C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Nanw^ is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Ai no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, alt Letters addressed to the Editor most toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptioas of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About midnight on 12th ultimo, one of certain men poaching on lands in the neighbourhood of Burton Agnes, Yorks, fired at a gamekeeper in the employ of Sir Henry S. Boynton, Bart., thereby doiDg him grievous bodily harm. £ 2,5 reward will be paid to any person ( other than the party • who actually fired the shot), who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender. Information to Mr. Superintendent Winterbottom, Police Station, Bridlington, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, November 6. Description of HUGH CAREY, charged on a warrant • with threatening to shoot John Pickavance, and also on suspicion of having murdered Police Sergeant Sewell, on 1st instant, by shooting him with a revolver : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, of rather stout build ; dressed in dark cloth coat, cord trousers, cap with peak and flaps, made to tie on the top; it is supposed that his mother resides in Drogheda. Information to Mr. Superintendent Ludlam, Saint Helens, Lancashire.— Bow- street, November 6. Description of EDWARD MAGUIRE, an Irish labourer committed for trial at the next Stafford Assizes, on 5th instant, for unlawfully wounding : 58 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, turning grey, small • whiskers on upper part of face, shaves round face, swarthy complexion, going bald on top of head, very thick hands, and bruises on back ; dressed in faded black cloth coat, dark brown vest very old, fastens with two brace buttons, striped baragan trousers, and navvy boots. He says he has beeD 33 years in America and left about 12 months ago, and has worked in - the Isle of Man, and at Liverpool as a sawyer's labourer. Information to Sergeant Hammond, Police Station, Shenstone, near Lichfield, Staffordshire?^ Bow- street, November 1. PORGERY. Obtained by means of a forged cheque, from Gurney and Co., Aylsham, on 31st ultimo : J120. By a man who o- ave the name of JAMES HARDY, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown beard the bottom of which is inclined to be sandy ; dressed in dark • overcoat, and black soft hat; driving a dark ( supposed brown) pony and trap, painted in imitation of cane. Accompanied by a girl, about 9 years of age, and a boy about 7 years of age. The man, pony, trap, and children were traced to Norwich on the same day, and left Norwich on the following day by train. Information to Mr. Superintendent Chambers, Aylsham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, November 8. Absconded on 2nd instant, from Donington- le- Heath, near Ashby- de- la- Zouch, charged on warrant with forging and uttering a Bill of Exchange for .£ 300 on the Leicestershire Banking Company's Branch, at Ashby- de- la- Zouch: JOHN NEAL late of Donington- le- Heath, a builder, 42 years of • x( re 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark brown hair, turning grey, rather Ion" bushy whiskers, meeting under the chin, dark, fresh complexion, round face, bold and hazel eyes, stout make ; dressed well in dark overcoat, a suit ot grey cloth, and black stiff billy hat. He is well known amongst builders m Leicester, Burton- on- Trent Birmingham, and other towns. Description of WILLIAM GROCOCK, late of Stan- • wround, near Peterborough, farmer and shoemaker, charged on a warrant with uttering a forged bill of exchange for i. 37, in January last : about 55 years of age ( but looks yoiinger), about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark eyes, full face fresh com- - nlexion dark hair ( inclined to curl), rather bald on top of head, bark bushy whiskers, walks with quick step ratner bow- legged, but body very erect; dressed in long black frock coat and soft billycock hat. He is by trade a shoemaker, but has been a small farmer. Information to Head Con- stable Hurst, Borough Police Office, Peterborough, North- amptonshire.— Bow- street, November 6. Absconded, charged with forging and uttering a Cheque for .£ 94 15s. on the London and Westminster Bank, Lothbury, on 12tn ultimo : ALBERT HORTON, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, hair, eyes, beard, whiskers, and moustache dark brown, thin face, sallow complexion, slim build ; dressed in dark clothes, respectable appearance. Was tried at the Central Criminal Court, with a man named Richard Jones, on 14tli January last. THOMAS MING, 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, clean shaved, dressed in dark clothes, respectable appearance. Stolen from the person, on 1st instant: a silver lever Watch, No. 556, maker Summersgill, Preston. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, November 6. Stolen from the person of Edward Downing, of West Bromwich, about 8 p. m. on 4th instant, whilst at the wake ground : a Boston lever Watch, with silver dial, No. 6600. Information to Mr. Superintendent Woollaston, West Brom- wich, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, November 6. Stolen from the person of two gentlemen, on Newmarket Heath, on 23rd ultimo : a brown leather betting Book, the cover of which is loose, containing two .£ 20 and two « £ 5 Bank of England Notes, and a Bill receipted by T.' ssier, of London, two of the Notes are No. 30393, London, 12th October, 1877, and 88469, Bristol, 22ncl February, 1877; a note Case, black silk, yellow stitched, diamond shape, containing three ,£ 10 Bank of England Notes, numbered respectively 30316,30317, and 30318, dated 5th February, 1878. Information to Mr. Superintendent Benson, Newmarket, Cambridge.— Bow- street, November 4. Description of three men suspected of having committed a violent assault on the highway upon Mr. David James Jenkins, of Llancadle, at St. Nicholas, near Cardiff, between 11 and 12 p. m. on 26th ultimo, and stealing from his person between £ 4 and £ 5 in Gold and Silver ; a silver lever double case Watch, No. 24274, maker's name Heitzman, Cardiff: one is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light hair, and whiskers meeting under the chin ; dressed in a short coat or monkey jacket, moleskin trousers, and a soft bowler hat; he appeared like a mason, spoke English, but supposed to be a Welshman. The other two were dressed in tight- fitting long black coats, buttoned up, and soft bowler hats, from 25 to 30 years of age, and about 5 ft. 9 or 10 inches high. Information to Mr. Superintendent Thomas, Constabulary Office, Bridgend, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, November 1. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On 27th ultimo, the dwelling- house of William Arnup, of Tunstall Marshm^ n, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a pair of plain calf leather lace- up Boots, low tops, flatish heels with irons, one row of small nails ( sparable's) round edges of soles, with loops behind to pull them on ; a white calico Shirt, with deep collar, and sloped out at back of neck about an inch deep, two buttons on front of collar, and two down breast; a light chummy Hat; and a small quantity of Bread, Meat, and Cheese. By two tramping labourers, one of which has been apprehended; the other is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, fresh complexion, stout build, a native of Whittlesey, Cambridge- shire ; dressed in an old rusty black cloth coat, fustian trousers and vest, plaid scarf, cap, or black chummy hat, and supposed now wearing the stolen boots and shirt, as he left his old ones behind ; he is a good singer, and may probably be found singing in public- houses. Information to Mr. Superintendent Basham, Acle, Norfolk.— Bow- urjc. t, Nov. 8. Between 8 and 11' 30 p. m. on 2nd instant, the dwelling- house of John Elkin, of the Outlanes, near Stone, was broken into, and stolen therein : a double- barrell muzzle loading Gun, stock split near the trigger ; 1 Ham, 4 years old, about 20 lbs. weight; about 15 lbs. of Bacon; 18 fowls Eggs, a bunch of 5 small Keys, and a portion of a pint bottle of Whiskey. Information to Mr. Superintendent Crisp, Stone, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, November 4. During the night of 2nd or early in the morning of 3rd instant, the dwelling- house of Miss Lyddekker, in St. Albans, was burglariously entered and the following property stolen therein : a silver Sugar Dish, a pair of Sugar Tongs, fiddle pattern ; a silver Caddy Spoon, King's pattern ; a pair of heavy massive Indian silver Bracelets ; a pair of oxodised ( napkin) Rings ; an electro- plated Owl Ornament; two or three Roman Coins; 7s. 6d. in Silver; an old purple and yellow knitted Purse, containing about 4s. in new 3d. and 4d. Pieces. Information to the Head Constable, St. Alban's, Hertfordshire.— Bow- street, November 4. Between 11 a. m. and 6 p. m. on 31st ultimo, the house of George Webster, Burntwood, was entered and stolen therein: a black cloth Jacket with velvet collar, pockets on hips, and one inside left breast, containing a red Handkei chief with white spots in centre, rnd white near border; a double- breasted black cloth Vest, with only one row of buttons down front ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, flap fronts, turned up inwards at bottom of legs ; a pepper- and- salt coloured Jacket, pockets on hips, and one inside left breast, containing a red Handkerchief with white spots in centre, and black and white border ; and a pair of pepper- and- salt coloured Trousers, flap fronts, and have been repaired on waist, all part worn. By EDWARD PALMORE, of Hornton, near Banbury, labourer, 29 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, black moustache, whiskers shaved off, very dark looking, stammers when talking; dressed in plaid clothes, and black hard hat; said he lived at Hornton at a farm where hay ricks were burned; and THOMAS STANNER, supposed from Biller- docks or Billesdon, 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, round features, sandy whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark coat, open slop, black hard hat, and cord trousers. Information to Mr. Superintendent Hill, Brown- hills, near Walsall, Staffordshire, who holds warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, November 4. Stolen by means of housebreaking on 29th ultimo, from a shop in Boulton- road, Handsworth : a square black marble Time- piece, white dial, Roman figures, gold gilt figured in corners ; a rosewood or mahogang tea Caddy, with diamond- shaped ivory, & c. laid in the lid, one piece of which has fallen out. Information to Mr. Superintendent Woollaston, West Bromwich, or to Inspector Whitehurst, Handsworth, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, November 1. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Charged with stealing two Ponies, at Stockton, on 21st ultimo, as advertised in Police Gazette of 30th, and who forwarded the same by rail from Grosmontto King's Cross on 22nd : a . man about 35 to 38 years of age, 6 teet high, ginger hair, full face, and little or no whiskers; dressed in long dark topcoat, woollen cord trousers, and soft billycock hat. And a man about 38 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, very pale complexion, whiskers shaved off, dark or black hair, and cockeyed ; dressed in green and black check cloth coat, dark or blue trousers, and black soft billycock hat, or may be wearing blue and green topcoat. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Mr. Superintendent Bell, Police Office, Stockton - on - Tees, Durham.— Bow- street, November 8. Stolen from Carsington Pasture, between 25th ultimo and 1st instant : 17 theave and 1 ewe Sheep, of the Leicester breed, all marked by a bit being cut out under the left ear, also in pitch on the left hip with the letter ' C.', and on the right hip with figure ' 3,' they are very white and clean, having been lately dipped. .£ 10 reward wil be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the Sheep. Information to Mr. Superintendent Sharpe, Police Station, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.— Bow- sireet, November 4. Stolen from the ' Red Lion' inn. Ripley, near Derby, on 24th ultimo : alight bay Horse, aged, 16 hands high," dark legs, small white spot in the off hind fetlock, small bit of hair off above right knee, and grey muzzle ; a strong spring Trap, such as used by grocers, open, painted chocolate and black striped with red, caps of wheels odd, makers Fairholme & Co., Nottingham, square splash boards, made to carry lamps, and and had two attached when stolen, the glass of one cracked, recently tired, painted and varnished, and a set of Harness, about half worn, and brass mounted. Supposed by a man of the following description, between 25 and 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, little or no whiskers, no moustache, puggy nose, and has slight cut over left eye ; dressed in white linen jacket, and fustian trousers. Frequents boxing shows, and is supposed tj have travelled with Chicky Harris, late of Leicester, when he went by the name of Billy. Information to Mr. Supt. Hancock, Langley Mill, near Nottingham.— Bow- street, November 4. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on 16th September last: 2 pairs of satin Stays one black, lilac ribbon, white lace, one white, trimmed with Milan lace ; and yards of white Milan lace, 1J in. wide. By Annie Freemau," dressmaker, 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 ins! high, dark complexion, grey eyes, mole on right cheek, brown hair ; dress black, black cloth jacket, lined writh fur, dark bonnet, trimmed witli flowers. Description of GEORGE HAWKER, charged on warrant with stealing at Warwick, on 21st ultimo : 2 half- sets of china breakfast Service, the property of John Reynolds : lie is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion no whiskers or moustache, light brown hair ; dressed m short dark blue jacket, dark cap, light- coloured trousers ; holds a pedlar's certificate believed to have been issued at Winchester - he sells brushes, & c. Information to Mr. Superintendent Frankton, Kenilworth, or to Inspector Yardley, Warwick — Bow- street, Novernber 8. Description of J AMES COOPER, alias JAMES COOPER LEE, cabinetmaker, upholsterer, & flench polisher who has absconded from Whitchurch, charged on warrant 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. November 15 with larceny : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, light hair, no - whiskers, light moustache, very erect, and quick com- manding speech ; dressed in an old brown cloth jacket, and hard felt hat; he is an army reserve man, and supposed gone to Nantwich, Cheshire, or Oldham, Burnley, or Shaw, Lan- cashire, in search of employment. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Haines, or to Sergeant Thomas, Whitchurch, Salop, • who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow - street, November 8. Description of a man who has absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing a glazier's Diamond, and a pair of elastic- side Boots, at Kempsey, near Worcester, on 2ild inst., the property of Thomas Harber : he is about 29 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, slight whiskers, and heavy moustache, shaves on chin, very large red nose, has a peculiar swaggering gait; dressed in a light grey suit, black bowler hat, and the stolen boots. Is a painter, and is accompanied by a woman, and a child about 5 years of age.' Information to Deputy Chief Constable Checketts, County Police Office, Worcester.— Bow- street, November £ Description of JAMES GALE, charged ( in connection with a man named GEORGE SHORT, who is in custody) with stealing several Portmanteaus, from the Great Western Railway at Plymouth and Paddington : he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark eyes, pale complexion, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in dark coat, vest, and trousers, and round hat. Is a butcher by trade, a native of Marychurch, Torquay, but has lately been residing at 41, Shoulden- street, Bryanston- square, London. Was seen at Newton Abbot, Devon, on the evening of 4th instant. Information to Chief Constable Wreford, Central Police Station, Plymouth, Devon- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— B& w- street, November 8. Stolen from the booking office, at Slough Railway Station, between 17th and 22nd ultimo : a valuable meer- schaum Pipe, representing Gainsborough's Duchess of Devon- shire, handsomely carved. Information to Mr. Superintendent Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, Nov. 8. Description of WALTER GOODWIN, charged on a warrant with stealing, on 4th instant, a costermonger's Barrow, the property of William Rouse : he is 21 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, flight build, light complexion, cast in one eye ; dressed in a speckled cloth coat, dark trousers, and black billycock hat; the Barrow has a light top, with red wheels. He'was fit Dartford on 6th instant. He resides at Bitcham- street, Wectenden- road, Kentish- town. Information to the Head Constable, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- street, November 8. Stolen about 7 a. m. on 5th instant, from No. 36, King's- road, Reading : a silver horizontal Watch, makers Dyers and Sons, No. 28593. By a man a man who slept in the house one night, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion and hair, little dark moustache,. a little round shouldered ; dressed in dark brov a mixture coat, black cloth trousers, greasy at the knees, and black soft felt hat, had the appearance of a smith. Information to Chief Superintendent Purchase, Borough Police Station, Reading, Berks.— Bow- street, November 8. Absconded on 1st instant, stealing two black cloth Coats; a ditto Vest and Trousers; a dark ribbed ( large) Yest and Trousers ; four flannel Shirts ; three white cotton ditto, linen fronts ; two flannel Singlets ; two pairs woollen Drawers ; and a black soft felt Hat : a man ( Portuguese), 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout; dressed in grey suit, and sea boots.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, November 6. Absconded, charged on a warrant with embezzling ,£ 1600 : DAYID DOCTOR, of Laurel Bank, Penge, Surrey, 42 years of age, 5 feet 9 incnes high, very red full face, sandy whiskers, no beard or moustache, and well built; dressed in dark clothes, and high hat. A traveller, and native of Glasgow. Supposed will endeavour to emigrate. Informa- tion to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, November 6. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Middlesbrough, on the evening of 2nd instant : a blue top Coat, since found pledged ; a black striped cloth Jacket, with black velvet collar, dark linings, two outside pockets, and two rents behind, to fit a boy about 16 years of age. By a woman, 35 to 40 years of age, middle size, proportionate figure, light or ginger hair, fresh complexion, supposed to be Scotch ; dressed in old check shawl, old straw bonnet, and white apron. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, November t\ Stolen from a dwelling- house, at Middlesbrough, on the morning of 2nd instant: a gilt Watch and Guard, which were pledged on same day at a pawnshop at Stockton- on- Tees. By a man about 23 to 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, and slender figure ; supposed dressed in a brown topcoat and hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, November 6. Stolen at Middlesborough on 1st instant: a top Coat, since found pledged. By GEORGE THOMPSON, alias JOHN WILSON, a cab driver, supposed to be a native of Scarborough, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light complexion, slender figure, light hair, and has neither whiskers or moustache ; was dressed in a tweed suit, coat darker than trousers, small billycock hat, and laced boots. Information to Chief Constable Saggersoc, Middlesborough, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- spreet, November 6. rant with embezzlement : he is about 23 years old, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown'hair whiskers and mous- tache, clean shaved on chin, medium build, dressed very respectable, and is a librarian , of gentlemanly appearance; it is supposed that he will try to leave the country. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield.— Bow- st., November 4. Absconded from Worksop, Notts, on 8th ultimo, charged with stealing a quantity of Timber at Worksop, which has been recovered ; the property of the Trustees of the late Duke of Newcastle : FREDERICK BIRCH, a sawyer, 29 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, small brown whiskers, has lost one tooth from front of upper jaw, and has had the right hand injured by a circular saw. Supposed to have gone to Liverpool, Hull, or Grimsby. Information to Mr. Superintendent Holland, County Police Station, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 4. Stolen from a stable at Bromley Mill, on 29th ultimo : a pair of man's laoup Boots, patent leather facings, brass eyelet holes, and double soles, nearly new. By two tramps : one about 50 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, medium build, and short cut grey hair; dressed in dark moleskin jacket and trousers, close- fitting cap, and clogs. The other is about 47 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark com- plexion, slender build, and stoops when walking ; dressed in drab linen slop, dark trousers, black billycock hat, and old lace- up boots. The latter may be wearing the stolen boots. Information to Mr. Superintendent Crisp, Police Office, Stowe, or to Sergeant Dix, Police Station, Ashley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, November 1. The man WILLIAM TAYLOR, advertised in the Police Gazette of 28th ultimo, charged on a warrant with two others with stealing 20s. and a Knife, from the person of Alfred Chalker, at Heathfield, Sussex, on 30th September last, has been apprehended and committed for trial at the next assizes for Sussex: his proper name is WILLIAM ROWLES, he belongs to Northampton, and was previously working on the railroad near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Information to Mr. Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham, Sussex.— Bow- street, November 1. Stolen from a watchmaker's shop in Brighton, on 30th ultimo : an open- face very old- fashioned gold verge Watch, winds up in face ; 2 open- face silver Geneva Watches; a gold open- face Watch Case, belonging to a presentation watch, with an inscription inside to that effect. By a young man, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight figure, dark complexion, very slight dark moustache ; dressed in brown overcoat, and black bowler crown hat.
