WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenover it is dosired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offencc charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from tho Army, and af Absentees and'Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They Bhould be sigued or accompanied by a letter, Bigned by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for tho return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person in Brighton on 29th and 30th ultimo:— A gold open face Geneva Watch, white face, ' T. G lading' engraved inside, brequet spring, No. 2372. A thick gold verge Watch, with white dial and seconds hands. A gold lever Watch, maker's name Burrell, Woolwich. A silver lever Watch, open face, white dial, engine- turned case, maker, Germain, Brighton. A silver English lever Watch, white dial and seconds hands, maker's name supposed Rothwell. A silver Geneva Watch, glass cracked, No. 7800. A gold lever Watch, compensating balance. A small gold Geneva Watch, very flat, open face, engine turned back, very much worn, drilled in three holes. A silver open- face Geneva Watch, maker's name on foot of dial plate in very small letters, ' Schoeffer Chaux des fonds.' A large anchor foreign gold Watch, old make, engraved back, plain dial, and minute hand. A gentleman's gold Geneva Watch, made by Goldsmiths' Alliance Company, Cornhill. A small gold Watch with figured back, maker Boxall, and a gold Albert Chain attached. A silver half hunter Watch, with blue enamel in centre of dial. Information to Chief Constable Barnden, Brighton.— Bow- street, April 2. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Charged on warrant with breaking and entering an office and stealing therefrom, a Revolver and other articles ( recovered), and also for firing two shots from the revolver at a police constable. Four men concerned in the above robbery were apprehended on 2nd instant:— JOHN WM. TURNER, alias NIXON or NICHOLSON, a painter by trade, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion, slight light moustache, scar on neck under left jaw, about half an inch long ; dressed in an old black cloth coat, daubed with paint, dark mixture trousers and waistcoat, round felt hat, and a pair of Beverley Militia boots. FREDERICK WILLIAM WILSON, ship's steward, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair and moustache; dressed in a blue serge suit, and cheese- cutter cap. All expenses paid. Information to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bom- street, April 7. Stolen between 6 and 10 p. m. on 30th ultimo, at Denton, near Gravesend, Kent:— a gent's plain double- case gold lever Watch, Turkish dial; a lady's gold Geneva ditto, No, 32328, plain gold Chain attached; five £ 100 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 46453, 46455, 46954, 46956, and one number not known; seven £ 20 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 10863,10864,10865, 10866, 10867, 10868, 10869 ; three £ 10 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 18900, 18901, 18902 ; five £ 20 Egyptian Bonds; a £ 100 ditto, unified and preference stock 6 per c.; five £ 20 Gravesend Water Shares ; £ 160 in Gold ; and a London and County Bank Book. Information to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- st., April 2. During the night of 28th instant, the Birmingham Canal Navigation Toll Office, Hednesford, was broken into and stolen therein :— a counterfeit Two Shilling Piece, with a bit broken out of side, which is left behind ; a Ditto, having a leaden look, and light weight; a counterfeit Shilling, bent very much ; a Ditto with bit rubbed off edge ; about 6 or 8 Post Cards, stamped ' Birmingham Canal Navigation' on top ; and about 24 Halfpenny Post Stamps. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hackney, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Grupie, Hednesford, near Stafford.— Bow- street, March 31. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Suffield, Leigh near Worcester, on 22ud instant:— a grey Jacket, with side pockets and flaps, on each side ; a dark mixture Vest; and 7s. 6d., in Silver ; supposed by two men who where seen near the cottage, looked like tramping navvies, and went in the direction of Worcester. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Turner, Upton- on- Severn, or P. S. Drury, Malvern. — Bow- street, March 30. Further information in reference to the burglary at Box Grove, near Guildford, during the night of 17th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of 19th instant :— a man is suspected who left Woking for London by the mail train on the morning of 18th instant, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high; dressed in dark coat and trousers, aud close- fitting cap. £ 10 reward will be paid for the recovery of the property and conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Barber, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- st., March 30. Between 10 p m. on 25th, and 5 a. m. on 26th instant, the dwelling house of the Rev. F. Bennett, of Wolvercott, near Oxford, was broken and entered, and stolen therefrom :— 12 dessert Knives and Forks, with ivory handles, 4 plated table Spoons, 6 plated Spoons, crest— a lion's head; 4 plated dinner Forks, crest— a dragon's head ; 3 or 4 plated Forks, 5 plated egg Spoons, 2 plated dessert Spoons, crest— a lion's head ; 2 silver pepper Boxes ; a silver mustard Pot, egg Bhape ; and a tin Box, 22 inches long by 12 wide and ' 11 inches deep, containing a quantity of School Board papers. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 26th instant, at Pool End, Leek :— a black worsted cord frock Coat, with two pockets behind ; a light mixture Vest; a pair of black and white striped Trousers ; an old worsted cord frock Coat and Vest; a gold Brooch, star pattern ; a silver Brooch ; a gold Ring, with white stone in centre ; a plain gold Ring ; two Books, subject— ' Over the Sea,' one ' Walker's Dictionary,' and a Church Service ; also a black leather Bag, with handle on the top, about 12 inches long. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Williams, Leek, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., March 30. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen at Stanton Dale, near Ashbourne, during the night of 1st instant :— a red and white Stirk, iu calf, and in fair condition ; and a barran Cow. The Cow has since been found on the highway near Ashbourne, and the Stirk has been traced in the direction of Derby, in the possession of a man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 iuches high ; dressed in long dark coat, and black sammy hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Williams, Leek, or to Sergeant Evans, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 7. Stolen on 31st ultimo :— a bay Mare, in foal, 14$ hands, has been blistered inside near foreleg, in good condition. Supposed by two men, one 34 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers; dressed in long dark overcoat, tight- fitting cord trousers, rough hairy cap with peak; the other cannot be described ; appearance of horse copers. Were seen leading it in Hanger- lane, Ealing, towards London. Had with them a dark brown horse, and light spring cart, painted dark green, picked out red. Infor- mation to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 7. Stolen during the night of 29th ultimo, from Stewarts Lane, Batterseaa bay Russian gelding Pony, 13 hands high, rough coat, cow- hocked, in good condition ; a dog- cart, painted green, picked out with blue, patent axle ; also a set of silver mounted Harness. Supposed by a mau, 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, beard and moustache ; dress, dark coat and vest, cord trousers, soft black billy- cock hat, sometimes wears a light mackintosh, has friends residing at Lover, and Itedlynch, near Salisbury, likely to visit horse fairs, and markets. Stolen during the night of 12th instant, from Mitcham Common :— a brown mare Pony, saddle marked, off bind hoof white, patch of hair rubbed off near side, in fair condition. Absconded, 18th instant, charged with stealing a dark bay Horse, 14 hands high, a set of silver plated Harness, and an old village Cart, painted black :— THOMAS TOWNSEND, 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers slight, and moustache : dressed in dark suit, and high black hat, a commission agent, known to Police, at Windsor, where he may go, wife resides at No. 76, Kirkdale- road, Peckham. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D. Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, March 30. Committed for trial, at the ensuing Cumberland Sessions, at Carlisle, on 6th proximo, for Sheep- stealing:— WILLIAM BROWN, alias WILLIAM HOWE, alias WILLIAM NODDINGS. 28 years of age, about 6 feet high, dark com- plexion, slightly pockmarked, dark brown hair, darkish moustache, grey eyes, and proportionate figure ; dressed in dark faded cloth overcoat with velvet collar, black cloth jacket ( bound), light check tweed trousers and waistcoat, red and white silk neckerchief, blue duffel cloth cap with peak of same material, and lace boots ; he travels about the country buying old scrap iron, bags, & c. And JOHN ARMSTRONG, alias JOHN HARRISON, alias JOHN ARMSTRONG . HARRISON, 28 years of age, about 6 feet high, sallow com- plexion, face shaved, grey eyes, light brown hair, and pro- portionate figure; dressed in blue duffel long overcoat with velvet collar, dark check cloth jacket and waistcoat, dark cord trousers, black leather leggings with 4 straps and buckles on sides, magenta and white check muffler, black billycock hat, and lace boots ; he is a low horse- dealer, travelling about tho country with a horse and cart. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, March 30. Absconded from Penrith, charged on a warrant with obtaining a Horse by false pretences :— RICHARD BERRY, a hawker of pots, & c., 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light complexion, light hair, stoutish figure, and has neither whiskers nor moustache; dressed in light- brown or yellow; h check tweed nuit, blue hankerchief, » « trk cloth cap with peak of same material, and clogs. Informal ion to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, Cumberland ; or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Brno- street, March 30. Stolen from Woodcut, Bromsgrove, on the night of 15th instant, a dark brown entire Donkey, 7 years old, white nose, light- coloured belly. Supposed by a gipsy, with woman and two children, one child about 4 years of age, the other baby in arms. They encamped near at night. Had a cart with shafts, apparently for a donkey. Had a few boughs of wood and a few packages on the top of eart. Information to Mr. Superintendent Jeffrey, Police Station, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, March 30. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on 31st ultimo, from the dwelling house, of E. Wells, Esq., Wallingford :— a plain silver Mustard- pot, boat shape ; a silver Sugar- sifter ; a Cigar- case, silver top; a Paper- knife, silver blade, and ivory handle; a Magnifying- glass, bone handle ; a Florentine marble Letter- weight, white flower on top. Supposed by a bricklayer, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inchesf high; dressed in dirty brown or tweed suit, lace- up boots, and soft Dudley hat. Information to Inspector Butcher, Police Station, Wallingford, Berks. — Bow- street, April 5. Stolen at Hampworth, on the night of 1st instanta small pony Cart, painted dark green, with white lines round the panels, shafts nearly new, 3 feet 6 inches front wheel to wneeL Supposed by a man, a brickmaker, who has been living at Battersea, from 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet lo or 11 inches high ; dressed in light coloured mackintosh, and soft billycock hat. Was seen in the neighbourhood of Hampworth, on 1st instant, had in his possession a grey pony with harness, and covered with a large sack or bag. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Stephens, Fisherton, Salisbury, Wiltshire.— Bow- street April 5. Stolen in Blackburn, during March :— On 3rd, a silver lever Watch, white dial, seconds finger, No. 49552, had attached a brass albert Guard. By a woman, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, light hair, long thin face ; dressed in dark shawl, light skirt, and boots. Is a prostitute. Between 3rd and 5th, a man's corduroy Jacket, three out- side pockets and one inside left breast, dark plaid lining, white buttons ; and 3 Chintz pocket Handkerchiefs. By u mau who pledged the Jacket at Mr. John Holt's pawnshop, Whalley Banks, and gave the name of JOHN COOK, Cleaver- street ( which is false), about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, no whiskers ; dressed in a suit of corduroy, and dark cap. On 31st, a grey, black, and peach broken plaid Shawl, about half worn. Supposed by a man who was hawking umbrellas, and had a bass with him, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high; dressed in old dark clothes, dark billy- cock, and old shoes. Information to Chief Constable Shoubridge, Police Office, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- street, April 5. Stolen on the night of 26th ultimo, at Wadhurst, Sussex: — five small Keys ; a table Spoon ; two dessert Spoons, supposed ' T. H.' engraved on handle; eight silver tea Spoons, old and small, various sizes, some have ' A, T.' 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. April 12 engraved on handle, some of the handles are plain, and some are chased. By THOMAS AUSTIN, 45 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, has a lump under right ear, brown hair, medium figure ; dressed in light overcoat, high white hat, with black band, short gaiters ; he is well educated, and is very fond of smoking ; is well known in Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, and Maidstone. Information at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, to Mr. Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, or to Sergeant Avery, Court House, Mark Cross, Sussex.— Bow- street, April 5. Stolen from a cottage near West Felton, about 4 p. m. on 3rd instant:— a silver Geneva Watch, No. 355723, by a man 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high ; dressed in a blue serge slop, a white slop underneath, and a cap, had the appearance of a seaman. Information to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry. Shropshire.— Bow- street, ' April 5. Stolen during the night of 28th ultimo, from a stable at Minton, Salop :— a double- breasted plaid Jacket, pockets on. hips each side, one inside left breast, black buttons. By a man, about 24 years of age; about 5 feet 3 inches High, dark complexion, dark whiskers round face, chin shaved clean ; dressed in dark clothes, hard felt hat, with elastic on it. Information to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop. — Bow- street, April 5. Stolen from the Saxon Hotel, St. Leonards :— about £ 50 in gold, £ 70 in Bank of England Notes; a pair of red and brown onyx Solitaires, set with diamonds; a gold gipsy Ring, set with three large rubies ; a gold Geneva hunting Watch, with black face, No. 466; a gold albert Chain, with coral beads aud pendants attached ; a Mordan's gold Pencil Case ; a lady's long gold Chain, with large swivel at end, old- fashioned ; a solid gold Brooch, half ball in centre ; and a pair of coral Links, set with diamonds. Supposed by a man about 26 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, slight dark moustache, downcast look, and thin face ; dressed in a long blue overcoat, pockets at sides, and black round hard hat. Information to Mr. Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, April 2. Absconded on 21st ultimo, charged with stealing £ 1 10s., and a pair of man's button Boots:— CHRISTOPHER DYER, 28 years of age, ( looks older), 5 feet 4J inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, beard, and mous tache ; dressed in blue pilot jacket, hard felt hat, imitation of garnet pin in scarf, a porter, formerly a butler ; may be found at Winchester, where his wife's father is town crier. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 2. Description of JOHN BARRY, journeyman baker, of Luton, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— 34 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, brown hair, whiskers and moustache inclined to be sandy, shaves under the chin, long nose, small eyes ; dressed in a light suit, has a dark top coat with him, white billy hat, without band, heavy lace- up boots, blue and white check shirt. Information to Head Constable Jaquest, Borough Police, Luton, Beds.— Bow- street, March 31. Description of WILLIAM WEIGHTMAN, clerk and barman, who absconded from Penrith, on 24th inst., charged on a warrant with stealing money belonging to his employer : — 2G years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair and moustache, no whiskers or bqard, dark eyes, with 3. peculiar cast in them, aud slender figure ; dressed iir a brown cloth coat and waistcoat, dark cloth trousers, and strongish boots. Information to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, Cumberland; or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow street, March 30. Description of JAMES DONALDSON, charged on a warrant with stealing a silver Watch :— about 30 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, generally long and frizzy, black eyes ( very sharp), rather sharp features; generally dressed in dark clothes, drab over- coat with velvet collar, hard felt hat. He speaks with a broad Scotch accent, and is a journeyman watchmaker. In- formation to Mr. Superintendent Turner, Upton- on- Severn, or P. S. Drury, Malvern.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen at Nateby, on 27 th instant:— a silver lever Watch, maker Hatton, No. 52, dark cream coloured dial, gold fingers, dark steel seconds, engine- turned case?, had a double steel Guard with common watch Key, and box Key attached. By HENRY SPENCER, who had been employed on the farm about 0 weeks and absconded :— 16 or 17 years of age rather low for his age, fresh looking, light brown hair, rather long features, and intelligent looking ; dressed in light plaid tweed cloth jacket, with pocket outside each hip, and one in left breast, dark cloth trousers, torn in the seat, double- breasted dark cloth vest, strong watertight lace- up boots, nearly new, plated on the heels, and heavily nailed on the soles ; stated that he belonged to Manchester. Information at County Police Office, Bowgrave, Garstang, Lansashire.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen at North Ormesby, on 27th instant:— 2 silver Table Spoons, one marked ' T. A. W.', and the other ' W.'; and a silver Dessert Spoon, marked ' W.' By a man who came to lodge at the house on 26th instant, a German, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high,, fair complexion, light hair, bald on top of head, no whiskers, proportionate figure, of gentlemanly appearance, bow legged, and speaks with a strong foreign accent; dressed in dark cloth top coat, velvet collar, and lined with strong satin cloth, dark cloth trousers, laced boots, with punched toecaps, tord black hard felt hat. Stated he was an artist. Information to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Inspector Silverside, North Ormesby. — Bow- street, March 30. Absconded, 22nd iustant, charged with stealing £ 137 in Gold and Silver, the Money of his master: — JOHN KNIGHT, 37 years of age, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache; dressed in thick black overcoat, dark tweed under, black trousers, black soft felt hat, aud of respectable appearance. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W .- Bow- street, March 30. Absconded, 17th instant, charged with stealing G Watches — a gold English Lever, 34380 inside dome, a silver Lever, 39580, a large size silver keyless Geneva, metal dome, a silver Geneva Hunting, a horizontal Geneva, and a small gold Geneva :— RICHARD BAKER, 3G years of age, 5feet G inches high, fair complexion, hair, beard aud moustache, large red nose, short neck, and stoops when walking ; dressed in old blue overcoat, brown mixture trousers, high black hat, Has a sister residing in Liverpool and also at Glasgow. Warraut issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W .- Bow- street, March 30. Description of HENRY BEALES, smack apprentice, charged ou warrant with stealing a blue knitted Guernsey, and a pair of fustian Trousers :— 15 years of age, 4 feet 8 ins. high, brown hair, fresh complexion, full face ; dressed blue guernsey, fustian trousers, scotch cap, blucher boots. Information to Chief Constable Ogden, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.— Bow- street, March 30. Absconded on 20th inst., charged with embezzlement:— ROBERT ELKINGTON, 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, ruddy connexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, dark eyes, low forehead, short and thick hands dressed in light check coat and vest, dark cloth trousers, hard felt hat; a baker, but previously a coachman ; native of Eltham, Kent; likely to go either to the Cape of Good Hope or America.
