Monday, December 25, being Christmas Day, the " Police Gazette" will be published on Saturday, December 23. THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of John Wakeham, of Blackawton, mason, on the highway near Harbertonford village, in the parish of Harberton, Devon, about 9' 30 p. m. on the 5th inst.: a silver Geneva Watch, with jet chain and padlock attached ; and a leather Purse, containing 1 Sovereign, and about 13s. in Silver. By two men : one is about 5 feet 9 inches high, and dressed in dark clothes and cap ; the other is about 5 feet 6 inches high, and wore a white slop and cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Dore, G Division, Devon Constabulary, Kingsbridge.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen from the person on the llth instant, a silver Geneva Watch, No. 41369, cream- coloured dial, had round the edge and on the dome of the watch ' Exhibition Prize Medal,' with a plated Albert attached. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street,, December 15. . INFORMATIONS. OTBBE£ AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDIIG. Further information respecting the murder by CHAS. PEACE, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 4th instant: ,£ 100 reward will be given by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person employed in a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the said Charles Peace. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Jackson, Central Police Offices, Sheffield, Yorks. Bow- street, December 15. On the night of 30th ultimo, Mr. John Morrison, head gamekeeper to Francis Monckton, Esq., M. P., was attacked by a gang of five poachers at Crateford, near Brewood, Staffordshire, one of whom fired a gun with intent to murder him. One of the offenders who proves to be WILLIAM HUMPHREYS, alias JOLLY, of Shrewsbury, has been apprehended, identified, and remanded. The following men ( who have absconded) are charged on warrants with the attempt to murder : THOMAS ALLMAN, alias TIMER, native of Shrews- bury, 29 years of age, 5 feet 6^ inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, slight whiskers, left hand cut off at wrist, to which he fixes or unfixes at pleasure an iron hook, or occasionally an iroa knob, he usually carries the stump in trousers or jacket pocket, out of sight, the hook or knob is screwed into a block, whilst a leather case covers his forearm, and is strapped above the elbow under his jacket; dressed either in cloth plaid woollen trousers, or corduroy trousers and waistcoat, washed nearly white, blue cloth cap, peak of same material, button on top, may wear a navvy's drab slop, which ties round waist with running tape. Is likely to be in possession of pawntickets for his Watch and Clothes. He has worked at navvy work, horse driving and boating, and is a well known leading poacher iu ( Shropshire, Cheshire, Flint, Herefordshire, Derbyshire, Worcestershire, and Stafford- shire. WILLIAM PRICE, alias ' CHECKER,' native of Trench, near Wellington, Salop, by trade a forgeman, 31 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, brown hair and eyes, and broken nose ; dressed in new moleskin jacket, old moleskin trousers and vest, dark cloth cap, lace- up boots, and is likely to be with ALLMAN. JOHN WILLIAMS, alias ' DAVIES,' alias ' WORCES- TER DICK,' alias ' BRUMMY,' labourer and militiaman, supposed native of Worcester, 28 years of age, 5 ft. 6| ins. high, stout build, fresh complexion, light haiv, no whiskers, grey eyes, oval visage, supposed cast in one eye, tattooed on right arm with anchor and bracelet, and cut mark on fore- head over right eye. RICHARD OWEN, alias WOODBINE, alias LITTLE DICK THE NAVVY, supposed to be a native of Salop, wife and infant, with father in law, an ex- railway sub- con- tractor, residing at Derby, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, very active, light hair, no whiskers, full face, good features ; supposed dressed in dark jacket, moleskin or dark Bedford cord trousers, buttons at bottom of legs, sometimes wears a sealskin cap, and sometimes a dark cloth cap with cloth peak, strong navvy boots with toe and heel plates. May have the following dogs with them: one is a brown rough haired dog, crossed with sheep and greyhound, 11 months old, answers to ' Charley,' is attached to Allmanj another is a dark brindle greyhound- looking dog, ten months old, answers to ' Lion,' attached to Owen ] and another is a black greyhound looking dog, two years old, answers to ' Snap,' is attached to Williams. .£ 100 reward will be paid Stolen from a dwelling- house at Seacombe, on the 10th instant, by means of housebreaking : £ 12, in Gold. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Hall, Birkenhead, or Inspector Hindley, Sessions House, Egremont, Cheshire.— Bow- street, Decernber 15. Further information respecting the robbery by house- breaking at the residence of Rev. Robert Gradwell and Catholic Chapel, Claughton, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13th ultimo : also stolen, a silver lever Watch, maker Roskell and Co., Liverpool, has the name ' Rev. Robert Gradwell,' engraved on brass plate covering the works; an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, loose cases, No. 3786, maker Roskell and Co., Liverpool. The brass Plate and silver Pyx have been recovered, but from the pyx has been taken the inside glass and round box, and from the brass plate has been taken the centre piece, representing a lamb in enamel work on a blue ground, round, 5 inches in diameter, and twenty jewels, four were ruby, red, about J- in. diameter, six more were red, and a size smaller, the remaining ten were clear crystals of a small size, some coloured red, and rest clear, transparencies and merely glass. The Medals ( which are rare) and the other Articles are still missing. Information to be given to Superintendent Webb, Bowgrave, Garstang, Lancashire,— Bow- street, December 15. Between 6' 30 and 10 p. m. on the 9th instant, the dwelling- house of William Fairfield, High Town, Hednesford, was entered by raising the window sash, and £ 12 10s. in Gold stolen therein. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Sergeant Cockerell, Police Station, Hednesford, near Stafford.— Bow- street, December 13. Stolen by means of housebreaking about 6 p. m., on the 8th instant, from the dwelling- house of Charles Smith, Railway Swan Inn, Bedford : A silver Geneva Watch, maker ' Webb, Oxford- street,' A small silver Chain. A gold albert Chain. A gold Locket, a horseshoe chased on back. A small gold Pencil Case. A silver Brooch, imitation of two fern leaves. A gold pin, a fox's tooth with a gold band across. And between £ 9 and ,£ 10 in gold and silver. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford, Beds.— Bow- street, December 13. sailor, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, rather long and thick ; dressed in shabby dark clothes and cap, with leather peak. He carried a small umbrella, and he frequents low lodging- houses. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Denson, Police Station, Aylesbury, Bucks.— Bow- ttreet, December 18. Description of GEORGE EVANS, alias LUDLOW GEORGE, charged on a warrant with stealing, at Clifford, Herefordshire, on 24th ultimo : a Mackintosh ( recovered), and a pair of blue woollen Stockings, men's large size, nearly new ; about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender build, very little dark brown hair and whiskars under chin, and bald on top of head ; dressed in grey jacket, dark cloth trousers with patch on one knee, and cap. He is a drover, sometimes collects rabbit skins, and is well known in Rad- norshire and Shropshire. Information to be given to Sergeant Ovens, Police Station, Witney, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, December 18. Absconded from Market Lavington, Wilts, charged with stealing a Hand Saw ( recovered), a Hammer, and a small Hatchet, the property of Mr. William Box, engineer : JOHN TARRANT, a labourer, 24 years of age, 5 feet 7\ inches high, fresh complexion, full features, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, and stout build; dressed in light brown coat, corduroy trousers, and hard bowler hat. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable" Woodman, Wilts Con- stabulary, Devizes, or to Police Constable Grimby, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen from the house of Robert Allen, at Keadley, on the 10th instant, a pair of strong lace Boots, recently soled and heeled, the soles are sprigged, the heels have square headed nails; a white flannel Shirt, feather stitched round the neck with violet coloured cotton ; a grey woollen'' Shirt, recovered ; 3 pairs of brown worsted Stockings; a black and white check vest, much worn; and a piece of cooked Beef. By a lodger, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inchesyBlgh, fresh complex'vii^ dark brown hair and whiskers; a grey knotted ci6th top coat, yellow cloth trousersj'the stoien boots and vest, and black cloth cap with knob on top. In- formation to be given to Inspector Crawford, Epworth, near Bawtry, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, December 18. Description of a man, remanded until the 20th instant, on suspicion of stealing a bay Pony, about 12 hands high, square cut tail, no white about any part of body, in good condition, supposed stolen from a distance, as it was very dirty. The man gives his name as WILLIAM MAYBE, 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, small black whiskers, sallow complexion; dressed in a soft felt bowler hat, old grey tweed coat, black vest, corduroy trousers, heavy lace- up bocts, red check shirt, with blue checked one underneath. States he has worked at Bruton and Shrewton, Wilts. Information to be given to Superintendent Jeffs, North Petherton, Somerset.— Bow- sireet, December 18. Stolen from a field at Cole Lanes, near Bilston, on the 28th ultimo : a dark brown Mare, aged, 15£ hands high, large tail and mane, in good condition, the property of Henry Marsden. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent M'Crea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- ttreet, December 13. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from the • Eight Bells,' in Aylesbury, on the 9th instant: a pair of women's Boots, recovered. By a tramping Absconded, embezzling ,£ 10 from 152, Tottenham- court- road, St. Pancras : WILLIAM HOLLOWAY, a porter, 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair and eyes; dress, light grey suit, and low black hat. Also on the 2nd instant, embezzling £ 22 from the above address : JOHN WEBB, a porter, 19 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair ; dress, black coat, dark trousers, and low black hat. Warrants issued.— Metropolitan Police, E Division.— Bow- street, December 13. Charged with larceny at Sacriston, on 9th ultimo, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued : JOHN LIDDELL, a miner, late of Sacriston, 30 years of age, ! 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, high cheek bones, blue eyes, light hair, slight moustache, no whiskers, stout figure ; dressed in blue pilot jacket, woollen cord trousers, brown cloth cap with tassel on top and cheesecutter peak, and strong pit shoes. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Dunn, County Constabulary Office, Durham.— Bow- street, December 13. Description of LAWRENCE RYAN, charged with embezzlement: he is 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, light whiskers and moustache, brown hair, parted behind ; dressed respectably ; formerly a member of the Metropolitan Police Force. Warrant issued.— Metropo- litan Police, E Division, December 13. Description of JOHN SEYMOUR, a groom, charged with stealing Weariug Apparel at Drayton Bassett, on the 8th instant: about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, light brown hair parted down the centre, pale face, no whiskers or moustache, cut mark on upper lip extending under nose, and has an impediment in his speech; dressed in black billycock hat, black reefer jacket, with velvet collar, grey trousers, and block- fronted boots. Information to be given to Inspector McCrea, Tamworth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- ttreet, December 13. Absconded from Luton, charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 10 18s. 4d. on the llth instant, from Mr. T. C. Johnson, an innkeeper : HENRY LEES, 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather stout build, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, of very active appearance, slight whiskers, no moustache; when last seen was dressed in hard low felt hat, short black coat, dark vest and trousers. Once served as barman at the ' Wheatsheaf' public- house, Edgware- road, also has worked at a ginger beer manufactory at Croydon. Information to be given to Head Constable Jaquest, Luton, Bedfordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bm- street, December 13. Description of WILLIAM OWEN alias OWEN WIL- LIAMS, charged with stealing a small gold Geneva Watch, gold face, and black hands, at Headington, near Oxford, on the 25th ultimo : he is about 5 feet 5 inches high, about 27 years of age, dark complexion, dark brown hair, dark mous- tache, and small whiskers; dressed in a dark tweed pea jacket, and light brown tweed trousers; he travels the county repairing glass, china, and chairs. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or to Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 13. A FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described), Absconded charged on a warrant with fraudulent bankruptcy: JAMES DAWSON, alias McBEATH, alias McGRATH, about 58 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sandy hair turning grey, florid complexion, stout build of good address, and a native of Scotland. He left Hull on the 8th October last, and is supposed to have a large sum m gold in his possession, and was in business in Hull as a coal merchant. £' 25 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to his apprehension. In- formation to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, York- shire.— Bm sreet, December 15. ' M&. STEVENSON, charged on a mackintosh Coat from George on 27th ultimo, by false and fraudulent pretences. He is about 45 years of age, 6 feet 1 or 2 inches high, fresh complexion, large features, and has the appearance of a foreman or manager of works. His plan is to call upon some firm and give large orders, stating he represents the Trodingham Iron Works, or some such firm, and then obtains goods on account. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 18. or 7 inches high, dark complexion, small dark whiskers and moustache, rather round shoulders, and generally dresses in a black sammy hat, blue reefer jacket, and cord trousers. And SHIFTON, about 22 years of age,_ 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, upright, or rather slender build, no Description of JOHN warrant with obtaining a Henry Lennard, in Hull, at, Found on the; 14th instant, in the river Dove, in t parish of Egginton, Derbyshire, the body of a man, supposed to have been in the water about a fortnight : about 65 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches long, grey hair, partly bald, grey whiskers, round face and chin ; dressed in dark cloth coat and vest, light fustian trousers, laee- up boots, and blue striped shirt. At the coroner's inquest an open verdict, was returned. Information to be given to the Deputy Chief Constable, Litchurch, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, December 18. Description of WILLIAM MUNSEN, alias W. H. LEICESTER, remanded at Southampton until the 22nd instant, havmg the following property in his possession, supposed to have been stolen between 23rd and 29th Septem- ber last : a gold mourning Ring, set with nine diamonds in centre ; a gold mourning Ring, ' In memory of' on band ; a pair of large gold ear- drops ; a large flit gold Geneva Wateh ; a lady's gold Geneva Watch, No. 35813 on case, embossed back, star and wi<- at, h of flowers in centre of face. He deserted from the 35th Brigade Depot at Devonport, ou the 26th April lane, stealrn," the following property belonging to Captain Trueman, which has not been recovered : a heavy gold etrustan Bracelet, with cameo likeness of Captain True- man ; a heavy red gold Bracelet, with platina ornaments; a gold chain Necklace, with four lion's claws mounted in gold ; a set of gold Studs and Wristlinks, and a gold Pin, with cameo head. He is 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, no whiskers, full face, stout build ; dressed in dark mixture suit, and hard billycock hat, Information to be given to Head Constable Breary, Southampton, Hants. — Bow- street, December 18. Remanded at Portsmouth until tho 22nd instant, on ' several charges of pocket picking in shops 5, a man who gives the name of THOMAS HAYES, abotit' 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inehes long, black curly hair, grey eyes, dark complexion, small moustache, whiskers shaved off, large scar under left jaw, one cut mark on left cheek under the eye, and another on thick part of left forearm, anchor tattooed on back of left hand, three indistinct tattoo maiks on left fore- arm large varicose veins on left kg, and small ones on right leg ; dressed in double- breasted blue diagonal cloth frock coat and vest of same material, dark tiousers, elastic- side boots, black felt hat, and black silk necktie; he says he is a boot rivetter, and a native of Dublin. Information * 1 given to tin- Chief Constable, Portsmouth, Hants. December i 8. whiskers, or moustache, and generally dresses in cap with peak and knot on top, green plaid shooting coat, tight fitting mix- ture trousers, and kca- up boots. These men are all known at Derby, Swadlincote, Newhall, and Church Gresley. Description of three men charged with violently assaulting . Police Constable Chandler, on the night of the 10th instant, at CoJeford : GEORGE PADFIELD, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, clean face ; dressed in dark clothes, and bowler hat. JOHN COLES, 20 years of age, 5 feet, 5 inches high, light complexioii ; dressed in dark clothes, and black cap. And THEODORE MOORE, alias SYKES, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, slight moustache, and rather round shou lders j dressed in brown cloth coat, cord trousers, ap. d soft billycock hat. These men are colliers, and natives of Coleford ; they are cut by the Constable's staff, and each of them took away a bundle of clothes. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Goold, Glastonbury, or to Superintendent Deggan, Frome, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, December 15. Description of HARRIETT BROOKER, who left her home at East Peckham, Kent, at 8 a. m. ou the 5th instant, and who applied for admission at the Mailing Union Work- house the same day, and has not since been heard of : she is 27 years of age, short and stout, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, cast in one eye; dressed in a green coloured gown, with black stripe, black jaeket, black hat with half- mourning. flower in it, and plain leather lace up boots ; she is of weak intellect, and it is feared some ill has befallen her. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, Police Station, West Mailing, Kent.— Bow- street, December 15. Description of a man who gave the name of: RICHARD THOMAS, and stated that he was a native of Hampshire, who was convicted on the 13th instant under the Vagrant Act, and sentenced to 14 days hard labour : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slightly pockmarked, fresh com- plexion, light blue eyes, long features, dark brown bair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in dark cloth coat, cotton livery cleaning shirt, white and drab striped jacket, grey cloth trousers, shoes, with goloshes over them, and black soft felt hat. He had with him a brown silk Umbrella, whieh has been repaired at the top with a piece of ribbed twill, which is supposed to have been stolen. Committed for trial at the next Quarters Sessions, at Welshpool, for receiving stolen, property : MARY ANN DONNILY, 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, rather long features, scar under left eye, wound mark on left breast, mole under left arm ; dressed iia a cotton dress, black and white plaid shawl, and black bonnet with puce ribbon : she is a hawker of lace & c., and states that she is a native of Worcester. She had two small children with her ; her husband is a hatter. Information to be given to Chief Constable Danily, Newtown, or to Police Constable Tanner, Kerry,. Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, December 15. Absconded, charged on a warrant with misappropriating £ 2,960 in Bank of England notes, supposed now in his possession 2 dark leather Purses with gilt clasp, a quantity of steel pens, and 7 pawn tickets, as follows. 24th May, 1876, with Barbara Wells, 52, Broad- street, Bloomsbury, a Coat, 6s,, in the name of John Brown. 29th May, 1876, with T. F. Davidson, 43, Drury- lane, a Shirt, 6d., in the name of John Levey. llth August, 1876, Holyrood Money " Loan Office, 19, Canongate, Edinburgh, a wool Shirt, 2s. 6d., in the name of Isaac Abrahams, 15, High- street. 13th October, 1876, with J. Ferguson and Co., 312, Lawn- rnarket, Edinburgh, a pair of mens Shoes, 6s., in the name of Angus McArthur. 16th October, 1876, at Standard Loan Office, 51, Candle Maker, Edinburgh, a Shirt, Is. 3d., in the name of Charles Henry, 94, Grass- market. 7th Nov., 1876, with Alexander Miller, 38, Hamilton- street, Greenock, a pair of Trousers, 5s. 6d, in the name of John Thomas, 22, Market- street. . llth December, 1876, with Isaac Solaman, High- street, , Cheltenham, a Shirt, Is, in the u^ tne of James Smith, Stanhope- street, Cheltenham. ANTONIA PAYA, labourer, native of Peru, late of 2, Bordesley- street, Birmingham, and Coleshill, near Birming- ham, 40 years of age, 5 feet high, black hair and whiskers, brown eyes, oval visage, fresh complexion, has several boil sears on back and shoulders, on both eyebrows, and bridge of nose, has lost 2 upper teeth on left side of jaw, and is nearly bald on top of head ; dressed in dark clothes, and low soft hat. He was convicted of larceny at Wigan Borough Sessions on the 24th January, 1872, and sentenced to 18 months imprison- ment and 5 years police supervision. He was convicted of housebreaking at the Hants County Sessions, October 16, 1872, and sentenced to five years penal servitude; was dis- charged from Woking Prison on the 30th October last. Description of GEORGE YOUNG, a convict on licence, who has left Lincoln without notifying the same to the police : he is 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, grey hair, hazel eyes, mermaid and sailor on left arm, star on right hand, flogging marks on back, and ruptured both sides. He was sentenced to seven years penal servitude for larceny in Lincoln, on 10th. March, 1870, and was discharged from Borstal Prison on 6 th September last. He was convicted at Barbadoes on 12th July, 1872, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude and liberated from Borstal Prison on 30th June, 1876. No. X 447, who has neglected to report himself at Halifax, as required : he is 26 years of age, 5 feet 9| inches high, blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, thumb of right hand amputated, scar on forehead, and scar on left cheek ; he was convicted of felony at Wakefield on the 3rd April, 1871, and was sen- tenced to 7 years penal servitude and 7 yeara police super- vision. No. 531, HORATIO ABBOTT, a native of West Cowes, who has failed to report himself in pursuance of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871 : 43 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, oval face, slender build, scars on left eye and on right thigh, cut on under lip, mole on right cheek, and the three first fingers of his left hand have been amputated; he is probably travelling, buying rags and bones. He was con- victed at the Hants Michaelmas Sessions, 1870, of receiving stolen goods, after three previous convictions, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision.
