POLICE GAZETTE. & B atit& orftg. ^ CONTAINING The substance of aU Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputei Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6481 FRIDAY, JULY 1G, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is gieen, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to beiore a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and^ Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. AdTertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. < 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Charged with highway robbery, with violence, at Mar- bury, near Northwich, on 9th instant: an Irishman about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, no whiskers, full face, and pockpitted ; dressed in a long grey monkey jacket, faded, dark trousers, billycock hat and clogs ; handkerchief tied in a sailor's knot. Information to Mr. Supt. Williamson, Town Hall, Runcorn, or to Sergeant Dean, Great Budworth, near Northwich.— Bow- street, July 1G. Stolen from the person on Hereford Race Course, on 8th instant:— a silver crystal lever Watch, No. 88595, jewelled in 4 holes, gold balance, maker's name Margrett, Hereford. Information to Mr. Supt. Davies, City Police, Hereford.— Bow- street, July 12. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen between 11p. m., 14th, and 3T0 a. m., 15th inst., from a shop in Bolton :— a black cloth frock Coat, two pockets and one inside left breast, black covered buttons, and is out of repair under each arm; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fly fronts, lined with grey calico, torn a little at right pocket, has been torn a little in front of left thigh, and stitched up again, both part worn ; also about Is. worth of Coppers. Supposed by two tramps. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 16. JAMES LEASK, alias SCOTCH JIM ( advertised in the Police Gazette of 7th instant, charged with housebreaking at Meole Brace, Salop), has been apprehended at Manchester and remanded on the charge ( the watch and other articles have not been recovered). In addition to the articles de- scribed as stolen, a white, blue, and red plaid Shirt, lined with calico, was also stolen. The prisoner is a native of Edinburgh. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, Shrewsbury, or to Sergeant Lear, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen, by means of burglary, from the Vicarage, Baverstock, near Salisbury, on 9th instant:— a silver Flagon, large height and size, engraved or ornamented in front * I. H. S.'; a small size old silver Chalice ; a very small silver Paten, which will fit top of chalice ; a water bottle Cork with silver cross ; a very small silver Jug, Cup and Paten orna- mentally engraved, to . be carried in pocket. The above all Communion plate. Also 6 Table Spoons; a soup Ladle ; sauce do.; 11 [ dessert Spoons; 7 large size Forks; a small ditto; a Mustard Pot and Spoon; an embossed fish Slice and Fork; a Skewer, 16 inches long; the whole of the above silver; a plated egg Spoon; a large size ivory handled Carver; the whole of the latter articles have crest, either wild boar or bird with the letter ' U' under it or a griffin and £ 3 18s, in Money. Two men and La woman of the following description are suspected of committing the burglary at the Vicarage, at Baverstock, on the night of 9th instant :— lst. about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown curly hair, parted both sides, and appears to take great pains with his hair, is of good address, and has somewhat the appearance of a gentleman's servant; dressed in black cloth coat, lightish trousers, and round felt hat. 2nd, about 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, small whiskers, and shaves some part of his face ; dressed in short jacket, light trousers, round felt liat, and red muffler ; has the appearance of a navvy. This man is of stout build. The woman accompanying them is about 28 yrs. of age, short stature, dark frizzy hair over forehead ; dressed in black or very dark clothes, and black bonnet or hat. The above were inquiring the names of clergymen in the neigh- bouring villages. £ 20 reward will be paid by Mr. Supt. Dance, on recover)' of the whole of the Plate, or in propor- tion to the amount recovered, and conviction of the otl'ender or offenders. Information to Mr. Supt. During the night of 12th instant, a dwelling- house, at Rochdale, jwas broken and entered and stolen therein :— a gold lever Watch, white dial, No. 12831; a lady's gold lever Watch, No. 95734, makers—' Barnby and Rust, Hull, E. S. B.' engraved on the outside ; engraved on the inside ' Emily S Best, presented on her 21st Birthday'; a gold Albert Guard, twisted pattern ; a gold signet Bing, dark stone; a ditto with figure of white dove on crimson" ground ; a lady's dress Bing, dead gold, with enamelled forget- me- nots; a gold Necklet, dead gold, twisted pattern ; a gold Brooch, set with 7 cameo stones ; a gold Flower, large size, with pin for head dress ; gold Locket, small size, set with 7 stones ; a set of gold Solitaires, made of Roman coins; a silver Butter Knife, marked ' T.' j 4 do. Table Spoons, marked ' M. B.'; a do. Sugar Spoon, pearl handle ; a do. Tea Spoon, marked ' M. B.; 2 do. Salt Spoons ; a pearl and silver Crucifix ; an oxidised silver and garnet Neck Collar; an old- fashioned silver Chain, curl pattern, very thin ; a silver Dessert Spoon, marked W. J. H.'; a do. Pickle Fork, pearl handle ; 2 silver- plated Table Spoons ; 6 do. Dessert Forks, large size, marked ' H ' 9 silver- plated Tea Spoons, beaded handles; 2 do. Sauce Ladles; a silver Gravy Spoon; a do. Marrow Spoon ; a large Jet Cross, with black beaded Chain ; a small Ivory Cross ; a square Crystal Pendant, imitation beetle stamped thereon ; a gentleman's frock Coat, black ribbed cloth, faced with Italian cloth; a pair of lady's elastic- side Boots, quite new ; an old brown silk Umbrella, ' M. A. Dagg' stitched on tape inside; a Meerschaum Pipe; a silver- mounted cherry root Pipe. In- formation to the Chief Constable, Borough Police Office, Rochdale, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen between 11.30 p. m. on 10th, and 7.30 a. m. on 11th instant:— a silver Figure, about 6 inches high, representing a Russian cab driver, hollow, with a small bell inside, the head and feet are the colour of gold, and fixed on a piece of Mala- chite marble; a small Basket, worked in silver filigree ; a small silver Lid belonging to an inkstand, 2i inches by lj in., with small Candlestick attached, about lin. high ; a small gilt Key belonging to a cupboard, about liin. long ; a linen Antimacassar, about 36 inches long and 20 inches broad, with red stripes running from end to end, edged with blue, and similar stripes across each end, drab ground, and fringed at each end only. £ b reward will be paid by the owner for the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the property, and ( if pledged) the amount lent thereon will also be repaid. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street July 14. have ' Scotrick, Boston,' on the buttons of both trousers; a twill cotton Shirt, white ground with three blue stripes and one red crossed, and has been mended on one or both wrist- bands ; two silk Neckerchiefs, nearly a yard square, pattern-^ red and yellow, one very old and thin, the other good ; two pairs of knitted worsted Stockings, ribbed— one pair has been new footed, the other pair darned a little ; a long red and black woollen Scarf, checks about an inch square ; 9 German silver Tea Spoons; 4 Table ditto ; a silver Dessert Spoon, old, and much worn. The Clothes would fit a man 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, and stout build. Information to Mr. Supt. Sowden, County Police Station, Boston, Lincolnshire— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen on 3rd or 4th instant, between 9 p. m, and 9.30 a. m, by means of housebreaking :— a violet Dress, picked to pieces, and recently dyed ; a brown alpaca Skirt, trimmed with black : a pair of woman's high button Boots ; a pair of kid Gloves ; and a white lace Necktie. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellerker, Welton, or to Inspector Tripp, St. John's Wood, Hull, East Riding Constabulary, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 12. During the night of 7th instant, Standon Railway Station was broken into and stolen therein :— a pair of watertight Boots, No. 7 size, brass eyelet holes, patent steel plates on soles and heels; £\ in Gold ; lis. in Silver ; and 8d. in Copper; also stolen from Norton Bridge Railway Station, during same night small gilt Brooch, shape Staffordshire knot; a gold plated Brooch, butterfly pattern ; a jet Bracelet set in silver; a plain jet Bracelet; and 7s. in Money. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 6th instant, at ' Gunners Windlesham :— a carriage striking and repeater Clock, No. 6502, iu leather case, maker W. Boore, 54, Strand; a pair of tortoiseshell Opera Glasses ( recovered), in velvet case, ' G. Chevalier, Paris'; two Tea- pots, one with crest- hand and uagger ; a tea- pot Stand ; a tea Caddy s d Scoop ; a small soup tureen Cover and Ladle; a fish Slice, with crest and initials ' W. F. A. D. 1815'; a large gravy Spoon, crest and initials ' W. F. A. D.'; two sugar Basins, one large, and one small; two pairs of sugar Tongs ; four fish Knives^ all silver; an ormolu envelope Case, monogram ' G. L. D.'; a black morning Coat, ' G. De Lane' inside of collar, maker ' Poole & Co., Saville Row'; a Hammer ( recovered), ' G. D." on handle. Supposed by a man, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stout, thick neck, ' bully' looking, low fierce appearance, a few light whiskers, does not shave ; dressed in dark cloth coat, square corners, old light cloth trousers, too short for him, dark hard felt hat, old spring- side boots, been patched, turn down collar, and dark striped neck tie ; was seen in company with a younger man, slighter build; dressed in sleeve vest, sealskin cap, had the appearance of a rough groom. Information to Mr. Supt. Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Ckertsey.— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen at Ashton- under- Lyne, between 6' 30and 8 30 p. m. on 12th instant, by means of housebreaking :— a large gravy Spoon, a soup Ladle, four table Spoons, three dessert Spoons, two small Forks, two large ditto, and two sauce Ladles, all silver, creBt on each— lion and anchor; two metal egg Spoons; and a lady's black cloth Jacket, double breasted, has one pocket on each side, and three strips up the back, and sleeves worked with braid, a little braid on collar, and black satin buttons. Stolen by means of burglary, at Maidenhead, between 11 p. m., 11th, and 7 a. m., 12th instant:— 9 pairs of men's black calf Gloves, marked ' 2/ 9'; 6 dozen pairs of lady's coloured kid Gloves, marked ' 18|'; 3 dozen pairs of lady's black kid Gloves, marked ' 2/-'; 7 dozen pairs of lady's black kid Gloves, marked ' 1/-'; 5 dozen lady's and children's light and white kid Gloves, mixed prices, marked from ' 1/ 1 li to 3/ 3'; 3 dozen dark coloured kid mixed, marked ' 11?'; about 9 yds. of black sarsanet Lining, marked ' 7|'; 2 yards white Satin, 61 primrose Satin, 61 brown Satin, marked ' 2/ 3'; 6j black Satin, marked • 2/ 11'; 8 black Satin, marked' 1/ 11'; 18J black Silk, marked ' 3/ 11'; 9 do., marked ' 2/ 9 '; 4 black cord Silk marked' 2/ 9'; 6 cardinal Satin, marked ' 2/ 3'; 25 lengths of different coloured Satin and Silk, from 1 of a yard to 3 or 4 yard3 ; a short piece of blue Cashmere; about 30s. worth of Postage Stamps; and 19s. in Bronze Money. Information to Head Constable Austin, Maidenhead, Berkshire.— Bow- street, July 14. On 7th instant a dwelling- house, at Benington, was broken into and stolen therein :— a black cloth Coat, two pockets outside with flaps, black « overed buttons, was made by a woman, and has been worn considerably ; a black cloth Waistcoat, nearly new, bound round edges, black covered buttons ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, in good condition ; pair of black and grey mixture cloth Trousers, supposed to HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on 13th instant, from Brougham Rectory, West- morland :— a light bay half bred Gelding, 3 years old, about 14J hands high, white star on face, white hind feet, and short square tail; a black set of brass mounted harness, been in use about 3 years, never repaired; and a new white capel Cart, country made, painted black, with red and blue lines, has a broken spoke, wrapped round with tar twine, and old Cushions, covered with dark American leather. Two men, one dressed in dark clothes and the other in grey, were seen in one of the fields near the house, on the morning of 13th, and are supposed to have passed Shap on 14th, with the horse and trap, goiDg south. Information to Mr. Supt. Spencer, Appleby, West" morland, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland. — Bow- street, July 16. Stolen at Beeston about 9 p. m. on 13th instant:— a Pony' aged, 13 or 14 hands high, light brown, square tail, in fail- condition, lame from spavin, near side forefoot turns inwards; and Cart, painted drab with light stripes, straight splash boards, the stay on the off side grinds on the wheel, new shafts not painted ; a quantity of Herrings and Onions in the Cart. By two men, one of whom cannot be described, the, other one appeared to be drunk, about 22 years of age, red face, no whiskers, beard or moustache; dressed in light coat, close- fitting cap, and rather rough- looking. Information to Mr. Supt. Hallam, County Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen from a field in Sheffield, on 10th instant a roan mare Pony, aged, 12 hands, mane cut off near the ears, scar on near hip, and in good condition. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 14. Charged on warrant with stealing a Pony, at Tunbridge Wells, on 29th ultimo JAMES WALTER, 66 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, grey hair, dark eyes and complexion^ stout figure ; dressed in long black cloth coat, dark trousers, and high hat, a chair and umbrellar mender ; the Pony is a bay, 5 years old, 14 hands high, and has black legs ; has a pedlar's certificate, issued at Tunbridge Wells, on 3rd May last. Information to the Head Constable, Town Hah, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, July 12. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of WILLIAM AMORE, late of Maidstone charged with stealing Tools ; he may be found applying for work as a carpenter in or near London :— he is about 30 years 8 o POLICE GAZETTE. August 16 of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stoutly built, dark complexion, slignt moustache, and whiskers ; dressed when seen at Maid- stone on 12th instant, in a dark tweed suit, light lace- up boots. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 16. Absconded frcm Coleford on 9th instant, charged with embezzlement:— JAMES WILLIAM HEARS, native of Thorn Hill, Dumfrisshire, ; agent for Wheeler and Wilson's Sewing Machine, manufacturers, Bristol; about 35 years of acre, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair; when he absconded he had red whiskers and mous- tache, rather stout build, rather short neck, carries his head very erect, and is fond of billiards. Information to Mr. Supt. McRae, Coleford, Glostershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 16. Description of FRANK TOWNSON, of Chalker, near Addingham, West Riding ot Yorkshire, wanted on warrant, charged with obtaining ill by false pretences, at Keighley, oil 6th instant ahout 36 years cf age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, slight moustache, and whiskers down side of"' face, is an auctioneer or draper, twinkles right eye when talking, and burn mark under one ear ; dressed in blue cloth dress coat, single breasted vest to match, light slate- coloured trousers, black billycock hat with oval top,° and elastic side boots with blue cloth tops and white pearl buttons up front. Has been in situations in various parts of England. Information to Mr. Supt. Ireland, West Riding of Yorkshire Constabulary, Keighley.— Bow- street, July 16. Absconded from his apprenticeship, at Weston- super- Mare, on 5th instant :— MALCOLM PIKE, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, dark brown hair, very dark complexion, small features, dark eyes, rather sunken, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in brown jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, and black bowler hat, with very narrow brim. Charged with stealing fifteen gold and silver Watches : coat and vest, black corduroy trousers, red and black duck shirt lace- up boots and coloured neckerchief, but may now have new clothing. Speaks both English and German. Informa- tion to Mr. Chief Supt. Williams, Liverpool. - Bow- street, July 14. Detective Department, . one old gold lever, open face, gold dial and figures; one open fscsd gold, maker W. Bawden, Weston- super- Mare; one open faced gold Geneva, with gold dial; five silver English lever, two double- case hunters, and three open faced, maker W. Bawden, Weston- super- Mare ; one American lever, open faced, engraved on inside ' Examined by W. Bawden, Weston- super- Mare' ; and six open faced silver Geneva. £ 10 reward will be paid by William Bawden, his employer, to any person giving such iuformation as will lead to the apprehension of the said Malcolm Pike, and the recovery of the property stolen, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to Mr. Supt. Gillbank, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, July 16. Charged on warrant with stealing a Sovereign, at Hever, Kent, on 3rd - instant :— JANE BAKER, about 20 years of age, short and stout, fair complexion, brown hair ; dressed in a blue serge dress and jacket, dark shawl, with grey stripe; is a native of Crockham Hill, Westerham, Kent, left Eden- bridge, per S. E. Railway, at 2' 30 p. m. on 3rd instant, for London. Information to Mr. Supt. Barnes, Kent County Constabulary, Police Court, Tonbridge.— Bow- st., July 16. Stolen on 13th instant, at Upper fenn :— a white flannel Petticoat, small hole darned up in front; a pair of cashmere Hose, grey heels and toes; a brown calico Chemise, and a brown ' holland Apron. By a woman about 18 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, dark eyes, and medium build; dressed in green dress, black pelerine, trimmed with black lace, white straw hat, turned up on one side and trimmed with dark trimming, and old elastic- side boots. She lodged in the house one night, and stated she was in search of a situation as domestic servant. Infor- mation to Mr. Chief Supt. Longden, Constabulary Office, Bilston, or to Sergeant Goodall, Police Office, Sedgley, Staf- fordshire.— Bow- street, July 16. Stolen from Kirkham on 7th instant:— a pair of grey cloth Trousers; and a pair of elastic side Boots, siice recovered. By a tramp about 22 or 23 yeaj; s of age, 5 ft. 6 or 7 inches high, long ginger hair, no whiskers, dark cloth cap, grey cloth clothes, and strong lace boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Blanchard, E. R C., Norton.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen from 16, Harmer- street, Gravesend, on 12th inst. : — a lady's gold Geneva lever Watch, No. 65485, maker ' S. & Co.' Supposed by a man who went to the house and enquired the address of a tradesman of the town :— 20 to 25 years of age, medium height, dark complexion; dressed in suit of black clothes, and hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Berry, Town Hall, Gravesend.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen, at Hedon, on 12th instant:— an old fashioned German silver verge Watch, and minute hands. By a man who lodged at the house, a tramping shoemaker; he was traced to Hull, where he offered the Watch for sale ; known only by the name of ' COCKNEY,' about 35 yews of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, dark com- plexion ; dress - d in dark cloth jacket and vest, dark mixture cloth trousers, elastic side boots, have been fronted, and black stiff round hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Burniston, Sproatley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 14.. Charged with stealing on 12th instant, a shell Bodkin ; a round Bodkin ; 2 Knives ; a brass Shaver; a brass Upright; a box Cleaver ; a pair of Shears; and a pair of dressing Nippers, all of which are tools used by basket makers; also stolen at the same time, an egg and bacon Pie ;— a basket maker, Scotchman, 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout build, very red face, clean shaved, dark brown hair, marked on one side of face, as if with small pox, and is very deaf; dressed in black coat and vest, dark trousers, and blue cap, with peak, and plaid scarf. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Police Office, Middlesbrough.— Bow- street, July 14. Description of J. A. CAFFEY, charged on a wan- ant with stealing a grey mixture cloth dust Coat; a pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, with stitching across the toes ; and a woollen Guernsey, the latter recovered :— he is a man of colour, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, a very bad walker, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in Farve guernsey, grey cloth trousers, old elastic- side boots, and dark cloth cap, may be wearing the stolen coat, and carries a bag ; has been sailing out of Grimsby in a fishing smack, was formerly a soldier iu the Ashantee war, and has a medal for the same, stated he should make for London, and get back to India. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Jarvis, County Police Station, Grimsby, Lincoln- shire.— Bow- street, July 14. She was convicted at Worcester, on 23rd June, 1879, and sentenced to 3 months, and again on 13th October, and sentenced to 6 months, and 7 years supervision for felony; she is wanted again for larceny from the person.
