu 2nd battalion 6th Regt. ; and ANNIE BICK, native of Gloucester, charwoman, 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, stout build, hazel eyes, brown hair, broken nose, several scars on forehead, scar over left eye, and tattooed on right arm ' G. | T. Thompson, Shirley Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Solihull, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, July 26. During the night of 23rd or morning of 24th instant, the Post Office at Harlow was broken and entered and stolen therein :— ill 18s. worth of Penny Postage Stamps, 3s. worth of Halfpenny Postage Stamps, Is. worth of lid. Stamps, 4s. 6d. worth of 2jd. Stamps, 5s. 4d. worth of 8d. Stamps, 7s. worth of Receipt Stamps, £ 1 9s. in Money, several Clasp Knives, and aluminum Pencil Cases. Information to Mr. Supt. Simpson, lipping ; to Inspector Odam, Harlow ; or to Inspector Robinson, Constabulary Office, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, July 26. Stolen in Stalybridge on 22nd instant:— a pail of man's lace- up Boots, partly worn ; a blue and white check cotton Shirt; a woollen ditto, various colours ; a pair of man's Socks, a pair of man's grey hand- knitted Stockings, a blue and white striped Muffler ; a black and white ditto ; and 37s. in Silver. By JAMES JOBSON, a tramping piano player, about years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, and sandy hair and whiskers; dressed in shabby black cloth clothes and cloth cap. Will be seeking work at public- house singing rooms. Information to the Chief Constable, Stalybridge, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 26. During the night of 21st instant, a lock- up shop in Mill- street, Congleton, was entered, and stolen therein :— 13 J yards of black corded dress Silk, good quality, coloured edges; 1 man's Shetland merino uuder Vest ; 3 pairs of hand knit worsted Stockings, colours navy blue, blue grey, and Shetland ; 2 black and white silk Windsor Ties, cut on the cross ; 2 pairs of men's lace Boots ; several pairs of women's side- spring Boots; and a lot of cheap Brooches, various patterns. ,£ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such informa- tion as will lead to the recovery of the property, ana the apprehension of the offender or offenders. Stolen by means of burglary, at Bury- lane, Epping, on 21st or 22nd instant:— about £ i worth of penny postage and receipt Stamps ; a cut glass scent Bottle, silver- mounted, ' J. S.' in Old English on one end ; also a silk Umbrella. Information to Mr. Supt. Simpson, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Constabulary Office, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, July 26. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Early on the morning of 24th inst. the Clock Public- house, Bickenhill, was burglariously entered, and stolen Charged with committing three burglaries at Blandford, during the night of 15th instant, in company of two other men iu custody ; CHARLES LYNE, of Sherborne, Dorset, 19 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, no whiskers, dark complexion, light brown hair ; dressed in black coat, black vest, cord trousers, dark felt hat, and lace- up boo's. Sometimes travels with his father with swinging boats, when last seen was carrying several revolvers, new, a piece © f Scotch cloth, and- a pair of men's lace- up boots. Proceeds of the burglaries tied up in a red handkerchief. Information to Mr. Supt. Underwood, Blandford, Dorset.— Bow- st., July 23. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 19th instant, from the Rectory, Drewsteignton, Devon ;— C small Forks, Table Spoons, 6 Dessert Spoons, 1 Mug, 4 Salt Spoons, I Tray, about 7 iuches across, all with crest - a lion ; 6 large Forks, crest— a heron ; 1 Mug, marked ' R. H. C.'; 3 old Soup Spoons, ' C.'; 1 Sugar Lifter, 1 Butter Knife, 2 Skewers, 1 Pepper Box, 1 Tea Caddy ; 1 silver lever Hunting Watch, maker ' Mallett, Barnstaple, No. 1460,' crest— a heron ; 3 J200 Portuguese 3 per cent. Bonds, Nps. 5708- 9- 10; 2 New Zealand ' 68 Loan 5 per cent. Consolidated, £- 200, Nos. 2451- 2 ; 1 New Zealand' 70 ditto ditto,. £ 1000, No. 1713; aud £ 5 in money. Supposed by two men :— one about 50 years of age, feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, grey hair aud whiskers, chin shaved, no moustache ; dressed in a black frock coat and small plaid trousers, harii round poll hat, wide I rim, and elastic side boots ; carried a slimy black leather Bag ; the other is about 21 yea> s of age, 5 feet 8 ins. high, fresh or fair complexion, very thin face, small dark whiskers, and no moustache; dressed in a dark suit of clothes, elastic- side boots, hard square poll hat; carried . vith him a light coloured bag, bound with yellow leather, boih carrying their bags on their backs like knapsacks. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter— Bow- street, July 23. On 16th instant, a dwelling- house at Eye, was broken and entered and stolen therefrom:— a dark grey Jacket, two pockets outside, black buttons, nearly new ; an old- fashioned verge silver Watch, No. 28757, dial cracked, worn thin round edge, steel Chain, brass stud fastened to watch, and stud to put through button- hole ; also a small Pistol with yellow butt. Information to Mr. Supt. Dykes, Couuty Police Station, Leominster, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, July 21. Remanded tilt 27th instant, on a charge of burglary, in Oxford :— ARTHUR HARRIS, a rag and bone collector, 38 years of age, 5 feet 3 iuches high with shoes, dark com plexion and hair, hazel eyes, mole on left shoulder blade, small do. on neck under left ear, burn mark bottom of left ribs, blue mark left side of nose, and on left eyebrow, scar on back of head, nail ok forefinger of right hand injured, hair very thin on crown of head, rather large nose, and stammers when speaking. Gave the address of 13, Kent- street, Nottingham, false, travels the county selling paper caps and windmills to children, and collecting and taking in exchange rags, bones, &< 5., lodges at common lodging- houses, and frequents the company of4prostitutes, aud stated that he visited Birmingham, Leicester, aud Sheffield. Information to Mr. Supt. Head, Police Office, Oxford.— Bow- street, July 21. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field in Stalybridge, late on night of 20th, or early on morning of 21st instant :— a grey cart Horse, aged, 10 hangs high, in good condition, has a cut mark or scar on right buttock. Information to Chief Constable Chadwick, Stalybridge.— Bow- street, July 26. The two Horses reported as stolen from Greets Green, West Bromwich, on 12th instant, have been found strayed, aaJ returned to owner.— Bow- street, July 26. Remanded at Cannock, til] 26th instant, charged with stealing a Pony ( recovered) :— JOSEPH POWELL, a groom, 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather stowt build, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, and slight whiskers, grey eyes, full face, scar on left cheek; dressed in dark grey mixture cloth suit, black hard felt hat, and elastic- side boots ; foe is a native of Staunton- on- Harrov^ j3fcrefordshire, and has lived at Birmingham. Charged on warrant with stealing a Pony and Cait, recovered, at Houghton Regi-, on 17th instant :— EDWARD STEVENS, 23 years - f age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slim build, pale complexion, grey eyes, light hair, very slight ginger moustache aud whiskers, native of Dunhtable, Beds ; generally dressed in plush waistcoat, with moleskin sleeves and pearl buttons, sometimes wears a dark cloth frock coat, dark trousers, black billy hat, and stroug lace- up boots, is a hay binder:, >* longs to the Beds Militia, and may try to enliit. Information to Mr. Supt. Tydeman, County Police Station, Luton, Beds.— Bow- street, July 23. Stolen between 8 p. m. 20t. h, and 6 am. 21st instant, from a field, at Black Bank, Silverdale, a bright brown strong cart Mare, 8 years old, 16 hands high, white blaze down face to nose, off hiud fetlock white, hair rubbed off buttocks, with breechband, 2 grey saddle marks, on near side of back, shod for the road with pieces of ste 1 across toes of shoes. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Hall, Tuustall, Stoke- upon- Trent, or Sergeant Dodd, Silverdale, near Newcastle- under- Lyue.— Bow- street, July 23. Charged with stealing Horses, Carts, and Harness, & c. :— JAMES LAMBOURNE, a horse coper, 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion and hair, gipsy appear- ance, thin features, downcast look, slouching gait ; dress, long dark coat, cord trousers, soft billy- cock hat; is well known at Salisbury, and frequents horse repositories. And GEORGE BARNETT, al: as BARNARD, MATTHEWS, and GEORGE THE CLIPPER, 35 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, small whiskers ; dress, dark cutaway coat and vest, light trousers, black haid felt hat, sometimes wears a high one; is accom- panied by a lad 15 years of age, known by name of Bertie, frequents horse repositories ; supposed to have iu their possession, stolen, a light chestnut gelding Cob, 7 years old, 14 hands high, white blaze down face, scar ou chest and near stifle, dark chestnut and white tail, wavy, high action, a fast trotter ; also a Dog- cart, nearly new, paiuted dark green picked out with red, maker's name ' Chapman, Bagshot,' upon caps of wheels, which have only two felloes in each, aid are braced neatly together at the joints with iron. £ 10 reward will be paid by the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, for such iuformation as will lead to the apprehension of these men.— Metropolitan Police, July 23. Stolen from Elmhurst Park, near Lichfield, during the night of 13tli instaut :— a ewe Sheep, black face and legs, Shropshire breed, aud in good condition. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Inspector arrett, Town Hall, Rugeley, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, July 21. Stolen from a field at Newtown, West Bromwich, on 12th instaut :— 2 Horses, one dark brown Horse, coming 6 ) ears, 15 hands 2 inches high, iu fail- coudition, recently shod on fore feet, supposed blacksmith's name of 1 J. Colley' on shoes, few grey hairs on right shoulder from a sore, small lump below the hock on near hind leg, bald place ou joint of right fetlock. The other a dark brown Mare, aged, broken winded, in fair condition, and about 13 hands high. Infor- mation to Sergeant Chatham, Greets Green, West Bromwicb, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, July 21. Absconded charged with stealing a Mare, at Kentchurch, Herefordshire, on 4th instant, recovered, soled at Malvern, Worcestershire, on 5th instant:— GEORGE SMITH, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, aud side whiskers, inclined to be sandy, chin clean shaved ; dressed in brown bowler bat, knocked down at top, brown top coat, dark brown mixture coat aud trousers, heavy nailed boots, woru down at toes, bow legged, and turns in his toes when walking, speaks sharp, and with a Welsh accent, left Malvern by the 2 32 p. m. train same day for Hereford. Information to Mr. Supt. Cope, County Police Station, Hereford, or P. S. Phillips, Abbey Dore, near Hereford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 21. 4 POLICE GAZETTE. July 19 LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. MALCOLM PIKE, advertised in the Police Gazette of 16th instant, charged with stealing 15 Watches at Weston- super- Mare, has been arrested at Ramsgate in company with another Boy, and 5 of the stolen Watches found on them. The other ten have not yet been recovered. Information , to M'. Supt. Gillbauk, Somerset Constabulary Office, Axbridge. •— Bow- street, July 26. Charged on warrant with embezzling 25s. :— CHARLES HAMMOND, late of Leek, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, sandy whiskers ; dressed in dark jacket, cord trousers, and soft hat; a silk dyer by trade, but seeks employment as a labourer. Information to Mr. Supt. Williams, Police Office, Leek, Staffordshire, who holds the • warrant for his arrest.— 1Bow- street, July 26. Stolen about 2 p m., on 25th instant, from the ? White Swan' inn, Horsetail-:—£ 44 10s. in Gold, and £ lG in Silver. By a man lodger, about 2S years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, and has lost nearly all his front teeth in upper jaw ; dressed in grey mixture woollen clothes, hard felt hat, and elastic- side boots. Information to Chief Constable Fearnside, Town Hall, Pontefract, Yorkshire.— Bow street, July 26. Description of JOHN C. BROOKE, late a bank clerk, charged on warrant with embezzling, on 2nd instant, £ 50 :— he is 25 years of age, 6 feet high, of good address, square shoulders, long face, fair complexion, high cheek bones, high forehead, large blue eyes, rather large ears, and speaks some- what gruffly, very short cut brown hair, slight light mous- tache, no whiskers, has a confidential walking, throwing his hands up with a knack of snapping the thumb and fingers ; usually dressed in light or brown tweed suit, sometimes wears a black coat and light soft billycock hat with large brim, which he wears pulled down over his eyes ; is a native of Oxford, where he is well known, and is very fond of billiards and boating. Information to Head Constable Hibberd, Basingstoke, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 26. Charged with stealing a pair of Riding Boots ( recovered), at Great Marlow, Bucks, on 18th inst. :— WALTER YOUNG', a pedlar, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair and moustache, no whiskers, gre^ eyes, and fresh com- plexion ; dressed ia brown mixture cloth jacket, old cord trousers, patched ' aud dirty, hard felt hat, aud old blucher hoots ; military appearance, has been a soldier, aud belongs Army Reserve. When last seen he was carrying a large wicker basket with two handles, lined with pink; sells pin cushion, covered with crochet work, combs, tapes, laces, & c. Information to Inspector Chaplin, Police Station, Great Marlow, Bucks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 26. Stolen at Cassisbury Park, between 8 and 9 a. m. on 2! st inst. :— a lady's gold Watch with bunch of forget- me- nots and grean leaves on back, a gold face, and glass broken ; a gold Chain; a gentleman's silver English lever Watch, No. 9085, with second hand deficient, has a chisel mark on the initial plate ; a gold Albert, curb pattern, 9 carat, with gold Locket attached, containing the portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Fosdyke; a pair of small gold Eardrops, 9 ' carat ; a gold Brooch with a brilliant cross in centre ; a Brooch with opal centre and gold frame ; a gold Dress Ring with cluster of rubies and garnets, two rubies deficient; a Dress Ring with two emeralds, and one brilliant in centre ; a gold Dress Ring, two pearls and 3 rubies, 18 carat, almost new ; a silver Brooch aud Earrings to match ; a silver Locket; a pair of silver Bracelets ; a gold Stud with ruby in centre scratched across ; a puzzle Money Box, nearly full of threepenny and fourpenny pieces ; two £ 5 Notes ; £ 16 in Gold. Supposed by a man about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dressed iu a light suP, haid felt hat, little whiskers and full moustache, and carried a small cane, and of gentlemanly appearance. Information to Mr. Supt. Isgate, Watford, Herts.— Bow street, July 26. Stolen, on 18th instant, from the Jolly Farmers' public- house, at Loddon : — a lady's gold Watch, maker's name J. Bull, Bedford, inside case—' Presented by E. B. to G. A. D.' attached to the gold Watch an imitation gold Guard ; a Geneva silver Watch ; a silver Watch ; and a German silver Watch ; a gold Wedding Ring ; two ladies' Dress Rings ; a gold Brooch, flowered pattern ; and a pair of gold Ear- rings. No maker's name or No. known of the silver Watches. By GEO. WHALL, a tramping collar maker, about 30 years of age, light complexion and moustache, full grey eyes, about 5 ft. 7 or 8 inches high ; dressed in black coat, brown black striped tweed trousers, pepper- and- salt coloured vest, hard hat with shot holes in it; he had also a black cloth cap with peak, a tassel in front. He worked at Chelmsford for a Mr. Coney about last Xmas time; also in Norwich, travelling with a dark womau about the same age, with scar on side of her neck, carrying a bag. Information to Mr. Supt. Riches, Loddon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, or to Deputy Chief Constable Pigott, County Police Station, Norwich.— Brno- street, July 23. Charged, on warrant, with larceny of a Watch, recovered, at Boston, on 17th instant :— CHRISTIAN GLAZIER, a German, watch maker, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, broad set, fair German features, light hair, and no whiskers or moust cie ; dressed in a pea- green jacket with velvet collar and hard black felt hat. Left about noon the same day, stating he was going to Hull, where he had been residing ; lie carried his tools in a black leather bag; he also took away with him a new double- bellows rosewood Concertina, which he had obtained for half- an- hour to show a person. He speiks English very well, is very forward in his manner, and generally lodges at public- houses. Information to Head Constable Bellamy, Boston, Lincolnshire. — Bow- street, July 23. Stolen on 14th instant, from Newstead a small silver lever Watch, ' H. V. Hopper, Plymouth,' on dial, and on the back ; an initation jet Guard ; and a small dark Stone with • with grey and white marks across. By a man about 50 years of age ; dressed in a dark monkey jacket, drill vest or slop underneath, moleskin or fustian trousers, and soft black hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Blanchard, Norton, Malton.— Bow- street, July 23. Charged with stealing a Shawl, recovered, at Wingrave, Bucks :— a man about 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, face clean shaved, slight moustache ; dressed in blue serge jacket and trousers, and Blucher boots, walks eiect, and has the appearance of a military man. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Denson, Aylesbury, or to Inspector Sutton, Police Station, Linslade, Bucks,— Bow- street July 23. f. Stolen at Beaconsfield, on 20th instant:— a pair of shoot- ing Boots, new, toe caps, brass lace holes, two outside rows of nails, and three rows in centre, the outside row on each boot are ridge nails, the others are round, waist brass rivetted. y 2 men, one about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy whiskers ; dressed in a felt hat, velvet jacket, moleskin trousers and vest, and the stolen boots. The other about 2S years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, slight dark moustache, and dark complexion; dressed in a light coloured sugar loaf shaped hat, dark coat and vest, and cord trousers, patched on knees.
