CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in ease* of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, a* accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horse* for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 644G MONDAY, APRIL 26, 1880. Notice.— It is requested lhat all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear tSie Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Same is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must foe^ prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. ' The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and* Deseyters from the Militia, should, be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) Tho conditions on which it is payable. < 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for llie return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once . returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTIIOPvITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of xhe " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 8th instant, the dead body of a newly Male Child, • was found, naked in a field, at the Khoss, Killybebill, it had a harelip, at the Coroner's Inquest held on the body, the Jury returned a Verdict of ' Wilful Murder, against some person or persons unknown.' Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Hewlett, Neath, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, April 23. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Between 8 and 9 p. m. on 18th instant, Ashdown Forest, Buxted, Sussex, was set on fire, and several acres of Heath, Furze, and Shrubs, were destroyed :—£ W reward will be given for such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, on applying to Mr. Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, or to Mr. Superintendent Berry, East Grinsted, Sussex.— Bow- street, April 20. FORGERY. Charged on warrant with forgery, at Chester: — WILLIAM HENRY SMITH, agent to a money lender, 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair com- plexion, light brown hair, light moustache, has a deformed shoulder, which gives him the appearance of having a short neck ; dresses well, a native of the West of England. Infor- mation to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, April 21. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person, in Beverley, on 24th instant:— a Purse containing about £ 1 10s. By a man, about 23 years of a" e, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, thin build, pale complexion, no whiskers or m oustache; dressed in long black coat, buttoned up to neck, black felt hat, dark cloth trousers, had the appearance of a clerk. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Knight, Guildhall, Beverley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 26. Stolen from the person rat Croxton Park Races, on 8th instant :— a gold lever Watch, plain back, engraved on inside plate, ' Presented to Brother Henry Blackburn by the National Arms Lodge, Delph Saddleworth, for service rendered,' maker's name, Simmonds, St. Ann's Square, . Manchester. £ 5 reward will be paid for information that will lead to the conviction of the thief and recovery of the Watch. Stolen on 24th instant, from Hartshorn- street, Bilston : — 2 gold lever Wratches ; a double link gold Neck Chain attached to both Watch - s ; a Ham 201b. weight; a black cloth frock Coat, pockets behind, one inside left breast, trousers an! vest to match; a black cloth Overcoat, velvet collar, pockets rn hips, one inside left breast, ticket pocket light side ; a light- coloured summer Overcoat, pockets on hips, one inside left breast ; and about. 30s. worth of old Penny Pieces. Information to Chief Superintendent Longden, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- strea, April 26. Stolen between 3' 30 and 4 p. m. 25th instant, at Oxford : — a lady's gold Geneva Watch, makers Collins and Wallace, and attached a black beaded Guard ; a gold Necklet, with gold Locket, photo of a boy inside; a gold Locket, with lady's phi. to inside ; a gold Brooch, serpent shape, set with two small diamonds, and a red stone in centre ; a gold Brooch, set with cameo ; a silver Brooch, yellow stone in centre ; two sets of gold Studs; a set of gold Links ; a lady's gold Ring, set with one or two diamonds, a red stone and pearls ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, oval shape, with drop hanging in centre ; and some silver Money. By a man about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, and thick ( almost black) whiskers, rather stout build; dressed in dark pilot jacket, dark trousers, heavy nailed boots, three rows of nails in centre, centre row longest, and four nails top of that row, and a soft billycock hat, rather high in crown, with wide band, and turned up at sides ; appearance of an American. Information to Mr. Superintendent Head, Oxford.— Bow- street, April 26. Stolen on 20th instant, at Wellington :— 2 white wool Antimacassars ; 1 coloured wool Antimacassar, two dark blue stripes, and one pale stripe dowu middle, and fastened together with yellow wool; 1 brown mixture dress Piece, about 30 yards, home spun ; 2 bottles of Claret, and 2 bottles of Port, corks in the bottles marked ' James Clegg Smith.' Information to Chief Superintendent Ivins, Wellington, Salop. — Bow- street, April 23. During the night of 19th instant, the house of the Rev. H. Fox, Strangways, rector of Silverton, was burglariously entered, and stolen therein :— a Kettle- stand ; a Mustard- pot ; 4 Salt Spoons ; a Soup Ladle ; a Mustard Spoon ; a Top of Mustard- pot; a Toast Rack; a pair of Sugar Tongs ; 2 Sugar Ladles; 2 Candlesticks, square bottoms, about 9 inches high, all silver and marked with crest, either Fox or Hand and Dagger. Suspicion attaches to three men who got out of the up- train at Silverton Station about 8 p. m., having taken their tickets at St. David's, Exeter :—• 1st, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sandy hair, clean shaved, two or three days growth of sandy beard, lost several teeth, bald on the top of head, very sharp nose, snuff- coloured overcoat, and hard flat crown hat. 2ud, from 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, and stoutish build ; dressed in overcoat, cleau shaved, large nose, hard- lookiug features, felt hat, flat crown, and has the appearance of a North Country man. 3ru, of Jewish appearance, about 30 to 05 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed iu dark clothes, and round poll hard hat. This man carried a, black leather Bag ( which appeared to be heavy) on liis leaving the Silverton Station. Information to Mr. Superintendent Collins, Devon Consta- bulary, Cullompton.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen at Bray on 19th instant :— a Loudon and County Bank Book, about 20 Half Sovereigns, 200 Farthings, a number of old thin Sixpeuces, a number of old Halfpence, and about £ 5 in Silver. Supposed by a tramp,. about 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 iuches high, dark brown hair, whiskers of about a month's growth, and of stuttering speech ; dressed in old dark suit of clothes, and billycock hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead, Berks.— Bow- street, April- 2\. Stolen by means of burglary on 19 th instant, at Wey- bridge : a French Ormolu Clock, about 12 inches high, and 8 iuches wide, maker, Raingeau, Paris ; a dark blue Overcoat, velvet collar; a dark tweed Mackintosh ; a twill Bilk Umbrella ; an opera Glass ; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' S.'; a silver tea caddy Spoon ; a silver mustard Spoon ; and a small brown leather Bag. Information to Mr. Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, April 21. and rather large feet. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary, Heworth, or to Inspector Wright, Police Station, Easingwold.— Bow- street, April 26. Stolen on 21st instant, from Grove Green Lane, Leytonstone :— a grey Russian entire Pony, 12 hands high, aged, hog mane, long tail, saddlemarked ; by two men, who were driving a small brown horse, and light cart, and had the appearance of costermongers. Information to the Director, C. I. D. Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 26, Stolen on or about the 14th instant, from Freddfawr farm, Cemmes, the property of Mr. E. Breese. :- r2 chestnut entire Horses, one 1 year old, about 12 hands high, the other 2 years old, white blaze down face, about 12 hands high ; and 1 iron grey Filly, 3 years old, about 14 hands high, she has a lump oi. one of forelegs above the fetlock, from being fastened in a wire fence. Information to Chief Constable Danily, Newtown, or to P. C. Humphreys, Cemmes, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow- street, April 26. JAMES RUDGE, the convict license- holder charged with stealing sixty fat Sheep from Ross on 5th March, and advertised in the Police Gazette of 10th March last and subsequent dates, has been apprehended at Col wall, near Malvern, and is now in custody and remanded at Ross. The other man wanted and advertised with Rudge is still at large. Information to Mr. Superintendent Smith, ROBS, Hereford- shire.— Bow- stree', April 26. Absconded from Knowstone, Devon, oil 13th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing an Ass, Cart, and Harness. also a pair of Boots ( all recovered) :— WILLIAM PERKINS, a shoemaker, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, crippled in right leg, sole and heel of right boot 3 inches thick, cannot walk without crutch or stick dressed jn dark grey cloth coat, recently fresh braided ron* d the cuffs with black Jj « feid, brown cloth vest with lilaclr 1" .. ..„ eves, dark cloth trousers, new black round poll hat, and lace- up boots. Supposed gone to South Wales. Information to Mr,' Super- intendent Wood, B Division, Devon" Constabulary, South Molton, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 26. Stolen at Ivingswinford, on the night of 14th instant :— a browu nag Mare, five years old, 15 hands high, black legs, bang tail, and in rather low condition. Information to Mr. Superintendent Woollaston, Brierley Hill, or to Sergeant Moore, Police Station, Brettell Lane, Staffordshire.— Bow- st. April 23. During the night of 15tli instant, a dwelling house at Moseley, was broken aud entered, and stolen therein :— a chocolate and drab ( Chipping Norton tweed) Coat and Vest, man's size, new, single breasted, pockets on hips, wi, th flaps, a do. outside left breast, a do. inside right, and 2 game do. ; a pair of man's small size watertight Boots, with brass eyelets, and hooks, tips on toes and heels, no uails ; and a, bout 6 or 7 Shillings in Silver and Bronze. The thief is no doubt is wearing the stolen Boots, having left an old pair behind, Information to Mr. Superintendent Tyler, Kings Heatli, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, April 21. Stolen, from Newnham Baston, Chulinleigb, Devon, on 21. st February last:— a roau coloured Mare, aged, about 16 bands high, white streak down face, white legs, little lame m one of hind legs. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wood, Devon Constabulary. South Molton.— Bow- st., A'pril 23. Absconded from Knowstone, on 13th iust., charged with stealing an Ass, Cart, & c., recovered:— a shoemaker, about 20 yrs. of age, about 5 feet ins. high, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, crippled in right leg, sole and heel of right boot 3 inches thick, and cannot walk without crutch or stick ; ( iressed in dark grey cloth coat, recently braided round the cuffs, with black braid, brown cloth vest-, with black alpaca sleeves, dark cloth trousers, new black round poll hat, and lace- up boots ; supposed gone to South Wales. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Wood, B. Division, Devon Constabulary, South Melton, Devon.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen between 11th and 14th ultimo, from Leytcm. Marshes, Leyton :— a black Horse, 13^ hands, star on fore- head and near feet white, short tail." Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 23. Stolen between 18th and 20th instant, from a field in Stamford :— five lamb Hogs, in good condition, each haviiiga faint red paint mark ou the back ; the property of Mr. Benj. Frisby. £ 4 reward for such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Head Constable Ward, Stamford, Lincolnshire.— Bow- st., April 23: Description of GEORGE ROBINS, alias COCK ROBIN, labourer, charged with stealing a Horse, Cart, and Harness, from Cheltenham, in January last, since recovered:— he is about 33 years of ag<^ 6 feet 2jt inches high, dark complexion, dark hair aud eyes ; generally dressed in cord trousers, white slop, and black billy- cock hat, and was accompanied by a woman he calls ' Annie,' she is about 27 years of age, 5 " feet 1 inch high, fresh complexion, and dark hair. Information to Mr. Superintendent Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street. April 21. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. • Stolen at Aldwark, during the night of 21st instant c— a dark brown hack Horse, four years old, about 15 bands 3 inches high, switch tail, is iii fair good working condition, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen ou 12th instant at Peterboro':— a pair of Boots, a milk Can, a dripping Tin, a Cola;: ler, a flat Iron, an iron Ringstand, a linsey Dress, and a Marden Apron. By THOS. PHILLIPS, labourer, late of Easton, Northamptonshire, ? 5 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair and moustache, small dark whiskers, dark eyes, and sallow complexion ; dressed in a long blue pilot jacket! dark cord or dark mixture trousers, and soft black billycock bat. He has served in 34th Regiment of Foot, and now belongs to the Army Reserve, " information to Inspector 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. April 19 Scotney, Liberty Constabulary Station, Peterborough, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bom- street, April 26. Stolen, on 22nd instant, from a tobacconist in. Oxford' 10s. By a man who entered the shop and asked for change for a Half- Sovereign ; on the 10s. of silver being placed on the counter he took it up, put down a new farthing, aud absconded ; 25 years of age, short and rather stout, fair com- plexion, hair, beard, and slight moustache ; dressed in a black coat, hard black felt hat, and of respectable appeaivuce. Information to Mr. Superintendent Head, Police Office, Oxford.— Bow- street, April 20. Stolen at Gorton, between 6 a. m. and 12.30 p. m. 21st instant:— a gent's, dark tweed cloth monkey Jacket, two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, speckled buttons, also a Vest to match ; a pair of brown mixture tweed cloth Trousers; a lady's black cloth Jacket, trimmed with black silk ; a lady's navy blue Princess Robe, trimmed with blue fringe, with Skirt to match'; a lady's red felt Skirt, with black band round the bottom; a pair of gent's, elastic- side Boots, with toe caps, and buttons ; supposed by a mar., about 30 years of age, 5 feat 6 inches high, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in blue cloth coat, light coloured trousers, and black billy- cock hat. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, April 26. Stolen at Linton- on- Ouse, during the night of 19th inst. : — a long blue witney top Coat, double breasted, velvet collar, black bone buttons, two pockets outside and one inside, has been torn between tie shoulders and repaired, black lining ; also a jean Jacket, metal buttons, second one missing, two pockets outside ; and about 2 lbs. of Horse Hair. By a man from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair and whiskers and moustache, and stoutish build ; dressed in stolen coat and jean jacket under- neath, cord vest with brass buttons, old greasy cord trousers, with large patch of woollen cord ou both knees, light laced boots with toe caps, and soft billycock hat. He speaks with a South country accent, and has the appearance of a tramp. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary, Heworth, or to Inspector Wright, Police Station, Easingwold.— Bow- street, April 26. Description of a tramping brickyard labourer, charged with stealing Tools ( recovered) :— about 26 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, thin face, pug nose, light complexion, aud few sandy whiskers; dressed iu dark pilot jacket, patched on shoulder, dirty cord trousers, strapped below the knee, twill slop, blue checked cotton shirt, scarf with red border, blue spots tied in front, and ends tucked under the braces, heavy lace- up boots, and fur cap, with peak, and button on top. He was traced into Brighton ou 18th instant, and was then carrying a bundle in blue handkerchief ou a shovel. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Silvester, Police Station, Worthing, Sussex.— Bow- street, April 23. Description of RICHARD LEVETT, alias AFLRED NOBURY, a native of Hull, paintei and paper hanger, wanted by warrant for stealing a gold Eye Glass, recovered, on 14th instant, at Clifton :— 37 years of age, but looks older, 5 feet 7 inches high, grey hait, long dark heavy moustache, sallow complexion, small spot, which frequently discharges, on the Bide of nose, near the corner of supposed right eye, and has an impediment in Ids speech ; dressed in an old dark mixture cloth coat, old light grey cloth trousers, crimson tie, hard low crowned felt hat, nearly new, old boots, and dirty appearance. He has been convicted of felony at Hull, and supposed at Bradford, he is fond of drink, and is likely to be found in some- low public or comm- ii lodging house. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hunter, North Ridiug Constabulary Office, Heworth, Yorkshire.— Boto- st., April 23. Description of ALFRED COLLINS, alias ALFRED BOWDEN, alias BOXER BOWDEN, charged on a warrant with stealing a silver Watch, ( recovered, pledged by him iu Newport, in the name of'John Lewis') also a white silk Handkerchief with blue border ; a small brass tobacco Box. clasp— book pattern, aud a pair of blue coloured worsted Stockings, white tops and toes, at North Risca, on 3rd February, 1880 :— about 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 0 inches high, rather broad shoulders, fair complexion, clean shaved, small dark moustache, has a lump about, the size of a waluut under the right ear, large scar ou top of forehead, a stab mark inside left forearm, tattooed supposed with letter ' A. R.' on one or both arms, is well acquainted with Bristol, where his wife and child is supposed to be living ; he stated when at North Risca,. that he knew Treasure Garland, a collier, at Oaky- Welsh- street, Dudley, Billy Hard Head, collier, Twidale, near Brown Lion, Oldbury, and stated that he had sold horses there ; he was dressed in a pilot cloth jacket, brown plaid cloth trousers and vest, elastic- side boots, and black soft bowler hat. Information to Captain Foll, Consta- bulary Office, Tredegar, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 23. Description of CHARLES GALE, a baker, wauted on a charge of stealing £ 54 :— 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, lair complexion, light brown hair, wniskers and mous- tache, inclined to be sandy, grey or blue eyes, rather high forehead, and rather bald on top of head. Information to Chief Constable Poyntz, Nottingham.— Bow- street, April 23. Description of a man named KERVELL, charged on warrant with stealing, on 12th instant, 12s., from a public house in Brighton, where he had been lodgiug :— about 27 years of age, about 5 feet 5 iuches high, rough long black curly hair, swarthy complexion, no moustache, has lost a front tooth ; shabbily dressed, wears a black deerstalker hat, with mourning baud, will seek employment at theatres as dresser, or similar occupation, known at theatres iu Portsmouth. Information to Chief Constable Barnden, Brighton. — Bow- street, April 23. Absconded from High Wycombe, on 15th instant :— WILLIAM HAMELIN BAKER, charged with larceny, trade a gunsmith, from 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather stout figure, dark hair and eyes, dark complexion, round full face, cleau shaved; dressed in Mack hard felt hat, and light grey tweed suit. Is fond of talking about pigeon shooting matches, and has risided a considerable time in Brighton aud Reading. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Collius, Borough Police, High Wycombe, Bucks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 21. Charged with stealing carpenter's Tools, at Coseley, on 6th instant :— a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light sandy hair, large moustache, no whiskers, rather long face, fresh complexion, medium build ; dressed in old dirty black jacket, dark vest with grey stripes, moleskin trousers, cap with peak of same material and button on top, lace- up boots, rather strong ; by trade an underhand puddler or labourer. Will probably be found sleeping in cabins or ash- holes at ironworks or collieries. Information to Chief Superintendent Longdon, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, April 21. } r Absconded from Longton, on 15th instant, charged on warrant with embezzlement: — CHARLES EVANS, 19 yrs. of age, 5 feet 0 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, slender build, prominent nose; a gas meter inspector ; dressed in blue cloth jacket, mixture trousers, lace- up boots, and hard black tommy hat. Iuformation to Mr. Superintendent McWilliams, Longton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 21. Stolen about 7.30 a. m. on 15th instant, at Stockport — a lady's dark tweed Ulster, double tippet, bone buttons, pockets at sides ; a lady's drab coloured Ulster, 3 plaits down each side of back, bone buttons to match, bottom button but one off, buttons on cuffs, round collar, points on shoulder, lias the name ' Chatterton Hillgate, Stockport,' under looo iuside. neck ; a lady's tweed plaid Ulster, has a small tear which has been patched by placing a piece over it inside, round collar, bone buttons, all part worn ; a Shawl, recovered ; a man's white calico Shirt, iron- mould round shoulders. By a man who pledged the Shawl, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 iuches high, fresh complexion, brown aud slight whiskers, down side of cheeks, stoutish build ; dressed in dark brown overcoat, brown tweed trousers, light shoes, round hard felt hat, wears collar and tie, and of respectable appearance. Information to Borough Police Office, Stockport.— Bow- street, April 21. Description of FREDERICK GRIFFIN, of Stonesfield.
