THE Police Gazette, OR HUE-& ND- CEY. Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry, are to be transmitted under cover addressed to the Inspector- General of Constabulary. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. As the Law ( 48 Geo. 3, c. 140, s. 44,) only permits the insertion of Notices respecting Felonies, no other description of Notice can be inserted in the Hue- and- Cry. DUBLIN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 18177. DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. DESCRIPTION of the under- mentioned, who is wanted on Warrant charging him with having obtained goods by false pretences from trades- people in Dublin :— Charles Doyle, about 32 years old, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, dark brown whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, pale complexion, and marked very much about the nose with small- pox; dressed in a dark tweed Derby coat, shabby gray tweed trow- sers and vest, and round jerry bat; he is a native ; came back from America lately, and said he had a return ticket to go back by the steamship Germania. Information to the Superintendent of the Detective Department, 3, Exchange- court, Dublin, who holds Warrant. JOHN MALLON, Superintendent. Dublin, October 13, 1877. ( R. 1650.) STOLEN from the North- wall, Dublin, on the 17th August, 1877, the following articles, the property of a passenger, between Holyhead and Dublin, viz. :— A brown leather portmanteau, J. C. on each end, canvas cover, same initials on ends, containing the following articles, viz.— a new dress suit, made by Buckmaster, Dawson- street, a morning suit, a shawl- pattern dressing gown ( red flannel lining), about 8 linen shirts ( 9 fancy), 2 night shirts, 1 pair of merino drawers, 2 silk under- vests; the name Buckmaster supposed on inside of collars of coats, on inside of back, straps of vests, on inside of waistbands of trow- sers, and on buttons of latter; 1 dozen collars, 6 silk and 6 cambric pocket- handkerchiefs, and some silk ties, 1 dressing- case well furnished, 1 pair of London made'Tazors with ivory hafts ( 1 of latter split), 1 French razor strop ( maker Eubriel), 1 pair hair- brushes in case, 1 long tortoise- shell comb ( a tooth broken), a large magnifying glass mounted in metal, a small do. mounted in tortoise- shell, a large white ivory double opera- glass, a complete set of ivory teeth ( gold springs), I fancy inkstand ( double cover), a . Roman Catholic prayerbook ( bound in Russian lea- ther, a cross on cover), several reading essays, books, • tc., & c., a silver- mounted cigar case to hold 8 cigars, a brown leather do., about 18 cabinet cigars, and 1 onyx breast- pin, with studs to match. DESCRIPTION of the under- mentioned, who calls him- self Doctor Taylor, and who is wanted, on Warrant charging him with having obtained several sums of fnoney by falsely representing that he was collecting money for an hospital at Damascus :— He is between 30 and 35 years old, 5 feet 5 or 0 inches high, black hair, heavy black eyebrows, black eyes, black mous- tache, and olive complexion ; dresses generally, in dark cloth frock, check trowsers, and round black hat with a feather in band, and occasionally wears a brown overcoat and tall silk hat. He says iiis father was a JeWish rabbi. Information to the Superintendent, Detective De- partment, Dublin, who holds Warrant for arrest. JOHN MALLON, Superintendent. September 21, 1877. ( 1443 b.) DESCRIPTION of a man and woman, names unknown, who are wanted on suspicion of having stolen a cow, which they had in their possession, and offered lor sale to a butcher at Bull- alley, between 4 and 5 ^. M., on the 10th instant:— The man is about 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 finches high, stout build, sandy hair and whiskers, chin shaved, full face, and fresh complexion ; dressed in an. old brown frock coat, light tweed trowsers, and toit jetry hat. ( The woman is 30 to 85 years of age, low size, full features, and pale complexion ; wore an old dark straw bonnet and old light colour plaid shawl. Both ran away, leaving the cow behind, when they saw some hesitation - about buying her. The cow has been claimed by Mr. Richard Graghan. of Kilmore, Coolock, and was stolen from his lands at that place. JOHN MALLON, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, Aug. 20,1877. DESCRIPTION of James Reynolds, wanted for stealing £ 40 from his master on 1 4th instant, and absconding:— He is between 17 and 18 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, ruddy complexion, dark hair inclined to curl, light blue eyes, marks of boils on side of neck ; wore a black cloth jacket, low- crowned hat; speaks with a strong North of Ireland accent; was a page ; is a native of Whitehall, Ballymena, county Antrim, where his parents are supposed to reside. Information to the Superintendent, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. Superintendent's Office, May 15, 1877. DESCRIPTION of convict Thomas Boyle ( 2490), who has broken the conditions of his licence in not re- porting himself to the Constabulary on change of residence:— Convicted at Hillsborough, county Down, at Hilary Sessions, on 7th January, 1870, for larceny- after previous conviction for felony, and sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude; 35 years of age on con- viction, can read and write, is a Roman Catholic, is married and has one child, by calling a dealer, prison trade a weaver; born in Killyman, county Tyrone; he resided before conviction in Belfast; his Mends reside in Belfast; black hair, gray eyes, black eyebrows, prominent nose, large mouth, dark com- plexion^ oval visage, slender make, 5 feet 5f inches high ; a long cut in the hair over forehead. The above- named convict was released from Lusk Prison, on the Oth September, 1877, on an order of licence to be at large, and took his discharge for Liverpool, which place he left without reporting his destination to the Constabulary, and he is suspected of having gone to his wi'e who lives in or near Belfast. In the event of his arrest, he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. Government Prisons Office, Dublin Castle, September 26, 1877. Antrim, who stands charged with having, on 12th June, 1877, in the barony of Lower Glenarm, parish of Ardclinis been one of two men who so seriously assaulted James Crawford that he died on the 17th inst :— Brown eyes, thin nose, dark complexion, full face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 36 years of age; wore a soft hat, dark frock coat, dark trowsers and vest, strong Wellington boots; served in the Naval Reserve ; has the appearance of a man who has been at sea, but is a farmer. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Smith ( mother's surname Reilly), native of Drumestagh, who stands charged with having, on the 1st day of October, 1877, in the barony of Upper Loughtee, parish of Lavey, en- deavoured to induce a young woman who was pregnant to take drugs for the purpose of procuring abortion:— Slightly pockmarked; blue eyes, sharp nose, stout make, 0 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about, 26 years of age, brown hair, curling under hat, small sandy whiskers, no beard or moustache ; wore around hat, dark frieze coat, blight cord trowsers and vest. Is supposed to have between £ 30 and £ 40 with him. which he received from his brother, on a division of land to which he had a claim ; is a farmer's son. Ballyjamesduff, Oct. 15, 1877. ( 14711 c.— 25947. DESCRIPTION of Bernard Gormley ( mother's sur- name Hanley), native of Tarmon, who stands charged with having, on the 15ih August, 1877, in the barony of Castlerahan, parish of Lurgan, seriously assaulted Owen Lynch, by striking him several blows on the head with a stick :— Red freckled face, down- looking; gray eyes, regular nose, red complexion, full face, stout square make, 5 feet 10 inches h: gh, about 30 years of age, sandy hair and moustache; wore a soft black hat, dark tweed coat, dark trowsers and vest; is a farmer's son. Warrant for this man's arrest at Ballyjamesduff. Ballyjamesduff, August 17, 1877. ( 14044 c 24888.) Patrick M'Cabe, described in Hue- and- Cry of 22nd September, 1876, has been arrested. The man supposed to be James Keogh ( way- laying and serious assault) not arrested; Hue- and- Crv, 20th April, 1877. Patrick Grimes ( larceny) not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 23rd March, 1877. Clare. Margaret Green ( bigamy) not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 23rd March, 1877. Cork. The special attention of the Constabulary is directed to the following: DESCRIPTION of John Ryan, native of Cooladerry, county Cork, E. R., who stands charged with having, on the 22nd March, 1875, in the barony of Coshlea, parish of Kilbeheny, fired at Patten S. Bridge, esq., THE POLICE GAZETTE, OS, HUE- AND- CRY, OCTOBER 23, 1877. miner, and discharged soldier, 65th Regiment; states he was born in Bandon, county Cork ( supposed to be untrue, Falmouth is believed to be the place); resided before conviction in Cork; state^ he cannot tell whether he has any friends alive or not ; dark brown hair, brown eyes, brown eyebrows, large nose, large mouth, sallow complexion, angular visage, stout make, 5 feet 6| inches high; pockmarks on right cheek; an anchor on right arm, an eagle on left arm, a bracelet and crown on left wrist, and bracelet on right wrist ( all tattoo marks), D. on left breast; lost one upper front tooth. The above- named convict was released from Lusk Prison, on the 20th February, 1877, on an order of licence to be at large, and took his discharge for Dublin. This man has been residing in the city of Cork, where he left about the 7th ultimo, without reporting himself, and has not since been heard of. In the event of his arrest, he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. Government Prisons Office, Dublin Castle, October 18, 1877. DESCRIPTION of John Little, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 6th Septem- ber, 1877, at Killenarden, in the barony of Upper- cross, parish of Tallaght, stolen a trowsers and hat, value for 15s., which have since been recovered:— Bow- legged, walks stiff, flat feet, down- looking, no whiskers; hooked nose, fair complexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about 23 years of age, dark hair; wore a black cap, brown coat, old dirty trowsers, tweed vest. Tramps about the country and frequents dance- houses; is a labourer. Dundrum, Sept. 11, 1877. ( 14818 o.— 25322,) DESCRIPTION of James Reilly ( mother's surname Reilly), native of Firhouse, who stands charged with having, on the 5th August, 1877, at Knocklyon, in the barony of Uppercross, parish of Tallaght, criminally assaulted a girl 11 years of age:— Brown eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, long face, high cheek bones, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 19 or 20 years of age, fair hair; wore a soft brown hat, dark coat and vest, laced Blucher boots ; sullen in manners ; is a blacksmith, Dundrum, August 7, 1877. ( 13935 c.— 24709.) DESCRIPTION of Joseph Read ( mother's surname Brannagan), native of Tillytown, who stands charged with having, on the 25th day of July, 1877, at Shan- ganagh, in the barony of Rathdown, parish of Rath- michael, stolen a silver Geneva watch, value £ 2, and who having been bailed to appear at Petty Sessions to answer the charge, failed to do so:— A small sear on right side of mouth; brown eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, round full face, stout make, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 24 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a black coat, dark tweed trowseis and vest; is a groom. A Warrant tor his arrest is in the hands of the Constabulary at Tillytown. Dundrum, August 6, 1877. Bridget M'Hugh ( larceny) not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 27th July, 1877. Galway. DESCRIPTION of Edmond F. Purcell, native of^ Dublin, who stands charged with having, on the 18th • September, 1877, at Newbridge, in the barony of Connell, parish of Morristownbiller, obtained the sum of £ 3 by false pretences from the Troop Sergeant- Major, 5 th Dragoon Guards :— Brown hair ; wears a moustache and very small whiskers; hazel eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 9J inches high, about 32 years of age ; wore a low hat, tweed coat, trowsers, and vest ( the tweed is light, mixed with red) ; he has a military appearance, having recently deserted from tho 16th Lancers, in which he was Sergeant- Major; is known in some of the Dublin Military Barracks. DESCRIPTION of William Cussin, native of, Park, who stands charged with having, on the 16th of October, 1877, in the barony of Coshlea, parish of Galbally, assaulted Thomas CAulton, by kicking him on the head :— Bow- legged ; blue or gray eyes, regular nose, slightly freckled complexion, round full face, very stout make, 6 feet 8 inches high, about 25 years of age, red hair • wore a low soft hat, gray tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a farmer's son. DESCRIPTION of Thomas Flaherty, alias William Henry Ford, who stands charged with having, on the 12th October, 1877, in the barony of Limerick, parish ot St. John, escaped from the Limerick Lunatic Asylum, he being a criminal lunatic:— Gray eyes, aquiline nose, pallid complexion, peculiarly careworn expression of face, stooped make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 40 years of age, sandy hair; wore a tweed suit, buttons marked Limerick District Asylum ; friends reside in America. DESCRIPTION of Robert Walsh, native of Killiriane, who stands charged with having, on the 1st Sep tember, 1877, in the barony of Coshlea, parish of Galbally, committed rape :— Bow- legged, and turhx in his toes when walking; blue or gray eyes, thick drooped nose, fresh complexion, round full face, very stout make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 27 years of dge, light brown hair; wore a furry cap, dark tweed coat, trowsers and vest; is a farmer's son. Kilfinane, September 5, 1877. ( 14247 a— 26224.) agent to Nathaniel Buckley, esq., Galtee Castle:— Rather short neck, slightly round shoulders; brown eyes, hooked nose, fresh slightly freckled complexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 40 years of age, dark brown curly hair, sandy whiskers; word a dark coat, cord trowsers, light vest. Mitchelstown, March 24, 1875. ( 5182 c.— 9507.) DESCRIPTION of 2 persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 30th March, 1876, in the barony of Condons and Clangibbon, parish of Mitchelstown, been two of a party who fired at and wounded Patten Bridge, esq., and Constable Mathew Nugent, and shot John Hyland dead at same time and place:— 1. Unknown— Fair complexion, stout make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 35 years of age, sandy whiskers nearly meeting under the chin; wore a cloth frock coat; had his face blackened. 2. Unknown— Fair complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 35 years of age, large sandy whiskers; wore a soft hat, faded cloth coat. Mitchelstown, April 5, 1876. ( 5182 c.— 16188.) DESCRIPTION of Eliza Comber, native of Youghal, who stands charged with having, on the 2nd October, 1877, in the barony of Barrymore, parish of Clonmel, concealed the birth of her infant child :— Brown eyes, straight nose, fair complexion, short face, medium make, 5 feet 2 inches high, about 45 years of age, brown liair;' wore a red plaid shawl, dark dress, and wore her bonnet on back of her head. A Warrant for her arrest is in the hands of the Sub- Inspector at Queenstown. I Queenstown, Oct. 19, 1877. ( 14745 c.— 26013.) Owen Sullivan ( indecent assault) not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 5th June, 1877. Denis Murphy ( manslaughter) not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 25th May, 1877. Donohue ( larceny) not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th March, 1877. Down. DESCRIPTION of Robert Anderson, native of Drum- nagally, near Banbridge,, who stands charged with having, on or about the 15th and 29th September. 1877, in the barony of Lower Iveagh, parish of Blaris, embezzled several sums of money, the property of his employers, " The Hillsborough Linen Company ( Limited) ":— Holds his head down, when walking; dark eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 24 years of age, dark hair, small dark whiskers and moustache ; wore a low hat, gray frock coat, trowsers, and vest. Is a clerk. A Warrant has been issued for his arrest. Banbridge, Oct. 14, 1877. ( 14700 c 25933.) DESCRIPTION of Michael Waters, native of Tallons- own, county Louth, who stands charged with having, on the ' 5th day of October, 1877, in the barony of Newry, parish of Newry, seriously assaulted his wife, Catherine Waters, thereby endangering her life :— Leans forward when walking; gray eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 40 years of age, dark gray hair, small black beard and whiskers ; wore an old straw hat, brown c| oth coat, and moleskin trowsers ; there were marks of blood on his clothes, and the thumb of right hand was severely bitten by the woman in the struggle; is a labourer. A Warrant is in the hands of the Constabulary at Mayobridge for his arrest. Rathfriland, Oct. 10, 1877. ( 14660 c.— 25863.) DESCRIPTION of James Murphy, native of Carrick- broad, near Forkhill, county Armagh, who stands charged with having, on the 21st September, 1877, ih the barony of Upper Iveagh, parish of Seapatrick, seriously assaulted Thomas Reavey, so as to endanger his life:— Gray eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, pale face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 2* 0 years of age, fair hair; wore a cap, dark frock coat, moleskin trowsers ; is a labourer. Gilbert M'Ilurick ( embezzlement) not arrested; Hue- and- Cry 4th May, 1877. Dublin. DESCRIPTION of convict William Hodge ( 2472), who has broken the conditions of his licence in not reporting himself to the Constabulary on change of residence :— Convicted at Kanturk, county Cork, at December Sessions, on 31st December, 1872, for housebreaking and robbery, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude; 25 years of age on conviction, reads and writes badly, is a Protestant, single, by trade a DESCRIPTION of Coleman Conneely, native of Letterard, who stands charged with having, on the 14th October, 1877, in the barony of Ballinahinch, parish of Moyrus, seriously assaulted Patrick King, by striking him with a stone over the right ear:— Gray eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 20 years of age, fair hair ; wore a black cloth cap, flannel coat, frieze trowsers and vest, Roundstone, Oct. 19,1877. DESCRIPTION of Jeremiah Coushen or Cousin, native of Illaunmeen, county Tipperary, who stands charged with having, on the 28rd May, 1877, in the barony of Coshlea, parish of Galbally, seriously assaulted Edward M'Grath, game- keeper to Lieut.- Colonel Massy :— Gray eyes, regular nose, fair com- plexion, freckled face, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 2 5 years of age, fair hair, light moustache; wore a hard round black hat. coarse dark tweed coat, dark tweed trowsers and vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Nicholson, native of Wales, who stands charged with having, on the 13th c^ iy of October, 1877, in the barony of South Naas, parish of Connell, stolen 5 pieces of cloth and a silk dress, in a bass, value about £ 5, the property of John Douney, pedlar:— Slight halt, and stutters; large dark eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, 6 feet high, about i40 years of age. DESCRIPTION of John Grady ( mother's surname Mary Cleary), native of Ardkilmartin, who stands charged with having, on the 10th July, 1877, in the barony of Liberties of Kilmallock, parish of Saint Peter and Paul, committed an indecent assault:— Very brown eyes, long thin nose, sallow complexion, long thin face, medium make, 6 feet inches high, about years of age, dark brown hair, has small black whiskers, and shaves his chin, wore a jerry hat, blue frieze coat, cord trowsers, dark tweed vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of John Connell, native of Kilhoyle, who stands charged with having, on the 24th day of May, 1877, in the barony of Keenaght, parish of Balteagh, assaulted Henry Kelly, junior, of Kilhoyle, by striking him on the head with a stone and kicking nim on the bqdy, from the effects of which he died on the 10th inst.:— Old cut- marks on face; blue eyes, regular nose, florid complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 37 years of ago, red hair; wore a soft round hat, it is supposed dark tweed coat, dark trowsers and vest. The special attention of the Constabulary is directed to the following: DESCRIPTION of Thomas Hunt, ( mother's surname Quigley,) native of Knockgranagh, who stands charged with having, on the 29th November, ult,, in the barony of Leyny, parish of Achonry, murdered John M'Gloin, by fracturing his skull with a large stone : — r- Down- looking appearance, two upper front teeth large and prominent, high cheek bones, large heavy lips, sunken jaws, very broad shoulders; it is alto stated that Hunt's left wrist is tattooed; glaring black eyes, slightly cocked nose, sallow complexion, oval face, stout make, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, about 27 or 28 years of age, black hair, small dark moustache ; wore a dark cloth coat, trowsers, and vest. Was in America, and lately returned from England, where he worked as a labourer. Has a pair of English- made navvy boots with iron plates under toes, also a pair of light Wellington boots.
