C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must Sse prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AIB MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. WRereas the dead body of a newly- born female Child was found in the Birmingham Canal at Heath- town, near Wolverhampton, on 21st instant, and a Coroner's jury having returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some person or persons Unknown,' £ 50 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person other than a police officer who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accom- plice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like, result. Information to- be given at any Police Station in Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 30. Whereas, during the night of 7th inst., Samuel Bowater, a colliery watchman, was murdered in a hovel at Black Wagon Colliery, at Old Hill, parish of Rowley Regis, and a coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of 22nd instant, from the dwelling- house of James Davis, labourer, of Mathon, county of Worcester : a pair of man's strong lace- up Boots, with tip lost from right boot heel ; a small yellow Box, 4 inches wide, 21 inches deep, and 8 inches long, con- taining £ 1 12s. 6d. in Silver, and two Half- sovereigns in Gold, a small black picture on top, of box, marked in pencil ' Langlingdon Bay,' also the words written on it ' A gift of Miss Gauncy Hallings Hills, Mathon.' Supposed by a man about 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high ; dressed in a suit of dirty cotton cord ; he had the appearance of a tramping blacksmith, he was carrying a frail, such as men of that class usually carry their tools in, was seen in the neighbourhood a few days previous, in company with a woman and two children. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Turner, Upton- on- Severn, or to Inspector Jeffrey, Malvern, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, January 28. Between 10 p. m. on 22nd and 6 a. m. 23rd instant, the dwelling- house of the ReV. W. H. Plummer, at Fleet, in Crondall, was burglariously broken and entered and stolen therein : a small solid silver Inkstand, oblong in shape, with two glasses, having silver covers, and centre silver taper holder, the initials ' W. H. C. P.' ( interlaced) engraved on the central box ; two pairs of ladies Scissors, one pair has the tip of one blade broken off ; a pair of silver- framed Spectacles ; two small Worcestershire cream- coloured China Yases, peculiar enamel beading border round top, feathers painted in centre, gold band, with white raised beads near top ; three Anti- macassars, one of rich crimson and white wool, large loose raised pattern in red stripe, one white cotton crochet, and one white cotton, made up in squares, with a deep border round only three sides; an ivory Paper Knife, handsomely cut handle, with a spot of ink on the blade ; a green velvet Sketch Book, small vignette on one cover, about 5 by 3 inches ; two magnifying Glasses, black handles, glasses a, bout 3 and 4 ins. respectively in diameter, brass bound ; and an old- fashioned little Bodkin Case, white, with Bodkins and Needles in it. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Stephenson, County Police Station, Aldershot, Hants.— Bow- st., Jan. 28. Between 12 midnight on 17th, and 7 a. m. on 18th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Samuel Massey, Church Lawton, Was broken and entered and there were stolen therein : a double- breasted black cloth Top Coat, four pockets outside, one inside left breast, lined with red and white woollen plaid much worn, and to fit a boy about 16 years of age ; a Shirt, cotton and woollen mixture; and a grey cloth Billycock. Supposed by a boy who had been servant at the house about eight weeks and was discharged on 17th instant. . He is 16 years of age,. 4 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, scabs on both sides of his neck, tattooed on both arms, and an anchor on one; dressed in cord trousers aud clogs, and stolen coat and hat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or to Sergeant Jones, Lawton, near Stoke- upon- Trent, Cheshire. — Bow- street, January 23. trousers, light cap, the crown of which fastens down to the peak with a loop. Stated he was a coal leader. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Scott, Police Office, Castle Eden, Durham.— Bow- street, January 25. Stolen between 10 p. m. on 19th and 9 a. m. on 20th instant, from a stable at 16, Compton - mews, Brunswick- square : a dark bay Horse, aged, clipped trace high, 15 hands, white off' high foot, scanty mane, short tail, scars of cracks on heels of forefeet; four sets of Harness, minus one bridle and bit— one pony's, silver plated, and three brass mounted.—• Metropolitan Police, E Division, January 23. Stolen during the night of 18th instant, from General Phillips, J. P., at Burntwood : a black- faced yearling Shrop- shire Sheep, marked ' R. N. P.,' nearly worn off. BURGLARY" AID HOUSE Stolen early on the morning of 24th December last, by means of house- breaking, from a dwelling- house at Fort Hill, in the parish of Monifirth and county of Forfar : 1 gold Watch, recovered. 1 gold guard Chain, small square links, and a plain gold finger Ring attached. 1 black corded cloth Coat, bound round with black silk braid, buttons covered with same cloth, lined with black cotton, and two pockets behind. 1 Vest, of same, cloth. 1 pair of light grey cloth Trousers, dark stripe on legs, metal buttons, with ' Wm. Laurie, Dundee,' on them. 1 cotton Coat, checked blue and white heavy cloth, lined with stone coloured silk, stone coloured bone buttons, two inside pockets and two outside pockets with flaps, and one ticket pocket. 1 cotton Vest, same as coat. 1 white linen Handkerchief, marked ' J. Nicoll.' 1 gentleman's dark green silk Umbrella, with straight handle. 1 black felt Hat, flat top, maker Christie, London. 1 dark grey cloth Hat, all in good condition. 1 briar root Pipe, white bone mouth piece, ' G. B. D.' on shank. 1 double folding India- rubber Tobacco Pouch. 1 pair of woman's plain white worsted Stockings. 2 £ 1 Bank of Scotland Notes And 16s. in Silver. By WILLIAM YOUNG, alias FRASER, alias GILROY, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6| inches high, brown wavy hair, parted in the centre, slight moustache, no whiskers, blue eyes, fresh complexion, long full face, scar on forehead, and weighs 11-| stones ; may be dressed in part of the stolen clothes, or a suit of check tweed. Was liberated from Perth Penitentiary on 21st December, 1877, after 15 months imprisonment for various housebreakings in Renfrewshire. Stated that he was born in Glasgow, but spent most of his life in London, as a waiter in hotels. His photograph may HORSE AMD CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of 16tli instant, from a field at Boswell, in South Elkington : two Rams, one a shearling, marked ' 29' on near side in black pitch, the other an aged ram, rather lame on the two hind feet, a dot of black pitch marked just above the tail, in fair condition ; the property of Mr. Isaac Sharpley, of Boswell. Information to be given to Inspector Smith, County Police Station, Louth, Lincolnshire — Bow- street, January 28. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of JAMES BOWLES, charged on a warrant with stealing a silver hunting verge Watch, chased cases; a silver Albert i Chain, link pattern, and. an English Lion Shilling attached, about 18th instant ; the property of Charles Pennell, at Sittingbourne ; 18 years of age, a coil maker, and about 5- feet high. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Mayne, Police Court, Sittiug- bourne, Kent.— Bow- street, January 30. Description of H. G. HARRIS, charged on a warrant with stealing a pair of light striped Trousers; a very dark mixture heavy tweed Coat, with pockets in front and breast, and Vest to match; and soft black felt Hat, the property of Alfred Foster : he is about 18 years of age, about 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, light hair, tattooed on wrists with cross fl^ gs and wreath ; dressed in stolen articles, with flannel shiri, worsted socks, low shoes, black silk scarf round his neck, and a blue muffler. He is an absentee from H. M. S. Boscawen, shirt and socks probably would be marked ' H. G. Harris.' Previous to his joining the Navy, lie was a billiard marker. Information to be given to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Office, Guildhall, Dorchester, Dorset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, January 30. Absconded on 23rd instant, charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 17, the monies of his ^ employer : ANDREW JAMES, late groom ta Miles Pestell, horse dealer, Cold Higham, 22 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, blue eyes; dressed in hard billy hat, grey tweed jacket and vest, tightly- fitting cotton cord trousers, muffler round neck, and strong lace- up boots ; has recently cut the top off left thumb, wliick is probably bandaged, and has served nearly 12 months in the 44th Regiment, from which he purchased his discharge, has attended various fairs in England and Ireland, assisting in the purchase of horses and their removal from place to place; he is known to the boat authorities at Liverpool, Hollyhead, Milford, & c. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Norman, Towcester, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, January 30. Found at Margaretting, Essex, on 20th instant, supposed stolen : 2 Cows, one white, with red and white neck, and in calf ; the other a black Welsh, white tail, and gives a little milk. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Lennon, Constabulary Office, Chelmsford, or to Police Con- stable Gallagher, Margaretting, Essex.— Bow- street, Jan. 28. Stolen on the evening of 13th instant, from Ashbourn Green : an aged brown Pony, about .13 hands high, has been fired on off hind leg, the marks of which are visible. A middle aged man was seen taking the Pony away ; he was dressed in a blue or brown overcoat and a black mushy hat, and had a very red face. Iaformation to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Whieldon, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.— Bow- st., Jan. 28. Stolen, on the 22nd instant, from Albion- street, King's Cross : a dark bay Mare ; a set of brass- mounted Harness ; a Hay Cart ( containing 36 trusses of hav), painted yellow, ' John Church, Esq., Woodside, Hatfield, Herts,' on side. By a man 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark com- plexion, black whiskers and beard ; dressed in a black Mac- Intosh coat, leather leggings, black billycock hat.— Metro- politan Police, Y Division, January 25. Wanted on a charge of stealing a Horse ( recovered) the property of Mr. James Waite, of Thorpe, near Easington, on the night of 13th instant a man about 32 years of age, feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, full red face, brown be had. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent hair, cut short, dark ginger bushy whiskers and moustache, Taylor, Court House Buildings, Dundee, who holds a Sheriff's I and stout figure ; dressed in a blue cotton jacket, light cloth Absconded on 29th ultimo, from Kent- green, Odd Rode, charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 50, the monies of his employers Messrs. Williamson Bros. : JOHN WILLCOCK, clerk, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, full sandy whiskers and moustache, proportionate build ; supposed to be dressed in dark blue overcoat, velvet collar, grey tweed or brown suit. A reward of £ 20 will be paid for his apprehension. A photo can be had on application. Description of THOMAS WINTER PRICE, late rate collector for the, parish of St. Margaret's, Leicester, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : about 40 years of a°- e, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, very small light blue eyes, wears spectacles, thin featured, ruddy complexion, light sandy hair ( parted ill centre), whiskers and moustache, and also wears a small tuft under lip, but he may now be clean shaved; is tattooed on one of his arms with the rose, shamrock, and thistle, and the letters ' E. B.' ; skin much freckled ; dressed when last seen in a rough blue Ulster overcoat, dark rough mixture suit, and black soft billycock hat, which he wears a little on one side. He was formerly in the 60tli Rifles, and is fond of talking upon Indian subjects ; is a good musician and plays the euphonium. A reward of £ 10 will be paid to any person who will give information that will lead to his appre- hension.^ Information to be given to Chief Constable Farn- dale, Leicester.— Bow- street, Jamiary 25. Absconded, on the 19th instant, from Tunbridge Wells, charged on a warrant with stealing two pairs of women's new high- legged Button Boots ( one pair recovered) : a jour- neyman shoemaker, who gave the name of HARRY WILLIAMS, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather sandy hair, slight sandy whiskers and moustache, fair complexion, rather weak in the knees, and limps with the right leg when walking, dirty appearance, and is accompanied by a woman with an infant iu arms. The boots not re- covered are a pair of high- leg kid, with nine buttons, high heels, and marked 8/ a. Information to be given to the Police Office, Tunbridge Wells, Kent ..— Bow- street, Jan. 25 Stolen, on lltli instant, from Madley, a Blacksmith's Apron, nearly new, bottom rounded out and corners fringed : by a blacksmith, 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, pale face, light brown hair parted in centre, small light whiskers and moustache, globe mark on right arm ; dressed in dark coat ( torn on left breast), dark waistcoat and trousers, blue shirt, elastic side boots, and black bat, all much worn ; gene- rally put his hand to his mouth, and scrapes his throat before speaking. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cope, Hereford, or Police Sergeant Phillips, Abbey Dore, near Hereford.— Bow- street, January 25. Stolen about 10th instant, from Llanveynoe Clodock : a dark brown Top Coat, double breasted, velvet collar, right pocket burnt, and a small patch put in place. Supposed by an Irishman, 52 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stoutly built, fresb complexion, grey hair and clean shaved ; dressed in white slop, clean woollen cord trousers, dark hard hat, and stroDg heavy nailed boots; is a labourer and tramps the country seeking work at farm houses, and is " supposed to be wearing the stolen coat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cope, Hereford, or to Police Sergeant Phillips, Abbey Dore, Hereford.— Boio- street, January 25. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing " Wear- ing Apparel: JOHN BUTTON, 56 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout " build, grey hair and whiskers, bald head ; dressed in high hat, dark overcoat with velvet collar, respectable appearance. Has friends in Birmingham, Birken- head, and Liverpool, and possibly will make for either of these places. Information to be given to Mr. Chief Super- intendent Jones, Newcastle - under - Lyme. — 1 Bow- sireet, January 25. Absconded on 18tli instant, from a public- house, Gravel- lane, Saint Saviour's, stealing £ 14 : the potman, 35 years of age, 6 feet 5 inehes high, thin face, fair complexion, fair hair and whiskers, slightly carroty ; dressed in black suit, and hard felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, M Division, January 23. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Barrow- in Furness, between 5.30 a. m. and 3 p. m. on 19th instant: £ 8 in Gold; a silver lever Watch, maker ' Thomas Russell' on. face ancl works, No. 21282, had attached a curb pattern silver Albert, with Seal, which has a red stone in it; tod a red flowered silk Handkerchief. Suspicion attached to WM. DANIELS, a hammerman, who had lodged iu the house, and absconded on the morning of the robbery, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 ins. high, pale complexion, dark hair and moustache, and a native of Swansea ; dressed in black cloth overcoat, with velvet collar, dark cloth vest, grey cloth or white moleskin trousers, black velvet cap, and lace- up boots. Stplen from two dwelling- houses ( d° prs of which are in the siime lobby), at Roose, Barrow, between 2 and 9 p. m., on 17th instant A lady's gold Geneva Watch, has the name ' Lander' on face ; had attached a fine- pattern gold Chain. A lady'i- gold Geneva Watch, number not known, ' J. Whittam, Barrow,' oil works ; bad attached a fine- pattern gold Chain, plain link. A Half- sovereign ; a Florin; a Shilling; a brown smooth Overcoat, two pockets outside and one inside left breast; a pair of light plaid Trousers, small pattern ; black felt Hat.; arid a pair of elastic- side Boots. Absconded, charged with obtaining money by false pretences: EDMUND LEASK, late of 6, Lambeth- square. 25 years of age, 5 feci 2 inches high, fair complexion, hair. : wid moustache; dressed in brown ulster overcoat, brown cloth suit, felt bat, iace boots, of respectable appearance, and is a plerk. Is said to have been seen at Brighton on 26 th itisti Warrant issued.— Metropolitan'Policc, E Division, Jan. 30. Description of JOHN DUNN, absconded, charged with obtaining by false pretcnces from Mr. William Smith, at Knutsford, on 23rd instant: a black cloth double- breasted dress Coat, a velvet Vest, a pair of black cloth Trousers, all part worn ; and a Walking- stick. He is 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, dark bushy whiskers and moustache, turning grey, male and female figure on right arm, letter D on left breast; dressed in soft felt billycock hat, broad brim, and above clothes. W convicted at Stockport on 21st Jul}' last, for obtaining money by a trick, and sentenced to six calendar months and two days hard labour, was released from Knutsford Gaol, on 23rd instant; supposed served'in 3rd Dragoon Guards. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Aston, Altrincham, or to Sergeant Oldham, Knutsford, Cheshire.— Boio- street, January 28. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of ELIZABETH FRANCIS, committed for trial at the next Gloucestershire Quarter Sessions, charged with felony : 24 years of age, 4 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair, brown eyes, and fresh complexion ; dressed in brown mixture alpaca dress, trimmed with two black bands, black cloth jacket, trimmed with black braid, black straw hat. trimmed with brown ribbon and black velvet, and elastic- side boots, all old. She has been tramping the country with a man who gives the name of Thomas Francis, and a little girl with her, about a year ancl' ten months old. She was convicted at Newport, Monmouthshire, on 5 th November last, and sentenced to one day's imprisonment for felony. It is supposed she has committed offences elsewhere. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hanbidge, Stroud, Gloucestershire.— Boio- street, January 30. Description of THOMAS KING, committed for trial at Quarter Sessions, charged with uttering counterfeit coin at Alrewas on 5th instant : he is a boot finisher, 24 years' of age, 5 feet 3£ inches high, fresh campleiion, brown hair, grey eyes, slender build, ' T' on left arm ; dressed in a do'iuile- breasted dark pilot jacket with velvet collar, black and white plaid scarf, and hard felt hat. He is single, arid stated he was a native of Mortiniley, West Riding of Yorkshire,' which was found to be false. Information to be given' to Mr S iipei- intendeut Bowen. Bow- street, January 30. RICHARD HEATH, 12 years of age, small size, light hair, pale complexion, and grey ( sunken) eyes ; dressed in round rough grey jacket, dark cord trousers, mended on one knee, black cloth Scotch cap, and black and white scarf. Remanded at Dorchester, until 2nd proximo, charged with larceny: ALFRED MADDOCK, 24 yeara of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, grey eyes, fair complexion, cut over left corner of right eyebrow and left cheek, woman's head on right arm, bracelet and cut on right wrist, • A. M.' and cross- swords back of left arm, cut back of left th) imb, ring on 2nd and 3rd fingers left hand ; a groom, and a native of Luton, Bedfordshire. ROBERT CLARK, 23 years of age, 5 feet 2| inches high, light brown liair, light grey- eyes, fair complexion, cut right corner left eyebrow, mole and scar back of neck, large and long head, anchor on right arm, 3 dots between right thumb and forefinger, anchor on left arm, several blue dots near left thumb, long cut side of left forefinger ; a native of Newbury, Berks, but states he has Jived a long time in Jersey, and has lately be'eu travelling with Patty's Circus as groom. No. 388 JOSEPH CARRIER, who has failed to report himself at Peterborough : he is 43 years of age, 5 feet 51 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, hazel eyes, bullet mark through right hip, which causes him to walk a little lame, tattooed ' J. C. B.', pipes, glasses, and wheel, varicose veins both legs, scars on buttock, right leg, and left arm ; he was convicted 29th June, 1871, of larceny, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude. Description of HARRIET BELL, alias JONES, who is under police supervision for four years from 7th ultimo, and who left Wellington 011 22nd ultimo without reporting her intended residence : she is 24 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fresli complexion, dark hair and eyes, birth mark on right shoulder, and was born at Cledryd, near Chirk ; was convicted at Salop County Sessions March 8th, 1877, sen- tenced to 9 calendar months imprisonment and 4 years uolice supervision. She was previously convicted at Salop County Sessions June 1870 for felony, and 6 months and 1 year police supervision. She booked to Wolverhampton by train 011 22nd ultimo and will most likely be found living with Henry Bell a painter and discharged soldier, to whom she states she is married. Was dis- charged from Westminster Memorial Refuge on the 29th November, 1877; convicted at Swansea Assizes 6th March, 1873, for robbery with another at Cardiff, and sentenced to penal servitude for 7 years and two years police supervision - sentence expires 5th March, 1880. Convicted on 4th April, 1877, at Preston Sessions for stealing 96 Cigars, and sentenced to a calendar months hard labour and 4 years police supervision from 3rd January, 1878. Description of AMELIA WILSON, who is subject to police supervision, and who neglected to report herself after coining out of prison : 56 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, stout build, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, ears pierced, teeth out, is a German ; was convicted on 3rd July, 1877, at Northallerton, for stealing a gold Watch, and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment and 3 years police super- vision, from 2nd January, 1878.
