Description of JAMES or JIM MATTHEWS, a well known horse coper, who gives his address as the New Inn, Hast- street, Bedminster, Bristol, remanded until 14th instant, on a charge of forgery on Messrs. Stuckey's Banking Company, at Wells, Somerset : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, rather sallow complexion, small whiskers, blue eye3, walks upright; dressed in a tigVt- fitting dark plaid suit, and bowler hat; he was accompanied by another mai ^ not in custody), who sent an ei'rand boy from the Mitre Hotel with the forged cheque for £ 60, and thus obtained payment: he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, veiy dark complexion, much sunburnt, little black tvliiskers under and on the chin, slight moustache, rather dark eyes; dressed in a dark suit, and wore a light coloured © range tie; had the'appearance of a cattle dealer, and v/ as" no doubt brought to Wells by Jim Matthews, probably from London. Absconded on 10th ultimo, charged on a warrant with obtaining Goods by forged orders : JOSEPH MUSGROVE, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, and slight brown whiskers ; dressed in light tweed suit, and billycock hat; a book canvasser. Absconded from Northampton, charged on warrant with forging and uttering a Bill of Exchange for the pajnnent of £ 41 : GEORGE ANDREWS, a shoe manufacturer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, proportionate build, dark complexion and hair, black moustache, very little whiskers, walks very erect, and is of respectable appearance. When last heard of was staying at a coffee- house, 250, High Holbom, London. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Borough Police Station, Northampton.— Bow- street, July 31. Stolen from the person between 30th ultimo and 3rd instant, at Goodwood Races : a gold Watch, f- plate lever, No. 35691, makers Spencer and Cook, London; a gold Watch, half hunter, maker Grignon ; a gold keyless hunting Watch, • with small glass face, crest— a lim standing on a crown, maker Phillips. Stolen from the person at Bolton, on the night of 5th Instant: a horse- shoe scarf Pin, with eleven diamonds set in silver and the lower portion gold. £ 3 reward will be paid by the owner for the recovery of the property, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Absconded, charged on warrant with stealing a silver Watch ( recovered), from the person of Walter Mayle, at Stuntney in Ely, on 31st ult. : CHARLES, alias ERNEST CLEMENTS, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7-|- inches high, dark hair, round face, large eyes, thick lips, upright m person, has been a soldier, a butcher, and has worked m iron foundries, was born at Soham; dressed in dark coat, light - pest and trousers, bhck chummy hat, and shabby elastic- side boots, hat, and trousers, very greasy ; may seek employment as a harvestman. Absconded from Beckham, Berks, charged with stealing from the person of James Johnson £ 4 15s. : THOMAS EDGINTON, a labourer, native of Padworth, Berks, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a black billycock hat, black cloth coat, very long, pockets on hips, light vest and trousers of the same material, or black cloth trousers, lace- up boots, tipped and nailed. Information to be given to Inspector Pocock, County Police Station, Reading, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- tirjd, August 6. Stolen from the person during the athletic- sports at Southwell, on 25th instant: a silver lever Watch No. 25047, makers name George Shepperley, Notttingham, and a silver Geneva Watch No. 77597. Stolen from the person on 26th instant, at Pontefract Ruus : a gold lever Watch, enamel dial, No. 46026, has com- mon brass hands. Stolen by means of burglary from a watchmaker's shop at 28, Queen- street, Rhyl, on the night of 2nd or morning of 3rd instant : 4 silver Geneva Watches, white enamelled dials. 1 silver verge Watch. 50 gold Lockets, 9 crrat, some with onyx, blood, and sardonyx stones. 12 gold Wedding Rings, 22 carat. 40 silver Rings, all plain, except three, one of which has five white stones, the other two flat and engraved. 67 gold Rings, of various patterns. 112 silver Thimbles. 65 gold Breast Pins, twenty of them 18 carat, one with diamond, set in black enamel, one with bull's head composed of lava, the horns being white, one with deer's foot of reel cornelian stone, and six set with cameo and encircled with fine gold. 3 large silver Snuff Boxes, two engraved with scroll and the other engraved plaid pattern. 9 Vinegarettes. 1 pair of plated Snuffers, with crest — a prancing horse. 3 dozen silver Tea Spoons, old- fashioned, plain pattern, and 2 ditto Sugar Tongs. 2 silver Whistles. 1 silver Shirt Stud, set with diamond, very old. 1 lady's silver Card Case, scroll engraving both sides. 47 gold Ear rings, 18 carat, some set with cameo and garnet stynes. 10 gold Seals, one large, key shape, with white cornelian stone. 1 gold Brooch, arrow pattern, the body being onyx stone. 5 Opera Glasses, various sizes, in cases. 1 dozen gold Chatelaines. 5 silver Caddy Spoons. 1 lady's Travelling Timepiece, French make, and with fixed key. 1 dozen tops and drops bright gold Ear- rings. 1 large cornelian stone Brooch, silver frame. 1 diaper Table Cloth, marked ' Boddington.' £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such informa- tion as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, ou the afternoon of 27th instant, at Lowthian Gill Cottage, Hestlet, near Penrith, Cumberland: A silver double- linked Albert Guard and Key, with red Stone. A white linen Kytle, two outside pockets ; has been re- paired on both sides, just above the pockets. A pair of nearly new grey- striped moleskin trousers, fali front, brass buttons, and lined with white twilled calico. A pair of blue and red worsted Braces. A German silver Watch- case. A small white- handled Razor. A white flannel Undershirt; short sleeves, and one but- ton at neck. An imitation silver scarf Ring, with red stone. A quantity of Cake and Preserves. About a shilling's worth of Postage Stamps. A double- breasted Jilack and grey check tweed Jacket, four pockets outside, one pocket inside left breast, lined with grey wincey, and grey check covered buttons. A double- breasted blue pilot cloth Waistcoat, supposed lined with white twilled calico, and black wood buttons. A twilled cotton Shirt; colours, red, white, and blue; white buttons. Two pairs of Shetland grey ribbed Stockings, man's size. A large cotton Handkerchief, colours supposed to be red, black, and white. Supposed by tramps. On 28th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. Dobbie, of Arthur- street, Gloucester, was entered and stolen therein : A lady's open- face gold English lever Watch, No 43311. A long gold Chain, secret link, with two gold Keys, gold Whistle, small gold Penc- il- case, and gold Locket attached. A fine gold cameo Brooch, A ditto portrait Brooch, 2 pairs of fine gold Ear- rings. A pair of long Ear- rings, with fringe at bottom. Ditto short Ear- rings, grape pattern at bottom. A fine gold Necklace, with Locket attached. A plain ditto ditto. 2 silver Brooches. A small blue enamel Locket. A small gold Albert, secret links. A pair of gold Sleepers. And about £ 5 or £ 6 in Gold and Silver. A man about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or II inches high, brown whiskers and moustache, and rather red face ; dressed in high silk hat, black frock coat, dark tiousers, and having a military appearance, was seen loitering near the house during the afternoon. Stolen, by means of burglary, from the dwelling- house of Captain Craigie, Cambridge Town, Frimley, during the night of 27th instant : a silver Tea Pot; a Sugar Basin, and a Cream Jug, fluted crest; a Cornucopia ; two Tea Spoons, shell pattern ; two Orders of K. C. B., and two small ditto; a Medal for Singapatam ; also five electro- plated Egg Spoons ; six metal Tea Spoons ; two travelling Clocks, one a repeater, gold mounted, the other common brass ; and an old Mackin- tosh. Information • to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hib- berd. Surrey Constabulary, Farnham.— Bow- street, July 31. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on 29th ultimo, from Westhall; the property of Mr. John Davy : a bay mare Ponv, aged, about 12 hands high, branded on near hind quarter with letter ' D.', broken knees and stiff in fore legs, and white spots on back. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gobbett, Hales- worth, Suffolk.— Bow- st., Augitsi 7. Stolen on 3rd instant, from outside the ' Aquarium tavern, Tothill- street, Westminster : a chesnut Gelding, 15 hands 2 inches high, brass mounted Harness, crest— an eagle, light Dog Cart, high wheels, painted green, picked out with brown, containing a mackintosh Coat. By a mar, 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, slight whiskers ; dressed dark mixed tweed coat, light vest and trousers, black felt hat.— Metropolitan Polhe, B Division, August 7. Stolen on 1st instant, from East Ilsley Sheep Fair : a ram Lamb, of Hampshire Downs pedigree breed, ' 27' branded in pitch on the near side. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent O'Neill, Wantage, Berkshire, or to Police Constable Cooper, East Ilsley, Berkshire.— Bow- street, August 6. Stolen from Holmer, near Hereford, on 22nd ultimo : a young light brown gelding Donkey, long hair, might be clipped. Any peraon giving such information that will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the Donkey, will receive £ 2 reward. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Davies, Police Office, Hereford.— Bow- street, August 6. Stolen from a field at Bolton, about noon on 51st ultimo: a light bay harness Horse, about 15 years old, about 15 hands high, white star on forehead, white saddle mark on back, hind legs white about half way up, sand crack inside ' of one forefoot, and white heel on the other; tail reaches" to its hocks, ordinary black mane, very full inside sole of forefeet, fast trotter, and in good condition. The Horse is known as ' Yorkshire Bob' throughout the country. By a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, rather stout build, light moustache and no whiskers ; dressed in a black cloth shooting coat, supposed cord trousers, and black billycock hat. £ 5 reward will be paid by the owner for such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief, and recovery of the Horse. Information to be given to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Aug. 6, The man described in the Police Gazette of 22nd ultimo as W. CLARKE, alias W. A. PALMER, charged with steal- ing the Horse, Cart, Harness, & c., irom Warfield Rectory, Berks, on the night of 21st June, has been apprehended, and stands remanded till 7th instant; he is known by the name of WILLIAM PARKER, alias RICHARDSON, alias GATES THE GENTLEMAN, alias GENTLEMAN JOHN, alias COVENTRY JACK; supposed to have been previously convicted of horse stealing and sentenced to penal servitude. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Millard County Police Station, Wokingham. Berks. — Bow- street A , a Stolen during the night of 26tli instant, from Cookham Berks : a dark bay cob Horse, 4 years old, 14 hands high, one wall eye ( near), a white blaze down the face, two fore and one -'"' J'-'- . 2 POLICE GAZETTE. Stolen during the night of 15th instant, from a field at Stapleton : a black Mare, in good condition, 7 years old, about 15 hands 2 inches high, low on near hip, a little coarse about the hocks, plain shoes in front, with letters ' A. J.' stamped on. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Rawle, Fishponds, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, July 31. Stolen from off a Farm, Merthyr, on 19th instant, a roan- coloured Filly, 2 years old, about 12 hands high, black legs, switch tail, unbroken or shod, in good condition, and ' US' burnt on near side under saddle ; the property of Mr. Rowland Simons, farmer. Whosoever will give such infor- mation to Deputy Chief Constable Thomas, Constabulary Office, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, as will lead to the recovery of the Filly will receive £ 1 reward.— Bow- street, July 31. LAB. CEHIT AID EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from 3, Arthur- road, Beading, on 3rd instant : a silver lever Watch, maker Dyer, No. 17970, with a silver Albert Chain attached ; a pair of brown and black plaid Trousers and Vest of same material ; a violet coloured Necktie ; and a forester's Sash. By FREDERICK HOBBS, a cabinetmaker, who had lodged in the house two nights, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark com- plexion, slight dark moustache, rather weak eyes, and occasionally wears spectacles ; dressed in black coat, light trousers, and low hard felt hat. Information to be given to Inspector Moulden, Borough Police Station, Reading, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Aug. 7. Absconded, charged on a warrant • with larceny as a bailee of a silver Watch : RICHARD WOOD, about 30 years of :> ge, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, light complexion, light curly hair, small light moustache, no whiskers, pock- marked, a- id rather good- looking; dressed in light grey tweed suit, and Scotch cap ; carries a black leather bag with him ; state d he was a widower, and a native of Ashford, where he had a little girl staying with some friends. He frequents public- houses and gets watches to clean, and frequently talks about driving engines for some firm. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Mayne, Police Court, Sittingbourne, Kent.— Bow- street, August 7. Further information respecting THOMAS PLENDER- LEITH WALKER, advertised in the Police Gazette of 2nd instant: late a traveller in the flour trade, and for whose arrest a warrant has been issued charging him with embezzling .£ 500, the moneys of his employers ; he is 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair, parted in centre, and growing low over the forehead, heavy moustache, face shaven, rather high cheek bones, of good appearance and address, has a rather dreamy look about the eyes, and a strutting gait; usually dresses in a light grey or brown tweed suit, flat- topped black felt hat; frequents temperance hotels. £ 2h will be paid for his apprehension. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Denthill, Salop, between 1 and 5 p. m. on 30th ultimo : a silver English lever Watch, No. 5801, very large Roman figures, the two hands off, * H.' Millichamp * scratched on inside case. By a man, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, fair complexion, light hair and'whiskers, just beginning to grow, stout build, hangs his head down a little, is a farm servant; dressed in dark mixture suit of cloth clothes, nearly new, old strong lace- up boots, and high jimcrow hat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Christie, Bridgnorth, or to Police Con- stable ( 31) Merrick, Burford, Salop.— Bow- street, August 7. Stolen from the Blue Lion Inn Great Ponton, on 30th ultimo : a lady's gold Geneva Watch, a gold Albert Chain with Key ; an old silver verge Wacch ; two gold Brooches ; two old silver Guards ; and one jet Chain. Supposed by two men, one 18 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 8 inches high, a little pockmarked about the nose, pale complexion, little or no whiskers ; dressed Li a grey suit of cloth clothes, and black billycock hat. The other is about 30 years of age, 5 ft. 6 or 8 inches high, pale complexion, black hair, ancl thin make, dressed in a dark grey suit : this man was carrying a small dark box, about 16 inches by 12 and 6 inches deep, contained Spectacles, which he offered for sale. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Wynne, Spittlegate, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, August 6. Stolen from the residence of a clergyman in Middles- brough, on the evening of 1st instant : a silver plated Box, 4 inches long and 2J- broad, and has a representation of the * Last Supper' upon it. By a man about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high; dressed in a suit of dark clothes, and stated that he was a French polisher. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, York- shire.— Bow- street, August 6. Absconded on 31st ultimo, charged with stealing £ 200, the money of the Corporation of the borough of Leicester : THOS. ALLEN, police clerk, 33 years of age, 5 ft. 9 ins. high, dark hair, cut short, dark heavy moustache, tinged with brcra n, small side whiskers cut close to ears, may shave all off, dark complexion, heavy eyebrows, hazel eyes, big nose, has a Jewish appearance, and carries his head forward; dressed in a blue serge jacket and vest, brown and black square plaid check trousers, and square top black billycock. Has been an assistant clerk in the Warwickshire Constabulary at Aston, and sanitary inspector at Addlestone, Surrey, has in his possession a vast amount of gold, and may endeavour to leave the country. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Farndale, Town Hall, Leicester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 6. Absconded, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: GEORGE GABRIEL, late of 15, Edith- street, Haggerstone, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, pale complexion, brown whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin ; dressed in dark suit, ancl black felt hat, respectable appearance, a shop- man. Information to be given to Inspector Mc William, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. •— Bow- street, August 6. Absconded from Wigtown, charged with falsehood, fraud, wilful imposition, and embezzlement: WILLIAM DAVIES RONEY, a solicitor's clerk, 24 years of age, about 5 feet 5 irclies high, light brown hair, brown or grey eyes, no whiskers or moustache, round face, pale complexion, short neck, round shoulders, Scotch dialect, and a native of Wigtown ; generally dressed in a brown hard felt hat, and a suit of brown or grey light tweeds. The accused absconded from Newton Stewart on JOth ultimo, and on following day he was seen in Dumfries, He is well known in Glasgow, having served there for two or three years in a law or mercantile office. It is supposed that he will endeavour to obtain employment as a clerk in some of the principal towns in Scotland or England. Information to be given to the Chief Constable at Wigtown, who holds a Sheriff's warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Aug. 6. Stolen from a bedroom at the ' Harbour' hotel, Lowestoft, on 30th ultimo : a ladies gold lever Watch, maker Benson, London, No. 20137, with Victoria gold Chain, snake and ball pattern, drop end, with gold coin, the size of a half- penny, supposed to be Spanish. Supposed by a man, from 40 to 50 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high ; dressed in a tweed suit, black hard hat, had with him a small black bag. Information to be given to Inspector Jeffries, Police Station, Lowestoft, Suffolk.— Bow- street, August 6. Absconded, charged with stealing from his lodgings at Hanley, between 22nd and 23rd instant: a silver lever Watch ( recovered), a black Jacket and Vest ; a pair of Trousers, light cloth, aci a silk Handkerchief, blue border : JAMES McDEEMOTT, 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, medium build, sunburnt, dark brown hair, cut short, one of his top teeth projects out; he is supposed to be wearing the stolen apparel, he having left his own clothes behind. Information to be given to Chief Constable Windle, Borough Police Office, Hanley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension .— Bow- street, August 6. Charged on warrant with theft of £ 478, belonging to his employers Messrs. Robt. Small & Co., Lime, Cement and Coal Merchants, Dundee. with whom he had been engaged as chief clerk and cashier for several years prior to 25th instant, when he absconded : THOMAS TURNBULL, of Scone, in Perthshire, 32 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, red hair, whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, and blue eyes ; dressed in hat, black surtout eoat, but- toned up, hiding the vest, darkish grey trousers, elastic- side boots, small black necktie, and white shirt; opens his eyes widely when speaking, plays billiards, drinks freely, and is a heavy smoker. The Money consisted of Clydesdale Bank Notes, of the following values— 3 for £ 100, 5 for £ 20, 12 for £ 5, and 18 for £ 1. It is suspected that he has left the Country. Special enquiries should be made at Shipping Offices, & c., as information may be obtained which may lead to his capture abroad. It is probable that the accused would on 25tb, 26tb, or 27tli ultimo, change the Scotch Notes for gold or for English notes. £ 50 reward is offered to any person or persons who will give such information to W. B.
