POLICE GAZETTE. authority, The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. INFORMATIONS. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 8' 30p. m. 21st, and 8 30 a. m. 22nd ultimo, a t. Widnes was broken into, and stolen therein : 3 dark cardigan Jackets ; 3 light and 2 dark coloured cotton kerchiefs; 6 or 7 men's Shirts, different patterns and * ; 3 small Turkey red pocket Handkerchiefs ; 4 blue Jackets, two lined with grey linsey, two not liued, outside, black. iron buttons, man's size; 2 pairs of < s, stitched round with red worsted ; 4 printed woollen wo black and white spots, one red with black spots, > r black with yellow spots or black with red spots, » ; 12 pairs of men's knitted Socks, some dark grey, to light grey; 1 blue flannel Shirt, all new. At on <! 2nd ultimo, 2 Jackets and 2 Shirts ( part of this ^ were pledged in Warrington by a man, about of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, aved, full face ; dressed in blue reefer jacket, cloth jollen shirt grey with red stripes. And a woman, about 28 years of age y feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, light auburn hair, inclined to be wavy ; had an old black shawl over her head, and was of dissipated appearance. Stolen from East Bagshot Lodge, on 22nd instant, by means of burglary: three £ 5 Bauk of England Notes, stamped ' London and County Bank, Manningtree'; £ 28 in - Gold ; about £ 3 in Silver ; two Purses, one green silk with gold beads, the othei a leather clasp purse, and a email rgrl . aid black check flannel Bag ; and three of the following four £ 5 Bank of England Notes— Nos. 24942, date 14th November, 1878 ; 249^ 3, ditto ditto; 41103, 24th February, 1879 ; 41156, ditto ditto, fill stamped ' London and County Bauk, Manningtree.' In- formation to Mr. Superintendent Fisher, Suffolk Constabulary, Ipswich.— Bow- street, November 28. Stolen at Middle Hulton, about 8 p. m. 22nd instant double- breasted man's brown cloth- Overcoat, brown velvet, collar, two pockets outside with flaps, and cloth covered buttons ; a pair of man's black cloth Trousers, fall fronts, and white twill cotton lining, rather far worn ; a black billycock Hat; a silver watch Guard, cable pattern, broken at the swivel, and weighs about 5 oz. ; a silk Guard, with gold plated mountings, four hoops in centre, and a small imitation Kettle as an appendage ; and a email brown box of drawing Instruments. Suspicion attached to three men. Information to Mr. Superintendent Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Noventber 26. Stolen at Burton- on- Trent, on 23rd instant : a lady's • gold Watch, black figures, enamelled on back, open face, Paris manufacture ; a short gold Chain, about 4 inches long, • gold Key attached ; n large Scotch pebble Brooch, brown colour, set in Silver, oval shape, imitation chain round edge ; . a gold Brooch, with red atone, oval shape ; £ 3 10s. in Gold ; • and 9s. 6d. in Stiver. Information to Mr. Superintendent Harston, Burton - on - Trent, Staffordshire. — Bow - street, November 26. Oa 15th instant, Springhill House, Maisemore, near Gloucester, was entered, anil stolen therein : two copper Furnaces ; four house Bells ; and a brass hall Lamp ( since recovered). Supposed by a man from 27 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, light hair, sandy whiskers, beard, and moustache, blue eyes, round full face, fre6h coloured, believed to be pockmarked; dressed in soft grey cloth corded hat, old dark mixture jacket, corduroy trousers, soiled with red clay or brickdust, and strong lace- up boot; he is rather splay- footed, and walks rather stiff, generally carries one hand in his Jacket pocket. Information to Deputy Chief Constable chipp, Gloucester.-~ Bow- street, November 26, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALInG. Supposed stolen on the night of 25th ultimo, from a field at Sowdlev, near Market Drayton, a yearling Lamb, Shrop- shire Down Breed, with black face and lega ; the property of Mr. Samuel Glassy, farmer, of Sowdley, Salop. Information to Mr. Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Merricks, Market Drayton, Salop.— Bow- street, December 1. Stolen from a field at Brierley Hill, on 27th ultimo : one Hereford Heifer, coming 3 years old, white head, white streak down the back, roan coloured sides, horns about 10 or 12 ins. long, in fair condition; and two red and white spotted Stirks, coming 2 years old, very long hair on them, Irish breed, and in fair condition. Information to Mr. Superinten- dent Woollaston, Police Office, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, December 1. Stolen at Higher Blackley, on 26th ultimo, a dark brown Mare, which has since been found slaughtered at Wood's knacker yard mills, Miles Platting, by a boy, 11 years of age, fresh complexion, and full face ; dressed in dark clothes and Scotch cap. It is supposed he will be found sleeping out in brick kilns, & c. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester, " Lancashire.— Bow- strcst, December 1. Found in Brierley Hill on 25th ultimo, and supposed to have been stolen : a dark brown half bred Horse, aged, about 15 hands high, the near fore foot, and the off hind foot both white, saddle mark on chine, white mark down the face, tail cut, rough eoat, and in low condition. Information to Mr. Superintendent Woolianton, Police Office, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 1. Stolen from a stable at Fincham, on 2Dth instant: a Mare ( recovered). By a man, 22 years of age, 5 feet high, light complexion, no whiskers, slight scratch on face recently made; dressed in light- coloured overcoat, black chummy hat, tight legged trousers, and clogs. Is fond of singing and dancing in, public houses. Laat seen between Brandon and Bury st. Edmonds, Suffolk. Information to Mr. Superinten- dent Sewter, Downhain Market, Norfolk. — Bow- street, November 28. The bay cob Gelding, advertised as stolen from a stable at Ingham, Suffolk, on the night of 19th instant., is recovered, and a warrant has beau issued against CHARLES MANN, of Thetford, for stealing the same : Mann escaped from the police at Thetford, Norfolk, on 23rd instant, he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, full face, brown hair, small brown whiskers and moustache, stout made; dressed iu dark cloth coat, light cord trousers, and black soft chummy hat; is a baker by trade, but looks like a dealer, a native of Thetford, Norfolk. Information to Mr. Superintendent Clarke, Police Office, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.— Bow- street, November 28. Stolen near Lowe's Bam', Durham, on 20th or 21st inst, a light grey Mare, aged, 16 hands high, strongly made, clean legged, rough coat, and long mane and tail ; was suckling a foal when stolen. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunn, County Constabulary Office, Durham.— Bow- strect, Nov. 28. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen at Middlesbrough, on 25th ultimo, a dark blue rough nap cloth double- breasted Overcoat, lined with black Italian cloth, black velvet eollar, black covered buttona, sup- posed to have ' W. Pearson on loop inside collar, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, it is home- made and nearly new, had in one of the pockets a pair of olive coloured kid Gloves, black sewing on backs ; also a pair of brown or coffee coloured striped Trousers, no linings, blue jean pockets, full fall fronts, black buttons stamped ' W. Pearson,' both Coat and Trousers are man's size. By MATTHEW HOGG, a native of Middlesbrough, a potter, packer, or warehouse man, or may be labouring, 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 ins high, proportionate figure, pale complexion, light brown hair, and whiskers round his face ; dressed in a light or grey slack back jacket, white moleskin trousers, tied with baud round knees, a grey soft billycock hat, coloured necktiu and white collar, and also wears a white apron from his neck down- wards. Mav be found in | some common lodginghouse. If found, to be apprehended, and information to Chief Con- stable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. — Bow street, December 1. Stolen at Chalfont St Giles, on the night of £ 7th, or morning of 28th ultimo : an old- fashioned pair cased silver Watch, crack on dial, steel Chain and Key attached ; and a dark cloth veet, with light stripe, nearly new. By a man who lodged in the house two nights, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark eyes, fresh complexion, dark moustache and whiskers, small; dressed in a dark pilot jacket, dark vest, light plaid trousers, bmall pattern, mended up the leg. and dark cap with cheeaecutter peak. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunham, Police Station, Slough, or to Inspector Breene, Police Station, Beaconsfield, Bucks.— Bow- street, December 1. a tailor by trade, and stated that he had lately worked for Mr. Hills, tailor, Maidstone. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Fread, Kent Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- street, December 1. , ' Stolen from a hut OH the new railworks at Newick ; a pair of strong watertight Boots ; a pair of wool Stockings ; a white Slop ; and a Cap, By a navvy known as • NORFOLK SPIDES, about 35 years of age, G feet 0 inches high, very dark complexion, black hair, cut short, black whiskers, meeting under chin, and of dirty appearance; dressed in moleskin trousers, dark vest, and stolen boot ', slop, and cap; well known on new railway and public work.- Information to Mr. Superintendent Osbon, Lewes, Sussex— Bow- street, December 1. Absconded on 27th [ ultimo, chirged with stealing £ 31 10s. in Gold : a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, high cheek bones; dresa, cord trousers, faded blue pilot coat, round felt hat. - Metroolitan Police, W Division December 1. Stolen on 25th ultimo, at Severn Stoke, Upton- on- Severn : a pair of old black cloth Trousers, and au old grey mixture Veat, both much worn. By a tramping paiuter who was then lodging at Cottans cottage, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slender make, pale complexion, sandy moustache ; dressed when he left in dark blue or mixture coat, vest, and trousers, all much worn, he may be wearing the stolen vest and trouaers. Most likely to be found iu aonie low lodging house. Information to Mr. Superintendent Turner, Police Office, Upton- on- Severn, Worcestershire. - Bow- street, Dec. 1, Stolen from Wrexham, cn 24th instant, a japanned tin Cash Box, with brass handle, containing a Saving Bank Con- tribution Book, two Sovereigns, two Half Sovereigns, in Gold, and about £ 3 in Silver and Copper. Supposed by two men, one about 20 to 25 years of age, light hair, red face, and stoutly built; dressed in a dark over coat, and a flat crowne billy, cock hat. The other about " ve- ra of age, dark hair and whiskers, and stoutly built ; Urewied in dark clothes. Information to Chief Constable Leadbetter. or to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, November 28. Stolen on 22nd instant, 2 walking Coats, one blue diagonal, one grey mixture, one pair dark tweed Trousers, a black Vest, felt Hat, an engine turned silver Verge Watch, a gold Albert, silver 2- anna. Piece attached, a gold garnet Ring, diamond shape setting: by a man, 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, hair aud eyes brown ; dress, stolen clothes. Larceny. — Metropolitan Police, B Division, November 26. Description of H. SMITH, name supposed fictitious, of 12, Angel- street, Northampton, charged on a warrant with stealing two Watches, as bailee, at Great Houghton, near Northampton, on 10th instant: he is about 30 years of age, 6 feet 3 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, has whiskers and moustache, shaves chin rather stout proportion ; dressed in Bhort dark overcoat, with two rows of black buttons iu front, dark trousers, silk hat, and usually wears dark cloth gloves, carries a brown paper parcel which contains a bag with tools, & c. He gets watches & c. to repair or clean, and pawns them. Information to Inspector Hensher, County Constabulary, Northampton.— Bow- street, November 26. Absconded from Much Wenlock, at 6 p. m. on 24th instant, charged with attempted larceny : a youth about 17 yeara of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, full round features, rather stout build ; dressed iu dirty grey cloth cap, large white handkerchief or muffler, and short black jacket. Supposed to be a native of London. Informatiou to Mr. Superinten- dent Galliers, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Davies, Police Station, Much Wenlock, Salop.— Bow- street, November 26. Stolen at Thornhill, Dumfries, on 22nd instant: a small sized old black leather Purse, elastic band broken off, contain- ing 9 Half Sovereigns in Gold, and 1 Shilling in Silver. Supposed by a man, 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, or thereabouts, black hair aud whiskers, and slender make ; dressed iu dark coat, grey trousers, aud dark soft felt hat. Also stolen from Genzierhall, on 19th or 20th instant: a Suit of black tweed Clothes— a double- breasted shooting Coat, three black bone or composition buttons on each breast, two buttons at back, pockets outaide each skirt with flaps, one inside left breast, left Bkirt pocket has bueu torn and mended, Bingle- breasted Vest, having nix black buttons on it, and pair of Trousers ; a black silk Necktie ; pair of bhicher B > oti>, newly soled, two rows of sparables round outaide, three in centre of soles, aud heel plates; a Sovereign in Gold, and one Shilling in Silver; a pair of Scissors ; and a Bottle of Pomade. Supposed by a man, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 6 inches high, dark hair and moustache, but little if any whiskers, and slender make ; dressed in dark tweed clothes and hard felt hat. Information to the Chief Constable, Dumfries. — Bo^ street, November 26. Charged with stealing a small silver Geneva Watch, with chased back, at Eynsford, near Dartford, on 28th ultimo man, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark brown hair, cut short, pate face, no whiskers or moustache, has a very peculiar noae, being very fiat on the bridge, and a little turned on one aide, large ears, two front teet i project out; dressed in dark diagonal coat, dark trouaers and vest, black felt hard hat, dark necktie, and side- spring boots. Is Stolen at Tong : a light plaided Jacket, pockets on hips, one inside left breaat; a Vest, same material, three pockets outside; a pair dark plaided moleskin Trousers ; a red striped cotton Shirt, nearly new ; two Knives one amall pruning knife, one with two blade, saw, toothpick, and a nail passed in it. Stolen on 22nd instant, a gold malachite Brooch, a giit Locket, 2 gold Kings, one turquoise and pearls, one ruby and pearls, 5 pairs of earrings, three gilt, one silver filigree, one coral and gold, a black silk Skirt, nine Handkerchiefs marked ' E' : by a man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, complexien and hair dark, brown eyes, long thin nose, small moustache; dress respectable, speaks with French accent. Stolen on 21st instant, a lady's gold geneva Watch, gold dial, engine turned case, by a man, 20 years of age. 5 feet 6 inches high, fair, very light hair, effeminite voice and features: dress, old dark clothes, felt hat. Larceny. Metropolitan Police, Y Division, November 26. Absconded on 24th ultimo, charged with embezzlement, and stealing a costermonger's Barrow, ' Foster, Half- moon Crescent,' cut in several places thereon, containing six large Tins, a Barrel, and two Boxes ( empty): WILLIAM BENNETT, 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair com- plexion, light hair, short, right forefinger very much scarred fiom burns ; dressed in brown plaid coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, brown and white plaid muffler, blue Oxford shirt, flat crowned deerstalker hat, side- spring boots, all old : he may seek employment at Wholesale confectioners in the provinces. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, November 26. Absconded on 17th instant, charged with embezzlement: a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and moustache ( small) ; dressed in light cutaway coat, dark trousers and vest, lace boots, black hard felt hat.— Metrovolitan Police, P Division, November 26. Stolen on 21st instant, from 42, Stebbington- street, St. Pancras : a dark tweed Ulster, black cloth plain buttofis, buttons under fl. ip, three pockets outside, one inside left breast, has been repaired at tab ; a black ribbed frock Coat and Vest. Hy a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, very fair complexion and hair, no whiskers or moustache, decayed tooth in front of upper jaw ; dressed in black frock coat and vest, dark trousers, black felt hat, side- spring boots, respectable appearance. — Metropolitan Police, Y Division, November 26. Description of JOSEPH WILSON, late of 80, Pugh- road, Aston, Birmingham, who is charged on warrant with stealing a Cheque for £ 96 18s. 3d , the property of the Liver- pool and London and Globe Insurance Company, his masters: 36 to 38 years of a^ e, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, rather slender build, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, no beard or whiskers, wears glasses occasionally ; dressed in a grey shooting suit, and dark billycock hat; has been previously employed by the Midland Railway Coinpauy ; his mother is living at Retford, Notts, he was last heard of in London, on 12th instant. Information to Chief Superintendent Bond, Birmingham.— Bow- sireet November 26. Stolen during the night of 22nd instant, from an out- building it Wing, Bucks : tour white Ducks, and two white Drakes, of the Aylesbury breed. Supposed by a man about 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, rather long face, light brown hair, small light whiskers, and slight moustache ; dressed iu pilot jacket, dark cap with peak, and buttou on top, dark trousers, may be wearing corduroy or fustian trousers, which are supposed to havt spots of bloo. l ou them ; will endeavour to get work as a navvy or labourer to a bricklayer. Information to Mr. Superintendent Denaon, Aylesbury, or to Inspector Sutton, Police Station, Linslade, Bucks.— Born- street, November 26. Absconded from Thatcham, on 17th instant,- charged with larceny as bailee of a Watch and silver Neckchain : a tramping watch and clockmaker, who gave the name of JOHN WILLIAMS, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 1( 1 inches high, grey hair, little grey whiskers and moustache ; dressed in / old dark brown cloth top coat, old black cloth trousers, much worn, round hard bla. k hat, and old boots slit up in front. Carried a black leather bag, with strap over his shoulder; walks with a stick, ^ oes a little lame, and with a quick step. Was accompanied by a female wearing a black dress, and white straw hat. They occupied a room at a beer- house for a few days. The Watch has been recovered, sold. Information to Mr. Superintendent Bennett, Berks Con- stabulary, Newbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street. November 26. FRAud AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Stolen from Gasthwyl Hall, Berriew, on 24th ultimo : a pure white Pomeranian Dog, has a fiue brush tail, and very handsome, ai swers to the name of ' Charles.' £ I reward will be paid upon the recovery of the dog. Information to Chief Constable Danily, Newtown, or to P. O. Poole, Berriew, Mont- gomeryshire.— bow- street, D cember 1. Obtained by false pretences in Middlesbrough, on 25th instant, a dark blue rough nap Overcoat, lined with dark blue Italian cloth, two pockets outside, and one inside left breast; also a pair of Trousers with coff e- coloured stripes. By a mau who represented that the owner had met with an accident, 24 to 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, pro portionate make, pale looking, light brown hair, short whiskers, and round face; bad on a light coloured slack- backed jacket, white apron, bedaubed with pottery dust, clean white moleskin trousers, small light coloured cloth hat, coloured neckerchief, and white collar. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Station, Middlesbrough.— Bow- street, November 28. Charged on a warrant with obtaining on 30th ultimo, £ 11 10s. 9d. by means of a fictitious cheque, purporting to be drawn by Emily Nina Henderson, ou the secretary of the India Of! ce. London : OSBORNE, alias G. T. BIRCH, HARDING and MOORE, about- 25 years of age, short, fair complexion t nd hair, very small moustache, no whiskers or beard ; dre>- ed in brown overcoat, blue serge under, brown trousers. W as accompanied by a woman who passed as his wife, about the same age, dark hair and complexion, medium height; dres ed in brown stuff dress and jacket, trimmed with fur, . imitation beaver hat, trimmed with feathers, and sometiu. t • wore a blue waterproof or ulster. Absconded on 13th instant, charged with obtaining by fraud; 2 gold lever Watches, Nos. 29356 and 12104. 2 ladies' gold Watches, Nos. 78766 and 78697. 2 silver lever Watches Nos, 90107 and 90115. 5 gold Albert Chains, and 7 gold Lockets. JOHN FRASER, hair dresser and perfumer, lately of Great Junction- street, Leith, about CO years of a^ e, about 5 feet 8 inches high, stoutly made, grey hair and whiskers, bald on foiehead, flo id complexion, speaks Scotch, and has a forward aud demonstrative manner; dressed generally iu dark clotres. Supposed to have a brown painted wooden chest with him. It is supposed he intends leaving the country for America or Australia. Information to the Chief Constable, Leith.— How- street, November 28. Prison at Ruthin, waiting their trial at the next Quarter Sessions for Merioneth, at Dolgelly, on 6th January next, upon several charges of larceny : JAMES HARRIS, alias DUBLIN BOB, 47 years of age, 5 feet 8J inches high, light complexion, brown hair, bluish grey eyes, rather wesk, proportionate build, tapering chin, crooked nose, bencs to right, cut on outer angle of right eye, cupping mark on left breast. Supposed to be a native of Wrexham, of Irish parentage. Formerly worked on farms, but of late years has been tramping over North Wales and the border counties, and has been several times convicted of felonies. GEORGE BOWDEN, alias JOHN WILSON, 45 years of age, 5 feet 3£ inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, brown eyes, proportionate build, blue star back of Ipft wrist, small blue spots 3 inches above star on arm, end of first finger left hand bruised ; an Irish tramp. Has been several times convicted, in Denbighshire, for vagrancy aud other offences. ANDREW BURKE, alias WILLIAM JONES, 50 years of age, 5 feet ( if inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, bluish grey eyes, proportionate build, ' D' on left side, slightly bald top of head, slight cut on forehead over left eye, cut on outer angle right eye, thin evebrows and eyelashes, oval face. Supposed to be a native of Wolverhampton, of Irish parents, and a puddler by trade, but has been tramping for some years and has been several times convicted. He may probably endeavour to obtain civilian cloth- ing. He was convicted at Brighton on 8th October last for embezzlement, and sentenced to six calendar months hard labour.
