POLICE GAZETTE CONTAINING The substance of all Information* received in met of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and « Description of those who are not knoum, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, at accurate at possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. 6479 MONDAY, JULY 12, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the • purpose of obtaining or giving • information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE n. ay be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, pf the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor mast foe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and^ Deserters from the Militia,,. should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. ; Advertisements offfting rewards must state clearly( 1) The amount of tie reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. < 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out- any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address- or other- wise, Copies ef this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them,- sucli Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." • ' PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor" of the abolitioa of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. BREAKING INTO CHURCHES, RECTORIES, & c. The numerous cases which have recently occurred in the Home Counties of these offences, necessitate the utmost co- operation in4 bringing the delinquents to justice. The Metropolitan Police have been instructed to make sush special arrangements as are possible in suburban districts, and to communicate with Vergers and Pew Openers particularly of churches open during the day. It is believed that a man is connected with the offences who attends in the first instance as a member among the congregation. He is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, lull face, clean shaved.; dressed in black frock coat, hard felt hat . Description of JAMES ROCKET GILLINGHAM, of Marshwood, charged on a warrant with falsifying the account books to his employers he is about 34 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, good figure, dark hair and whiskers, fresh • complexion, smart appearance ; was a ganger on the London and South Western Railway about 7 years since. By a woman about 40 years of age, middle height, dark complexion, full features, stout build, pale face, and rough looking; dressed in black shawl and dress, dark straw flat bonnet, with green flower in fr nt. Stolen from the person on Hereford Race Course, on 8th instant:- a silver crystal lever Watch, No. 88595, jewelled in 4 holes, gold balance, maker's name Margrett, Hereford. Information to Mr. Supt. Davies, City Police, Hereford, , Bow- str& t, July 12. WILLIAM WILLIAMS, alias ISAAC WILLIAMS, chained with highway robbery with violence, and advertise!. in Police Gazette of ! Kh instant, has been apprehended, and the Watch and ' Cliain recovered. Information to Sergeant Williams, Monmouthshire Constabulary, Blaina. — Bow- street. July 12. Charged with assaulting and robbing Joseph Goodacre while at plough in a field, at Northorpe, near Bourn, at 2.30, on 6th instant:— 1 Shilling, a Pocket Knife with two blades and buckhorn handle, and two common watch Keys. By two men— first, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high ; dressed in dark coat and trousers, and dark low hat. 2nd, about 25| years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high ; dressed in short blue slop, light trousers, dark low hat, hair cut short, and no whiskers. Both are of dirty appearance. Information to Mr. Supt. Brown, County Police Station, Bourn lincolnshire. — Bow- street, July 9. Stolen from the person in Brighton, on 5th instant: a BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On 7th instant a dwelling- house, at Benington, was broken into and stolen therein :— a black cloth Coat, two lockets outside with flaps, black covered buttons, was made jy a wojpan, arid has been worn considerably ; a black cloth Waistcoat, nearly new, bound rouud edges, black covered buttons ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, in good condition ; a pair of black and grey mixture cloth Trousers, supposed to have ' Scotrick, Boston,' on the buttons of both trousers; a twill cotton Shirt, white ground with three blue stripes and one red crossed, and has been menried on one or both wrist- bands ; two silk Neckerchiefs, nearly a yard square, pattern red and yellow, one very old and thin, the other good ; two pairs of knitted worsted Stockings, ribbed— one pair has been new footed, the other pair darned a little ; a long red and black woollen Scarf, checks about an inch square ; 9 German silver Tea Spoons; 4 Table ditto ; a silver Dessert Spoon, old, and much worn. The Clothes would fit a man 5 feet 6 or 7 incheB high, and stout build. Information to Mr. Supt. Sowden, County Police Station, Boston, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen on 3rd or 4th instant, between 9 p. m, and 9.30 a. m. by means of housebreaking :— a violet Dress, picked to pieces, and recently dyed ; a brown alpaca Skirt, trimmed with black ; a pair of woman's high button Boots ; a pair of kid Gloves ; and a white lace Necktie. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellerker, Welton, or to Inspector Tripp, St. John's Wood, Hull, East Riding Constabulary, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 12. During the night of 7th instant, Standon Railway Station was broken into and stolen therein :— a pair of watertight Boots, No. 7 size, brass eyelet holes, patent steel plates on soles and heels; « £ l in Gold; lis. in Silver; and 8d. in Copper ; also stolen from Norton Bridge Railway Station, during same night :— a small gilt Brooch, shape Staffordshire knot; a gold plated Brooch, butterfly pattern ; a jet Bracelet set in silver ; a plain jet Bracelet; and 7s. in Money. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Crisp, Police Office, Stone, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, July 12. 1st. about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown curly hair, parted both sides, and appears to take great pains with liia hair, is of good address, and has somewhat the appearance of a gentleman's servant; dressed in black cloth coat, lightish trousers, and round felt hat. 2nd, about 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, small whiskers, and shaves some part of his face ; dressed in short jacket, light trousers, round felt hat, and red muffler; has the appearance of a navvy. This man is of stout build. The woman accompanying them is about 28 yrs. of age, short stature, dark frizzy hair over forehead ; dressed in black or very dark clothes, and black bonifet or hat. The' above were inquiring the names of clergymen in the neigh- bouring villages. Information to Mr. Supt. Dance, Hindon, Wiltshire.— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 6th instant, at ' Gunners', Windlesham :— a carriage striking and repeater Clock, No. 6502, in leather case, maker W. Boore, £ 4, St- an-!; a pair of tortoiseshell Opera Glasses ( recovered), in velvet cise, ' G. Chevalier, Paris'; two Tea pots, one with ciest— hand and dagger ; a tea- pot Stand ; a tea Caddy and Scoop ; a small soup tureen Cover and Ladle; a fish Slice, with crest and initials ' W. F. A. D. 1815'; a large gravy Spoon,, crest and initials f W. F. A. D.'; two sugar Basins, one large, and one small; two pairs of sugar Tongs ; four fish Knives, all silver; an ormolu envelope Case, monogram ' G. L. D.'; a black morning Coat, ' G. De Lane' inside of collar, maker ' Poole & Co., Saville Row'; a Hammer ( recovered V ' G. D.' on handle. Supposed by a man, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stout, thick neck, ' bully' looking, low fierce appearance, a few light whiskers, does not shave ; dressed in dark cloth coat, square corners, old light cloth trousers, too short for him, dark hard felt hat, old spring- side boots, been patched, turn down collar, and dark striped neck tie ; was seen in company with a younger man, slighter build; dressed in sleeve vest, sealskin cap, had the appearance of a rough groom. Information to Mr. Supt. Bungard, Surrey Constabulary Chertsey. - Bow- street, July 12. Stolen between 11 p. m. 5th and Sam. 6t, h instant :—• £\ 2 in Gold and Silver, from the Post Office, Dartford. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Fread, Kent County Constabulary,. Dartford.— Bow- street, July 7. Description of JAMES LEASE, alias SCOTCH JIM, charged with stealing by means of housebreaking, at Meole Brace, a silver Watch, imitation American, Waitham, No. supposed 8685, steel curb fob Chain, with common Key attached, with name ' Davies, Shrewsbury ':•— 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light hair, fresh complexion, blue eyes, no whiskers or moustache; dressed < in dark jacket, old and patched, grey vest, with silver plated livery buttons thereon, moleskin trousers, dark rough cap, coloured shirt, neckerchief white ground with dark spots, usually worn tied in sailors kiiot; has the appearance of a bricklayer! s. labourer, has been used to going with horses, stated he had worked for the Corporation of Manchester, as cart driver ; talks with a broad accent, has recently worked for farmers. Information to Mr. Supt. Howell. Salop, or to Sergeant Lear, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, who holds the warrant .- Bow- street, July 7. Stolen by means of shop- breaking, at Middlesborough, between 3rd aud 5th instant :— about 48 yards of black corded Silk, good quality, one edge re'', and the other white and blue, striped ; about 95 yards- of black corded Silk, medium quality, edge narrow white stripe, with a wide red one ; 52: yards of black corded Silk, ordinary quality ; 42 yards do. poor quality; a nutuber of silk Pocket- handkerchiefs, of- various colours ; 6 plated Table- spoons ; ' arid 4 Dessert- spoons,, of good quality. Information to. Chief Constable Saggereon, Middlesborough.— Bow- street, July 7. During the night of 5th instant, the Boat Inn, Stone, was broken into, and stolen therein :— two gallons of Brand} 1;; two gallons of Rum ; and about one gallon of - Whiskey, each was in a two gallon stone jar with wicker work round, and ' James Glover, Spirit Merchant, Longton,' printed thereon, the rum and brandy jars were both sealod, aud had neve? been opened, and that containing the whiskey was about half full. Stolen by means of burglary, at Maidenhead, between 12 30 and 6a. m. on 3rd instant:— 1 gilt Clock, wish au Artist painting represented thereon ; 1 gilt Cloak, with female figure on top; 1 nickel silver Teapot ; 1 Sewing Machine; 1 musical Box ; 6 silver dessert Spoons, plain pattern ; 6 silver dessert Spoons, fiddle pattern ; 8 German silver Teaspoons ; 2 pairs of men's Boots; 2 pairs children's Boots, button kid ; a number of gardener's Knives, Scissors, & c.; 1 white twill Mackintosh ; 1 black and white single- breasted Jacket, pockets on hip; 1 very old brown cloth Overcoat, with business cards in pocket,' J. Burdett, Nursery- man, & c.' By 3 men, two of whom are iu custody and remanded till 12th instant: one GEORGE EDWARDS, engineer, Ipswich, 45 years of <. ge, 5 feet 5J indies high without boots, bald place on crcwn of head, hair, whiskery, and moustache brown, turning grey, long thin features, grer eyes, toe nail left big toe deformed ; dressed in high hat, dark coloured trousers and vest, blue cloth pilot overcoat, velvet collar. The other HARRY HANSELL, engineer, Pershore- street, Birmingham, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high; light sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, shaved on chin, blue or grey eyes ; dressed in hard felt hat, double- breasted black eloth frock coat and vest, tweed trousers with narrow stripe Stolen, by means of burglary, from the Vicarage, Baverstook, near Salisbury, on 9th instant:— a silver Flagon, large height and size, engraved or ornamented in front ' I. H. S.'; a small size old silver Chalice ; a very small silver Paten, which will fit top of chalice ; a water bottle Cork with silver cross ; a very small silver Jug, Cup and Paten orna- mentally engraved, to . be carried in pocket. The above all Communion plate. Also 6 Table Spoons ; a soup Ladle ; 2 sauce do.; 11 dessert Spoons; 7 large size Forks; a small ditto ; a Mustard Pot and Spoon; an embossed fish Slice and Fork ; a Skewer, 16 inches long; the whole of the above silver; a plated egg Spoon; a large size ivory handled Carver; the whole of the latter articles have crest, either a wild boar or bird with the letter ' U' under it or a griffin and £ 3 in Money. Two men and a woman of the fohowinjf description are suspected of committing the burglary at the Vicarage at Baverstock, on the night of 9th instant:— runnipg from top to bottom,, low Oxford shoes, 5 soars m % 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. July 12 circle round the nipple of left breast, having the appearance of scars from burns, vaccination marks on arms. The third still at large, about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, fair hair and moustache, roman nose, marks of small- pox, rotrad shouldered ; wearing stolen mackintosh and iacket. Can be identified. Supposed to have taken train from Slough to London. Information to Mr Supt. Austin, Maidenhead, Berks.— Bows*., July 7. HORSE AnD CATTLE STEALING. Charged on warrant with stealing a Pony, at Tunbridge Wells, on 29th ultimo -.— JAMES WALTER, 66 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, grey hair, dark eyes and complexion, stout figure ; dressed in long black cloth coat, dark trousers, and high hat, a chair and umbrellar mender ; the Pony is a bay, 5 year's old, 14' hands high, and has black legs ; has a pedlar's certificate, issued at Tunbridge Wells, on 3 « d May last. Information to the Head Constable, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen on the night of 4th instant, at Kentchurch : a half- bred black Mare, 14 hands high, in good condition, long mane and tail, white spot on forehead, a few white hairs on back, just behind where saddle would come, quiet to ride and in gear. Supposed to be taken to work in coal mines. Infor- mation to Deputy Chief Constable Cope, County Police Station, Hereford, or to P. S. Phillips, Abbey Dore, near Hereford.— Bow- street, July 9. Daring the night of 7th instaut, a Sheep was slaughtered in a field, near Rushall Hall, the skin, head, and entrails were left in the field, and the carcase was taken away. Any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders shall, on such conviction, receive £ 2 reward. Information to Sergeant Arnold. Police Station, Rusball, or to Mr. Profit, 29, High- street, Walsall, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, June 9. LAECEE'Y AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on 29th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 2 12s. 3^ d.:— FREDERICK REEVES. 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light hair, and stout build; dressed in blue cloth pilot jacket, white fustian vest and trousers, black bowler hat, heavy lace- up boots, and is a farm labourer and native of Bedminster. Information to Mr. Supt. Drewett, Police Station, Flax Bourton, near Bristol, or to Acting Sergeant Ladd, Somerset Constabulary, Easton- in- Gordano, near Bristol, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen by WILLIAM GARLICK, £ 6 10s. in Gold, from Tunbridge Wells, on 5th instant :— he is a groom, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, full face, little or no whiskers ; dresssd in a new black diagonal cloth coat and vest, new elastic spring- side boots, light striped trousers, not new, black round felt hat, upright collar, and light coloured tie; i3 a native of Northamptonshire, and has a sistet in service at an Hotel iu Northampton. Information to Head Constable Embery, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen on 2nd instant, at1 Buttercramb :— an old silver lever Watch, glass out, minute hand off, but inside of case, value 10s. ; a German- silver Watch, small size( new cases, a piece broken off dial, steel curb Chain, two foreign Coins, two common Keys, and a sea Shell with a piece broken off attached, value 15s. By JAMES WOODHEAD, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, whiskers and moustache, ai, d squints ; dressed in grey coat and vest, cord trousers, strong Heed boots, and white straw hat with black band, a shoe maker, and supposed a native of Midgeley, near Halifax, but for tho last two or three mouths he has been employed as Bricklayers' labourer at Stamford Bridge, East Hieing, Yorfc. Information to Mr. Supt. Hunter, North Riding Constabulary Office, Heworth, York, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 12. Charged with stealing 2 gold Watches, a gold and an open Watch recovered, pledged at Peterbrough, in the name Thomas Williams, Willm Cottage, Sleaford; the one not recovered is a lady's gold Watch, full plate, .. No. 84197, maker's name either Briggs or Wilson, Lever :— a man about 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, military appearance, long light moustache, no whiskers, high cheek bones, and thin face ; dressed in light overcoat, and flat soft felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Leaper, Spalding, Lincolnshire.— Bow- st., July 12. Charged under a warrant with stealing a canvas tent Cover ( recovered), at Wrexham, on 3rd instant:— THOMAS JONES, alias THOMAS KNIGHT, about 28 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, a native of Ebbw Yale, Monmouthshire, a member of the Royal Denbigh and Merionethshire Militia. Information to D. C. C. Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- st., July 12. Stolen between 29th ult. and 3rd inst. at Weedon :— a Suit of black cloth clothes, not much worn ; coat, sir. gle breasted, pockets outside with flaps over them, left breast pocket inside, sleeves lined with blue and white striped lining, black cloth buttons ; waistcoat, double breas ed, lined with dark lining, cloth buttons, one missing from left side ; trousers, fly fronts, lined with unbleached calico, pockets in waist, Supposed by a tramping painter, who lodged iu the house a few nights; about CO years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, swarthy complexion, grey hair, beard and moustache, grey eyes, and has been in the army ; dressed in old dark cord trousers, dark grey coat, black billy hat, military boots, two shirts, one white and the other a blue striped one. Information to Mr. Superintendent Barwell, Police Office, Daventry, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, July 12. Charged on warrant with larceny as bailee of a gold lever Watch, on 29th June, at South Shields :— F. TAYLOR, clock and watch maker, 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stent build, long dark dundreary whiskers, stoops when walking, speaks rather quick ; dressed in a dark tweed suit, and hard felt hat. Information to Head Constable, Central Police Office, South Shields, Durham.— Bow- street July 12. Stolen at Farnborough on 9th initant:— a pair of nearly new Wellington Boots, marked ' I445/ 5/ L.' By a tramp, 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, medium build ; dressed in an old black coat, light tweed trousers, dark tweed vest, hard low felt hat, and probably wearing the stolen boots; has served in the 58th Foot, and stated he had an aunt at Northampton. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot. — Bow- street, July 12. Stolen at Sawston, Cambridgeshire, during the night of 9th instant:— a Lath Hammer, with screw through handle; a cast- iron Spirit Level, with a hook at one end; a wooden do., about 8 inches long, with brass top, in tin case ; a Line and Pins, some of the line new ; two white Slops, one has been mended in the right sleeve with dark holland. Sup- posed by a tramp, about 40 years of age, & feet 6 or 7 inches high, long sandy beard and moustache ; dressed in a soft billycock hat and dark clothes. Information to Mr. Supt. Long, Police Station, Linton, Cambs.— Bow- street, July 12. Charged with Fowl stealing:— JOSEPH GIBSON, a native of Highgate Common, near Enville, Staffordshire, 29 year3 of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, srnarf build, light hair, small light whiskers, and has lost the sight of one ( left) eye ; dressed in cord trousers, white slop, over which he wears a dark coloured jacket, and black billycock hat; is frequently employed bark peeling aud timber felling. lufonzMtioA to Inspector Gilbride, [ Tettenhall, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- itreet, Jttfy 9. Absconded on 8th ultimo, charged with embezzling £ 8 12s.
