REWARD BILLS. Handbills or other advertisements offering rewards for the discovery of stolen property, or the detection of crime, forwarded for insertion in the Police Gazette, or for distribution by the Metropolitan Police, must state clearly:— S. The amount of the reward. . The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid, They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. The following form, is suggested. " A reward of £ will be paid by of to any person who gives information leading to the apprehension ( or conviction) of the offender or offenders ( and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered), or leading to the , discovery of the missing person. Spoons ; a plated butter Knife, bone handle ; a new black cloth frock Coat; a blue cloth Chesterfield Overcoat, covered buttons, pockets on the hips, lined with Italian cloth ; two pairs of dark tweed Trousers; a Chesterfield dust Coat; several light- coloured Yests; a pair of elastic- side Boots, cork sole3; a pair of Oxford Shoes, nearly new ; and a pair of leather Slippers. Supposed by a tramp, about 24 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, cut short, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, slight figure; dressed in some of the stolen clothes, and left his old clothes and boots behind. Supposed in company with another man who is said to be a painter, and may be wearing some of the stolen property; frequents common lodging- houses}; in the pocket of the coat left behind is an address ' Jolly Sailor,'' Little Mount Zion.' Information to, the Chief Superintendent of Police, . Hastings, Sussex. — Bow- street, February 11. Between 11 p. m. on 6th, and 6 a. m. on 7th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Wm. Penketh, of Cornist Cannel, Flint, was entered by means of breaking a pane of glass in the back kitchen window, and stealing therefrom : a light coloured tweed Coat, angle pattern, a white cambric Pocket- handkerchief in one of the pockets ; a blue top Coat, black covered buttons ; a black cloth Coat, with velvet collar ; an old woollen Shirt, been mended with new stuff; twelve pairs of men's, women's, and children's Stockings ; half a loaf of Bread ; and a pair of man's Stockings, marked ' J. S.' In- formation to Deputy Chief Constable Adams, Mold, Flint- shire.— Bow- street, February 11. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Notice is hereby given, that, in addition to the sum of £ 100 offered by Her Majesty's Government, and of a further sum of £ 100 by Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, the High Sheriff of the County Palatine of Lancashire ( William Garnett, Esq.), offers a reward of £ 100, making a total reward offered of £ 300, to any person, other than a person belonging to a police force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers of Sarah Jane Roberts, on 7th January last, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. The High Sheriff offers the above reward of £ 100 for a period of one month from the day of the date hereof. Information to the Chief Constable of Lancashire, County Police Office, Preston, or to Mr. Superin tendent Bent, Police Station, Old Trafford, near Manchester. — Bow- street, February 9. Between 12 mid- day and 1 p. m. 10th instant, a pawn- broker's shop at Middlesborough, was entered, and about £ 8 in Silver, and a few Shillings in Copper Money stolen therein ; also a blue and white stripe cotton Bag, with string at top. Entrance had been effected by removing two iron rods from the back window, which window was opened with a large jemmy, ( left on the premises.) Suspected by two men : one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches h igh, black whiskers; dressed in a dark coat and vest, grey coloured trousers, and hard round billycock hat; the other about 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, or may be 6 feet, long sandy whiskers ; dressed in pepper- and- salt coloured coat, and grey or dirty moleskin trousers, and round hard billycock hat. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 11. The girl MARY ANN JONES, described in Police Gazette of 9th instant, wanted for housebreaking at Moseley Hole, is committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions at Stafford.— Bow- street, February 11. The man, wanted for breaking into the watchmaker's shop at Llanidloes, on 4th instant, advertised in Police Gazette of 9th instant, has been apprehended, and the watches found : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high dark brown hair, blue eyes, sallow complexion, small dark whiskers, chin and upper lip shaved, has lost the first finger of right hand ; dressed in blue pilot cloth monkey jacket, dark mixture cloth waistcoat and trousers, strong lace- up boots, and cap. Information at Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to Sergeant Sibbald, Police Station, Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, February 11. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen' from the person, during the Conservative Demonstration, at Oxford, on 3rd instant: a silver Watch, white dial, steel hands, large figures, open face, with flint glass. No. 47828 ; and a single case silver lever Watch, maker • Johnson, London',' E. H.' on back, No. 3367. Supposed by a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh com- plexion, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in a long drab ribbed coat, buttons down front, and hard felt hat. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Head, Oxford.— Bow- street, February 6. dress five stones ; a red leather Purse, containing £ 2, Gold, some Silver, and small Coins ; a blue Chesterfield Overcoat, velvet collar ; twelve silver dessert Knives and Forks, carved ivory handles. Information to the Director, C. I. D, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 9. Description of a man who is connected with the burglaries that are taking place in Shropshire and the adjoining counties : he is a convict on license, having been convicted at Radnorshire Assizes, March, 1870, in the name of THOMAS COPE, for burglary, and sentenced to 10 years penal servitude : he is 43 years of age, 5 feet 3f inches high, dark h& ir, large dark whiskers, heavy moustache, high fore- head, large scar on left side, broad hips, third finger of right hand contracted, aifchor on left a/ m, mole on- icont of neck ; dressed in a long dark overcoat, black felt hat. dark cloth trousers, strong boots, long muffler round neck'; he was born in Manchester, and has resided at the Rhos, Denbighshire, he has a small carpet bag with him. This man was appre- hended at Gobowen, on the morning of 5th instant, and in his possession was found a set of housebreaking implements, remanded until 14th instant. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Gough, Oswestry, or to Mr. Superintendent Wilde, Wrexham.— Bow- street, February 9. Wanted at Salford, on several charges of burglary and housebreaking: . RICHARD YATES, alias SMITH, alias MASON, alias JONES, alias JOE BROOKS, 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, may shave all off, parts his hair in centre, and wears it far down on forehead; belongs to War- rington, and may seek employment as a file cutter; was dressed in a brown tweed jacket and vest, and dark tweed trousers JOHN, alias JAMES SMITH, alias JONES, alias ROBERT BROOKS, brother of the above named, 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair, dark moustache and beard, may also shave ; is a native of Warrington, and is a member of the Kent Artillery Militia, and may seek employment as a glass cutter or enlist; was dressed in a black cloth jacket, grey cord trousers, and lace- up boots ; is accompanied by a woman also wanted, named ROSE MASON, alias HAMLET, 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, eyes, and hair, wears her hair wavy in front; is a native of Staffordshire ; was dressed in a black dress, with crape round cuffs ( stolen), and has a paisley shawl. Information to the Chief Constable, Salford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 6. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen, on 28th ultimo, at Strongford Farm, Trentham : a dark red roan horse Colt, 13^ hands high, 9 months old, white star on forehead,, nearly thorough- bred. Information to Mr. Superintendent McWilliams, Longton, or to Sergeant Hughes, Trentham.— Bow- street, February 11. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of burglary, at Hastings, during the night of 8th instant : seven silver tea Spoons, engraved ' H, P. W.' er ' P. H. W.'; two silver table Spoons ; two salt Daring the night of 6th instant, a dwelling- house at Totterdown, Bristol, was broken and entered and stolen : a pair of silver Sugar- tongs, marked, ' T. S. H.'; a dozen leaded Forks ; a pair of Nut- crackers ; a dozen fish Knives and Forks ; 6 dessert Knives, pearl handles ; a ditto Fork ; dozen Tea- spoons; an egg Spoon; a Sugar- spoon, all plated ; 2 pairs of high- legged woman's button Boots ; a pair of man's patent leather dress Boots ; a pair of Goloshes ; a damask white Table- cloth ; and about 10 lb. of spiced Beef. Information to Mr. Superintendent Drewett, Flax Bourton, Bristol, or to Sergeant Dewey, Somerset Constabulary, Totterdown, Bristol.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen from a shop at Pelsall, during the night of 6th instant: a leg of Mutton, 101b.; 121b. of Beef, bed; about £ 1 in Copper, and 6s. 6d. in Silver Money ; a number of penny Postage Stamps ; a sugar Bag, marked ' T. 149'; ana a meat Cloth. Also from a carpenters shop : a Brace and Bit; a small keyhole Saw, the latter was used to effect an entrance into the first named shop, by boring a hole through the cellar door. A man, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, middle age, with sandy moustache, is suspected, supposed a tramp. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hackney, Police Station, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Arnold, Police Station, Rushall, near Walsall Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen, on 22nd ultimo, from 42, Auriol- road, West Kensington, by means of housebreaking : a soup Ladle, beaded pattern ; a cream Jug, plain ; a Coffee- pot, ' Presented to Maria Brackenbury, by Sir Edward Brackenbury, in remembrance of her careful nursing of his son for 10 years,' thereon ; a Teapot; two flat bedroom Candlesticks ; a pair of Snuffers ; two butter Knives; twenty- five dessert Spoons ; fourteen table Ditto; sixteen tea Ditto ; a marrow Ditto, plain pattern ; two sauce Boats, and Ladels ; a double- handed Cup, fluted at bottom ; twenty- four large Forks ; fifteen small Ditto; four Salt- cellars ; two small Salvers, chased border; all engraved, crest— a lion lying under an oak- tree ; a silver Medal, ' Presented to William Lonnsdale Campbell, Bracken- bury, by Dover College'; all silver; a pair of long coral Ear- rings ; four ladies' gold Rings, one heavy wedding, one keeper, two red stones, with pearl in centre, one signet, one LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen, on 5th instant, by two tramps : 6 silver Tea- spoons, a good deal worn, five of them are marked ' E. T.', the other bears letters and marks that cannot be described. One man is about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, full sandy whiskers ; dressed in a grey coat, and a hard black felt hat. The other about 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, and dark hair and whiskers; dressed in a black coat, and soft black felt hat. They were begging, and went on to Huntingdon, where they lodged at the True Blue public- house, leaving early next morning. Informa'ion at the Police Station, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire.- - Bow- street, Feb. 11. Description of JOHN SMITH, supposed a native of Rotherham, charged on warrant with stealing from Peter- borough Workhouse, on 31st ultimo, the property of the guardians, a blue Coat and Waistcoat; a pair of moleskin Trousers ; 2 Shirts; 2 Neckerchiefs; 2 pairs Stockings; 1 hard felt billycock Hat; 2 pairs of Boots ; 1 pair of Shoes' the articles are numbered ' 35': he is about 40 years of age' 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair and moustache, was clean shaved, is a labourer ; was dressed in the stolen blue jacket and vest. Information to Head Con- stable Hurst, Police Station, Peterborough, Northampton- shire.— Bow- street, February 11. « Description of WILLIAM STOCKSLEY, a chimney sweep, charged with stealing a Chimney Sweeping Machine and five lengths of cane with hoops and screws at the ends' the whalebone or cane in the machine head is not all of one length; also a hand Brush, Sheet, soot Bag, at Redcar, on the 29th ultimo : he is 19 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high fresh complexion, dark brown hair, and proportionate make '• dressed in a black cloth coat, dark vest, grey tweed trousers' cheesecutter cap, and strong lace- up boots ; is a native of West Hartlepool, and served his apprenticeship with John Boyd, chimney sweep, Sunderland. Information to Mr. Superintendent Clarkson, North Riding Constabulary Office Guisbrough, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— — Bow- street, February 11. Stolen between 7 and 8 a. m. on 9th instant: . a suit of black Clothes, Coat double- breasted, Vest single- breasted • a white silk pocket Handkerchief; a white linen Do., with narrow black stripe round the edge were in the coat pocket, and two blacklead Pencils in the trousers pocket; a pair of 4 POLICE GAZETTE. February ] 1 elastic- side Boots, with patent leather up sides of " elastic and up instep 4- inch wide, have been recently tapped ; a pair of light giey cotton Stockings ; a blue and white plaid Shirt ; aud 7s. in Silver. By a man who had lodged in the house two nights, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light whiskers, rather high forehead, with a curl of hair on top of head ; dressed in dare brown jacket and trousers, hard black billycock hat, elastic- side boots. He said that he aud his father were local preachers, and worked on the Lbndon and North Western Railway at Derby. He booked from Pelsall to Birmingham by 8' 5 a. m. train on 9th instant. Stolen, on 10th instant, from an unfinished building, on Beggars' Knap, Doncaster: a hand Saw, marked J Moon ' on handle, and may also be marked '. G Cross'; a tenon Saw, 18 inches long nearly new, with brass back, marked ' G. Cross' on handle ; supposed by a tramp, about 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high ,- dressed in light jacket and cap. Information to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Station, Guildhall, Doncaster, Dorset.— Bow- st. February 11. Description of a man, who pledged some property stolen from this district : about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, ruddy complexion, dark hair, turning grey, greyish whiskers, stout build ; has the appearance of a brick- layer or mason, and wore a hard billycock hat with broad brim. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, February 11. Description of FRED. MICKLAND, alias NICKLING wanted on warrant for felony at Hull on 31st ultimo : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, slight dark moustache, pale complexion, large nose, with red mirk on the bridge, and small whiskers ; dressed in black worsted cord coat and vest, brown speckled trousers, low crowned black billycock hat, white muffler, and green kid gloves. Stated he belonged to the Inland Revenue Office, and that his father was Deputy Governor of Wakefield Gaol. Information to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 11. Wanted, on a warrant, for larceny, as bailee, of £ 25 4s.: HENRY NICHOLSON, late a sergeant in the Sunderland Police Force, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10| inches high, pale complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, slightly pockpitted, rather slender build, sharp features, slight whiskers, and moustache, is a native of Scorton, near Richmond ; dressed on 2nd instant, in a blue cloth reefing jacket, light trousers, jand hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Nicholson, Sunderland. — Bow- street, February 9. Absconded from Tunbridge Wells, on lst instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a Coat, a pair of Trousers, and other [ articles from a public house where he lodged 2 nights : a man named CARNELL, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, light sandy hair, few whiskers and moustache ; dressed in long brown single- breasted overcoat, light trousers, fitting tight, black Oxford hat, which appears too small for him; walks very upright. Has been in the Army. Information to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, February 9. Absconded from East Orchard, on 3rd instant, charged on warrant with stealing Two Sovereigns from hid lodgings : CHRISTOPHER LODGE, labourer, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, and walks a little lame ; dressed in dark speckled suit, black billycock hat, and hob- nailed lace- up bcots. He may try to enlist. Information to Mr. Superin tendent Pitfield, Dorset^ Constabulary, Shaftesbury, Dorset, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen, in transit between Chaddesley Corbett Post- office and the Cross Hotel, Bromsgrove, on 22nd ultimo : a Letter, addressed to the Collector of Excise, containing two Cheques ( one for £ 18 8s., the other for £ 12) on Hoare and Co., drawn by the Rev. F. A. Marriott; three half Notes (£ 5 each) of the Bank of England ; and ejglit penny and one halfpenny Postage Stamps. £ 3 reward will be given to any person giving such information and evidence as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to the Treasurer of the Chaddlesley Corbett Association for the Prosecution of Felons. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wheeler, Police Office, Stourbridge, Worcestershire,— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen from a lodging house at Neston, during 19th ult.: a silver lever Watch, old, had attached a piece of silver Chain ; a blue pilot Jacket, with red plaid lining, two pockets with flaps outside, and one inside left breast ; a blue pilot Vest; a pair of nailed lace- up Boots, nearly new. By a lodger named JOHN EATOCK, alias FRODSHAM, alias FRIEND, who had been living there a week, having come from Hindley, near Wigau, a collier, about 25 years of age, slender build, long features, about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and c; m- plexion, and wears slight whiskers and moustache ; may be wearing the stolen clothes. Is wanted for similar offences by the Wigan and Sheffield Police. Information to Chief Super- intendent Egerton, County Constabulary, Birkenhead, Cheshire, who holds a warrant.— Bow- street, February 9. In custody, charged with larceny : WILLIAM DAVIES, name supposed fictitious, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 31 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, light eyebrows, light sandy hair, parted in the middle, moustache same colour, { shaves clean ; dressed in grey loose coat aud vest, with black square markings, brown cloth ribbed trousers, elastic- side boots, and hard felt hat. In his possession was found a gold English lever Watch, open- face, white dial, No. 6249. He has been disposing of several gold Lockets, silver Alberts and Chains, quite new, for less than one- third of their value. The abov^ are supposed to be the proceeds of a burglary. Information to Mr. Superintendent Haigh, Town Hall, Kidderminster-.— — Bow- street, February 9. Description of WILLIAM HENRY STOCKTON, charged with stealing on 10th December last, at Werriugton Industrial School: a double breasted black ribbed cloth Overcoat, man's size, pocket on each side, ticket pocket on light side, a black velvet collar; a pair of white linen Cuffs, marked ' J. Savage'; and a Flute, 14 inches long, with 4 silver keys and 3 silver bands round it. He is 17 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, grey eyes, very large feet, and forefinger of right hand deformed, he has an uncle named Walton, living at Emily- street, off Chamber- road, Oldham. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hill, Burslem, who holds the warrant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen in Berwick- on- Tweed on 4th instant: a pair of brown tweed Trousers, half worn. By a man. about 21 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, long dark hair, no whiskers ; dressed in black shooting Coat and Vest, light grey tweed trousers, black felt hat, and elastic- side boots ; he had white bands, genteel appearance, said he belonged to Cardiff, but spoke with Glasgow accent; he left Berwick- on- Tweed, on the forenoon of 4th instant. Information to Head Constable Garden, Berwick- on- Tweed.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen at Pontypool on the night of 23rd ultimo : a gold open- face lever Watch, No. 6- 249 ; a silver open- face lever Watch, gold figures, No. 11883 ; a silver open- face Boston Lever, No. 11996; an open- face silver Geneva, gold figures, No. 6076 ; a silver open- face Geneva, No. 2997 ; two silver Levers, Nos. 5652, and 9919 ; six silver Genevas, Nos. 25151, 28041, 45375, 68971, 2997, 4' ricf 10839 ; a silver Geneva, gold, dial, No. 11261 ; a silver, Geneva, ' W. Phillips' engraved on it, No. 31045 ; a supposed Verge, No. 66785 ; a gold Geneva, ' Laniers' on face, one hand deficient, 18 carat cases; a double case silver Geneva, large size; thirteen Geneva Watches ; twenty- one silver Guards, curb pattern ; and seventeen gold Lockets, various patterns.
