DUBLIN, TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 1879. ENGLISH POLICE. DESCRIPTION of John Hall Blackburn, a tramping cooper, charged on a Warrant with breaking and enter- ing a watchmaker's shop at South Stockton, on the 7th of May, last, and stealing one gold watch, and several silver lever watches, some of which have been recover- ed:— He is 35 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, long thin face, sharp nose, gray eyes white eyebrows, brown hair, light or ginger moustache and chin ender ( supposed shaved off), a bald place on top of head about the size of " a five shilling piece, a slight scar on cheek and neck, lost some teeth at front; dressed when he left here, in a dark coat, gray trowscrs, black and white vest, white silk neckerchief tied in a sailor's knot, black soft billycock hat, which he wears over his eyes ; is a native of Sunderland where he has a wife living; this man left here about 5 weeks ago and is supposed to be working at a cooper's shop in some part of Ireland; photo on application. ESCAPED from the Lockup at Melton Mowbray, about 5.30 p. m. on the 6th instant, a man who was remanded on a charge of larceny; he gave ,' iis name John Connor, labourer, Dublin. He is about 22 years of age, 5 ft. 4 in. high, slender made, sallow- looking, dark hair cut short, no whiskers, very slight moustache; dressed in holland jacket, very light fustian trowsers, appear to have been washed ; rather light boots, brass eyelet holes and a hole cut in the upper of one of them ; wears a strap round his waist, no braces, dark blue mixed woollen scarf and black billey hat. DESCRIPTION of Henry Keenan, native of county Antrim, who stands charged with embezzlement of money at Ballybeg, in the barony of Lower Toome, parish of Ahoghill, and county of Antrim:— Down- looking appearance, very heavy eyebrows, short neck, square shoulders, dark eyes, short nose, dark com- plexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 35 years of age, dark hair; wore a cap, dark twoed coat, trowsers and vest; is a clerk. DESCRIPTION of William John Catherwood, native ofc Innisrush, county Londonderry, who stands canraed with having, on the 28th July, at Ardna- glasif, in the barony of Upper Toome, parish of Ballyscullion Grange, seriously assaulted Thomas Duffin : — Large gray eyes, thin nose, pale complexion, long thin face, slight make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 30 years of age, fair curly hair and whiskers; is a farmer and weaver. PARTICULARS relative to Police Supervisee Mary Purcell, convicted at Carlow, eounty Carlow, on 24th June, 1878, for stealing a chemise, and sentenced to 12 calendar months hard labour aod ( at termination thereof) 3 years police supervision:— 10 years of age on conviction, married, a labourer, born in Castle- comer ; fair hair, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, long visage, slight make, 5 feet inches high. The above- named prisoner was released from Mountjoy Female Prison, on the 23rd ultimo, and took her discharge for Kilkenny, but she has not reported herself to the Constabulary there, and her present whereabouts is unknown. WHEREAS it has been represented to the Lord Lieutenant, that about the hour of Five o'clock, on the morning of the 22nd ultimo, the body of James Neagle, was found on the public road, in the townland of Kineilty, in the county of Clare, murdered by some person or persons at present unknown. His Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this murder, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the arrest of the person or persons who committed the same. By His Grace's Command, T. H. BURKE. The above reward will be paid, on conviction, by Thomas Butler, esq., the Resident Magistrate at Kilkee, to those who may become entitled to it under the conditions of this Proclamation. DUBLIN CASTLE, 29th July, 1879. WHEREAS it has been represented to the Lord Lieutenant, that on the night of 20th June, 1879, an old man named Thomas Devonport, who resided in the townland of Ballaghaline, in the parish of Killilagh, and county of Clare, was strangled in his bed by some person or persons unknown. His Grace, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the perpetrators of this Murder is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such infor- mation as shall lead to the arrest of the person or persons who committed the same. By His Grace's Command, T. H. BURKE. The above reward will be paid, on conviction, by T. Butler, Esq., the Resident Magistrate at Kilkee, to those who may become entitled to it under the conditions of this Proclamation. Cork. DESCRIPTION of John Barrett, native of Coom ( Midleton), who stands charged, on suspicion, with having, on the 2nd day of August, 1879, in the barony of Barrymore, parish of Dunbollogue, wilfully set fire to his dwelling- house:— Stoops when walking, has a tremulous motion in right hand, shaves all his face, wild dark eyes, ordinary nose, dark complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 80 years of age, but appears to be much younger, gray hair; wore a tall hat, dark frieze coat, black trowsers, gray vest. WHEREAS it has been represented to the Lord Lieutenant, that, about the hour of 9.30 o'clock on the morning of Tuesday, the 2nd day of April, 1878 William Sydney, Earl of Leitrim, John W. Macker or Meekan, and Charles Buchanan, were brutally murdered at Cratlagh Wood, about three miles from Millford, in the county of Donegal, by some persons unknown: His Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this outrage, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE THOUSAND POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give auch information as shall THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, AUGUST 12, 1879. lead to the arrest of the persons who committed the lime, or any of them. And His Grace is also pleased to offer a FREE PARDON to any person concerned in or privy to the said murder, other than the persons who actually com- mitted the same, in case of his giving such information as will lead to the conviction of tide persons, or any of them, concerned in the murder aforesaid. Peel, Esq., the Resident Magistrate at Letterkenny, to those who may become entitled to it under the conditions of this Proclamation. DESCRIPTION of Charles Elliott, native of Drum- errin, who stands charged with having, on the morning of the 14th July, instant, in tlie barony of Boylagh, parish of Inniskeel, stolen nine sheep, viz.— four ewes, three wethers, one ram, and one lamb, the property of Patrick Dunleavy:— Wants two joints of third finger of i ight hand ; has a habit of twitching his ntouth to right side when speaking ; brown eyes, regular Dose, fresh complexion, round full face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 45 years of age, brown hair, turning gray, wears all his beard ; wore a soft black hat, dark frieze coat, dark trowsers, frieze vest Speaks with a coarse accent peculiar to returned Irish Americans, which he is one of; is a farmer. DESCRIPTION of a bullock, tbe property of James Beatty, which was stolen from the lands of Doon, parish of Enniskillen, barony of Tyrkennedy, on the night of Monday, 4th August, 1879, viz.:— Red and yellow bullock, with brownish head and muzzle, large tuft of hair on end of tail, mark of knife- cut in hair on right haunch, 1J years old; value for about £&. DESCRIPTION of James Mulhern ( mother's surname Keown), native of Drumoneillar, who stands charged with having, on the 31st July, 1879, at Rcscon, in the barony of Magheraboy, parish of Innishmacsaint, seriously assaulted Edward Reilly, so as to endanger his life :— Bald on top of head, left eye tender, blue circle tattooed on back of right hand, letters J. M. inside circle, blue eyes, regular nose, sandy complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 40 years of age, sandy hair,; wore a cap with peak, dark coat, trowscrs, and vest, generally wears strong laced boots; is a farmer and water bailiff; has been in America, Glasgow, and Liverpool; is a good boat- man— may seek employment at a seaport. DESCRIPTION of James Brown ( mother's surname Geany), native of Meenbannivane, who stands charged with having, on the 29th day of July, 1879, iu the barony of Trughenackmy, parish of Castleisland, committed a rape:— recent cut ( supposed on left hand) from reaping hook, dark eyes, thick nose, sallow com- plexion, broad face, stout smooth make, 6 feet 6| inches high, about 21 years of age, dark brown hair"; wore a dark soft hat, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; left sleeve of coat torn at the elbow, lined inside with light- coloured tweed about shoulders; wants a button on back of coat; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of James Mulhall, native of Uskerty, mother's surname Kenny, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 4th August, 1879, in in the barony of Fassadineen, parish of Dysart, stolen and offered for sale at Castledermot fair, eleven bullocks, the property of Thomas White, of Knocknadogue ( cattle recovered) :— Large feet, slightly round shoulders, high cheek bones, sunken jaws, slight curl in upper lip. opening between teeth, supposed to shave, lost a joint of one finger; blue eyes, ordinary nose, pale complexion, thin fac^, slight make, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, about 20 years of age, light brown hair; wore a black broad leafed jerry hat, blue frieze sack- make coat, dark tweed trowsers with narrow white stripe, and dark tweed vest: is a farmer's son. DESCRIPTION of Margaret Connell, native of Dublin or Balbriggan, who stands charged with having, during the month of July, 1879, in the bsrony ot Kilcoursey, parish of Kilbride, stolen and pawned a quantity of wearing apparel; the propetty of her em ployer:— Smart walk, teeth project when mouth opens, dark eyebrows which meet, dark gray eyes, regular nose, florid complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet high, about 20 years of age, dark brown I plaited hair; wore a coarse straw hat, black and white striped cotton dress, elastic boots; earrings and locket; j is a domestic servant. P., were maliciously and wilfully sot on fire and totally destroyed: His Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this outrage, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the arrest of the person or persons who committed the same. Has a good knowledge of the stone- cutting trade.
