FIG AUTFIORITG. : CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in ease* of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature —-—' 71 ' of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Oj, The Barnes of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horse* for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6436 FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is gieen, it is indispensably necessary that an information 6hould be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, ef the Offence charged, and an attested copy thoreof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, atl tetters addressed to tho Editor UlUSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ef Absentees and . Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded en War Ofiice Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'ne persons forwarding them. They shoidd contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return cf the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either io insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " Tlie Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the, abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Remanded, charged with forgery :— THOMAS EVANS, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 iuches high, dark brown hair, fresh complexion, brown eyes, brown whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, smart appearance, slightly knock- kneed, and has a slight impediment, in his speech when commencing to speak, lost middle finger of right hand, and through that has a large scar on back of the hand, but he has a glove with the middle finger stuffed with wadding, so that all the fingers would appear all right when he has a glove on ; dressed in a dark grey great coat, with velvet collar, dark cloth coat and vest ( dark grey), small striped cloth trousers, elastic- side boots, and a high crown hat. Stolen from the person in Brighton on 29th and 30th tiltimo :— A gold open face Geneva Watch, white face, ' T. G lading' engraved inside, brequet spring, No. 2372. A thick gold verge Watch, with white dial and seconds hands. A gold lever Watch, maker's name Burrell, Woolwich. A silver lever Watch, open face, white dial, engine- turned case, maker, Germain, Brighton. A silver English lever Watch, white dial and seconds hands, maker's name supposed Roth well. A silver Geneva Watch, glass cracked, No. 7800. A gold leVer Watch, compensating balance. A small gold Geneva Watch, very flat, open face, engine turned back, very much worn, drilled in three holes. A silver open- face Geneva Watch, maker's name on foot of dial plate in very small letters, ' Schoeffei Chaux des fonds.' A large anchor foreign gold Watch, old make, engraved back, plain dial, and minute hand. A gentleman's gold Geneva Watch, made by Goldsmiths' Alliance Company, Cornhill. A small gold Watch with figured back, maker Boxall, and a gold Albert Chain attached. A silver half hunter Watch, with blue enamel iu centre of dial. . Information to Chief Constable Barnden, Brighton.— Bow- street, April 2. Stolen from the person at Burton- on- Trent, on 25th instant:— a silver patent English lever Watch, white dial, and steel hands, a small piece has been chipped off outer case where it opens. Information to Mr. Superintendent Harston, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 30. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen between 6 and 10 p. m. on 30th ultimo, at Denton, near Gravesend, Kent:— a gent's plain double- case gold lever Watch, Turkish dial; a lady's gold Geneva ditto, No. 32328, plain gold Chain attached; five ,£ 100 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 46453, 46455, 46954, 46956, and one number not known; seven £ 20 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 10863,10864,10865, 10866, 10867, 10868, 10869 ; three £ 10 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 18900, 18901, 18902 ; five £- 20 Egyptian Bonds ; a £ 100 ditto, unified and preference stock 6 pel- c.; five £ 2(> Gravesend Water Shares ; £ 160 in Gold ; and a Loudon aud County Bank Book. Information to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- st., April 2. During the night of 28th instant, the Birmingham Canal Navigation Toll Office, Hednesford, was broken into and stolen therein :— a counterfeit Two Shilling Piece, with a bit broken out of side, which is left behind ; a Ditto, having a leaden look, and light weight ; a counterfeit Shilling, bent very much ; a Ditto with bit rubbed off edge ; about 6 or 8 Pos jCards, stamped ' Birmingham Canal Navigation' on top ; and about 24 Halfpenny Post Stamps. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hackney, Brownhiils, or to Sergeant Grupie, Hednesford, near Stafford.— Bow- street, March 31. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Suffield, Leigh near Worcester, on 22nd instant:— a grey Jacket, with side pockets and flaps, on each side ; a dark mixture Vest; and 7s. 6d., in Silver ; supposed by two men who where seen near the cottage, looked like tramping navvies, and went in the direction of Worcester. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Turner, Upton- on- Severn, or P. S. Drury, Malvern. — Bow- street, March 30. Further information in reference to the burglary at Box Grove, near Guildford, during the night of 17th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of 19th instant :— a man is suspected who left Woking for Loudon by the mail train on the morning of 18th instant, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high; dressed in dark coat and trousers, and close- fitting tap. £ 10 reward will be paid for the recovery of the property and conviction of the thief or thieve--. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Barber, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- st., March 30. Between 10 p m. on 25th, and 5 a. m. on 26th instant, the dwelling house of the Rev. F. Bennett, of Wolvercott, near Oxford, was broken and entered, aud stolen therefrom 12 dessert Kuives and Forks, with ivory handles, 4 plated table Spoons, 6 plated Spoons, crest— a lion's head ; 4 plated dinner Forks, crest— a dragon's head; 3 or 4 plated Forks, 5 plated egg Spoons, 2 plated dessert Spoons, crest— a lion': bead ; 2 silver pepper Boxes; a silver mustard Pot, egg shape; and a tin Box, 22 inches long by 12 wide and I 11 inches deep, containing a quantity of School Board papers. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Statior, Oxford.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 26th instant, at Pool End, Leek :— a black worsted cord frock Coat, with two pockets behind ; a light mixture Vest ; a pair of black and white striped Trousers ; au old worsted cord frock Coat aud Vest; a gold Brooch, star pattern ; a silver Brooch ; a gold Ring, with white stone in centre ; a plain gold Ring ; two Books, subject—• ' Over the Sea,' one ' Walker's Dictionary,' and a Church Service ; al.- o a black leather Bag, with handle on the top, about 12 inches long. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Williams, Leek, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., March 30. plexioa, slightly pockmarked, dark brown hair, darkish moustache, grey eyes, and proportionate figure ; dressed in dark faded cloth overcoat with velvet collar, black cloth jacket ( bound), light check tweed trousers and waistcoat, red and white silk neckerchief, blue duffel cloth cap with peak of same material, and lace boots ; he travels about the country buying old scrap iron, bags, & c. And JOHN ARMSTRONG, alias JOHN HARRISON, alias JOHN ARMSTRONG HARRISON, 28 years of age, about 6 feet high, sallow com- plexion, face shaved, grey eyes, light brown hair, and pro portionate figure ; dressed in blue duffel long overcoat with velvet collar, dark check cloth jacket and waistcoat, dark cord trousers, black leather leggings with 4 straps and buckles on sides, magenta and white check muffler, black billycock hat, and lace boots ; he is a low horse- dealer, travelling about the country with a horse and cart. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Ofiice, Carlisle.— Bow- street, March 30. Absconded from Penrith, charged on a warrant with obtaining a Horse by false pretences :— RICHARD BERRY, a hawker of pots, & c., 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light complexion, light hair, stoutish figure, and has neither whiskers nor moustache; dressed in liglit- brown or yellowish check tweed suit, blue neckerchief, dark cloth cap with peak of same material, and clogs. Information to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, Cumberland ; or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen from Woodcut, Bromsgrove, on the night of 15th instant, a dark brown entire Donkey, 7 years old, white nose, light- coloured belly. Supposed by a gipsy, with woman and two children, one child about 4 years of age, the other baby in arms. They encamped near at night. Had a cart with shafts, apparently for a donkey. Had a few boughs of wood and a few packages on the top of cart. Information to Mr. Superintendent Jeffrey, Police Station, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen on the night of 20th instant, from a field in, Brinsop, Hereford, the property of Mr. Norman Edwards :— a dark face yearling Shropshire- down fat Sheep, punch marked in both ears, and a small pitch mark on top of shoulder. £ 2 reward will be paid on the apprehension aud conviction of the offender or offenders, by Mr. Superintendent Shead, to whom information is to be given, Police Station, Weobley, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen on 21st instant, at Wartling, Sussex : — a pair of man's worsted cord Trousers ; a pair or grey cloth Trousers, and a Vest ; an old grey Jacket; a brown Overcoat with velvet collar ; a pair of man's light half Boots, nailed and tips toe and heel, have been half soled ; a red leather money Purse, containing a Sixpenny Piece and three Pennies ; a double- bladed Knife with Cork- screw; aud about 2 lbs. of cooked Beef aud some Bread. Supposed by two tramps who were traced to Wood's Corner, Dallington, Sussex : one from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark com- plexion, and long brown hair ; dressed in pepper- and- salt coloured jacket, old shoes, and black cap. The other from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, sandy hair and moustache ; dressed in old dark clothes, old shoes, and black cap. Both supposed to be foreigners. In- formation at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewis, or to Mr. Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham, Sussex. —- Bow- street, March 24. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of 12th instant, from Mitcbam Common :— a brown mare Pony, saddle marked, off hind hoof white, patch of hair rubbed off' near side, in fair condition. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, March 31. Absconded, 18th itstant, charged with stealing a dark bay Horse, 14 bands high, a set of silver plated Harness, and an old village Cart, painted black :— THOMAS TOWNSEND, 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers slight, and moustache : dressed iu dark suit, and high black hat, a commission agent, known to Police, at Windsor, where he may go, wife resides at No. 76, Kirkdale- road, Peckham. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D. Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolita/ n Police, March 30. Committed for trial, at the ensuing Cumberland Sessions, at Carlisle, on 6th proximo, for Sbeep- stealing :— WILLIAM BBOWN, alias WILLIAM HOWE, alias WILLIAM NODDINGS. 28 years of age, about C feet high, dark com 2 POLICE GAZETTE April 2 Stolen at Nateby, on 27th instant:— a silver lesser Watch, maker Hatton, No. 52, dark cream coloured dial, gold fingers dark steel seconds, engine- turned cases, had a double steel Guard with common watch Key, and box Key attached. By HENRY SPENCER, who had been employed on the farm, about 6 weeks and absconded :— 16 or 17 years of age rather low for his age, fresh looking, light browa hair, rather long features, and intelligent looking ; dressed m light plaid tweed cloth jacket, with pocket outside eaeh hip, and one m left breast, dark cloth trousers, torn in the seat, double- breasted dark cloth vest, strong watertight lace- up boots, nearly new, plated on the heels, and heavily nailed on the soles; stated that he belonged to Manchester. Information at County Police Office, Bowgrave, Garstang, Lan « ashire.— Bow- street, March 30. : ° Stolen at North Ormesby, on 27th instant:— 2 silver Table Spoons, one marked ' T. A. W.', and the other ' W.'; and a silver Dessert Spoon, marked ' W.* By a man who came to lodge at the house on 26th instant, a German, 30' to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, bald on top of head, no whiskers, proportionate figure, of gentlemanly appearance, bow legged, and speaks with a strong foreign accent ; dressed in dark cloth top coat, velvet collar, and lined with strong satin cloth, dark cloth trousers, laced boots, with punched toecaps, und black hard felt hat. Stated he was an artist. Information to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Inspector Silverside, North Ormesby. — Bow- street, March 30. Absconded, 22nd instant, charged with stealing £ 137 in Gold and Silver, the Money of his master: — JOHN KNIGHT, 37 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in thick black overcoat, dark tweed under, black trousers, black soft felt hat, and of respectable appearance. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Bow- street, March 30. Absconded, 17th instant, charged with stealing 6 Watches- a gold English Lever, 34380 inside dome, a silver Lever, 39580, a large size silver keyless Geneva, metal dome, a silver Geneva Huuting, a horizontal Geneva, and a small gold Geneva :— RICHARD BAKER, 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, hair, beard and moustache, large red nose, short neck, and stoops when walking ; dressed in old blue overcoat, brown mixture trousers, high black hat Has a sister residing in Liverpool and also at Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Bow- street, March 30. Description of HENRY BEALES, smack apprentice, charged on warrant with stealing a blue knitted Guernsey, and a pair of fustian Trousers :— 15 years of age, 4 feet 8 ins. high, brown hair, fresh complexion, full face ; dressed blue guernsey, fustian trousers, scotch cap, blucher boots. Information to Chief Constable Ogden, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.— Bow- street, March 30. Absconded on 20th inst., charged with embezzlement;— ROBERT ELKINGTON, 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, ruddy complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, dark eyes, low forehead, short and thick hands ; dressed in light check coat and vest, dark cloth trousers, hard felt hat ; a baker, but previously a coachman ; native of Eltham, Kent; likely to go either to the Cape of Good Hope or America. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W. Metropolitan Police, March 30. Absconded from the new Railway Works at Waldron, Sussex, on 27th instant, charged with stealing two Ducks ( recovered) :— a navvy, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, sharp- pointed nose, dark eyes, dark hair,[ thick- set, whiskers cut short, rather stout built; dressed in a dark grey cloth jacket ( has been patched on back), mole- skin breeches, black leather leggings, double- breasted cord vest, Paisley neckerchief with blue stripes in border, dark cap, and heavy navvy boots ; had with him a black smooth- coated dog with some white on the breast; may be found on new railway works. Information to Mr. Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or to any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, March 30. Description of JAMES MORRIS, a commercial traveller, charged on warrant with stealing, at Bolton, on 25th instant, £ 31 10s. ; also with embezzling various other sums of Money during the last three months :— he is about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, slender made, blue ey es, light hair, whisk ers, an d moustache, which cover a top ' hair shorn' lip which causes a peculiar snafHe or impediment in his speech, shaves on chin and throat, long thin face and features, and stoops a little ; dressed in black cloth coat and vest, both trimmed with braid, light cloth trousers, black hard billycock hat, and elastic- side boots. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, who holds warrant.— Bow- street, March 30. hard felt hat, carried a blue rough overcoat; a groom, native of Liverpool, for two years till recently in the employ of Mr. Picardo, proprietor of the Nigger Minstrel Troop, as valet, and has visited many towns wiffli Aim. Supposed to have friends at Leicester and Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Gt. Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropoitan Police, March 30. Description of PEARCE, charged on warrant with larcenv as bailee of a silver Geneva Watch :*— ho is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, rather stout build dark complexion, dark brown whiskers, moustache and beard, apparently of about a months growth, short neck, weak simple way of speaking; dressed: respectably. He is a travelling watch and clock cleaner, and usually carries his tools in a paper parcel, left Beverley on 17th instant. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Knight, Guildhall, Beverley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 85. Absconded from Leyes, on 18th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing £ V, in Money, and a pair of gold Earrings :— ELIZABETH GREEN, 02 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, slight figure with round shoulders; dressed in dark water- proof, and black bonnet; a widow; late of Lewis ; a tramp. She came to Lewes Workhouse about 3 months ago, ill, where she remained till about 7 weeks ago, and stated she had [ been in the Brighton and Eastbourne " Unions. Infor mation to the Chief Constable's Office, or Mr. Superintendent Stolen on 24th instant:— a bright ribbed black cloth Coat, ( new), single breasted, fashionable make, pockets behind, ticket pocket; a pair of light grey cloth Trousers, fly- fronts, side pockets, unlined ; a pair of dark grey cioth Trousers, fly fronts, side pockets, unlined ; a plain black cloth Waistcoat, single breasted, plain fronts, no collar; diagonal black cloth Waistcoat, single breasted, plain fronts ; a blue and white checked cotton Shirt, imitation woollen ; ditto, blue, white and red mixture, imitation woollen ; a silk Handkerchief, white middle, slate and black border ; a ditto, white with black spots, the spots are faded ; a white cashmere Muffler ; a Penknife, with white haft, and two blades. By a man about 32 or 33 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender build, sallow complexion; dressed in the stolen clothes, and at 2 30 the same morning he was without boots; he left his old clothes behind, viz. :— a blue pilot reefer jacket, a brownish grey plaid slack back jacket, light grey plaid vest, cotton cord trousers, plaid cotton shirt, and a woollen shirt, red and white scarf, and old blucher boots, all of which are very dirty and very far worn. Charged on warrant, for misappropriation of Money to a very large amount:— JOSEPH BENTLEY, stock broker, 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, fair com- plexion, round features, light moustache, slight beard ; well dressed, gentlemanly appearance, weak voice. Had in his possession, and may dispose of, Bank of England Notes as follows :—£ 100— dated 2nd January, 1879, Manchester No. •• 16734, and 3rd March, 1879. Liverpool, No. 32598 £ 50— dated 18th January, 1878, Manchester, No. 63551, and 63552 ; £ 20 — dated 6th January, 1878, Manchester, No. 90031; £ 10- No. 47586 and 21099. Information to Chief Constable Ward, Borough Police Office, Huddersfield — Bow- street, March 25. Description of FRED COOK, alias HARRY SIDNEY, charged on warrant with larceny, bailee of £ 8 in Gold 2 Boston lever Watches ; and a grey ulster Coat, with two pockets in laps, and two breast pockets, all outside, two ticket pockets in cuffs of sleeves, is made to wear with waist belt, the latter was not taken away :— about 30 years of age, > 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, and moustache, whiskers shaved off; dressed in dark mixture suit, red or magenta neck tie, felt or cashmere hat, lined with cork, side- spring boots, hand made, imitation laces, may be wearing the stolen coat; he is fluent in speech, fond of Bpeaking, and may seek employment at auction vans, was formerly employed in describing the animals at Manders, or Wombwells menageries. Information to Inspector Dain, Winterton, Brigg, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, March 24. SOHUN, alias HART, alias ALLEY, a German, a native o£ Berlin, 31 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender build,, fair complexion, light hair, very thin, no whiskers or mous- tache, scar on crown of head, which is slightly bald, and which he states was received during the Franco- German War ; dressed in a brown ribbed mixture cloth overcoat, black ribbed dress coat, light grey striped cloth trousers, blucher boots, soft billycock hat with a satin band round it, and yellow' gloves. States he is a photographer and bookbinder, and speaks with a strong German accent. He takes respectable lodgings, expects his luggage by the next train, and absconds with anything ho can lay his hands on. Information to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, N. K. Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 2. Committed for trial at the next Merionethshire Quarter Sessions, 7th instant, charged with larceny of £ 4 from the person, at Bala:—' GEORGE OWEN MASON, native of near Oswestry, 23 years of age, 5 fe? t 2 inches high, brown curly hair, brown eyes, bracelet on left wrist, and several coal mark cuts about his forehead, crooked nose. Information at Chief Constable's Office, Dolgelley, or to P. C. Jones, Police Office, Bala, Merionethshire.— Bow- street, April 2. Escaped from custody at Tunstall Police Station, on 27th ultimo, charged with felony : — JOHN DAVIS, name supposed fictitious, a carpenter, 30 or 34 years of age, 5 ft. 3j inches high, fresh complexion, freckled", dark hair, sandy moustache, grey eyes, long face, prominent nose, with a cut mark on left side ; dressed in soft grey cloth hat, grey plaid jacket, brown cloth trousers, dark cloth vest, woollen plaid scarf, and lace- up boots.
