POLICE GAZETTE. FIE ATIT& ORTTE. CONTAINING The substance of all Information* received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6422 MONDAY, MARCH 1, 1880. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it. is indispensably accessary that » n information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor KMUCt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and Of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should ke forwarded « n War Office Forms 88 and 88a, to the Editor, us above, for insertion in the POLIO ® GAZETTE. REWARD BILLS. Handbills or other advertisements offering rewards for the discovery of stolen property, or the detection of crime, forwarded for insertion in the Police Gazette, or for distribution by the Metropolitan Police, must state clearly:— ( 1). The amount of the reward. ( 2). The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. I The following form is suggested. " A reward of £ will be paid by of to any person who gives information leading to the apprehension ( or conviction) of the offender or offenders ( and the recovery , of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered), or leading to the discovery of the missing person. P.' in red cotton. Information to the Director C. I. D , Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, March 1. Between 10.15 p. m. 22nd aud ( i a. m. 23rd ultimo, the dwelling house of Henry Dickenson, of Euxton, was entered and stolen therein :— an old- fashioned • silver Watch, verge, double cases, outer case loose, white dial, figures on dial instead of Roman Letters, long hand broken, short hand bent; an old German silver Watch, white dial, hands broken, supposed a verge, of very little value ; and about 4s. in Money. Information to Mr. Superintendent Beetham, Chorley, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 1. smart appearance ; dressed in dark cloth suit, hard bowler hat, and was seen carrying the stolen great coat. Supposed previously convicted. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wood, B Division, Devon Constabulary, South Molton, Devon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 27. On the night of 19 th instant, the house of J. S. Willett, Esq., at Monkleigh, Devon, was entered and stolen therein : — about .£ 75 in Gold and Silver, and £ 50 in Bank of England Notes, Nos. from 55348 to 55357, dated ' 77 | 9, London, 24th . Tune, 1879' Information to Mr. Superintendent Ronsham, Devon Constabulary, Great Torrington.— Bow- street, Feb. 25. Stolen by means of burglary, at Colgate, Horsham, during the night .*> f 22nd instant:— a youth's witney blue Overcoat ; a brown fixture tweed Jacket, pockets behind, aud Yest; a pair of fawn coloured leather driving Gloves ; a new pair of women's No. 5 lace- up Boots ; 2 large pocket Knives, one has got the name ' Turpin' on the blade. " Supposed by a tramp- ing man, recently liberated from prison, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sandy hair, short stubby whiskers aud moustache, about a fortnights growth ; dressed in dark clothes and cap, had the appearance of a low Londou stable- man. Information to Mr. Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, February 25. Suspected of having burglariously entered the dwelling of John Cash, at Grasby, on the night of 17th instant, and stealing two Loaves of Bread, a piece of Bacon :— a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, hair, and whiskers, which are very thin on chin and round mouth, little or none on sides of face, and moustache ; dressed in dark monkey jacket, blue Guernsey under the jacket, and supposed a white slop also, fustian trousers, worsted cap with peak, and speckled border round the cap, and boots with heel plates, four headed nails in front part of heel, square headed nails round sole with round one in centre. JOHN HENRY WOOD ( advertised in the Police Gazette of 25th ultimo), is apprehended.— Bow- st., March 11 Found in a water- closet at 15, Bedford- street, Moss Side, at 11 " 45 p. m. 24th instant:— a male Child, about 4 months old ; it had on an old tartan frock, magenta- coloured jacket, small scarlet shawl, elastic- side patent leather boots, aud • white socks. It is alive, but appears to be suffering from bronchitis. The shawl was fastened tightly round its face and neck. It has been removed to the Chorlton Union Workhouse ; the clothing upon it is old and dirty ; it appears fairly nourished. Information at County Police Officc, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, February 27. FORGERY. Description of a man charged with uttering two forged £ b Bank of England N otes in this borough, on the evening of 20th instant:— he signs the name of ' J. Moss,' is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, heavy moustache, and marks on his ears as if they have been frost bitten ; dressed in dark clothes and long brown tweed waterproof overcoat, hard black bowler hat, and is supposed to have a black cloth overcoat in his possession, and has the appearance of a clerk. His mode of passing the Note is to enter a shop, make a small purchase, such as a pair of gloves, collar, or any other small article, obtains the change, and decamps. Information to Head Constable Walter, Heming way, Cardiff.— Bow- street, February 23. Stolen at Bolton, between 6.30 and 8 p. m. on 22nd inst:— a black cloth worsted frock Coat, bound with braid, supposed two buttons on each cuff, double breasted, two pockets iu lapj behind, aud ore inside left breast; a black cloth worsted morning Coat, three buttons down front, two pockets in laps behind, one inside left breast, bound with braid ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fly fronts, cross pockets, and hip pocket, without linings, supposed knight on buttons; a black cloth worsted dress Waistcoat, trimmed with fancy braid ; a long black worsted ribbed lady's Jacket, trimmed with military braid round back and front; a black satin quilted Skirt; a black French merino Dress, two frills round bottom of skirt, close fitting, buttons down back ; five links of small imitation white pearl Beads ; a breast Pin, onyx stone ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, blue enamelled ; a pair of black star Ear- rings ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, with small balls attached j a pair of gold Ear- rings, with heart- shaped ball in centre; a pair of gold Ear- rings, with crimp drops; a gold breast Pin, diamond shape; a silver Geneva Watch, silver face, ' A. K. ' or 1 A. M. K', monogram on outer case, aud a strong long gold Chain, with gold Key and Seal attached ; a diagonal worsted cloth Overcoat, rather long, with black velvet collar, single breasted, two pookets outside, with laps over, one iuside Mt breast, and ticket pocket; a pair Of opera Glasses, one glass is loose; a lady's black French merino Jacket, trimmed with crape. Supposed by a man, 20 ov 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or inches high, dark complexion, slight whiskers and moustache, hard billy cock hat, black cloth coat, light muffler rouud his neck ; and a woman, who was seen carrying,- i bundle, she had a black shawl on her hgad. A reward of £ i will be paid by Mr. William Kitchen, the owner, to any person who will give information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, leading to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion thereof. — Bow- street, February 27. Stolen at Redstone Hill, between 11 p. m. 23rd and 7 a. m 24th instant :— a doz. desert Knives and Forks, pearl handles; two desert Spoons and sugar Sifter, silver washed with fold' marked with a ' B.'; and a Purse, with about £ 5, and° two silver Coins. Information to the Head Constable, Redhill, Sarrey.— Bow- street, Februaty 27. ROBBERY AND LARCENY fROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person, at Waterloo Coursing Meeting, on 18th ultimo :— a valuable |- plate gold lever Watch, open face, centre seconds, cream coloured dial, ' H. G.' on back of case, maker Joseph Penlington, No. 5729 ; a gold lever hunt- ing Watch, on one side are the initals' F. J.' and. on the other, crest, double eagle. Information to Mr. Superintendent Walsh, County Police Office, Bootle, Lancashire.— Bo^ streft. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Western Villa, Cheltenham, between 5th November last ami 11th instant :— a black satin Dress, new, trimmed white tulle, blaek gimp lace, and beads ; a dove and grey coloured silk Skirt, with a black lace flounce ; a black lace Dress ; a black lace Cloak ; a fawn coloured silk and cashmere Dress : a black velvet Polonaise ; a large square black Brussels lace Shawl; a large lace Mantilla, with deep flounce ; a long lace Scarf, about yards long; a lace Tippet, with sleeves ; 2 yards of red aud black Velvet, and several pieces of Lace; a plated Fish- knife ; a pair of asparagus Tongs with ivory handles ; a pair of Cha'm- pagne Holders, all plated. Information to Mr. Superinten- dent Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham. — Bow- street, Feb- uary 27. On the morning of 24th instant, the house of Mr. John Pedler, snb p Ostraaster, Chittlehampton, Devon, was entered and- stolen therein black cloth great Coat ; a. silver Watch, recovered ; 10a, worth of penny, aud 3s, worth of half- penny Postage; and some Receipt Stamps. WESTACOTT tailor, native of Chittlehampton but has been living in Swansea, South Wales, about. 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, brown hair, slight brown moustache, no whiskers, very Stolen on the morning of 22nd instant, at Stone :— 2 pairs Tops, glove kid leg*, elastic sides, seam up front, patent peak toecap, with small black buttons down side of front seam, black strap up behind, and green ribbon at top of legs : 11 pairs Tops, calf kid, elastic sides, blocked fronts to too with imitation fancy peak toecaps, corded and worked with black silk, top of legs faced with green ribbon, black strap up behind ; 11 pairs Tops, calf kid elastic sides, seams to toe, top of legs faced with blue leather, plain tops in other respects ; 4 pairs girl's Tops, 11 — 1 sizes, calf kid elastic sides, seam up front, patent toecaps, with strap across, and top of legs faced with blue ribbon ; 4 pairs girl's Tops, 11— 1 sizes, calf kid elastic sides, seam up front, patent toecaps, punched holes, and half white chain, and top of legs faced with blye ribbon ; 10 pairs Tops, 7 — 10 sizes, calf kid elastic sides, seam up front, patent toecaps, punched holes, and half white chain, and tops of legs faced with blue ribbon ; 12 pairs women's Soles, stamped with size, and ' B' under- neath ; 11 pairs women's Soles, stamped with size, and ' C ' underneath; 8 pairs girl's 11 — 1 sizes, soles and insoles ; 10 pairs girl's 7 — 10 sizes, soles and insoles ; also some other bottom stuff Insoles, and middle Soles, not stamped, but all can be identified. Information to Mr. Superintendent Crisp, Police Office, Stone, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 25. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Ringmer, between 2and 3 p. m., 17th inst. :—£ 4 10s. in Gold, 10s. in Silver, and some Bronze Money; a gold Ring with stone in it ; a silver Albert Chain, with nine ( id.- pieces and a Shilling attached ; six Razors, four in a case, four black and two white handles ; a Pruning Kuifs, light bone handle ; a Lather Brush, white handle ; a 2- foot Rule ; two Neckties ; a pair of new black cloth Trousers, fly fronts ; and a silver Geneva Watch. By a youth, about 17 years of age, 5 feet I or 2 inches high, dark com- plexion, medium figure, a tramp ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, and cheesecutter cap ; and another about 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, medium figure, a tramp ; dressed iu light jacket, light cord or fustian trousers and vest, bard felt hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Osbon, Lewes, East Sussex.— Bow- street, February 25. Stolen from Shobrooke House, Devon, on 18t, h instant, by means of burglary :— two large Candlesticks; two tea Spoons ; a wine Strainer ; a Seal and Chain ; four Salt- cellars ; a Mustard- pot and cover ; four Decanter- stands; a pair of Sugar- tongs ; bottle Corks and Labels ; a small Teapot; four salt Spoons ; a Pepper- pot and cover ; a Cover to sugar basin; mustard and pepper Spoons; a small tooth powder Box. All the articles are silver, and have crest an Eagle, not spread, with arrow in her claw, and some have a Griffin's Head, in addition ; supposed by a man and woman. ,£ 20 reward will be paid on recovery of the property, and conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter.— Bow- street, February 23, On the 17th instant, a cottage at Cradley, Herefordshire' was broken into and stolen therein :— a silver Watch Guard' small twisted links ; a German silver ditto ; a wood : tobacco Pipe, amber mouthpiece ; a pair of Spectacles, steel frame, small size; a red aud yellow figured Muffler, aud some paste Cakes. Information to Mr. Superintendent Ovens, Police Station, Bromyard, or | to Police Sergeant Smith, Cradley, near Malvern, Herefordshire.— Bmo- street, February 23. During the night of 18th instant, Mr. Samuel R. Deavilles office, situate in Russell- street, Burton- on- Trent, was broken into, and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom ; 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. March 10 — a blue cloth Overcoat., velvet collar, hip pockets, with flaps, double- breasted, bound round each cuff with black braid ; also a Box, containing some small Compasses, such as are used by architects for drawing plans. Information to Mr. Superintendent' Harston, Burton- on- Trent.— Bow- st.. Feb. 23. " Description of two men in custodv, charged with house- breaking, at Clewer :— HENRY LAWSON, 31 years of age, 5 feet 4i iuches high, sallow completion, grey eyes, brown hair, slight whiskers and moustache, medium build ; dressed iu black ribbed coat aud vest, brown tweed trousers, hard round hat, and side- spring boots. JOHN HARDS, 2 > years of age, 5 feet 6£ inches high, fair complexion, brown eyes, darkbrown hair, slight whiskers, no moustache, thin figure ; dressed in Wack. ribbed coat, tweed vest, black cletji tro. u^ s, black hard iialfau8 button boots ; they are Jobbing butchers. Information to Mr. Superintendent Blake, Berks Constabulary, Clewer.— Bow- street, February 23. .. HORSe ANB CATTLE STEALING Stolen on the night of 24th ultimo, at., the Moors, Bitterley :— 3 fat Ewe Sheep, of the Southdown breed, no marks, property of Mr. C. Dotson. Information _ to Mr. Superintendent Caswell, Church Stretton, or to Sergeant Bromwell, Bromfield, Salop.— Bow- street, March 1. Charged with stealing a Horse at Stockport, on 20th ult,, ( advertised in Police Gazette of 23rd ult. :— a man about 20 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, high cheek bones, sharp nose, sandy whiskers- and beard, no mous- tache, medium build, has an impediment in his speech, and twitches his mouth a little when laughing; was wearing a blue reefer coat, much worn, and cloth cap. The Horse was found at a public- house in Glossop with a fawn- coloured horse Rug with two black and red stripes round edge, a Sur cingle, a pair of fawn- coloured Knee- caps, jockey's Cap, Whip, horu stamped in centre of leather, bottom part of one cap torn very much, a Halter ( all the above are nearly new), a snaffle bridle Bit, part worn ; one of the buckle holes cut about an inch long ; all the above articles are supposed stolen. Information to Chief Constable Staples, Stockport, t— Bow- street, March 1. Charged with stealing a Pony at Ben Regis, on 16th instant;— THOMAS PITMAN, alias TOM PUDDY, 27 years of age, 5 feet 3i iuches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, square build, oval face, lost top of left thumb, scar right side of nose ; generally travels about as a drover ; dressed in new suit of dark mixture clothes, the sleeves are much too long, a new pair of lace- up boots, and black stiff bowler hat. He is advertised in Police Gazette^ of 26th ultimo, for not reporting hinself at Crewkerne, being under police supervision. Information to Mr. Superintendent Lavender, Dorset Constabulary, Wareham, who holds warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, February 27. Charged on warrant with stealing Oxen, in Anglesey, on 12th instant:— HUGH THOMAS, native of Llangefni, Anglesey, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, pale com plexion, rather thin features, blue eyes, light hair, few light hair on chin, very tliin moustache, slenderly built, knock- kneed, toes turning out, large ankle bones, ( inside) ; dressed in a shabby dark cloth jacket, grey cloth trousers, and elastic- side boots, much worn. Information to Inspector Hughes, Police Station, Menai Bridge, Anglesey.— Bow- street, Feb. 27. Stolen about 10 p. m. 20th instant, from Commercial- street, Spitalfieldsa bay Horse, aged, 14 hands high, one fore fetlock white, off knee much swollen, in very poor condition ; also a set. of old plain brass- mounted Harness. Information to the Director, C. T. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 25. Stolen on 11th instant, from Papworth St. Agnes, Huntingdon :— 2 Ponies, the property of Mr. Josiah Bull, farmer, one a light grey, 5 years old, 12} hands high; the other a chesnut. 6 years old, 12} hands high, both strongly made, unbroken, long tails, have never been shod. Informa- tion to the Police Station, St. Neot's, Hunts .^- Bow- street, February 23. Further description of JOHN SMITH, alias GREEN, advertised in Police Gazette of 16th instant, charged with stealing a bay Mare, on 13th instant, at Everton, Notts, the property of Mr. Samuel Cliffe, farmer :— the Mare has been recovered at Holbeach, having been sold at Spalding, on 18th instant. By a man named FRANK OWEN, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers, turning grey, long features, large front teeth, very round shoulders, turns his feet out when walking, and large scar on back of left hand ; was dressed in a blue coat, black vest, cord trousers, strong laced boots, with hooks at top, cloth cap, and red neckerchief. Information to Mr. Superin tendent Sanford, Retford, Nottinghamshire. — Bow - street, February 23. supposed written by her or a confederate; likely to be found « t hotels in the provinces. Information to the Director, C. I D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolis Police, Maruli 1. Charged with stealing a Half Sovereign, two Shillings in Silver, a small black Shawl, and a calico Bodice, on 20th ultimo .; also a woman's Press ^( recovered), and an old gold Ring, much worn, on 23rd ultimo, at Eastbourne, Sussex, all of which she obtained possession of under tile pretence of telling fortunes : - a woman, about 45 years of age, very tall, dark complexion, thin face, grey eyes, dark brown hair, slight figure ; had the appearance of a gipsey ; dressed in old black straw bat, trimmed with black, old paisley or red aud black pjaid, shawl with holes ii} it,, old brown or faded green: dross, with flonnce, very slKi.- t, White apron, and heavy boots. Carried a small wicker basket, with two handles and oilcloth cover, containing nightcaps and lace which she offers for sale, " LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of WILLIAM CHARLES FELTHAM. late clerk to Henry Pointing, brewer, Weston, near Bath, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— about 20 years of age, 6 feet 1 or. 2 inches high, long neck, narrow shoulders, slightly built, very little if any whiskers, and large Roman nose ; generally wears a suit of grey tweed. Information to Mr. Superintendent Morgan, County Police Station, Weston, near Bath, who holds the warrant.— Boxo- street, March 1. Stolen on 18th ultimo : a sealskin Jacket, trimmed deep fur, to match; black cashmere Dress, kilting and tucks ; black lace Shawl, yard square ; a gold Geneva Watch, enamel back, set with one large and thirty- six small diamonds, fringed as pendants, jewelled eight holes with rubies, maker's name on back ; a double link pattern gold Necklet; pair of gold filigree Ear- rings, long drops; three Rings, one broad gold buckle, pattern, large diamond in centre, one cluster, eight large diamonds, gold leaf each side, one broad gold Gipsey, set with three large diamonds; a large mosaic Brooch, set in gold, black edge, view of St. Paul's Church, at Rome ; a black enamelled Snuff- box, 3 inches long, inches wide, lined gold, ornamented gold leaves, and forget- me- nots on outside. By a woman, 55 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, broad nose, large mouth, ( shews her teeth, which are large and discoloured), wears spectacles ; dressed in black cashmere, trimmed velvet and fringe, black lace shawl or sealskin jacket, black straw bonnet, trimmed black feathers, and light pink roses ; speaks with a foreign accent.
