Th » Names of Accomplices and Accessaries, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the pei- Bon requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE limy be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should'Nbe made anil sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, kid an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement,- fortAlcd to tho Editor for insertion. Ae no charge is mite for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addres^ d to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and^ Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for • insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. with red stripes, and black hat with feather. At their lodgings was found two reversible waterproof Overcoats, quite new, supposed stolen. They are travelling pickpockets, and have recently been at Southsea and Brighton. Information to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, March 5. Stolen fiom the person in the Horse Fair, Dudley, on lst instant:— a gold keyless Watch, No. 41298, chronometer balance, white face, small seconds hand, and bow broken off. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves and recovery of the watch. Information to Mr. Chief Superintendent Burton, Borough Police Office, Dudley, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, March 3. Supposed stolen from the person of a gentleman, at Rainton, on 24th ultimo :— a gold patent lever Watch, No. 4823, cream dial, steel bauds, maker E. Drake, Halifax, and a gold Albert Chain, curb pattern, with gold Seal, Key, and Locket, with photo on one side and hair on the other attached. Information to Acting Inspector Hutchinson, Wath, Ripon, N. R. Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 3. Stolen from the person at Worcester Races, on 27th ultimo :— an open faced gold English lever Watch, with • W. H. Gwynn' engraved on back, aud ' T. B. Brown' scratched on dome. Iuformation to Sergeant Sommers, City Police, Worcester.— Bow- street March 3. It is particularly requested that persons receiving Copies of this Gazette, owing to the insufficiency or incorrectness of the address and misdelivery by the Post Office, or who are not entitled to receive them by reason of the abolition of the Office to which the Gazette is addressed or otherwise, should at once return them through the Post to the Editor, Bow Street, London. Attention is called to 7 Will. 4, and 1 Vic., c. 36, s. 31 :— " Every person who shall fraudulently retain, or shall wilfully secrete, or keep or detain * * * a post letter which ought to have been delivered to any other person * * * * shall * * be guilty of a misdemeanour." " PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS, FORGERY. A forged £ 5 Note, of the new issue of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Bank, bearing date lst October, 1879, aud purporting to be signed by the manager, A Holdsworth, and entered by John B. Brown, has been uttered :— it bears the No. 5086 ; the Bank have issued no notes of their New Issue, hearing a higher No. than 4OOO. £ 100 reward will be given for such information as may lead to the conviction of the forsrer. on application to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield. — Bow- street, March 8. Uttered a forged Cheque at Ludlow, on 24th ultimo : a man who signed as GEORGE HUGHES, No. 14, Bridge- street, Bristol, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 inehes high, proportionate build, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, slightly knock- kneed ; dressed in black. He called at a grocers in Leominster, and represented himself travelling for £. S. and A. Robinson, wholesale stationers, Victoria- street, Bristol, that Mr. Smith, the traveller, was ill, and he came instead, he asked for a blank cheque, being after bank hours, one was given him for which he paid a penny, and filled it up and got cashed in Ludlow. A warrant is held for his appre- hension by Mr. Superintendent Brooks, Ludlow, Shropshire, — Bow- street, March 5. Description of ROBERT BLOUNT, brewer's agent, late of Burton- on- Trent, charged on warrant with uttering a forged Cheque for £ 45 :— about 26 years of age, 6 feet high, medium build, fair complexion, light hair, little or no whiskers, light moustache, a wen on left side of neck nearly under the ear; dressed in a new lightish suit, breeches and leggings, but frequently changes his dress ; well educated, and gentle- manly in appearance. Information to Mr. Superintendent Sims, Police Office, Woodville, Burton- on- Trent.— Bow- street, March 3. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of 3rd instant, a burglary was com- mitted at Shrublauds, Sunningdale, and stolen therein :— 1 cruet Stand, and the Tops of the bottles, marked ' R. J. K.'; 1 mustard Spoon, marked ' R. J. K.'; 1 tea Spoon, marked ' S. E. P.'; 1 pair of sugar Tongs, queen's pattern ; 1 Muffineer ; 4 salt Cellars, glasses left, all the above are silver ; 12 plated Knives and Forks ; 2 Carvers ; 1 box of Cigars ; 1 box of Cigarettes ; 1 Overcoat; and 18s. worth of Postage Stamps. Also from the residence of Mr. Norris :— a brown click Ulster, four outside pockets, and ticket pocket on sleeve ; a blue ribbed Overcoat, three outside pockets ; a pair of brown kid Gloves, man's size ; a black wood Pipe, silver mounted, amber mouthpiece. Information to Mr. Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Con- stabulary, Chertsey.-- Bow- street, March 8. Between 7 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 3rd instant, a dwelling house was broken into by taking out a pane of glass, in the parlour window, at Townrow- green, Rotherfield, Sussex, and stolen therein : a grey cloth Jacket, boy's size, two pockets, one on each side, three dark bone buttons down the front ; a dark round Frock, about half- worn, 4 or 5 white bone buttons in front, one on gageing behind, and one on each wristband ; 3 common Basins, two with blue flowers ; 2 Tea- cups, with sea flowers ; and a small metal Tea- spoon. Supposed by two men, one about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, an umbrella mender ; dressed iu dark clothes ; the other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, travels the country mending chairs. Information to the Superintendent of Police, Uckfield.— Bow- street, March. 8. Between 10 p. m. 3rd, and 3 a. m. 4th instant,, the pawn- shop of Mr. Thomas Mills, Smethwick, was broken into, and stolen therein :— 1 gold horseshoe scarf Pin ; 1 gold scarf Pin, set with coral hand ; 1 round silver albert Chain ; 4 long silver Guards, one with 3 or 4 small American Coins attacher, one steel Albert Chain, with Pistol aud Locket attached; 2 pairs of woollen cord Trousers, 1 pair of black Trousers, 1 pair of grey plaid Trousers, man's size, new ; 5 men's Vests, one black cloth, one light grey plaid, one dark grey, one dark tweed, all new; I full- sized Counterpane, blue and white stripes ; and 2 round pewter salt Cups and Spoons. Entrauce effected by prizing the shutters, placing a treacle plaster on the glass in window and breaking it. Information to Sergeant Hinton, Smethwick, Staffordslfoe.— Bow- arec', March 8. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Remanded at Hastings, until llth instant, charged with . attempting to pick pockets :— THOMAS HANLEY, 40 to 45 years of age 5 feet 4} ins. high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers shaved off, dark moustache cut short, sunken eyes, high cheek bones ; dressed in blue overcoat, black coat under, dark tweed trousers, and hard low crowned black hat; has a small mole under left arm. ELIZABETH HANLEY, 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet high, dark brown hair, large full face, high cheek bones, speaks with an lash and slightly nasal accent; dressed in dark grey dress, black jacket and shawl under, grey petticoat Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of, 25th or morning of 26th ultimo : - a japanned round tin Box, handle on top, containing a lady's Dress, mohair and silk Material, blue, drab and white coloured, made with three kilting*, pockets in each side, watch pocket on side, broad sailor collar, white bone buttons, and blue silk trimming ; 2 cotton Antimacassars, one of them unfinished, pattern— bird ar. d cherry tree, the other hearts and crosses ; als > a woollen Anti- maccassar, scarlet, green, blue and yellow coloured ; also a suit of man's Clothes, nearly new, brown cloth, and red and whito mixture. A man, named JAMES PICKERSGILL, a bricklayer, lately residing at M onkton Moor, is in custody and remanded until 10th instant; about 42 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, grey eyeS, dark brown hair, heavy dark brown moustache, and bald on top of head. States that he has worked in Leeds, Sheffield, London, Bedford and Liverpool, and that he was detained at West Hartlepool 12 years ago with respect to the sudden death of a woman named Ann Robinson. None of the above described property has been traced. Another man is reported to have been seen acting in concert with Pickersgill, and is described as being dressed in dark clothing, and about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high. Photograph of prisoner in custody will be forwarded on application. Information to Mr. Superintendent Metcalfe, City Police Office, Ripon, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen about 10 p. m. on 3rd instant, at Market Har- borough : — a cash Box, containing about £ 6 or £ 7 in Gold ; a Crown Piece, worn smooth ; a Fourpenny Piece, with figure 4 in centre ; a bended Sixpenny Piece, with mark of teeth on it; a lion Sixpence, with hole in it; a lion Shilling, well preserved; and sundry papers, namely :— old Licenses, tax Papers, and Bank Receipts ; also £ 25 in Gold, in an old dirty white pocket; a gold Ring, with blue stones, ( two of which are missing), and a pearl in centre; a gold Ring, with three red stones, the ring is cracked through. By a mau who took lodgings at the hotel on lst instant, and said he was a traveller: — about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, rather stout and of dissipated appearance, short sandy hair, a beard and moustache of about a fortnight's growth ; dressed in brown or dark clothes, high silk hat, elastic- side boots, sharp toes, thin soles, fiue leather, much greased, block fronts, and machine stitched ; he carried with him a new black shiny leather bag. Another man who was seen with him, is believed to be implicated :— about 25 or 30 years of age, 5 ft. 9 inches high, slim made, hollow cheeks, delicate but not bad looking, wore a dark brown moustache, little whiskers, no beard ; dressed in dark clothing, hard felt hat, and boots similar to other man ; these men occasionally change hats, and are believed to be betting men. The drawers in the bed- room were forced open by a jemmy. The thief made his exit from the bed- room window ( about 15 feet from ground); a dark green silk Umbrella, with heavy cane handle, and a pair of new brown buttoned leather leggings, reaching above knees were left behind by the thieves. Information to Mr. Superintendent Holloway, County Constabulary Office, Market Harborough, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, March 5. Wanted on a charge of housebreaking .-— JOHN TOM- LINSON, alias JAMES CARRUTHERS, JAS. GRIBBIN, JAMES PARKER, THOMAS WILLIAMS, DANIEL HIGGINS and JAMES KIRBY, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, cut short, about three weeks growth, sandy beard and mous- tache on 20th ultimo, and moderately built; dress - d in ribbed fustian sleeve vest, back and sleeves are moleskin, moleskin or ribbed trousers, soft black billycock hat, strong lace- up boots, with steel plates on toes and heels, and a bricksetter. He has been convicted as follows :— Oct. lst, 1870, stealing a pier Glass at Liverpool, as James Parker, 5 months; June, 1871, housebreaking, Bodmin Sessions, as Daniel Higgins, 12 months; Dec., 1872, stealing 2 Watches, Liverpool Sessions, as Thomas Williams, 7 years and 7 years penal supervision ; April, 1873, free pardon in convict prison ; has been in the 57th Regt. ; Jan., 1875, felony, Carlisle Sessions, as James Gribbin, 12 months ; Jan 21st, 1878, housebreaking, Wigan Sessions, as James Carruthers, 6 months; and July 22nd, 1878, housebreaking at Bolton, October Sessions, 12 months. Information to Chief Constable Alison, Wigan, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 5. A reward of £ 10 will be paid to any person who gives information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered, for the burglary at Conisbro', advertised in Police Gazette of 7th January, 1880, on application to Mr. Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Doncaster.— Bow- street, March 5. Between 11 p. m. 26th and 8 a. m. 27th ultimo, a Post Office, at Chenies, Bucks, was entered and stolen therefrom :— a small brass skeleton Timepiece, and a French alarm Ditto ; a number of ladies Scarves various co'curs ; a quantity of common Jewellery, consisting of Brooches, Lockets, and Chains; 6 silver Thimbles; a large quantity of English and Foreign Postage Stamps, old and new; three small brass letter Weights, with Government Stamp upen them ; 4 German silver table Spoons, ' J. C. G.' on handles; a lady's small Companion, complete ; and a little ' Money from the till. Supposed by a man, 22 years of age 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, jbrown hair, and no whiskers ; respectably dressed in dark cutaway coat, black hard hat, flat on top, grey cloth trousers, and polished boots, who was seen in the. village on the two previous days and who made particular inquiry of school children respecting the people and premises at Post Office. Information to Inspector Hall, Chesham, Bucks. — Bow- street, March 3. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Left at Windsor, on 3rd instant:— a bay horse Pony, about 12 hands high, large fore top, long tail; set ef old brass mounted Harness ; a small villiage Cart, painted dark green, picked out with light green, iron back to seat, two bars, eight new spokes iu off wheel, three new spokes in near wheel ; a small old handbag, containing drapery cards. By 2 men, one about 30 years of age, about 5 feet ( i inches high,' left arm stiff, dark complexion; the other lias a fa; r complexiou, and dressed in a pea jacket. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hayes, Police Office, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, March 8. Stolen on the night of 27th ultimo :— a fat half- bred wether Sheep; the carcass was carried away, and the skin and head left behind. Supposed by some excavators, who had been seeking work on the railway, and may have carried the mutton to a distance. Information to Mr. Superinten- dent Hamilton, Norman Cross, Peterborough, Northampton- shire.— Bow- street, March 5. Hired at Leeds, on 10th ultimo, a Horse, Trap, and Harness, and not having been returned in the specified time it is supposed the man who hired them m.. y have disposed of the same :— a grey Cob, 13 bauds high, stout build, ' W. T. B.'. marked on shoes; silver mounted harness, hook on saddle to 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. March 10 hold bearing- rein up is broken ; whitechapel Cart, painted liver - colour, strung with red, the off- side shaft has been splintered near to the step, and one corner cut out of the step, a plate in. tha shape of ' T' on the shaft near the step, also a claSp-; two mackintosh Rugs, vte, otffe lined with green plaid, the other lined with brown and yellow ; he gave the name of THOMAS KIRBY, about 44 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 ins. high, dark complexion, black whiskers, medium build;; dressed in a black cloth suit, brown overcoat, and silk hat - wabbles when walking. Information to Chief Inspector Nortcliffe, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, March 5. Supposed stolen from the front of the ' Greenfield' inn Cutter Height- lane, Tong, near Bradford, about 11 p. m. on the night of 3rd instant : a bay Mare, aged, 13 hnnds high, in good condition, clipped, square tail, scar under jaw, in silver mounted Harness, and black painted dog Cart, strung with red, blue cloth cushions, and plated silver wheel caps, marked ' Speight, Manning- lane.' Information to Mr. Super- intendent Ball, West Riding of Yorkshire Constabulary, Bradford. — Bow- street, March 5. Committed for trial on 1st instant, at the next ( Quarter Sessions at Northallerton, charged with Cattle stealing:— GEORGE CLARKSON CLUST, 37 years of age, 5 feet 6J inches high, brown hair, ginger whiskers and moustache, shaves at chin, blue ( tender) eyes, fair complexion, nose rather crooked, moles on left breast, on left side of abdomen, and under left shoulder ; dressed as a labourer, and wears small gold earrings. States he is a native of Kilham, near Driffield, and has served in the Royal Artillery, but was discharged at St. Johns, New Brunswick, about 10 years ago, and has since worked at the Docks in London, Hull. Middlesbrough, Stockton- on- Tees, and other places. Information to Mr, Superintendent Hunter, Nth. Riding Constabulary, Heworth, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 5. Description of GEORGE JONES ( name supposed fic- titious) wanted, charged with stealing a Horse at Willenhall, on 6th June last :—( supposed a locksmith) about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, red flushing face, dark brown hair, no whiskers, very slight light brown moustache, dark eyes, medium build, has one tooth protruding outside of his mouth, and high cheek bones ; dressed in a dark blue or black cloth jacket, pockets ou hips, dark cloth trousers and vest, hard billycock hat. Stated he came from Bloxwich, Staffordshire. Information to Mr. Chief Superintendent Longden, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 5. frock coat, dark trousers, hob- nailed fesots, soft btock billy- cock hat; is much addicted to drink. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield.— Bow- street, March 5. Absconded on 1st, charged with stealing a pair of solid bronze female Figures, about 14 inches high ; Byron's Works, in 8 volumes, Philidelphia edition; 6 pint bottles, of Champagne :— a man, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair and whiskers, turning grey, ' " ItMiffi^ ithin ' » ui'd ; dress black diagonal frock coat, brown tweed vest, ^ and trousers, round black felt hat; lately resided at Castle- st., Holborn. Information ta the Director C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, March. 5. Description of " WILLIAM WADSWORTH, alias ASHMOORE, charged with stealing 2 Coats, recovered, from the infant school, Clifton, near York, on ist instant:— he is 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, brown hair, brown eyes, fresh complexion, out mark on forehead, aver left eye, is a native of Sheffield or ' neighbourhood ; dressed in a dark grey mixture tweed jacket, old cotton cord trousers, and grey cloth cap, is of dirty appearance, and frequents common lodging rouses and vagrant wards, wa3 liberated from the York Industrial School, about 18 months ago. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hunter, North Ridiig Constabulary, Heworth, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 5. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. CHRISTOPHER LODGE, charged on warrant with stealing 2 Sovereigns from his lodgings at East Orchard, on 3rd ultimo, and advertised in Police Gazette of 9th ultimo, has been arrested at Gcsport, and convicted.— Bow- street. March 8. Wanted for stealing £ 200, in bank of England Notes, from a bedroom, at an hotel, in Bristol, during the night of lst instant:— a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, stout build, fresh complexion, full face, no whiskers, dark heavy moustache ; dressed in a brown plaid, suit, heavy boots, and black bowler hat; and another about 35 or 40 yra. of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, full face, no whiskers, light brown moustache, hair cut short, stout build ; dressed in light coloured suit, and high square top bowler hat. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol.— Bow- street, March 8. Absconded on 4th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement:— AUGUSTUS LAWRENCE, a clerk, late of 38, Lancaster- road, Notting- hill, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, sallow complexion, no beard or moustache, dark hair, weak eyes, wears blue eye glasses ; dressed in dark Petersham overcoat, and high hat, Jewish appearance. In formation to Inspector McWilliam. City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C'-- Bow- street, March 8, Stolen from a lodging- house, at Market Weighton, on morning of 4th inst. :— a long black cloth Coat, lined with thin dark tweed ; a blue serge "" Jacket ; a red and white check ( union) Shirt; a pair of dark striped tweed Trousers ; a pair of black Stockings ; a black soft felt Hat; a leather Belt, with anchor on the buckle ; a white hafted Jack- knife small red and whits woollen tobacco Pouch ; and two small German Books ; by a man about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 ins. high, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, full round face, usually dirty, aquiline high nose, stiff built, native of Hull, been on board a fishing smack, and will most likely make for a seaport to go to sea again. Was in the Yorkshire Catholic Reformatory, at Market Weighton, eight or ten yeais ago, not married ; dressed in a fustian jacket and trousers, with a blue Jersey shirt, hard black ruddy hat, strong lace- up boots, too large for him, with a patch on toe of one of them. He is marked on both thumbs; appears to make a practice of resting at days and travelling at nights. Is suspected of being wanted elsewhere. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wood, Pocklington ; Inspector Robertson. Market Weighton; or to any Officer of E. R. Constabulary. Bow- street, harch 8. Stolen at Northfleet, Kent, during the night of 29th ultimo :— 2 black aud white woollen plaid Shirts; 2 white cotton Essex militia Shirts ; a pair of thick lace Boots, heel specks have lately been changed; and some Provisions. Supposed by a man who formerly lodged at the house, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light complexion, supposed wearing one of the stolen shirts, and the boots, and no doubt belongs to a militia regiment. Information to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham, — Bow- street, March 8. The information from Chief Constable, Newcastle- upon Tyne, relative to WILLIAM MARSHALL HAMILTON, being wanted for larceny, and the reward described in Police Gazette of 31st August, 1877, and subsequent dates, is can celled from this date, 4th March, 1880.— Bow- street, March 5. Absconded on lst instant, charged with stealing £ 109 :• FREDERICK WM.
