O. *(,* Whenever it is desired that any person should he appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, '> the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor aanflt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, NOTICE. Absconded from Oldham, on the 13th instant, charged with forgery : WILLIAM LAWSON, a coal merchant, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, sandy hair, fair complexion, round face, haB a twist near end of nose, which also has a slight blue mark across the bridge ; he is generally dressed in light tweed clothes. He is supposed to be endeavouring to leave the country, probably for Spain. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Oldham, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Way 26. Between 4 p. m. on the 26tli, and 4 a. m. on the 27th inst., the house of Elizabeth Butter, the Yacht Inn, Woodbank, near Chester, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : 12s. in Copper Money ; a black or dark- coloured cloth Over- coat, far worn, with black velvet collar, dark horn buttons, two pockets outside skirts, one pocket inside left breast, lined with black alpaca, and supposed double- breasted ; a three- half- pint Bottle, containing Irish Whisky, labelled ' Ginger Wine'; and a three- half- pint Bottle of Gin. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Hall, Birken head, Cheshire.—- Bow- street, May 29. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Ashton- under- Lyne ( by housebreaking) between 3 30 and 4' 30 p. m. on the 26th inst.: a black cloth Coat, with pockets in left breast and on each hip ; a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a black cloth Yest: a pair of grey tweed Trousers ; a black lustre Dress, bound round bottom with peach; a black Bussel cord Dress; a black and white striped Shawl; a grey rose coloured Shawl; a black mourning Skirt; a buff print Dress, with black stripe ; a black rep Dress ; a white flannel Petticoat; a silk Umbrella ; and 5s. in Money. Information to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Borough Police Office, Town Hall, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 29. Between 3 and 5 p. m. on the 24th instant, the dwelling- house attached to the National School, at Isfield, Sussex, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : about 10s. in Silver and Copper Monies; two salt Spoons, pearl handles and silver bowls; three Brooches, two imitation of gold, one twisted, and one a common white brooch ; a gold Locket, with grey and brown hair in it; a pair of sugar Tongs; five Dessert and two Table Spoons, plated ; six metal tea Spoons; two black cloth Jackets ; a grey Wrapper, trimmed with ball tassels; two leather Bags, one old, with two handles, the other small, containing crotchet patterns in pink cotton ; a pair of kid Boots, nearly new ; and a white hair Brush. Supposed by a man, from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, light. hair, small light mous- tache, slight made, and round shouldered ; had the appear- ance of a waiter; dressed in a dark speckled suit, and round when talking : dressed in brown coat, tight- fitting cord trousers, and cap with button on the top. He married a woman named AYRES, who was killed on the line near Brookwood, Surrey, about a year ago, whilst he was waiting his trial for a robbery at Goodwood Baces. And another man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather thin built, little brown whiskers, has lost part of his nose, appears to have had a cancer taken out of the upper lip, from which hangs a piece of loose flesh ; dressed in black or dark coat, and a high black hat. Both men attend races, fairs, and clubs with cocoa nuts, & c. Information to be given to Head Constable Hibberd, Basingstoke, Hants, who will pay £ 2 reward.— Bow- street, May 24. Stolen from a stable at Drighlington, in the West Biding of Yorkshire, on the night of the 15th instant; a dark grey colt Pony, 12| hands high, nearly white round the off fore fetlock joint, and has been recently castrated. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, West Biding Constabulary, Yorkshire.— Bow- stret, May 24. Stolen from Tytherington Park, during the night of the 18th instant: a bay Mare, 5 years old, 14 hands 3 inches high, white face, white hind foot, square tail, and small lump under saddle. Information to be given to Superintendent Dale, County Police Office, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 24. Stolen on the 16th instant, from a field near Shepton Mallet : a dark bay Mare, aged, about 15 hands high, hollow backed, white face, has saddle and collar marks; the property of Mr. Penny, of Dungeon Farm, Croscombe. THE PEBSOI. Stolen from the person of John Bright, at Newtown Fair : a Purse, containing £ 4 in Gold, and eleven £ 5 Notes of the North and South Wales Bank, Newtown and Oswestry. By JOHN BOWKER, alias WOWZER, and JOSIAH BEECH, horse dealers. Beech has been apprehended and committed for trial. Bowker is still at large, and for his apprehension a warrant has been issued : he is about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout make, fresh complexion, brown hair, small whiskers, and bow- legged; dressed in light coat and vest, woollen cord trousers, and jirn- crow hat; he is well known to horse dealers, and is supposed t, o be in company with a man about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, swarthy complexion, black hair, cut short, clean shaved, appears as if blind with one eye, gipsy appear- ance, and attends fairs in England, and North and South Wales. They are now supposed to be in Ireland in company with a| pickpocket who attends horse and cattle fairs. Stolen from the person on Lewes Bace Course, on the 20th instant: a double- case silver - Watch, maker Skinner, Cliffe, Lewes,' J. Absconded from Eastbourne on the 23rd instant, charged with stealing a silver Geneva Watch ( recovered), and 9s. Information to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesb, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 24. BWE6LAEY AMD MOUSE BREAKING. About 2 a. m. on the 29th instant, a butcher's shop was broken into and a door Bolt stolen therein. By two men, one of whom was apprehended, the other escaped, and is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 iuches high, and stoutly made; dressed in blue serge jacket, dark trousers, and cloth cap. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 31. During the hours of 12 midnight on the 23rd and 3 a ni. on the 24th instant, the grocer's shop of Charles Catherall, of Higher Kinnerton Hope, was broken into, and 2s. lid. in Copper, about lib. of Cheese, a Loaf of Bread, and about 20 Eggs stolen therein. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Adams, or to Inspector Minshull, Mold, Flintshire.—- Bow- street, May 29. During the night of the 23rd instant, the Booking Office of Longford Railway Station was broken and entered and stolen therein : one Saloon Pistol, No. 1 size; 30 or 40 Old and Foreign Coins, one marked ' Tag, Rag and Bobtail'; one an Isle of Man Coin, and one of the Bank of Montreal ; a Cigar Case, dark green, steel fastenings, cameo front with a lady sitting on a lion's back; also 4s. in Copper Money. Information to be given to Superintendent Auston, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, May 29. HORSE AND CATTLE Stolen from a field at Rostherne, during the night of the 28th instant: a grey she Ass, aged, in good condition, a crack in one fore hoof, and without shoes, the property of Mr. Wm. Carter. £ 1 reward will be given for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the Ass. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Altrincham, or to Sergeant Hollingworth, Lymm, or to P. C. Fowles, Rostherne, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 31. Found at Shifnal on the 21st instant, and supposed tc have been stolen : 2 bay Cart Horses, both about 15 to 16 hands high, one aged and has an enlarged knee on near leg, and is rather low in the back ; the other, rising 5 years old, and has lost the shoe off the near hind foot. Information to be given Deputy Chief Constable Ivins, Wellington, or to Sergeant Meredith, Shifnal, Salop.— Bow- street, May 26. The horse advertised in the Police Gazette of the 19th instant, as stolen from Basingstoke, has been recovered ( having been sold at Chobham, Surrey), and warrants are issued for the apprehension of the following two men charged with stealing the same : SAMUEL SMITH, a gipsey, commonly called SAMMY, about 27 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, light hair, brown complexion, and very few whiskers, shaves the lower part of face, has a little hair on the upper lip, and a tuft of hair on the cheek bones, stutters Absconded on the 17th instant, from Newington Butts, embezzling £ 8 : WILLIAM JAMES BARTLETT, late of 56, Melton- road, Ilerne Hill, 29 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, long auburn hair and whiskers, gentlemanly appearance ; lisely to go to America. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, L Division, May 29. Absconded OK the 17th instart, from Hercules- place, Holloway- road, embezzling £ 6 lis. 8d. : a man, 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches higb, fresh complexion, light hair, full face, slight moustache, and no whiskers; dressed as a butcher.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, May 29. Absconded, 18th, from Thornhill- square, Islington, embezzling £ 15 : a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slim build, complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ( slight) dark; dress, grey suit, black felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, May 29. Absconded, 23rd instant, from Somerset- street, Marj'- lebone, stealing £ 7 : a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, good looking, and tattoo marks on arms ; dressed in black cloth trousers, dark overcoat ( too large for him), and black billycock hat. He says he has served in the Navy.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, May 29. Charged on a warrant with stealing a suit of Black Clothes, the property of Joseph Furnandez, in Hull, on the 13th instant : RICHARD RIDER., an American, 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, black moustache, dark hair and complexion, and high cheek bones ; dressed in brown cloth- ing. He will probably endeavour to return to America. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook,' Hull, York- shire.— Bow- street, May 29. Absconded fiom Ipswich, in March last, charged with embezzlement.: JAMES NEWMAN URCH, 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, full beard and moustache, round face, full eyes, rather short neck, square shoulders, walks erect; he has been i employed in stationer's and bookseller's shops, is of good ) address, and of gentlemanly appearance. Information to ba ; given to Head Constable Mason, Police Office, Town Hall, Ipswich, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, May 29. Description of CHARLES WEBB, charged with steal- ing 19s.; the property of Mr. John Darrall, Cannock : he is 27 years of age, 6 feet high, slender build, whiskers shaved off, tuft of hair on chin, heavy black moustache, dark complexion, thin long face, black hair parted down the front, and walks erect, has been a soldier ; dressed in moleskin trousers, short pilot jacket much worn, black billycock hat, and elastic- side boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Serjeant Evans, Cannock, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— — Bow- street, May 29. Description of two men, charged with stealing £ 7 10s. in^ Gold and a silver Geneva Watcb, metaldome, No. 21133 : one 23 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, long features, wears a hard billycock hat. The other 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, round chubby features, wears an apron • wrapped round his waist, and soft billycock hat, turned up at sides. They were both dressed in dark clothes, and had the appearance of curriers, mechanics, or shoe- rivetters. Information to be given to Superintendent Haigh, Police Office, Kidderminster, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, May 29. The fitter, described in the Police Gazette of the 24th instant, as having absconded from No. 2, Farnsbry- street, New Swindon, charged with larceny, has been apprehended, and the Property recovered. He states his name is JAMES HARDING, and that he is a native of Manchester. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent North, Swindon, Wiltshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Charged on a warrant with stealing on the 20th March last, from Parkside Lunatic Asylum, a silver lever Watch ( recovered) : CHARLES E. M. MALTON, a clerk, was formerly employed at the Asylum, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, proportionate build, dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, moustache, and imperial, rather thick lips, of gentlemanly appearance and good address, and can speak several languages. And LILIAN, his wife, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, sallow com- plexion, black hair, rather wavy and tinged with grey ; she is a native of London, and has three children. Two Guineas reward will be paid on the apprehension of the above- named persons, and their photographs may be seen. Information to be given to Chief Constable Sheasby, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Absconded from Sheffield, stealing .£ 60 which he was entrusted with to take to Midland Bank. Sheffield : WIL- LIAM BESLEY, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slender build, dark complexion, dark brown hair, slight dark moustache, and no whiskers; dressed in a light grey suit and hard felt hat. Information to be given at the Central Police Office, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Eou- tt., May 26 Absconded on the 20th instant, from Turner- street, Stepney, embezzling £ 19 : a man 33 years of age, 5 ft. 6 ins. high, blind of right eye, fresh complexion, auburn hair, and small sandy whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark mixture cutaway coat, light trousers, and hard black hat, Description of Corporal JAMES MASTERS, No. 9003, Royal Engineers, Instructor lst Newcastle Engineer Vols., who has absconded from Newcastle- on- Tyne : 34£ years of age, 5 feet 10 inches higbfi^ esh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, two vaccination Eiart^ right arm, scar right forearm from a burn ; dressedin dark tweed suit, felt hat; he enlisted 14th November, 1866, and deserted 15th May, 1876. He is supposed to have left Newcastle- on- Tyne with a woman on the 15th instead at 11' 20 p. m. per rail for London. He took with him £ 69 blhmging to » ,% lting man in Newcastle, and it is supposed tH? t he will have above £ 100 in cash upon him, and endeavour to go to America. His wife is living at North Front, Kingston, Southampton. Information to be given to Captain aud Adjutant Tremble, lst A. B., Durham Engineer Volunteers, Newcastle- on- Tyne.— Bow- st., May 24. WILLIAM PARKHOUSE, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 19th ultimo, has been apprehended at Worcester, and committed for trial at the next quarter sessions for Devon, on the 27th proximo. Information to be given to Superintendent Collins, Cullompton, Devon.— Bow- street, May 24. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described). Absconded from his bail, charged with bigamy : CHAS. IRESON, victualler, 41 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, light hazel eyes, dark hair, bald on top of head, and short grey whiskers. Supposed to be accompanied by second wife, 19 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches higb, fair hair, grey eyes, and good looking. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Maidenhead, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 24. FBAUDS AND AGGStAVATIB MISDEMEANOURS. Obtained by fraud on the 22nd instant, from No. 18, Salisbury- street, New North- road : a dark bay horse Pony, 13 hands high, hog mane; a set of Harness, brass- mounted, and with breast collar; and a light spring Cart, body chocolate colour picked out with orange, wicker ornaments at sides. By two men : one 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, bair, and whiskers ; dressed in light coat, dark trousers, and high black hat. The other 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion and hair; dressed in dark clothes, and black felt hat.— Metro- politan Police, N Division, May 26. Obtained on the 20th instant, by fraud, from Elizabeth- street, Bethnal Green : a grey Gelding, aged, 15 hands higb, with a lump on the off side ; a Cart, painted green, picked out with light green; and a set of silver- plated Harness. By a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair com plexion, light hair and moustache, and face pockmarked ; he wore moleskin trousers.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, May 24. Obtained by fraud on the 3rd instant, from Mr. Harris, bicycle manufacturer, Cambridge- road, Dover : a Bicycle, with 46- inch driving wheel, Coventry make, No. 5004, nearly new. By a mau, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 ins. higb, brown hair, fair complexion, is a good bicycle rider, and talks a good deal about boating and swimming ; dressed He is a native of Chippenham, Wilts, where he is likely to in brownish mixture coat and trousers, and black felt hat. go.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, May 24. Absconded from Silverdale, on the 16th instant, charged with stealing £ 103, the monies of the Silverdale Free Church Sunday School Clothing Fund: WILSON HODSON VICKERS, between 28 aud 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, middle size, dark brown hair, sandy whiskers, and sallow complexion ; supposed to be dressed in black clothes, amd soft felt hat; he is a butcher, and a native of Silverdale. Information to be given to Superintendent Baker, Constabu- lary Office, Tun- stall, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion, or at any Police Station in Staffordshire.— Bmo- street, May 24. Absconded on the 20th instant, frem 35, Praed- street, Paddington, stealing £ 11 6s. 9d. : a woman, 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, very light brown hair, grey eyes, full face, low forehead, and thick lips ; dressed ia black guilted petticoat, black tablier bound with black ribbon, and trimmed with black lace, check bodice, bound with black velvet, black cloth jacket, trimmed with imitation fur and braid, white straw hat, trimmed with brown and yellow ribbon, and brown feathers.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, May 24. Absconded from Coventry on the morning of the 20th instant, CHARLES MIDDLEBROOK, a professional rink skater, charged with stealing £ 14 18s., the monies of his employers, the Proprietors of the Coventry Skating Rink, and also with stealing from Mr. S.
