POLICE GAZETTE. F> 2 ATIT& ORFTG. CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in easts of Felony md of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and agairut Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate at possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6428 MONDAY, MARCH 15, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed • offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably neccssary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to tho Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and « f Absentees and'Desertcrs from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE G AZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly.—( 1) The amount of tie reward. ( 2) Tho conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'ne persons forwarding ' them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the appreheasion of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the addr. ess or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Committed for trial at the next Dorset Assizes, for arson:— FRANCIS CONNOR, a tramp, states he is a native of Dublin, 20 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fair com- plexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, light brown whiskers, meeting under the chin, saud v beard, slight sandy moustache, and medium build ; dressed in old light brown coat, grey • vest, dark mixture trousers, dark mixture cap, and old elastic- side boots. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Dorset Constabulary, Wimborne.— Bow- street, March 10. Suspected of setting fire to several Ricks, at Baydon, on < 5th instant:— a man 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair, moustache, and whiskers meeting under the chin, smart appearance, slight build; dressed shabby- genteel, having on two brownish tweed coats, cotton cord or moleskin trousers, turned up at the bottom of the legs, • showing his white stockings, old heavy lace- up watertight or navvy boots, cut down round the ankle, black bowler hat, a native of Molton Yorks, and frequents racing stables, as a tout. ARCHIBALD MILLER, described in the Police Gazette of 10th instant, charged on warrant with forgery, has been apprehended.— Bow- street, March 15. roBBerY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the Bristol Race Course, [ on 12th instant :— an old, silver lever Watch, with silver and gold dial, supposed No. 587, engraved inside with the name of ' Israel Knight.' Information to Mr. Superintendent Drewett, Flax Bourton, Bristol, or to the Deputy Chief Constable, Glastonbury, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, March 15. Stolen at the Rugby Grand Military Steeple Chases, on 9th instant :— A ( gold double bottom dome hunting Watch, silver dial, No. 8270, makers Brockbank and Atkins, London. A sold hunting Watch, with initials outside ' W. W. H.', No. 1912, maker McKay, Edinboro'. A gold Watch, with crest engraved on case. A silver lever Watch, single case, No. 38351, maker Weatherby, Market Drayton, Salop. A silver Watch, No. 38351. A pair of Binoculars,' D. A, 68th Foot, Ulundi, Zululand, 1879,' scratched on. Information to Mr. Superintendent Palmer, Rugby, Warwick- shire.— Bow- street, March 15. Stolen at Wye Steeple Chases, on 11th instant:— An open- face silver lever Watch, foreign make, no maker's name or number. A silver lever Watch, capped and jewelled, No. 97680, maker's name ' Edward Hayward, Ashford,' gold albert Chain attached. An old- fashioned gold Watch; and a gold Scarf Pin, with white stone in centre. A large silver Watch, maker's name ' Coltanes, Folkestone, No. 1546,' a plain Chain attached. A gold Pin, representing a boy at leap- frog over a post. A silver Watch, with gold Chain, Guinea, aud Half- guinea attached- Information to Mr. Superintendent Noakes, Kent Constabu- lary, AshioTd.— Bow- street, March 15. Stolen at Stone, during the night of 11th instant:— a Watch ( recovered), and a long silver Guard, with watch Key attached. By FANNY HAINES, a prostitute, about 46 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, light complexion and hair, turning grey, stout build, and full red face ; dressed in long dark cloth mixture ulster, black drpss, black straw hat, trimmed with black velvet, black lace fall, and blue ribbon, tied in a bow round her neck. She has lately lived at 3, Chapel- street, Stafford, and also at Burton- on- Trent. In- formation to Mr. Superintendent Crisp, Stone, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension. — Bow- street, March 15. Stolen at Rugby Races, on 9th instant:— a gold lever demi hunter Watch, No. 04180, maker Frodsham, Strand. £ 5 reward will be given on apprehension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the watch. Information to Mr. Superintendent Palmer, Rugby, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, March 12. Stolen on 6th instant, from the person, in Preston :— a silver lever Watch, No. 1916, maker Yates, Preston ; £ 2 8s. in Money; and a£ seal skin Cap. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston. -~ fiow- street, March 10. Stolen from the person, in Stockport, about 7.45 p. m 4th instant :— a silver lever Watch, No. 13331, makers name Josiali Davies, Stockport, had attached a gold Albert Guard, curb pattern, stamped 9- carat. £ 2 reward will be given on apprehension of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the Watch. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport. — Bow- street, March 10. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of 11th instant, a house was entered and stolen therein :— 3 black cloth Jackets, one braided back, front and cuffs ; one diagonal cloth, very little trimming, and one plain cloth, with four pieces of fringe at the back, tabs at side in imitation of pockets ; 3 silver Table Spoons, a dessert Ditto, silver Sugar Tongs, antique ( shape of scissors) ; a silver butter Knife ; a silver Tea Spoon ; plated Sugar Tongs ; a ditto Toast Rack ; a fancy plated Spoon; 2 small fancy Spoons ; a plated 5- bole Cruetstand ; an old fashioned plated Caddy Spoon; 6 plated desert Forks ; 5 plated Table Forks ; and a plated pickle Fork with white bone handle. The thieves took with them a bottle of Gin labelled ' Old Tom'. Infor mation to Mr. Superintendent Pike, Police Station, St. Alban's, Herts.— Bow- street, March 15. During the night of 12th instant, the parish church of Aldrington, Sussex, was broken into and six Surplices ( white linen) stolen— four men's sizes, two old, two new ; two boys' size, nearly new. Information to Mr. Superintendent Baldwin, Patcham, Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or any Police Station in Sussex.— Bow- street, March 15. Stolen at Aston Clinton, on 10th instant:— an old silver pair- case Watch, maker Rentnor, London, No. 9246. By a man, 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, full face, fresh complexion-, little or no whiskers, proportionate figure ; dressed in dark clothes, felt list, or cloth cap ; has with liirn a pedlar's certificate, obtained at Abingdon in July, 1879 ; he hawks needles, buttons, & c., frequents low lodging- houses, travels the counties of Berks, Bucks, Beds, and Herts ; he was traced to Hemel Hempstead, where lie disposed of some of the stolen property. Information to Mr. Superintendent Denson. Bucks Constabulary, Aylesbury, or to Inspector Andrews, Wendover, Tring, Bucks.— Bow- street, March 15. About 2' 55 a. m. on 13th instant, the office of Messrs. Scott and Harris, Star Japan Works, Bilston, was entered ( by carefully removing the paues from the window), and stolen therein :— sixty penny Stamps, and one one- shilling Stamp ; a set of Drawing Instruments, including a brass diagram, and a buckhorn ditto, marked ' D. Morris' in mahogany or rosewood veneered case, lined with green baize, • small oblong brass plate on lid set in with claws, one of which is broken off; a 3- bladed pocket Knife, tortoise- shell handle, with small silver plate with name ' J. Hardy' engraved thereon ; one door, three drawer and one clock Keys ; and a lead Whistle. An attempt was made by drilling to break open an iron safe. Information to Mr. Chief Superintendent Longden, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 15. At a cottage situate off the Weston- road, near Stafford, during the afternoon of 13th instant, and stolen :— a grey mixture tweed corded Jacket, pockets on hips, aud one inside left breast, the cuffs are bouud with black braid ; a single breasted black c'oth Vest, with rolled collar, a pocket beneath left breast; an old- fashioned silver Watch, supposed verge, number and name unknown ; and a Sovereign. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford. — Bow- street, March 15. During the night of lltli instant, a burglary was com « mitted at Testwood House, Tolton, and stolen therein :— a horses Hoof, shod aud mounted in silver as an ink stand, with laurel leaf on top, engraved ' Sam Hall, shot on * * * ' ( date unknown); a silver Stand, to hold scent bottles, square bottom, and round top ; a filagree plated Egg, to hold matches, and plated spoon affixed to bottom, gilt inside of egg. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent White, Hants Constabulary, Lyndhurst— Bow- street, March 15. During- the night of 9th instant, a house at Iver was broken and entered and stolen therein :— A pair of silver Sugar Tongs. 3 ditto Tea Spoons. A Dessert Spoon. ( All marked with the crest of an oak tree). A silver Cigar Case, crest— a cock. A curve amber Cigar Tube. A gold signot Ring, crest of an oak tr « e. A ditto Pen and Pencil- case. About £ 50 or £ 60 in Gold, Silver an. i Notes— supposed 3 £ 5 and and 2 £ 10 Notes. A gold Ferrule from an umbrella. Also several blank Cheques on the London and County Bank, at Watford. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks, or to Inspector Sapwell, Iver, Bucks.— Bow- street, March 12. Stolen by means of burglary, on 6th inst, at Cannock :— a long double- breasted dark woollen cloth Overcoat, nearly new, bound with black braid, flap pockets on hips, pocket outside left breast and ticket pocket right side, covered cloth buttons, and button holes have been recently repaired, and ' Nicholls, Launceston,' ou collar loop; a pair of light lace- up Boots, Levant tops, toecapped, brass eyelet holes and hooks; and about 25s. in small Silver and Copper Money. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hackney, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Sergeant Cockerell, Police Station, Cannock, near Stafford. — Bow- street, March 10. During the night of 3rd instant, a burglary was com- mitted at Shrublands, Sunningdale, and stolen therein :— 1 cruet Stand, and the Tops of the bottles, marked ' R. J. IC.'; 1 mustard Spoon, marked ' R. J. K.'; 1 tea Spoon, marked ' S. E. P.'; 1 pair of sugar Tongs, queen's pattern ; 1 Muffineer ; 4 salt Cellars, glasses left, all the above are silver ; 12 plated. Kuives and Forks ; 2 Carvers; 1 box of Cigars ; 1 box of Cigarettes ; 1 Overcoat; and 18s. worth of Postage Stamps. Also from the residence of Mr. Norris :— a brown click Ulster, four outside pockets, and ticket pocket on sleeve ; a blue ribbed Overcoat, three outside pockets ; a pair of brown kid Gloves, man's size; a black wood Pipe, silver mounted, amber mouthpiece. Information to Mr. Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Con- stabulary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, March 8. Between 7 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 3rd instant, a dwelling house was broken into by taking out a pane of glass, in the parlour window, at Townrow- green, Rotherfield, Sussex, and stolen therein :— a grey cloth Jacket, boy's size, two pockets, one on each side, three dark bone buttons down the front ; a dark round Frock, about half- worn, 4 or 5 white bone buttons in front, one on gageing behind, and one on each wristband ; 3 common Basins, two with blue flowers ; 2 Tea- cups, with sea flowers ; and a small metal Tea- spoou. Supposed by two men, one about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, an umbrella mender ; dressed in dark clothes ; the other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, travels the country mending chairs. Information to the Superintendent of Police, Uckfield.— Bow- street, March. 8. Between 10 p. m. 3rd, and 3 a. m. 4th instant, the pawn- shop of Mr. Thomas Mills, Smethwick, was broken into, and stolen therein :— 1 gold horseshoe scarf Pin ; 1 gold scarf Pin, set with coral hand ; 1 round silver albert Chain ; 4 long silver Guards, one with 3 or 4 small American Coins attached, one steel Albert Chain, with Pistol and Locket attached ; 2 pairs of woollen cord Trousers, 1 pair of black Trousers, 1 pair of grey plaid Trousers, man's size, new ; 5 men's Vests, one black cloth, one light grey plaid, one dark grey, one dark tweed, all new ; 1 full- sized Counterpane, blue and white stripes ; and 2 round pewter salt Cups and Spoons. Entrance effected by prizing the shutters, placing a treacle plaster on the glass in window and breaking it. Information to Sergeant Hinton, Smethwick, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen bylmeans of burglary, during the night of 25th or morning of 26th ultimo :•— a japanned round tin Box, handle on top, containing a lady's Dress, mohair and silk Material, blue, drab and white coloured, made with three kilting.", pockets in each side, watch pocket ou side, broad sailor collar, white bone buttons, and blue silk trimming ; 2 cotton Antimacassars, one of them unfinished, pattern— bird ar. rl cherry tree, the other hearts and crosses ; also a woollen Anti- maccassar, scarlet, green, blue and yellow coloured; also a suit of man's Clothes, nearly new, brown cloth, and red and whito mixture. A mau, named JAMES PICKERSGILL, a bricklayer, lately residing at Monkton Moor, is in custody aud reminded until loth instant ; about 42 yeara of agu, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, grey eyes, dark brown hair, heavy POLICE GAZETTE. March 15 dark brown moustache, and bald on top of head. States that he has - worked in Leeds, Sheffield, London, Bedford and Liverpool, and that he was detained at West Hartlepool 12 years ago with respect to the sudden death of a woman named Ann Robinson. None of the above described property has been traced. Another man is reported to have been seen) acting in concert with Pickersgill, and is described as being dressed in dark clothing, and about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high. Photograph of prisoner in custody will be forwarded on application. Information to Mr. Superintendent Metcalfe, City Police Office, Ripon, Yorkshire— Bow- street, March 8. Howells, Constabulary Office, Shrewsbury; or to Sergeant Davis, Much Wenlock, Salop.— Bow- street, March 12. Description of GEORGE HARGRAVES, otherwise HORACE WILLIAM MOORE, late mess sergeant 1st Bat- I talion, 13th Regiment at Devonport, - who absconded on | 5th instant, stealing a » d embezzling Money:— he is 30 toI 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 iaches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, stout and soldier- like ; a clerk ; said to be a native of Blackburn, Lancashire. Was last heard of at Hitchin, Herts, where his wife is now living. Information to Head Constable Lynn, Devonport, who holds the warrant for " his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 12. Stolen between 8 and 8.30. p. m. 6th instant, at Bacup :— , a blue pilot, cloth Overcoat, with velvet collar, two pockets , outside down the front, one pocket right breast, black covered l buttons, double breasted, large size, and. part worn. A similar ] , Coat was offered for pledge, between 8 and 9 p. m. by a man , about 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, full fresh face, c slight light whiskers, if any ; wore a black cap, and dark 5 cloth coat. ' The man described in Police Gazette of 22nd December last, charged with stealing Clothes from a public- house in HORSE AID CATTLE STEALING, Stolen on the night of 4th instant, at Sticklepath, Sampford Courtenay, Devon a dark bay Mare, in foal, about 14 hands high, 8 years old, tail cut square, off pm ricked in ; supposed by a man, a native of Chagford, Devon, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, black curly hair, large dark whiskers, dark complexion, dark eyes ; dressed in dark cloth suit, jim crow hat, nailed lace- up boots. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hasted, N. Division, Devon Constabulary. Bow, or to Sergeant Furslow, North Tawton.— Bow- street, March 15. The Pony, Cart and Harness, left at Windsor on 3rd inst. by two men, and advertised in ' Police Gazette' of 12th inst., has been owned by Mr. R. Thurgur, of Walworth, who had let it out on hire. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hayes, Police Office, Windsor, Berks— Bow- strcst, March 15. Absconded on 5th instant, stealing a brown Mare, 6 yTS. » old, rising 15 hands high, bad mane ; a set of black leather silver- plated Harness, patent leather hansom pad ; a riding Saddle and Bridle; two Whips; and a Scotch collie Dog, plain brass collar :— BLEACH, a coachman, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, light brown hair and whiskers, and shaved on chin and lip ; dressed in a light brown tweed suit; has been a soldier. Is well known at Tunbridge Wells and Brighton. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investiga- tions, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.- Bow- street, March 12. Stolen near Ross, at 8 p. m. on 5th instant : sixty fat Sheep, recovered in Worcester Market the next day, having been driven to Ross Railway Station, at 9 p. m., and sent by rail to Worcester the same night, in the name of JOHN DAVIES : By JAMES RUDGE, a convict on license, Reg. No. B. G. Y. 1243, 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, bald on top of head, small whiskers under chin, blue eyes, scar on top of forehead, ruptured both sides, muscle on left arm displaced, a baker by trade, and is a native of Linton, Lea, or " Upton Bishop, near Ross ; dressed in a dark jacket and vest, light or grey trousers, and deer- stalker hat, and carried a small black parcel, tied up in oilcloth, and a walking stick; he was convicted at Hereford- shire Quarter Sessions, October 17, 1864, of sheep stealing, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and at Usk Quarter Sessions, March 26, 1872, of sheep stealing, and was sentenced to 10 years penal servitude, and 7 years police supervision ; his photograph may be had on application. And a man, name unknown, about 43 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather stout build, dark hair and whiskers, meeting under chin, small moustache, swarthy face ; dressed in a blue pilot cloth suit, and black hard low- crowned hat, and had a respectable appearance ; was seen in Worcester the next morning. Information to Mr. Superintendent Smith, Police Station, Ross, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, March 10. Left at a public- house in Eton, Bucks, on 26th ultimo :— a small spring Cart, newly painted very dark slate, nearly black, patent axletree, several new spokes in near wheel ; a dark bay cob Horse, black legs, 13J hands high, 6 years old ; a set of Harness, silver gilt mounted, with silver gilt squares on brow band, and rosettes at the ends. By 2 men, one about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high ; dressed respectable. The other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high ; dressed in dark coat and ulster. Had also a large cart and a chesnut horse, 15 hands high, which the oldest man took away about 2nd or 3rd instant, name on the large cart ' Biles, Peckham, Surrey.' Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunham, Slough, or Inspector Pearmar, Eton, Bucks.— Bow- , March 10. Hertford, has not yet been apprehended. Also the man JOSEPH alias ROBERT GORDON, advertished in Police Gazette of 12th January last, charged with larceny as a bailee of two pairs of Boots, has not yet been apprehended. Information to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Bow- st., March 10. Absconded from Wisbeach, Isle of Ely, on 12th ultimo : ROBERT LOCKEY REDDING, superintendent of police, charged on a warrant with embezzlement. He is 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, sandy whiskers, clean chin, grey or hazel eyes, slight figure, weighs about 10 stones ; dressed in blue trousers and overcoat; wart on centre knuckle of right hand, supposed lost a front tooth from upper jaw ; a native of Berwick- on Tweed ; was a elerk at Messrs. Grant Brothers and Co., bankers, & c., 24, Lombard- street, London, about 6 years ago. Has a brother, a medical student, in London. Has friends at Brigg, Lincoln- shire. May be accompanied by a young female, who is a singer. He stated he had obtained an appointment at Fulham Waterworks. Information to Chief Constable Ferres, Ely, Cambridgeshire.— Bow- street, March 10. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Charged with larceny :— JOSEPH SMITH, a gipsy tinker, 52 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair ; dressed in dirty cord trousers and jacket, wideawake cap ; stated he belonged to Huntingdon, and that he had a pedlar's certificate. And SARAH SMITH, a gipsy, ( supposed wife of above) travels with tin ware, fresh complexion, about 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, 61 years of age ; a little girl about 11 or 12 years of age is travelling with them. Information to Inspector Smith, Police Station, Woburn Beds, who holds warrants for their apprehensions.— Bow- street, March 15. Description of JESSE ATKINSON, late of Alford. charged on warrant with embezzlement :— ho is by trade draper, but during the last 2 years has been employed as commercial traveller, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or inches high, dark complexion, black hair, long black whiskers and moustache, generally dressed in black cloth frock coat, grey mixture trousers, and high silk hat. His photo, will be. forwarded on application. Information to Inspector Stennett, Alford, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, March 12.
