Stolen from the person in the borough of Preston, on the night of 18th instant : a silver Watch, I" . 4554, London make, engine- turned cases, white dial, and gold hands. In- formation to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston.— Bow- street, December 2J. Absconded from Stone, charged with assaulting and robbing Mr. John Holmes, on 6th instant: JOSEPH TALBOT, 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, pale looking, dark brown hair, medium build, holds his head down, has lost first joint of litde finger, supposed left hand ; dressed in blue pilot coat, old grey cloth trousers, and black hard felt hat. Five guineas reward will be paid for such information as will lead to his apprehension and conviction. Information to Mr. Superintendent Crisp, Stone, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 18. BURGLARY AID HOUSE BREAKIIG. During the night of 12th or morning of 13th instant, a warehouse in Sheffield, was feloniously entered, and stolen therein : three childrens' electro- plated 4 pint Cans, ' Edith' engraved on one ; an electro plated 4- gill Teapot, marked ' U. 54' on bottom; and a quantity of German silver and plated Goods, & c. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 16. HORSE AID CATTLE STEALING. Found in field at Yardley, about 20th ultimo : a dark brown Mare, half bred, about 16 hands high, hind feet white, a » ed and in good condition. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Simmons, Colesliill, or to Inspector Prosser, Acoek's Green, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, December 20. Description of Pony and Cart left in Warwick- street, Borough- road, on 3rd instant, . not owned ( supposed stolen) : brown horse Pony, 11 hands high, hog mane, recently clipped, in good condition; silver- plated Harness ; light spring Cart, painted black, wheels and shafts red, picked out with black, felloe in off wheel, spring and step broken, containing a black Bug, lined, red tiger thereon.— Metropolitan Police, M Division, December 20. Stolen from a stable at Bedish, Saint Paul's, Walden, on the night of 12th instant : a light chestnut Russian horse Pony, 5 years old, about 12 hands, white face, off hind fet- lock white and cracked, fair condition, has been clipped about ten days, very shy about the head, and very sluggish. Also two old horse cloth Rollers, and a riding Bridle. Information to Inspector Reynolds, Stevenage, Hertfordshire.— Bow- street December 18. Description of MOSES ARMFIELD, a native of Stock- port, Cheshire, cattle drover, charged with stealing a Heifer, at Sheriff hales, on 23rd ultimo last, the property of his employer : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, sallow complexion, sandy hair ; dressed in a long overcoat, corduroy trousers, tweed cap, and was wearing a pair of clogs, and had in his possession a horse Bug ; was last seen on 24th ultimo, at Newport Railway Station, where he took train for Willington. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Forebridge, Stafford, or to Sergeant Dix, Police Station, Church Eaton, near Stafford, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, December 16. * Supposed stolen from the Bradford Colliery, Bentley, during the night of 7th instant: a dark brown entire Pony, about 12 hands high, has the letter ' D' on one hip, lump on rio- ht foxe knee, long tail, the property of Rowland Higgins, Park- hill, Walsall. Information to Inspector Gasson, Con- stabulary Office, Willenhall, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, December 13. LARCENY AID EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded, stealing £ 1 5s. : HENRY WATSON, 29, South- parade, Church- street, Chelsea, clerk, 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, light hah, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in black diagonal overcoat, dark cutaway coat and vest under, light tweed trousers, and high black hat. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, December 20. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement: JOSEPH S. SHARKEY, a doctors assistant, 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, florid complexion, sandy hair, prominent nose, whiskers on sides of face, shaves chin, wears glasses, scar on one cheek, scar under chin from an abscess ; dressed in black ribbed cloth ulster, hard billycock, grey tweed trousers, and low shoes. Has only been 6 months from Ireland, speaks very broad. Information to Mr. Superintendent Ormsby, West Riding Constabulary, Halifax, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, December 20. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Philip Saunders, of 5, Pedley- street, Crewe, about 4 p. m. on 18th instant : a blue witney Overcoat, two pockets outside skirt and one inside left breast, lined with grey waterproof tweed, loop on collar torn off, about half worn ; an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, dial chipped, brass hands. By a man who had been lodging in the house 3 nights, about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, black mous- tache, small dark imperial, no whiskers, and very full eyes ; dressed in a cloth cap, with straight peak and ear caps tied across the top. Supposed to be wearing the stolen coat, and to be well known in Congleton and the potteries. Stated he had travelled through Congleton, Newcastle, Tunstall, Burs- lem, and Hanley. Information to Captain Cope, Nantwich, or to Inspector Plant, Cheshire Constabulary, Crewe.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen about 3 p. m. on 11th instant, from a library at Sandringham House, Tunbridge Wells : four £ 5 Bank of England Notes from the following numbers— 28626,' 28627, 28628, 28629, 28630, 28631, and 28633. Supposed to be the first four numbered Notes ; and a Cheque Book on the London and County Bank, Connaught Street Bransh. By a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, inclined to be stout, and plenty of light whiskers ; dressed in knotty dark overcoat, dark trousers, low crowned round black felt hat with narrow brim. Information to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bow- street, December 18. At 6 p. m. on ICth instant, some person threw a brick through a pane of glass in the shop window of Mr. Charles Kowden, of Chipping Ongar, and abstracted a large double- case Watch, a Boston lever Watch, a silver double- case Watch, a Geneva hunter Watch, a metal Watch, and five silver verge Watches. Information to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Police Station, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- strcst, December 18. Stolen from Byfleet, Surrey, on 16th instant.: 3 silver Watches, one crystal Geneva, j- plate, gold balance, jewelled in eight holes, name on face ' R. H. Barton'; another consular Geneva, No. 40541, enamelled dial, ' Cartwright, Chertsey,' , on dome, jewelled in eight holes ; tlie other an open- face English lever, capped and jewelled ; and ,£ 15 in gold. A tramp is suspected, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, black whiskers ; dressed in old brown coat, and dark trousers. Information to Mr. Supei intendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen on 15th instant, from a child : a pair of children's high button. Boots, newly heeled and tipped. By a woman,- about 30 years of age, full red face ; dressed in black skii t, black hat, black cloth jacket, large buttons down front; wore a ring, and had the appearance of a tramp. Information to Head Constable Romanis, Town Hall, Margate, Kent.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen on 11th instant, from the dwelling- house of William Austin, at Groombridge, near Tunbridge Wells : a new dark plaid Coat, button holes unfinished ; a pair of new patent leather Leggings ; and a large grey tame Rabbit. By GEORGE MILES, alias MAYNARD, 21 or 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, long visage, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache, slight figure ; dressed in dark grey suit, hard black felt hat, and side- spring boots; a jobbing gardener by trade. Information to Mr. Superin- tendent Berry, East Grinstead, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 16. Absconded from Langrick, on 22nd ultimo, charged with stealing 2 bottles of Wine ( recovered) : GEO. DURRANT, alias SWEDEN, a blacksmith, 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, Itatof and whiskers, which are worn round the face ; dressed in dark pilot jacket, dark striped vest, cotton cord trousers, black billy hat, and strong lace- up boots. Usually assists blacksmiths, but occasionally goes with gravel and sand boats, he is addicted to drink, and will resort to low beer- houses. He is a native of Suffolk. Information to Mr. Superintendent Truelove, County Police Station, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 16. Absconded on 11th instant, from West India Dock Road, Limehouse, embezzling « £ 4C : EDWARD RICHARD BROWNING, secretary to the East London Co- operative Society, 31 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion hair - whiskers and moustache, slim build, dressed dark wicney overcoat, velvet collar, black cloth trousers, side spring boots, hard felt hat; his father resides at High- street, Leyton, and he is likely to be accompanied by his wife and three children.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, December 16. Description of a man charged with stealing 5 Ducks and 2 Fowls, recovered, at Chatham, on 30th ultimo, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, thin face, very red round his eyes, brown hair and moustache, and no whiskers ; dressed in very old dirty grey coat, dark trousers, black billy- cock hat, and black and white necktie. Said he had been a soldier, and had the appearance of having been one. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, December 16. Stolen on 14th instant, from a dwelling- house at Rottfnt^ dean, Sussex, by a man who had been lodging at the house, ' K and working in the gasworks for a short time, had been '••-• discharged from the 107th Regiment last August, at Newport, he now belongs to the Army Reserve; a grey ulster Ceat, four pockets outside, the left one torn ; a pair of side- spring Boots, man's size, lining of left one torn out; a light Wrap for neck f a red cotton Handkerchief ; a small leather hand Bag, containing a pedlars certificate, name Arthur Chambers, issued at Newport, Isle of Wight, last August, endorsed at Winchester for Hants, also Chambers discharge from the 107th Regiment last August. He is 24 years of age, 5 feet 8£ inches high, red hair, slight moustache, is a stoker ; supposed dressed in the stolen coat and boots, dark plaid trousers, dark ribbed jacket, hard felt hat, is a native pf Leeds. Information to Mr. Superintendent Baldwin, PatcMm, near Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, December 16. Description of a groom, charged with stealing wearing apparel, at Hednesford, on 10th instant, from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 ffetst 3 or 4 - inches high, fresh complexion, •. Vpjrk hair, black whiskers turning grey, no moustache, dark eyes, and. slender build ; dressed in a hard black billycock hat, dark grey cloth suit, white muffler with black spots, and a pin in necktie, - which was worn under muffler : description of pre- perty— a pilot Overcoat, velvet collar, pockets on hips, one inside breast, double row of cloth buttons, one large black bone button, second from top left side, and lined with black glaze ; a pair of low Shoes, laced in front, light made, and right heel out of repair. On 9th instant he took lodgings at a private house at Hednesford, stated he had got a situation as stableman, and on the morning of 10th he absconded. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hills, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Brooks, Hednesford, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, December 13. Stolen between 10 a. m. and 1 p. m., on 11th instant, from a bed- room at the Ship Inn, Gabriel's Hill, Maidstone : a lady's Geneva gold Watch, No. 70285, a gold small link Chain attached; a gold Ring with diamond and two rubies ; a gold Ring, blue stone in centre and six pearls ; a plain gold. Locket with gentleman's Photograph, plated Chain attached ; and a pair of plain gold Ear- rings ; the property of Hannah Passell. Supposed by a man about 30 years of age, brown hair, little whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark grey Ulster coat; and attempted larcenies at other hotels on that day. Information to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- street, December 13. Description of a woman charged with stealing a Coat recovered, from a house at Cambridge, where she called to purchase wearing apparel, presenting a card bearing Mr. and Mrs. Flynn, Post Office, Colchester, upon it: she is about 27 years of age, about 5 feet high, very dark hair, done up in a knot behind, and dark complexion ; dressed in dark skirt, with a slate coloured tunic, black jacket, black hat, brown gloves, may be wearing an ulster, and is of respectable appearance. She travels with a mau who hawks cloth. In- formation to Mr. W. G. Turrall, Chief of Police, Cambridge. — Bow- street, December 13. FRAUBS AND AGGRAVATED MISDSMEA NOSJRS. Description of a girl, charged with obtaining Goods by false pretences from a confectioner's shop in St. Alban's, on 14th instant : 15 years of age, rather short, full face, sallow complexion, and light brown hair; . dressed in a blue and white striped dress, black and green plaid shawl, black straw hat, with black feather, and two black rosettes, and can be identified. Information to the Head Constable, St. Albans, Hertfordshire.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen from Bacup, between 12 and 2 p. m. on 4th inst. : a white Pomeranian Dog, black eyes and nose, long hair, tail curls over on to back, answers to the name of ' Prince.' Anyone bringing the same to the Police Station, Bacup, will be handsomely rewarded, and if detained after- this notice will be prosecuted. Information to Mr. Superintendent Henderson, County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 16. , Description of a woman, charged on warrant with obtaining 15s. by a false pretence, from a lady at Cnckfield, on 4th instant: she gave the name of GILL, Rose Cottage, Alton, Hants, which is false, about 45 years of age, rather tall, fresh complexion, has a long straight nose, and some of 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. November 15 her front teeth are out, stout; dressed in brown winsey, scolloped round the edge, and dark blue waterproof ; she calls at gentlemen's houses, and applies for a situation as cook, and carries a small bag. Information at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Mr. Superintendent Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, December 1< 3. Charged on a warrant with obtaining money by false pretences at Tugby, Leicester, on 28th ultimo : WILLIAM WRIGHT, an itinerant photographer, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, stout build, dark eyes and com plexion, round features, brown hair, rather thick, parted in centre and rather curly on each side, long moustache, whiskers shaved off, ship tattooed on back of right hand, and anchor on back of left hand ; dressed in rough dark overcoat, dark under- coat, vest and trousers, amber and black tie, and hard felt hat. MARTHA WRIGHT, about 38 years of age, 5 feet high, very stout, dark eyes, fair complexion, brown hair, brushed back from forehead ; dressed in blue and black skirt, black polinaise, black cloth jacket, tight fitting, trimmed with brown fur, and black crape bonnet. Both are very fond of drink. Carried with them an oak coloured box and two sets of tripods, one set about 5 feet long having new legs, unpainted, the other set about 3 feet long. In the habit of calling on clergymen and schoolmasters in villages. Informa- tion to Inspector Holloway, Constabulary Station, East Nor- ton, Leicester, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, December 13. Absconded, charged on a warrant with fraud : DAVID DUNCAN, waterman, late of 70, Lower Thames- street, and 11, Alexandra- road, Finsbury- park, 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark eyes and moustache, no beard or whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes. Information to Inspector McWiliiam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, December 13. Absconded from Middlesborough, charged with obtaining £ 2 2s. by false pretences on 10th instant: a man who goes about with a petition in favour of the Public Prosecutors Bill, and a letter representing if to be from ' Sir J. Eardley Wilmot, Bart., M. P.', which is false. After receiving the money, lie gives a receipt, signed ' pro J. Mears, collector W. Birly, Ludgate Hill, Londou.' He is about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, proportionate figure, brown hair, thin whiskers and moustache, rather ginger, long thin face, and sharp nose ; dressed in a long brown overcoat, and billycock hat. He has been at several places in the North of England. Middlesborough, and Stockton- on- Tees. Information to Chief Constable Sagger- son, Middlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 13. Absconded, charged on a warrant with fraud : THOS. LAUDER, 29 years of age, 6 feet high, very slight build, pale complexion, thin features, very prominent nose, light brown beard on face and under chin ; dressed in grey tweed suit, round black hat, blue and red striped scarf ; speaks with a Scotch accent, was in prison at Ayr, Scotland, for fraud last spring, also at Dundee, from which place he was recently discharged. Information to the Inspector on duty, Seething- lane Police Station, City, London.— Bow- street, December 13. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of a man who gives the name of JOSEPH CRAWFORD, and states he is a native of Brixton, Surrey, and is by trade a striker, remauded, charged with larceny at Chatteris : about 36 years of age, 5 feet 7f inches high, very dark hair, whiskers and moustache of recent growth, sallow complexion, dark hazel eyes, large scar on left shin, scar on right breast, scar back of left hand, small scar on knuckle of lst finger same hand, high forehead, and hair brushed up ; dressed in old black ribbed cloth frock coat, two old vests, one dark ground with red flowers, and one dark ribbed cloth, over the other, old dirty fustian trousers, out at the heels, and clogs, high crown black chummy. Found in his possession a pawn ticket for a coat, pledged at Rochdale, 8th October, 1878, for 10s. Information to Inspector Mitchell, Chatteris, Cam- bridgeshire.— Bow- street, December 20. Found in a timber- yard in Tynemouth, on 16th instant' a newly- born male Child, naked. An inquest has been held> and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' returned, against some person or persons unknown. Information to thief Constable Anderson, Tynemouth.— Bow- street, December 20. Description of THOMAS ROBINSON, 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, small scar on forehead, short moustache, no whiskers; dressed in hard billycock hat, and grey suit, a baker by trade, and was employed a-< such in Sittingbourne co- opperative stores up to 11 a. m. 17th instant, he then left and has not since been heard of. 11 is feared some ill has befallen him. Information to Mr. Superintendent Mayne, Police Court, Sittingbourne, Keut.— Bow- street, December 20. Description of WILLIAM CORNICE, alias BAILEY, alias CORNALL, a native of Seaton, Devon, committed for trial at the next quarter sessions at Dorchester, on a charge of horsestealing : 21 years of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, small moles on shoulders and chest, anchor on right arm, imperfect anchor on left arm, two cuts on left hand : dressed in dark clothes. Supposed to have committed offences elsewheie. Has been a porter on the Salisbury Branch of the Loudon and South Western Railway at Norwood Junctioi . He purchased a new suit of clothes with the proceeds of the stolen Horse at Bristol, but before he was rather shabbily dressed. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Dorset Constabulary, Wimbourne. -— Bow- St., December 20. Description of JOHN TOWERS the elder, and JOHN TOWERS the younger, father and son, committed for trial at the next Kuutstorci - Sessions, oil two charges of larceny from dwelling- houses : the father is 52 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black hair and beard, dark complexion, has lost fore part of left arm, is a native of Ireland, and is a pedlar, and is generally accompanied by his son, who is 14 years of age, dark saudy hair, fresh complexion, freckled face. Information to the Chief Constable, Stalybridge, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 18. Committed for trial at the next assizes, charge:-! with highway rubbery with violence : WILLIAM WILLIAMS, a boilersmith, 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 niches high, long black hair inclined to cur'-, blue eyes, dark sallow complexion, large blue scar bridge of nose downwards, large scar on right thumb. States that he is a native of Monmouth Town, and has been working and tramping over the greatest part of England and Wales. And KATE, his wife, ;, 8 years of age, 5 feet 1J inches high, light hair turning g ey, blue eyes, sallow complexion, scar left side of forehead wh ch is rather high, and of bald appearance ; native of Fenchurch- s'reet, London. Informa- tion to Mr. Superintendent Thomas, Constabulary Office, Bridgend, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, December 18. Missing from his home since 7' 30 p. m. on 14th instant : ALBERT HOLLANDS, of Rye, a butcher, 68 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or' 8 inches high, grey hair and whiskers, bald on top of head; dressed in blue serge jacket, dark plaid trousers and vest, hard felt hat, dark striped woollen shirt, black necktie, unbleached stockings, and balmoral boots. It is feared some ill has befallen him. Information to Head Constable Bourne, Borough Police, Rye, Sussex.— Bow- street, December 18. Missing from his home, at Burslem, Staffordshire, since 20th ultimo : THOMAS HARRIS, 19 years of age, 5 ft. 4 inches high, brown hair, dark complexion and eyes ; dressed in a brown cloth cap with peak, old black pilot jacket, light striped vest, light plaid trousers, patched on knee, check cotton shirt, coloured scarf, and strong watertight boots, newly soled and heeled. Information to Mr. Superintendent Longden, Constabulary Station, Burslem, Staffordshire. Bow- street, December 16. Remanded until 19th instant, changed with stealing from the person of Henry Smith, whilst asleep in a public house : JOHN BURTON, a bricklayer, but has been in the Army, S7 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, oval face, dark com- plexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, medium build, blue ring on 3rd right inger, female figure on right nipple, left hip injured causing a lameness, lar^ e red scar on right cheek, and con- traction near right ear.
