CONTAINING The substance of oD Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and « Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horse* for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. O. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably neoessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offenoe charged, and an attested oopy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Al no charge is made for the insertion of any artiele in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor KMIMt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Offioe Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. REWARD BILLS. Handbills or other advertisements offering rewards for the discovery of stolen property, or the detection of Crime, forwarded for insertion in the Police Gazette, or for distribution by the Metropolitan Police, must state clearly:— ( 1). The amount of the reward. ( 2). The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain 110 expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. The following form is suggested. " A reward of £ will be paid by of to any person who gives information leading to the apprehension ( or conviction) of the offender or offenders ( and the recovery of the pioperty, or in proportion to the amount recovered), or leadin discovery of the missing person. To prevent subsequent misunderstanding, the Director of Criminal Investigations calls Ihe attention of Police and Constabulary Forces to the above.- Bow- street, February 2, 1880. to the INFORMATIONS. 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, beard about a fortnights growth, black moustache, and of light build ; dressed in corduroy trousers, patched at knees, and greasy down front, dark short jacket, hard black hat, and strong lace up boots. He was seen in a public- house in the neighbourhood, about 2 p. m. on same day, and had with him a woman, and a. brown dog with white face,| said he was a rivet maker, and had worked at Brierley Hill, and West Bromwich. He went in the direction of Wolverhampton. Information to Inspector Gilbride, Tettenhall, near Wolverhampton, or to Sergeant Hammond, Police Station, Trysull, near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, February 20. Stolen from the person on 12th instant, during the par- liamentary election : a silver Watch, maker ' Mallett, Barn- staple,' aud a plain gold Chain attached; a silver Watch, f- plate, No. 1801, a twisted pattern g » ld Chain attached; and a Purse, containing £ 28 Gold. Two men are suspected ; one about 25 yeais of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, paie com- plexion, and small dark moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, and round pole hat, with deep band ; the other is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, inclined to be stout, and a iittle pockmarked ; dressed in dark grey clothes and Stanley cap. Information to Head Constable Longhurst, Barnstaple, Devonshire.— Bow- street, February 16. Stolen from the person, between Bentley and Walsall, about 7* 30 p. m. on 12th instant, by three men who cannot be described : a wash- leather Bag, containing £ 47 12s. 6d. in Gold and Silver. A bunch of Keys on a steel split Ring, a small metal Label was also attached, on one of which is engraved ' Alfred N. Timpson, Vine- terrace, Wolverhampton,' on the other ' Anyone returning these keys will be suitably rewarded.' A pocket Knife, white handle, 3 blades, two small, one large, small metal plate on handle. A silver Geneva Watch, white dial, second hand, chased back, No. 3112. Information to Chief Superintendent Longden, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., Feb. 16. FORGERY. Description of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM BOTT, wanted on a warrant charged with obtaining, on 5ch iu& taut, £ 21 3s., a browu Chesterfield Overcoat, 4s. 6d, and a brown twill silk Ubrella, by uttering a false cheque for £ 23 on the Manchester and Liverpool District Banking Com- pany at Leek : he is about 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches nigh, brown hair, thin face, large red nose, fresh complexion, brown whiskers inclined to be sandy, and of medium build dressed in a dark tweed suit, brown cloth overcoat, and black felt hat with square top ; he had the appearance of a farmer, itnd spoke with a squeaking voice, which may be assumed looks as if he is addicted to drink. On 28th ultimo a man called at the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank at Cheadle, and said that he had an account at their Leek Bank, and asked for a shilling cheque book. As he was not known to them as a customer, he waa refused. He said he had two accounts to pay in the town, and was handed two blank cheques with two recept stamps, and the Clerk wrote on teem ' At Leek': he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, full face, fresh complexiou, slight brown whiskers, and stout build ; dressed in a dark grey suit and black felt hat; had the appearance of a respectable farmer. The above cheque is one of those obtained from the Cheadle Bank, and purports to be drawn by Ralph C. Hall, in favour of William Bott, and is indorsed William Bott. It is strongly suspected that these men are working in concert together. Their mode of fraud is as follows :— One of them orders a coat or some » , ther article at a clothier's shop, and gives an address in the neighbourhood ; he then tenders the false cheque in payment, and reseives the etiange ; anc to put the shopkeeper oif Ms guard, gets measured for a suit of clothes, and leaves his overcoat to be repaired, stating he will call in a few days for the clothes. Chief Officers of Police are requested to cause immediate information to be given at banks, clothier's shops, And puhlic- houses. William Bott has been apprehended, aud is remanded to 24th instant. Information to Head Constable Blyth, Newcastle- under- Lyme, who holds the warrant.— Bow- strset, February 2 ). BOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Wanted for highway robbery at Lower Pinn, near Wolverhampton, at 8' 45 p. m., 15th instant:— a man, about ^ BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen at Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire, on 14th instant, by means of housebreaking :— an alluminium gold Watch, open face, black dial, white figures, second hands, No. 41603 ; aud about 16s. in Money, and amongst which were two old Pennies. Information to Mr. Superintendent Walker, Atherstone, or to Inspector Hannah, Nuneaton, Warwickshire. — Bow- street, February 20. During the night of 17th instant, the dwelling- house of William Marshall, farmer, Hednesford, was broken and entered aud stolen therein :— three muzzle loading Gun's, viz. one single barrelled Gun, medium size, one single barrelled do., with long barrel, and very small bore, one screw lost out of square, on which the cock fits on, and a double barrelled do., in good condition, and has screw broken of ramrod, all have dark polished stocks. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hackney, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Sergeant Brooks, Hednesford, near Stafford.— Bow- street, February 20. Stolen by mears of housebreaking, between 2 and 3 p. m. on 17th instant:—-£ 4 10s. in Gold, 10s. in Silver, aud some Bronze Money; a gold Ring with stone in it ; a silver Albert Chain, with nine Od.- pieees and a Shilling attached ; six Razors, four in a case, four black and two white handles ; a Pruning Knife, light bone handle ; a Lather Brush, white handle ; a 2- foot Rule ; two Neckties; aud a pair of new black cloth Trousers, fly fronts. By a youth, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, dark complexion, medium figure, a tramp ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, and cheese- cutter cap ; and another about 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, medium figure, a tramp ; dressed in light jacket, light cord or fustian trousers and vest, hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Osbon, Lewes, East Sussex.— Bow- street, February 20. Between 7 and 7.30 p. m. on 14th instant, thieves, by placing a ladder outside, effected an entry in a bed- room at Loose Court, Loose, Kent, securing the room- door inside by a wedge and gimlet, and then stealing a gold liorse- shoe scarf Pin, a gold mourning Ditto with round black stone, having a white bar across it, and a gold Ring with red stone on a raised centre. Supposed by three persons : 1st. a man 30 years of age, middle height, dark whiskers at side?, small moustache, shaved chin, dark hair, pale face, and slightly built; dressed in a lightish mixture plaid suit, with white spots and soft black billycock hat. 2nd, a man 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light hair, scarcely any beard, aud pale face; dressed in mixture suit with gold- coloured spots, and hard black billycock bat. 3rd, a boy* 14 years of age, aud pale face. Information to Mr. Superintendent Ovenden, Kent County Constabulary, Maidstone.— Bow- street, February 18. Suspected of breaking into Mr. Sample's pawnshop, on 10th instant : a man about 30 years of age, 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins. high, and black whiskersj; dressed in a dark coat and vest, grey coloured or grey trousers, and hard round billycock hat. Aud a 2ud mau about 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet high, long sandy whiskers, thin on face, large nose, aud rather flat, round face; dressed in pepper- and- salt coloured coat, grey or dirty moleskin trousers, and round Stolen on 7th instant by means of housebreaking, at Staverton : a black cloth Jacket; a dark tweed Jacket; a light check Jacket; a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a pair of dark drab Trousers ; 2 white calico Shirts, nearly new ; 2 silk Handkerchiefs, one grey, blue and white, one chocolate colour ; a red cotton Handkerchief, with blue and white spots, and 8s. 6d. in Money, Supposed by 2 tramps, one about 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light moustache ; dressed in jacket, with white slop underneath, dark trousers, and cap. The other about 24 years of age. 5 fe » t 4 or 5 inches high, dark moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, and black billycock hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, February 16. On the night of 6th instant, the premises of Messrs. J. & W. Cresswell, of Pelsall, were broken and eatertd, aud stolen therefrom: a leg of Mutton, bed of Beef, about £ 1 worth of copper Money, 7s. 6d, iu Silver, a number of Id. Postage Stamps, a Bag marked ' T. 149,' and other Articles. ( See Police Gazette of 9th instant.) Whoever will give such Information ( to Messrs. Cresswell, or P. C. Newman, Police Station Pelsall,) as shall lead to the apprehension and con- viction of the thief or thieves, shall receive £ 5 reward from Messrs. Cresswell. - Bow- street, February 16. Slaughtered in a field at Grove- lane, Handsworth, near Birmingham, between 11 a. m. 15th, aud 9 a. m. 17th instant, the property of Mr. George Baker :— a Sheep, Body stolen, skin and entrails left. Information t, o Mr, Superintendent Whitehurst, Westbromwich, Or to Inspector Evans, Hands- worth, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, February 20. Stolen on the night, of 13th instant, at New House, Farm, St. Ethan's, near Cardiff : a chesnut colour cob Horse, 4 years old, about 14- hands 1 inch. high, white streak down face, add short tail. He was bought at Brecon Fair in September last, from a man residing near Trecastle. Information to' Mr. Superintendent Matthews, Pontypridd, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, February 16. Found at Willenhall, on 12th instant : a bay coloured Pony, aged, about 9 or 10 hands high, long mane and tail, white star oil forehead, in good condition, shod on both hind feet, fore feet not shod. Information to Chief Superintendent Longden, Bilston,. Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 16. Stolon at Everton, between 12 midnight, 12th, and 4 a. m., on 13th instant: a bay half- bred Mare, 6 years old, 14£ hands high, four black lega, star on forehead, scar on olf hind heel, caused by the halter, the property of Mr. Samuel Cliffe, farmer, Everton. By a man named JOHN SMITH, alias GREEN, about 55 yars of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair and whiskers, turning grey, long features, large front teeth, a hump on back, turns his feet out when walking, and large scar on back of one hand. Has been traced to Newark, from thence on to the Sleaford or Grantham- road. Information to Mr. Superintendent Sanford, Retford, Nottinghamshire— Bow- street, February 16. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen at Seamer, near Scarborough, on the night of 10th, or the morning of 17th instant:— a black oilskin Overcoat, double- breasted, five black bone buttons down each side; a pair of fustian Leggings, much worn ; and a waggoner's Whip, with six brass hoops on stock. By a tramping labourer, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, slight whiskers ; dressed in old dark coat and vest, fustian trousers, old dark cloth cap, with peak, old strong lace- up boots, cut down fronts nearly to the toe. Information to Mr. Superintendant Spence, North Riding Constabulary Office, Pickering, or to Inspector Dove, County Police Office, Falsgrave, Scarborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February £ 0. Description of two men wanted for"! stealing £ 5 in Gold, at Old Trafford,. on the evening of loth instant:— 1st, 28 to 35 years of age, 5. feet 6 or 7 inches high. no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in dark shootiDg coat and billycock hat; 2nd, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark moustache ; dressed in light coat, and billycock Stolen, at Gorton, between 11 p. m. on 13th, and 6.30 p. m. on 14th iustaut:— 10 Pigeons, common breed, and of various colours, by two men — l « t, about 23 years of age, 6 feet 5 ins. high, stout build, light hair and moustache ; dressed in light coat and billycock h at;— 2nd about 26 years of age, 5 ft. 9 ins. high, stout build, dark hair, and moustache ; dressed iu long dark coat and billycock hat. Four of the Pigeons have been recovered. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- st,, Feb. 20. Absconded from Worcester, charged on a warrant with embezzlement HENRY JAMES DAVIS, a medicine dispenser, about 43 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown curly hair, whiskers and moustache, thick built, rather round shoulders, and walks- very stiff, has a verv Short neck, fresh complexion; full faee, ana is a native of Liverpool; dressed in a grey Ulster overcoat, arid a hard hat, with flat top. Information to the City Polio-, Worcester.- Bow- street, February 20. Stolen at Cheadle, Hulme, Cheshire, between 10 a. m. and 1 p. m. on 6th instant:— a gold Pencil- case, marked ' J. I1. E.' ; £ 4 in Gold ; a black cloth Jacket, three buttons in front; a pair man's black cloth ' Trousers; a pair of lace- up Boots, brass eyelets, man's size, front of left boot burnt near instep. By FRED JOHNSON, a farm labourer, wearing the stolen clothes and boots, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hail', no whiskers, seal mark down right side of nose as if from a cut ; will most likely seek employment at some farm- house. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Constabulary Station, Stockport, Cheshire. — Bow- street, February 20. Absconded, and failed to surrender to his bail, on 13th instant, charged with stealing £ 300 from au hotel in Carlisle, on 16th December last: JAMES GRAY, alias JAMES WM. WILSON, a temperance hotel keeper, of Leicester- square, London, 31 years of age, 5 feet 9f inches high, round face, pimples on cheeks, swarthy complexion, black hair, inclined to curl, black whiskers, closely cropped, black mous- tache, shaved on chin, black or hazel eyes, ordinary build, of smart appearance, and may have shaved ; dressed in dark suit, black diagonal ribbed cloth overcoat, black felt hat, and lacing boots. Information to Chief Constable Mackay, City of Carlisle, who holds a warrant for hi3 apprehension. - Bow- street, February 18. Stolen at Toxtelh Park, between 2.30 p. m. and 4 p. m. on 13th inst. ; a lady's gold lever Watch, maker W. H. Thompson, Park- road, Liverpool, monogram ' M. A. D.' covering wjiole of back of outer case, gold dial, No. 1179 ; a lady's gold' Albert Chain, with small gold Locket attached, has two ornaments dividing chain into three pieces ; a lady's gold Ring, set with 4 rubies and 6 pearls, 18 carat ; a lady's sold Gipsy Ring, with small diamond, initials inside ' T.
