WOTODI33TG,, Description of THOMAS BAKER, alias MAY, who is charged with maliciously wounding on the 17th instant, Kate Painter ( whose life is despaired of), with whom he cohabited at 43, Dean- street, Birmingham: he is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache, turning grey; dressed in dark clothes, and soft billycock hat. He has lately kept a brothel at the above address. It iu supposed that he left Birmingham late on the night of the 17th or early on the morning of the 18th instant, He is known in Piccadilly,; London. Kate Painter is a married woman, and her husband a cattle dealer, living in Alderwick- cfttages, Barnsbury- grove, Islington, London. A warrant has been issued for his apprehension. On the 11th instant, the body of a newly- born male Child, with its siull fractured, was found in a nude state in a ditch on the side of the North Union Railway at Euxton. At the Coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. Between the hours of 7 p m. on the l" th, and 7 a. m. on the 18th instant, the dwelling house of Miss Elizabeth Brocket, of Spains Hall, Willingale Spain, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a gentleman's writing Case, con- taining several papers and Bills 3 or 4 Youshers, and Seal with a crest; also stolen a small silver Spoon, a tortoiseshell cased Watch, several gold and silver Coins, and a Spade Guinea, and a Spanish Coin; a Token with a hole drilled in the centre, a diamond Scarf Pin, 6 Sovereigns, 1 Half- sovereign, 2 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' C. G. S.'; 5 silver Spoons, marked ' W.' and a stags head. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, February 21. Between 1 and 5 p. m. on the 16th instant, a cottage in the occupation of Jane Wood, of Build was, widow, was broken aud entered, and stolen therein: a very old- fashioned red and black Cashmere or worsted soarf Shawl, with a black fringe, most of which is worn oft. Supposed by a man of the following description, who was seen near the place about 2 p. m. on the above date : about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, thin face, and dark whiskers ; dressed in a rather long black or dark jacket, aud dirty moleskin trousers; he had the appearance of having woiked in an ironstone pit or quarry. On the night of the 15th instant, Battle Abbey, occupied by His Grace the Duke of Cleveland, was broken aud entered and the following articles of Jewellery stolen therein : A Necklace of diamonds and rubies, with stars hanging from it of rubies, diamonds, and emeralds. A Cross and Ear- rings of lapis- lazuli, set with diamonds and pearls. A pair of ruby and diamond Ear- rings. A gold chatelaine Watch, of blue euamel and pearls, and 0} her ornaments hanging from it. A pair of turquoise Ear- rings, with grey pearl pendants. A gold Bracelet, with a cluster of diamonds. A gold Bracelet, with one large pearl and diamond. An Indian Necklace of seven rows of small pearls, and emerald drops with Ear- rings. An Indian Necklace, of gurnet, turquoise, with Ear- riDgs. A cresent of Indian Diamonds, with emerald drops. A turquoise Eagle. A holbein Locket, set with large emeralds and diamonds. A Clasp, of blue enamel, set with large yellow diamond, and many smaller ones. An amethyst Cross and EarriDgs, set in enamel. Twenty- four silver Luckam Bangles. A row of very fine Pearls, 31 in number. A large diamond Locket, with pearl centre, and large pearl drops. A Necklace and Ear- rings of silver Greek coins. A Necklace of four rows of silver chains, and Cross, enamelled in ring with small pearls. A gold bead Bracelet, with three Lockets hanging from it, one in blue enamel and diamonds, one in coral and diamonds, and one with cypher in diamonds. A Pendant of black enamel, mounted wilh pearls, dia- monds, and rubies. A very large round Roman gold Locket. A Cross of fine Agates, mounted in gold. Whoever shall give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender< r offenders, shall receive £ 200 reward. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Jenner, Battle, or at the Chief Constables Office, Lewes, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 19. Latimer, advertised in Police Gazette of 2lBt instant,— Boat- street, February 23. Description of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM SMITH, of Fownhope and Hampton Bishop ( fictitious) about 22 years of age, about 5 ft. 8 ins. high, rather slender make, rather long dark features, dark brown hair, small tuft of hair on chin, small moustache, and very little whiskers; dressed in long dark coat, dark or grey trousers, black hara felt hat, black leather leggings, and white muffler; had the appear- ance of a farmer. See Police Gazette of 23rd August, 1876. He is charged— 1st, with stealing ten Sheep, the pioperty of Mr. Robert Bennett, at Lea, on 12th August last, which were sold in Gloucester Market the same day, and have since been recovered. He was paid for the Sheep by a cheque, which he endorsed ' William Smith.' 2udly, with stealing fourteen Sheep, the property of Mr. Henry Scud- amore, at St. Weonard's, on the 31st of Januarv last, and which were sold by auction in Hereford Market the same day. He was paid by cheque, which he endorsed John Smith'. In each case, Smith drove th"> Sheep close to the town early in the morning, and then employed a boy to drive them into the market. After 1 oiking the Sheep for auction, Smith left the market until they were soid, and then returned for the money. £ 10 reward and all reasonable expenses will be paid for his apprehension and conviction, on application to Superintendent Smith, Ross, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 23. Ou the 19th ultimo, a Pony aim Jart were left at the ' George' public- house, Baldock, Herts, and supposed to have been stolen : a biowii mare Pony, aged, 12 hands high, with silver mounted Harness, no blinkers on bridle, the cart is painted dark green, picked out with light green, green leather cushions, aud a Rug, pattern a lions head. By a man, about 30 years of age, a pianoforte tuner, who stated that he was going to Rugby, and should return on the 22nd. . Information to be given to Inspector Young, Hitchin, Herts.— Bow- street, February SI. Absconded from Chatteris on 15th instant, charged with another in custody with slaughtering and stealing part of the caTcass of a Sheep, the property of Hugh Smith, Farmer, of Chatteris, on tue night of the 5th instant : JOHN DONOUGHOE, native of Ireland, a labourer, 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather fresh complexion, deeply pockmarked, blue eyes, brown hair, inclined to curl, whiskers short round his face, but may be clean shaved, hands and ! arms freckled, scar between eyebrows, stout build; dressed ! in light mixture cap, with peak and knot on the top, rather large fustian jacket, pockets outside and very large ones inside, the latter supposed to be stained with blood, fustian trousers, and strong lace- up boots. He has the appearance of a navvy, and is likely to seek employment on public j works. He went in the direction of Peterborough. Infoi- | mation to be given to Inspector Mitchell, Chatteris, Isle of Ely.— Bow- street, Feb. 21. Stolen during the night of the 16th instant, from a stable in the parish of High Wycombe : a dark brown cart Mare, aged. 16 hands high, white star on forehead, blind with near eje, small forerop, two white hind heels, white mark on off shoulder near the witheis, and in good condition ; also a light brown cart Mare, aged, 15£ hands high, email foretop, white star on forehead, one white hind foot, has been fresh shed, and in good condition. Supposed by two men, one about 37 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stout build, sandy curly hair, fieokled face and bands ; dressed in dark green and black plaid suit, dark brown loose overcoat, black hard felt hat, splay footed. The other about 43 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight made, very light coloured whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark brown cutaway coat and vest, daik cord trousers fitting tight to the leg, and hard felt hat. They had in their possession a black Mare, about 15i hands high, and a strong spring Cart, very high on the wheels, green colour picked out with white, the off wing broken, and the tailboard broken at the top ; they offered the horse » nd cart for sale in the Wycombe Market on the 16i. h instant, but did not sell them, and left about 9 o'clock in the evening, aud were seen about 12 o'clock about a mile from the farm wbere the horses were stolen from, with the two hi rses attached to the hind part of the cart, they were afterwards seen near Hayes, M ddlesex, about 4 o'clock in the morning going in the direction of London, with only one horse tied at the bick of the cart, aud they enquired if they had seen a loose horse. Infor mation to be given to Superin- tendent Sergeant, High Wycombe, Bucks. — Bow- street, Febiua'y 21. Stolen from the farm of Mr, T. Holtby, Corpelanding, between the 22ud ultimo aud the 15th instant : twenty Ewes iu lamb, some maiked with red paint on the rump, and some punched through both ears. It stolen, £ 5 rewaid will be paid by Mr. Holtby, to any person givirg such information as will lead to the conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Harper. Absconded from Saltburn- by- the- Sea, on 23ri ultimo, charged with embezzlement, the property of the North Eastern Railway Company : JAMES WILLIAM SENIOR, late boi king clerk at Saltburn Railway Station, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7J inches high, very light complexion light Vue eyes, light brown curly hair, parted in the centre^ 2 POLICE GAZETTE. February t 23 light moustache, full face, small light brown whiskers, regular features, high forehead, full figure, and rather stout, very forward in his manner and of good address, walks with his knees close and turns his toes in; sometimes wears a light brown small check tweed suit, and sometimes a dark tweed coat and vest, light tweed trousers, and long blue pilot Ulster coat with band, and generally a stiff black felt hat, and low shoes. He belongs to the neighbourhood of Robin Hood's Bay, near Whitby, North RidiDg of Yorkshire. Information to be gives to Superintendent Armstrong, North Eastern Railway, Darlington, or to Superintendent Brest, North Riding Constabulary, Guisbro, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 23. Absconded from Shrewsbury on 16th instant, charged with larceny : JOHN McKENZlE, alias JOHN RYAN, a shoemaker, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, black tuft of hair on chin, thin pale face, slender build, and waika erect; dressed in black frock coat, dark mixture cloth trousers and vest, black felt hat, and an apron. Information to be given to Head Con- stable Daines, Borough Police Office, Shrewsbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 23. Absconded from Paulton on 21st instant, charged with stealing about £ 2 in Money, and a pair of watertight lace up Boots : WILLIAM HOOK, a collier, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather stout built, light hair, no whiskers, fair complexion, and full face ; dressed in rough black cloth cap, WITH peak and tassel on CXOWD, white scarf with red spots, mixed cloth monkey jacket, black cloth vest, mixed cloth trousers, repaired at knees with blaek material, and the stolen boots. He has woiked at various collierios in the north of England, and is supposed to have gone to Durham. Information to be given to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Fab. 23. Stolen since 4th instant, from 40, Bramley- road, Regents Park : a gold hunting Watch* enamelled face ; a gold Albert Chain ; 7 Shirts ( 5 white. 1 coloured woollen, sect 1 flannel), 2 pairs of Drawers ; 3 merino vests ; a blue cloth Overcoat, Trousers and Vest, . anchor buttons; 2 clothes Brushes ; a green carpet Bag; and £ 5 in Gold. By a woman, 28 years of age, 5 J'eet ft inches high, dark complexion, hair and eyes; dressed in. brown linsey, black cloth jacket, brown straw hat. red feather, and button boots. He is a miner and a native of Darlaston, is well known at Wednesbury, Willenhall, and other towns in South Staffordshire. Information to be given Superin- tendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Sergeant Cockerell, Hednesford, near Stafford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- ftreet, Feb. 21. Stolen from the dwelling- house of David Sellerd, of Acocks- green, on 17th instant: .£ 10 in Gold and Silver. By JOHN SELLERD, a nephew of the above, 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, very dark complexion, dark hair and eyes, moustache and small imperial, ' J. S.' on left arm, anchor on right arm in Indian ink, burn and tattoo marks on both hands ; dressed in short dark coat, much worn, cord trousers, black vest, old lace- up boots, with slits behind. Stolen on 1he 17th instant, from 17, North Audley- st,, St. George's : a lady's small gold open- face Watch, white dial, maker Upton, a long gold Neekchain, a telescope Pencil- case, short thick gold Key, and piece of gold fretwork Chain attached ; a brown leather Purse, containing £ i in gold and £ l 2s. in Silver; and a brown cloth Jacket, trimmed with imitation brown fur. By a housemaid, 19 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fresh complexion, and dark hair and eyes ; was dressed in a dark stuff frock.— Metropolitan Police, C Division,, Februwry 21. Absconded on the 10th instant, from 447, . Strand, embez- zling £ 3 : a man, 35 years of age, 5 feet, 6 inches high, and dark brown hair, beard and eyes ; dressed in grey suit.— Metropolitan. Police, E Division, February 21. Absconded from Leicester on the 16t, h instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: JAMES LANGLEY, a commercial traveller in the ironmongery business, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, beard and . moustache, high forehead, good looking, speaks slowly and correctly ; dressed in a check tweed suit, Irish frieze overcoat, ands Ik hat. He is a native of Llanwair, near Caerleon, Monmouthshire, and has held situations in Wales, Maidstone, Northampton, and other places. Inforn ation to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- slreet, February 21. Stolen from ' the Blossoms Inn, Wrexham, on 14th inst. ; the property of Mr. F. C. Richards : one dark blue Topcoat, almost new ; one Ditto dark blue twilled Prince of Wales, bound with silk braid ; one pair of dark tweed Trousers, not much worn; and one light Waistcoat, torn a little at both sides. By a man of the following description who lodged there: 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow com- plexion, long face, deeply pockpiited, has a fresh burn or sore on chin, small grey eyes, auburn hair, very short sighted, walks with a swaggering gait, with toes slightly turning in. He follows the theatrical profession, and sings at public- houses, concerts, & c. Information to he given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham, Denbighshire.—£ ow- ttreet, February 19. Description of GEORGE GASCOIGNE ROGERS, who is wanted in this borough on a charge for larceny : he is about 40 years of age, & feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, medium build, sandy hair, whissers and moustache, and thin features ; dressed in cloth mixture elothes, aDd black silk hat. He is a coach builder by trade, and is accompanied by his wife and 6 or 7 children, the eldest being a boy 16 years of age, named George. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, Feb. 19. Absconded, charged with embezzlement at Exeter : THOMAS BELLBY, who absconded on 17th ultimo, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, small dark moustache and whiskers, thin features, sharp chin, tattooed on arm and wrist; wearing a blue pilot jacket, and dark speckled trousers. He will likely join the Merchant Service. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Bent, Exeter, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion,— Bow- street, February 19. Absconded from Bedford, charged with stealing abou ,£ 100, on the 2Sth ultimo, the property of Charles Bailey Halliley, and others : GEORGE HENRY McKINDER, a clerk, 16 years of age, about 5 feet high, medium build, and rather bow legged, dark brown hair, fair and fresh com- plexion ; dressed in dark grey suit, and round felt hat; he booked for London on the 5th instant, and it is supposed is endeavouring to leave the country or go to sea. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st. February 19. Absconded on the 12th instant, from 89, High Holborn, embezzling about 4200 : a man, late of 27, Wellington- street, Camden Town, 25 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, turning, ^ rey ; dressed in dark clothes, of respectable appearance, and is a clerk.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 19. Absconded on 16th instant from Sheffield, having stolen about £ 50: Colour- Sergeant Thomas W.
