C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably nccessarv that, an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor IHLtlSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 12 p. m. on 9th instant, two men were met by Police Constables Thomas Child, and Joseph Seats, at Quedgley, near Gloucester, when they fired at the Constables with revolvers, wounding the latter in the left knee : one, 34 or 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout. build, dark heavy whiskers and moustache, dark complexion; dressed in a blue monkey jacket, dark trousers and a black soft bowler hat with a gold albert chain suspended across the waistcoat; the other, 26 or 28 years'of age, 5 ft. 10 ins. high, proportionately make, rather fair complexion, no whiskers,, thick dark moustache ; dressed in a blue suit, and hail the appearance of a seafaring man. It is believed these men were loitering about for the purpose of committing burglaries. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester.— Bow- street, May 15. On 3rd instant, the Body of a newly born male infant was found upon the sea beach, near Caroline- place, Hastings. It was sewn up in a bag made of sail canvas, and wrapped in a piece of old flannel, on the same day a coroner's inquest was held upon the body of the said child, when a verdict ' of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. The articles in which the remains were found may be seen at the Police Office, Hastings, where it is requested that any information likely to lead to the discovery of the offender or offenders may be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, May 6. Stolen from the person, at Willington, on 1 ltli* iustaiit : a silver lever Watch, No. 5246; maker William Burnett, Durham, cream- coloured dial, with a crack across it, had a brass Albert, snake pattern, attached ; a steel Tobacco Box. 4s. in Silver, and a white Handkerchief with black border. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Dunn, County Constabulary Office, Durham.— Bow- strett, May 15. Stolen from the person at Sevenoaks Steeple Chases, on 7th instant : a gold lever hunting Watch, No. 38401 ; a gold braggen Watch, crest— griffin, value £ 20 ; a silver lever hunting Watch, value £ 5. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent O'Kill, Kent County Constabulary, Sevenoaks. — Bow- street, May 13. Description of a man, name unknown, charged with com- mitting a highway robbery, on 6th instant, at Tborrington, near Clacton- on- Sea, Essex : he is, about 21 or 22 years of age, from 5 feet 4 to 6 inches high, thin visage, upper jaw projecting, brown hair, fair complexion, no whiskers, and speaks with a peculiar impediment*- as if bis tougue- was too large for his mouth; dressed in a white holland slop, buttoned down the front and pockets on each side ( outside), dark worsted cord trousers, Blucher boots,: dark cap with : cheesecutter peak, and had the appearance of a respectable labourer, his clothing having a newish appearance. Stolen from the person at Edenbridge Steeple Chases, on 2nd instant : a lady's gold open- face Watch, flat glass; a lady's gold Watch, with Chain and pilver Compass., attached ; and a silver hunting Watch. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Kewell, Police Station, Tunbridge, Kent. - Bow- street, May 6. Description of RICHARD CRAGGS, tramping mill- wright or cartwright, charged on a warrant with stealing a grey Pony ( recovered) from a stable at the Buck Inn, Great Ayton, on the morning of 7th instant : be is about 55 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, pale complexion, thin face, high cheek bones, grey hair, and whiskers ; dressed in dark cord trousers, grey tweed coat and vest, soft black billycock hat, and old biucher boots. He is much addicted to drink, and frequents beer- houses and common lodging- houses. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Acting Inspector Severs, Police Station, Stokesley.— Bow- st., May 10. Found in Wellington, on 29th ultimo, and supposed stolen : a two year old black Colt, about 11 or 12 bands high, long tail and mane, in low condition, and small Welsh breed. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Ivies, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, May 8. Stolen from a field at Old Hill, Rowley Regis, Stafford- shire, during the night of 5th instant, the property of George Turley, beerhouse keeper, Old Hill: a cream- coloured horse Pony, 14 hands high, 5 years old, black mane and tail, ( short), black legs, has been clipped three or four months, saddle and collar marks, and a few brown hairs under the breast, and in fair condition. Information to be given to Inspector Price, Police Station, Old Hill, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 8. • BURGLARY HOUSE Stolen by means of housebreaking, from a cottage at Pentreclawdd, near Oswestry, between 2 and 5 p. m., on 4th instant : a Paisley Shawl, in good condition ; three yards of new check Shirting ; a light brown winsey Dress ; a Towel ; a dark cloth shooting Coat, white specks, pockets on hips and inside left breast ; grey Shirt ( union) blue and white plaid stripes; and a pair of lace- up Boots, brass lace holes and gutta percha soles. By three tramps, two men and a woman, one a tall man, dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark coat, moleskin trousers, and hard or billycock hat ; the other a shorter man, dressed in grey jacket or slop, cotton cord trousers, cap with peak, may be wearing the stolen boots, as he was seen barefooted a short time previous, ancl a short woman, dressed in dark shawl and carried a baby. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Shropshire.— Bow- street, May 8. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Absconded from Rhos, near Ruabon, Denbighshire, about 5th instant, supposed to be implicated in a case of arson with two other men in custody, and remanded until 20th instant : a labouring man, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark whiskers, and grey eyes ; dressed in a brown coat, corduroy trousers, hairy cap, and wore clogs ; supposed to have gone to Festiniog, Merionethshire, where a railway tunnel is now being made.— Information to be given to Mr Superintendent Wilde, Police Office, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, May 15. FORGERY. Absconded, charged on a warrant for forgery: SAMUEL LUCAS LANCASTER LUCAS, late of Trotterscliffe Rectory, near Maidstone, 50 to 55 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, long, thick set, short neck ; dresses usually in dark clothes, never wears a collar, arid high hat. Absconded on 1st instant, charged with uttering a forged Cheque : ARTHUR PLATTS, footman, 22 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, cheeks puffed,. dark brown hair and whiskers.'. ( small), round shouldered, looks down when talking ; dressed in dark cut- away coat, dark vest and trousers, and high hat; his father resides at Eastwoodhay, near. Newbury, Hants ; he has been in service at St. Neot's, Huntingdonshire. Warrant issued. Supposed stolen, from Tong Castle, near Shifnal, Salop, on the night of 6th instant : two Ponies, one small black Mare, 6 years old, 13 hands 2 inches high, and very heavy in- foal ; the other a raping Mare, 14 hands high, aged, no shoes on fore feet, scar on. top of head with no hair on it, and a nip. out of her left, ear. Stolen from a field at Ladymore, near Bilston, during the night of 7th instant : a bright bay cart Horse, aged, 16 hands high, white star, on forehead, collar mark on right shoulder, enlarged hocks supposed from spavins, black mane and tail, and in good condition. Description of ROBERT ROBSON, a Militiaman, who absconded from Richmond, charged on a warrant with stealing from f lie person of Thomas Pickard ,£ 16 10s. in Gold, on 12th instant: he is 27 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, . fresh complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair ; dressed in militia suit and militia boots ; he is supposed to belong to Hull, and has lived at Scarborough and other places in the North of England. PALMER, alias KITTLE, charged on warrant'with stealing the grey Gelding, three Sets of Harness, Saddles, Bridles, & e., the property of Mr. William Sworder, Tawney Hall, Stapleford Tawney, advertised in Police Gazette of 1st instant : he is 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, fresh and ruddy complexion, stout build, dark brown hair, c it very short; dressed in dark overcoat, dark tweed coat, vest, and trousers, fitting tight to legs, hard felt hat, with broad band ; is well known at. Loughton, Woodford, Leytonstone, Wan sted, arid neighbourhood of Epping Forest, and was convicted at the Central Criminal Court, 5th May, 1873, for horse stealing and housebreaking, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude, discharged on license 2wd June, 1877, which expired. on the 5th instant. Stolen from Whittington- Heath, near Lichfield, between 7 a. m. and 7 p. m., on 29th ultimo : an ewe Sheep, Shropshire breed, and has a pitch mark ' D' on right side, nearly worn out. By a man from 20 to 25 years of age, about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, very slight build, thin pale face, few light whiskers and moustache, and hair cut short ; dressed in old black coat, dark trousers, black ancl white check scarf, black hard felt hat, and very light boots. Stolen from an unfinished building in Millbrook, Hants, during the night of 6th instant : a Spirit Level, about 10 ins. long, and a bricklayer's large Trowel. Supposed by an Irish- man, who had been working there, about' 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, and dark hafr"; dressed in old fustian trousers, very dirty, old ragged sleeve waistcoat, old fustian coat, with patches at the back, and old felt hat. B.' on handle"; spirit Level, 8 inches long, ' W. B.' on side. Supposed by- two men, one from 25 to 30 years of age, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender build, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, hair on chin ; dressed in a dark or black cloth jacket with pockets on each side, Bedford corduroy trousers, hard round billy hat, and lace- up boots. The other from 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, light complexion, light or sandy hair and moustache, hair rather curley at back of head ; dressed in dirty light coat, much worn, reefer make, old cotton corduroy trousers, soft billy hat, dirty white neckerchief with red spots, elastic- side boots. They had the appearance of bricklayers on tramp, and had a little white terrier dog, with black spot on its back witli them. Description of WILLIAM HERBERT, charged on warrant for embezzling £ 2 2s. 2d,, the monies of Mr. John Whitley Rylance, provision dealer, Bull- street, Birmingham, on 17th ultimo : he is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 ins. high, dark hair and complexion, little whiskers on sides of face, sharp keen eyes, turns out his feet when walking ; has been employed as a grocer's porter, is known at Great Barr, Wednesbury, and Westbromwich. Description of MORGAN THOMAS JONES, a clerk, charged on warrant with emblezzling £ 2 6s. 6d., the monies of Messrs. Boyle and Co., china and glass merchants, Steel- house- lane, Birmingham, on 13th ultimo : he is 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, thin made, dark hair and com- plexion, little light whiskers on side of face, two fingers on right hand deformed, has friends residing at Etruria, the Potteries, Staffordshire, and Bristol. Information to be given to Chief Constable Bond, Birmingham, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 13. Absconded from Achleton, near Bridgnorth, on 2nd inst., charged on a warrant with stealing £ 5. : WM. LAWLEY, 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, rather inclined to curl, a waggoner, and a native of Dormington, near Newport, Salop, from which place he was sunt to Quail School in 1868, and absconded from the latter place in 1870 ; dressed in dirty- white slop, cord trousers, and billycock hat. Has relatives in Newport, Salop, and Manches- ter, to which place be booked by train from Shrewsbury on the night of 2nd instant. Absconded from Bradford on or about lst instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : FRED. HART, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark comj plexion, black hair, whiskers and . moustache, thin features, large nose, scar on left side of jaw from a sore, speaks French fluently, is a native of London, and has been travelling for a corn- factor. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Campbell, Bradford, Yorks.— Bow- street, May 10. Stolen from the dwelling- house of John Nicholls, Don- nington, near Albrighton, between 6 30 and 8' 30 p. m., on 5th instant, 12 Sovereigns : by his brother, THOS. NICHOLLS, a collier, 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, pockmarked, and has a white spot on one eye ; dressed in dark cloth jacket and vest, four pockets out- side of jacket, one inside left breast, two inside skirt pockets, old cord or black trousers, old elastic- side boots, and cap with peak. Has resided some years in Willenhall, " but is a native of Pontesbury, Salop, and has been in different parts of England and South Wales. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Ivins, Wellington, or to Sergeant Meredith, Shifnal, Salop, who hoids a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 10. Absconded Cundall, on 5th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a silver verge Watch, ( recovered) : JOHN EASTER, supposed fictitious, 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, 110 whiskers or moustache, proportionate figure, a labourer, and supposed to belong to Driffield ; dressed in a dark grey tweed coat and vest, checked pattern, grey tweed trousers, striped pattern, black tie, dark velvet cap with peak, and trimmed with black fur, grey and yellow shirt, and elastic- side boots ; he is likely to seek employment amongst farmer's ; had several pawn tickets in his possession referring to articles pledged in York. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Alderson, Leyburn, or to Acting Inspector Hutchinson, North Riding Constabulary, Wath, near Ripon.— Bow- street, May 10. Description of NATHANIEL GEORGE HOLLOBONE, recently employed by Mr. E. H. Hitchcock, fruiterer and egg merchant, Guildford, charged on a warrant with embezzle- ment. He is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, stout, well built. Has the appearance of having been in the Army, has friends residing in Eastbourne, Sussex. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Law, Borough Police, Guildford, Surrey.— Bow- street, May 10. Description of CHAS. DAVID GEE, alais DOUBLE- DAY, charged on a warrant with larceny at Leverington, near Wisbeach, on 27th ultimo : he is about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, small dark whiskers and moustache, sallow complexion, blue rings on 2nd and 3rd fingers left hand two stars, anchor, sword, and cross, on back of left hand, union jack, two crowns, and cross on left arm, anchor on back of right hand, and is a fitter. Has been three times convicted of felony, and is at present under police supervision, but has failed to report himself. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Redding, Elm, near Wisbeach, Cambs.— Bow- street, May 10. Absconded, charged on a warrant with embezzlement.: JOHN W. MADDLE, late of Cleredon- villas, Somerset- road, New Barnct, commercial traveller, 35 to 40 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, sallow complexion, blood veins very distinct on face, large white scar on cheek, dark hair and moustache, turning grey ; dresses well, some- times in grey tourist suit. Information to be given to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow• street, May 8. Description of ISAAC TAYLOR, a clerk, until recently employed by the Yorkshire Coal and Steamship Company, charged on warrant with embezzling £ 45 : 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, hair and whiskers turning grey, thin build ; generally wears dark clothes, and a silk hat; of good education. He is addicted to habits of intemperance and betting. He left Goole on 3rd instant. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Goodhall, Goole, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 8. Description of JOHN STOREY, charged with stealing .£ 80. He is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stoutly built, light complexion, brown hair, slight whiskers down side of face; dressed in dark grey suit, black billycock hat, and lace- up boots. He absconded on 4th instant. War- rant issued. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., May 8. Absconded from Reading on 2nd instant, charged with larceny : CHARLES HUMPHRIES, alias WHACKER, alias SKIVER, a bargeman, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, very red face, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a blue guernsey, light trousers, monkey jacket, and cheese- cutter cap. And SAMUEL WINDSLOW, or KIBSON, a native of Devizes, a bargeman, 22 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, very thin face ; dressed in a blue guernsey, light cord trousers, and billycock hat. Both well known on the Thames between Oxford and London, and the Kennet and Avon Canal, between Bath and Reading. Information to be given to Inspector Pocock, Berks Consta- bulary, Reading, who holds a warrant for their apprehension. — Bow- street, May 8. Stolen from the dwelling- house of J.
