AMOUNT received for PILOTAGE of VESSELS in 1877. The information required in this Return cannot be furnished, as no part of the pilotage is collected in this office. It is received by the pilots themselves, who are scattered over a large district of coast. The Act does not render it imperative on all vessels to take pilots; numbers, particularly traders, do not do so. The pilots are, moreover, engaged in other occupations, except when their services are required in their capacity of pilots, which occurs at very irregular periods, bteamers usually have a pilot specially appointed to them : either the master or one of the crew. r r J rr Thomas Smith, Harbour Master. 14 January 1878.
