POLICE GAZETTE. & B AUTFARFTB. CONTAINING Tin substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputei TMeves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6443 Notice.— It is requested, that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending tho same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. ' Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made aud sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offcnce charged, and « an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all { Letters addressed to the Editor must befprepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and'. Deserters from lb a Militia, should be forwarded en War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE- GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. < 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'ne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any • expectation of reward for the return of the propeity, without the apprehension of the offender. A silver Geneva Watch, glass cracked, No. 7800. A silver open- face Geneva Watch, maker's name on foot of dial plate in very small letters, ' Schoelfei Chaux des fonds.' A large anchor foreign gold Watch, old make, engraved back, plain dial, and minute hand. A gentleman's gold Geneva Watch, made by Goldsmiths' Alliance Company, Cornhill. A small gold Watch with figured back, maker Boxall, and a gold Albert Chain attached. A silver half hunter Watch, with biue enamel in centre of dial. ' It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Absconded on 8th instant, charged - with forgery :— LEONARD BRISLEY, 20 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build, light complexion and hair, small light whiskers ( inclined to sandy) chin and upper lip cleau shaved ; dressed in black frock overcoat, black walking coat under, light tweed vest atul trousers, side- spring boots ( nearly new), and a soft quilted cloth hat, brown and drab mixture ; carrying a new light mackintosh, and a black leather port- manteau, studded - with brass nails, and place on top for insertion of name and address. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Bow- street, ' April 19. BURGLARY AMD HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of 16th instant the dwelling- house of Captain Boteler, at Taplow, Bucks, was burglariously broken and entered and stolen therein :— A small travelling Clock, with white face, supposed maker's name Mutton, Brighton. 2 gold Seals, crest— a lion's head. A small silver Snuff- box. Ditto cameo Brooch. Ditto gold Locket. Ditto silver Pencil case. A common blue bead Necklace. And 2 rows of Roman Pearls. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, April 19. A house at Chew Stoke was broken and entered during the night of 10th instant, and stolen therein :— 2 pairs of mixed cloth Trousers, partly made ; 1 black cloth medium size clerical Coat, partly made, minus one sleeve ; 1 blue serge Jacket, boy's size ; 1 grey Ulster, diagonal cloth, suitable for a youth ; 1 red mixed Jacket, boy's size ; 1 drab diagonal dust Coat, man's size, worsted facings, brass rings covered with same material for buttons ; 1 pair of elastic- side Boots, man's size ; 1 pair of tailors Scissors ; 1 reel of black machine Twist, No. 16 ; 1 reel of light drab Twist, No. 18 ; 1 reel of white machine Thread. Information to Mr. Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol. — Bow- street, April 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Atcham, on 10th instant :— a pair of corduroy Trousers, man's size, flap fronts, have been washed nearly white ; a white Slop ; a pair of old worsted Stockings, brown colour ; and a pair of eld lace- up Boots, have been mended, nailed round t he heel, toe capped, left boot has a patch on sole. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, at Cheltenham, between 7 p. m. and 9- 30 p. m. on J 1th instant:— a silver lever open face Watch, No. 71199, maker John Howlett, Chelten- ham ; a gold Albert Chain, snake pattern; 2 gold Keys, one with green stone one side, and black and white the other side, the other Key had a green stone in one side ; a lady's gold dress Ring, set with pearls and turquoise ; a gold Necklet, snake pattern ; a small gold Maltese Cross ; aud a child's coral Whistle with three small silver Bells. Supposed by a man about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, long Roman nose, long dark bushy whiskers ; dressed iu a dark grey jacket, soft black billycock hat, and supposed dirty cotton cord trousers. Information to Mr. Superintendent Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham.— Bow- street, April 14. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Stone Steeplechases, on 15th instant:— a single- case gold lever stop Watch, white dial, second hands, a gold albert link Chain, and large gold ' Seal, with eagle engraved thereon, attached; a lady's gold English patent, lever Watch, gold dial, steel fingers, maker's name Bells, Uttoxeter, No. not known, a thick gold albert Chain, and a large old- fashioned gold Seal, with dark and red stone, attached ; a Bilver patent lever double- cased Watch, No. 2014. Also stolen at tho Railway Station, Stone, at 7 25 p. m. same date :— a new American Waltham silver lever Watch, broken at ring, flat glass, opens at back without a spring. Stolen from the person on the Great Eastern Railway, between Ipswich and Manningtree, on 8th instant :— an English silver lever Watch, No. 7316, plain back, capped, with a moment hand on face, maker Zachbeur, Manningtree. Information to Mr. Superintendent Thomas, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, April 19. Stolen from a cow shed at Ford, Onecot, near Leek, during the night of 0th instant:— a brindled coloured Cow, with black nose, 8 years old, and rather straight horns, in low condition, the property of Mis. Leese. Information to Mr. Superintendent Williams, Leek, or to Sergeant Dobson,' Longnor, near Burton, Staffordshire.— Bow- ttreet, April 14. Stolen from Leigh, Surrey, during the night of 12th instaut:— a dark brown cart Horse, 4 years old, 16 hands high, with long mane and tail ; a light spring Cart, painted blue, ' Jesse Lucas, Leigh, Surrey ' thereon'; and a set of brass mounted Harness. By two men, on- about 35 years of age, stout build ; dressed iu a grey coat, and black wide- awake hat; the other cannot be described ; were traced to Sutton with the Horse and Cart, going towards London. Informa- tion to Mr. Superintendent, Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, April 14. Stolen from a field at Bosbury, during the night of 5th instaut:— a dark brown cob horse Pony, about 14 hands high, rising 5 years old, white hind feet, cut tail, and in good condition. Information to Mr. Superintendent Blunsdon, Police Office, Ledbury, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, April 12. Stolen at Stanton Dale, near Ashbourne, during the night of Ist instant :— a red and white Stirk, iu calf, and iu fair condition ; and a barran Cow. The Cow has bince been found on the highway near Ashbourne, and the Stirk has been traced in the direction of Derby, in the possession of a, man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, long dark beard and whiskers, slight build; dressed in dark clothes, large black soft billycock hat, and carried a dark overcoat ou his arm. Information to Mr- Superintendent Williams, Leek, or to Sergeant Evans, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.— Bow- st" e » t, April 12. LARCENY AMD EMBEZZLEMENT. Wanted, charged with stealing mason's Tools, at Upton Scudamore, Wilts, on 10thinstant ( recovered) i - a man, about. 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, light brown hair ( curly), little light whiskers round the face, round features, fair complexion, rather stout build ; dressed in old dark cloth coat, dirty cord trousers aud vest, ahd grey cloth cap. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Pierce, Warminster, Wilts.— Bow- street, April 11). Stolen at Great Woolstone, on 17th i istant :— a dried pigs Cheek. By 2 tramps, oir; a tall mm, abjut 30 yeiri of MONDAY, APRIL 19, 1880. \ 19 P O L I C E GAZETTE. March 17 age, dark bair ; dressed in dark clothes, and black soft billy- cock hat. The other a short man, about 30 years of age ; dressed in dark clothes, and brown cap with tassel on top. One or both men are tattooed on wrist J with blue ink, and are supposed to have been in the Army or Navy, one of them carries a bundle iu a blue handkerchief, they lodged at New- port Pagnell, on the night of 16th instant, and enquired^ the road to bondon, they have been traced to Dunstable, Beds, where they called at a public- house and stated they were < roing to Luton, but no further trace could be ascertained, and it is supposed they have gone on to St. Alban's, Herts, on the London- road. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hedley, Police Office, Fenny Stratford, Bucks.— Bow- street, April 19. " Wanted on a Sheriff's warrant, charged with embezzling £ 25 -.— THOMAS DICKSON, a vanman, about 29 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, ordinary make, bandy legs, sharp features, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, dark complexion, and speaks with Glasgow accent; dressed in checked tweed coat and vest, brown cord trousers, and cloth cap, had on a Bob Boy tartan shirt, resided at 40, Cedar- street ; was last seen late on 13th instant. Inquire at seaports, and wire to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow.— Bow- street, April 19. Charged with stealing a Watch ( recovered), at Chesterton on 30th October. 1878:— JAMES BEECH, of 4, Pratt- street Newcastle- under- Lyme, an engine tenter, 29 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, blue or grey eyes, medium build, married. Information to Sergeant Locker, Chesterton, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 19. Wanted by warrant, for embezzlement of a large sum of Money :— FREDK. HEPTON, lata chief clerk aud cashier in the Waterworks Department of the Manchester Corporation, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, rather slender build, face a little blotched, light hair, straggling moustache, and louguh beard, has lost several upper front teeth, eyes weak and wears spectacles, of gentlemanly appear- ance. Supposed to have gone to London, he will endeavour to leave the country. Information at the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street, April 19. Description of a cab driver, a native of Preston, wanted at Bolton, charged with stealing on 9th instant, a black cloth Yest, a pair of black cloth Trousers, and a silver lever Watch, No. 15527, maker Thomas Yates, Preston, and has the name ' Richard Carr, Southport,' engraved thereon :— about ' 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slender made, light complexion, no whiskers, small tuft on chin, thin face, and addicted to drink ; dressed in the stolen trousers and vest, brown tweed shooting coat, and long shabby blue overcoat, such as are worn by cabmen. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- st., April 16. Description of WILLIAM SWEET, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, has a lump on elbow of right arm, and when at work is left handed, used to look after horses and drive coal carts ; dressed in pilot cloth monkey jacket, dark vest and trousers, and billycock hat, is a native of Castle Cary, Somerset. Informa- tion to Mr. Superintendent Sheppard, Police Office, Wiucan- ton, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 16. Charged with larceny:— WILLIAM CHAPMAN, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, small eyes, squints, dark hair, medium figure, walks very erect; dressed in green plaid coat, raised seamed pocket on breast, mottle coloured cord trousers, raised seams. A tramping clothes peg maker, and buys old iron, & c., supposed to have an old pony with him, has a wife and two childred with him, generally travels in Sussex, and the borders of Surrey and Kent, and attends fairs, & e. Was in the neighbourhood of Caterham, Surrey, on 10th iDstant. Information to Mr. Superintendent ± Serry, East Grinstead, Sussex.— Bow street, April 16. Stolen from Middlesbrough on 10th instant, a new blue serge Jacket, three pockets outside ( two on laps and one on left breast), raised seams; and a pair of new light check tweed Trousers, not lined. By WILLIAM JOHNSON, a German tailor, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 0 inches high, dark complexion, slightly pockpitted, da-' k whiskers down sides of face, rather slender figure, and smart appearance; dressed in a plain blue cloth coat, bound edges, dark trousers and vest, and black hard felt hat. He is accompanied by a little girl about 5 years old. Information to Head Constable Saggerson, Detective Department, Middlesbrough, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 14. Stolen on 24th ultimo, at East Worthing :— a quantity of Portuguese Lace, consisting of pieces of various widths, and about 15 yards long; also pieces of Edging and Insertion ; 4 Portuguese Handkerchiefs, two are antique and extra large size; and 1 lace, 1 houiton, and 1 valencienes Handkerchiefs. Supposed by a woman, between 40 and 50 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, swarthy complexion, black hair; dressed in dark stuff dress, brown hat, aud grey waterproof jacket, respectable appearance. Had been employed several weeks as nurse. Information to Mr. Superintendent Silvester, Police Station, Worthing, Sussex.— Bow- st., April 14. Description of HENRY ST. CLAIR, watted by warrant for stealing a Watch aud Chain, on 10th instant:— about 29 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark curly hair and mous- tache, rather pale, high forehead, tattooed on the left arm, aud walks very erect; dressed when last seen in a shabby black suit, a low felt hat, and a pair of Derby tie shoes, far worn ; said he was a comic singer. Information to Chief Superintendent Williams, Liverpool.— Bow- street, April 14. Absconded from Filey, on 30th ultimo, charged on warrant with larceny as bailee of a silver lever Watch ( watch recovered, sold) :— HENRY or HARRY DONNER, a farm labourer, has been a fisherman, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark brown bair and moustache, birth mark under right eye, stout figure ; dressed when absconded in old blue pilot jacket, blue guernsey, moleskin trousers, hard black felt hat, and strong lace- up boots; supposed a native of Lincolnshire. His parents are supposed to be now residing in Durham- street, Middlesbrough. Information to Mr. Superintendent Spence, North Riding Constabulary Office, Pickering, or to Inspector Dove, County Police Office, Falsgrave, Scarborough, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., April 14. Descridtion of JOHN PEARSON, drapers apprentice who absconded from Penrith, Cumberland, on 3rd instant, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, charged with embezzling £ 3 10s. :— he is a native of Temple Sowerby, Westmorland, 19 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender figure, dark hair, small dark moustache, no whiskers, aid has a habit of knitting his brows when spoken to; dressad i. dark s. . of clothes, and low hard black felt hat. He is suppeaed to 1 e gone into Yorkshire, where he will most likely seek eniy oyme* t at drapers shops. Information to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, Cumberland, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, April 14. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Upper Ponden, Stan- bury, o* 2nd'? 5stant:— a black cloth Overcoat, two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, black cloth buttons ; a red and blaok silk Neckerchief ; half of a black silk Neckerchief; and a blue and white check bundle Handkerchief, which has been patched with the same material. Supposed by a man about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, hair turning grey, slight whiskers, speck over right eye; dressed in dirty velveteen coat, with two pockets at side, and an old black billycock hat. Description of HENRY GOBLE, alias MAY, charged on warrant with obtaining goods by false pretences :— about 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight figure, sallow com- plexion, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache same colour, dark grey eyes, prominent forehead, slightly inkneed; dressed in dark trousers, brown overcoat, rather long, with velvet collar, high black hat, wears a watch chain from his waistcoat pocket with two lockets attached to it, one of the lockets being larger than the other ; native of Hove, draper's assistant ; he has just been released from prison after under- going a term of imprisonment for stealing two ponies from a riding master at Hove, and he is supposed to have previously served a term of penal servitude. Description of JOHN CORNWALL BOLDERO, charged on warraut with obtaining £ 36, by false pretences :— he is 57 years of age, 6 feet 1 inch high, sallow complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, turning grey, stout build, full face, flat footed, lame left leg, stoops when walking ; his wife's mother resides at Barrow, in Lincolnshire. Charged with obtaining, on 30th ultimo, in St. Alban's, a Sovereign, by stating that the Rector of the Abbey had relieved him :— a man, who stated he was an artist, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build, sallow complexion, rather full face, auburn hair and moustache, little or no whiskers ; of good address ; dressed in fashionable black coat, light trousers, black felt hat ; wearing spectacles at the time. Carried a roll with an elastic band round it, which had the appearance of a sketch book, and he was wearing a kid glove on his left hand. It is supposed he puts on the spectacles when at or near the place he intends to call. He was seen in company with a man, 20 or 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slight build, light hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a dark tweed coat and trousers, and black deerstalker hat. The body has the appearance of that of a tramping mechanic or miner, and appears to have been in the water from two to three weeks.
