C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. • The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. and white cotton Handkerchiefs; a flowered white linen Table- cloth ; and a white cotton Chemise. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, June 14. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AID MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 3id instant the dead Body of a full- grown newly- born female Child, wrapped up in a piece of an old calico . apron, with a patch in corner and a small one near the centre, and a piece of sacking, was found in the Birmingham and Warwick Canal, near Adderley- street, Birmingham. The Coroner's jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' Information to be given to Major Bond, Chief of Police, Birmingham. — Bow- street, June 14. On 6th instant, the Body of a newly born male infant, was found in the canal at Wolvercott, near Oxford. Informa- tion to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector. Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, June 12. Between 10 and 11 a. m. on 7th instant, the dead body of a Male Child was found in the Rectory Grounds, Handsworth. The body is well developed, and was wrapped in an old cotton sheet, torn and patched, and several folds of brown paper. On one piece of the paper the name and trade addresses at Birmiagham, Manchester, and in London, of ' A. Stedall, importer and manufacturer of mantles and shawls/ are printed in a circle. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Woollaston, West Bromwich, or so Inspector White- hurst, Handsworth, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, June 11. FORGERY. ARTHUR PLATT, described in Police Gazette of 10th ultimo passing under the name of SIDNEY ANDERSON, forged' and uttered a cheque signed ' H. Hargreaves,' on 30th ultimo, at Derby, and absconded ; he is now wearing a moustache, and dressed in grey suit. Description of a woman charged with obtaining £ 74 10s. on 26th March last, by means of a piece of paper, purporting to be an order to Messrs. Smith, Payne and Smith, Lombard- street to pay Mrs. Randall or Bearer, and who has on several occasions attempted to obtain, and obtained, money from tradesmen by presenting a cheque drawn upon blank paper in favour of the housekeeper of the gentleman by whom it is rourported to be signed, and who states she is sent by the housekeeper : 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, very stout, full face and fair hair; dressed in dark clothes, and can be identified She has been seen in company of a man 281 years of a<* e dark complexion, moustache and whiskers, and chin < haved • dressed in dark cutaway coat, low black hat, and ot smart appearance. Supposed stolen from a field at Combe Hay, on 10th instant : a bay Mare, well bred, about 16 hands high, and aged ; has a scar on right pin bone, causing her slightly to limp, and shoes off hind feet. Stolen from a field at Yardley during the night of 10th instant : a bay cart Horse, aged, between 16 and 17 hands high, white hind fetlocks, white star on forehead, and in good condition. Stolen from a fisld at Dunwood Hall, Leek, about 4 a. m. on 10th instant : eight hog Sheep ( recovered) ; the property of Mr. Thomas Hulme. The Sheep were taken to Newcastle- under- Lyme and sold in the fair the same day by a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet !) or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and eyes, no beard or whiskers, and of slender build ; dressed in black cloth jacket and vest, cord trousers, soft sammy hat, and blue necktie, carried a blue pilot overcoat and » hip, and had the appearance of a cattle dealer. Information to bo given to Mr. Superintendent Williams, Leek, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, June 14. Supposed stolen, from Tabley Park, Ley, Knutsford, about 4 p. m., on 11th instant, a dark brown Colt, 2 years old, three parts bred, black points, branded ' 68 ' on off fore hoof. A reward of £ 5, with all reasonable expenses, will be paid for its recovery and the apprehension of the thief or thieves. Absconded from Winchester on 1st instant, charged with stealing a Donkey ( recovered); the property of Dean Cooper, of Botley, Hants : JAMES HARRIS, alias GINGER, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sandy hair, whiskers and moustache, crooked nose, rather stoutly built, and attends all the principal fairs in Hants and Sussex as a drover. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Fey, Hants Constabulary, Winchester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 14. Stolen, during the night of 12th instant, from Alter> Somerset, the property of Mr. james Barnard : a dark grey mare Pony, eight years old, about 14 hands high, tail cut short, collar mark on breast, rather low in hind fetlocks, recently shod, cork in one foot. The iron grey Hackney Mare advertised in Police Gazette of 11th instant as stolon from Egloshayle, Cornwall, has been found straying, and restored to owner.— Bow- street, June 14. Stolen from a stable on the night of 8th, or early on the morning of 9th instant, from Greensted House, the property of Mrs. Mary Smith : a black Horse, 14 hands high, three white feet, white stripe down forehead, burnt mark on off side of head, saddle marked, and in good condition. Also a Waggonette, without hood, painted brown, broad lining, fine : ined, cushions merino, brown in- cloth, a piece of silver plate on back of deor, stamped on ' Winchester,' odd cap on off front wheel, imitation wicker on sides ; 3 sets of silver plated Harness, one set nearly new, pony set marked ' W. S.' on winkers ; 5 riding Saddles; and a new Clipping Machine. £ 30 reward will be paid to any person giving such informa- tion as shall lead to the conviction of the thief or thieves. Stolen from a field near Stalybridge, during the night of Sth instant : a brown draught Horse, 15£ hands high, the hind feet and off forefoot white, in good condition. Informa- tion to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Etaly- bridge, Lancashire.— Bow- street, June 11. Found, supposed stolen : a dark brown mare Pony, years old, 12 hands high, long mane and ' tail, a little white on hind fetlocks. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Howells, Shrewsbury, or to Police Constable Edwards, Dorrington, Salop.— Bow- street, June 11. Stolen on the night of the 6th instant, from a field at West Harnham, the property of Mr. John Roe : a dark iron o- rey cart Mare, 4 years old, 15J hands high, black legs, and newly shod, has a slight scar on the near hind leg from a kick, and in good condition. Two men of the following description are suspected of stealing the above Mare, one about 37 years of a « e, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, rod face, sandy hair, whiskers, and° moustache, chin shaved ; dressed in brown coat, pockets at sides, supposed dark trousers and vest, brown leather waiters, and bard black bo- vler hat. Carried a light coat on his arm, and had the appearance of a lierse dealer. The other had the appearance of a gipsey. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Stephens, Fisherton, Salisbury, Wilts.— Bow- street, June 11. Stolen from a field at Bottom House, near Leek, on the night of 5th instant, the property of William Chapman, a dark brown Horse, 4 years old, 14hands high, tail cut rather short, in good condition. By two men of the following de- scription, who were traced to the Queen's Arms, Congleton, Cheshire, where they stopped for about an hour and fed the horse : one is 40 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark moustache, spoke with an Irish accent, and had the appearance of a low horse dealer ; dressed in dark grey overcoat and low crowned hat. The other is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, very much pock- marked, slight sandy whiskers, and supposed to have an impediment in his speech and to go by the name of NOT- TINGHAM ROUGH ; dressed in short round jacket, dark trousers fitting very tight, and had the appearance of a jockey. The horse, when seen at Congleton, had a lady's side saddle and bridle on ; the saddle has been cut and altered, and is carried, when not in use, in a black canvas bag. Information to be given to Mr- Superintendent Wil- liams, Constabulary Office, Leek, Staffordshire— Bow- street, June 11. Stolen from Bridgwater on the night of 5th instant : a dark brown hack Horse, aged, about 15 hand. 3 high, one hind foot white, slightly lame of front foot, and short tail. A reward of £ 1 will be paid on recovery of the animal and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Bridgwater, Somersetshire.— 1 Bow- street, June 11. Stolen from Eyton, Lydbury, North Salop, during the night of 7th instant: a light brown mare Donkey, with rather short ears, mane trimmed off, white face, aged ; the In: jr. nation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Caswell, Church Stretton, or to Sergeant Williams, Bishops Castle, Salop.— Bow- street, June 11. Stolen about 5th instant, from Ashbourne- green : a brown Mare, about 10 years old, 15 hands high, white star and streak down forehead, short tail, off hind foot white as high as fetlock, and several white spots on back, the off fore foot is thicker than the near foot. Also stolen from the stable of Mr. Frank Smith, farmer, near Ashbourne, a Saddle, with spring stirrup irons artachecl, and an old Bridle. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, June 11. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on Sth instant, from a cart at Rotherfield, Sussex : a dark brown cloth Overcoat, velvet collar, silk facings, pockets each side, pocket inside left breast, lining torn under the arm, the right coat tail torn by the rub of a cart wheel, dark brown lining, and had in one pocket a red and white cotton Handkerchief. Also, stolen on 10th instant, from a grocer's shop at May- field, Sussex : a shop Till, containing about 12s. in Silver and Coppers, by a man, 18 to 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion, dark brown hair, proportionate build, and a railway labourer ; dressed in a white slop or jacket, bowlcr- crowned hat, and old heavy half boots. The Till has been recovered. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Pearless, Uckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, June 14. Charged on a warrant for stealing, on 25th April last, £ 450, the moneys of his employers, a German, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, sallow complexion, brown whiskers and moustache, lost most of the back teeth, rather hollow cheeks, has a feeble walk, and is consumptive. Lately resided at SLade- lane, Levenshulme, Manchester, and formerly lived in Liverpool ; is a clerk. Has a brother now residing at Middlesbro'. £ 20 reward will be paid by his late employers for liis apprehension and con- viction. Information to be given to tile Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street, June 14. Absconded on 22nd April last, charged on warrant for embezzling Moneys ; the property of his employers, Messrs. R. Hornsby and Sons, of the Spittlegsite Ironworks : THOS. MERRELLS RAMPLEN, cashier, 45 vrs. of age, 5 ft. 3 or 4 inches high, square build, grey ei'es, fair complexion, light- brown hair, which is very thin on the top of head, little or no whiskers, small sandy moustache, high cheek bones and forehead, contracts forehead and eyes in talking, very erect, walks very quickly, and is a native of Ipswich. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent. Wynne, Lincolnshire Constabulary, Spittlegate, who holds the warrant for his apprehension, and will supply photographs on application.— . Absconded from Manchester on 3rd instant: a maa about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, swarthy com- plexion, eyes and nose prominent, dark straight hair, cut short, small whiskers, chin shaved, very heavy dark brown moustache, walks with a quick short step, leans his head forward a little when walking, has hesitating manner in speaking, and London accent; was dressed in black cutaway coat, light small chetk trousers, grey overcoat, with velvet collar, and black billycock hat: charged with stealing £ 26 it Gold and Silver; a set of gold enamelled and diamond 2 POLICE GAZETTE. June 14 Bracelet; a brooch Pendant and Ear- rings to match; a large gold cameo Brooch; a large gold old- fashioned mourning' Brooch ; a set, consisting of coral Bracelet, Ear- rings, and Pendant ; a gold diamond and emerald Brooeh, with Pendant to mat . h ; a gold Neckligee ; a gold half- hunter Watch ; a gold lever Watch, cream- coloured face ; a heavy gold Guard, fancy pattern, attached a Locket made of two old Guineas; a gold chain Bracelet; and a heart- shaped Locket, with car- buncle setting. Both of the watches are of the old style of: manufacture, and one of the brooches was formerly worn lengthways, but is now worn crossways, and the marks of the alteration of the fasteners are visible on t'ie back. ,£ 20 reward will be paid by the owner of the property, for his apprehension, and the recovery of the property, or in propor- tion to the amount recovered. Absconded on 5th instant, from High- street, White- chapel, stealing £ 150 : EDMUND CURTIS, 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark eyes, dark brown hair ( curly), moustache and whiskers ( cut short), chin shaved, and slightly built; dressed in dark tweed suit, high hat, mourning band, side spring boots, holds up his head when talking, has peculiar expression of eyes, stoops when walking, right shoulder higher than left. Had a bag in his possession, containing a loaded revolver ; is likely to visit Maidstone, Brighton, the Saracens Head publichouse, Ware, Hertfordshire, and the Queen's Arms publichouse, Peckham, where his daughter is barmaid Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, June 12. Absconded from Newcastle- on- Tyne, on the morning of Yth instant, stealing £ 212, the monies of his employer : THOMAS CRAIG, who occasionally adopts the name of GRAY, 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light curly hair, worn long behind, no whiskers or moustache, fresh com- plexion, round features, thin build, walks erect, speaks quickly, gentlemanly appearance ; dressed when last seen in a black fancy cloth coat, dark mixture trousers, black hard felt billycock hat, Oxford shoes and gaiters, and wore a gold flat scarf pin with diamond in centre, and had with him a long blue cloth overcoat, is a native of Newcastle- upon- Tyne, and is by profession an auctioneer's clerk. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. It is believed he will endeavour to emigrate. £ 20 reward will be paid for his arrest and re- covery of the stolen money, or a sum in proportion to the amount of stolen money recovered. Description of HENRY ATTREE, charged on warrant for embezzling money, the property of the Registrar of Goole Countv Court : he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 ins. high, fresh complexion, round face, grey or blue eyes, dark brown hair, cut short, slight dark moustachG, a clerk, has lived several yeais in Leeds, last resided at Goole, good education, stout build, walks erect, but wide gait, and heavy on his legs ; was born in the army, fond of talking about military affairs and associating with soldiers, has been for some years a Rifle Volunteer ; generally dresses in grey suit, and small hard black billycock hat, has the leather cut on top of one of his boots to ease his foot. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Goodall, West Riding Constabulary, Goole.— Bow- strr. u, June 11. Stolen from a bed- room at the Norfolk Hotel, Little- hampton, on 4tli iustant : a gold Watch and Chain, a gold Brooch, a gold Locket, a silver Locket, two gold Rings, a pair of gold Ear- rings, a silver Tooth- pick, a silver Thimble in case, and a dark leather Purse, containing 4s. in silver. By a man 45 years of age, average height, hair turning grey, long whiskers, and heavy moustache ; dressed in a black coat, plaid trousers, black felt hat, and has a wart on the left side of his nose. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Tuttock, Littleharnpton, West Sussex.— Bow- street, Juue 11. Description of ELIZABETH ROADWAY, charged with stealing, i. t Shifnal, on 4th instant, a Book ( recovered) : she is about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, light brown hair, pale complexion ; dressed in a light brown dress, black bonnet, and grey shawl, all very old. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Superintendent Ivins, Wellington, or to Sergeant Meredith, Shifnal, Salop, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, June 11. Stolen in Middlesbrough, on the morning of 7th instant : a silver lever Watch, maker Davidson, Newcastle, No. 26722, and had attached a long silver Guard. By a man about 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark swarthy com- plexion, long face and nose, no whiskers, and a native of London ; was dressed in long dark old coat, old grey trousers, and billycock hat. Generally employed about theatres and music halls as a scene shifter. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 11. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 103 15s.: ALFRED JAMES KIRKLAND, late of Park- grove, near Chiswick, 22 years of age, looks older, 6 feet high, pale complexion, dark hair and eyes, small dark moustache and whiskers, thick lips ; drosses well in dark grey suit, and bowler hat. Sporting appearance, is a member of the Anglian Boating Club, and is well known amongst boating men, friends reside at No. 73, St. Augustine's- road, Camden- square, Camden Town. Information to be given to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry.— Bow- street, June. 11. near one eye, and respectable appearance ; dressed in a brown velvet skirt, brown tunic, dogskin jacket, and brown straw hat brimmed with black velvet and grey feather. Information to be given to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton, Lancashire. — Bow- sirsd, June 11. Stolen on ,41st ultimo, from a lodging house, three Blan- kets, one calico Shirt, one Table Cloth, one Apron, and one Chemise ; the table cloth and shirt have been found pledged by a woman 25 years of age, and rather short; dressed in a light dress and wore a dark coloured waterproof ; she left the same day of the robbery, in company with a tall navvy. In- formation to be given to the Head Constable, City Police Office, St. Alban's, Herts.— Bow- street, June 7. Description of JOHN CARD, alias JOHN GREY, a gunner of Devon Artillery Militia, of Granby Barracks, Devonport, who deserted on 31st, charged on a warraut with stealing a Crocodile Skin Case, containing a £ 5 Bank of Bngland Note, a Sovereign, and a Railwaay Return Ticket of G. W. R. ; from the Royal Hotel, Devonport, on 31st ultimo ; the property of his employer, Lieutenant the Hon. C. R. G, W. Bampfylde. Card, is a native of Winc^ nton, Somerset, 26 yrs. of age, 5 feet 9f inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, small moustache, turn- up nose, has had an injury to his leg, is smart and active ; dressed when last seen in a brown- grey suit, a new light- mixed helmet- shaped hat, and may be wearing a shirt which was stolen. He has been con- victed of fiaud in Somersetshire ; was formerly in 18th Hus- sars ; frequents race courses, and is well known to cab drivers, horse trainers, & c. Had a brother working in Bristol as a smith. Information to be given to Inspector Evans, Borough Police, Devonport, Devonshire, who holds a Warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 7. Stolen from the dweliing- house of Thomas Baker, at Horncastle, on 30th ultimo : a Blanket and two Sheets ( recovered), and two Pillow and one Bolster Cases. By a man and woman. The man is from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 ft. 2 inches high, slim build, light brown hair and small whiskers, sallow complexion, is very bow- legged, and is a tramping tailor; dressed in black frock coat, wears it buttoned by the bottom button, drab trousers, and black or dark billy hat. The woman, who passes as his wife, is about 35 years of age, very low of stature, thin face, and an irregular set of teeth ; dressed shabbily. She is believed to be a native of Derby ; the man is a native of Nottingham, and amongst his mates usually goes by the name of ' Nottingham.' They are both suffering from itch, and will most likely lodge at Union Workhouses, lodging houses, or low beerhouses. Description of SPOORS BROOKS, alias ROBERT JACKSON, who has failed to report himself to the police at Gateshead : he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 8i inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, marked with scar on right cheek, lost a bottom tooth, largo scar on penis, mole on back, scar bottom of back, ditto first linger left hand, and a large one on left wrist. He was convicted of assault and robbery at Glasgow on 27th April, 1874, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude, and was discharged from Chatham Prison on 4th April last. H. I.' on back of left forearm, ' H.' on back right forearm, mole on top of right shoulder blade, and mole on right hip. He is a native of Feltwell, Norfolk, and by trade a hawker. He was convicted of larceny at Shrewsbury Sessions in July, 1852, and sentenced to 1 calendar month; at Ludlow Sessions, in October, 1852, sentenced to 1 week and 7 years penal servitude ; at Hereford Sessions, in September, 1860, sentenced to 3 calendar months; at Hereford Sessions, in March, 1861, sentenced to 4 years penal servitude ; at Hereford Sessions, in July, 1865, sentenced to 7 years penal servitude; at Warwick, in A. igust, 1872, sentenced to 28 days ; and at Leicester Sessions, on 16th October, 1872, he was again Convicted of larceny, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision. He left Leeds on 30th ultimo, having notified to tlie police his intention to reside in the Downham district, in Norfolk, but has not done so, nor yet reported himself.
