Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that in information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. AM no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. William Ashford, at • Uckfield Fair, on 14th instant : a patent silver lever Watch, No. 14070, engraved on the case ' 140770,' makers, name B. Wright and Co. Supposed by a prostitute from Tunbridge Wells, from 25 to 30 years of age, pale com- plexion, short and stout, dark brown hair ; dressed in a black Jsilk jacket, black silk dress, and black hat; attends fairs, clubs, & c., with a man selling baked potatoes, whelks, & e. Information to Mr. Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, May 28. Stolen from the person at Hall Green Races, on 13th instant : a silver Geneva hunting Watch, No. 6G921. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Simmons, Solihull, or to Inspector Prosser, Acocks Green, Warwickshire..— Bon- street, May 26. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen on 21st instant, by means of housebreaking: £ 155 consisting of, 10 Ten Pound and 11 Five Pound Bank of England Notes, numbers not known ; a dark grey tweed shooting Coat, about half worn, pocket outside of each lap and 1 inside of left breast, black lining, with patch inside one of the laps ; and an old Verge Watch No. 721, makers names J. & W. Blaylock, Longtown ; has silver Albert Chain with key and Seai attached, stone out of seal, and keeper lost from end of guard : a man was seen in the neighbourhood and is suspected, a tramp, unknown, 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, thin whiskers round face and on chin, ( supposed shaved about an inch below ears on each side of face), proportionate figure ; dressed in sleeved vest or round jacket, brown ( supposed to be moleskin) trousers, glazed down left side, and torn a few inches from bottom of outside of left leg ; a pair of light blue home- spun Stockings, man's size, with about 3 iuehes of white on the tops and toes, been darned at the heels, has ' J' or ' J. J.' marked in red yarn. A jacket was found in a clothes basket, under a bed, on 25th instant, supposed to belong to the person suspected : a grey and black plaid check tweed three seam Jacket, man's size, lined in back with brown winsey, sleeves lined with light grey, red and striped winsey, patched underneath both arms with dark tweed cloth, two pockets on right side, two on left outside with flaps, two pockets inside left breast and one inside of right, leather strap on top of each low inside pocket, and white button to fasten strap to, three of the outside pockets lined with red, brown, and white striped colour cotton, 4 black bone buttons down right side, bnttons been changed from left side to right, and sewed on over button holes. The Jacket has at one time been double- breasted. Found inside of pockets portion of a red, brown, yellow, green and white flowered Muffler, tailor's Thimble, piece of blue slate or rag stone for sharpening knives, thin piece of patent leather Strap, |- inch broad by 2 feet 6 inches long. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Stacksteads, Bacup, between 530 a. m. and 5' 30 p. m. on 23rd instant: a red leather spring- snapped Purse, with the inside cut out, containing half Sovereign, and 13s. in Silver ; also a co- operative store shop Book. Information to Mr. Superintendent Henderson, Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 28. Description of CHARLES SHARP, alias SCOTT, charged on warrant with housebreaking on 21st instant, at Shotly Bridge, Durham : he is 36 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, moustache and whiskers, and has a small speck on right eye ; dressed in grey coat and vest, moleskin trousers, and dark brown cap, all dirty, a labourer in ship- yards, is a native of Presten, Lancashire, aud lately resided at Consett, Durham. The property stolen ^ has been [ recovered. Information to Mr. Superintendent Oliver, Consett, Durham.— Bow- street, May 28. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Mr. C. H. Watson, Bishop Auckland, by means of burglary, on 24th instant : a square yellow gilt Timepiece, on black wood stand, with blue velvet cover and four feet, and a blue- coloured Vase on top ; two electro- plated flower Vases ; a glass biscuit Box, imitation of fern leaves on glass, and electro- plated top and handle ; electro- plated Inkstand, shape of an eagle with its wings spread out; two electro- plated Salvers, engraved on one, ' Presented to C. H. Watson, on the occasion of his marriage, by the Accident Insurance Co., May, 1877'; and a magnifying Glass with black handle. Two men were seen near the house at noon the previous day, and at 10 30 p. m. the night of the robbery, and are suspected of having committed the offence : one about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, and clean shaved ; dressed in longish dark grey frock coat, dark trousers, and soft felt billycock, flat at the top ; the other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair, an small moustache ; dressed in dark brown long jacket cut away at front, with three buttons, dark grey trousers, large check, made wide at the bottom of leg, and narrow- brimmed billycock. Information to Mr. Superintehdent Banks, Bishop Auckland, Durham.— Bow- street, May 28. During the night of 23rd instant, the Tommy Shop of Samuel Groncutt and Sons, Bradley, near Bilston, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : 27 pairs of new Boots, 4 English Cheeses, a side of Bacon, 24 lb. of Tobacco, 12 lb. of Currants, 26 lb. of Tea, 76 yards of wool Shirting, some childrens ^ coloured Socks, 4 lb. of Sweets, a piece of red Twill, and a few white Handkerchiefs. Iniormation to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, May 26. Between 10 p. m. 23rd, and 7 a. m. 24th instant, the residence of Mrs. Hawkshead Talbot, of Hartwood, Chorley, was broken and entered, and a silver Trowel stolen therein : the trowel was presented to Mrs. Talbot, on the laying of the foundation stone of a church at Southport some years ago, and bears an inscription to that effect. Between 9 p . m. on 17th and 7 a. m. on 19th instant, the Booking Office at Quainton Railway Station, on the Bucking- ham and Aylesbury Line, was entered and stolen therein : a plain gold Ring ; a gold Eting, with blue stones ; a plain band Bracelet, with an Egyptian head ; a pair of Scissors ; a silver Thimble ; a button Hook aud Stilletto, with white handles ; two cotton Shirts— one plaid, the other white ; and a Pillow- case. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Captain Dawson, at Fulwood, by means of burglary, on 22nd instant : a morocco Case, containing a pair of plated fish Carvers, with twisted mother o' pearl handles, witli crest— head of a cat with a mouse on a tower ; two pairs tf carving Knives and Forks, makers Mappin Brothers; a carving Knife, same makers ; four large Knives, makers Wigfall and Co.; five ditto, makers Mappin Brothers ; six small ditto, same makers ; six small ditto, makers Hunter and Sons, Sheffield ; an ormolu paper Knife, all with white handles; a grey cloth Coat, black velvet collar, marked ' Captain F. Stolen by means of burglary on 21st instant, from Kingsfold Warnham : a dark grey Overcoat, velvet collar, pockets at the sides, and one inside breast pocket, and dark bone buttons ; a small fancy enamelled Box, lined with gold ; two children's gold Thimbles, marked ' E. G.' and ' C. G.'; about £ 8 in Gold ; and some Silver. Supposed by two men, one about 48 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair turning grey, beard and whiskers cut short, fall round face ; the other about 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and beard, long moustache ; both dressed in dark clothes, and hard felt round black bats. Information to Mr. Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, May 23. HORSE AMD CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on 23rd instant, from 36, South Street: a bay gelding Pony, 12 i hands high, blind of right eye, white marks on off hind leg ; a silver plated Harness ; a small Dog Cart ( painted plum colour with yellow lines), blue Cushions, Rug, and Whip, Supposed by a man 19 years of age, short, fair, no whiskers, and cross left eye ; dressed in blue jacket and vest, light trousers, muller hat, side- spring boots, speckled tie, silver horseshoe pin, and can be identified.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, May [ 28. Stolen about 11th instant, from Delvarch : 3 Ewes, ear mark, point cut off, notch in both sides, pitch mark ' D. H.' redded along back ; and 3 Lambs, same pitch mark. Sup- posed driven off by drovers going from Llanidloes fair on 11th instant in the direction of Brecon or South Wales. Between 9 p. m. 25th and 5' 30 a. m. 26th instant, a, Wether Teg Sheep, was slaughtered in a cart shed at the Hopwas farm, Hopwas, and the carcass carried away, the property of the Right Honorable Sir Robert Peel, Bart. M. P. Information to Inspector McCrea, Police Station, Tamworth.— Bow- street, May 28. Stolen from a field at Colwall, Herefordshire, between 19th and 21st instant: six white- faced ewe Sheep, not shorne, the property of Mr. G. H. Sheppherd, Colwall. Information to Mr. Superintendent Blunsdon, Ledbury, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, Mai/ 26. Stolen from the stable of Thomas Gilliet, Esq., of Dowthorpe Hall, East Riding of Yorkshire, during the night of 23rd instant : a brown Horse, aged, about 15 hands 2 or 3 inches high, half bred, off hind fetlock white, the sides of the horse are very much chaffed from the effects of the cart shafts. £ 3 reward will be given for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the horse. Informotion to Mr. Superintendent Gibson, Sproutly, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, iiay 26. Stolen on the night of 19 th instant, from a field at the Sale Farm, Buttington ; the property of Mr. John Roberts : a two- year old Heifer, in calf ( recovered), having been sold in Shrewsbury Smithfield, on the morning of 20th, by a man from 22 to 25 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, rather sallow complexion, dark hair and whiskers, aud a moustache of about a month's growth ; supposed to have lost an upper front tooth ; dressed in a suit of dark clothes, small round- top hat, elastic- side boots, and wore a long blue cloth overcoat. Information to P. C. Thomas, Buttingtou, or to Mr. Superin, tendent Ellis, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire. — Bow- street- May 26. Charged with Horse stealing : JOHN HAWKES, a carman, 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, complexion swarthy, hair and eyes dark ; dress, dark coat, light vest and trousers, felt hat, a known horse thief and likely to be found at fairs. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, B Division May 26. Charged with obtaining two Horses by false pretences : JAMES SAWYER, alias FARMER RINGWOOD, 50 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, grey hair, flat mouth. JACK THE TAILOR, 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair. Both horse copers, and frequent fairs and markets. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, May 26. Further particulars respecting the bay cob Horse stolen and advertised in Police Gazette of 21st instant: On 16th instant, about 12 midnight, a Horse and Hansom Cab, No. 8514, were stolen from the corner of Denman- street and Sherwood- street, Golden- square, the Cab being left about two hours afterwards at Islington without the Horse. The Horse, a bay gelding, is good- looking, 6 years old, about 14 hands 2 inches high, white star on forehead, about 6 inches of white on near hind leg, has been clipped,. trace high, but now nearly grown out. A reward of £ 10 will'be paid by Thomas Simmonds, 5, Colville Mews, Bayswater,/ or such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, May 23. Stolen from a field at Aston Hall, Claverley, on 7th inst. : 4 Lambs, about 9 weeks old, long tails, Shropshire breed, supposed marked ' W.', the property of Mr. John Wilson, Aston Hall, Claverley, Bridgnorth. Information to Mr. Superintendent Christie, or to Sergeant Leader, Bridgnorth, Salop.— Bow- street, May 23. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on 24th instant, stealing £ 21 in Gold : potman, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion and moustache ; dressed iu light coat, and dark trousers.— — Metropolitan Police, E Division, May 28. Description of JOSHUA FAIREY, a tramping watch- maker, charged on a warrant with larceny as the bailee of a gold Watch and a gold Ring: he is about 55 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, very stout, dark hair and whiskers, turning grey ; dressed in low black bat, and dark clothes. He may be found travelling with one of Burrows' vans. In- formation to Mr. Superintendent Sargent, High Wycombe, or to Inspector Breene, Great Marlow, Bucks.— Bow- street, May 28. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement: GEORGE LARCOMBE, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, upwright stature, dark hair, small dark moustache, fresh complexion ; dressed in speckled trousers, brown coat, long dark overcoat, and round bowler hat. Was seen near the Crown tavern, Pancras- road, Kings- cross, London, on 24th instant. Information to Mr. Superintendent Jeffs, North Petherton, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, May 28. Absconded from Wednesbury, Staffordshire, on 22nd instant, charged with embezzling Monies, the property of Wm. Watson, cab proprietor, Wednesbury : HENRY CLARKE, alias EDWARDS, a cabman, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, at times flushed as from drink, grey eyes, rather stoutish build, has a peculiar look about eyes, and supposed a native of Cardiff; was dressed in dark brown plaid suit, and hard felt hat. He will most likely seek a situation where he could be employed amongst horses. Information to Mr. Superintendent Holland, Police Office, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 28. Stolen from the ' New Inn,' Goodshaw, Higher Booths, Bacup, between 12 p. m. aud 6 a m. on 25th instant : a pair of low lace- up Shoes, with three holes and braid ties; and a soft billycock Hat with brown liuing. Supposed by a man who had stayed in the house on that night, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair ; dressed in grey sleeved waistcoat, grey cloth trousers, and will be wearing the stolen boots and hat, as he left his own behind him ; he is a labourer. 1 nformation to Mr. Superin- tendent Henderson, Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 2b. Absconded on 23rd instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : WILLIAM CUSELL, late of 33, Leipsic- road, Camberwell, 53 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and beard, turning grey ; dressed in dark cutaway coat, and high hat. Information to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, May 28. Absconded on 22nd instant stealing a lady's gold Watch, No. 50502, fancy gold Chain attached, 5 Rings, 1 large ( 3 small diamonds round it) 1 pearl and diamond, 1 double diamond ( one deficient), 1 diamond ( colour changed), 1 plain gold, 1 diamond Earring : a footman, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, complexion and hair ( curly) dark ; dressed, tweed jacket, black trousers, billycock hat, likely to emigrate.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, May 28. Absconded, charged with stealing £ 9 4s. from a dwelling house at Handsworth, on 26th instant: a young man, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, stout build, light complexion, light brown hair, full face, lost all toes of right foot and some of left. Supposed to be in company of a young man about 20 years of age. He is known at 1, Milliner's- yard, French- gate, Doncaster, and at Keighley Workhouse. Information to Mr. Superintendent Woollaston, West Bromwich, or to Inspector Whitehurst, Handsworth, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, May 28. D scription of THOMAS LAKIN, clerk, who absconded ' rom Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham, on 21st instant, charged with embezzling the sum of £ 65 0s. 10d., the Monies of his employer : he is 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, light complexion, fair hair, slight moustache and whiskers, which may be shaved off; dressed in brown mixture suit, reefer jacket, and black billycock hat. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Gallaway, Police Station, Aston, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Description of GEORGE EAGLETON, alias G. H. BIRD, charged with stealing a blank Cheque. Warrant issued. He is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, dark eyes and hair, whiskers and moustache turning grey, chin shaved, hair parted in centre, prominent nose, very small ears, and small white hands; generally dressed in black cloth suit, black cloth overcoat, or grey mix- ture suit, grey ulster, and violet- coloured necktie. Informa tion to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Absconded on 15th instant, charged with stealing four Sheets, four Blankets, and a Coverlet, which have been recovered, from a Seamen's Mission Room at Devonport, and for whose apprehension a warrant is granted : FREDERICK VIVYAN, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black hair, whiskers and moustache, and shaves under the chin ; dressed in blue serge coat, and black hard hat; has been at sea as an officer's servant, and is likely to endeavour to obtain a similar situation. Information to Head Constable Lynn, Devonport, Devonshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Absconded from Stourbridge, charged with stealing £ 3 6s. on lltli instant: W. J. CHAMBERLAIN, an hotel clerk, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, and small dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed in light grey cloth suit of clothes, and black round billycock hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Wheeler, Police Office, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, May 26. Stolen between 8 p. m. on 16th instant and 6 a. m. on 17th instant, from the schooner ' Princess' lying in the River Dee, at Connah's Quay, Flintshire : a round blue cloth Jacket with velvet collar, covered buttons, lined with blue and black plaid, sleeves lined with dark calico or stuff, bound round with black braid, pockets on hips, one inside breast pocket, marked inside of one sleeve ' W. Davison'; a round Jacket, brown striped Scotch plaid, pockets on hips, two small ditto above, lined with dark alpaca or stuff; a blue pilot cloth monkey Jacket, velvet collar, torn on right shoulder, body lined with imitation sealskin and mended inside of one sleeve ; 3 Blankets— one large size and two smaller ones, one mended where it had been burnt; a blue and white Quilt, mended with a piece of grey stuff about a foot square ; a pair of new Braces; the property of Wm. Davison. Also at the same time and place a pair of sea Boots, nearly new, one heel giving way a little ; an oilskin Jacket and Trousers, can be identified ; the property of John Jones, mate. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Adams, Mold, Flintshire, or to Sergeant Lockwood, Hawarden.— Bow- st., May 26. Stolen on 17th instant, lb. of Beef Steak, from the pocket of a cflat, near the premises of Mr. Nunn, Bassing- bourn. Supposed by a tramp about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, has lost his forefinger off right hand ; dressed in common cord trousers. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dade, Arrington, Cambridge. — Bow street, May 26. Stolen between 6 and 7 a. m. on 22nd instant, from No. 13, Lawn- roaJ, Northfleet, Kent, a black cloth Coat with velvet collar, and a black fustian Vest.
