CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. S> ot! ce.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Sigsiatare of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he maae and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, Loudon, W. C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all jLetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for Insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AHD MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. The dead body of a newly born female child, was found Jjwith a large wound on the right side of the head), on the common at Bradninch, Devon, at 1 p. m. on 13th instant, the body was found in a crinoline muslin bag, concealed under some browse or hedge pareiugs ; the child did not appear to have been born many hours when found. The coroner's jury iave returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Collins, pevon Constabulary, Cullompton. — Bow- street, April 17. . FORGERY. Absconded from Birmingham, charged on a warrant with forgery : THOMAS COX, a silversmith, 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, turning grey, and has a shuffling gait. He is a native of Birmingham, and is well known iu Sheffield. In- formation to be given to Major Bond, Police Office, Detective Department, Birmingham.— Bow- street, April 23. Warrants have beer, issued against BALTZAR HENRY FRITHJOFF STALHAMMAR, for feloniously uttering a forged Bill of Exchange for the sum of £ 218 Os. I Id., and also for feloniously uttering another forged Bill of Exchange for £ 230 12s. 6d.: he is from 43 to 48 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow dark complexion, dark brown hair, slightly tinged with grey, full beard and whiskers of the same, brown eyes, short sighted, wears spectacles, has a habit of continually replacing them with his hand, believed to be a Swede, and has a peculiar and rather foreign accent when speaking English. His photograph was taken about 10 years ago, and he may probably now wear his hair cut quite close to the head. £ 500 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to his apprehension, by Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire, to whom informa- tion is to be given.— Bow- street, April 23. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on Warwick Race Course on 11th and 12th instant : 1 gold hunter Watch, crest— a phoenix on back, French make, spring of case damaged. 1 silver lever Watch, open face, date on case ' 1874,' name inside of case ' Wm. Finch.' 1 silver Geneva Watch, No. 22196, and Albert Chain attached. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Frankton, Kenilworth, or to Inspector Yardley, Warwick.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Nottingham races, on 17th instant: a gold lever Watch, No. 49127. In- formation to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz, Nottingham. — Bow- street, April 23. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of 16th instant, the clwelling- house of James Baldwin, near Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a Field Glass, a brown silk Umbrella, a long black pilot Overcoat, a cotton Handkerchief, a pair of brown leather Gloves, and three pairs of Spectacles, the property of James Baldwin and Henry Sedgwick. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Isgate, Hemel Hempstead, Herts.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, from the dwelling- house of William Elland, labourer, Stona Hall, Whinfell, uear Kendal, on 8th instant : a black cloth shooting Coat, two pockets outside laps, one inside left breast, black cloth covered buttons ; a black cloth Vest, single breasted, covered buttons; a pair of very dark plaid cloth Trowsers, with flaps ; a silver verge Watch, supposed No. 3601, had attached a short steel Chain and Key, with ' Moore, Kendal,' stamped on it; a long silver Guard, twisted link, 3 ounces weight; and a pair of laced Boots, nearly new. By a tramp, 32 years of ?. ge, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion, very thick neck, full face, with blotches or pimples on it, supposed native of Ireland. When last seen was wearing the stolen clothes, lace- up boots, and Scotch cap with peak. Has been traced to Barnard Castle. Information to be given to Inspector Shields, County Chief Constabulary Office, Carlisle, Cumber- land.— Bow- street, April 18. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Chilham, between 5 and 8 p. m. on 14th instant, the property of Oliver Gould : a square wooden cash Box, about a foot square, containing about £ 10 in Gold and Silver, in an old brown leather Purse, a Will, Indentures of Apprenticeship of Oliver Gould, some Insurance Policies and other valuables, a 5s. Piece amongst the money ; also two pairs of brown mixed tweed Trousers, uew ; a pair of black Trousers ; a double- breasted Vest to match; a pair of grey check Trousers; a double- breasted Vest to match, the two latter suits have been worn, and the buttons on trousers have ' Gould and Son, Chilham' on them; a table Cloth; a toilet Cover; and two pairs of Sheets. Supposed by a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high; dressed in fustian suit, and old black billycock hat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Noakes, Police Station, Ashford, Kent.— Bow- street, April 17. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Hope- road, Sale, between 6 and 10' 30 p. m. on 14th instant : a silver fish Knife and Fork, fiddle pattern, embossed, and engraved with letter ' B.' ; a silver cake Knife and Fork, same pattern, with letter ' B.' on handle ; a plain goM Bracelet; a gold cable Bracelet; a gold • mourning Brooch, set with pearls and a diamond in centre, with inscription ' Presented by an affectionate grandmother in memory of my mother'; a lady's gold guard Bing, same inscription ; a pair of long Ear- rings, bottom ornamented with gold beading in the form of the cross ; a pair of small gold Ear- rings, buttercup pattern ; a lady's gold Bing, set with a dozen pearls ; a gold Brooch, in shape of a true- lover's knot ; a silver oval- shape Locket, imitation wreath of oak leaves round edge ; a gentleman's gold guard Chain, with topaz seal. Entrance effected by skeleton keys during the absence of the family at church. £ 5 reward will be paid for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Supposed by two men who were seen loitering near the house the previous evening, one tall, the other short, both dark, and wearing dark clothes, the short one wearing a cheesecutter cap. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Dobson, Brentwood, Essex.— Bow- street, April 15. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Berkley, near Frome : five Heifers —- two roan, one white, one spotted, aud one red ; the pro- perty of Mr. Joseph Crees, Berkley Farm. A reward of £ 20 will be given to any person who will give such information that will lead to the recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Deggau, Police Office, Frome, Somersetshire. — Bow- street, April 23. Stolen, on the night of 8th instant, from an orchard at Castlemorton, an aged half- bred chesirat Mare, 14 hands high, low back, light colour mane and tail, white star on forehead, and in low condition. A reward of £ 2 will be paid to any person who will give such information that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender, on application to Mr. Pratt, the owner. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Turner, Police Office, Upton- on- Severn, or Sergeant Merrefield, Police Station, Welland, Worcestershire. — Bow- street, April 23. Stolen at Ystrad- ucha farm, Swansea Higher, on the night of 17th instant : a light bay Filly, 3 years old, about 15 hands high, black mane and tail which' is rather long, black legs, rather a light cart breed, not shod. Information [ to be given to Mr. Superintendent Howlett, County Con- stabulary, Neath, Glamorganshire, who will pay a reward of £ 2 to any person giving information as will lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen from a field at Bushton James, near Leek, on 10th instant, a dark brown filly Colt, 2 years old, 14 hands high, with black legs and a scar on the near thigh. The Colt has been traced traced to Leicester, where it was booked on the 11th instant for St. Pancras Station. London. Two brothers named RICHARD BROWN and WILLIAM BROWN are in custody charged with stealing the same, and stand re- manded to the 25th instant. Another man is still at large : he is about 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, very much form speckled, and wears a rough beard about three weeks growth.; dressed in a long black coat and box hat, and had the appearance of a horse dealer. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Williams, Leek, Staffordshire.— Bow- s:., April 18. Stolen on 15th instant : a bay mare Pony, 13 hands high, white spot on right side, answers to ' Pol y'; a panel Cart, painted black, picked out with green, ' George Massey, 43, Berger- road, Homerton,' thereon ; 20 dozen pairs of Boots, sizes various, some with star and nugget on heels ; a quantity of steel sole cutters, sizes various; 2 silver Watches, one open- face English lever, f- plate, one gilt single case verge, gilt dial; a black cloth Overcoat, pocket at side and inside left breast; a dark green horse Rug and chaff Sack, ' Brett, Homerton,' thereon ; a set of pony Harness, mounted, bridle tied with wax end.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, April 17. Stolen on the night of 12th instant, from Broomhall Farm, Sunningdale : a chesnut Mare, thorough bred, aged, 14 hands 1 inch high, carries her head high ; a dogCart, painted dark green ; two sets of brass- mounted Harness, one very good, the other not so good; 2 or 3 Bridles; 2 riding Saddles ; a pair of new Reins ; several articles of Wearing Apparel ; and a Timepiece. Supposed to be one of the two suspected of a similar offence at Redhill, Surrey, and advertised, in the' Police Gazette of 5th instant. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Blake, Berks Constabulary, Clewer.— Bow- street, April 17. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. ALFRED ROWE, whose description was published in the Police Gazette of 27tli ultimo, has been apprehended and committed'for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, at Exeter, on 3rd July, 1878. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Moore, E Division, Devon Constabulary, Chudleigh. — Bow- street, April 23. Absconded from Birmingham, on 28th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: THOMAS WOOTTON, solicitor's clerk, late of Newport- read, Brighton- rd., Moseley, 4C years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, light sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, bald on top of head, wears glasses, and has a stooping gait; dressed in green tinted overcoat, ancl high silk hat. Photogragh may be had on application. Information to be given to Major Bond, Detective Department, Birmingham.— Bow- street, April 23. Description of ENOCH HAND, clerk, late of No. 15, Victoria- terrace, Clifton- street, Wolverhampton, charged with embezzlement : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, light complexion, sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, his whiskers rather short, stout build, short nose with very large nostrils. He left Wolverhampton about the end of February last, and has friends living in Manchester, Derby- shire, and Longton, Staffordshire. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Osweli, Stafford, or to Sergeant Chaplain, Rugeley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his . pprehension.— Bow- street, April 23. Absconded on 8th instant, charged on a warrant witli stealing a quantity of Wine, the property' of bis master Sir Harcourt Johnstone : ROBERT W. DIXON, alias DICK- SON, late butler ancl house steward,- CO years of age, 5 feet il inches high, pale complexion, brown hail and whiskers, high forehead, coarse mouth, speaks very quickly. He is well known at Scarborough. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Williamson, Great Scotland - yard, Loudon, S. W.— Bow- street, April 23. Absconded on 10th instant from Evesham, charged on a warrant with larceny as a bailee of a Trap : EDWARD WILLIAMS, soda water manufacturer, 28 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy hair, round features, fresh com- plexion, stout build. He is accompanied by bis wife, who is very short and thick set. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Stanton, Pershore, or to Sergeant Ganderton, Evesham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen between 11 p. m. ancl 2 a. m. on the night of 20th instant, from a cottage at Scole, Norfolk ; the property of Eli Boulton, labourer : a dark blue pilot Overcoat ; a pair of lace- up Boots ; and a dark mixed Scarf, By a tramp who was allowed to sleep in the kitchen during the night ; he is about 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair aud moustache, ancl gets his living by singing in public- houses. Supposed wearing the stolen property, having left his old coat and boots behind. Information to be given to Sergeant Kirkpatrick, Diss, or to Mr. Superintendent Seaman, Pulham Market, Haileston, Norfolk.— Bow- street, April 23. Stolen from tlie dwelling- house of Mr. Robert Barnes, of Buckden, at noon, on 19th instant : a pair of large sized Trousers, light plaid material ; a pair of lady's elastic- side Boots, much worn ; a gold Scarf Pin, and a common Brooch. By two tramps, having the appearance of moulders, dressed in dark clothes, one wearing a slop under his coat, one of them is about 2- 1 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy whiskers and moustache ; the other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 ins. high, walks a little lame. They enquired the way to Welling- borough. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Copping, Saint Neots, Hunts.— Bow- street, April 23. Charged with having on 19th instant, at Tydd St. Mary, stolen from the ' Tydd Goat' inn, a black pilot Jacket, velvet collar ; a brown cloth Vest; a pair of brown cloth Trousers, which has a stripe in them ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, nailed ; and a light coloured Handkerchief, the property of William Whitwell. A tramp, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, slender build, brown hair, sallow com- plexion, and lost right little finger ; dressed in drab jacket, ^ ^ dark grey trousers, black soft billycock hat, very high m i sion_. crown. Absconded on 8th instant, from Cradley, charged with embezzlinsr Monies of his master, Mr. Thomas Patrick : HENRY WOOLLEY, 19 years of age, about 5_ feet 1 inch high, dark hair and eyes, broad face, and stout built; dressed in black cloth jacket, light trousers and vest, hard felt hat, strong lpce- up boots, and rough blue cloth topcoat; he is a farm servant, has been employed milk selling, is of Irish parents, born in England, and has friends living at Birts Morton, Worcestershire. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Ovens, Bromyard, or to Sergeant Smith, Cradley, near Malvern.— Bow- street, April 18. Stolen between 9 p. m. and 6 a. m. on 9th instant, from a back kitchen at Whitewell House, Llandinabo ; the property of Mr. John Lee : a pair of strong watertight Boots, cut under the } aco holes to make them larger, caps on toes, and half worn. By a tramping Irishman, who was allowed to sleep in the back kitchen during the night ; he is 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, no whiskers or moustache, and broad features ; dressed in dark suit, half worn, and billycock hat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Smith, Ross, or to Sergeant Price, Harewood End, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, April 17. 24 dessert do,, 12 table Spoons, 24 dessert do., 2 gravy'Spoons, 12 tea Spoons, 6 egg Spoons, 3 caddy Spoons, 6 small sugar Tongs, 2 sauce Ladles, fish Knife and Eork, 2 fish and 2 dessert Knives and Forks; 3 suites of diamond Jewellery, 19 , stones, diamond Stud and Bracelet, and cameo Suite, in cases. He received the following £ 10 Bank of England Notes in part payment, viz., No. 29088— 29096, dated at Manchester. 20tli January, 1877. Stated that he has been at Thornbury, near Collingwood, North Canada, where he has a brother, a farmer. Lived with the Countess of Sefton as under footman and with Sir Walter Ridley about 9 years ago, his right thumb nail is split, buttons on clothes may probably be marked ' Smith and Sons, Chester,' if wearing elastic- side boots may have the name of ' Jones and Son' on straps. He is in the habit of corresponding and betting with William Eglington, Rue Clery, Boulogne, France, turf agent, & c., letters, & c., having been found left till called for at a great many post offices in the country in names of Oliver, Burrows, & c. Information to be given to Inspector Williams, County Police Office, Chester, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- • Bow- street, April 17. Absconded on 6th instant, charged with embezzlement : JOHN HOWARD KING, late of 4, Cambridge- road, Gunnersbury, Middlesex, traveller, 39 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, bloated face, brown curly hair, redish brown whiskers and moustache, very stout built; he is well known at Burton- on- Trent, may endevour to emigrate. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 50 will be given by Messrs. Dann and Vallentin, Lambeth Distillery, London, for such information as will lead to his apprehension and conviction. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Williamson, Great Scotland Yard, London.— Metropolitan Police, A Division, April 17. Absconded on 3rd instant, charged with theft or embezzlement: JAMES FRASER, gardener, Stobo Castle, Peeblesshire, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hah-, long dark beard, whiskers, and moustache, a native of Nairn- shire, Scotland ; dressed in dark suit, light grey topcoat, and black dress hat; it is supposed that he will try to sail for America. Information to be given to Chief Constable Watson, Peebles.— Bow- street, April 17. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Christopher Morris, Esq., of Upton, near Chester, on 6th instant: £ 10 in Money. 1 set of pearl amethysts, set in gold, Brooch, Ear- rings, Necklace, and Pendant. 1 set of pink topaz, Brooch, Ear- rings, Necklace, and Cross, very old- fashioned, stones in cross not quite so large. 1 yellow amethyst pearl Cross and Ear- rings, set in gold. 1 gold Watch Chain and Locket, with black enamel cross. 1 gold Bracelet, with pink coral. 1 ditto, with blue enamel and pearls. 1 ditto, with pearls. 1 large cameo Brooch, set in gold. 1 gold link Bracelet, with heart podlock. 1 green malachite and cameo Brooch and Ear- rings. 1 small gold Brooch, tie with turquoises. 1 gold Locket, set with turquoises. 1 small gold Brooch, with dark blue enamel. . 2 Guineas, one Spade. 1 gold and diamond set, Brooch and Ear- rings. 1 Necklace with five Lockets. 1 Bracelet, cameo and gold set. 1 Brooch, Ear- rings, ami Bracelet. 1 gold Bracelet, broad band, with lock, set with blue enamel and small diamonds. 1 large diamond Stud, value £ 80. 3 pearl Studs. 3 amethyst Studs. Several Pins for Scarves. 2 Pencil- cases, one gold, one silver. 1 set of carbuncle Buttons. 1 set of bloodstone Buttons. 1 set of fiorentine mosaic Buttons. 1 French leather Jewel Case, by Bondet, of Paris, about 10 by 6, and 5 or 6 inches deep. 55 silver Spoons, twelve Table, twenty- four Dessert, twelve Tea, two Gravy, one Moist Sugar, two Tea Caddy, and two fancy. 24 Table Forks, 24 Dessert ditto. 1 Fish Slice and Fork. 1 ease of Salt Cellars. 1 case of Dessert Spoons, lined with gold and embossed with pattern of different fruits. 2 Cups, one engraved, the other plain. 2 Sauce Ladles. 1 Tea and Coffee Service, engraved, consisting of Tea- pot, Coffee do., Sugar Basin, and Cream Jug. 6 pairs of small Sugar Tongs. I set of Ice Spoons. Silver gilt Tongs and Scoop. 1 Kettledrum Service and Tray. 2 Fish and Dessert Knives and Forks. Porridge Bowl, Knife, Spoon, and Fork. 1 Cup, 1 Spoon, 1 Knife, and 1 Fork. 1 Sandwich Case and Flask. All the above silver Plate bears the crest and motto of a lion in circle, and motto round rim ' Scuto Fider.' By GEGRGE OLIVER, a butler, 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, medium build, dark brown or auburn hair, parted in centre, dark sandy whiskers, chin and top lip shaved, ruddy complexion, small grey eyes, nose rather inclined to be pug, has a quiet way of speaking, can speak French fluently, walks with a quick step, respectable appear- ance ; supposed to be wearing dark clothes, said to be a native of Windsor, and to have an uncle named Holden, a builder, at Camden Town, London; is fond of gambling, and may attend race meetings. The following property has been recovered, pledged at Manchester: 1 tea Tray, 1 sugar Basin, 1 cream Jug, 1 tea Caddy, 18 tea Spoons, 2 pairs sugar Tongs, 1 caddy Spoon, 8 table Spoons, 1 salt Spoon, 6 salt Cellars, and 6 other Spoons ; 2 Teapots, Coffee Pots, sugar Basin, 24 table Forks, FRAUDS AMD AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. She was convicted at Spalding on 5th April, 1877, for stealing Wearing Apparel, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and 5 years police supervision. Description of EDWARD RAND, subject to police supervision, who has failed to report himself : he is 77 years of age, 5 feet 2\ inches high, slender build, thin face, sallow complexion, grey hair and eyes, belongs to Great Tey, Essex, and is a gardener ; he has a scar on left thumb, is partially paralyzed, and walks lame. He was discharged from Spring- field Gaol on 3rd instant, after undergoing 12 months impri- sonment for larceny, having been previously convicted three times for petty larcenies in Essex. He left Stan way Union Workhouse on 6th instant, and is supposed to have gone in the direction of Romford.
