THE • i? \ Police Gazette, OR HUE- AND- C Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. gg- All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry, are to be transmitted under cover addressed to the Inspector- General of Constabulary. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. As the Law ( 48 Geo. 3, c. 140, s. 44,) only permits the insertion of Notices respecting Felonies, no other description of Notice can be inserted in the Hue- and- Cry.' DUBLIN, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1879. ENGLISH POLICE. DESCRIPTION of seven men, sentenced to six weeks hard labour each at Kendal 011 the 8th instant, on a charge of frequenting the Fair for the purpose of committing a felony. They were in three batches, viz., Nos. 1, 2, and 3 were together, 4 and 5 together, 6 and 7 together; there was another man in company with 6 and 7 who escaped. It is believed they are all convicted thieves, and that tho description they give of themselves is inaccurate ; any information respect- ing them will be gladly received by Chief Constable, Borough Police Offices, Kendal, 1. John Roy, about 24 years of age, says he is a plumber and gasfitter, from 39 or 49, Tobago- street, Calton, Glasgow :— 5 feet 6] inche3 high, fresh com- plexion, durk brown hair, gray eyes, pockmarked ( not deeply), large abscess marks right side of neck and jaw ; dressed in brown striped coat and vest, check tweed trowsers, long light gray overcoat, and black billy- oock hat. 2. Frederick Albert, says he is a general dealer, from 14, High- street, Bristol:— About 21 years of age, 5 1' eet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, very light brown hair, light moustache, long hook nose, good looking, has an impediment in his speech ; dressed in black ribbed coat and vest, brown striped trowsers, brown tweed ovcrcoat, brown billycock hat. 3. Thomas Brown, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes, says ho is a jockey from 32 or 36, Thomas- street, New- castle- on- Tyne:— Dressed in a dark tweed suit, black overcoat, and black billycock hat. He is a little sharp intelligent youth. All three are smart and well dressed, and are believed to have come from some of the large towns in Yorkshire or Lancashire. 4. John Martin, says he is a tailor from London, but when arrested he stated he was a butcher from Carlisle, this was false: — From 40 to 4.3 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, slightly turning gray, hazel eyes, either was or pretended to be slightly dull of hearing; dressed in gray tweed coat and vest, brown trowsers, dark cloth overcoat, soft black billycock hat. 5. John Welch, says he is a painter from Belfast:— About 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 j inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, light . moustache, and whiskers on end of chin, blue eyes, very slightly pock- pitted, lower right eyelid cut and let down a little, dressed in brown tweed suit, black ribbed overcoat, and hard black billycock hat; of very respectable appearance. 6. John Vincent, says he is a jeweller from Canada, travelling for the good of his health, and resides in London : — About 50 years ol age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark brown hair turning gray, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, very dark moustache, sloutish well- built man*, very smart, several scars on forehead, scar on knuckle of middle finger, right hand, dressed in black ribbed cloth suit, black cloth overcoat, and high top hat; it is believ- ed this man is a receiver or London megsman ; in his possession were found, two drafts on the London Bank of Mexico and South America ( limited), one for £ 6 the other for £ 4, payable to M. A. Smith, dated November, 1875, and on a piece of paper, " 2 Pratt, Fleet- street," and some French stamps. 7. George Spencer, says he lives at Leicester, is a slipper- maker, and was born at Peterborough:— About 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, gray eyes, slightly pockpitted, large scar top of right eyebrow, thick lips, coarse features; dressed in gray Melton suit, raised scams, brown ribbed overcoat, black billycock hat; said he was a horse- jobber, and worked for George Palmer, horse- dealer, Leicester. Borough. Police Office, Kendal,' ' ( 0k November 12, 1879. ( 24453 42019.) DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. DESCRIPTION of the undermentioned, who are wanted for having uttered a large number of forged National Bank notes for £ 10 each, in Dublin, on 18th ultimo:— 1. Thomas Green, alias Harrington, about 32 years old, 6 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, scar on forehead, mole on right chest, lost a bottom tooth, right middle finger deformed; was convicted of horse- stealing at Guild- ford, Surrey, February, 1874, sentenced to 5 years penal servitude, and released on licence from Mill- bank, February, 1878. • 2. Name unknown, about 40 years old, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, very stout build, dark hair, black moustache and side whiskers, chin shaved. 3. Name unknown, about 36 years old, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, black moustache, jaws and chin shaved, erect military gait, and gentlemanly manner. All three represented themselves as horse- dealers, were comfortably dressed, spoke with strong English accent, had no luggage but a black Gladstone bag, they obtained nearly £ 900, chietly in Irish bank notes. John Cross, alias George Allen, one of the gang who is in custody, is also a convict. JOHN MALLON, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G. Division, 6th November, 1879. ( R. 3463.) PARTICULARS relative to English licence- holder John Higgins ( z. 802), convicted in India by Court Martial, on the 29th October, 1873, for drunkenness and insubordination and sentenced t) 7 years penal servitude :— 25 years of age on conviction, single, is a soldier, born at Belfast, resided in India with his regiment before conviction; brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, 5 feet 6^ inches high; scar on throat, D on left side, and two scars on centre of back. This convict was discharged from Portsmouth Convict Prison, on the 12th May, 1879, and went to reside at Belfast; he left his residence at Belfast without notifying same to the R. I. Constabulary, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic. cap. 112. General Prisons Board, October 13, 1879. ( 17463 M.— 29230.) PARTICULARS relative to licence- holder John Larkin, 227- 14313, convicted in Dublin Cit^, at Recorder's Court, on 9th June, 1875, for larceny, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude :— 20 years of age on conviction, can read and write, a Roman Catholic, single, a labourer, born in Dublin, resided before conviction in Bolton- street, Dublin, his friends reside at Rathmines, county Dublin; dark brown hair, gray eye ( left eye blind), dark brown eye- brows, regular nose, small mouth, fair complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 3J inches high; is marked with anchor back of left hand, and cross on back of right, bracelet on left wrist, heart on left fore- arm, and J. on same arm, ring on second left finger, scar on left eyelid, on each eyebrow, and on forehead over left temple. This convict was discharged from Lusk Prison, 7th June, 1879, and went to reside in Dublin. He left No. 8, Lurgan- street, Dublin, his last place of residence, without notifying same to the Metropolitan Police, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th sec. of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112 General Prisons Board, October 13, 1879. ( 17463 M.— 29230). DESCRIPTION of a person, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 27th October, 1879, in the barony of Duhallow, parish of Clonfert, coined one sixpenny- piece, and obtained the sum of £ 3 2*. 9d. from Patrick Lehane, by false pretences on 28th October, 1879:— Lame of left leg, which is ' short; walks with a stick; pock- marked; supposed pearl on one eje; blue mark on right wrist; dark brown eyes, long drooped nose, fresh complexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 50 years of age, dark hair and sandy whiskers; wore a blue frieze coat with brass buttons, light cord trowsers, double- breasted vest of brown or gray frieze, with two rows of white studs; supposed to be a tinker. DESCRIPTION of Robert O'Connell ( mother's sur- name Coleman), native of Cork city, who stands charged with having, on the 1st day of November, 1879, in the barony of Barrymore, parish of Carrig- toohill, stolen a horse the property of John Moore, of Ballintubbrid, having falsely represented that he was sent by a gentleman to purchase the horse, and when trying his action as a saddle horse, rode away with him :— Smart active make, military gait, and has now the appearance of a horse- trainer, hazel or blue eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair 5 wore a round low black hat, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; has been in the army and discharged for bad conduct. DESCRIPTION of Thomas Murphy, native of Kilcas- kin North, who stands charged with having, on the 15th day of October, 1879, in ihe barony of Dunhal- low, parish of Castlemagner, obtained £ 20, by false pretences, from W. F. S. Barry, Esq., J. P. :— Remark- ably stout, square shoulders, walks erect, heavy gait, gray eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, round full face, 6 feet high, about 40 years of age, light brown hair, small dark whiskers in line with ears, but be- lieved now to be shaved off; wore a jerry hat, whitish tweed frock coat, corduroy trowsers, tweed vest, high- low boots ; is a farmer. DESCRIPTION of Manus Murray ( mother's surname M'Garvy), native of Barnes Upper, who stands charged with having, on the 25th October, 1879, in the barony of Kilmacrenan, parish of Kilmacrenan, seriously assaulted Denis Murray by striking him with a spade on the head, from the effects of which blow he died on 30th October:— Light hair on upper lip and chin ; never shaved ; blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, flit face, stout make, 6 feet 5^ inches hi( ih, about 20 years of age, dark brown hair ; wore a black cap, gray frieze coat, cord trowsers, gray vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of James Walsh, native place un- known, who stands charged with having on the 19th October, 1879, in the barony of Glenawley, parish of Cleenish, stolen three calves, the property of Elizabeth Rutledge, and who has been committed for trial to Quarter Sessions:— Knees slightly bent inwards, teeth bad, two upper front teeth broken, a deep pock- mark on left cheek, a few dark hairs on right cheek, growing on a mole, large blue eyes, sir tight nose, pale complexion, thin face, slight make, 6 feet 7$ inches high, about 21 years of age, fair hair; wore a cloth cap with peak, brown tweed frock coat, moleskin trowsers, tweed vest, a large muffler round neck belt round waist; is a tramp. DESCRIPTION of Daniel O'Sullivan, native of Batterfield, who stands charged wiih having, on the 27th February, 1879, and 26th May, 1879, in the barony of Trughenackmy, parish of Tralee, forged the mark of Bryan Connor, to bills of £ 7 10a. and £ 8 10s. respectively, on the Munster Bank of Tralee, and which were discounted, and which by information of 18th September, last, were not authorized by the said Bryan Connor:— Stooped about the shoulders, awkward gait, and appears thoughtful- looking and keeps his head down i brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 40 years of age, brown hair, dark whiskers turning gray, shaved the chin only; wore a black soft jerry hat, dark frieze coat, dark tweed trowsers, tweed vest; is a farmer. DESCRIPTION of Michael Pender ( Prendergast), native of Athy, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 7th or morning of 8th November, 1879, in the barony of Kilkea and Moone, parish of Narraghmore, stolen an ass, cart, and poultry ( all recovered), the property of Jacob Glynn, Moone :— Shaves face, except moustache, which is light and brown; gray eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, oval face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 41 years of age, brown hair; wore a cloth cap, or pet- haps a jerry hat, linen jacket, moleskin trowsers, light vest; looks like a pensioner; was in America for thirteen years ; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Peter William Daveis, alias Darkie, native of Manchester, England, who stands charged with having, on the 16th day of October, 1879, in the barony of East Offaly, parish of Ballysax, absconded, taking with him a gold watch and gold Albert chain, the property of M. Ryan :— Dark eyes, rather big nose, yellow complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 3 inches high, about 25 years of age, dark hair ; wore a black low round hard hat, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; attends on jockeys at races. DESCRIPTION of a gold watch and gold Albert chain, the property of Michael Ryan, which were stolen from ihe stand- house, Curragh, parish of Ballysax, barony of East Offaly, on the 16 th October, 1879, by Peter William Daveis, alias Darkie, viz. :— 1. A gold lever watch, open face, jewelled in 6 holes, a small mark at or near the key- hole caused by a fall; " M. Ryan " engraved on back, maker's name, O'Hanlon; value for about £ 25. This watch at the time it was taken was out of repair. 2. A gold Albert chain, short link pattern, part of a watch- key attached to chain in place of locket; value for about £ 5. DESCRIPTION of two persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 25th October, 1879, in the barony of Fassadineen, parish of Donaghmore, assaulted and attempted to rob Michael Dullard of a sum of money on the high- way :— 1. Unknown— Stout make, 5 feet 6 to 8 inches high, about 30 years of age : wore a short coat. • 2. Unknown— Stout make, 5 feet 4 to 6 inches high, about 17 or 18 years of age ; wore a cap. . DESCRIPTION of two persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 27th day of October, 1879, in the barony of Ballyboy, parish of Ballyboy, entered the dwelling- house of Michael Rigney, of Broughal, and stolen therefrom £ 10 in single notes, and two half- crowns. 1. Unknown— Pale complexion, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 26 years of age; wore a low round bat, blue coat, dark trowsers; supposed to be a tramp. 2. Unknown- Fair complexion, smooth face, slight make, 6 feet 8 inches high, about 20 years of age; wore an old round hat; is supposed to be a tramp. Ferbane, October 29, 1879. ( 21187 c 41596.) DESCRIPTIONS of James Devlin and Rose Devlin, bis wife, natives of Bellaghy, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 9th October, 1879, in the barony of Loughinshollen, parish of Kil- cronaghan, stolen a bullock, the property of Samuel Lyle :— 1. James Devlin— Rather down- cast look, large mouth, thick lips, mark of ulcer on one of his le^ s below the knee, blue eyes, regular nose, fresh com- plexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 34 years of age, fair hair; wore an old soft black hat, old brown coat, brown trowsers; is a low butcher. 2. Rose Devlin— Bold- faced, speaks and walks quickly, wants a tooth, compressed lips, gray eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 86 years of age, wore an old gray Ulster cloak,, old brown bonnet; attends fairs and markets. Magherafelt, Nov. 12, 1879. ( 23891 c— 41153.) The hide of the stolen bullock belonging to Samuel Lyle, and described in Hue- and- Cry of 21st of last month, has been found in possession of a man named William J. Smith, to whom it was sold by Rose Devlin, wife to a low butcher named James Devlin. James Lewis, Private in 105th Regiment, ( em- bezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 80th May, 1879. Longford. Thomas M'Feitty ( serious assault), not arrested; Hue and- Cry, 3rd June, 1879. Louth. Michael Mintha ( assisting in the sale of stolen cattle), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 22nd July, 1879. The man, name unknown ( cattle stealing) not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th June, 1879. William Joseph Boylan ( forgery), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 24th January, 1879. Mayo. DUBLIN CASTLE, 23rd October, 1879. WHEREAS it has been represented to the Lord Lieutenant, that on the 30th September, 1879, Mr. John Sydney Smith and his son Mr. Sydney Edward Smith, when returning from Ballycroy, were fired at, at Claggan Mountain, about half- way between the former place and Mulranny, by four men, of whom three escaped, and one, Thomas Howard, was shot dead by Mr. Sydney Edward Smith: His Grace, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the perpetrators of this outrage, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the conviction of any of the persons who committed the same; and a further reward of TWO HUNDRED POUNDS for such private information as may lead to the sam Jl result. And His Grace is also pleased to offer a FREE PARDON to any person concerned in or privy to the said outrage, in case of his giving such information as THE POLICE GAZETTE, OS, HUE- AND- CRY, NOVEMBER 18, 1879. fll lead to the conviction of the persons, or any of em, concerned in the outrage aforesaid. DUBLIN CASTLE, 9th September, 1879. WHEREAS it has been represented to the Lord' Lieutenant, that, about the hour of 12.15 o'clock, A. M., on the 25th ultimo, Thomas Tandy, Esq., was found dead on his own land at Johnsbrook, in the county of Meath, having been murdered by some person or persons unknown; His Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this murder, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the person or persons who committed the same; and a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS for such private information as shall lead to the same result. DESCRIPTION of a watch, the property of the late Thomas Tandy, of Johnsbrook, county Meath, esq., stolen on the day of his murder, 24th August, 1879:— gold hunting watch, three- quarter- plate lever, with enamel dial, and engine- turned cases; " West and Son, Dubhn, 4544," engraved upon the move- ment, and probably ihe name " West and Son" also painted on the dial.
