Tht Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, at accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It ii requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Sljfuatarc of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in referenoe to the POLICE GAZETTE may be maae and addressed • 4o tlx Editor, Police Ceurt, Bow Street, London, W. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- 1 tended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that < an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, • f the Offonoe charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. At no charge is made for the insertion of any artiole in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor MUST be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and tjf Abesentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded an Wte Offioe Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for Insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. REWARD BILLS. Handbills or other advertisements offering rewards ' for the discovery of stolen property, or the detection of • crime, forwarded for insertion in the Police Gazette, or for distribution by the Metropolitan Police, must state • clearly:— (( 1). The amount of the reward. ( 2). The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. The following form is suggested. " A reward of £ will be paid by of to any person who gives information leading to the apprehension ( or conviction) of the offender or offenders ( and the recovery of the property, or in ipreportion to the amount recovered), or leading to the . discovery of the missing person. ( Signed), high, brown hair, thin face, large red nose, fresh complexion, brown whiskers inclined to be 8andy, and of medium build ; dressed in a dark tweed suit, brown cloth overcoat, and black felt hat with square top ; he had the appearance of a farmer, and spoke with a squeaking voice, which may be assumed ; looks as if he is addicted to drink. On 28th ultimo a man called at the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank at Cheadle, and said that he had an account at their Leek Bank, and asked for a shilling cheque book. As he was not known to them as a customer, he wa3 refused. He said he had twc accounts to pay in the town, and was handed two blank cheques with two recept stamps, and the Clerk wrote on theno ' At Leek': he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, full face, fresh complexiou, slight brown whiskers, anc stout build ; dressed in a dark grey suit and black felt hat had the appearance of a respectable farmer. The abovi cheque is one of those obtained from the Cheadle Bank, ant purports to be drawn by Ralph C. Hall, in favour of Willian Bott, and is indorsed William Bott. It is strongly suspecte< that these men are working in concert together. Their modi of fraud is as follows :— One of them orders a coat or som other article at a clothier's shop, and gives an address in th neighbourhood ; he then tenders the false cheque in paymeni and reseives the change; and to put the shopkeeper off hi guard, gets measured for a suit of clothes, and leaves hi overcoat to be repaired, stating he will call in a few days fo the clothes. Chief Officers of Police are requested to caus immediate information to be given at banks, clothier's shop; and puhlic- houses. William Bott has been apprehended, an I is remanded to 24th instant. Information to Head Constable Blyth, Newcastle- under- Lyme, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, February 20. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Wanted for highway robbery at Lower Pinn, near Wolverhampton, at 8 45 p . o., 15th instant :— a man, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, Fallow complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, beard about a fortnights growth, black moustache, and of light build ; dressed in corduroy trousers, patched at knees, and greasy down front, dark short jacket, hard black hat, and strong lace up boots. He was seen in a public- house in the neighbourhood, about 2 p. m. on same day, and had with him a woman, and a brown dog with a white face,| said he was a rivet maker, and had worked at Brierley Hill, and West Bromwich. He went in the direction of Wolverhampton. Information to Inspector Gilbride, Tettenhall, near Wolverhampton, or to Sergeant Hammond, Police Station, Trysull, near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, February 20. sides, seam up front, patent toeeaps, punched holes, and half white chain, and tops of legs faced with blue ribbon ; 12 pairs women's Soles, stamped with size, and ' B' under- neath; 11 pairs " women's Soles, stamped with size, and ' C' underneath ; 8 pairs girl's 11 — I sizes, soles and insoles ; 10 pairs girl's 7 — 10 sizes, soles and insoles ; also some other bottom stuff Insoles, and middle Soles, not stamped, but all can be identified. Information to Mr. Superintendent Crisp, Police Office, Stone, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 25. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Bingmer, between 2 and 3 p. m.,' 17th inst.:—£ 4 10s. in Gold, 10s. in Silver, and some Bronze Money; a gold Ring with stone in it; a silver Albert Chain, with nine ( id.- pieces and a Shilling attached ; six Razors, four in a case, four black and two white handles ; a Pruning Knife, light bone handle ; a Lather Brush, white handle ; a 2- foot Rule ; two Neckties; a pair of new black cloth Trousers, fly fronts ; and| i silver Geneva Watch. By a youth, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, dark com- plexion, medium figure, a tramp ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, and cheesecutter ( jap ; and another about 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, medium figure, a tramp ; dressed in light jacket, light cord or fustian trousers and vest, hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Osbon, Lewes, East Sussex.— Bow- street, February. 25. Stolen from Shobrooke House, Devon, on 18th instant, by means of burglary :— two large Candlesticks; two tea Spoons; a wine Strainer ; a Seal and Chain j four Salt- cellars ; a Mustard- pot and cover; four Decanter- stands; a pair of Sugar- tongs ; bottle Corks and Labels ; a small Teapot; four salt Spoons ; a Pepper- pot and cover ; a Cover to sugar basin; mustard and pepper Spoons ; a small tooth powder Box. All the articles are silver, and have crest an Eagle, not spread, with arrow in her claw, and some have a Griffin's Head, in . addition ; supposed by a man and woman. £ 20 reward will be paid on recovery of the property, and conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter.— Bow- street, February" 23. To prevent subsequent misunderstand Director of Criminal Investigations calls the attention of Police and Constabulary Forces to the above.— Bow- street, February 2, 1880. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of JOHN HEN. WOOD, alias GREAVES, who has absconded from Whiston, charged with the murder of John Coe, at Rotherham, on the night of the 18th or morning of the 19th instant:— he is 20 years of age, 5 feet I 6£ inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, light hair, grey eyes ( cut over left), when last seen he wore a small light moustache and a little hair on bottom lip ; dressed in a dirty grey suit and small hard billycock hat; is a labourer, and sometimes works in quarries. On the night of the murder the deceased had a silver Geneva Watch, with consular cases jmd enamelled dial, No. 41907, maker J. G. Needham, Rother- ham, had attached a medium sized steel curb Chain, with | plated oval swivel, and Seal ( imitation bloodstone). When the body was found, this watch was missing; a few hours afterwards a similar one was seen in the possession of Wood. It is requested that every search be made in stackyards, outhouses. & c.. as Wood is in the habit of sleeping out. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On the night of 19th instant, the house of J. S. Willett, Esq., at Monkleigh, Devon, was entered and stolen therein : — about .£ 75 in Gold and Silver, and £ 50 in Bank of England Notes, No?, from 55348 to 55357, dated ' 77 | 9, London, 24th June, 1879' Information to Mr. Superintendent Ronsham, Devon Constabulary, Great Torrington.— Bow- street, Feb. 25. Stolen by means of burglary, at Colgate, Horsham, during the night of 22nd instant:— a youth's witney blue Overcoat; ; a brown mixture tweed Jacket, pockets behind, and Vest; . a pair of fawn coloured leather driving Gloves ; a new pair of women's No. 5 lace- up Boots; 2 large pocket Knives, one has got the name ' Turpin' on the blade. Supposed by a tramp- ing man, recently liberated from prison, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, 3andy hair, short stubby whiskers and moustache, about a fortnights growth ; dressed in dark clothes and cap, had the appearance of a low London stable- man. Information to Mr. Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, February 25. Suspected of having burglariously entered the dwelling of John Cash, at Grasby, on the night of 17th instant, and stealing two Loaves of Bread, a piece of Bacon :— a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, hair, and whiskers, which are very thin on chin and round mouth, little or none on sides of face, and moustache ; dressed in dark monkey jacket, blue Guernsey under the jacket, and supposed a white slop also, fustian trousers, worsted cap with peak, and speckled border round the cap, 1 and boots with heel plates, four headed nails in front part of ; heel, square headed nails round sole with round one in centre. : Information to Mr. Superintendent Danby, Brigg, Lincoln- , shire.— Bow- street, February 25. j Stolen on the morning of 22nd instant, at Stone :— , 2 pairs Tops, glove kid legj, elastic sides, seam up front, patent peak toecap, with small black buttons down side of , front seam, black strap up behind, and green ribbon at top of On the 17th instant, a cottage at Cradley, Herefordshire' was broken into and stolen therein :— a silver Watcli Guard' small twisted links ; a German silver ditto; a wood tobacco Pipe, amber mouthpiece ; a pair of Spectacles, steel frame, small size; a red and yellow figured Mutller, and some paste Cakes. Information to Mr. Superintendent Ovens, Police Station, Bromyard, cr £ to Police Sergeant Smith, Cradley, near Malvern, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, February 23. During the night of 18th instant, Mr. Samuel R. Deavilles office, situate iu Russell- street, Burton- on- Trent, was broken into, and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : — a blue cloth Overcoat, velvet collar, hip pockets, with flaps, double- breasted, bound round each cuff with black braid ; also a Box, containing some small Compasses, such as are used by architects for drawing plans. Information to Mr. Superintendent Harston, Burton- on- Trent.— Bow- st., Feb. 23. Description of two men in custody, charged with house- breaking, at Clewer .-— HENRY LAWSON, 31 years of age, 5 feet 4{ inches high, callow complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, slight whiskers aud moustache, medium build ; dressed in black ribbed coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, hard round hat, and side- spring boots. JOHN HARDS, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6£ incites high, fair complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair, slight whiskers, no moustache, thin figure; dressed in black ribbed coat, tweed vest, black cloth trousers, black hard hat, and button boots ; they are jobbiDg butchers. Information to Mr. Superintendent Blake, Berks Constabulary, Clewer.— Bo> w- street, February 23. Information to Mr. Superintendent Gillett, Court House, Rotherham, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 25. FORGERY. Description of a man charged with uttering two forged £ b Bank of England Notes in this borough, on th e evening | of 20th instant:— he signs the name of ' J. Moss,' is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, heavy moustache, and marks on his ears as if they have been frost bitten; dressed in dark clothes and long brown tweed waterproof overcoat, hard black bowler hat, and is supposed to have a black cloth overcoat in his possession, and has the appearance of a clerk. His mode of passing the Note is to enter a shop, make a small purchase, such as a pair of gloves, collar, or any other small article, obtains the change, and decamps. Information to Head Constable Walter, Heming- way, Cardiff.— Bow- street, February 23. Description of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM BOTT, wanted on a warrant charged with obtaining, on 6th instant, £ 21 3s., a brown Chesterfield Overcoat, 4s. 6d., aud a brown twill silk Ubrella, by uttering a false cheque for £ 23 on the Manchester and Liverpool District Banking Com- pany at Leek : he is about 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches Stolen at Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire, on 14th instant, by means of housebreaking :— an alluminium gold Watch, open face, black dial, white figures, second hands, No. 41603'; and about 16s. in Money, and amongst which were two old Pennies. Information to Mr. Superintendent Walker, Atherstone, or to Inspector Hannah, Nuneaton, Warwickshire. — Bow- street, February 20. During the night of 17th instant, the dwelling- house of William Marshall, farmer, Hednesford, was broken and entered and stolen therein -.— three muzzle loading Gun's, viz. one single barrelled Gun, medium size, one single barrelled do., with long barrel, and very small bore, one screw lost out of square, on which the cock fits on, and a double barrelled do., in good condition, and has screw broken of ramrod, all have dark polished stocks. Informaion to Mr. Superintendent Hackney, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Sergeant Brooks, Hednesford, near Stafford.— Bow- street, February/ 20. legs : 11 pairs Tops, calf kid, elastic sides, blocked fronts to toe with imitation fancy peak toecaps, corded and worked with black silk, top of legs faced with green ribbon, black strap up behind ; 11 pairs Tops, calf kid elastic sides, seams to toe, top of legs faced with blue leather, plain tops in other respects; 4 pairs girl's Tops, 11 — 1 sizes, calf kid elastic sides, seam up front, patent toecaps, with strap across, and top of legs faced with blue ribbon ; 4 pairs girl's Tops, 11 — 1 sizes, calf kid elastic sides, seam up front, patent toecaps, punched holes, aud half white chain, and top of legs faced with blue ribbon; 10 pairs Tops, 7 — 10 sizes, calf kid elastic HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen about 10 p. m. 20th instant, from Commercial street, Spitalfields :— a bay Horse, aged, 14 hands high, one fore fetlock white, off knee much swollen, iu very poor condition ; also a set of old plain brass mounted Harness. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 25. Stolet from a stable in Stockport, on 20th instant:— a dark brown heavy Horse, about 10 years old, 16 hands high, 2 white hind fetlocks, Btar on forehead, mark on back by friction of saddle. A reward of £ 5 will be given for the apprehension and conviction of the thief and recovery of the horse. Information to Chief Constable Staples, Stockport. — Bow- stnet February 23. Stolen on 11th instant, from Papworth St. Agnes, Huntingdon ;— 2 Ponies, the property of Mr. Josiah Bull 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. Februa'ry 27 farmer, one a light grey, 5 years old, 121 hands high ; the other a chesnut, 6 years old, 121 hands high, both strongly made, unbroken, long tails, have never been shod. Informa- tion to the Police Station, St. Neot's, Hunts.— Bow- street February 23. Further description of JOHN SMITH, alias GREEN, advertised in Police Gazette of 16th instant, charged with stealing a bay Mare, on 13th instant, at Everton, Notts, the property of Mr. Samuel Cliffs, farmer :— the Mare has been recovered at Holbeach, having been sold at Spalding, on 18th instant. By a man named FRANK OWEN, about 55 y- ars of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair and • whiskers, turning grey, long features, large front teeth, very- round shoulders, turns his feet out when - walking, and large scar on back of left hand ; was dressed in a blue coat, black vest, cord trousers, strong laced boots, with hooks at top, cloth cap, and red neckerchief. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Sanford, Retford, Nottinghamshire. — Bow - street, February 23. Slaughtered in a field at Grove- lane, Handsworth, near Birmingham, between 11 a. m. 15th, and 9 a. m. 17th instant, the property of Mr. George Baker :— a Sheep, Body stolen, skin and entrails left. Information to Mr. Superintendent Whitehurst, Westbromwich, or to Inspector Evans, Hands- worth, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, February 20. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded, charged with embezzlement :— W. A. CON- STANTINE, 36 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slim build, sallow complexion, black curly hair, whiskers, and moustache; dressed in dark clothes, high black hat; a commercial traveller, known in Birmingham and Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 25. RICHARD WALTERS, charged with stealing £ 330 from Mr. W. Whiteley, of Westbourne Grove, London, has been arrested.— Bow- street, Feb. 25. Charged with stea'ing two Vests, ( recovered), at Boston, on SOth instant, from a public- house where he lodged twj nights:— a man about 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, long features, hair, whiskers, and moustache nearly grey, and cut short, thick bottom lip, and lisps Blightly when talking; dressed in dark mixture coat and vest, dirty black and white small check trousers, black ones underneath, and hard black felt hat; he stated he was a native of Nottingham, and a joiner, and was looking for work, also that he had been in the Army 18 years ; he carried a flag basket with him. Information to Head Constable Bellamy, Boston, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 25. Charged with larceny as bailee of an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, maker W. E. Blowers, Becclcs, No. 3591 : a man, about 38 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight build, sallow complexion, light hair and moustache ; dressed in soft black billycock hat, cloth mixture jacket, trousers, and vest, and very shabby elastic- side boots. He is a tramping watch and clock cleaner, and carried his few tools in a nearly new washleather bag, which he puts into his jacket pocket. He left Ramsey on the forenoon of 13th instant. Information to Inspector Allen, Ramsey, Huntingdonshire.— Bow- street, February 25. Stolen on 21st instant, from a dwelling- house at Hag- lingden ::—£ 2 in copper Money ; a black worsted cloth Jacket; a black crape Bonnet; a black and white plaid Shawl; a pair of elastic- side Boots ; a gold Ring, with four blue stones set in the back, and a white stone in the centre, and a little hair twisted round one part, value of the whole £ 5. By a woman of the following description, 19 years of age, 5 feet high, fresh complexion, round face, black hair ; dressed in the stolen clothing. She is well known to the police at Burnley, Black- burn, Preston, Salford, and Stockport. Information t? Mr. Superintendent Henderson, County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 23. Absconded on 17th instant, from Birch Cross, Uttoxeter, charged with steading £ 11, the money of Jane Hodgkinson :— a joiner, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stoutish build, dark brown hair, large whiskers and moustache, turns his toes in when walking; dressed in a black suit of clothes, short brown overcoat, and hard black felt hat, all shabby. Information to Mr. Superintendent Williams, Leek, or to Sergeant Evans, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 23. Description of WYMAN RODGERS, charged on war- rant with stealing a silver Watch ( recovered), and a gold wedding Ring, at Breretoh, Rugeley, on 13th instant:— 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion and hair, has a little dark hair at corner of upper lip, dark eyes, slender build, well educated, and a native of Derby. A few years ago he was put into an orphanage in London, where he has been living until recently ; dressed in dark grey jacket and trousers, elastic- side boots, and wore a scholar's square ' mor- tar board' cap. He has relations living at Melbourne and Aston, near Derby, also at Burton- on- Trent and Rocester, Staffordshire, and also at Ashby- de- la- Zouch. He will most likely call on clergymen and schoolmasters for assistance. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Inspector Barrett, Town Hall, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., February 23. Description of a woman charged with stealing a Shawl, a Coat and Vest, and a female's white silk Necktie, flowered at ends, and has a fringe ( all recovered except necktie), from her lodgings on 19th instant:— about 24 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, slender make, black hair, and yellowish com- plexion ; dressed in a brown dress, long black cloth jacket., with frill of silk round bottom, hard black felt hat with pink and white feather, and white scarf round her neck. She is accompanied by a man— about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, proportionate build, cast in right eye, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, and shaves top part of face ; dressed in dark cloth trousers, light grey coat and overcoat, and hard black small brimmed felt hat, He stated lie was a coach builder, and was looking for work. They have a small black leather satchel andS a] canvas bag with them, the latter con- taining wearing apparel. Information to Head Constable Bellamy, Boston, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 23. Absconded from Ludbujy, on 20th instant, charged witli stealing a quantity of leather Boots, partly recovered, the property of his employer Mr. Robert Mattingly :— CHARLES STONE, a boot clicker, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light hair and moustache, recently cut; dressed in dark clothes, aud low crowned black felt hat; has been in business on his own account, at Northampton, where his wife is now residing, at No. 26, Freehold - street, Information to Mr. Superintendent Sach, Ludbury, Suffolk, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 23. Stolen at Seamer, near Scarborough, on the night of 16th, or the morning of 17th instanta black oilskin Overcoat, double- breasted, five black bone buttons down each aide ; a pair of fustian Leggings, much worn ; and a waggoner's Whip, with six brass hoops on stock. By a tramping labourer, about 40 ysm of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, slight whiskers; .' ressed in old dark coat and vest, fustian trousers, old dark cloth cap, with peak, old strong lace- up boots, cut down fronts nearly to the toe. Information to Mr. Superintendant Spence, North Riding Constabulary Office, Pickering, or to Inspector Dove, County Police Office, Palsgrave, Scarborough, Yorkshire — Bow- street, February 20. Bescrijition of two men wanted for stealing £ 5 in Gold, at Old Trafford, on the evening of 15th instant:— lst, 28 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, no whiskers or' moustache ; dressed in dark shooting coat and billycock hat; 2nd, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark moustache ; dressed in light coat, and billycock hat. Stolen, at Gorton, between 11 p. m. on 13th, and 6.30 p m. on 14th instant 10 Pigeons, common breed, and of various colours, by two men— lst, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 ins. high, stout build, light hair aud moustache ; dressed in light coat and billycock hat;— 2ud about 26 years of age, 5 ft. 9 ins. high, stout build, dark hair, and moustache ; dressed in long dark coat and billycock hat. Four of the Pigeons have been recovered. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- st., Feb. 20. Although Si reward is offered for the apprehension of Deserters at the time, £ 2 only is payable at the expiration of 3 months, and £ 1 only at the expiration of 8 months from the date of dmrtion, and after the expiration of a complete year, no reward will be paid, except under special circumstances.
