Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be mane and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. and hour hands, and steel second's hand. Description of ARTHUR PHILLIPS, a harness mater, charged on a warrant with forging a Cheque for £ 7 6s., at Crondall, on 5th instant : he is 31 years of age, 5 feet 7| ins. high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, has three moles back of left hand, ' D' on left side, and scar on left thigh. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot. — Bow- street, August 21. Description of GEORGE GUERNEY, charged on a wan ant with Forgery: he left Blackburn on 12th instant, and will probably endeavour to emigrate to the United States or Canada; he is a joiner by trade, 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 ins. high, black hair, dark moustache, no whiskers, dark eyes, , dark complexion, rather long face, slender built, native of London, and speaks the London dialect, has lost several teeth ; dressed in black billy cock hat, black cloth shooting coat, mixture cloth trousers, lavender coloured neck tie, and turned down collar, his father resides at Uxbridge. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn. — Bow- street, August 21. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen faom the person in Hastings, on 26th instant: a silver lever consular Watch, No. 42728, maker ( supposed) Montezani; also an oval shaped ivory Purse, bound in silver, and set with twenty- five turquoises, containing a few shillings. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Town Hall, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from the person at Preston, on 25th instant: a silver lever Watch, No. 40.43 or 40.45, maker Thomas Burnett, Preston, had att' ched a gold Albert Guard, double bar, and a lion Shilling. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lan cashire.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from the person on Oxford Race Course, on 22nd . and 23rd instant : a silver lever hunting Watch, capped and jewelled, maker Payne, Abingdon, No. 3963, ' A. W.' engraved en case; an English lever Watch, single case, steel hands, maker Rowell, Oxford, No. 6002; a silver lever hunting Watch, ( a Brighton maker), and a gold Albert Chain and Locket, from the back of which the stone is missing ; a lady's silver Geneva Watch, engraved on the outside case ' R. J. C.', and has a christian and surname in full on inside of case. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Head, Oxford.— Bow- street, Auqust 26. Description of GEORGE PRENTICE, who is charged • on warrant with being conccrned, with two others who are now in custody, with highway robbery with violence at Stratford- on- Avon, on 18th instant : he is a labourer, 17 or 18 years of age, but looks older, about 5. feet 7 or 8 inches high fair complexion, thin face, light brown hair, no • whiskers, and very slight moustache, has a sharp and intelligent appearance ; dressed in a suit of dark grey clothes, lace- up boots, and billycock hat. He has a sister living in Borough- road, Burton- on- Trent, named Finch, and also friends at Birmingham where he formerly lived, and was then in the habit of going with a man named Lea with a canal boat, and it is supposed that he is now working on the canal in or near Birmingham. Information to be given to Inspector Brindley, County Police Station, Stratford- on- Avon. — Bow- street, August 26. Stolen on 15th instant, from the person while on the Windsor Race Course : a gold hunter Watch, maker Racine, Geneva crest— a baboon, motto—' Crom a boo'; an open face silver Geneva Watch, maker's name on dial—' French, Royal Exchange' Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead, Berkshire.— Bow- street, Aug. 23. Stolen from the person, at Deal, on 19th instant: a gen- tleman's gold English lever Watch, gold face, gold minute BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On 26th instant, a farm house at Thomas Close, near Penrith, Cumberland, was broken and entered, and the under- mentioned property stolen therein : a silver lever Watch, number supposed 2796, point of hour hand broken off, old- fashioned Chain with two Seals without stones attached ; a pair of strong water- tight Boots, soles slightly worn ; a pair of slender Boots, with elastic sides, soles slightly worn ; a quantity of Fowls Eggs ; a piece of Bacon ; and some Money. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 17th instant., at Shalden, near Alton : 2 blue check Shirts, nearly new ; a pair of plain leather lace- up Boots ; a black cloth Vest; a pair of black cloth Trousers. By a man who gave the name of WILLIAM GROVES, 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, brown hair, sandy moustache; dressed in old dark jacket, blua serge or guernsey underneath, and dark cord trousers. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Waters, Hants Constabulary, Alton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen by means of housebreaking, about 19th instant: 1 gold Caddie Spoon, with tortoiseshell handle, ' A. J. C.' in gilt letters on handle. 1 pair of silver- plated Sugar Nippers, scissors shape, much ornamented, initials 1 A. J. C.' 1 silver Geneva Watch, maker Andre Droz. 1 silver Albert, large round links. 1 ladies dark, brown sealskin Jacket, trimmed with beaver about 6 inches deep, Muff and Hat to match. 1 ladies black silk Dress, with narrow flounces all the way up, half worn. 1 green silk Dress, had white kilting round, not much worn. ' 1 violet silk Dress, not much worn. 1 brown silk Dress, plain. 1 brown silk Dress, ribbed, fit a girl. 1 black silk velvet Jacket, trimmed with Maltese lace, satin straps and buttons. 1 pair of ladies French kid Boots, nearly new. 1 long white ostrich Feather. 3 strings of large coral Beads, and 1 string of cornelian Beads. 1 gent's dark blue pilot Ulster, very long, ' Downs, Norwich,' on strap back of neck, not much worn. 1 pair of black cloth Trousers, fly fronts, lined and worn. 1 black cloth Vest, single- breasted. 1 black silk Hat. 7 or 8 yards of black Satin. Several gentlemen's white linen Shirts, some marked in red C. A. P. C., some in ink Charles A. Cooper. 1 large carpet Bag, flowers iu centre. 1 silver pocket fruit Knife. Information to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz, Borough Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen by means of house- breaking between 2' 30 and 8 p. m. on 19th instant, from the cottage of William Morgan, of Stoke Lacey, Herefordshire: a pair of light tweed Trousers and a single- breasted Vest, nearly new ; a pair of men's light lace- up Boots ; a pail- of women's lace- up Boots, nearly new ; two Half- sovereigns, one Half- crown, and two Shillings. Supposed by two men, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, one wearing a hard felt hat, the other a soft billycock hat, and dark jackets, and supposed to be wearing the stolen trousers, vest, and boots, as tliey left behind them in the cottage a pair of light tweed Trousers and a double- breasted Vest, not much worn, also two pairs of old boots. They had the appearance of Staffordshire men. In- formation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Ovens,'' Police Station, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 21st instant, at Aconbury: an old- fashioned double cased silver Watch; a pair- case cut Hunter; ,£ 3 10s. in Gold; 2 silk Handkerchiefs, one red, the ether black, with blue square ; a pair of lace- up Boots, with toe caps cut off, and slit in side of left boot; and and a brown calico Shirt. By 2 tramps, one about 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, sandy hair; dressed in dark brown jacket, dark trousers and cap. The other, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches. high, slim built, light hair ; dressed in dark coat, trousers, and cap, and supposed to be wearing the stolen shirt and boots, old ones being left in the cottage. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cope, Shire Hall, Hereford.— Bow- street, August 26. T Between 6 a. m. and 6- 30 p. m. on 19th instant, a cottage at Stanford, in the occupation of Thomas Watkins, was broken into and stolen therein : a black cloth frock Coat, with three pockets, one in each skirt and one inside left breast; a pair of dark cloth Trousers left leg has been torn and repaired below the knee ; a loaf of Bread, half a pound of Butter; and an unopened Letter, addressed to Thomas Watkins with Brom- yard post mark; on it. Information to be given to Mr. Supt. Hardman, Police Office, Great Witley, near Stourport, Wor- cestershire.— Bow- street, August 26. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Shotover Park, near Oxford, between 20th and 26th instant: the property of Colonel Millen, 10 half- bred Oxfordshire down Lambs, in poor condition. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 30 Supposed stolen from a field at Starfits, near Kirby Moorside, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, during the night of 21st instant: a black horse Pony, aged, 12 hands 3 inches high, switch tail reaching below the hocks, without shoes, in good condition, the property of John Petch, Esq., Kirby Moorside. Any person who can give such information as will lead to its recovery, and apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, will be rewarded. Information to be given to Inspector Milner, North Rkling Constabulary, Kirby Moorside.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from a field at Stockport Etehells, near Ilandfortli, the property of Mrs. Bruckshaw : a black cart Mare, light build, 15 hands 1 inch high, 5 years old, hind feet white, a bit nipped out of the skin under the right eye, white star on forehead, and spavin on the back joint, inside the off hind leg. Whoever shall give such information as will lead to the appre- hension of the offender or offenders, aad recovery of the mare, shall receive £ 5 reward. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hindley, Police Station, Stockport, Cheshire. — Bow- strcit, August 28. The Horse named ' Yorkshire Bob' advertised in Police Gazette of 6th instant, has been found sold at Chester, and the thieves apprehended, against whom there are two other cases of horse and cattle stealing.— Boru- sireet, August 28. Stolen on 24th instant : an aged cob Horse, 15 hands high, light bay, has the hair rubbed off the off hind leg, front legs bend over. By a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light hair, few whiskers ; supposed dressed in light clothes, and hat. Supposed to have drove the horse away in a small green waggonette, white beading, no cushions, had a sealskin wrapper, red lining, and will most likely sell them. He is well known \ n Brighton, and Notting- hill, London. Information to Le ,,' iven to Mr. Superintendent Baldwin.. Patcham, near Brighton, Sussex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from a field at Keynsham, on 18th instant: a light bay cart Horae, about 9 years old, 15 hands 2 inches high, lame in near front foot, small star on forehead, and two white feet behind ; the property of Mr. R. Williams, of Keynsham. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen off Littlewick Common, during the night of 18th instant: a bay Mare, rising 4 years, 12 hands high, blade legs, has a scar from a cut on the off side of nostril; will answer to the name of ' Minnie.' Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maiden- head.— Bow- street, August 26. Absconded from Crewe, Cheshire, charged with stealing a Horse, Trap, and Set of Harness ( all recovered) : a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 6 inches high, dark com- plexion and hair, no whiskers, and black moustache ; dressed iu a dark tweed suit and hard felt hat, and of gentlemanly appearance. He was traced to Liverpool, where he disposed ef the Horse and Harness. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cooper, County Police, Nantwich, or to Acting Superintendent Morris, Police Station, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 21. The Pony and Trap stolen from Northampton on 13th instant ( advertised in Police Gazette of 16th iiietant) have been found, having been sold at Market Harborough on the same day. The thief is still at large, and shortly after disposing of the Pony and Trap, left by rail for Birmingham. He was then accompanied by a man about 10 years older than himself. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Borough Police Office, Northampton.— Bow- street, August 21. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from a field at Glentham, on 24th instant: a short drabbet slop, two buttons at the top in. front, and one on each wristband, the property of Robert Radley, value 2s. By a man who was traced into Grin-. sby, on 25th instant with slop in his possession, and had \> een offering it for sale : he is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, slight build, short dark hair, whiskers and beard short aud stubborn ; dressed in a navvy's drab canvas slop, fustian trousers, black billycock hat, strong lace boots. Information to be given to Inspector Taylor, Lindsey Station, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, Augusts. Description of HENRY WYATT CHAPMAN, charged on warrant with stealing ) 5 Sovereigns, the money of Joseph Bills, at Heathfield, Sussex, on 13th instant : he' is 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, small moustache, no whiskers, slight build dressed in black cloth jacket and vest, plaid trousers, black billycock hat and lace- up Boots. He is a carpenter by trade, aud has worked for Joseph Firbank, railway contractor at Derby and other places, lie married a Louisa Caroline Moore, supposed at Newthorpe, Nottingham. Information to be given to the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Waghorn, liailsham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bov;- street, A ugust 30. 2 P O L I C E GAZET T E. August 30 Stolen from a public- house at Berwick- « &- Tweed, early, oil the morning of 21st instant: « , patent silver lever Watch, ; No. 6532, maker W. R. Weston, Dunbar, gold balance, and white dial; a lady's silver Geneva Watch, No. 43954, silver, dial, engraved cases, ' M. D.' on centre of outside case, '( Margaret Dumble' on inner case, and a piece of black jet Chain attached ; a Half Sovereign in Gold; and 9s. in silver Money. By a man who gave the name of HENRY JOHNSTON, a native of Ireland, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender made, pale or yellow com- plexion, thin face, light brown hair, blue or grey eyes, who lodged in the house for a few nights, and said he was looking for work; dressed in blue corded jaeket, grey tweed vest and trousers, and silk looking cap, fastened to peak with hook; has been well educated, and stated he had been some years in a chemist's shop. Information to be given to Head Constable Garden, Berwick- on- Tweed, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 28. Description of HENRY SCHRADER, alias CHRIS. TOWERS, charged with stealing a Musical Box ( as bailee) from his lodging, on 19th instant : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and complexion, small dark moustache, slight whiskers, slight build, and of good address ; dressed in a dark tweed suit, hard felt hat, and thin boots or shoes. He lodged in a beer- house in Windsor, kept bj a Mrs. Bray, from 13th to 19th instant, and was in custody here for assaulting the police on 16th instant, when he gave his name and address as Christopher Towers, Huntsmoor Park, Iver, which was afterwards ascertained to be false. He was at Egham and Windsor Races. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hayes, Borough Police Office, Windsor, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 28. Further information respecting the man who stole the Watch from Mr. Millicliamps, of Dinthill, Salop, on 30th ultimo, and advertised in the Police Gazette of 7th instant : his came is THOMAS KENNETT, he is known at Tenbury, Worcestershire, and is charged with breaking and entering the dwelling- house of John Millichamps, and committing the robbery. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Christie, Bridgnorth, or to Police Constable Merricks, Burford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 28. Description of JOHN BLACKWELL, charged on a warrant with having on 19th inst., stolen from the dwelling- house of one Frederick Layton, at Neithrop, near Banbury, a gold Ring ( recovered) : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair and moustache, rather small features, roman nose, rather sunburnt; dressed in a cap with leather peak, double- breasted blue pilot jacket, dark vest and trousers, represents himself to be an engine driver. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cope, County Police Station, Banbury, Oxon.— Bow- street, August 26. Description of ALFRED EDWARDS ( name supposed false), chair bottomer, charged on a warrant with larceny, on 13th instant : about 45 years of age, about 3 feet 3 inches higb, dark complexion and hair, and {; rey eyes; dressed in old black jacket, dark trousers and vest, and hard felt hat. Has been for the last week at No. 56, New- street, Stafford, with his wife and two boys, ages respectively 6 and 11 year?. Information to be given to Chief Constable Segrave, Borough Bolice, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.— BoW- street, August 26. Description of PHILIP H. A BROAD, who left Churchill on 15th and Bristol on 19th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 4 10s., a Counterpane, and other Articles ; the property of Mr. James Salisbury, his master : he is about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, a grocer and draper's assistant, rather pale complexion, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, shaves under the chin, slightly bald on forehead and crown, and of smart appearance; dressed in a dark coat and vest, brown mixture trousers, and black stiff bowler hat. Stated he was going to London. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge.— Bow- street, August 23. Absconded, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: JOHN GALBRAITH, late of No. 13, Ashchurch- terrace, Starch Green, Hammersmith, and late Secretary of the Jarvis Island Silver Mining Company, Ethelburger House, Bishops- gate- street, 55 years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, long beard, turning grey; dressed in dark clothes, gentlemanly appearance, and has a peculiar voice. Information to be given to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, August 23. Charged with stealing from a dwelling- house at Good- shaw- lane, Higher Booth, about 3' 30 p. m. on 19th instant: a Money Box, 6 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 2J inches deep, • and contained an ancient brass Weight, the site of a shilling, and 3- 16ths of an inch thick ; several American small silver • Coins ; an English Penny, with silver centre; an English Two- penny Piece; about 40 copper Coins, English and Foreign, the sizes of penny's, half- penny's, and farthings ; two Stones, size of marbles, set all round with small gold nuggets : t> vo men, one about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sandy hair and moustache, slender build ; dressed in corduroy trousers, light- coloured coat, shoes, and cap; the other about 19 years of age, has a youthful appearance, and dark hair ; dressed in dark clothing, shoes, and cap j both appear to be factory operatives, and tramping through the country. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Stephen Croggs, at Gorsley, Newent, between 2 and 5 p. m. on 15th instant : a frock Coat and double- breasted Vest, of navy blue twill, bouud with blaek silk; a pair of grey ribbed Trousers ; a suit of black and dark grey check Trousers, newly hemmed round bottoms ; a check woollen Shirt, feather- stitched round wrists and down the front; 2 silk pocket Handkerchiefs, different colours, one marked Stephen Croggs, the other with • the initials ' S. C.' in white ; a pair of dark yellow kid Gloves ; 2 black bowler Hats, one round, the other a little flat on top ; a nine- carat gold Ring, en all piece broken out of the inside, > set with dark spotted stone; a gold plated cuff Stud ; a six chamber Revolver ; 3 silver pencil Cases ; a silver Toothpick ; a counterfeit five- shilling Piece. By two tramps, one about 23 years of age, 5 feet tTor 7 inches high, pale, thin face, and thick upper lip ; the other 17 or 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark eyes and complexion. They are no doubt wearing the stolen clothes, as their own were left behind in the house. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Con- stable Chipp, Police Office, Gloucester. — Bow- street, August 21. Cliarged with stealing a double barrel breach- loading Gun, recovered ; the property of John Henry Vessey, of Welton- le- Wold : JOHN BURTON, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, sear on side of his face from a gun wemid, which shows bright, supposed dark eyes, dark curly - hair, no whiskers or moustache, has a finger off one of his hands, aad a plasterer's labourer; dressed in cord trousers, white slop or jacket, white soft billy hat, and had a long blue pilot jacket with him. He is a nativt of London- thorpe, near Grantham, is well known at Kirton in Holland, Boston, Grimsby, and Ripon, Yorkshire. A warrant is granted for his apprehension. Information to be given to Inspector Smith, County Police Station, Louth, Lincolnshire. — Bow- street, August 21. Stolen from a dwelling- house, on 7th instant, at Pedmore, near Stourbridge : a rosewood Work- box, containing a Knife, Pencil- case, and other articles ( all recovered) ; a quantity of Cartes de Visite, Views of different Watering Places, a small brass Lock and Key, a small brass reversible Seal, with the name of each day of the week on it. By a tramp about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, clean shaved ; dressed in black cloth jacket, dirty moleskin trousers, coloured muffler, blue stripe i shirt, and black soft billycock hat. Stated he was a nailmaker. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Wheeler, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, August 21. FELONIES. { Not otherwise described.)
