The above cheque is one of those obtained from the Cheadle Bank, and purports to be drawn by Ralph C. Hall, in favour of William Bott, and is indorsed William Bott. It is strongly suspected that these men are working in concert together. Their mode of fraud is as follows :— One of them orders a coat or some other article at a clothier's shop, and gives an address in the neighbourhood ; he then tenders the false cheque in payment, and reseives the change ; and to put the shopkeeper off his guard, gets measured for a suit of clothes, and leaves his overcoat to be repaired, stating he will call in a few days for the clothes. Chief Officers of Police are requested to cause immediate information to be given at banks, clothier's shops, and puhlic- houses. Information to Head Constable Blyth, Newcastle- under- Lyme, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, February 13. REWARD BILLS. Handbills or other advertisements offering rewards for the discovery of stolen property, or the detection of » ; time, forwarded for insertion in the Police Gazette, or for distribution by the Metropolitan Police, must state « 1 early:— ( 1). The amount of the reward. ( 2). The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should c ontain no expressions holding1 out any expectation of sward for the return of the property, without the » pprehension of the offender. The following form is suggested. ° A reward of £ will be paid by , f to any person who gives information leading to the apprehension ( or conviction) of the offender » r offenders ( and the recuvery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered), or leading to the iiscovery of the missing person. MURDER And MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Notice is hereby given, that, in addition to the sum of i' 100 offered by Her Majesty's Government, and « of a further sum of £ 100 by Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, the High Sheriff of the County Palatine of Lancashire ( William Garnett, Esq.), offers a reward of £ 100, making a total i-' ward offered of £ 300, to any person, other than a person belonging to a police force in the United Kingdom, who shall jive such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers of Sarah Jane Roberts, on 7th January last, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the pereon who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead, to a like result. The High Sheriff offers the above eward of £ 100 for a period of one month from the day of the date hereof. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. The dwelling- house of Mr. John Summer, farmer, Hart- hill, near Tattenhall, Cheshire, between 12 midnight 8th, and 5 a. m. on 9th instant, was burglariously entered, and stolen therefrom : a black great Coat, with velvet collar, lined with dark material, pocket inside left breast, two outside on hips ; a grey plaid Coat, black bone buttons, reefer shape ; a black and white plaid Coat, pocket inside left breast, two outside on hips, lined with light coloured material ; a black cloth Coat, pocket inside left breast, two outside on hips, lined, with black material, black cloth buttons; a black cloth Vest, lined with blue and white striped material ; a dark and light grey striped Coat, lined with drab material, pocket inside left breast, two outside on hips, dark bone buttons, 28s. in cash, a Ready Reckoner, with Mr. Sumner's name therein, in the inside breast pocket ; a girl's drab tweed Ulster, two collars round neck, and buttons to match ; a pair of men's lace- up kid Boots, with toecaps, brass eyelet- holes and hooks, toe of right boot wants mending; a pair of girl's lace- up Boots, brass eyelet holes, newly soled and heeled ; a pair of women's button Boots, fit very high up the leg ; a pair of black woollen Stockings; a white table Cover. Stolen from a pawnbroker's shop at York, during the night of 9th instant, ( by making a hole in the roof) : eight or nine Spade Guineas, marked ' cv/-/-'; three lady's gold Guards, of different patterns ; a gent's gold Albert; a lady's gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, No. 53059, scratched inside outer case ' 4 sv/ cr/ x' ( new) ; a lady's gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, No. 120861, scratched inside outer case ' 5 av/ ce/ x', ( new); a lady's gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, No. 120669. scratched inside outer case ' 6 av/ t/ x', ( new) ; and about ten new bright gold Lockets, oval shape, engraved on each side. Between 11 p. m. on 10th, and 7 a. m. on 12th instant, a house at Egremont, has burglariously entered, and stolen therein : a rough blue pilot cloth Overcoat, velvet collar, four dark horn buttons in front, two side pockets, one outside right aud one inside left breast, lined with dark merino ; a blue pilot cloth Overcoat, nearly new, two side pockets, lined with same material: four silver tea Spoons, marked ' R.'; tenor eleven electro- plated Spoons, marked ' R.' ; a pair of man's elastic- side sewn Boots, with toe- caps, nearly new ; a pair of man's buttoned cloth Boots ; a pair of man's sewn elastic- side Boots, with toe- caps, double soled, and very strong. Infor- mation to Mr. Chief Superintendent Egerton, County Con- stabulary, Birkenhead.— Bow- street, February 13. FORGERY. Description of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM BOTT, wanted on a warrant charged with obtaining, on 5th instant, £ 21 3s., a brown Chesterfield Overcoat, 4s. 6d., and a brown twill silk Ubrella, by uttering a false cheque for £%', on the Manchester and Liverpool District Banking Com- pany at Leek : he is about 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair, thin face, large red nose, fresh complexion, brown whiskers inclined to be sandy, and of medium build ; dressed in a dark tweed suit, brown cloth overcoat, and black felt hat with square top ; he had the appearance of a farmer, aud spoke with a squeaking voice, which may be assumed ; looks as if he is addicted to drink. On 28th ultimo a man called at the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank at Cheadle, and said that he had an account at their Leek Bank, and asked for a shilling cheque book. As he was not known to them as a customer, he was refused. He said he had two accounts to pay in the town, and was handed two blank • cheques with two recept stamps, and the Clerk wrote on them ' At Leek he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches Stolen on the night of 7th instant, from a jeweller's shop in Longton, by means of burglary : a lady's gold Watch, gold flowered dial, and black figures ; 2 silver lever Watches, gold dials, and figures; a silver Geneva lever Watch, dark coloured dial ; 6 silver verge Watches; 2 gold Guards— one a lady's, with plain twisted links, the other round links 5 silver Albert Guards, some plain and some twisted links several gold wedding and keeper Rings, all second hand! Information to Mr. Superintendent McWilliams, Police . Office. Longton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 13. The man THOMAS COPE, advertised in Police Gazette of 9th instant, as being in custody at Oswestry on several charges of burglary, has been identified as a man who was convicted at the Summer Assizes at Appleby, 1878, on charge of burglary, and was sentenced to 18 months imprison ment, he was discharged from Kendal Prison, 1st January, 1880 : he then gave his name as VALENTINE SCAMEL and described himself as a native of Amsterdam, he was also convicted at Leicester Assizes, 1862, for burglary, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, also convicted at Radnor Assizes, March, 1870, for burglary, and sentenced to 10 years penal servitude. Information to Mr. Superintendent Gough Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, February 13. Stolen by means of burglary, at Hastings, during the night of 8th instant : seven silver tea Spoons, engraved ' H, P. W.' or ' P. H. W.'; two silver table Spoons ; two salt Spoons ; a plated butter Knife, bone handle ; a new black cloth frock Coat; a blue cloth Chesterfield Overcoat, covered buttons, pockets on the hips, lined with Italian cloth ; two pairs of dark tweed Trousers; a Chesterfield dust Coat several light- coloured Vests; a pair of elastic- side Boots, cork soles; a pair of Oxford Shoes, nearly new ; and a pair of leather Slippers. Supposed by a tramp, about 24 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, cut short, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, slight figure; dressed in some of the stolen clothes, and left his old clothes and boots behind. Supposed in company with another man who is said to be a painter, and may be wearing some of the stolen property; frequents common lodging- houses); in the pocket of the coat left behind is an address ' Jolly Sailor,'' Little Mount Zion.' Information to the Chief Superintendent of Police, Hastings, Sussex. — Bow- street, February 11. . Between 11 p. m. on 6th, and 6 a. m. on 7th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Wm. Penketh, of Cornist Cannel, Flint, was entered by means of breaking a pane of glass in the back kitchen window, and stealing therefrom : a light coloured tweed Coat, angle pattern, a white cambric Pocket- handkerchief in one of the pockets ; a blue top Coat, black- covered buttons ; a black cloth Coat, with velvet collar ; an old woollen Shirt, been mended with new stuff; twelve pairs of men's, women's, and children's Stockings ; half a loaf of Bread; and a pair of man's Stockings, marked ' J. S.' In- formation to Deputy Chief Constable Adams, Mold, Flint- shire.— Bow- street, February 11. Between 12 mid- day and 1 p. m. 10th instant, a pawn- broker's shop at Middlesborough, was entered, and about £ 8 in Silver, and a few Shillings in Copper Money stolen therein; also a blue and white stripe cotton Bag, with string at top. Entrance had been effected by removing two iron rods from the back window, which window was opened with a large jemmy, ( left on the premises.) Suspected by two men : one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, black whiskers; dressed in a dark coat and vest, grey colottred trousers, and hard round billycock hat; the other • bout 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, or may be 6 feet, long sandy whiskers ; dressed in pepper- and- salt coloured coat, and grey or dirty moleskin trousers, and round hard billycock hat. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 11. The man, wanted for breaking into the watchmaker's shop at Llanidloes, on 4th instant, advertised in Police Gazette of 9th instant, has been apprehended, and the watches found : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown hair, blue eyes, sallow complexion, small dark whiskers, chin and upper lip shaved, has lost the first finger of right hand ; dressed in blue pilot cloth monkey jacket, dark mixture cloth waistcoat and trousers, strong lace- up boots, and cap. During the night of 6th instant, a dwelling- house at Totterdown, Bristol, was broken and entered and stolen : a > air of silver Sugar- tongs, marked, ' T. S. H.'; a dozen beaded Forks ; a pair of Nut- crackers ; a dozen fish Knives and Forks ; 6 dessert Knives, pearl handles ; a ditto Fork ; dozen Tea- spoons; an egg Spoon; a Sugar- spoon, all plated ; 2 pairs of high- legged woman's button Boots; a pair of man's patent leather dress Boots ; a pair of Goloshes ; a damask white Table- cloth ; and about 10 lb. of spiced Beef. Left in charge of the landlord, of a public- house, on 30th December last, by a horse- coper : a grey Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, short tail, in good condition, brae3 mounted harness, ' A. H.' in monogram on pad ; a light Gig. painted dark green, picked- out light, etiek back, leather dash and wings, supposed stolen. THOMAS ROBSON, described ' in Police Gazette of 6th instant, wanted at Brynmawr for embezzlement has been apprehended, and committed for trial at the ensuing Brecon- shire Quarter Sessions.— Bow- st., February 13. Stolen about 6.15 a. m. on 11th instant: 2 Sovereigns, a Half- Sovereign, and 2 Sixpences. By a lodger, 2o years of age, 5 ft. 3 or4. ins. high, dark complexion, black hair, cut short, black moustache, whiskers about a fortnight's growth, lame of right leg from a stroke when a boy, and which he drags behind him with the toe turned outwards, and js a factory operative ; dressed in black worsted coat and vest, cotton cord trousers, dark woollen cap with knob at the top, black and white plaid woollen scarf, and clogs. Information to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Ashton- under- Lyne,— Bow- street, February 13. Wanted, on a warrant, for larceny, as bailee, of £ 25 4s.: HENRY NICHOLSON, late a sergeant in the Sunderland Police Force, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10^- inches high, pale complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, slightly pockpitted, rather slender build, sharp features, slight whiskers, and moustache, is a native of Scorton, near Richmond ; dressed on 2nd instant, in a blue cloth reefing jacket, light trousers, Jand hard felt hat. £ 5 reward will be paid to any per.- on who will give such infor- mation as will lend to his apprehensian, on application to Chief Constable Nicholson, Sunderland.— Bow- street, Feb. 13. Stolen, on 5th instant, by two tramps : 6 silver Tea- spoons, a good deal worn, five of them are marked | E. T.', the other bears letters and marks that cannot be described. One man is about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, full sandy whiskers ; dressed in a grey coat, and a hard black felt hat. The other about 5 feet 5 inches high, about 30 years of age, and dark hair and whiskers; dressed in a black coat, and soft black felt hat. They were begging, and went on to Huntingdon, where they lodged at the True Blue public- house, leaving early next morning. Information at the Police Station, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire.-- Bow- street, Feb. 11. Description of JOHN SMITH, supposed a native of Rotherham, charged on warrant with stealing from Peter- borough Workhouse, on 31st ultimo, the property of the guardians, a! blue Coat and Waistcoat ; a pair of moleskin trousers ; 2 Shirts; 2 Neckerchiefs ; 2 pairs Stockings; 1 hard felt billycock Hat; 2 pairs of Boots ; 1 pair of Shoes, the articles are numbered ' 35 ': he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair aud moustache, was clean shaved, is a labourer ; was dressed in the stolen blue jacket aud vest. Information to Head Con- stable Hurst, Police Station, Peterborough, Northampton- shire.— Bow- street, February 11. % m Description of WILLIAM STOCKSLEY, a chimney sweep, charged with stealing a Chimney Sweeping Machine, and five lengths of cane with hoops and screws at the ends, the whalebone or cane in the machine head is not all of one length; also a hand Brush, Sheet, soot Bag, at Redcar, on the 29th ultimo : he is 19 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, and proportionate make ; dressed in a black cloth coat, dark vest; grey tweed trousers, cheesecutter cap, and strong lace- up boots ; is a native of West Hartlepool, and served his apprenticeship with John Boyd, chimney sweep, Suuderland. Information to - Mr. Superintendent Clarkson, North Riding Constabulary Office, Guisbrough, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his arrest. — Bow- street, February 11. Stolen between 7 and 8 a. m. on 9th instant: a suit of black Clothes, Coat double- breasted, Vest single- breasted; a white silk pocket Handkerchief; a white linen Do., with narrow black stripe round the edge were in the coat pocket, and two blackleaa Pencils in the trousers pocket; a pair of elastic- side- Boots, with patent leather up sides of elastic and up instep 4- inch wide, have been recently tapped ; a pair of light giey cotton Stockings ; a blue and, white plaid Shirt; and 7s, in Silver. Stolen, on 10th instant, from an unfinished building, on Beggars' Knap, Doncaster : a hand Saw, marked ' J Moor: on handle, and may also be marked ' G Cross.' ; a tenon Saw. 18 inches long. Jnearly new, with brass back, marked ' G. Cross on handle ; supposed by a tramp, about 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high ; dressed in light jacket and cap. Information to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Station, Guildhall, Doncaster, Dorset.— Bow- st. February 11 Description of a man, who pledged some property stolen from this district : about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, ruddy complexion, dark hair, turning grey, greyish whiskers, stout build ; has the appearance of a brick- layer or mason, and wore a hard billycock hat with broad brim. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford Manchester.— Bow- street, February 11. Description of FRED. MICKLAND, alias NICKLING wanted on warrant for felony at Hull on 31st ultimo : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, slight dark moustache, pale complexion, large nose, with red mirk on the bridge, and small whiskers; dressed in black worsted cord coat and vest, brown speckled trousers, low crowned black billycock hat, white muffler, and green kid gloves. Stated he belonged to the Inland Revenue Office, and that his father WAS Deputy Governor of Wakefield Gaol, Information to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bow- st'e « t, February 11. Abeconded- from Tunbridge Wells, on lst instant, charged on a warrant With stealing a Coat, a pair of Trousers, and other articles from a public house where he lodged 2 nights : a man named —— CARNELL, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, light sandy hair, few whiskers and moustache ; dressed iu long brown single- breasted overcoat, light irousers, fitting tight, black Oxford bat, which appears too small for him ; walks^ very upright.
