POLICE GAZETTE. AUTSORFTS. CONTAINING The substance of all Information* received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputei Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persona charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not knoum, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horse* for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6482 MONDAY, JULY 19, 1880 Kotioe.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and^ Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons . to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Charge 1 with highway robbery at Worksworth, at 9- 45 p. ® . on 15th instant, of an American silver lever Watch, No. 5356 ; a silver curb Albert Chain, silver Seal with light pink stone, a silver Key, and Is. 4d. in Money :— a tramping black- smith, about 40 to 45 years of age, about 6 feet high, stout build, full face, very dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache ; had on blue- black pilot cloth coat, black soft felt hat. And a mar: about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, rather stout and muscular, thinish face, dark brown hair and whiskers ; had on a moleskin or fustian coat,. Information to Mr. Supt. Sharpe, Wirksworth, Derbyshire. — Bow- street, July 19. Stolen from the person at Belle Vue Gardens, on 12th instant:— a silver skeleton lever Watch, engine turned case, sunk seconds, the hour finger has been r epaired, makers Bunyon and Gardner, No. 9768. Information to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Constabulary Office, Old Trafford, near Man- chester.— Bow- street, July 19. Charged with highway robbery, with violence, at Mar- bury, near Northwich, on 9th instant: an Irishman about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, no whiskers, full face, and pockpitted ; dressed in a long grey monkey jacket, faded, dark trousers, billycock hat and clogs ; handkerchief tied in a sailor's knot. Information to Mr. Supt. Williamson, Town Hall, Runcorn, or to Sergeant Dean, Great Budworth, near Northwich.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen from the person on Hereford Race Course, on 8th instant:— a silver crystal lever Watch, No. 88595, jewelled in 4 holes, gold balance, maker's name Margrett, Hereford. Information to Mr. Supt. Davies, City Police, Hereford.— Bow- street, July 12. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of 7tb instant the woollen factory at Llangattock, Brecon, was broken into and stolen therein :— about 36 yards of unfinished brown Cloth, It yards wide ; about 10 yards of Welsh plaid Flannel, |- wide ; and about 32 yards of white Flannel, unscoured, in 2 pieces, one piece about 12 yards long, and {- wide, the other piece about 20 yards long, and f- wide. Information to Mr. Supt. Evans, Crickhowell, Breconshire.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen by means of burglary from the rectory at Hor- sington, near Wincanton, during the night of 15th instant ;— a silver Teapot, engraved ' Presented to Alice Matilda Neal. by her father's Tenant, on the occasion of her marriage to the Rev. K. D. C. Wickham, April 12, 1877. Information to Mr. Supt. Sheppard, Police Office, Wincanton, Somerset.— Bow- street, July 19. Further information respecting the burglary at Wadley House, advertised in Police Gazette of 7th instant:— 2 men are suspected, one 35 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, dark hair and whiskers; dressed in dark clothes, hard felt hat, and carried a light overcoat on his arm. The other about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair and whiskers, bald on top of head ; dressed in brown suit, with tall black hat, and carried a small black bag. The £ 5 stolen has been recovered. Information to the Chief Constable of Berkshire, Reading, or to Mr. Supt. Reece, Faringdon, Berks.— Bow- st., July 19. Stolen by means of burglary, at Dorking, on 15th inst. : — a Snuff Box,' C. W. Chaldecott' engraved on lid ; 11 Tea Spoons; 6 Dessert Spoons; a Gravy Spoons ; 6 large Table Spoons; 4 Salt Spoons ; 2 Sauce Ladles; 8 large Forks; 8 small Forks ; a Mustard Pot and Spoon ; 4 Salt Cellars; a Fish Knife and Fork ; a drinking Goblet; and a Mug ; all silver. Also a large gold Seal with coat of arms ; a gold Ring with initals ' C. W. O.'; and a brown silk Umbrella, with two silver bands around the handle ; and 5 or 6 false Teeth, set in a Gold Plate for upper jaw, one tooth missing. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, July 19. During the night of 1l7th instant, a signal box on the North Staffordshire Railway, near Puustall, was broken and entered and stolen therein :•— a small round American lever Clock, rose wood frame, white dial, * itlr the letters ' N. S. R.' and black hands ; and an Accordion, with ten keys, and two stop keys on one end. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen on 14tlr instant, by means of housebreaking, at East Woodhay :— a silver Inkstand, crost— an ostrich with a horseshoe in bill, maker ' Tarr and Mortimer'; ?. centre taper Candlestick, compartments under, and pen lecepticle each side; two silver capped Bottles, about 9 inches long ; au old silver Snuffer Tray, ab. ut 9 inches long, crest as above with letter ' L' under ; an old gold Seal, white cornelian, crest— a bear's paw aud letters - B. O.'; a small gold Seal, plain imita- tion 1 Beryl'; a small carriage Clock, in leather case, about 4 inches high ; a coral S^ al, engraving on gold three snakes' heads aud necks ; a gentleman's black Mackintosh, maker ' Mathews, Cock spur- street,' has ' J. Lindsey, Eastwoodhay,' written inside collar; a small black Overcoat, much worn ; a pair of 4- hole lace- up Shoes ; a strong linen Apron, marked ' K. Honour, No. 12'; a brown basin Cloth, ' L24 | B'; a mother- o'- pearl Penholder. Information to Mr. Supt. Kin- shott, Hants Constabulary, Kingsclere.— Bow street, July 19. Stolen, by means of burglary, from the Vicarage, Baverstock, near Salisbury, on 9th instant:— a silver Flagon, large height and size, engraved or ornamented in front ' I. H. S.' ; a small size old silver Chalice ; a very small silver Paten, which will fit top of chalice ; a water bottle Cork with silver cross ; a very small silver Jug, Cup and Paten orna- mentally engraved, to . be carried in pocket. The above all Communion plate. Also 6 Table Spoons; a soup Ladle; 2 sauce do. ; 11 dessert Spoons; 7 large size Forks ; a small ditto ; a Mustard Pot and Spoon ; au embossed fish Slice and Foik ; a Skewer, 16 inches long ; the whole of the above silver; a plated egg Spoon; a large size ivory handled Carver ; the whole of the latter articles have crest, either a wild boar or bird with the letter ' U' under it or a griffin ; and £ 3 18s. in Money. Two men and a woman are suspected :— lst, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown curly hair, parted both sides, and appears to take great pains with his hair, is of good address, aud has s > me- what the appearance of a gentleman's servant; dressed in black cloth coat, lightish trousers, and round felt hat. 2nd, FREDRICK SAMPSON, aliases GEORGE LLOYD, FRANCIS BURING, and EDWARD WILSON, of Bed minster, Bristol, was liberated from the Convict Prison, Portsmouth, on 4th February, 1880 ; his last conviction was for burglary, at Gloucester, on 8th August, 1868, for which he was seutenc„ d to 15 years penal servitude, after several previous convictious ; he is also wanted under the Prevention of Crimes Act, for not reporting himself to the police at Bristol:— he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 2 » L inches high, fresh complexion, light hazel eyes, aud grey hair ( getting bald), blue scar on forehead, has lost part of left nostril, anchor on right arm, left arm covered with ink marks to disgui- e other marks. A photo can be obtained ou application to Chief Constable Sterne, Head Quarters Police Station, Devizes, Wilts. The woman accompanying them is about £ 8 yrs. of age, short stature, dark frizzy hair over forehead; dressed in black or very dark clothes, and black bonnet or bat. The above were inquiring the names of clergymen in the neigh- bouring villages. £ 20 reward will be paid by Mr. Supt. Dance, on recovery of the whole of the Plate, or iu propor- tion to the amount recovered, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Mr. Supt. Dance, Hindon, Wiltshire.— Bow- sireet, July 19. JAMES LEASK, alias SCOTCH JIM ( advertised in the Police Gazette of 7tli instant, charged with housebreaking at Meole Brace, Salop), lias been apprehended at Manchester and remanded on the charge ( the watch and other articles have not been recovered). In addition to the articles de- scribed as stolen, a white, blue, and red plaid Shirt, lined with calico, was also stolen. The prisoner is a native of Edinburgh. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, Shrewsbury, or to Sergeant Lear, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, Salop,— Bo'w- streef, July 16. Stolen between 11p. m., 14th, and 3" 10 a. m., 15tli inst., from a shop in Bolton :— a black cloth frock Coat, two pockets and one inside left breast, black covered buttons, and is out of repair under each arm ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fly fronts, lined with grey calico, torn a little at right pocket, has been torn a little in front of left thigh, and stitched up again, both part worn ; also about Is. worth of Coppers. Supposed by two tramps. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 16. During the night of 12th instant, a dwclling- liouse, at Rochdale, [ was broken and entered and stolen therein :— a gold lever Watch, white dial, No. 12831; a lady's gold lever Watch, No. 95734, makers—' Barnby and Rust, Hull, E. S. B.' engraved on the outside ; engraved on the inside ' Emily S. Best, presented on her 2lst Birthday'; a gold Albert Guard, twisted pattern ; a gold signet Ring, dark stone ; a ditto with figure of white dove on crimson ground ; a lady's dress Ring, dead gold, with enamelled forget- me- nots; a gold Necklet, dead gold, twisted pattern ; a gold Brooch, set with 7 cameo stones; a gold Flower, large size, with pin for head dress ; a gold Locket, small size, set with 7 stones ; a set of gold Solitaires, made of Roman coins; a silver Butter Knife, marked 1T.'; 4 do. Table Spoons, marked ' M. B.'; a do. Sugar Spoon, pearl handle ; a do. Tea Spoon, marked ' M. B.'; 2 do. Salt Spoons ; a pearl and sliver Crucifix ; an oxidised silver and garnet Neck Collar; an old- fashioned silver Chain, curl pattern, very thin ; a silver Dessert Spoon, marked. ' W. J. H.'; a do. Pickle Fork, pearl handle; 2 silver- plated Table Spoons ; 6 do. Dessert Forks, large size, marked"' H.'; 9 silver- plated Tea Spoons, beaded handles ; 2 do. Marrow Spoon ; a large Jet Cross, with black beaded Chain ; a small Ivory Cross ; a square Crystal Pendant, imitation beetle stamped tlrereon ; a gentleman's frock Coat, black ribbed cloth, faced with Italian cloth; a pair of lady's elastic side Boota, pite new; an old brown silk Umbrella, ' M. A. Dagg' stitched on tape inside ; a Meerschaum Pipe ; a silver- mounted cherry root Pipe. In- formation to the Chief Constable, Borough Police Office, Rochdale, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen between 11.30 p. m. on 10th, and 7.30 a. m. on llth instant:— a silver Figure, about 6 inches high, representing a Russian cab driver, hollow, with a small bell inside, the head and feet are the colour of gold, and fixed on a piece of Mala- chite marble; a small Basket, worked in silver filigree ; a small silver Lid belonging to an inkstand, 2| inches by 1$ in., with s* uall Candlestick attached, about lin. high ; a small gilt Key belonging to a cupboard, about llin. long ; a linen Antimacassar, about 36 inches long and 20 inches broad, with red stripes running from end to end, edged with blue, and similar stripes across each end, drab grouud, aud fringed at each end only. £ o reward will be paid by the owner for the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the property, and ( if pledged) the amount lent thereon will also be repaid. Stolen at Ashton- under- Lyne, between 6' 30 and 8 30 p m. on 12tli instant, by means of housebreaking :— a large gravv Spoon, a soup Ladle, four table 3poons, three dessert Spoons, two small Forks, two large ditto, and two sauce Ladles, all silver, crest on each— lion and anchor; two metal egg Spoons; and a lady's black cloth Jacket, double breasted, has one pocket on each side, and three stiips up the back, and sleeves worked with braid, a little braid on collar, aud black satin buttons. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING, Description of JOHN LOVERIDGE, a pikey or gipsey, charged on a warrant with stealing a Horse ( recovered) at Cudham, Kent, on 13th instant:— he is about 19 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, full face, light complexion/ little stubby beard, 2 front teeth in upper jaw very wide apart ; dressed in light cord trousers, cord waistcoat with fustian sleeves and back, which reaches to hips, and black billycock hat. Supposed to belong to Berkshire, has been some time located on a common between Newbury and Reading, which place he left with his father and mother about a month ago, lie was seen with them at Mitcham, Surrey, on 15th instant'. Information to Mr. Supt. O'Kill, Police Station, Seven- oaks, Kent, who holds the warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, July 19. 2 POLICE GAZETTE July 19 Found, and now in the possession of the Police :— two long wool Lambs. Information to Mr. Supt. Hamilton, Nor- man Cross, Peterborough, Northamptonshire. — Bow- street, July 19. Stolen on 13th instant, from Brougham Rectory, West- morland :— a light bay half bred Gelding, 3 years old, about 14J hands high, white star on face, white hind feet, and short square tail; a black set of brass mounted harness, been in use about 3 years, never repaired ; and a new white capel Cart, country made, painted black, with red and blue lines, has a broken spoke, wrapped round with tar twine, and old Cushions, covered with dark American leather. Two men, one dressed in dark clothes and the other in grey, were seen in one of the fields near the house, on the morning of 13th, and are supposed to have passed Shap on 14th, with the horse and top, going south. Information to Mr. Supt Spencer, Appleby, West- morland, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bov- street, July 16 Stolen at Beeston about 9 p. m. on 13th instant :— a Pony, aged, 13 or 14 hands high, light brown, square tail, in fair condition, lame from spavin, near side forefoot turns inwards; and Cart, painted drab with light stripes, straight splash boards, the stay on the off side grinds on the wheel, new shafts not painted ; a quantity of Herrings and Onions in the Cart. By two men, one of whom cannot be described, th< i other one appeared to be drunk, about 22 years of age, red face, no whiskers, beard or moustache; dressed in light coat, close- fitting cap, and rather rough- looking. Information to Mr. Supt. Hallam, County Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen from a field in Sheffield, on 10th instant :— a roan mare Pony, aged, 12 hands, mane cut off near the ears, scar on near hip, and in good condition. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire— Bow- street, July 14. Charged on warrant with stealing a Pony, at Tunbridge Wells, on 29th ultimo :— JAMES WALTER, 66 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, grey hair, dark eyes and complexion, stout figure ; dressed in long black cloth coat, dark trousers, and high hat, a chair and umbrellar mender ; the Pony is a bay, 5 years old, 14 hands high, and has black legs ; has a pedlar's certificate, issued at Tunbridge Wells, on 3rd May last. Information to the Head Constable, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street-, July 12. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. J. A. CAFFEY, advertised in the Police Gazette of 16th instant., has been apprehended at Market Deeping, and the Coat recovered at Caistor. Information to Mr. Supt. Jarvis, County Police Station, Grimsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, July 19. Charged on warrant with stealing a Bicycle which he hired, at Brighton, on 12th instant:— a man, WATERS, rather tall, full face, and clean shaved ; dressed in a dark green mixture suit. The Bicycle ( not recovered) 53 inches, Stanley head with very narrow neck, fork with muck rake, lock fitted spokes and painted black, picked out with gold and red stripes. G. O. Goddard's name on spring. Informa- tion to the Chief Constable, Barnden, Brighton.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen from Yaxley on 13th instant:— a brown cloth Overcoat, with a herring bone stripe, lined with black bone buttons, pockets at hips, and straps on wrists. By a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, thin pale face ; dressed in daik coat and vest, light trousers, and low hard hat; carried a stick and had the stolen Coat on his arm. Supposed to have left Peterborough by the 4' 30 p. m. train for Grantham on 14th inst. ; he had a carriage key and a pair of common Sleeve Links, stolen properly, and a pawn- ticket for a Coat, pledged at Morley's, Peterborough, on 14th. Information to Mr. Supt. Hamilton, Norman Cross, Peterborough, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, July 19. HERBERT HANBURY, charged on a warrant with larceny in January, 1877, at Cambridge, and advertised in the Police Gazette of that month, has. been apprehended, and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment.— Bow- street, July 19. ARTHUR JOHN HEAD, Sergeant- Major of the Wor- cestershire Militia, charged with stealing £ 92, and advertised in Police Gazette of 7th instant, has been apprehended. In- formation to Deputy Chief Constable Checketts, County Police Office, Worcester.— Bow street, July 19. Charged on warrant with stealing a silver lever Watch, recovered:— FREDERICK ERNEST, an electric clock maker, about 44 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, dark dundieary whiskers, turning grey, moustache, dark complexion ; is a Swiss, and speaks English imper- fectly ; he left Grimsby on 13th instant, and was then wearing a light coat and vest, dark trousers and a hard felt hat.; had some pawntickets in his possession relating to some watches which he had obtained from different persons to clean. Information to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, York- shire.— Bow- street, June 19. Description of WILLIAM AMORE, late of Maidstone, charged with stealing Tools ; he may be found applying for work as a carpenter in or near London :— he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 iuches high, stoutly built, dark complexion, slight moustache, and whiskers ; diessed when seen at Maid- stone on 12th instant, in a dark tweed suit, light lace- up boots. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 16. Absconded frcrn Coleford on 9th instant, charged with embezzlement:— JAMES WILLIAM HEARS, native of Thorn Hill, Dumfriesshire, [ agent for Wheeler and Wilson's Sewing Machine, manufacturers, Bristol; about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair ; when he absconded he had red whiskers and mous- tache, rather stout build, rather short neck, carries his head very erect and i< i fond of billiards. Information to Mr. Supt. McRae, Coleford, Glostershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 16. Description of FRANK TOWNSON, of Chalker, near Addingham, West Riding of Yorkshire, wanted on warrant, charged with obtaining £\ by false pretences, at Keighley, on 6th instant :— about 36 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, slight moustache, and whiskers down side of face, is an auctioneer or draper, twinkles right eye when talking, and burn mark under one ear ; dressed in blue cloth dress coat, single breasted vest to match, light slate- coloured trousers, black billycock hat with oval top, and elastic- side boots with blue cloth tops and white pearl buttons up front. Has been in situations in various parts of England. Information to Mr. Supt. Ireland, West Riding of Yorkshire Constabulary, Keighley,— Bow- street, July 16. Absconded from his apprenticeship, at Weston- super- Mare, on Sth instant:— MALCOLM PIKE, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, dark brown hair, very dark complexion, small fea* aies, dark eyes, rather sunken, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in brown jacket at. d vest, dark grey trousers, and black bowler hat, with very narrow brim.
