CONTAINING Tin substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6469 FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending tho same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and tho Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be mado and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no cliargo is mado for tho insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all I< etters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and « f Absentees and " Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of tie reward. ( 2) The conditions on which iL is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accorapanicd by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom" they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." BARTER, beer retailer, White Horse, York Street, Chelsea, 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers, heard and moustache ( cut short), aud turning grey. Probably may be found at Race Meetings. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, June 14. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Description of a man, late of Dayhills, near Stone, charged with stealing Half- a- Sovereign from the person, at Dayhills, on the night of 2nd instant:- a labourer, about 21 yrs. of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 iiuhes high, pale complexion, dark hair and eyes, stout build, and a native of Leigh, near Uttoxeter, and his grandfather resides at Gratwich, Uttoxeter. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Crisp, Police Office, Stone, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, June 18. Stolen from the person, at Ascot, during the races on 10th instant :— a gold Geneva Watch, No. 73351. Informa tion to Mr. Supt. Blake, Berks Constabulary, Clewer.— Bow- street, June 14. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. In Glenluce, Wigtown, on the morning of lst instant, James Milligan, innkeeper there, was murdered, aud hi; housekeeper, Grace McCredie, w, n injured to the danger, of her life by some person or persons at present unknown. There were carried away from the premises— a gold patent lever Watch, No. 21545, and gold Chain, in three pieces, and the person or persons suspected are believed to have in their possession a Hand Saw, a Jack Plane, and a Hammer. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the discovery of the person or persons who committed the above crimes. Information to Chief Constable Murphy, Wigtown, N. B.; or to Mr. Supt. McNeil, Stranraei, N. B.— Bow- street, June 18. On 7th instant, the dead body of a female child was found in the Birmingham Canal, near Spon- lane, West Bromwich, where it appeared to have been for about a week, with marks of having been strangled with a cord before being placed in the water, and a Coroner's Jury having returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown,' a a reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person other than a police officer who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the Grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed t he murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. The child is from 2 to 3 months old, full features, dark brown hair, inclined to be curly ; dressed in an ordinary shirt, a cotton band, a linen napkin, a long grey flannel petticoat, with a herring- boned hem round the bottom, and an ordinary calico night gown, all fastened with pins, and in good condition. Information to Chief Constable Congreve, Stafford.— Bow- street, June 16. FORGERY. Charged on warrant with forgery:— JOHN CROSS WEBB, about 56 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, rather stout, stoops, and leans slightly to one side, long shaggy eye- brows, mole on end of nose, wears a stiff short beard, and moustache turning grey, and of respectable appearance. He absconded about the end of February last, and was previously in business as a manufacturer of Japan and tin goods, at Bank View Works, Hyde Road, West Gorton, near Manchester, and resided in Richmond Grove, Stockport Road, Manchester, his wife 18 now supposed to be residing at Leamington. A reward of £ 10 will be paid by Messrs Orford and Milne, Solicitors, 87, Fountain Street, Manchester, for such information as will } ead to his arrest, if effected within 3 months from this date. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen between 11 p. m. on 4th and 8 p. m. oh 15tli inst., by means of housebreaking, at Farley Cottage: — a single- breasted black ribbed serge Jacket, with pockets on hips and one inside left breast; a Vest of same material; a pair of black cloth Trousers ; and black cloth Vest; all to fit a man I and part worn ; also about in Silver and Copper Coin, including two Crown Pieces. Information to Deputy * hief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Sergeant Goodwin, Great Haywood, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, June 18. Stolen, at Horsforth, between 7 p. m. on 9th and 9 p. m. on 14th instant : 5 silver and gold Dessert Spoons, large pattern, embossed with fruits and fluted ; a silver pint Tan- kard, handles on each side ; 2 silver Table Spoons, marked ' E. G.'; 11 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' E. G.'; pair of silver Sugar Tongs ; 2 Salt Spoons ; 2 gold Lockets, one engraved on'black ' In Memory of Letitia,' and has her likeness inside, the other is a small embossed one ; a small silver Caddy Spoon ; a silver Mustard Spoon ; a silk plum- coloured Dress, trimmed with white lace. £ 10 reward will be paid on the apprehension of the thief and recovery of the property, or in proportion thereof. Supposed by three men who have been traced from the Vicarage to Netteswell Parndon, Essex, going in the direction of Waltbam Abbey :— one about 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, and sandy whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, felt hat, and lace- up boots. The other two men about 30 to 35 years of age, a. nd about 5 feet 8 ins. high ; dressed in dark clothes, felt hats, and one of them was carry- ing a bundle, and wearing very old shoes, had the appearance of mechanics. An ' Evening Standard,' of Saturday's date, was found at the Vicarage. £ 20 reward will be paid by Mr, Supt. Ryder, for the apprehension of the thieves on conviction. Information to Mr. Supt. During the night of iOth instant, an office at New Holland, was broken into and sto'en therein :— a black pilot cloth reefing Jacket, velvet collar, light twill lining, repaired at the side under left arm, one inside left breast pocket, two outside pockets, with flaps, black bone buttons, turning brjwn, about half worn ; a black cloth reefing Jacket, velvet collar, a slit under right arm, lined with l:'; ick alpaca, sleeves liued with white twill lining, four black bone buttons down front, much worn. Supposed by a man between 30 and 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high ; dressed in close fitting cap, brown coat, dirty light trousers ; lie carried a sack or ''. ar* whs'., appeared 1, '-,-. i.--" rr to Inspector Ward, Barton- on- Humber Lincolnshire.— Bow- st., June 10. On llth instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Baker, Adversane, Billingshurst, was entered, and stolen therein :— a small silver foreign Coin ; a copper foreign Coin ; a gold wedding Ring, broken ; and a small Picture of a little girl. Supposed by two tramps, one 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, full face ; dressed in a dark suit of clothes, wearing a cap with a leather strap across the front, with a brass button on each side ; the other 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, long thin nose and face ,•" dressed in a monkey jacket, white slop under, and black felt hat, appears like a German bandsman. They are carrying a round can, used by them for heating water, also a white basket ; gone in the direction of East Sussex and Kent. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, Jum 16. During the night of llth instant, the County Court Offices at Wrexham were broken into and stolen therein :— 13s. 4d. in Silver and Copper, also a silver lever Watch, No. 1019, maker Griffiths, Llanrwst. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- st., June 16, Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Hco, Kent, on 13th instant :— a silver lever hunting Watch, Make Col ins, No. 5219. Information to Mr. Supt, Coppinger, Kent Consta- bulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, June 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking from a cottage in Munsley- lane, near Ledbury, between 10 a. m. and 1 p. m. on 10th instant: a double case Watch, german- silver cases, name Stephen Pitt' inside of case, steel chain with two common seals attached, supposed to have inside cases several papers with the names of ' Berkley and Allgood, Ledbury,' where the watch has previously been repaired. Information to Mr. Supt. Blunsdon, Ledbury, Herefordshire,— Bow- street, June 14. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Great Blackenham between 2 pm. and 3 p. m. 6th instant supposed by 2 tramps one a middle aged man, with stum,,, - beard ; the other a younger man, with cord trousers, mended with piece of dark stuff in front :— 2 Watches, one good old silver cased, supposed No. 71166 ; brass Pin in bow, with brass Guard attached; the other an old brass Watch, key hole on face ; also - 5 Shill- ings in Copper, with a few French Pennies amongst them. Information to Mr. Supt. Fisher, Ipswich.— Bow- street, June 14. Between 12 30 and 1' 40 p. m. 10th instant, a dwelling- house was broken into, and stolen therefrom, at Okeley, near Market Drayton :— a Sovereign ; two Half- crowns; and two Sixpences. Two tramps suspected :— one about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, stout build; dressed in dark pilot jacket, light trousers, sammy hat, and lace- up boots ; the other about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build ; dressed in long dark coat, light trousers, cap, and lace- up boots. Both supposed forgemen. Informa- tion to Sergeant Hall, Police Station, Ashley, near Market Drayton, Salop.— Bow- street, June 14. Stolen by means of burglary, at Bentley Hall, Suffolk, during the night of 8th instant, or morning of 9th instant:— a mahogany Box, with a dozen steel Knives and Forks, ivory handles ; Lid and Plate of butter dish, silver, cow on the top of lid ; silver cream Jug and sugar Basin ; a pair of silver Salt- spoons, gold colour inside; 4 silver Tea- spoons, marked 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T TE June 18 - with ' K' on handle ; a silver Dessert- spoon ; an electro Dessert- spoon ; and a silver Mustard- spoon ; 4 elects Dinner- forks ; and electro plated Trowel, inscription on it' Presented to Thomas Keeble, Esq., by the Trustees of the Chelmondiston Wesleyan Chapel, 4th September, 1879 2 silver Thimbles ; 3 pairs of Scissors.; about a dozen brass Buttons, uniform, marked ' Worcester' - with an anchor ; 4 Overcoats, one black, one bine cloth, with velvet collar, one light coloured old coat, very thick and heavy, the other a very old thin light dust overcoat; and a black felt Hat, with flat crown ; also a solid silver butter Knife. During the night of 2nd instant, a dwelling- house . at Maidsmoreton was burglariously entered and stolen therein : - 17 Table Spoons, 24 Dessert ditto, 25 Tea ditto, 2 Gravy1 ditto, 7 Salt ditto, some with crest— three arrows through a crown, others with the letters ' H. H., W. A., C. P.'; 18 large Forks and 24 small ditto, some with crest— a lion rampant, others with the letter ' U.' ; 1 Waiter ; 1 Sugar Sifter, lined with gold; 1 pair Sugar Tongs, 1 pair Asparagus Tongs; 1 Soup Ladle, with crest— a star ; 2 round Salt Cellars, with three legs, and the words ' A Trifle from a Friend' on the bottom, all silver. Three .- 65 Bank of England Notes, £ 15 in Gold, about 10s. in Silver, and a Money Bag, marked < G. E. R.' Supposed by two men, who left Bletchley Station by the 7' 5 a. m. train on 3rd instant, taking 2ud class tickets for Euston- station : one is from 30 or 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, full face, and small thin sandy whiskers ; dressed iti a light speckled top coat and high black hat; the other is from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, very large black curly whiskers, hollow cheeks, mllen appear- ance, and thick lips ; dressed in a long black top coat, dark trousers, and high black hat. 6 gold Seals, five of them on a chased gold riug - a very large Seal with dark green stone, crest a stag's head ; a email ditto with white stone, crest a stag's head ; a ditto with violet coloured stone, with letters ' M. H. T. H. A. A.' ; a ditto with a red stone, with the setting sun; a ditto with ditto and the word ' Pais'; a ditto, colour of stone not known, has the crest of three arrows drawn through a ducal coronet, were also stolen at the same time and place. Information to Mr. Supt. Shepherd, Police Station, Steeple Claydon, Wiuslow; or to Inspector Ray, Maidsmoreton, Buckinghamshire.— Bow- street, June 14. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING*. Supposed stolen on 10th instant, from a field at the Pheasey Farm, Great Barr :— a black cob Horse, 14J har. ds high, rough mane, short thick tail, recently blistered on hind legs, and in good condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, Police Office, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, or to P. C. Given, Police Station, Great Barr, near Birmingham.— Bo'JS- , June 18. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of JAMES DURRAN, alias JAMES STACEY, alias JAMES HOPKINS, charged with larceny of a Watch, as bailee, on 7th instant, at Stafford :— 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, bald on top of head, large sandy moustache, no whiskers, dark eyes, stout build-, a tramping watch and clock cleaner, and native of Northamptonshire ; dressed in a dark small ribbed cloth jacket, dark grey large plaid trousers and vest, tall black hard billycock hat with flat cro wn, dark necktie, turned- down reaper collar,' and old elastic- side boots. He took out a peddler's certificate at Shiford ou 20th ultimo, in the name of James Hopkins. He pledged the Watch taken from Stafford at W. Hampton's, en 7th instant, and another Watch McWilliams, City of Loudon Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, June 16. Stolen at Broug.. on- road, Neithrop, Banbury, on the morning of 14th instant:— a dark grey waterproof Overcoat, of thin material; a light brown tweed Jacket, straight back, with pockets in front ; a leather letter Case; and a yellow silk pocket Handkerchief. Supposed by a tramp from 20 to 30 years of age, supposed to be about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes. £ 5 reward is offered by the Banbury General Association for the Prosecution of Felons for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Mr. Supt. Cope, County Police Station, Banbury, Oxfordshire.— Bow- street, June 10. Charged with stealing £ 8 in Gold :— a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slender make, pale complexion, long face, ; full eyes, light brown hair, slight light whiskers and moustache, hooked nose ; dressed in a brown mixture tweed jacket, grey trouseis, and low black felt hat; supposed an ironmonger, native of Leeds or West Hartlepool. This mair visits manufacturers, gives large oiders for goods, and after leaving returns in a few minutes, says he has lost his puree, and borrow a few shillings to carry him home, information to the Chief Constable, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, June 16. Absconded, charged with stealing Sheepskins ( recovered) : — 2 men, one about 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender make, dark complexion and hair, . sti- ong dark mous- tache mixed with grey, aud whiskers apparently of about three weeks or a month's growth also mixed with grey ; dressed in a much faded dark grey tweed coat, old dark tweed trousers, much patched, strong boots, much worn, cloth cap with leather peak ; the other about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout make, fresh complexion, brown hair, thin fair or sandy whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin ; dressed in faded grey tweed coat,. and either dirty white moleskin or light grey tweed trousers and cap. They are travelling the country under the pretence of buying lags, and sheep- skins, and sometimes do buy. They frequent common lodging houses. Information to Chief Constable Jones, County Buildings, Dumfries. - Bow- street, June 16. Stolen at Miles Platting, between 1 a. m. and 8 a. m. on 13th instant:-- 1 pair of men's fustian cord Trousers, and a Vest of same material, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, both lined with twill calico, white bone buttons, both new ; 1 pair men's elastic- side Boots, with toecaps, one row of round black buttons up front, far worn ; 2 pairs of lady's elastic- side Boots, plain block fronts, part worn ; 1 pair boy's elastic- side Boots, far worn ; 1 youth's black cloth Jacket, part worn, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, lined with Italian cloth, black bone buttons. Stolen at Davyhulme, between 7 p. m. 10th, and 6 a. m. 12th instant :— a lady's black French merino Skirt, with frill round the bottom, part worn ; 1 child's black and white plaid Frock, short sleeves, and grey calico lining'; 1 child's red, black, and green plaid woollen princess Robe, lined with grey calico, trimmed with black velvet, white buttons down front. All the above- named articles are part worn. Supposed by ELIZABETH EVANS, maiden name STEEPLES, who lodged in the house 2 nights, and left about 10 a. m. 11th instant:— about 38 years of age, dark brown hair, fresh complexion, 5 feet 2 inches high ; dressed in an old dark green alpaca dress, short black cloth jacket, elastic- side boots, and black hat, with artifical cherries in front. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, June 16. 7 or 8 inches high, sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, a labourer; dressed in short brown jacket, and brown cap, with peak. Information at Chief Constable's Office, or to Mr. Supt Osbon, Lewes, Sussex.— Bow- street, June 14. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED • MISDEMEANOURS. at Porter's pawnshop, 27 Charged with obtaining on 11th instant, a Gun, by- means of a false cheque, for £ i 16a., drawn upon Cocks, Biddulpli, and Co., Charing Cross, in favour of Charles Gooch, gunsmith, Hertford, ( written upon a half sheet of note pap r), which upon being presented, was returned marked ' No Account':— C.
