Police.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sanding the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, aS3 I. etJcrs addressed to the Editor ailUSt he prepaid, otherwise tlic insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from tlic Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and S8A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AID MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Whereas tlie dead body of a newly- born female Child was found in the Birmingham Canal at Heath- town, near Wolverhampton, on 21st instant, and a Coroner's jury having returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown,' £ 50 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person other than a police officer who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accom- plice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give audi evidence aa shall lead to a like result. Information to be given at any Police Station in Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 30. Whereas, during tlie niglit of 7tli inst., Samuel Bowater, a colliery watchman, was murdered in a hovel at Black Wagon Colliery, at Old Hill, parish of Rowley Regis, and a coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' Wanted at Middlesborough, on a charge of assault and robbery : a man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, turning grey, no • whiskers or moustache, slender figure, and walks ericf; dresse 1 when last seen in a light grey coat, white duck jacket undemeath, dark vest, dirty moleskin trousers, piped up erc'i side, strong laced boots, and flat skull cap ; he is accompanied • by a womsn about 20 years of age, who has a child alout 5 months old ; he has been a soldier, and has lodged in Black Bull- yard, at Stockton- on- Tees, may be found in some common lodging- house. Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, Feb. 4. 1 cotton Coat, checked blue and white heavy cloth, lined with stone coloured silk, stone coloured bone buttons, two inside pockets and two outside pockets with flaps, and one ticket pocket. 1 cotton Vest, same as coat. 1 wliite linen Handkerchief, marked ' J. Nicoll.' 1 gentleman's dark green silk Umbrella, with straight handle. I black felt Hat, flat top, maker Christie, London. I dark grey cloth Hat, all in good condition. 1 briar root Pipe, white bone mouth piece, ' G. B. D.' on shank. 1 double folding India- rubber Tobacco Pouch. 1 pair of woman's plain wliite worsted Stocking,?. 2 £ 1 Bank of Scotland Notes. And 10s. in Silver. By WILLIAM YOUNG, alias FRASER, alias GILROY, about 24 years of age, 5 feet ( iy inches high, brown wavy liair, parted in tlie centre, slight moustache, no whiskers, blue eyes, fresh complexion, long full face, scar on forehead, and weighs llJ? stones ; may be dressed in part of tlie stolen clothes, or a suit of check tweed. Was liberated from Perth Penitentiary on 21st December, 1S77, after 15 months imprisonment for various housebreakings in Renfrewshire. I Stated that he was born in Glasgow, but spent most of liis life in London, as a waiter in hotels. Ilis photograph may be liad. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Taylor, Court House Buildings, Dundee, wlio holds a Sheriff's warrant for liis apprehension, or to tlie Chief Constable of of Forfarshire at Forfar.— Bou>- street, January 28. Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of 22nd instant, from the dwelling- house of James Davis, labourer, of Mathon, county of Worcester : a pair Of man's strong lace- up Boots, with tip lost from right boot heel ; a small yellow Box, 4 inches wide, 2! inches deep, and 8 inches long, con- taining £ 1 12s. 6d. in Silver, and two Half- sovereigns in Gold, a small black picture on top of box, marked in pencil ' Langlingdon Bay,' also the words written on it ' A gift of Miss Gauncy Hallings Hills, Mathdrf.' Supposed by a man about 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high ; dressed in a suit of dirty cotton cord ; lie had the appearance of a tramping blacksmith, lie was carrying a frail, such as men of that class usually cany their tools in, was seen in the neighbourhood a few days previous, in company with a woman and two children. ' Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Turner, Upton- on- Severn, or to Inspector Jeffre}-, Malvern, Worcestershire. — Bow- street, January 28. Between 10 p. m. on 22nd and 6 a. m. 23rd instant, the dwelling- house of the " Rev. W. H. Plummer, at Fleet, in Crondall, was burglariously broken and entered and stolen therein : a small solid silver Inkstand, oblong in shape, with two glasses, having silver covers, and centre silver taper holder, the initials ' W. H. C. P.' ( interlaced) engraved on the central box ; two pairs of ladies Scissors, one pair has the tip of one blade broken off; a pair of silver- framed Spectacles ; two small Worcestershire cream- coloured China Vases, peculiar enamel beading border round top, feathers painted in centre, gold band, with white raised beads near top ; three Anti- macassars, oire of rich crimson and white wool, large loose raised pattern in red stripe, one white cotton crochet, and one white cotton, made up in squares, with a deep border round only three sides; an ivory Paper Knife, handsomely cut handle, with a spot of ink on the blade ; a green velvet Sketch Book, small vignette on one. cover, about 5 by 3 inches ; two magnifying Glasses, black handles, glasses about 3 and 4 ins. respectively in diameter, brass bound ; and an old- fashioned little Bodkin Case, white, with Bodkins and Needles in it. Information to be given lo Mr. Superintendent Stephenson, County Police Station, Aldershot, Hants.— Bow- st., Jan. 28. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen between 7 and 11 p. m. on 1st instant, from a . stable at Metchley- lane, Harborne, Birmingham : a bright bay Gelding, in good condition, rising 3 years old, about 14 hands 1 inch high, small star in forehead, and a few grey hairs on top of tail. £ 5 reward will be paid by the owner, Mr. WARWOOD, at the above address, to any pierson who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehen- sion and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the Horse. Information to be given to the Chief of Police, Detective Office, Moor- street, Birmingham, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, February 4. Stolen early on the morning of 24th December last, by means of house- breaking, from a dwelling- house at Fort Hill, in the parish of Monifirth and county of Forfar : 1 gold Watch, recovered. 1 gold guard Chain, small square links, and a plain gold finger Ring attached. 1 black corded cloth Coat, bound round with black silk braid, buttons covered with same cloth, lined with black cotton, and two pockets behind. 1 Vest, of same cloth. 1 pair of light grey cloth Trousers, dark stripe on legs, metal buttons, with ' Wm. Laurie, Dundee,' on them. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Sto'e l or strayed since 23rd instant, from outside No. 8> Carlton - cottages, New Cross - road : a bay entire Pony 13 hands high, face and three legs white, attached to f chocolate coloured Gig, ' Alfred Saunders, Peckham Rye,: painted on site- Metropolitan Police, P Division, January 30, Stolen during the night of 16th instant, from a field at Boswell, in South Ellington : two Hams, one a shearling, marked ' 29' on near side in black pitch, the other an aged ram, rather lame on the two hind feet, a dot of black pitch marked just above the tail, in fair condition ; the property of Mr. Isaac Sharpley, of Boswell. Information to be given to Inspector Smith, County Police Station, Louth, Lincolnshire. — Bow- street, January 28. Found at Margaretting, Essex, on 20th instant, supposed stolen : 2 Cows, one white, with red and white neck, and in calf ; the other a black Welsh, white tail, and gives a little milk. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Lennon, Constabulary Office, Chelmsford, or to Police Con- stable Gallagher, Margaretting, Essex.— Bow- street, Jan. 28. Stolen on the evening of 13th instant, from Ashbourn Green : an aged brown Pony, about 13 hands high, has been fired on off hind leg, the marks of which are visible. A middle aged man was seen taking the Pony away ; he was dressed in a blue or brown overcoat and a black mushy hat, and had a very red face. Iaformation to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Whieldon, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.— Bow- st., Jan. 28. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on 25th ultimo, from Bower's Manor, South- gate- road; Edmonton, charged with larceny from dwelling- house : a man, 44 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, florid complexion, whiskers shaved under cliin, slightly pockmarked, husky voice, and of gentlemanly appearance.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, February 4. Absconded on 28th ultimo, from 24, Wellington- street, Strand, embezzling £ 8. : a youth, 19 years of age, 5 feet high, pale complexion, full round face, and dark brown hair; dressed in grey tweed walking coat, vest and trousers, lace boots, and billycock hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 4. Wanted, charged with larceny : HENRY GASKIN, about 70 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair turning grey. LEWIS LAMB, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light brown hair, thin face, fair complexion, and has lost one eye. Both travel with vans, hawking mats, brushes, brooms, baskets, & c., and deal in old horses. Are well known in Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridge, Huntingdon, and Middlesex. Warrants are issued against both. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Ackers, Braintree, or to Inspector Fox, Castle Hedingham, Essex.— Bow- street, February 4. Stolen on 29th ultimo, from a dwelling- house in Oxford : a silver chronometer lever Watch, made in Coventry No. 7446, capped and jewelled in two holes, with maintaining power ; a lady's silver Geneva Watch, No. 37440 ; a suit of black cloth Clothes, braid round sleeves of coat; a twill silk pocket Handkerchief; a silver pencil Case ; and a small ivory- handled Penknife, with 3 blades. By a lodger who said he was manager for a firm of engineers at Leeds, 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and whiskers, sl- aved on chin, dark eyes, one eyelid drops, has scars raider One ear; dressed in a light grey top coat, black jacket and vest, grey trousers, silk hat witli mourning band. Information to bs given to Mr. Superintendent Head, J? olice Office, Oxforfc— Bow- street, February 4. Stolen from Benjamin Warrender, at Brownhills, on 3rd instant: a dark pilot double- breasted Overcoat, frock coat shape, two pockets in skirts behind, two bone buttons behind, and lined with black corded shining material ; and a light coloured egg Cup, with lilac leaf, containing 8d. in Coppers. By a man, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair curled at end and parted in centre ; dressed in shabby black cloth jacket and vest, black cloth trousers with fly fronts, blue woollen scarf, hard black- liat, lace- up boots with piece cut or worn out at big toe. He walks lame. Said he was an engine tenter, a native of Dark Lanes, near Dawley, Wellington, Salop, served apprenticeship at the Lilleshall Company's engine works, and worked as engine tenter at Ketley Colliery till November last. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 4. Description of two men, charged with stealing a quantity of Oranges, at Helmsley, on the 12th ultimo : JOSEPH FAWCETT, 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, slender figure ; a native of Pickering, Yorkshire, travels the country hawking oranges, and sometimes hardware; dressed in a black cloth coat, black cloth cap, dark cord trousers, and watertight boots. He holds a jtdlar's certificate in the name of JOSEPH TURNER, granted by Mr. Superintendent Spence, Pickering. And SINGING CHARLEY, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, brown hair, no whiskers, fresh complexion, long visage; dressed in grey coat, dirty moleskin trousers, Scotch cap, white rim round the ribbons behind; he frequents public- houses singing and sometimes hawks oranges he is well known at Scarborough, Hull. Bridlington, and Driffield. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Park, Malton, or to Inspector Milner, North Riding Constabulary, Kirby Moorside.— Bow- street, February 4. Description of THOMAS FURBER, charged with stealing, on 21st ultimo, a real dark opossum carriage Rug, value £ 20 ; the property of F. C. Perry, Esq. : about 33 yrs. of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, slight build, light whiskers on each side of face, rather long nose and pockpitted ; walks erect and with a sharp step, and turns his toes outwards ; dressed in cotton cord trousers and vest, no jacket on, lace- up boots, dark cloth cap with peak, worn on right side of head, and is an ostler and a native of Prees, Shropshire. £ 5 reward is offered for the recovery of the Rug and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Sergeant Evans, Cannock, near Stafford, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension,— Bow- street, February 1. Description of SARAH ROBINSON, alias SINEY, who is charged with stealing on 21st December last, at Hopthorpe : a scarlet and black woollen Shawl, with fringe round the edge, and a small hole in the centre. She is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 0J inch high, rather stout build, blue eyes, and grey- hair, very dirty appearance, and dissipated habits! She tramps the country begging, accompanied bv her daughter, 7 years of age. She is a native of Stamford. Information to be given to Inspector Stennett, Police Station, Alford, Lincoln- shire.— Bow- street, February 1. Stolen from a dwelling- house in St. Catherine- street, _ Ventnor, between 9 and IP. 30 a. m. on 30tli ultimo : a lady's gold Geneva open- faced Watch, gold hands, engine- turned fancy back; a lady's long gold neck Chain, square link pattern ; two watch Keys, one gold, the other common; a small gold Pencil- case, with blood- coloured stone attached. Supposed by a man about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, dark brown bushy whiskers, turning grey ; dressed in black or very dark overcoat, and hard round felt hat, and of respectable appearance. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Horan, Hants Constabulary, Newport^ Isle of Wight, or to Sergeant Ransom, Ventnor, Isle of Wight.— Sow- street, February 1. Wanted for larceny in Durham, on 21st ultimo, part of property recovered: DUNCAN SPEIRS, alias JOHN PERRY or PARRY, 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light hair, grey eyes, has two cut scars on right side of forehead, one of them of a light bluish colour, in the shape of V, birth mark on left breast, vaccination scar on left arm, scars on back and buttock, scar on right calf ; is a native of Rutherglen, near Glasgow, has generally worked as a miner or labourer, and has been previously convicted for felony. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Dunn, County Constabulary Office, Durham — Bow- street, Feb. 1. Stolen on 27tli ultimo, from Bridstow, near Ross : a double- cased engine- turned silver Watch, without a glass, maker . Birmingham, with black ribbon and steel Seal attached, and the letter ' E' on the Seal. Also a German- silver Watch, with steel Chain and Key attached. By HENRY LAMBERT, alias WILLIAM DAVIES, alias HODGES, a labourer, and native of Minchinhampton, near Stroud ; he is about 16 years of age, 5 feet high, stout build, round face, brown hair, and scar on forehead ; dressed in black short jacket, brown vest, cord trousers, worn at knees, and patched at the bottoms,. strong boots with tips on toes and heels, black round hard bowler hat, and red cravat. He was traced to Cinclerford in the Forest of Dean, where he was seen with the two Watches in bis possession. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Smith, Ross, Hereford- shire.— Bow- street, February 1. Description of JAMES BOWLES, charged on a warrant with stealing a silver hunting verge Watch, chased cases; a silver Albert Chain, link pattern, and an English Lion Shilling attached, about 18tli instant ; the property of Charles Pennell, at Sittingbourne ; 18 years of age, a coil maker, and about 5 feet high. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Mayne, Police Court, Sitting- bourne, Kent — Bow- street, January 30. Description of H. G. HARRIS, charged on a warrant with stealing a pair of light striped Trousers ; a very dark mixture heavy tweed Coat, with pockets in front and breast, and Vest to match; and soft black felt Hat, the property of Alfred Foster: lie is about 18 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, tattooed on wrists with cross flags and wreath ; dressed in stolen articles, with flannel shirt, worsted socks, low shoes, black silk scarf round his neck, and a blue muffler. He is an absentee from H. M. S. Boscawen, shirt and socks probably would be marked ' H. G. Harris. 1 Previous to his joining the Navy, he was a billiard marker. Information to be given to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Office, Guildhall, Dorchester, Dorset, • who holds a " warrant for liis apprehension.— Bow- street, January 30. Absconded on 23rd instant, charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 17, the monies of his employer : ANDREW JAMES, late groom to Miles Pestell, horse dealer, Cold Highani, 22 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, blue eyes; dressed in hard billy hat, grey tweed jacket and vest, tightly- titting cotton cord trousers, muffler round neck, and strong lace- up boots ; lias recently cut the top off left thumb, whick is probably bandaged, and lias served nearly 12 months in the 44th Regiment, from which lie purchased his discharge, has attended various fairs in England and Ireland, assisting in the purchase of horses and their removal from place to place; he is known to the boat authorities at Liverpool Hollyhead, Milford, & c. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Norman, Towcester, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, January 30. Absconded on 29th ultimo, from ICent- green, Odd Rode, charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 50, the monies of liis employers Messrs. Williamson Bros. : JOHN WILLCOCK, clerk, " about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 ov 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, full sandy whiskers and moustache, proportionate build ; supposed to be dressed in dark blue overcoat, velvet collar, grey tweed or brown suit. A reward of £ 20 will be paid for his apprehension. A photo can be had oil application. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or to Sargeant Gosling, Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire.— Bow- street, . Jan. 28. FELONIES. ( Xot otherwise described.) Description of the Rev. FREDERICK DAVIS, late of Manor House, Nortbfleet, Kent, for whose apprehension a warrant has been granted, charged with indecently assaulting Rosina Webb, whilst travelling in a third class carriage on the North Kent Railway, between Strood and Gravesend, on 16th December last: be is about 00 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, broad shoulders, and stout build, very dark complexion, black hair, and few black whiskers on cheek ; dressed as a clergyman, in long black cloth frock coat, broad brimmed hat, and white neckerchief. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Coppinger, Kent County Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, February 4. FRAUBS A STB AGG- RAITATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of JAMES TAYLOR, charged on warrant with wounding a gamekeeper, near Staindrop : lie is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, pale complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, whiskers down the side of face, propor- tionately made, shoulders rather large, and a pitman ; dressed in black cloth coat and vest, grey cloth trousers, black felt hat, and blocker boots, with three eyelet holes on each side. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Thompson, Police Office, Barnard Castle, Durham.— Bow- street, Feb. 4. . Absconded, charged with obtaining money by false pretences : EDMUND LEASK, late of 6, Lambeth- square, 25 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, hair, and moustache; dressed in brown ulster overcoat, brown cloth suit, felt liat, lace boots, of respectable appearance, and is a clerk. Is said to have been seen at Brighton on 26th inst. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, Jan. 30. Description of JOHN DUNN, absconded, charged with obtaining by false pretences from Mr. William Smith, at Knutsford, on 23rd instant : a black cloth double- breasted dress Coat, a velvet Vest, a pair of black cloth Trousers, all part worn ; and ^^ Walking- stick. He is 46 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, dark bushy whiskers and moustache, turning grey, male and female figure on right arm, letter D on left breast; dressed in soft felt billycock hat, broad brim, and above clothes. Was convicted at Stockport on 21st July last, for obtaining money by a trick, and sentenced to six calendar months and two days hard labour, was released from Knutsford Gaol, on 23rd instant; supposed served in 3rd Dragoon Guards. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Aston, Altrincham, or to Sergeant Oldham, Knutsford, Cheshire,— Bow- street, January 28. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of two men in custody at Kendal, and remanded till 8th instant, on a charge of forging a postal telegram : WILLIAM PILKINGTON, native of Preston, Lancashire, fish hawker, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresli complexion, black hair, clean shaved, brown eyes, scars on both eyebrows and bridge of nose, ' W. P.' and anchor right forearm, blue mark left forearm; dressed in blue cloth overcoat, ribbed fustian trousers and vest, blue checked cap, turned up at sides. Also Articles in the possession of the police ' a cotton Shirt, white and blue stripe; a ditto, small blue plaid ; two white Shirts, worked at bottom ; a black merino Cape, velvet and bead trimmings; three children's white Dresses ; a red silk Scarf ; four pieces of crochet Work for bread basket; a worked Stand for lamp, initials ' J C' ' J. S.', and ' F. M. C.' worked in black beads ; a new Gas Burner ; a long Boot Hook, with horn handle ; a small Pen- knife, white handle ; and a small gold scarf Pin, with red stone. Stolen from Melbourn, Cambs., on the night of 24th instant: a light spring Cart, with moveable seat, painted dark colour picked out with white, iron rod across body, iron dash, near shaft much worn by kicking strap, off shaft mended with two plates. Supposed by two men, apparently horse copers, one about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, large sandy moustache ; dressed in dark brown overcoat, and hard felt hat. The other about 30 years of age. taller than his companion ; dressed in light overcoat, with large buttons, and soft billycock hat. These men were in the neighbourhood on the night of the robbery driving a horse, of medium height, in an old gig with wicker back, body painted black, wheels and shafts painted blue, two felloes broken out of near wheel. He was convicted at Derby on 12th July 1872, and sentenced to seven years penal servitude and seven years police supervision, for burglary, after previous convic- tion of felony.
