POLICE Statftoritg. CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and A ccessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6125 MONDAY, APRIL 8, 1878. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information" respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be maae and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to tho Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AID MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. The dead body of a newly- born male child was found on the Great Western Railway, near the Dartmouth Street Bridge, at West Bromwich, on 7th instant, and a coroner's jury having returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who sha 1 give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give,, such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to * be given to Chief Constable Congreve, Stafford.— Bow- street, March 27. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Whereas, on the night of 9tli ultimo, some person or per- ssns did feloniously and maliciously set on Eire a large Hay Rick and a Straw Rick ; the property of Mr. G. D. Temple- inan, Chiselborough, Somerset. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by the Earl of Ilchester, and £ t0 by the West of England Insurance Company, ia addition to the sum of £ 50 previously offered by Her Majesty's Government to any per- son who will give such information and evidei ce as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or - offenders ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Depart- ment will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually set the ricks on fire, who will give such evidence as shall lead to the like results. HUMPHREYS, charged with obtaining Money by means of a forged cheque : he is about :,*} 0 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, • dissipated look, light moustache, and stout build ; dressed iu black frock open coat, black vest and trousers, high silk hat, with mourning band ; has travelled for the firm of Hogarth and Co., London, with samples of fancy jars of jam. Superintendent Blake, Berks Con- stabulary, Clewer, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. -— Bow- street, April 5. came from Wolverhampton, and was going to Leek, Stafford- shire, where he had some friends residing. Stolen from the person, at Baschurch Steeple Chases, on 2nd instant : a gold hunter Watch, No. 52734, ' E. W. W.' engraved on case ; a gold hunter Watch, maker— Vieyen; a silver hunter Watch, maker-— Frodsham, London, ' E. G. Z.' engraved on case. Stolen from the person at Aintree Races, on 28th and 29th ultimo : a silver patent lever stop Watch, cream- coloured dial, gold hands, back of outer case very much worn ; a silver lever Watch, open- face, white dial, gold hands and hinges, ' J. Tindale' engra'ved on dome ; a large strong metal case Watch, thick glass, belonging to the Liverpool Corporation Water Works, has, engraved oh back ' L. C. W. W. No. 3'; a silver lever hunting Watch, white dial, maker J. Dennett, Huyton, supposed No. 281 ; a gold centre seconds Watch, tho back of which has been,. repaired, cream- coloured dial, sunk seconds, makers name Thomas Wheeler, Preston. Remanded at Portsmouth nnt. il 6th instant, charged with picking pockets in church, during a confirmation service : EDWARD FORD, ( name supposed fictitious), about 22 yeais of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, brown hair, hazel eyes, small mouse- colour moustache, pale ( oval) face, deep scar on right shoulder, one about 2 inches long on left forearm, aud smaller scars on forehead, left eyebrow, pell, left side of neck, and close to left elbow joint, and large mole on left rump ; dressed in black felt hat, black figured silk liecktis, dark blue corded suit, ' Kino, High Horborn' maker, and elastic- side boots ; he is smart and active, of respectable appearance, and states he is a waiter, and a native of Liverpool. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jervis, Portsmouth, Hants.— Bow- street, April 3. Stolen from the person at Preston, on 1st instant : a silver centre seconds chronograph Watch, No. 33437; also a silver verge Watch, old fashioned, No. 3065, had attached a plated Albert Guard and Locket, had the name ' William Dewhurst' engraved on the case. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, April 3. Stolen from the person on the Race Course, at Bishoper, near Malmesbury; on 26th instant; the property of Mr. C. Cave, of Bristol : a gold Watch, No. 35766, makers' name John T. Peters & Co., Bristol. Also stolen ; the property of E. A. Miles, Esq., of Malmes- bury : an aluminium Watch, maker ' Kibble, London.' Stolen from the person of an Eton student, ou the Windsor Race Course, on 2nd instant: an English made silver half hunter Watch. Stolen from the person at Uttoxeter Steeple Chase, on 1st instant: a lady's gold lever Watch, No. 64846, maker Isaac Cohen, value £ 10. Stolen from the person of George Barker, on 28th ult., while in a stable at Hatton, Derbyshire : a brown leather Purse, with elastic band, and 8s. in Silver. By a man about - 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy hair, no whiskers • or moustache, and ordinary build ; dressed in dark brown 4ouble- breasted cloth coat, light- coloured cloth trousers, patched at bottoms, and hard felt hat; he stated that he BURGLARY AID HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of burglary between 12 midnight 4tli and 6 a. m. on 5th instant, from the house of Mr. Henry Bee, Sutherland House, Cumberland Place : 1 gold hunting Watch, maker ' Woods ' oil face, crest- Dragon's head, with motto — Industria subscribed. 1 18- carat Albert Chain, round links, Seal attached. 1 gold filigree Brooch, sot with rubies and garnets, with gold Pendant aud two small loop Chains atached. 1 red pebble Brooch, with nearly plain gold rim, old- fashioned. 1 silver Brooch, eagle's claw holding yellow- coloured cairngorm stone, rather large. 2 long old- fashioned gold Watch Chains. 1 Necfk Chain for locket. 1 plain silver Locket and Chain. 1 Mourning Ring, with inscription 1 In Memory of' in black enamelled ground, with fiowers— forget- me- not. 1 gold Ring, with two pearls and a ruby between. 1 of two sets long tortoiseshell Ear- rings inlaid with gold flowers. 1 gold Locket, worked in the middle, and gold Chain. 1 bunch of Keys. Stolen, by means of burglary, in the Waterloo Hotel, Sandhurst, Berks, on the night of 2iid instant : a dark brown fur Coat, lined with light fur, the collar and cuffs of dark brown beaver; a light summer Great Coat, lined with silk ; a Great Coat, a good deal worn, but with a nearly new velvet collar; a reversible Mackintosh, of very light texture ; a soft felt- Hat with rather a broad brim; and four wooden and one Meerschaum Pipe. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Millard, County Police Station, Woking- ham, Berks.— Bow- street, April 5. During the night of 30th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. Robert Carrick, of Sutton, York, was burglariously entered, and stolen therein : a blue pilot Coat, velvet collar, and silk front, torn on the left hand pocket ; a grey Coat and Vest, much worn ; a pepper- and- salt Coat and Vest; and a pair of strong half Boots, with three rows of round- headed nails in the centre, two rows on the outside, and square- headed nails in the heels. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gibson, Sproatly, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, April 3. Remanded to Appleby Gaol, until 2nd instant, upon a charge of burglary of Silver Plate, on the night of 23rd ultimo, at Bongate Hall: VALENTINE SCAMEL, 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, light coloured whiskers and moustache, slender figure, mark of a stab below nipple, and anchor on left arm ; dressed in black soft billycock hat, blue pilst great coat, velvet collar, one pocket left breast, two pockets right side, one left side, with flaps, grey tweed jacket, sack back, three outside pockets set on outside, horn buttons white in centre, rough brown single- breasted vest, light grey rough tweed trousers, pockets in seams, common horn buttons, half water- tight boots, tartan scarf, blue and white stripe winsey shirt. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Spencer, Constabulary Office, Appleby, or at the County Chief Constables Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, April 1. Stolen by means of burglary, on 27th ultimo, from the dwelling- house of C. W. Dawes, Esq., Burton : a silver Inkstand, with taper; a silver lamp inkstand ; an electro- plated large Salt Cellar ; a silver- gilt Snuff Box ; enamel do. with miniature; bloodstone do. ; and two silver tops of Seals. Supposed by two men who took train at Horsham the same morning for London Bridge, one is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, pale complexion, dark moustache and whiskers, cut short; dressed in long dark coat and trousers, and soft felt hat. The other is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, moustache, and whiskers ; dressed in long dark coat and trousers, and hard felt hat. Can be identified. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Kemmish, West Sussex Constabulary, Petwortli. — Bow- street, April 1. Stolen, by means of burglary, between 10 p. m. 26th, and 5 a. m. on 27th ultimo, from Mistley- place, Manningtree : a silver Inkstand, on four feet, inscribed ' Presented to the Revd. C. F. Norman on his resigning the Rectorship of Portishead in 1867'; a large quantity t> f ' Italian pieces of Money, like sixpences, with the image of tho late Pope ; a silver Flower Vase ; a Norman school. M** ial; a large gold Sea', with owl crest, initials ' W. II: N.' ; a large gold Seal, with crest dove and olive branch, and coat of arms ; an old gold wedding Ring,; £ 800 in Promissory Notes, the amounts averaging from £ 250 to £ 2 10s., payable to the Reverend C. F. Norman ; 10 new Sovereigns ; £ 5 in Silver Monies ; and a Mordaunt's patent tubular Key of iron safe. During the night of 18th instant, the rectory at Bils- thorpe, wais broken into, and stolen therein: a gold lever Watch, open- face, engraved dial, |- plate, duplex. No. 2592, maker Jas. Murray, with crest and the motto ' Tria junctainuno' on centre of back ; an old- fashioned silver hunter Watch, with white dial; a gold* and green paper Knife? a small square malachite Stamp Box, with Queen's head on lid ; the under- mentioned articles are all silver: Vinegarette, marked L. H. E.' ; Cruet for six bottles ; the Tops of the bottles ; Top of mustard pot and Spoon, sugar Tongs ; large gravy Spoon ; five table Spoons; one dessert Spoon ; nine tea Spoons ; two salt Spoons ; and four table Forks, all marked E. W. G.' ; two table Spoons; one dessert Spoon ; one mustard Spoon ; two salt Spoons ; and four table Forks, all marked with crest— lion rampant aud a branch iu paw; an egg Spoon, marked ' M. E.'; an old tea Spoon, marked ' S. T.'; and two sauce Ladles; oue electro sugar Basin; one large white linen Apron ; £ 2 in Money; a half- pint silver Cup, engraved ' Edward William Garrow,' and a small inscription; and two white cambric Handkerchiefs, edged with lace, marked ' G. R.' with red cotton. A reward of £ 20 will be given by the Rev. E. W. Garrow to any . person who will give such information tbat will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders aud recovery of the property, or in proportion to any part recovered. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hallam, Newark, or to Inspector Earp, Southwell, Notts.- Bow- street, March 29. HOUSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the night of 19 th iiltimo, from a stable at Litt'e Bolas, Hodnet, Salop, a grey hack Mare, aged, 15 hands high, both knees broken, and fired on hind legs, by JOSEPH GRINDLEY, who is 30 years of age, 5 feet 0 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers ; dressed in black cloth coat, light brown cloth trousers, aud soft billycock hat, walks with head down in stooping position, and is splay footed. Stated that he came from Madeley Mills, but is sup- posed to belong to Silverdale, Staffordshire, as he has been frequently seen there, and can be identified. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent, Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Galliers, Police Station, Market Drayton, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 8. Stolen from the New Inn, Wolverhampton, on 6th inst. : a valuable iron- grey Horse, 6 years old, about 15J hands high, very rough coat, star on forehead, camel back, bang tail, and in good condition, value £ 60 to £ 80; a Gig, black body and wheels, white lines, blue cloth Cushions, and three steps on each side; and silver plated Harness. By a man, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, clean shaved; dressed in brown overcoat, plaid trousers, and black silk hat. He was seen in company with another man at about 1 p. m. the same day, driving in* the direction of Shifnal, Salop. Stolen from a stable at Bromyard, on 2nd instant, the property of Mr. Henry Allkins, butcher : a bay cob Horse, 6 years old, between 14 and 15 hands high, lias been' clipped, lame in near fore foot, has been blistered on foot and near shoulder. By a y6ung man, 15 years of age, 5 feet high, rather slim built, and was dressed in a round stable jacket. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Ovens, Pslice Station, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, April 5. Further particulars respecting the Horse, Cart, and Harness stolen from Redhill, advertised in the Police Gazette of 27th ultimo : one of the sets of Harness was a chaise set, nearly new, silver mounted, with the initials ' E. L.' on the same, one of the other sets hadfehains on the end of the reins ; the Horse has a hole in one of liis hind hoofs ; and the Cart is a small tradesman's mahogany, one panel painted dark green, with a white line, one new shaft, and one shaft much larger than the other, ' Edward Lambert' on the off shaft. Supposed by two men : one about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion and whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes. The other about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, and clean shaved ; dressed in dark clothes. One of them had high hat, and both had the appearance of horse dealers. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Rogers, Redhill, Surrey .^ Bow- street, April 5. Stolen between 10- 45 p. m. 27th and 2 a. m. 28th ultimo, from a stable at Mansion- house- street, Lambeth : a light chesnut horse Pony, aged, 13i hands high, star on forehead fcaees slightly chipped, hair rubbed off on upper part of tail, and mane cut very short ; a light Spring Cart, painted dark green, picked out with light green, open work on aides and back; and a set of brass mounted Harness. Supposed by the carman, 33 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair . and complexion ; dressed in brown overcoat, dark cloth trou- sers, side- spring boots, and hard felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, L Division, April 1. Stolen at 6' 30 p. m. 21st ultimo, from Bedford- place. Bloomsbury: a dun colour mare Pony, and a Cart painted green, and slate coloured wheels, ' Felix Bourdon. 58, King's- road, Saint Pancras,' on shaft.— Metropolitan Police. E Division, April 1. Stolen from a field adjoining the highway, leading from Knockiu to Maesbrook, on the night of 28th ultimo : a fat Shropshire Down yearling Sheep, marked letter ' L.' on one side, and recently burled, the property of Mr. R. Loyd, farmer, Knockin. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, or to Sergeant Barratt, Kinnerley, Shrop shire.— Bow- street, April 1. LARCEIY AID EMBEZZLEMENT, JAMES KEDDIE, advertised in the Police Gazette of 27th ultimo, and subsequent dates, charged with embezzle- ment, has been apprehended in Scotland, and is remand Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Bennett. Berks Constabulary, Newbury.— Bow- street, April 8. Description of JOHN WEDLAKE, alias JOHN WED LOCK, alias GEORGE DOSWELL, described in Police Gazette, on 29th ultimo, as GEORGE DOSWELL, a deserter from the Royal Marines, Plymouth Division, born at North Taunton, Devon : his proper name is JOHN WEDLAKE, a native ot Sampford Courtnay, Devon, labourer. Is supposed to have committed three acts of felony on Tuesday, 20th ult, at Okehampton and Sampford Courtnay, by stealing wearing apparel, two Coats, since recovered, still missing a darl mixture cloth round cut loose back Coat, pockets outside, no Caps ; dark cloth. Trousers ; a pair of light lace- up nailed Boots ; a black billycock Hat; a grey calico Shirt, nearly new ; and a pair of Stockings. The property missing was stolen from his father's house, Bewniead Farm, Sampford Courtnay, dining the absence of the family. A military Shirt was afterwards found near the house, marked in the collar ' Geo. DoswelV He is about 20 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, stout build, brown hair, blue eyes, and is likely to be wearing the stolen articles. Infor mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hasted, N Division, Devon Constabulary, Bo'vv.— Bow- st., April 8. Stolen between 4 and 5 p m., on 4th instant, from the house of Robert Hesketh, Esq., ' the Mount,' Earlswood Common, Reigate : 2 men's nearly new ulster Coats, one black • cloth, with two rows of buttons down the front, the oilier brown cloth, with only one row of buttons, Supposed by two young men, dressed respectably in dark clothes, one had liard felt bat under his arm. They were seen running away from the house by the under gardener, and they were after wards seen at Reigate enquiring their way to London. They were also traced to Tadworth Gate, near Banstead, between i) and 10 p. m. the same evening. Also stolen between 10 a. m. and 3T5 p. m. on 6th instant, from the drawing room of Thomas P. Biggwither, Esq. Furze- hill, Redhill a small brass travelling Clock, 5 ineht high, gla:-" s sides, glass door at back to open, and a brass Key j. fCloek, 3 in shea high, 3 inches deep, white face beneath glass, brass handle at the top. Supposed by a man, 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, cut very close to face ; dressed in an old dark rusty black coat; hawking shirt buttons. Information to be given to Head Constable Rogers, Police Station, Redhill, Surrey.— jBow- street, April 8. Absconded on 2nd instant, from 42, Holywell- street Strand, embezzling 14s. : a youth, late of 37, East- street, Foundling Hospital, 14 years of age, 4 feet 9 inches high, very fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes ; dressed in light tweed coat, dark trousers, and black felt liat.— Metropo- litan Police, E Division, April 8. Absconded, charged with larceny : CLEMENT ALLEN, clerk, 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, dar- v hair, cut short, parted in centre, slight dark moustache, and scar on bridge of nose; dressed in dark blue overcvat. dark cutaway under do., dark trousers, high hat, low shoes, square toss. Stout military appearance, and may emigrate. Warrant issue^ i. Information to be given to Mr. Superinten- dent Williamson, Detective Department, Great Scotland Yard .- Bow- street, April 5. Description of a man who absconded from Ms lodgings in Winkle- street, West Bromwich, on 31st ultimo, stealing a silver Geneva Watch, the property of James Trentfield : lie is 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, dark eyes, high chesk bones, deeply pockpitted on the face ; he is a blacksmith by trade ; dressed in black cloth jacket and vest, striped trousers, patched on both knees, and black velvet cap Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Woollaston, West Bromwich, or to Sergeant Smith, Greets Green, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, 1pril 5. Description of ANNIE PRITCHARD who absconded from Slioreham, Sussex, on 23rd ultimo, charged cn a warrant with stealing from her lodgings : a silver verge Watch ; a jold Chain, cylinder pattern; a gold mourning ring, monogram— an open book ; a pair of jet Bracelets, a piece of black Silk, and a small quantity of white Lace. She is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 3$ inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, worn plain; dressed in a black felt hat, black feather, black dress, heavily trimmed with black velvet, and brown ulster. Had in her possession a new grey costume, a black alpaca dress, two new dark cloth jackets, and a black bonnet trimmed with crape. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Parnell, West Sussex Constabulary, Steyning, or to Sergeant Denman, Siioreham.— Bow- street, April 3. He is now supposed to be in that locality, he did belong- a few months since to the Engineer Volunteers in the City of Loudon. He stated he left Preston to attend training with the 2nd Royal Cheshire Militia, at Macclesfield, and that his parents resided in Hyde- road, near the Plough Inn, Gorton, near Manchester..
