POLICE GAZETTE. - CONTAINING The substance of all Information* received in eate* of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horse* for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6445 FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed lo the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is gipen, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, ef the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressod to tho Editor enlist be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from tho Army, and « f Absentees and ^ Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 83 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( I) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding lhem. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. Also stolen at the Railway Station, Stone, at 7' 25 p. m. same date :— a new American Waltham silver lever Watcb, broken at ring, fiat glass, opens at back without a spring. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering tiie supply of ihe " Police Gazette" no longer necessary, INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 8th instant, the dead body of a newly Male Child, was found, naked in a field, at the Khoss, Killybebill, it had a harelip, at the Coroner's Inquest held on tlie body, the Jury returned a Verdict of ' Wilful Murder, against some person or persons unknown.' Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Howlett, Neath, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, April 23. FORGERY. Charged on warrant with forgery, at Chester: — WILLIAM HENRY SMITH, agent to a money lender, 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair com- plexion, light brown hair, light moustache, has a deformed shoulder, which gives him the appearance of having a short neck ; dresses well, a native of the West of England. Infor- mation to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, April 21. Absconded on 8th instant, charged with forgery:— LEONARD BRISLEY, 20 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build, light complexion and hair, small light whiskers ( inclined to sandy) chin and upper lip clean shaved ; dressed in black frock overcoat, black walking coat under, light tweed vest and trousers, side- spring boots ( nearly new), and a soft quilted cloth hat, brown and drab mixture ; carrying a new light mackintosh, and a black leather port- manteau, studded with brass nails, and place on top for insertion of name and address. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Bow- street, April 19. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen on 20th instant, at Wellington :— 2 white wool Antimacassars ; 1 coloured wool Antimacassar, two dark blue stripes, and one pale stripe down middle, and fastened together with yellow wool; 1 brown mixture dress Piece, about 30 yards, home spun ; 2 bottles of Claret, and 2 bottles oE Port, corks in the bottles marked ' James Clegg Smith.' Information to Chief Superintendent Ivins, Wellington, Salop. — Bow- street, April 23. During the night of 19th instant, the house of the Rev. H. Fox, Strangways, rector of Silverton, was burglariously entered, and stolen therein :— a Kettle- stand ; a Mustard- pot ; 4 Salt Spoons; a Soup Ladle ; a Mustard Spoon ; a Top of Mustard- pot; a Toast Rack; a pair of Sugar Tongs ; 2 Sugar Ladles; 2 Candlesticks, square bottoms, about 9 inches high, all silver and marked with crest, either Fox or Hand and Dagger. Suspicion attaches to three men who got out of the up- train- at Silverton Station about 8 p. m., having taken their tickets at St. David's, Exeter :—- lst, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sandy hair, clean shaved, two or three days growth of sandy beard, lost several teeth, bald on the top of head, very sharp nose, snuff- coloured overcoat, and hard flat crown hat. 2nd, from 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, and stoutish build ; dressed in overcoat, clean shaved, large nose, hard- looking features, felt hat, flat crown, aud has the appearance of a North Country man. 3rd, of Jewish appearance, about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feat 8 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, and round poll hard hat. This man carried a black leather Bag ( which appeared to be heavy) on his leaving the Silverton Station. Information to Mr. Superintendent Collins, Devon Consta- bulary, Cullompton.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen at Bray on 19th instant :— a London and County Bank Book, about 20 Half Sovereigns,' 200 Farthings, a number of old thin Sixpences, a number of old Halfpence, and about £•> in Silver. Supposed by a tramp, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown hair, whiskers of about a month's growth, and of stuttering speech ; dressed in old dark suit of clothes, and billycock hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead, Berks.— Bow- street, April 21. Stolen by means of burglary on 19th instant, at Wey- bridge : a French Ormolu Clock, about 12 inches high, aud 8 inches wide, maker Raingeau, Paris ; a dark blue Overcoat, velvet collir; a dark tweed Mackintosh ; a twill silk Umbrella ; an opera Glass ; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' S.' ; a silver tea caddy Spoon ; a silver mustard Spoou ; and a small brown leather Bag. Information to Mr. Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, April 21. Absconded from Knowstone, on 13th inst., charged with - tealiug an Ass, Cart, & c., recovered :— a shoemaker, ab u". 20 yrs. of age, about 5 feet ins. high, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, crippled in right leg, sole and heel of light boot 3 inches thick, and cannot walk without crutch or stick; • ressed in dark grey cloth coat, recently braided round the cuffs, with black braid, brown cloth vest, with black alpaca sleeves, dark cloth trousers, new black rouud poll hat, and lace- up boots ; supposed gone to South Wales. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Wood, B. Division, Devon Constabulary, South Milton, Devon.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen between 11th and 14th ultimo, from Leyton Marshes, Leyton a black Horse, 13£ hands, star on fore- head and near feet white, short tail." Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 23. Stolen between 18th and 20th instant, from a field in Stamford :— five lamb Hogs, in good condition, each having a faint red paint mark on the back ; the property of Mr. Benj. Frisby. £ 4 reward for such information a3 shall lea. d to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Head Constable Ward, Stamford, Lincolnshire.— Bow- st., April 23. The brown cob horse Pony, supposed stolen at Bosbury, on 5th instant, advertised in Police Gazette of 12th instant, has been found.— Bow- st., April 23. Description of GEORGE ROBINS, alias COCK ROBIN, labourer, charged with stealing a Horse, Cart, and Harness, from Cheltenham, in January last, since recovered :— he is about 33 years of age, 6 feet 2i inches high, dark complexion, dark hair and eyes ; generally dressed in cord trousers, white slop, and black billy- cock hat, and was accompanied by a woman he calls ' Annie,' she is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh complexion, and dark hair. Information to Mr. Superintendent Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham, who holds a. warrant for his appwhenBioov — Bow- sCrett, April 21. Stolen from Hendrefawr Farm, Dear Merthyr, about lst instant :— a 3 year old mare Pony, 12 hands high, black legs, long black mane and tail, not shod, in fair condition, recently recovered from stranglings, now bearing marks of same under the jaws. Information to Mr. Superintendent Thomas, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street. April 19. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE FERSON. Stolen from the person at Croxton Park Races, on 8th instant :— a gold lever Watcb, plain back, engraved oil inside plate, ' Presented to Brother Henry Blackburn by the National Arms Lodge, Delph Saddleworth, for service rendered,' maker's name, Simmonds, St. Ann's Square, Manchester. £ 5 reward will be paid for information that will lead to the conviction of the thief and recovery of the Watch. Information to Mr. Superintendent Goodman, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, April 21. Stolen from the person at Stone Steeplechases, on 15th instant:— a single- case gold lever stop Watch, white dial, second hands, a gold albert link Chain, and large gold Seal, with eagle engraved thereon, attached; a lady's gold English patent lever Watch, gold dial, steel fingers, maker's name Bells, Uttoxeter, No. not known, a thick gold albert Chain, and a large old- fashioned gold Seal, with dark aud red stone, attached; a silver patent lever double- cased Watch, No. 2014. During the night of 15th instant, a dwelling house at Moseley, was broken and entered, and stolen therein :— a chocolate and drab ( Chipping Norton tweed) Coat and Vest, man's size, new, single breasted, pockets on hips, with flaps, a do. outside left breast, a do. inside right, and 2 game do. ; a pair of man's small size watertight Boots, with brass eyelets, and hooks, tips on toes and heels, no nails ; and about 6 or 7 Shillings in Silver aud Bronze. The thief is no douht is wearing the stolen Boots, having left an old pair behind. Information to Mr. Superintendent Tyler, Kings Heath, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, April 21. During the night of 16th instant the dwelling- house of Captain Boteler, at Taplow, Bucks, was burglariously broken and entered and stolen therein :— A small travelling Clock, with white face, supposed maker's name Blutton, Brighton. 2 gold Seals, crest— a lion's head. A small silver Snuff- box. Ditto cameo Brooch. Ditto gold Locket. Ditto silver Pencil case. A common blue bead Necklace. And 2 rows of Roman Pearls. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunham, Police Station. Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, April 19. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen at Ivingswinford, on the night of 14th instant :— a brown nag Mare, five years old, 15 hands high, black legs, bang tail, and in rather low condition. Information to Mr. Superintendent Woollaston, Brierley Hill, or to Sergeant Moore, Police Station, Brettell Lane, Staffordshire.— Bow- st. April 23. Stolen from Newnham Baston, Chulinleigh, Devon, on 21st February last:— a roan coloured Mare, aged, about 10 hands high, white streak down face, white legs, little lame in one of hind legs. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wood, Devon Constabulary, South Molton.— Bow- sl., April 23, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of a tramping brickyard labourer, charged with stealing Tools ( recovered):— about 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, thin face, pug nose, light complexion, aud few sandy whiskers ; dressed iu dark pilot jacket, patched on shoulder, dirty cord trousers, strapped below the knee, twill slop, blue checked cotton shirt., scarf with red border, blue spots tied in front, and ends tucked under the braces, heavy lace- up boots, aud fur cap, with peak, aud button on top. He was traced iuto Brighton ou 18th iustant, and was then, carrying a bundle in blue handkerchief on a shovel. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Silvester, Police Station, Worthing, Sussex.— Bow- street, April 23. Description of RICHARD LEVETT, alias AFLRED NOBURY, a native of Hull, painter and paper hanger, wanted by warrant for stealing a gold Eye Glass, recovered, on 14th instant, at Clifton :— 37 years of age, but looks older, 5 feet 7 inches high, grey hail, long dark heavy moustache, sallow complexion, small spot, which frequently discharges, on the side of nose, near the corner of supposed right eye, aud has an impediment in his speech ; dressed in an old dark mixture cloth coat, old light grey cloth trousers, crimson tie, hard low crowned felt hat, nearly new, old boots, and dirty appearance. He has been convicted of felony at Hull, and supposed at Bradford, he is fond of drink, and is likely to be fouud iu some low public or common lodging house. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary Office, Heworth, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., April 23. Description of ALFRED COLLINS, alias ALFRED BOWDEN, alias BOXER BOWDEN, charged on a warrant with stealing a, silver Watch, ( recovered, pledged by him iu Newport, in the name of ' John Lewis') also a white silk Handkerchief with blue border; a small brass tobjcco Box. clasp— book pattern, and a pair of blue coloured worsted Stockings, white tops and toes, at North Risca, on 3rd February, 1880 :— about 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, rather broad shoulders, fair complexion, clean shaved, small dark moustache, has a lump about the size of a walnut under the right ear, large scar on top of forehead, a stab mark inside left forearm, tattooed supposed with letter ' A. R.' on one or both arms, is well acquainted with Bristol, where his wife and child is supposed to be living ; he stated when at North Risca,. that he knew Treasure Garland, a collier, at Oaky- Welsh- street, Dudley, Billy Hard Head, collier, Twidale, near Brown Lion, Oldbury, and stated that he had sold horses there ; he was dressed in a pilot cloth jacket, brown plaid cloth trousers and vest, elastic- side boots, and black soft bowler hat. Information to Captain Foil, Consta- bulary Office, Tredegar, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 23. Description of CHARLES GALE, a baker, wanted on a charge of stealing £ 54 :— 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, whiskers and mous- tache, inclined to be sandy, grey or blue eyes, rather high forehead, and rather bald on top of head. Description of a man named KERVELL, charged. on - warrant with stealing, on 12th instant, 12s., from a public house in - Brighton, where he had been lodging :— about 27 years o£ age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, rough long black curly hair, swarthy complexion, no moustache, has lost a front tooth ; shabbily dressed, wears a black deerstalke- hat, with mourning band, will seek employment at theatres as dresser, or similar occupation, known at theatres in Portsmouth. Information to Chief Constable Barnden, — Bow- street, April 23. Absconded from High Wycombe, on 15th instant:— WILLIAM HAMELIN BAKER, charged with larceny, trade a gunsmith, from 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather stout figure,, dark hair and eyes, dark complexion, round full face, clean shaved ; dressed in black bard fait hat, and light grey tweed suit. Is fond of talking about pigeon shooting matches, and has risided a considerable time in Brighton and Reading. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Collins, Borough Police, High Wycombe, Bucks^ who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 21. Charged with- stealing carpenter's Tools, at Coseley, on 6th instant:— a man, 36 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light sandy hair, large moustache, no whiskers, rather long face, fresh complexion, medium build; dressed in old dirty black jacket, dark vest with grey stripes, moleskin trousers, cap with peak of same material aod button on top, lace- up boots, rather strong ; by trade an underhand puddler or labourer. Will probably be found bleeping in cabins or ash- holes at ironworks or collieries. Information to Chief Superintendent Longdon, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire, - Bow- street, April 21. Absconded from Longton, on 15th instant,, charged on warrant with embezzlement:- CHARLES EVANS, 19 yrs. of age, 5 feet 6 iuches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, slender build, prominent nose; a gas meter inspector ; dressed in blue cloth jacket, mixture trousers, lace- up boots, and hard black tommy hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent McWilliams, Longton, Staffordshire. Bow- street, April 21. Stolen about 7.30 a. m. on 15th instant, at Stockport- a lady's dark tweed Ulster, double tippet, bone buttons, pockets at sides ; a lady's drab coloured Ulster, 3 plaits down each side of back, bone buttons to match, bottom button but one off, buttons on cuffs, round collar, points on shoulder, has the name ' Chatterton Hillgate, Stockport,' under loop inside neek ; a lady's tweed plaid Ulster, has a small tear which has been patched by placing a piece over it inside, round collar, bone buttons, all part worn ; a Shawl, recovered ; a man's white calico Shirt, iron- mould round shoulders. By a man who pledged the Shawl, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown and slight whiskers, down side of cheeks, stoutish build ; dressed in dark brown overcoat, brown tweed trousers, light shoes, round hard felt hat, wears collar and tie, and of respectable appearance. Information to Borough Police Office, Stockport.— Bow- street, April 21. Description of FREDERICK GRIFFIN, of Stonesfield, Oxon, labourer, charged with stealing about 9th instant, 6 cwt. of Potatoes :— about 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion aud hair, no whiskers, or moustache, round face and blotched ; dressed in a black cloth jacket, with pockets at side, dark vest and- trousers, cap with fur round the edge ; plays a concertina in public- houses. Information to Mr. Superintendent Lakin, Chipping Norton, Oxon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 21. Wanted, charged with stealing mason's Tools, at Upton Scudamore, Wilts, on 10th instaut ( recovered) : — a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 iuches high, light brown hair ( curly), little light whiskers round the face, round features, fair complexion," rather stout build ; dressed in old dark cloth coat, dirty cord trousers and vest, aud grey cloth cap. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Pierce, Warminster, Wilts.— Bow- street, April 19. WTanted by warrant, for embezzlement of a large sum of Money:— FREDK. HEPTON, late chief clerk aud cashier in the Waterworks Department of the Manchester Corporation, about 40. years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, rather[ slender build, face a little blotched, light hair, straggling moustache, aud longish beard, has lost several upper front teeth, eyes weak and wears spectacles, of gentlemanly appear- ance. Supposed to have gone to London, he will endeavour to leave the country. Information at the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street, April 19. certificate, has a child with her, her husband works at gas works, and sometimes as a navvy. Information to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bow- street, April 21. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) A Child was left on the door- step of a house in Belgrave- terrace, Radipole, Weymouth, between 9 and 10 p. m., onT'lth instant. £ 2 reward will be paid by Mr. Superintendent Vickery to any pereon who will give such information as will lead to the discovery of the person who placed the Child where found : - a Male Child 5 weeks old, fresh complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, large mouth and nose ; dre- sed in two head flannels, a white shirt, three under ditto, a white night dress, a black wool shawl, a white wool jacket, a white wool hood, a white fall, a piece of gutta perch a between a white cloth ; these articles are all new. The Child had a ticket pinned . to its breast, addressed ' P. Peck, Esq.' Also on a piece of paper written— 1 Take care of me, I have no mother. Baby.' In a bundle, tied up in a black and white Indian silk handkerchief, f- yards square, were f, napkins, 2 shirts, trimmed with lace I ouud sleeves, a night dress trimmed with lace round neck and sleeves, a . child's flannel ( old),, a new mouth piece for a child's bottle, 2 brushes for cleaning the same, and some new wadding. Supposed by a young woman, dark complexion, medium height, rather slightly built, speaking with a French or Italian accent; dressed in black drees, black jaoket trimmed with black fur, black hat, witli heavy black fall, carrying a small bag or waterproof done up with straps. She has the appearauce of a governess, i' 2 reward will be pud to any person who will give such infor- mation as will lead to the discovery of the person who placed the Child where found, by Mr. Superintendent Vickery, Police Office, Weymouth.— Bow- street, April 23. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS, Description of JOSEPH ALBERT LEVY, charged with indecent assault, who failed to answer to his bail, at the Hants Quarter Sessions, on 6th instant :— he is a German Jew, 29 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, 2 moles right side of neck, mole left side of body, 2 moles on back, boil mark left shoulder, formerly in the employ of Felix Rosenstiel, of Basinghall- street, London, as a traveller for the sale of pictures, & c. Information to the ; Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Consta- bulary, Aldershot, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. Bow- strict, April 23. Remanded until 28th instant, charged witli shoplifting :— GEORGE FORD states that he is a slater's labourer and belongs to Nottingham, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown eyes and hair, dark moustache, cut mark over right eyebrow, dark complexion, and thin face ; dressed iu old cord trousers, old dark mixture coat, cloth skull cap with peak, and white muffler round neck. States that he has lodged in model lodging- houses in Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Darlington and Newcastle,, and that he lodged with a Mrs. Wallace, Sussex- street, Nottingham,' about four years ago, since which time he has been tramping about the country. Information to Mr. Superintendent Metcalfe, City Police Office, Ripon, Yorkshire.'— Bow- street, April 23. Committed for 2 months to Wakefield Prison on 19 th instant, charged with frequenting the Market- place, Keighley, with intent to commit felony :— a man, giving the name of JOHN WILSON, baker, a native of Lisbourne, Belfast, late of Thomas- street, Birmingham, 52 years of age, 5 feet 0 inches high, slender build, pale complexion, sharp features, long nose, brown hair, bald, full light brown beard, whiskers and moustache, round shouldered, indistinct blue tattoo mark, supposed ' J. L.' left forearm; dressed in dark mixture vest and trousers, dark mixture slack- backed jacket with two pockets on liipe, bone buttons, union shirt, grey ground with pink and white stripes, white collar, sailor's knot black scarf, in which is a gold- plated pin with white stone in centre, elastic- side boots, and black billycock hat. Is evidently an expert travelling thief and suspected to be a returned convict or license holder.
