THE Police Gazette 9 OR HUE- AND- C: Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry, are to be transmitted under cover addressed to the Inspector- General of Constabulary. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. As the Law ( 48 Geo. 3, e. 140, s. 44,) only permits the insertion of Notices respecting Felonies, no other description of Notice can be inserted in the Hue- and- Cry. DUBLIN, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1879. ENGLISH POLICE. £ 18 REWARD. WANTED, on a Warrant, for stealing from his em- ployers at Chester, on the 13th October, 1879, the sum of £ 265, W. Cochrane, age about 35 : about 5 ft. in. high ; thin ; sallow complexion ; d* rk gray moustache and " imperial," very slight whiskers; heavy eyebrows, pale blue eyes ; foreign looking. Dressed in black morning coat, white shirt and turn- down collar ; narrow black tie ; dark trowsers ; felt Alpine hat, with crown dinged in ; and shabby elastic- side boots. Has been cashier, speaks several languages, and writes shorthand. His wife and children will probably be with hiin. She had with her three yellow tin trunks with brass locks, a hamper and a brown paper parcel. A reward of £ 5 will be paid for such information as 6hall lead to his arrest and conviction, and five per cent, of the amount recovered. PARTICULARS relative to English licence- holder John Higgins ( z. 802), convicted in India by Court Martial, on the 29th October, 1873, for drunkenness and insubordination and seotenced to 7 years penal servitude :— 25 years of age on conviction, single, is a soldier, born at Belfast, resided in India with his regiment before conviction; brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, 5 feet inchea high; scar on throat, D on left side, and two scars on centre of back. This convict was discharged from Portsmouth Convict Pfison, on the 12th May, 1879, and went to reside at ' Belfast; he left his residence at Belfast without notifying same to the R. 1. Constabulary, and his present whereabouts are unkco vn. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic. cap. 112. PARTICULARS relative to licence holder John Larkin, 227- 14313, convicted in Dublin City, at Recorder's Court, on 9th June, 1875, for larceny, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude :— 20 jears . of age on conviction, can read and write, a Roman Catholic, single, a labourer, born in Dublin, resided before conviction in Bolton- street, Dublin his friends reside at Rathmines, county Dublin; daik brown hair, gray eye ( left eye blind), dark brown eye- brows, regu'ar nose, small mouth, fur complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 3£ inches high ; is marked with anchor back of left hand, and cross on back of right, bracelet on left wrist, heart on left fore- arm, and J. on same arm, ring on second left finger, scar on left eyelid, on each eyebrow, and on forehead over left temple. This convirt was discharged from Lusk Prison, 7th June, 1879, end went to reside in Dublin. He left No. 8, Lurgan- street, Dublin, his last place of residence, without notifying same to the Metropolitan Police, and his present whereabouts are unknowr. DESCRIPTION of David Thompson and Andrew Green, natives of Ballymoney, who stand charged with having, on the 10th day of October, 1879, in the barony of Upper Dunluce, parish of Ballymoney, stolen a sum of money in silver and notes amounting to over £ 8, the property of Robert C. Martin, Solicitor, David Thompson's employer ;— 1. David Thompson— Brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, freckled round face, medium make, 4 feet 5 inches high, about 15 years of age, light brown hair; wore a cloth cap, gray tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is an attornfy's writing clerk. 2. Andrew Greer — Dark brown eyes, thin nose, swarthy complexion, small face, slight make, 4 feet 3 inches high, about 12 years of age ; wore a cloth cap, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a broom seller. A warrant is in the hands of the Constabulary at Ballymoney for David Thompson's arrest; he was accompanied by No. 2. October 12, 1879. ( 28869c 41121.) DESCRIPTION of three persons, names unknown, suj posed natives of Braid, near Broughshane, who stand charged with having, on the 26th September, 1879, in the barony of Lower Antrim, parish of Glenwherry, and townland of Skerrywherry, fired at Thomas, George and James Tippin, gamekeepers to Victor Coates, Esq., wounding George Tippin, with shot in fifteen places. They were armed with two guns, a double and single barrel, and had a grey- hound, of a dun and white colour, with black muzzle, and bad their faces blackened:— 1. Unknown, very smart active appearance, slight make, 5 feet 10 inches high; wore a round hat over face, dark coat, and trowsers. 2. Millford, in the county of Donegal, by some persons . unknown: his Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this outrage, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE THOUSAND POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the arrest of the persons who committed the same, or any of them. And His Grace is also pleased to offer a FREE PARDON to any person concerned in or privy to the said murder, other than the persons who actually com- mitted the same, in case of his giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the persons, or any of them, concerned in the murder aforesaid. DESCRIPTION of George Walker, native of Belfast, who stands charged with having, on the 9th October, 1879, in the barony of Tyrkennedy, parish of Ennis- killen, embezzled the sum of £ 12 7s. 6d., the moneys of his employers, the Singer Manufacturing Com- pany :— Smart in manner and appearance, small moustache and whiskers, full brown eyes, regular nose, reddish complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 27 years of age, reddish hair; wore a dark coat, trowsers and vest. Du « cniPTioN of Patrick Stanton, junior, native of Lettercallow Island, who stands charged with having, on the 13th day of October, 1379, in the barony of Moycullen, parish of Killannin, seriously assaulted Michael Hannon l> v striking him with a stone on the head from the effoc( s of which blow his life is in danger:— Is good looking, blue eyes, regular nose, ruddy complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 10 inches hi^ h, about 20 years of age, fair hair, large sandy whiskers; wore a soft black hat and gray flannel suit; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION* of Pierce Deymend, native of Carrick- on- Suir ( where his father resides), and Michael Walsh, native of Athlone, who stand charged with having, on the 9th of October, 1879, in the barony of East Offaly, parish of Ballysax, taken from a box, in a Hut in E Lines, Curragh Camp, the sum of £' 4 6s., being the money of John Duke, Shoemaker, by whom they were employed:— 1. Pierce Deymend— Gray eyes, sharp nose, sallow complexion, plump face, slight make, 5 feet 5 inches liigh, about 24 years of nge, dark hair ; blick mous- tache ; shaves all his face but upper lip; wore a jerry hat, short black coat, tweed trowsers, no vest. 2. Michael Walsh— Has a slight halt, nose and cheeks red, scurvy- like, with pimples, small gray eyes, regular nose, reddish complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 60 years of age, gray hair, shaves all his face; wore a long brown coat, and tweed trowsers. DESCRIPTION of James Coffey, native of Queen's County, who stands charged with having, on the 19th December, 1867, in the barony of Kilkea and Moone, parish of Killellan, murdered William Dunne, of Ballyadams, Queen's County. ( See Hue- and- Cry of December, 1887.) It is supposed that this offender has returned to the country:— Down- looking appear- ance, heavy upper lip, speaks with coarse flat accent and slight lisp, shaved, except small whiskers; sunken gray eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, full face, medium make, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, about 65 years of age, gray hair; wears a tall hat ( worn well down on foreheaj), blue coat, corduroy trowsers, black vest. DEscriPTiON of Patrick Egan ( mother's surname Egan), native of Shannonharbour, who stands charged with having, on the 2nd day of October, 1879, in the barony of Garrycastle, parish of Tisaran, been one of a party who grievously assaulted Thomas Rourke and James M'Cormack, from the effects of which their lives are now in danger:— Brown eyes, long thin nose, fresh complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 11 inches high, about 24 years of age, light brown hair; wore a soft hat, blue pilot sack coat, dark tweed trowsers and vest, Wellington boots ; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Dwyer ( mother's suiname Shanahan), native of Drumelougher, and James Cummins, native of' Towerhill, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 5 th October, 1879, in the barony of Owneybeg parish of Tuogh, seriously assaulted Martin Hayes, of Drumsally, by striking him with a stone on the head and thereby placing his life in danger:— 1. Patrick Dwyer— Hazel eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, rouud face, stout make 5 feet 7 inches high, about 30 years of age, light brown hair ; wore a soft hat, frieze coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a labourer. 2. James Cummins,— Gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexioa, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches higb, about 18 years of age, brown hair; wore a soft hat, dark tweed coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a labourer. The man, name unknown ( cattle stealing) not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th June, 1879. William Joseph Boylan ( forgery), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 24th January, 1879. Mayo. DESCRIPTION of Maria M'Andrew, native of Bangor, who stands charged with having, on or about the 9th June, 1879, and on i3th June, 1879, in the barony of Erris, parish of Kilcommon, stolen a letter which contained a pfst office order for 9s., and a letter containing a half sovereign, the property of the Post- master General, she being postmistress at Bangor at ' the time; she will endeavour to escape to Americ*. She absconded from Bangor on 6th inst.; she was out* on bail :- r- Dark eyes, regular nose, sallow com- plexion, thin face, slender make, 6 feet 4 inches high, about 20 years of age, black hair j wore a black hat, black jacket and dark dress. DESCRIPTION of three persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the evening of the 25th of Soptember, 1879, in the barony of Kilmaine, parish of Kilcommon, attempted to rob John Murphy on the public road near Holly- mount:— 1. Unknown— Stout make, 5 feet 7 inches higb, about 30 years of ai? e, dark hair, large dark beard, short neck; spoke as if he had been a labourer in England. 2. Unknown— Stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 30 years of a^ e, large dark beard, short neck; spoke as if he had been a labourer in England. 3. Unknown— Slender make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 25 years of age, dark hair and no beard; wore a low hat. Ballinrobe, Sept, 28, J879. ( 23621 o.— 40710.) DESCRIPTION ot Patrick J. Cogan. native of Bally- ragget, county Kilkenny, who stands charged with having, between the 20th August and 13th Septem- ber, lb79, in the barony of Gallen, parish of Kilcon- duff, at Swinford, embezzled the sum of £ 1,6415$. 9d., the property of the Hibernian Joint- Stock Bank Directors:— Springs on toes in walking; quiet de- meanour; gray eyes, thin regular nose, fair com- plexion, long thin face, slender make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark hair ; wore a dark hat, short dark tweed coat, gray tweed trowsers, dark vest; is a teller in the Hibernian Bank. Generally carries a stick, and keeps left hand in coat pocket when walking. He may try to escape in the garb of a Priest. Has two brothers in America. The Sub- Inspector at Swinford holds a warrant for his arrest, and £ 100 reward is offered by the Hibernian Bank for his capture. ( 23530 o.— 40566.) KBEAS it has been represented to the Lord tenant, that, about the hour of 12.15 o'clock, A. ymon the 25th ultimo, Thomas Tandy, Esq., was 1 unil dead on his own land at Johnsbrook, in the county of Meath, having been murdered by some person or persons unknown; His Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this murder, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the person or persons who committed the same ; and a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS for such private information as shall lead to the same result. By His Grace's Command, T. H. BURKE. The above reward will be paid, on conviction, by Captain the Honorable T. 0. Plunkett, the Resident Magistrate at Navan, to those who may become entitled to it under the conditions of this Procla- mation. DESCRIPTION of a watch, the property of the late Thomas Tandy, of Johnsbrook, county Meath, esq., stolen on the day of his murder, 24tli August, 1879:— gold hunting watch, three- quarter- plate lever, with enamel dial, and engine- turned cases; " West and Son, Dublin, 4544," engraved upon the move- ment, and probably the name " West and Son '* also painted on the dial. This watch has been in wear since 1803, and can be identified. Athboy Sept. 4, 1879. ( 23165 c 40181.) DESCRIPTION of James Duff, native of King3court, county Cavan, who stands charged with, having, on the 10th September, 1879, at Trowse, Norfolk, England, absconded with £ 110, the property of Patrick Carolan, Curtubber, county Meath, which he received to purchase cattle at the fair of Drogheda :— Several scars on hoad, which he jerks when walking, warts on right side of nose, gray eyes, regular nose, florid complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 45 years of age; wore a brown tweed coat and trowsers, black cloth vest; is a cattle jobber. DESCRIPTION of Christopher Wheelar ( mother's surname Campion), native of Mountrath, who stands charged with having, on 15th day of September, 1879, in the barony of Upperwoods, parish of Offerlane, stolen a coat, the property of John King, of Derry- hay, which has been since recovered :— Stooped shoulders, heavy gait when walking, brown eyes, regular nose, dirk complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 28 years of age, dark hair; wore a soft hat, blue coat, tweed trowsers, and vest, wore all his beard, which is dak; is a quarry- man and stone- breaker. DESCRIPTION of a person, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 26th day of September, 1879, at Shegoragh, in the barony of Boyle, parish of Boyle, visited the houses of Thomas M'Grath and John M'Donough, at night, armed with a gun, for the purpose of intimidating certiin persons:— Dark complexion, face almost covered with black hair, probably false, large stout make, 6 feet high, 40 years of agej dark hair, tall silk hat, dark cloth coat, trowsers, and vest; suspected agent of an illegal society, going about intimidating persons obnoxious to members of the society, armed with a gun, and wore a cape like a policeman's, a belt, and ammunition pouches, and a gold watch chain; looks like a policeman in plain clothes, or drilled man.
