C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence chargcd, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Whereas, on the night of 9th ultimo, some person or per- sons did feloniously and maliciously set on Fire a large Hay Kick and a Straw Rick ; the property of Mr. G. D. Temple- man, Chiselborough, Somerset. A reward of .£ 50 will be paid by the Earl of Ilchester, and £ 50 by the West of England Insurance Company, in addition to the sum of ,£ 50 previously offered by Her Majesty's Government to any per- son who will give such information and evider. ee as shall lead to the apprehension and. conviction of the offender or offenders ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Depart- ment will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually set the Ticks „ on fire, who will give such evidence as shall lead to- the like results. HUMPHREYS, charged with obtaining Money by means of a forged cheque : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dissipated look, light moustache, and stout build ; dressed in black frock open coat, black vest and trousers, high silk hat, with mourning band ; has travelled for the. firm of Hogarth and Co., London, with samples of fancy jars of jam. By a man about 20 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, sandy hair, no whiskers Sandhurst, Berks, on the night of 2nd instant : a dark brown fur Coat, lined with light fur, the collar and cuffs of dark brown beaver; a light summer Great Coat, lined with silk ; a Great Coat, a good deal worn, but with a nearly new velvet collar; a reversible Mackintosh, of very light texture ; a soft felt Hat with rather a broad brim ; and four wooden and one Meerschaum Pipe. Stolen by means of burglary at Winster, Westmorland, on 2lst ultimo: a dark grey Coat and Vest; a pair of dark woollen cord Trousers, nearly new ; a pair of white worsted Braces, has ' Kendal' stamped on the leathers; a double- bladed pocket Knife, black and white bone handle, the coat and vest were sold at Lancaster, on 22nd ultimo. By JAMES TAYLOR, 38 years of age, 5 feet 4^ inches high, dark sallow complexion, brown hair, whiskers round chin, and moustache, grey eyes, slender build, oval face, left little finger crooked, and. large sore mark on left shin ; a native of Ireland ; dressed in a black cord jacket, grey tweed vest, may be wearing stolen trousers, black cap with French peak, brass button at each side ; a tailor by trade, may be found rag gathering, is under police supervision, and failed to report himself at Barrow- in- Furness, in February last. Information to be given to Inspector Shields, Police Office, Kendal, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland. — Bow- street, April 10. Stolen in Shrewsbury, by means of housebreaking, on the evening of 7th instant: an old- fashioned silver tea Spoon, engraved ' T. A. L.', chased work on edges of handle; two gold finger Rings, one set with pearls and blue stone in centre, and the other set with pearls only ; a pair of German silver Spectacles ; a bunch of Keys, various sizes ; a large size silk Umbrella, French frame, ivory handle, shape of dog's head ; an oval shape metal Medal; and 14s. in Money. By two men, one about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, red full face, and long sandy moustache ; the other about 43 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers round face, and turning grey ; both were dressed in dark clothes, and high hats. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street, April 10. On 7th instant, about 2 a. m., the Miners' Arms public - house, situated at Glany Pwll, Blaenan, was broken and entered through the window, and a silver lever Watch, which had attached a silver Guard Chain and an old English Guinea and a Half Guinea ; also a bunch of Keys. The burglar left behind him a small bunch of keys. Also on the same date, about 4 a. m., the Offeran Vaults Hotel, Four Crosses, was broken and entered and stolen therefrom : two fancy metal Tea Pots, one larger than the other ; a long double- breasted blue beaver cloth Top Coat, with velvet collar, trimmed with black silk covered buttons, lined with black Italian lining, an outside pocket on left side, and ticket pocket on the right, two pockets outside skirts with flaps on, in one of which there were a pair of driving Gloves, a white Muffler, a white silk Pocket Handkerchief, and several Papers, some relating to the Court of Bankruptcy and Invoices for Goods ; also a pair of light- made clamped watertight laced- up Boots, with brass eyelet holes, worn heavy on one side of heels ; also from 10s. to 12s. in Silver ; and three or four padlock Keys. A short man with soft hat, dressed in dark clothes, was seen in the Offeran Vaults with his face blackened or covered. Stolen by means of burglary between 12 midnight 4th and 6 a. m. on 5th instant, from the house of Mr. Henry Bee, Sutherland House, Cumberland Place : 1 gold hunting Watch, maker ' Woods' on face, crest- Dragon's head, with motto— Industria subscribed. 1 18- carat Albert Chain, round links, Seal attached. 1 gold filigree Brooch, set. with rubies and garnets, with gold Pendant and two small loop Chains atached. 1 red pebble Brooch, with nearly plain gold rim, old- fashioned. 1 silver Brooch, eagle's claw holding- yellow- coloured cairngorm stone, rather large. 2 long old- fashioned gold Watch Chains. 1 Neck Chain for locket. 1 plain silver Locket and Chain. 1 Mourning Ring, with inscription ' In Memory of' in black enamelled ground, with flowers— forget- me- not. 1 gold Ring, with two pearls and a ruby between. 1 of two sets long tortoiseshell Ear- rings inlaid with gold flowers. 1 gold Locket, worked in the middle, and gold Chain. 1 bunch of Keys. Between 30 and 40 Sovereigns. Information to be given to Head Constable Breary, South- ampton, Hants.— Bow- street, April 8. Stolen, by means of burglary, in the Waterloo- Hotel, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a stable at Bromyard, on 2nd instant, t! e property of Mr. Henry Allkins, butcher : a bay cob Horse. 6 years old, between 14 and 15 hands high, has been clipped, lame in near fore foot, has been blistered on foot and near shoulder. By a boy, 15 years of age, 5 feet high, rather slini build ; dressed in a black felt hat, brown cloth jacket, plaid , trousers, wears a scarf round his neck, and no collar. £ 2 reward will be paid to any person giving information that will lead to his apprehension, and recovery of the horse. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Ovens, Police Station, Bromyard, Hei efordshire.— Bow- street, April 12. The three heads of Cattle stolen from Kendal fortnightly fair, advertised in the Police Gazette of 10th instant, have been recovered.— Bow- street, April 12. Further information respecting the Horse stolen from Bolas, Salop, on the night of 19th and advertized in Police Gazette of 22nd ultimo, since recovered, having been sold at Congleton, by a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 ins. high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers ; dressed in black cloth coat, light brown cloth trousers, soft billycock hat, and lace- up boots ; is a little lame, splay footed, and walks with his head down in a stooping position. Supposed to be a collier and a native of Silverdale, booked by 123 train on 20th ult. from Congloton to Newcastle. Information to, 1> 3 given to Mr. Superintendent Haines,. Whitmarsh, - jx1 to Sergeant Owen, Wem, Salop.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen from the stable at Much Hoole Rectoiy, during the night of 7th instant: a dun- coloured Pony, 13 hands high, 5 years old, in good condition, both hind feet white, dark- coloured moutli and fore legs, saddle mark on back, and mane hangs on the wrong side ; a set of new silver- mounted Harness, with kicking strap, and monogram ' R. K. B.' Also stolen from a farm in the neighbourhood, the same night: a Shandray, with plain shaft ends. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Beetham, Chorley, Lancashire.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen on the night of 19th ultimo, from a stable at Little Bolas, Hodnet, Salop, a grey hack Mare, aged, 15 hands high, both knees broken, and fired on hind legs, by JOSEPH GRINDLEY, who is 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers ; dressed in black cloth coat, light brown cloth trousers, and soft billycock hat, walks with head down in stooping position, and is splay footed. Stated that he came from Madeley Mills, but is sup" posed to belong to Silverdale, Staffordshire, as he lias been frequently seen there, and can be identified. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Haines, Whitchureh, or to Sergeant Galliers, Police Station, Market Drayton, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street April 8. Stolen from the New Inn, Wolverhampton, on Cth inst. : a_ valuable iron- grey Horse, 0 years old,' about 15£ hands high, very rough coat, star on forehead," camel back, bang tail, and in good condition, value £ 60 to £ 80; a Gig, black body and wheels, white lines, blue cloth Cushions, and three steps on each side ; and silver plated Harness. By a man, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches hwh, clean shaved ; dressed in brown overcoat, plaid trousers, and black silk hat. He was seen in company with another man at about 1 p. m. the same day, driving in the direction of Shifnal, Salop. Further particulars respecting the Horse, Cart, and Harness stolen from Bedhill, advertised in the Police Gazette of 27th ultimo : one of the sets of Harness was a chaise set nearly new, silver mounted, with the initials ' E. L.' on the same, one of the other sets hadfehains on the end of the reins • the Horse has a hole in one of his hind hoofs ; and the Cart is a small tradesman's mahogany, one panel painted dark green, with a white line, one new shaft, and one shaft much larger than the other, ' Edward Lambert' on the off shaft Supposed by two men : one about 30 years of age, about o feeo 7 inches high, dark complexion and whiskers ; dressed m dark clothes. The other about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, and cle'an shaved • dressed in dark clothes. One of them had high hat, and bo-. h had the appearance of horse dealers. Charged oil a warrant with stealing a silver Geneva Watch, the property of • James Trenfield, at Westbromwich, on 31st ultimo: JOHN REYNOLDS, a whitesmith, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, deeply pock- marked, and high cheek bones ; dressed in black cloth jacket, and vest, dark cloth trousers, patched at both knees, and much worn ; he has formerly been employed at Stourbridge and Dudley. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Christopher Morris, Esq., of Upton, near Chester, on 6th instant: £ 10 in Money. 1 set of pearl amethysts, set in gold, Brooch, Ear- rings, Necklace, and Pendant. 1 set of pink topaz, Broocli, Ear- rings, Necklace, and Cross, very old- fashioned, stones in cross hot quite so large. 1 yellow amethyst pearl Cross and Ear- rings, set in gold. 1 gold Watch Chaiu and Locket, with black enamel cross. 1 gold Bracelet, with pink coral. 1 ditto, with blue enamel and pearls. 1 ditto, with pearls. 1 large cameo Brooch, set in gold. 1 gold link Bracelet, with heart podlock. 1 green malachite and cameo Brooch and Ear- rings. 1 small gold Brooch, tie with turquoises. 1 gold Locket, set with turquoises. 1 small gold Brooch, with dark blue enamel. 2 Guineas, one Spade. 1 gold and diamond set, Brooch and Ear- rings. 1 Necklace with five Lockets. 1 Bracelet, cameo and gold set. 1 Brooch, Ear- rings, ani Bracelet. 1 gold Bracelet, broad band, with lock, set with blue enamel and small diamonds. 1 large diamond Stud, value £ 80. 3 pearl Studs. 3 amethyst Studs. All the above silver Plate bears the crest and motto of a lion in circle, and motto round rim ' Scuto Fider.' By GEORGE OLIVER, a butler, 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, medium build, dark brown or auburn hair, parted in centre, dark sandy whiskers, chin and top lip shaved, ruddy complexion, small grey eyes, nose rather inclined to be pug, has a quiet way of speaking, can speak French fluently, walks with a quick step, respectable appear- ance ; supposed to be wearing dark clothes, said to be a native of Windsor, and to have an uncle named Holden, a builder, at Camden Town, London ; is fond of gambling, and may attend race meetings. A reward of £ 20 will be given for the apprehension of the offender, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the property recovered. Information to be given to Inspector Williamson, County Police Office, Chester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., April 12. Absconded, charged with larceny : JESSE PAULEY, late coachman to Dr. Sankey, of Maidstone : about 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, long features, dark hair and whiskers, and slight build; he has served in the army, is known at Deptford and Woolwich, and is likely to be found engaged as a helper at one of the mews at the West end of London. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen about 7' 30 p. m. on 4th instant, from the hall at St. James's Vicarage, Tunbridge Wells: an Overcoat ( found sold). By a man who called there for the purpose of obtaining assistance, and produced a good- character certificate signed by a clergyman, he is 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair hair and whiskers, is very polite and plausible, has been a servant, and said his name was JOSEPH FRANCIS DIXON, and that he is a native of Plymouth; dressed in shabby dark clothes. Information to be given at the Police Office, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen between 10 p. m. 6th and 4 a. m. on 7th instant, from a cart house at the Bank, Mainstone, Montgomeryshire, the property of Mr. Edward Price : four Sheepskins and an old Bag, two of the skins are pitch marked ' E. P.' on left side, near the hip, and behind the right shoulder, the mark been placed sideways, a spot of raddle on the centre of back, half tailed, the other two are yearlings and have never been shorn, the wool is a dark colour from fly powder, pitch marked ' E. P.' on rump, the left ear is torn off" one, and also torn on left side near the tail by a dog, the one with the ear tore off has a half tail, the othor a short tail. Information to be given to Chief Constable Danily, Newtown, or to Police Constable Breeze, Churchstoke, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, April 10. Description of JOHN WEDLAKE, alias JOHN WED- LOCK, alias GEORGE DOSWELL, described in Police Gazette, on 29th ultimo, as GEORGE DOSWELL, a deserter from the Royal Marines, Plymouth Division, born at North Taunton, Devon : his proper name is JOHN WEDLAKE, a native of Sampford Courtnay, Devon, labourer. Is supposed to have committed three acts of felony on Tuesday, 26th ult., at Okehampton and Sampford Courtnay, by stealing wearing apparel, two Coats, since recovered, still missing a dark mixture cloth round cut loose back Coat, pockets outside, no flaps ; daxk cloth Trousers; a pair of light lace- up nailed Boots ; a black billycock Hat; a grey calico Shirt, nearly new ; and a pair of Stockings. The property missing was stolen from his father's house, Bewmead Farm, Sampford Courtnay, during the absence of the family. A military Shirt was afterwards found near the house, marked in the collar ' Geo. Doswell.' He is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6£ inches high, fair complexion, stout build, brown hair, blue eyes, and is likely to be wearing the stolen articles. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hasted, N Division, Devon Constabulary, Bow.— Bow- st., April 8. Stolen between 4 and 5 p m., on 4th instant, from the house of Robert Hesketh, Esq., ' the Mount,' Earlswood Common, Reigate : 2 men's nearly new ulster Coats, one black cloth, with two rows of buttons down the front, the other a brown cloth, with only one row of buttons. Supposed by two young men, dressed respectably in dark clothes, one had a hard felt hat under his arm. They were seen running away from the house by the under gardener, and they were after- wards seen at Reigate enquiring their way to London. They were also traced to Tadworth Gate, near Banstead, between 9 and 10 p. m. the same evening. Also stolen between 10 a. m. and 3T5 p. m. on 6th instant, from the drawing room of Thomas P. Biggwither, Esq., Furze- hill, Redhill : a small brass travelling Clock, 5 inches high, glass sides, glass door at backto open, and a brass Key ; ajClock, 3 inches high, 3 inches deep, white face beneath glass, brass handle at the top. Supposed by a man, 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, cut very close to face ; dressed in an old dark rusty black coat; hawking shirt buttons. Information to be given to Head Constable Rogers, Police Station, Redhill, Surrey.— Bow- street, April 8. Absconded on 2nd instant, from 42, Holywell- street, Strand, embezzling 14s. : a youth, late of 37, East- street, Foundling Hospital, 14 years of age, 4 feet 9 inches high, very fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes ; dressed in light tweed coat, dark trousers, and black felt hat.— Metropo litan Police, E Division, April 8. Further information respecting JAMES PARKER, alias JAMES PRICE, advertised in the Police Gazette of 20th March last, for attempting to commit a rape on Ennice Burgnall, at Allensmore on 17th March : he is about 36 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, slightly pockpitted, brown hair, tuft of sandy hair on chin, tattooed on arms, and ' J. P.' on one wrist; dressed in dark coat and vest, moleskin trousers, black stable cap, and strong boots, had a pair of dark trousers and dirty slop which he carried in a red hand- kerchief with him. JAMES PARKINSON, Reg. No. Y 288, convicted at Salford Hundred Sessions, 27th May, 1872, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and 7 years supervision for larceny from the person, and was discharged from Millbank Convict Prison, 26th October, 1877 : he is 37 years of age, 5 feet H inches high, greyish hair, brown eyes, sallow complexion, cnt on and over right eyebrow, mole on left arm, cut above left eyebrow, scar back of neck, scar on front of each leg, body covered with small white marks ; by trade a butcher. No. Y 1317, a convict on license; convicted at Leeds on 21st March, 1872, of burglary, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude and 5 years police super- vision, and was discharged on license from Portsmouth Convict Prison on 8th September last : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, scar on back, several small scars on body, and slightly pock- marked. No. U 99, convicted at Preston Sessions on 8th April, 1868, for breaking into a counting- house, and sentenced to 10 years penal servitude, and was discharged from Chatham Convict Prison on 5th Jan., 1876 : he is 33 years of age, 5 feet 6i inches high, brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, cut each side of " forehead, small scar below left eye and on left arm, four scars on belly, scar on left side and bottom of back, two scars back of neck, five on back of head and one front of head, large scar on chin, and lost two teeth. No. Y 1404, convicted at Salford Sessions 27th May, 1872, for obtaining money by false pretences, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision, was discharged from Parkhurst Convict Prison, 10th October, 1877 : he is 45 years of age, 5 feet 6| inches high, grey hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, lost right arm, anchor tattooed on left arm, scar inside left leg. CHRISTOPHER HUNT, Reg. No. Y 883, convicted at Dorchester Sessions, 9th April, 1872, for larceny, and sen- tenced to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years supervision, and was discharged from Chatham Convict Prison, on 21st Sept., 1877 : he is 32 years of age, 5 feet 4| inches high, light sandy hair, grey eyes, fair complexion, mole left arm, ' D.' on left breast, and several moles on back. JOSEPH TAYLOR, alias GEORGE WRIGHT, 22 years of age, 5 feet inches high, brown hair, haael eyes, sallow complexion, painter by trade ; he was convicted at the Hull Sessions, on 19th October, 1876, and sentenced to 15 months imprisonment and 12 months supervision. JOHN McCANN, alias McGAWN, 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, black curly liair, brown eyes, dark complexion, is a labourer, has a scar right side of forehead, and two scars back of neck ; he was convicted at the Leeds Borough Sessions, on 6th April, 1876, and sentenced to 15 months imprisonment, and 5 years supervision.
