DUBLIN, FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 1879. ENGLISH POLICE. £ 5 REWARD. ESCAPED from Her Majesty's Gaol, at Preston, Lan- cashire, at 5.45 p. m. on Monday, the 4th day of August 1879, Richard Pickering, who was under remand from Blackburn, on several charges of housebreaking ( together with William Lomax). Description :— Age 34 years, height 5 feet 5^ inches, round face, and sun- burned but otherwise fair com- plexion, light hair, sandy moustache, but may shave; no whiskers, but may allow the same to grow; propor- tionate make; has 4th and oth fingers on left hand amputated at first joint; has two anchors tattooed on left fore- arm ; star on back of left hand ; blue dot in centre of forehead; two blue dots on back of right hand ; dressed in dirty dark shooting coat, dark double- breasted vest, dark tweed trowsers, dark blue cloth cap with cloth peak, and braid round cap and peak ; woollen scarf, colour, black and white checked, and elastic- side boots. He is most notorious as a burglar, and for breaking into dwelling- houses and churches ; has been eight times convioted of housebreaking sacrilege, and other felonies, and has had 5 years and 7 years penal servitude. He is likely to commit other similar robberies. His practice lias been to leave the neighbourhood of such robberies, and to dispose of the property at a great distance. He has served 12 months in the merchant service, and will be likely to seek similar employment to avoid arrest. PARTICULARS relative to Police Supervisee Mary Purcell, convicted » t Carlow, county Carlow, on 24 th June, 1878, for stealing a chemise, and sentenced to 12 calendar months hard labour a'. d ( at termination thereof) 3 years police supervision :— 10 years of age on conviction, married, a labourer, born in Castle- comer ; fair hair, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, long visage, slight make, 5 feet 3| inches high. The above- named prisoner was released from Mountjoy Female Prison, on the 23rd ultimo, and took her discharge for Kilkenny, but she has not reported herself to the Constabulary there, and her present whereabouts is unknown. WHEREAS it has been represented to the Lord Lieutenant, that on the night of 20th June, 1879; an old man named Thomas Devonport, who resided in the townland of Ballaghaline, in the parish of Killilagh, and county of Gare, was strangled in his bed by some person or persons unknown. His Grace, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the perpetrators of this Murder is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such infor- mation as shall lead to the arrest of the person or persons who committed the same. By His Grace's Command, T. H. BURKE. The above reward will be paid, on conviction, by T. Butler, Esq., the Resident Magistrate at Kilkee, to those who may become entitled to it under the conditions of this Proclamation. Cork. DESCRIPTION of JOhn Barrett, native of Coom ( Midleton), who stands charged, on sus icion, with having, on the 3rid day of August, 1879, in the barony of Barrymore, parish of Dunbollogue, wilfully set fire to his dwelling- house:— Stoops when walking, has a tremulous motion in right hand, shaves all his face, wild dark ejes, ordinary nose, dark complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 80 years of age, but appears to be much younger, gray hair; wore a tall bat, dark frieze coat, black trowsers, gray vest. WHBBEAB it has been represented to the Lord Lieutenant, that, about the hour of 9.30 o'clock on the morning of Tuesday, the 3nd day of April, 1878 William Sydney, Earl of Leitrim, John W Macken or Meekan, and Charles Buchanan, were brutally murdered at Cratlagh Wood, about three miles from Millford, in the county of Donegal, by some persons unknown: His Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this outrage, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE THOUSAND POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the arrest of the persons who committed the same, or any of them. And His Grace is also pleased to offer • FREE PARDON to any person concerned in or privy to the said murder, other than the persons who actually com- mitted die same, in case of his giving such information as wiU lead to the conviction of the persons, or any of them, concerned in the murder aforesaid. Dublin, abandoned her male child, aged about 12 months :— Blue eyes, regular nose, fresh and fiir com- plexion, broad freckled face, stout make, 5 feet high, about 22 years of age, light brown hair ; wore an old plaid dress, old gray striped shawl, oil white straw hat, apd strong boots, much worn;, trade or occupa- tion, knitting stockings. DESCRIPTION of James Mulhern ( mother's surname Keown), native of Drumoneillar, who stands charged with having. on the 3 i st July, 1* 79, at Roscon, in the barony of Magheraboy. parish of Innishmacsaint, seriously assaulted Edward Reilly, so as to endanger his life:— Bald on top of head, left eye tender, blue circle tattooed on back of light hand loiters J. M. inside circle, blue eyes, regular nose, sandy complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 40 years of age, sandy hair; wore a cap with peak, dark coat, trowsers, and vest, generally wears strong laced boots; is a farmer and water bailiff; has been in America, Glasgow, and Liverpool; is a good boat- man— may seek employment at a seaport. B. Martley, esq, J. P., were maliciously and wilfully set on fire and totally destroyed: His Grace, for the better apprehending and bring- ing to justice the perpetrators of this outrage, is pleased hereby to offer a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the arrest of the person or persons who committed the same. DESCRIPTION of John Madden, native p'ace un- known, who stands charged with having, on the 31st July, 1879, at Ballinlough, in the barony of ratoath, parish of Dunshaughlin, stolen from ' he Dunshaugh- lin Union Workhouse, a chimney- cleaning machine, value for £ i 10 « ., the property of the Guardians of said Union :— teeth broken and i'regular in front of mouth, has one tooth larger than the others in his up- per jaw, large month, weak knees which bend forward when walking, dark eyes, regular nose, sallow com- plexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches higb, about 27 years of age, dark hair; wore a black jerry hat, light tweed coat, light tweed trowsers with dark stripe down outside seam, light tweed vest; is a chimney sweep. The machine is nearly new, the handle is 60 feet long, divided into 20 lengths of 3 feet each, with brass screws and brass fittings, and a small wheel on the head. Dunshaughlin, August 2, 1879. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender, who, on the 5th Augu> t, 1879. absconded from the St. Kevin's Reformatory School at Glencree, county Wicklow:— Thomas Murphy, 1412, about 19 or 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches or 6 feet 7 inches high, stout make, sallow complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, long and regular nose, ordinary mouth, long visage; small mark of cut on forehead ; formerly belonged to J 6, Upper Gloucester place, D lb'in, where his parents reside. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp, con- sists of:— Corduroy trowsers, vest, and jacket, cloth ran, s rong boots. Supposed to have an old jerry hat and other old clothes with the above. Has a good knowledge of the stone- cutting trade. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. ( 16898 m.— 28301.)
